Christmas Camp The City of Marathon Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Winter Day Camp the week of Christmas (Dec. 26, 27, 28, 29) and the week of New Year’s Day (Jan. 2, 3, 4, 5). The cost is $40 per week. Campers may attend either week or both weeks. The camp runs daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is for ages 5-13. In an almost annual tradition, the Keys Weekly has once again asked the community to write to Santa. On the following pages you will read some standard stuff about prosperity for all and world peace, but also some pleas to stop biting the innocent and reconsider use of public spaces to grow medical marijuana. There is a stunning shortage of people begging Santa for forgiveness for crimes against humanity committed in 2017 (we know some of you are guilty!) but Michelle Maxwell’s letter contains plenty of threats. My Dearest Santa Claus, I am quite confident that you will find my name on the top of your “good” list and I therefore have a few requests, so sip your hot cocoa and please grant the following! First, I would like all the Marathon City Staff and Council to have a wonderful holiday season filled with happiness and time off work to relax after all the hard work they have provided our city. Second, I wish the state, federal government and FEMA will rapidly reimburse us for our hurricane damage and cleanup efforts. Next, I would like you to bestow patience, kindness and tenacity upon us all for this upcoming year.

Dear Santa, I actually have three ideas, and I couldn’t choose.

So here you go.

The first one is to create a Jurassic Park type thing on Boot Key. What kind of animals? I dunno. Like giraffes and hippos, a freakin’ zoo, that’s what I want on half the island. On the other half, I want to grow medical marijuana, okay? Medical marijuana. Think of all the revenue.

The second thing I would like is for people to stop walking in my office and saying, “You know your phones aren’t working?” Cuz yes, we know. And it’s really (expletive deleted) bugging me after four (expletive deleted) months. Okay, so if you could fix the phones and electronics at Keys Animal Hospital, Santa, that would be great.

Dear Santa, This is Tursi. All my fellow dolphins, sea lions, and I at Dolphin Research Center can’t wait for your arrival. You’re much more welcome than that last visitor, Irma. She earned a permanent place on the naughty list!

Our human family at Dolphin Research Center takes excellent care of us all year long. We normally have everything we need, but ever since the hurricane blew through, there has been a real lack in our lives.

People! Sure, we see the regular DRCers every day and we love them as much as they love us, but we’re used to many more folks coming in to see, learn about and play with us! I’m no diva, or at least not much of one, but I am the daughter of two of the original “Flipper” movie dolphins. This season, Santa, I would like just a few things: for families and loved ones to embrace the spirit of the season instead of the number of gifts or party invites they receive. I would like for individuals to take notice of others in their communities and spread good cheer to those who may not have much. While the Keys are going through their own rebirth (due to the September event) this season, I would like the people of the Keys to reflect upon their own renewal and be able to grow from this year. Chuck thinks he can get his wife’s permission, so all we will need is some cool clothes and to be able to sing and dance. We will also need our hair back. I can’t see this happening without hair.

Roman Gastesi, County Administrator Dear Santa, I don’t want to be an ingrate. Most people would be delighted at the unexpected gift of a boat showing up in their backyard. Unfortunately, this surprise came from Irma who, frankly, makes the Grinch, Scrooge and Burgermeister Meisterburger look like the Magi. She didn’t even have the courtesy to just leave it at my seawall. Oh, no, instead she swept it up and left it on my seawall, making it Marathon’s most unusual landscape decoration.

I double-checked with the Coast Guard that the vessel is, indeed, on the list for removal in that special program. I also realize there are dozens of boats that are environmental or navigational hazards that have to be lifted first.

So, I’m doing my best to stay on the nice list myself by being patient and understanding. But, Jiminy Christmas, Santa, the darned thing is huge and plopped there inches from my house!

I thought about leaving out a big platter of cookies as incentive for the crew on the barge. Would that help? It always worked with you. In the meantime, in the spirit of the season, I’m shining some laser lights on it for decoration.

Hopefully you won’t think I’m asking for too much, dear Santa, but all I really want for Christmas is to come home and have the boat not be there. Then I will finally be able to move forward with repairing the roof, the fence, and the seawall. (Yeah, thanks for that large, non-insurable expense, too, Irma.) Oh, and Santa, if you could get Citizens to settle the rest of my claim, that would be a bonus.

