ell, it was an overwhelming win, proving some movies are timeless, even if they were made in the ’80s. Honestly, there are a lot of Christmas movies to choose from, like the classics “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “The Grinch” (circa 1966 of course) or the funny “Home Alone” or – no contest – Chevy in “A Christmas Vacation.” But it came down to a fluffy bunny suit, a double dog dare and a Red Ryder BB gun. So we asked locals, out of all the Scrooges and Frostys:

What is your favorite Christmas movie?

“My girlfriend would want me to say ‘Elf,’” said Brian Bradley. “But no, it’s really ‘A Christmas Story.’”

“We stream ‘A Christmas Story’ all day,” said Gary Volenec.

“Hands down, ‘A Christmas Story,’” said Chris Davis.

Dear Santa,

I hope all is well and yes, I would like a huge gift this year for Christmas. This might be a tall order, but I believe you can swing it. I would love to give all of our lovely tourists a copy of my new book.

It’s Called “Red Light/Green Light.”

It’s a step-by-step manual on how to cross a street and how to look both ways. It comes with some new hit songs as well, like “Cross on the Green and not in between” and also that timeless favorite, “Oh, a car’s coming, let’s jump in.” If you could give this gift it would make my day. As an added bonus i will give everyone a copy of my second book, “What’s the yellow light for?

Well, it’s been a Dumpster fire of a year, old man, and I’ve been wracking my brain about this year’s letter. Am I shallow enough to write a list filled with the latest gadgetry, handbags, and makeup (I’m thinking iPhone X, a Birkin, and the new Urban Decay Naked Vault—just in case) while so many people are struggling? Do I write you a pithy list wishing ill on my many enemies?

I just can’t. It’s been too much, too hard, for even my cold, black heart to be selfish this year.

To be honest, Santa, I want to thank you for the little elves that you’ve planted throughout the Keys that are already bringing much needed cheer. The elves that decorated Fred on the old 7 Mile Bridge; the elves that decorated the tip top of the pine tree on Sugarloaf; the elves that spelled out “Ho, Ho, Ho” on their houses off of U.S.1; the elves that decorated debris piles in Big Pine; the elves that put up a 20-foot penguin on Flagler (ok, that was me… but it did take a lot of Christmas spirit to pull it off).

So this year Santa, you can take the Yalcer Inn off of your list – we have everything that we need and could want – and take some extra time for a family that really needs you. You gave me some extra Christmas Spirit and that’s all I wanted.

Dear Santa,

I was good this year, really. That one time back in January shouldn’t count because it was too early in the year and everyone deserves a do over.

This has been a tough year for so many families. This year’s wish list: - Roofs for those that have been damaged - A place to call home for those still in hotels or staying with family and friends this season - The ability for those in tents and campers to be able to get back into their homes - Helping hands for those trying to rebuild on their own - Food for those not able to get their own - Peace, love, joy, and happiness for this Holiday Season

I have been very good this year – well for the most part, with an occasional slipup here and there.

There are a lot of things that I want, but don’t need, and considering I live in a space the size of a shoebox – I thought that I would ask you for things for my friends instead (especially since I don’t know how good they have been).

Here goes: • M.B. wants a PlayStation 4.

• B.R. wants some really good bands to come to Key West.

• C.B. wants a new Nook e-reader to replace the one that Irma borrowed and never brought back.

• B.H. wants nothing, as he is very happy and content (probably for the best because I am pretty sure he has been a little naughty).

• R.M. could really use a spa day.

• C.P. never wants to fly coach again – only first class, please.

• A.W. just wants a new wetsuit (not sure what he has been doing in his current one).

• A.L. would like a reasonable insurance settlement.

• C.B. wants a 49-feet Garlington, but also wouldn’t kick a 60-feet Hatteras out of his slip.

• T.H. wants a two-week Mexican vacation that includes free drinks.

Other than the above-mentioned items, please bring happiness and health to all… and maybe a new dock onto which I can tie up my home.

May we all remember the importance of friends, family, and community. It takes all of us working together to make it through.

A Christmas Poem for Santa Love, Michelle Maxwell They say Christmas is more than gifts, and I guess I can agree, but when I wake on Christmas morn I like expensive things under the tree.

