Monroe County will be holding six public workshops all around the county beginning in January (see sidebar). The purpose is to get community input about how to respond better to hurricanes – before, during and after.

“These meetings are designed to hear from you, the community,” said Monroe County Public Information Officer Cammy Clark.

On Dec. 20, Monroe County Emergency Management Director Marty Senterfitt said the Keys deserve an A+ for the response and rapid recovery from the storm.

“It’s been 57 years since we’ve had a catastrophic storm in the Keys, and there wasn’t a lot of institutional knowledge. That being said, the community did an incredible job,” he said.

“But now the world has changed. We know what a Category 4 storm looks like, and we have to rise to the occasion. We have to get better.”

Senterfitt said he’s eager to hear the public’s response to Hurricane Irma preparedness and recovery.

“I want to get feedback from everyone and hear different perspectives,” he said. “However, certain themes keep reappearing.”

1. Communication. A Category 4 storm wipes out cell phone service and the internet. Which makes communication challenging at best, not only within the disaster zone, but also outside it.

Senterfitt said he wants to explore the use of COW (Cell On Wheel) towers, and portable satellite systems. “The satellite functions like a generator and can provide the command post with VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone line and also internet capability,” he said. Other items to explore include “old school” technology such as stationing a requisition team out of the disaster zone to speed supply orders, or even ham radio operators.

2. Self-evaluation. Having not only government agencies, but also the general public, reflect on Hurricane Irma has merit. “I have some personal insight,” said Senterfitt, ruefully. “I had way too many of my personal belongings stored underneath my house. Not only was it painful to lose my things, but I also contributed to the debris on the side of the road.” Senterfitt said many Keys residents, himself included, were caught off guard.

3. Trained volunteers. Monroe County’s Emergency Management Department has five full-time employees.

To better respond, Monroe County has two choices, hire more employees or train the general public. (To be clear, many regular citizens were part of the immediate, albeit informal, recovery effort — whether clearing roads or delivering supplies.) Part of the training can include hands-on work. “As other areas experience disaster, we can go help them because it’s the right thing to do. But we will also be learning skills and reinforcing knowledge.” To that end, the Monroe County Emergency Management office will be holding classes beginning in February to train local volunteers in the National Incident Management System.

4. Pre-positioned contracts.

“We’re struggling with debris removal right now, of course. But we also need to talk about whether we need contracts for communication equipment when we need it, or a team to help us with logistics,” said Senterfitt. He praised the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative for its storm readiness, with contracts in place not only to bring in linemen, but also to set up base camps with a kitchen, cots and showers.

rom beachside fireworks to wacky takeoffs on the traditional celebration in New York’s Times Square, the Keys offer a wealth of ways to welcome 2018.

Four celebrations in Key West, all slated for the night of Sunday, Dec. 31, are lighthearted Keys versions of the Times Square festivities.

Renowned drag queen Sushi takes center stage at the annual celebration at the Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House complex at 724 Duval St. Just before midnight, Sushi is to be lowered from the balcony of the complex in the famed giant red shoe. Guest host Austin Armacost is best known for his appearances on Logo Television’s reality show “The A List” and the British reality show “Celebrity Big Brother.” A street-side stage will feature performances by local and national notables.

Hungrytown brings acoustic show

ungrytown, an acoustic duo that has toured for almost 15 years and whose music is featured on television shows, in films and for sports events will perform in January at libraries in Key West, Marathon and Key Largo.

Vermonters Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson make up Hungrytown. Their songs and music have appeared in numerous television programs, including IFC’s “Portlandia,” Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and Neftlix’s new comedy, “Lady Dynamite,” as well

as documentaries and sporting events.

The Monroe County Public Library presents the duo on Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Key West library, 700 Fleming St.; Thursday, Jan. 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Marathon library, 3251 Overseas Hwy.; and Friday, Jan. 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Key Largo library, in the Tradewinds Shopping Center, 101485 Overseas Hwy. All performances are free.

The Keys stops are part of a fourmonth tour of the American South and Southwest. The duo also toured for more than 6 months earlier this year, in the U.S., the U.K. and New Zealand.

Road closures will begin as early 11:00 AM which will cause delays and detours to regular bus services, scheduled pick-up points and times.