Dear Santa, 2017 has been a rough year for so many of us. So, for this year, my wish is simple. Please make 2018 be an amazing year for all of us on this tiny island chain. Help our friends, neighbors and family get their homes back up and running, help restore jobs and businesses to their former glory and get our islands and canals clean and pretty. We’ve come a long way already thanks to all the hard work of our community members, but, Santa, please help us get back to “normal.” Well, our normal.

Also, a personal wish, please ask the raccoons to stay out of our attic and away from my car.

A Christmas Poem for Santa They say Christmas is more than gifts, and I guess I can agree, but when I wake on Christmas morn I like expensive things under the tree.

Each year after a curated list is submitted to Santa on time, What I’ve asked for and what I receive don’t seem to be in line.

Let’s take last year for example, I wanted a bright blue box made by Tiffany and Company and filled with expensive rocks, But, on that Christmas morning, the only box under that tree was loaded full of lumps of coal and not the kind from Tiffany’s.

I think Santa forgot the mink.

And, in the place of that, sitting beside the box of coal were two obese, hairy cats.

Santa must have been confused, because I clearly requested a car.

But, left right beside the cats was a receipt from Don’s Place bar.

And, maybe my handwriting’s bad, because I specifically asked for shoes But sitting beside the cookies I left, was an empty bottle of booze.

In addition to the cats and booze left on the living room seat was proof of a $5,000 charge on a long Bare Assets receipt.

So Christmas season is here again, cue the carols and the bells.

And, once again I made the list to send in the North Pole mail.

I narrowed down the list and at Santa’s own behest, I tried to make myself real clear and lessened my request.

Dear Santa, here we are this year And, this ain’t a CENSORED request And, until this list is delivered, your elves ain’t gonna rest.

You better bring those diamonds, They better be clear and large.

And Tiffany, Hermès, and Louis best be the only CENSORED you charge.

Would you please talk to Mother Nature? She was very hard on us, putting us in Irma’s path. We are still in the process of recovering and would appreciate Mother Nature being easier on us in the coming year. This leads me to my second request.

“For the rat traps,” said AE1. “A few years ago, all the lights went out on the tree and we didn’t know why. We had to take a special trip to figure it out and sure enough, rats had eaten through the tree’s lights.”

GIVING OF THEIR TIME

Volunteer work restores FKSPCA parking lot

T

hirty-two volunteers turned out for the first community clean-up on Dec. 16 organized by the Middle Keys Action Network (MKAN). The workers moved construction debris and picked up trash and recyclables across from the FKSPCA Marathon animal shelter on Aviation Blvd., resulting in a totally clean parking area restored to the FKSPCA. Ernie Rhodes Plumbing allowed Donald Dyer to use its mini-bobcat and

mini-backhoe to pile up the big construction debris, to enable the city’s debris contractors to easily remove these last big piles.

The city’s Public Works staff provided rakes, shovels, safety cones, work gloves and trash bags, and arranged for Marathon Garbage Service to provide a second Dumpster.

The FKSPCA donated sandwiches, bottled water and other supplies.

The next MKAN community cleanup will be coordinated with the city, and scheduled after FDOT completes its final pickup along U.S.1. At the top of the priority list is the bike path adjacent to U.S.1 on the west end of Grassy Key. —Contributed

12,000 HOURS Volunteer group finishes its Keys mission

ll Hands and Hearts, a national volunteer organization, just pulled up stakes after three solid months of work in the Keys following Hurricane Irma. Locals will know them by their distinctive handprint T-shirts.

“At different times, we’ve had about 150 volunteers working in the islands,” said Neil Tweardy, logistics coordinator for All Hands and Hearts. “On any given week, we had about 30 to 40 people working. We’ve logged 12,000 hours.”

The volunteers, tools, cots and meals were spread out at different churches in Marathon and Big Pine Key, including Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church, St. Francis in the Keys and St. Columba Episcopal Church.

“The homeowners couldn’t be more appreciative. One homeowner even made a birthday cake for one of the helpers who celebrated their birthday while here volunteering.”