I narrowed down the list and at Santa’s own behest, I tried to make myself real clear and lessened my request.

Each year after a curated list is submitted to Santa on time, What I’ve asked for and what I receive don’t seem to be in line.

Dear Santa, here we are this year And, this ain’t a CENSORED request And, until this list is delivered, your elves ain’t gonna rest.

Let’s take last year for example, I wanted a bright blue box made by Tiffany and Company and filled with expensive rocks,

You better bring those diamonds, They better be clear and large.

And Tiffany, Hermès, and Louis best be the only CENSORED you charge.

But, on that Christmas morning, the only box under that tree was loaded full of lumps of coal and not the kind from Tiffany’s.

And CENSORED, about that mink Make it a full length sable Dior best be the name written on the label.

I think Santa forgot the mink.

And, in the place of that, sitting beside the box of coal were two obese, hairy cats.

And while you’re here, take back the cats I can’t do it any more.

Add a case of Veuve Select while you’re at the liquor store.

Santa must have been confused, because I clearly requested a car.

But, left right beside the cats was a receipt from Don’s Place bar.

This list is not negotiable.

If all these items I don’t see on December CENSORED 26th, expect a divorce decree.

And, maybe my handwriting’s bad, because I specifically asked for shoes But sitting beside the cookies I left, was an empty bottle of booze.

So, Merry Christmas, Santa thanks for your careful attention, while you’re reading my Christmas list there’s one more thing to mention,

In addition to the cats and booze left on the living room seat was proof of a $5,000 charge on a long Bare Assets receipt.

I’m done with being good all year, just to beg for what I should already have So this year I’m spending all my time in the pursuit of being bad.

So Christmas season is here again, cue the carols and the bells.

And, once again I made the list to send in the North Pole mail.

Don’t expect to hear from me around this time next year, I’ll be sitting on someone else’s lap in the tropics drinking beer.

Boy, it’s been a challenge to be good this past year! But I think I did ok, and naughty is such a relative term. So here’s my list of 10 wishes. Please bring me…

1. Two tickets to “Hamilton.”

House seats would be nice.

2. A role in “Hamilton.” My rap skills suck, but my King George III is acceptable.

3. Free Sassy. Lock up the Perv.

4. A magical return of my 29-inch waistline from my dancing days of circa 1978.

5. Dinner/lunch/drinks/coffee/ whatever with Stephen Sondheim. The theater gossip alone!

6. A lump of coal for Steve Bannon. Better, a truckload. And a one-way ticket back to his swamp.

7. Many more videos from Randy Rainbow. His material is endless.

8. Karma to be rained down on anyone who thinks big game hunting is a good idea. I’m looking at you, spawn of 45.

9. Daily pints of Talenti gelato without any weight consequences. See #4.

10. It’s a lot to ask with so many great entertainment options in Key West, but please bring full houses for every show at the Waterfront Playhouse!

Dear Santa, This year I would first and foremost like to ask that you help our neighbors to the north of us, and all throughout the Florida Keys, who suffered the impact of Hurricane Irma. Here in Key West we are able to count our many blessings, and we were able to work hard and get back on our feet quickly, but the residents a little way up the road could really use your help to recover. They are doing a wonderful job. They are staying positive and honoring the true meaning of Christmas, by focusing on their family and friends and helping one another, even though they are faced with difficult times. I ask that you bring some much needed joy, extra holiday cheer and more meaningful and special gifts to encourage them and lift the spirits of the people of our island chain.

And Santa, for myself, I ask that you bring me a special Christmas present too… a new daily newspaper. One that is fair and balanced, one that really cares about the people in our community. One that does not thrive on the misfortune of others. Santa maybe you can bring some Christmas magic along and make the Keys Weekly that new paper, since it’s always there for the community, always honest and just a great example of workmanship and quality reporting and coverage of the Florida Keys.

The “Keys Love Festival” raised thousands of dollars for KeysStrong.org while entertaining residents with supreme local singing and songwriting talent. awyer Ashley Sybesma, a senior associate with local law firm Smith Hawks, PL, will be awarded the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award on Jan. 25 in Tallahassee. The award is given to one lawyer from each of the state’s 20 judicial circuits. Sybesma was nominated by Bonnie J. Helms, circuit judge and member of the 16th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee.