Buses will NOT provide service west of Simonton Street starting at 11:00 AM. Please find the closest bus stop on Simonton Street or wave a bus down for pick up. Service on Simonton Street will stop at 5:00 PM.  Regular bus service will operate normal times. However, the Green & Blue routes will be extended to operate until 1:45 AM, at which time the last CITY shuttle will depart from Fausto’s. Please note the all City and Lower Keys bus service will convert to “SAFE RIDE” shuttles at 5:00 PM and the Green and Blue routes may have additional buses running during peak times. This mean the buses will only travel as far as Fleming and Bahama Streets (Fausto’s Food Palace) via White, Southard and Fleming Streets. Please note that there might be a short service interruption while buses change shifts; please plan accordingly.  Additional Lower Keys Shuttles- in Marathon from Sadowski will depart as shown below. ast May, there was quite an uproar about two potential parking garages to be built in Key West. One was to be a fourstory garage at 609 Greene St. and the other a three-story structure beside the fire house at 616 Simonton St. There was an especially loud outcry by Greene Street businesses and the Bight Board against turning the parking lot on Greene Street into what was dubbed a “concrete dinosaur.” The city eventually pulled the resolution from the June 6 commission meeting. Commissioner Richard Payne, who was for the parking garages, admitted at the time, “There are a lot of misconceptions out there and we need to make intelligent decisions.”

The city is making good on pursuing more data and public opinion by forming the Parking and Meetings set Alternative Transportation Group on parking last August. The group consists of Jan. 2 – 10 a.m. seven local residents appointed Jan. 25 – 1 p.m. by commissioners: Eric Detwiler, Feb. 22 – 1 p.m. vice chairman (Commissioner Sam March 22 – 1 p.m.

Lopez), Gregory Davila (Payne), May 24 – 1 p.m.

According to city resolution 17215, “The mission of the group shall be to accumulate information, review effective strategies in other communities, formulate suggestions and recommendations to alleviate congestion, encourage public transportation, reduce reliance on personal vehicle use and improve parking availability.”

Previously, Kaufman stated, “I have a lot of concerns about spending $8 million on a garage before seeing how ride sharing affects the city and giving the Car Free campaign a chance.” Now the transportation group can see the effects of Uber and Lyft, as well as the Car Free Campaign including the free Duval Loop bus. With increasing bicycle usage, there will be many transportation factors for the committee to study and hopefully, help the city move forward with a plan.

Six transportation group meetings are scheduled so far. All meetings are held in Commission Chambers at City Hall, 1300 White St. “We hope to see a good public turnout as well to all of our meetings,” said McVeigh. “Because of the daytime meeting schedule, we intend to hold several well publicized evening public input/workshop sessions (potentially late March and late April) to give the community the opportunity to weigh in if they are unavailable during daytime hours.”

He also has met with executives of Lola Lola, leaders in product branding for the upcoming legalized recreational marijuana in California. “Being a former smoker and having a best-selling book on Amazon, they want to feature me as the poster boy for recreational pot in California,” said Davis.

The former convict and fugitive is taking in all his success with a lot of humor: “It’s not easy being a professional book pimp.”

ack in 2016, no one could stop talking about mosquitoes. In fact, they weren’t just local headlines but international news as well. The 2016 election brought turnover to the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District Board and resulted in a resounding “no” from voters in Key Haven as a trial site for genetically modified mosquitoes. And then the Zika scare hit. Tourists canceled trips all over Florida and pregnant women were terrified. But miraculously, the Keys saw fewer than a dozen travel-related cases. And then, media outlets everywhere hailed the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District as a preemptive organization to be mirrored. No one knew more or did more about mosquitoes than residents of the Keys.

While the headlines have faded for now, finding a solution to virus-carrying mosquitoes has not. Last April, the first test run of 20,000 Wolbachia-infected males from MosquitoMate were released on Stock Island. Tubes filled with 1,000 males contaminated with the bacterium were released, in hopes of reducing mosquito reproduction.

These were not genetically altered mosquitoes; the bacterium renders them sterile.

“Mosquito Control (FKMCD) finished the first Wolbachia trial right before the hurricane,” said spokeswoman Beth Ranson. “The trial, in partnership with MosquitoMate, was more of a logistical trial than efficacy trial. Mosquito Control is talking with MosquitoMate about doing another trial in 2018. In the meantime, FKMCD is awaiting results from the first trial.”