“The stories of the Keys residents have had a huge impact on all our volunteers,” Tweardy said. “More than just cleaning out drywall, we were striving to let the people of the Keys know that somebody cares about them and is here to assist them. By the way, what we witnessed in the Keys — people helping people, and the community coming together — was just amazing.”

Ron Burd, a board member of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, said, “These folks have been doing nothing but working from morning to evening. They are not just helping to restore homes, but helping to restore hope. There is great hope for the next generation seeing all these young people here helping.”

The scope of the work ranged from sawing up felled trees to bringing down rotten drywall.

The organization is actually a blend of two charities started immediately after the Thailand tsunami of 2004. David Campbell, former CEO of BBN Technologies, started All Hands Volunteers in 2005. Petra Nemcova, who herself was swept away by the tsunami and survived by clinging to a tree for eight hours, established Happy Hearts Fund in 2005. The two merged to become All Hands and Hearts in 2017. Many of the volunteers signed up through the All Hands and Hearts website.

“Among the groups were some high school kids from North Carolina, some students from an alternative school in Maine, and a corporate group from the hospitality industry,” Tweardy said.

2 On Dec. 15, one of the last days the organization was working in the Keys, the volunteers were working at a house on Pine Way. It suffered a 10-foot storm surge, a failed roof, and knocked down the railing of the steps leading to the house.

Tweardy said his disaster experience is mostly from catastrophes in the Midwest, mostly floods.

“Seeing massive 27-foot sailboats in the middle of someone’s yard, that’s pretty dramatic,” Tweardy said.

CATCHING UP WITH THE GRINCH ON HIS 60TH BIRTHDAY

F

rom the most hated to the most loved.

That is the Grinch’s trajectory in the minds and hearts of millions and millions of Christmas lovers around the world. Born in 1957, the Grinch has had an amazing run in the public eye. With his 60th birthday approaching, the Weekly caught up with the Grinch in Whoville, where he leads the life of a quiet, semi-retired pillar of the community.

1. How’s the renovation of the cave on Mount Crumpit going? Chip and Joanna Gaines came and helped me. Joanna talked a little too much but I am really loving the wagon wheel theme.

2. When was the last time you saw Cindy Lou Who? Cindy and I meet up every Saturday for karaoke; our favorite duet is “Islands In The Stream.” Tuesdays is yoga.

3. You’ve become a respected citizen of Whoville. Can you tell us about your work on the Code Board? Well, as you know, the architecture in Whoville has always been a little wonky and unstable, so we have been upgrading the buildings to code.

4. How’s Max? Is he getting up there in years? Yes he is; he stopped pulling the sled awhile back so he sleeps and watches Animal Planet most of the day.

5. Can you give us a hint … who is the 2017 Cheermeister? Well, it was going to be Jeffrey Tambor again … I think we are going to have an emergency special hearing.

6. We understand you are pursuing a master’s degree in Environmental Management of Mountain Areas (EMMA).

Can you tell us about this? Mountains are totally under-appreciated — everyone is like “save the beaches,” “save the oceans,” blah blah blah. It’s a Rocky Mountain high for a reason.

7. Care to share your recipe for Whoroast-beast? The doc suggested I lay off the red meat since my heart grew 3 times its size, so now we just have a nice veggie lasagna spruced up with a little tofu. I am sort of baby vegan now, going green inside and out!

8. The lyrics of “Welcome Christmas,” though. What does “Fahoo fores dahoo dores” really mean? Oh, my, that’s a funny story. I was screaming at them ”Hey You, Yahoo Chorus!” I was my old grumpy self, and gosh darn it, those little Whos switched it up on me.

9. There’s a quiet rumor out there about your good works. Which projects are closest to your heart? Everything is close to my heart now that it’s so big! Ha. But seriously, I have taken up knitting and make sweaters for the local SPCA dogs. Max inspired me.

10. What books are on your bedside table? “Leaning In” by Sheryl Sandberg; I think it’s really timely right now, very inspirational.

11. If you could have any superhero power, what would you choose? Teleportation. Now that Max is out of commission, I hate walking all the way to Whoville. My Fitbit says it’s like 5,000 steps.

12. If you could have lunch with any one person, whom would you choose? Cat in the Hat; can’t figure out why people like him so much.

