Dear Santa, This Christmas, as Dolphins Plus Oceanside transitions into the not for profit Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder (DPMMR), our focus is shifting to the conservation of wild and stranded marine mammals. As of January 1, 2018, every swim or educational experience will directly contribute toward the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured whales and dolphins.

With this in mind, Santa, DPMMR asks that you help us spread the word.

I wish for them to feel carefree and enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. Above all, I wish for them to understand that the true meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with presents, but with spending time with those who mean most to them. Ocean Studies students present their findings

T

he Murray Nelson Government Center was abuzz on Dec. 18 for Ocean Studies Charter School’s STEM fair. STEM – which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math – is an emerging curriculum-based approach to stirring interest in STEM-related concepts. After weeks of experimenting and documenting, students were more than eager to share their scientific findings with classmates and faculty.

Students were tasked to craft a testable hypothesis, list their methods, discuss independent, dependent, and controlled variables. Once they derived conclusions, students came up with even more testable questions.

The projects were judged by a local panel, as winners would then qualify for the district Monroe County Science Fair. A panel of experts ranging from cybersecurity experts to fighter pilots also spoke to students.

The projects tested a variety of questions that dealt with animated robotics, best soil for plant growth, aerodynamic cars, “genius hour,” magnetic cars that could limit pollution, and the effects of temperature on air pressure, to name a few.

Fischer Daly wanted to know if the mangroves around his home would survive a Category 5 hurricane.

“We found that they can survive a hurricane. So we took a leaf blower, figured out that it blew 157 miles per hour, and put it up against the mangrove.

It didn’t do much and my graph showed that,” said Daly.

As a follow up experiment, Daly said, he’d like to test whether the mangroves would survive a tornado.

BRAINY KIDS

“The reason STEM is so focused nowadays is that we’re losing scientists. My wife is a kindergarten teacher, and a lot are afraid to teach science.”

Ivy Hong focused her research on the shelf life of two homemade slimes she mixed herself. She dubbed one Laffy Taffy and the other Cheesecake, based on their textures. She hypothesized the Laffy Taffy, having fewer ingredients and less density, would last longer – and was proven correct. Now she’s planning on creating two more types of slime to test against the Laffy Taffy.

Third graders Julianna, Cash and Carson researched feline water preference, mangrove vs gumbo limbo growth, and dissolve times of salt vs. sugar, respectively.

Judge Derek Hagen, education program manager with the Coral Restoration Foundation, said STEM programs are more necessary now than ever before.

“The reason STEM is so focused nowadays is that we’re losing scientists. My wife is a kindergarten teacher, and a lot are afraid to teach science.

It’s a topic that’s being revitalized, so it’s inspiring to watch these kids get excited about. This is why I went into education,” said Hagen.

Judge Cathy Guinovart of Florida International University’s Aquarius Reef Base described what she believes is a well-rounded project.

“I’m looking for students that were able to see a real-world problem that they were able to find a solution for. We wanted to make sure they followed the procedure of the scientific method, with a hypothesis that could be proven or disproven, and for students that were able to communicate their research and understood the assignment.”

Christina Palacios, parent of first-grader Raphael, is ecstatic about Ocean Studies’ focus on STEM. A recent Keys transplant from Miami, Palacios said her son loves to go to school now.

“The projects, field labs, just being outside and being hands-on – they go to the environment instead of it being brought to them,” said Palacios. “He feels like he’s part of something bigger. He has skin in the game here. Every day he comes home, he has something interesting to tell us or something that he was excited about.”

D

uring Tavernier Community Association’s Dec. 14 meeting, Assistant County Administrator Kevin Wilson fielded a number of question regarding the status of post-Irma Harry Harris Park.

A packed room of residents voiced a number of concerns.

The park has been closed to the public since the hurricane hit on Sept.

Beginning in the weeks after the storm, the unified command, Emergency Support Function 10 – made up of the Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission – began surveying the nearby waters with overflights, NOAA satellite imagery, and response crews. FWCC would be charged with finding a place to store vessels displaced by Hurricane Irma and reconnect with the owners. The majority are being partially crushed and the detritus shipped to the mainland.

Concerned parents asked if the boats staged at the park might create a hazard for children later on, and what was being done about it. Some residents expressed frustration with what they believe is continued illegal dumping around the park. Other residents complained of an increase in rodents.

Representing the Upper Keys Little League Association, John Dunn voiced his concern for the condition of the baseball field and the need to get kids back to playing.

Tony Gonzalez, whose backyard meets the park property, said “I’ve caught two trespassers on my property and my neighbor’s property trying to get into the park to see what the boats have. One man just wanted to see ‘what kind of boat that is,’ but I asked

him to leave my property.”