“After Hurricane Irma devastated parts of the Florida Keys, Ms. Sybesma was one of the leaders of our legal community who assisted individuals impacted by the storm,” Helms wrote in her nomination. “She helped with organizing and volunteered for some of the disaster assistance clinics set up in the community.

She was also involved in advising Monroe County Bar Association

members of pro bono opportunities available as the number of inquiries to the association increased daily after the storm.”

Sybesma moved to Key West three years ago from Miami to join the Smith Hawks firm.

“After the hurricane, I took on several cases here locally and through The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division FEMA disaster hotline,” she said. “I’m a firm believer in every little bit counts, so I try and do a little bit here and there.”

“I was so overwhelmed that those in my community would think I should receive this award; it is humbling and inspiring,” said Sybesma.

12,000 HOURS Volunteer group finishes its Keys mission

ll Hands and Hearts, a national volunteer organization, just pulled up stakes after three solid months of work in the Keys following Hurricane Irma. Locals will know them by their distinctive handprint T-shirts.

“At different times, we’ve had about 150 volunteers working in the islands,” said Neil Tweardy, logistics coordinator for All Hands and Hearts. “On any given week, we had about 30 to 40 people working. We’ve logged 12,000 hours.”

The volunteers, tools, cots and meals were spread out at different churches in Marathon and Big Pine Key, including Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church, St. Francis in the Keys and St. Columba Episcopal Church.

“The homeowners couldn’t be more appreciative. One homeowner even made a birthday cake for one of the helpers who celebrated their birthday while here volunteering.”

“The stories of the Keys residents have had a huge impact on all our volunteers,” Tweardy said. “More than just cleaning out drywall, we were striving to let the people of the Keys know that somebody cares about them and is here to assist them. By the way, what we witnessed in the Keys — people helping people, and the community coming together — was just amazing.”

Ron Burd, a board member of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, said, “These folks have been doing nothing but working from morning to evening. They are not just helping to restore homes, but helping to restore hope. There is great hope for the next generation seeing all these young people here helping.”

The scope of the work ranged from sawing up felled trees to bringing down rotten drywall.

The organization is actually a blend of two charities started immediately after the Thailand tsunami of 2004. David Campbell, former CEO of BBN Technologies, started All Hands Volunteers in 2005. Petra Nemcova, who herself was swept away by the tsunami and survived by clinging to a tree for eight hours, established Happy Hearts Fund in 2005. The two merged to become All Hands and Hearts in 2017. Many of the volunteers signed up through the All Hands and Hearts website.

“Among the groups were some high school kids from North Carolina, some students from an alternative school in Maine, and a corporate group from the hospitality industry,” Tweardy said.

2 On Dec. 15, one of the last days the organization was working in the Keys, the volunteers were working at a house on Pine Way. It suffered a 10-foot storm surge, a failed roof, and knocked down the railing of the steps leading to the house.

Tweardy said his disaster experience is mostly from catastrophes in the Midwest, mostly floods.

“Seeing massive 27-foot sailboats in the middle of someone’s yard, that’s pretty dramatic,” Tweardy said.

Essay could win scholarship for global study

igh school students in Monroe County have a shot at scholarships to study abroad next summer.

Thirty winners of the 2018 Global Leaders essay competition will receive merit-based scholarships of 50 percent off to study at one of 32 programs around the globe run by The Experiment in International Living.

This marks the second year for the essay competition in Monroe County. In the 2017 competition, eight winners from four local high schools – Coral Shores High School, Key West Collegiate Academy, Key West High School and Marathon High School – traveled to programs in Germany, Thailand, Ecuador, China, France, Japan and Tanzania.

“The Experiment provides young people in Monroe County the opportunity to broaden their horizons, to immerse in other cultures, and to gain much needed skills in a rapidly changing and increasingly dynamic world,” said Aaron Morehouse, executive director of The Experiment in International Living and vice president of World Learning.

Additional financial aid will be made available to students who exhibit need in the application process. Need-based scholarships range from $250 to $3,000.