As for the genetically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes Oxitec wanted to release in Key Haven?

They have not been approved by either the EPA or the public. But Oxitec has submitted an application to the EPA to study the release and it could be approved in the future.

Ranson noted FKMCD broke ground on its new Lower Keys Operations Facility on Big Coppitt.

“The facility was originally slated to be completed in March, but was pushed back until early May because of construction delays caused by Hurricane Irma,” she said. “The facility will include a chemical and maintenance building, as well as a trailer complex that will house administrative offices and a small mosquito identification lab.”

Because of Irma, FKMCD has been granted a three-month lease extension on the Stock Island building and will not incur a rent increase in March.

fter a wicked 2017 in the Florida Keys, it’s good to look back on one win that was decisive: the complete eradication of the screwworm infecting the herd of Key deer on Big Pine Key. “I don’t expect to see another case,” said the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Dr. John B. Welch to a select audience of stakeholders meeting at the Marathon airport in March of this year.

The crisis reared its ugly head in September of 2016. And because the pest had been eradicated in Florida since 1959, there was some confusion at the beginning as to what was happening to the local deer population. (The open wounds were too grotesque to be pictured in most newspapers.)

Once the cause was pinpointed, officials in charge immediately reverted to the old science to eradicate the disease — lightly irradiating male flies. To treat the Keys infestation, scientists baited traps on Big Pine Key and No Name Key and released 140 million sterile male flies over about six months. (The flies came from a lab in Panama, by the way. Very fancy.)

At the time of the infestation, there was a communal fear that the disease would also infect domesticated animals such as dogs, or even the THE SCIENCE: feral cat population. Unfortunately, about 13 percent of the herd that originally numbered 1,000 had to be euthanized. Fortunately, the disease was contained and eliminated. No “source” animal was ever identified and it’s still a mystery how screwworm reappeared in Florida after a 58-year absence.

n Tuesday, Marathon’s Senior Planner Brian Shea presented the results of a feasibility study on a community pool to the Marathon City Council. The project is the result of months of work at the behest of the council, after Marathon residents narrowly approved a non-binding referendum question regarding a community pool on the August 2016 ballot.

Earlier this month, the council sent a letter to the Monroe County School Board asking it to build a pool on the property it owns adjacent to Marathon High School.

Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey told the council that School Superintendent Mark Porter declined that request, although has not put it in writing. After the presentation and public comment in favor of the pool on Tuesday, the council decided to write another letter to the school board, this time asking for the Marathon Manor property.

n 2017, talks about a community pool got farther than ever before. Still, it stalled at the end of August when the Monroe County School Board revealed plans to build a full-size track and other sports fields on the Marathon Manor property it owns adjacent to Marathon High School.

Marathon voters approved two referendum questions in August 2016. About a year later, discussion lasered in on the Marathon Manor property. In June 2017, the Marathon Council asked the school board to build a pool on the property. However, the school board had already begun the design process to add athletic fields.

In July, the City of Marathon presented its findings on the feasibility of a community pool to the council.

The city studied three pools — Founders Park in Islamorada, Jacobs Aquatic in Key Largo and the Boy Scouts pool on Lower Matecumbe.

Annual operating costs ranged from $161,000 to $528,000 depending on the size of the pool. (Those figures assume no revenue generated by the pool, and free admission.) The city found that an assessed tax of $50 to $70 per year on a home valued at $300,000 would be enough to operate a pool the size of the one at Founders Park. At the conclusion of that meeting, the council was per-

The very next week the school board presented its plans for the Marathon Manor property. Eventually, the five-member board elected to go with the most elaborate of all — one that would use the Manor property for a full-size track and football/soccer field and the other existing fields to be redeveloped into separate baseball and softball fields. The school’s $5 million redevelopment plan also calls for additional parking spaces.

The school board must have a full site plan in order to proceed.

It’s possible that the area dedicated to storm water retention on the conceptual plan may be overkill if the runoff is managed with deep injection wells.