13. Kill, marry, or shag: Dr. Seuss, Jim Carrey, Mayor Augustus Maywho? Kill Maywho, shag Jim, marry Dr. S. 14. Favorite social media platform?

MEET THE EAGLES Three Florida Keys Boy Scouts participated in their boards of review recently and were promoted to the rank of Eagle Scout. OBITUARY

Nick Aldacosta Nick Aldacosta passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 15, 2017, much to the surprise of his friends. We thought he was invincible.

Nick spent 69 of his 70 years living in Marathon. One of the most noted and notorious fishing legends in the Keys, his career began at age 7.

Nick’s love of food, libations and jokes were also legendary. He “held court” at Faro Blanco Resort for decades, moving his one-man show

to the Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House in 1999 with wife Annette and dearest friend John Ely. No one could escape his poignant advice, menu suggestions and cheerful banter, with a “segue” to the next joke … “That reminds me of a story” being a favorite line.

He was the first one to put his hand in his pocket for a friend in need and an extraordinary networker — he could always find someone to help you in a crunch.

His love for his family and friends were beyond measure.

Nick is predeceased by his mother Pat, father Bolla and brother Ted. He is survived by his brothers Joe and Whitney and sister Barbara, his son Nicky and daughter Tristan and Tristan’s mother, Annette.

Nick’s son, Nick Aldacosta Jr., invites his dad’s friends and family to a celebration of life in what he called his “living room” — the Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House — on Tuesday, Dec. 26 between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

There will be complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Those with photos in any format are encouraged to bring them to share on the projection screen.

WORDS AROUND THE WORLD H Essay could win scholarship for global study igh school students in Monroe County have a shot at scholarships to study abroad next summer.

Thirty winners of the 2018 Global Leaders essay competition will receive merit-based scholarships of 50 percent off to study at one of 32 programs around the globe run

by The Experiment in International Living.

This marks the second year for the essay competition in Monroe County. In the 2017 competition, eight winners from four local high schools – Coral Shores High School, Key West Collegiate Academy, Key West High School and Marathon High School – traveled to programs in Germany, Thailand, Ecuador, China, France, Japan and Tanzania.

“The Experiment provides young people in Monroe County the opportunity to broaden their horizons, to immerse in other cultures, and to gain much needed skills in a rapidly changing and increasingly dynamic world,” said Aaron Morehouse, executive director of The Experiment in International Living and vice president of World Learning.

Additional financial aid will be made available to students who exhibit need in the application process. Need-based scholarships range from $250 to $3,000.

A total of 29 students from Monroe County participated in Experiment programs around the world in 2017, making it the largest concentration of students participating of any U.S. county outside of the New York City metropolitan area.

The Marathon Weekly is proud to partner with Marathon Middle School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.”

Recipients are chosen on qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and MMS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Fin Pride.”

What organizations and activities are you involved with at MMS and why are they important to you?

I’m involved in soccer because I have been playing since I was 5 years old.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Ms. Walker’s civics classes because I get to learn about the political views of the U.S. What advice would you give your classmates? Pay attention in your classes and keep a high GPA.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MMS? I want to be remembered for being me.

What are your plans after high school? I am planning to attend university and then take over the world.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? Human DNA just in case humans are extinct by then.

What would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I mean to become a neurosurgeon.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? I do not think I will, but I will probably buy a vacation home here.

MERRY HOLIDAZE And a Happy Christmas to All!

I

n these special times of peace and good will toward our fellow man, there’s surely one thing a person can say that will draw the ire of certain celebrants: Happy Holidays.

I’m sorry, but that bit of political correctness has just gone a bit too far for some who feel that there’s this vast conspiracy to dilute or minimize the celebration of the word that cannot be said: Christmas. Yes, Virginia, there are people who believe that saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” will somehow make people forget the true meaning of the holiday and turn us all into atheistic solstice-celebrating heathens. Peace on Earth my hindquarters (and Merry Christmas, Syria)!

Radio talk show hosts, television commentators, and other such pundits have taken a position that equates “Happy Holidays” with “I’m an unpatriotic Jesus-hater.” And just forget “Seasons Greetings” – that’s right out. Some of these voices in the media have declared that there is a war on Christmas being waged by “secular progressives.” Fox News bit player John Gibson actually once wrote a book titled “The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought.”