A total of 29 students from Monroe County participated in Experiment programs around the world in 2017, making it the largest concentration of students participating of any U.S. county outside of the New York City metropolitan area.

CATCHING UP WITH THE GRINCH ON HIS 60TH BIRTHDAY

F

rom the most hated to the most loved.

That is the Grinch’s trajectory in the minds and hearts of millions and millions of Christmas lovers around the world. Born in 1957, the Grinch has had an amazing run in the public eye. With his 60th birthday approaching, the Weekly caught up with the Grinch in Whoville, where he leads the life of a quiet, semi-retired pillar of the community.

1. How’s the renovation of the cave on Mount Crumpit going? Chip and Joanna Gaines came and helped me. Joanna talked a little too much but I am really loving the wagon wheel theme.

2. When was the last time you saw Cindy Lou Who? Cindy and I meet up every Saturday for karaoke; our favorite duet is “Islands In The Stream.” Tuesdays is yoga.

3. You’ve become a respected citizen of Whoville. Can you tell us about your work on the Code Board? Well, as you know, the architecture in Whoville has always been a little wonky and unstable, so we have been upgrading the buildings to code.

4. How’s Max? Is he getting up there in years? Yes he is; he stopped pulling the sled awhile back so he sleeps and watches Animal Planet most of the day.

5. Can you give us a hint … who is the 2017 Cheermeister? Well, it was going to be Jeffrey Tambor again … I think we are going to have an emergency special hearing.

6. We understand you are pursuing a master’s degree in Environmental Management of Mountain Areas (EMMA).

Can you tell us about this? Mountains are totally under-appreciated — everyone is like “save the beaches,” “save the oceans,” blah blah blah. It’s a Rocky Mountain high for a reason.

7. Care to share your recipe for Whoroast-beast? The doc suggested I lay off the red meat since my heart grew 3 times its size, so now we just have a nice veggie lasagna spruced up with a little tofu. I am sort of baby vegan now, going green inside and out!

8. The lyrics of “Welcome Christmas,” though. What does “Fahoo fores dahoo dores” really mean? Oh, my, that’s a funny story. I was screaming at them ”Hey You, Yahoo Chorus!” I was my old grumpy self, and gosh darn it, those little Whos switched it up on me.

9. There’s a quiet rumor out there about your good works. Which projects are closest to your heart? Everything is close to my heart now that it’s so big! Ha. But seriously, I have taken up knitting and make sweaters for the local SPCA dogs. Max inspired me.

10. What books are on your bedside table? “Leaning In” by Sheryl Sandberg; I think it’s really timely right now, very inspirational.

11. If you could have any superhero power, what would you choose? Teleportation. Now that Max is out of commission, I hate walking all the way to Whoville. My Fitbit says it’s like 5,000 steps.

12. If you could have lunch with any one person, whom would you choose? Cat in the Hat; can’t figure out why people like him so much.

SURPRISES ON TAP Variety is key for house tour

F

ive Key West homes – with “surprises” inside – launch the 58th season of the Old Island Restoration Foundation’s home tours.

The tour is scheduled for Wednesday & Thursday, Dec. 27 and 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. Attendees can split the visits over two days and view the homes in any order. The complete tour is about 4 miles and is suitable for bikes as a transportation option.

OIRF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of architectural treasures in Key West and to the celebration of historical achievements on the island.

Funds from the tours will be used to maintain the Oldest House, for the foundation’s grants program, scholarships and other endeavors.

Here are the featured homes for December (those marked with an asterisk are on narrow, dead-end lanes and visitors are asked not to drive on those lanes):

This century-old shotgun house, like many others, was picked up and relocated. Behind the façade and cheerful Christmas decorations is a just-completed, thoroughly 21st century home. This major renovation and addition is also a tutorial on efficient space utilization.

Off the Angela Street side of the Key West Cemetery, take the dead-end lane to an exotic carved gate. It shields a tropical garden. A 19th century Bahamian cottage (or is it two or three moved together?) seems to have been transported to southeast Asia, but it retains its Key West character.

“HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH” OPENS IN KEY WEST

his isn’t theater for the delicate or humdrum. This is theater for the all-out rock n’ roll, punk-loving, ready-for-a-sonic-explosion of entertainment audiences who want to be jolted and have a righteous good time. One of the most popular rock musicals ever, “Hedwig and The Angry Inch” opens at the Key West Theater Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 13, and it would be a shame to miss.

Andrew Palermo was invited by Juliet Gray, the theater’s artistic performing arts director, to direct and choreograph the Key West production. “I’m learning the play is personal, but at the same time, I have a lot of reverence for it,” said Palermo, who was motivated after seeing his lifelong friend, business partner and actor, Taye Diggs’ Broadway version of the play in 2015.

“Taye told me, you can’t #*$@ it up because it’s just so well written.”

The play’s original music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask based on the book by John Cameron Mitchell which hit off-Broadway in 1998. Since then it has revived itself as a movie starring Mitchell, winning multiple awards, and on Broadway in 2014-15 to Tony acclaim.

The story is about poor Hedwig, a German rock singer man-woman who suffered a botched sex change

and cruelly has no good relationships except with his audience. It is ripe with innuendo, humor and soul-searching, drawing audiences into Hedwig’s hell and heart. With a Bowie-esque flare, the production isn’t dated but alive, like a modern cabaret.

“What I love to do as an artist is mix form. The production has concert dance, modern music, rock, punk, ballads, and even a fun country number,” said Palermo.

Playing Hedwig is Phillip Cole White, who recently starred in “129 Miles from Walmart,” “Oklahoma Smith and the Pantheon of Annihilation” and as an outstanding Billy Bibbit from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” at TheatreXP. “Phillip is so incredible; he is game for anything and was born to play this role,” said Palermo.

“It’s such a wonderful, fun piece with so much heart and rock n roll,” said Juliet Gray, who chose the production. “With the theater’s sound system, you live in the music.”

“D

ancing Lessons” is so heartwarmingly funny and sweet, it’s the perfect entertainment for this holiday. The newest play written

by Mark St. Germain hits all the heartstrings, and The Red Barn Theatre has reached a high note tackling this production directed by Joy Hawkins and delightfully acted by Carolyn Cooper and Dave Bootle.

“Are we capable of change?” asks character Ever Montgomery, summarizing the journey of this mismatched, afflicted couple facing their insurmountable odds.

The story is an unusual one, about an injured dancer, Senga Quinn, played by Cooper, and an autistic professor, Ever Montgomery, played by Bootle. The two are neighbors in New York City. Ever suffers from Asperger’s, a form of autism, and must attend a banquet to receive an award. famed neighbor Senga, the beautiful but bitter dancer. Crippled and in a cast due to an accident, Senga may never dance again and is holed up in her apartment, living on pills, booze and junk food. The unlikely duo clumsily strike up a relationship that is awkward, charming and inspirational.

Bootle has all the best comedic moments, as Ever’s autism allows him to say whatever he is thinking with deadpan wit – when he meets Senga, looking around her apartment, he asks, “Did I interrupt a suicide attempt?” Bootle’s characterization of an autistic is sophisticated and respectfully adds physical comedy to the mix. So suspenseful was the moment Ever allows Senga to touch and even kiss him, not a sound could be heard from the audience.

The play also becomes a lesson in the sincere challenges facing people with autism compared with what Ever funnily refers to as “neurotypicals.”

Cooper’s acting portrays a delicate ease and gentleness that is an engaging match.

“Couldn’t be happier with these two people on stage,” said director Hawkins. It’s refreshing how the characters have so little pity for each other and somehow become the odd couple of romance. Filled with honest moments and well-timed one liners, the play is a delight.

Passerbys honk and take pictures out their window as they see the elves in action.

After about eight hours, the mission is complete and Fred isn’t the only thing that is lit. The trip back is filled with high-fives, and fun stories mostly about the need for peanut butter in the supply kit.

“For the rat traps,” said AE1. “A few years ago, all the lights went out on the tree and we didn’t know why. We had to take a special trip to figure it out and sure enough, rats had eaten through the tree’s lights.”

Who knew?

So, thank you, anonymous elves, for completing the task every year and brightening the spirit of the Florida Keys (and giving random boys at the bar something to brag about).