Currently, the student parking lot adjacent to the Marathon Manor floods in heavy rains, and that was also the case during Hurricane Irma.

ade 2 Order is approaching its 10th year in business this coming May and there is a lot to celebrate. After only 22 days of post-Irma closure, the eatery opened its doors and got back to its mantra of feeding great people great food.

Owner/Executive Chef David Fulmer’s interest in food began when he was young. Following the instructions left behind on notes, a young Fulmer helped out around the kitchen by prepping dinner for his sister and mom. The familyinspired hobby turned into a passion, and Fulmer hasn’t forgotten the importance of family.

Fulmer went on to train at Le Cordon Bleu Institute of Culinary Arts in Pittsburgh before an externship at the Ocean Reef Club finally got him to the Keys. After some seasonal bouncing back and forth between the Keys and Philadelphia, he decided on paradise.

The adjustment from classical French cuisine to Keysy dishes wasn’t too difficult, said Fulmer. He sticks to using quality ingredients and a scratch-based approach to get the most out of each component.

the only Le Cordon Bleu alum in the kitchen, and because his entire kitchen staff is cross-trained, the high standard of food is extremely consistent.

The kitchen’s takes on breakfast and lunch favorites are impressive.

Server Amberly Bowles recommends the Tropical French Toast, The Islander, or the Crab Cake Benedict for breakfast.

“I love working here. Everyone has a great attitude; we laugh, joke, and poke fun at each other but get the job done,” said Bowles. “The hours are great because I can take my son to school and pick him up on the way home.”

While breakfast is the most important meal of the day, don’t feel bad if you sleep in; the entire menu is available until the restaurant closes at 3 p.m.

Lunch has plenty of options too.

The Grouper Reuben is deep-fried with a house-made seasoned flour and is served on hearty Jewish rye bread with Swiss cheese and homemade Thousand Island dressing. The Crab Panini consists of soft shell crab rolled in seasoned panko bread crumbs, deep fried, and served on ciabatta bread with candied plantains, sweet Thai chili sauce, and bleu cheese. The Ahi Club sandwich used eight ounces of thick cut sesame seared tuna pressed between Asian slaw, bacon, wasabi, mayo and ginger.

ey Wester Charles “Chuck” Meier knows iguanas. He knows the details of hunting, cleaning, catching and cooking the invasive species. And, he says that Hurricane Irma didn’t help one bit with the population, saying it’s about to boom like never before.

“South Florida is in an explosion right now,” he said. “After the storm, they are even more prominent. This is the beginning of a real iguana invasion and what we have seen in the past is nothing compared to what is coming.”

This is breeding season, Meier said of the aggressive iguanas he gets called to remove from people’s homes as a pest exterminator. He added that the next three months the eggbound females will be digging up yards to bury the eggs – one of their favorite places to lay is underneath the tombstones at the Key West Cemetery.

As a proponent of eating the “chicken-like” iguanas, and the eggs, as well as eradicating the invasive species from South Florida, Meier’s 75-page guide to catching, cleaning, cooking and eating iguana, “Key West Iguana Killer’s Club” is set to be on bookstore stands in January.

The Russians even know about it. Meier was just featured on a Russian television show where the host was reluctant to try the iguana at Jose’s Café in Key West. “She did it, though,” he said. The five-minute video walks viewers from the hunt to the kitchen.

“Hunting iguana is not illegal, it’s actually promoted,” he said, although he said he still gets threats via his Facebook page.

“In the Keys, it’s a Catch 22 with iguanas. You either love them or you hate them; there is no in between.”

We had toothbrushes. Lots and lots of toothbrushes. From the American Red Cross, the fire departments, the Baptists, the Samaritans, my friends’ care packages, each one included a toothbrush in the care kit. And, not just one toothbrush, a 10-pack per household member. We suddenly acquired hundreds. I ranted to them, who doesn’t evacuate without a toothbrush? And, if you did evacuate without a toothbrush, wouldn’t you

just run to the store on the mainland and grab one, like the first day you realized you didn’t have a toothbrush?

Then it happened. Monday morning, an unmarked package showed up. I opened the package to find 40 Spinbrushes. A display case of them, the kind they put up in Walgreens complete with “makes a great stocking stuffer” written on it and directions on how to assemble the display case.

Oh, my gosh. My friends hate me.