And you just thought you were wishing someone “Happy Holidays.”

The truth is that there are a number of holidays celebrated this time of year (perhaps that’s why they call it “the holiday season”). Christmas now begins sometime in October, because the first holiday (I mean Christmas) displays go up in the stores before Halloween. November brings us Thanksgiving, which is notable for the arrival of the patron saint of Thanksgiving (Santa Claus) in New York City at the Holiday Temple (Christmas Shrine) known as Macy’s.

And December? Christmas is basically celebrated all month long, with parties, decorations, lights, libations and fattening sugar-laden treats. By the way, there’s also Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve. There are other truths about our Christmas traditions that may not be as well known as others. First of all, there is no biblical reference that states that Jesus was born in December. The early Christian church chose December so that it could compete with pagan solstice rituals going on at the same time. Santa Claus (formerly St. Nicholas) was the Bishop of Myra (located in present-

day Turkey) and was reputed to be generous and kind to children before he was given a new red suit and exiled to the North Pole.

The Christmas we celebrate today is a combination of festivities and traditions of many cultures. And it happens at a time of year that combines a number of other celebrations into one big event known as the Holiday Season. And who’s making rules that say we can’t celebrate all of them? The more, the merrier in this merriest of seasons, I say.

One Christmas tradition that deserves to be celebrated is the concept of peace on Earth to men of good will. Judging from the not-so-peaceful history of the past 2,000 years, there haven’t been too many “men of good will.” That’s a change I’d certainly like to see, and that’s a change we could all believe in. And maybe that’s what the Holiday Season is really all about.

Perhaps one day, when we remove our collective head from our collective backside, we may come a little closer to real peace on Earth. Condemning those who wish us Happy Holidays as anti-Christian warriors, however, won’t get us there.

So Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa, Peaceful Solstice, and a Happy New Year to all. Whatever holiday(s) you celebrate, make a joyful noise and have a wonderful time.

ROCKING ROCKETTE TO GALLERY GODDESS “I’ve been creating art since I was little”

anine Derleth can light up just about any room with her smile, but it started lighting up ballrooms at a young age.

The artist, who owns Giorgione Gallery in Gulfside Village in Marathon, grew up with four brothers and a mom who was a professional dancer. “I was going to dance,” she said. “Tap, toe, dig, heel, shuffle – what kid didn’t want to make noises like that?”

Before moving to Manhattan to dance in what could be considered one of the most famous dance lines in America, the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, she was the youngest, shortest dancer on the Las Vegas strip, with a handwritten letter from Sheriff Ralph Lamb allowing her to be out past curfew.

Late one night, while dancing in a nightclub, she caught the eye of her now husband, Theo.

“We were inseparable from that moment,” she said, taking a job with him just so she could see him again. “We said our vows on our fifth date. I knew he was the one the night I met him.”

Holding principal roles in Broadway shows like “A Chorus Line,” “42nd Street” and “The Cotton Club,” she listens to music in the background of her studio. “I just love this song, it’s called ‘Hang On Little Tomato,’” she says, humming along.

The walls of the half dance studio/ half art gallery are hung with her and Theo’s dancing accomplishments throughout the years. She is especially proud of the Marathon locals who have gone on to win national dancing competitions.

Her art is filled with scenes of places she loves, things that move her, and things that she finds beautiful. “I’ve been creating art since I was little,” she said, selling two custom pieces during the interview. Her specialties include oil paintings with brush techniques and knife skills.

Her forte lately has been restoration projects since Hurricane Irma. “A lot of people lost pictures and artwork from the storm,” she said. “I especially like restoration projects.” Derleth has been in the Keys for 14 years, and knows the pain of hurricane damage, losing her home in Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

She can also work from old photos or portraits, and enjoys painting family homes and commissioned pieces.

Derleth has several projects going at a time, since oil sometimes needs time in between coats to dry. She sees art in everything, from flower pots to even the ceramic pelicans that sit on her neighbor’s dock. “They needed a coat of paint,” she said of the now almost lifelike dock decorations.