On Dec. 16, Gonzalez said, a large contingent of laborers began work.

“They removed debris, repaired the fencing, and they put a barrier directly behind my house to make it hard for somebody to jump over the fence,” said Gonzalez, adding that the neighborhood and park briefly felt like a construction site. “They did a really good job over the weekend. It looks like they are doing the best they can.”

While the quick response may appear reactionary, the reality is that work crews had been scheduled to attend to the park and surrounding areas, according to Monroe County officials. The unified command had personnel on standby before the disaster. The Department of Environmental Protection was part of the unit until recently, but has left its counterparts with the safest removal practices. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary also partnered to help with removal.

Himes, a Coast Guard’ spokesman.

In emails shared with the Weekly

by Monroe County officials, FWCC reported that its personnel would begin the process of destroying and removing vessels on Dec. 18. Nearly half of the vessels at the park were expected to be removed. FWCC is still working to find owners of retrieved vessels for which the agency has not received ownership release waivers. The waiver allows FWCC to dispose of boats, whose owners lack the resources to retrieve or remove them.

FWCC officials have also left the door open for an end of January completion date, but acknowledge there could still be boats after. Also, FWCC reported it does not anticipate new incoming vessels by the end of December.

Citing the public’s safety around the boats as their major concern, FWCC officials said there is no immediate concern to protect the vessels in the park, as they were equally subject to theft and vandalism while they were in the water.

The boat ramp fix is completing its second level assessment phase to obtain an estimate, Wilson reported during the meeting. The next step is to get a structural engineer to visit and specifications for the fix.

As the area around the park is cleaned, from MM 91 and north, county residents can call Keys Sanitary Services at 305-451-2025 to schedule a trash pickup for certain items. For household hazardous waste and electronic waste, call 305-745-4307. Keys Sanitary Services typically removes trash piles within five days. Report any cases of illegal dumping to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. For questions about removing vessels from the water, call the FWCC Removal Hotline at 305-985-3744.

ort Lauderdale-based photographer Felipe Correa displayed his “From Mountains to Mangrove” exhibit at the Banyan Tree on Dec. 16. The lush garden was lined with more than 30 photos, displaying the beauty and disparity between the Wyoming wilderness and Florida. His fine art photography captured detailed shots of scenery from both, but also had cameos from a handful of a wildlife, including apex predators from each region. The project itself spanned four years.

While staying in a Wyoming cabin, Correa was fully immersed in nature. How immersed, you ask? Every trip to the outhouse was pre-empted by a quick “bear check.” Some of his photographs were taken locally at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Sanctuary.

CATCHING UP WITH THE GRINCH ON HIS 60TH BIRTHDAY

F

rom the most hated to the most loved.

That is the Grinch’s trajectory in the minds and hearts of millions and millions of Christmas lovers around the world. Born in 1957, the Grinch has had an amazing run in the public eye. With his 60th birthday approaching, the Weekly caught up with the Grinch in Whoville, where he leads the life of a quiet, semi-retired pillar of the community.

1. How’s the renovation of the cave on Mount Crumpit going? Chip and Joanna Gaines came and helped me. Joanna talked a little too much but I am really loving the wagon wheel theme.

2. When was the last time you saw Cindy Lou Who? Cindy and I meet up every Saturday for karaoke; our favorite duet is “Islands In The Stream.” Tuesdays is yoga.

3. You’ve become a respected citizen of Whoville. Can you tell us about your work on the Code Board? Well, as you know, the architecture in Whoville has always been a little wonky and unstable, so we have been upgrading the buildings to code.

7. Care to share your recipe for Whoroast-beast? The doc suggested I lay off the red meat since my heart grew 3 times its size, so now we just have a nice veggie lasagna spruced up with a little tofu. I am sort of baby vegan now, going green inside and out!

slamorada Fire Rescue and the Islamorada Firefighters Benevolent Association escorted the big man himself, Santa Claus, along with carolers, through the Purple Isles on Dec. 17. With Christmas only a few days away, Claus left the reindeer to rest, and made one last trip through Islamorada to gather some “extra” toys.

Stopping at 16 locations, Islamorada Fire Rescue and Claus picked up thousands of donated toys for the children of Monroe County. Some were taken to communities in Marathon and the Lower Keys by Islamorada Fire Rescue the next day. “It was probably one of our best years and best attended,” said Fire Chief Terry Abel. The merry convoy jingled all the way to North Plantation before Santa bid farewell and caught an Uber to the North Pole – as is tradition.

he Key Largo Boat parade was rescheduled to Dec. 16 after strong gusts postponed the original date. That didn’t deter Key Largo Boat Parade-goers and participants from getting in the holiday spirit.