I laughed hysterically and put a rant on Facebook that someone I know clearly doesn’t like their eyeballs (Nicole Rapanos and Becki Balcer). And, people loved it.

Then it started. Two days later an Amazon Prime package showed up.

I still didn’t have internet, so I know I didn’t drunk order it. I opened it up to find 144 tubes of toothpaste in there.

144 tubes of minty fresh breath to go with my 740 toothbrushes (Elgersmas!). I died, and posted it on Facebook, complete with a little toothpaste stain on my shirt from all my tooth brushing …

Then the mouthwash came, and dental floss, and dental picks. Every day, something new would show up (all from entirely different amazing people who loved the first rant). A tooth fairy costume arrived; a superhero tooth T-shirt was next, followed by a book entitled “Teeth are NOT for Biting.” Fake teeth showed up on my doorstep, professional grade dental stainless steel cleaning products arrived. The kids were excited every day to see what arrived. And, it was hilarious.

So, when you see me on the side of the road digging through my trunk and handing things to small children, it’s not candy (or drugs), my friends, it’s dental hygiene products. And, the tooth fairy strikes again.

ork crews broke ground on the new Plantation Key School site, which is about 100,000 square feet in total, this past January. The project was estimated to cost roughly $35 million.

Hurricane Irma minimally affected the construction site, said Bill Shoemaker, project manager for Monroe County School District.

“Luckily after the storm there was a minimal amount of damage. They manned up pretty quickly, and were able to get back to work within two weeks of the storm,” he said.

Nowadays the site is bustling with as many as 75 workers at a time, said Shoemaker. Even with the construction happening right behind the installed safety fence, Shoemaker says students have not been affected.

Biltmore Superintendent Michael Hobbs updated the Weekly on the status of the new school.

“Once we finish the roof, fireproof, and build the interior walls for classrooms, the next phase will be building the kitchen area. Once we complete that – sometime around January, – then it will be an all interior buildout,” said Hobbs.

A retired chief from the Navy’s construction battalions, Hobbs is experienced in building schools in the Keys and South Florida. He was part of the construction effort in building Poinciana Elementary, Key West High School and a school in Miami.

“The slab is being poured for the room that will have the Science on a Sphere,” said Hobbs. “It uses four projectors and a Kevlar globe to make a hologram.”

The globe acts like a display system that works with computers and video projectors to display data on the sphere, which measures 6 feet in diameter. Originally created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the sphere is now used as an educational tool. The globe’s design is so particular that its website comes with floor plans and configuration variations.

The globe isn’t the only new feature the school will have.

“The school’s going to have a gym, which it never had before,” said Shoemaker. “They’ll have a brand new baseball field, basketball courts, playground, tennis courts, and state-of-theart classrooms.”

Hobbs says Biltmore Construction is eyeing a 2018 fall completion date.

n Dec. 7, the Islamorada Village Council amended its agreement with Weiler Engineering Corporation, allocating more money to the design, permitting and surveying of the new Anne’s Beach Boardwalk project.

The expansion in scope now includes the replacement of six pavilions and repair of two asphalt parking areas that were destroyed

by Hurricane Irma’s storm surge.

The additional costs, roughly $23,000, brings the “not-to-exceed” contract price tag from $69,000 to $92,000 for Weiler.

The $92,000 is a portion of the first phase costs of the project.

Phase I is expected to cost no more than $600,000.00.

Once Phase I is complete, Monroe County’s Tourist Development Council would reimburse Islamorada for project expenses up

to $300,000.

Islamorada’s Capital Projects Fund budget, which had about $2.5 million remaining in restricted fund balance as of Sept. 30, appropriated $1.2 million to fund all phases of the boardwalk project initially via grants from the tourist council.

The beach’s closure since the storm has affected the weekend activities of many locals, especially kite boarders.

In the kite boarding community, the beach is known for its consistent east wind of 18 to 25 miles per hour – which is “as good as it gets” – and warm shallow waters, says Otherside Boardsports owner and kite board enthusiast/ instructor, Mike Walsh.

“That was the whole staff’s go-to spot, and became a meeting point for Upper Keys and Middle Keys kiters. It’s one of the best spots in the entire Keys to kite, and certainly the best in the Upper Keys,” said Walsh.

Boarding conditions aren’t the only remarkable thing about the beach Walsh enjoys. It’s also very much “alive,” he says, referring to the vast amount of sea life he’s encountered.

Along the outer flats, he’s seen everything from six or seven species of sharks, to sea turtles, pods of dolphin, and a variety of starfish.

Still, Walsh is always on the lookout for “unicorn” conditions; southwesterly winds that make knee-high swells and safely blow kiters away from the bridge and roads nearby. As the beach continues its long road to restoration, Walsh’s hope is that kiters will return in full force.

“It’s hurt a lot for the traveling kiters, but it’s hurt a lot of local kiters, too,” he said. “Kiting has become such a big thing there.

There are a lot of professionals who travel the world and still say that Anne’s Beach is their favorite spot.”

E

arlier this year, the Upper Keys Weekly profiled artist Bobby Oshaben upon his graduation from Coral Shores High School. Home on winter break from his first semester at Florida Atlantic University, Oshaben sat down for a second time with the Weekly to update us on his life, art and college.

“It’s been a big change, but it’s been exciting living in a larger town,” he said. “In Boca there is a lot more to see and do and I feel like living up there gives me a space to focus on my art, where down here I had more going on and distractions.”

In his first semester, Oshaben split his course load between general education classes and art classes.

His design class has introduced him to the elements of design, and centers around how to create a composition that’s pleasing to the eye. In his drawing class, Oshaben’s professor presents the class with a new still-life subject for his students to sketch each week.

He’s learned contour drawing, gesture drawing, and used charcoal for the first time, too.

“It was a lot different than using pencil. It was kind of like painting because you’re able to put down a lot more value in less strokes than a pencil,” said Oshaben of charcoal. “I think I have definitely improved in my technical skills and drawing.”

For inspiration, he visited an art exhibit of students enrolled in the Bachelors of Fine Arts program. Students apply for the competitive program in their sophomore years, and Oshaben is looking to submit his portfolio next year. In the meantime he’s honing his technical skills.

His free time has been productive as well. He joined an Ultimate Frisbee club, visited the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and attended Miami’s Art Basel Fine Arts Fair for the first time.

“It was really interesting to see all the contemporary art styles. It was a big difference between what I’m used to doing,” said Oshaben, who considers himself a realist artist.

Oshaben says the best part about the event was being able to see original Picassos on display.

Next semester, Oshaben is taking his second drawing course that will venture into figure drawing, and an art history class. He has also been commissioned by DJ Joe Delgado to create three paintings of underwater photographs that will be displayed during the summer.

The exhibit is part of Delgado’s plan to intertwine his music, photography and video. Oshaben is also getting his first car next semester and is anxious to keep exploring his new surroundings.

“The national organizers tell us is the number one ride of the year,” said Phil Goodman, past president of the Military Affairs Committee of Key West. “I guess they know by word of mouth that this is the best ride that you can go on, and people in the Keys are really supportive.”

The Wounded Warrior Project ride starts on Friday, Jan. 5 in the Upper Keys, when the warriors and companions arrive at 8 a.m. at the VFW Post 10211 at MM 102 in Key Largo.

About a half hour later they take off again for a ride to the Ciao Hound at MM 84. They ride the buses to Marathon Fire Station No. 14 for a lunch and set off at about 12:30 p.m. to cross the Seven Mile Bridge. On the following day, Friday, Jan. 6, the soldiers ride from Boca Chica NAS to Bayview Park, arriving at about 11:45 a.m. The entire community is invited to ride with the soldiers to The Little White House. On Sunday, the warriors back track to the Dolphin Research Center for a day of fun.

Celtic rock and traditional music await attendees at the fifth annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival, set for Friday through Sunday, Jan. 5-7, in Marathon.

A return of the Scottish band Albannach headlines a diverse musical lineup for the family-friendly event. Also featured are The Screaming Orphans, an encore performance from West of Galway and a live acoustic performance by Marcille Wallis & Friends.

A free-admission “Kilts in the Keys” celebration kicks off the weekend, featuring Irish music from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Marathon Grill and Ale House at MM 53.

The festival itself runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Marathon Community Park.

Other highlights of the weekend event include sheepdog herding demonstrations, the bagpipes and drums of Police Pipe and Drum of Florida, Highland athletics and the state Haggis Hurling Championship. All events are open for public viewing.

Celtic merchandise, food, beverages, local craftspeople and vendors as well as children’s activities round out the weekend’s festivities.

here is something about lists that people like to read. Here’s the Top 10 list of the Keys-based stories that went viral this past year. Although Hurricane Irma-related posts could take the cake for all top 10, here’s some other fun or controversial topics that took our local internet by storm.

Southernmost Buoy Post-Hurricane Irma The iconic image of the

Cow Key Bridge Run 0K: Show us your teats April 2017 There are a lot of bridge runs in the Keys, the most famous bring the 7 Mile Bridge Run that closes out the running field in mere minutes when registration opens, but one of our favorites to watch is the Cow Key Bridge 0K, which takes place the day after the 7 Mile Bridge Run. The short distance crossing the Cow Key Bridge brings out some of the best costumes of the year, and some of the most competitive runners in the Keys. Awards are given to fastest, slowest, and most unique. And, last year, two Key West Crossfit superwomen made it across the whole bridge on their hands!

The Key West “Bubba Awards” and “Best of Marathon” June and October Both fun nights celebrate the businesses and people in town that deserve praise. The categories, ranging from Best Key Lime Pie to Best Customer Service are always big hits in the community voting system.

Lyft/Uber currently operating in Key West In one of the biggest controversies of the year, ride share operators Lyft and Uber were granted access to operate in the Keys. The debate has since dwindled on the pros and cons, and it looks like they are here to stay and sharing the roads with local taxi drivers in harmony.

The People’s Amphitheater Feb. 2, 2017 Where to build it, what to name it, who’s going to pay for it: the Key West Amphitheater came with lots of questions, some still unanswered, but it is built and they will come – including Eddie Money playing on New Year’s Eve. The amphitheater opened its doors in October, hosting the annual Headdress Ball, and also recently a Keys Strong benefit.

Blinckmann is an artist and writer with bachelor’s degrees from Tufts University and The Museum School, both in Boston. After a 20-year career with oil painting, with numerous gallery shows in Key West and New England, she changed careers after writing her first novel, “In The Salt,” and now is a fulltime feature writer for The Keys Weekly newspaper. She lives in Key West with her husband and two sons.

Bowersox has written journalism, fiction and drama, but his concentration for the past 20 years has been writing for the screen and stage.

He’s written eight screenplays, several of which have won awards in prestigious competitions, including the Nicholl Fellowships, the Austin Film Festival, and the American Screenwriting Awards. One has been optioned for production. His recent plays, “Person of Interest,” “Moment of Grace,” “The Signature of Fear” and “The Return,” received their world premieres on the professional stage of Key West’s Red Barn Theatre. He lives and writes in Key West, where he is working on two new plays.

Michaels is the literary-award-winning author of the Gay Detective series.

“The Gay Detective: Nick and Norm in Chicago,” the first book of the series, won the Reader Views Award and the International Readers’ Favorite contest.

He was also a Best Book Award finalist and has been a featured author at Key West’s Authors’ Book Fair. He lives in Key West, whose motto of “One Human Family” he incorporates into his writing.

CODE ENFORCEMENT SPECIAL MAGISTRATE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that soliciting qualifications from licensed Florida attorneys to provide services in accordance with City of Marathon Ordinance 2017-03 and Florida Statutes Chapter 162.

The City is seeking the services of qualified individuals interested in providing Special Magistrate services for the City. The Special Magistrate shall serve a term of one (1) year from the date of appointment by the Marathon City Council. Special Magistrates may be reappointed for an additional one (1) year term at the discretion of the Council. There shall be no limit on the number of terms a person may serve as a Special Magistrate.

Late submittals and facsimile or email submissions will not be considered. The respondent shall bear all costs associated with the preparation and submission. Information submitted in response to this RFQ will become the property of the City and is subject to Florida public records law.

RFQs shall be prepared, addressed and submitted in compliance with detailed instructions as set forth in the RFQ documents. RFQ packages may be downloaded from www.Demandstar.com or picked up at City Hall, 9805 Overseas Highway, Marathon, Florida, 33050. A RFQ package will be available for inspection at City Hall.
