Local brewery adds distillery

n Dec. 9, Islamorada Beer Company celebrated its third birthday by expanding its expertise into distilling. It almost seemed like a no-brainer that the first liquor produced by Islamorada Distilling would be a rum for rum-runners. Producing both an aged and dark-aged blend, Islamorada Distilling’s first batch will be kept in new oak barrels while it matures. Then the oak barrels can be repurposed for barrel-aging craft beer. The distillery has plans to make whiskey and gin, too, according to co-owner Tyrone Bradley.

As part of the event, the brewery also launched its Captain Series Beers, inspired by local fishing captains, including Matt Bellinger’s Go Fish Blonde Ale, Aaron Brower’s Buzz On Charters Vanilla Coffee Stout, Sara Stanczyk’s Bud n Mary’s Blueberry Ale, Trevor Frins’ Hillbilly Deluxe Key Lime Blonde, and Skip Bradeen’s Blue Chip Brew Blood Orange Wheat.

air Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) was the only grassroots entity mentioned in the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s (OIR) order filed on Dec. 6. The order freezes rate increases for Monroe County Citizens Insurance policy holders.

“It is gratifying that OIR has taken the steps to look at the things we have been asking them to look at all these years,” said FIRM Advisory Board Member and Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers. “We have been asking them for 11 years to look at our surge versus wind damages and our stringent building codes. They finally listened.”

After considering testimony and documents from FIRM and comments received from residents of Monroe County, OIR Commissioner David Altmaier ordered homeowners’ windstorm rates for Monroe County to remain at current levels.

Over the last several years, rate increases have been around 10 percent every year. FIRM testified at the rate hearings that Citizens windstorm insurance rates are unjustifiably high for Monroe County, resulting in Monroe County premiums being more than $750 million higher than claims since 2004.

“After a storm like Irma, I am glad they didn’t add insult to injury,” she said.

Marathon homeowner Mary Stella said she is glad there is a freeze. “I already pay nearly $5,000 a year in premiums with a 2 percent deductible,” she said. But, her real qualm is more with the aftermath of Irma. “I take serious issue with

homeowners having to hire their own adjusters or otherwise do battle with Citizens to get fair settlement of our legitimate claims.”

FIRM President Mel Montagne said in a press release that the rate freeze is a big win for the residents of Monroe County, especially as so many are rebuilding after Hurricane Irma.

“We are so grateful for the support we receive from our state and local elected officials and the local governments and associations who continue to financially support our efforts, and especially to our members, who donate, volunteer, send comments and continue to fight alongside us,” he said. “There is more work to be done, as condo and mobile home rates will continue to rise, but this result is truly good news for us.”

FIRM is also awaiting the results of its lawsuit against the OIR concerning the 2017 rate increases. FIRM states that OIR wrongly denied Monroe County policy holders the right to present a case against unjustifiably high and unaffordable wind insurance rates. If FIRM is permitted to move its case forward, FIRM will show that the rate setting methodology utilized by Citizens and approved by OIR is flawed as it relates to Monroe County. FIRM’s attorneys presented oral arguments before the First Appellate Court in October.

FIRM is a grassroots organization that started in 2006 to fight for property owners’ rights in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. In addition to advocacy, the group keeps the community in the know with events like flood mitigation workshops. The next workshops take place Jan. 16 in Marathon, Jan. 17 in Key Largo, and Jan. 18 in Key West.

The group, which has 3,700 members and is free to join, has a monthly e-newsletter to keep members up-todate with flood and wind news. To join, visit firmkeys.org.

BAYGRASS LAUNCHES SEASON

CE’s first major event of its new season is the sixth annual BayGrass bluegrass music fest on Jan. 12, 13, and 14. Also featured this season is the 24th annual Bay Jam music fest, and individual performers and bands, including rising star Grace Pettis and the Sultans of String band.

“ICE will have stronger focus on community philanthropy and support for the local arts scene,” said David Feder, director of ICE. “New programs and established activities that work with local schools to promote art, music and dance will be central in those efforts.”

2018 will be the third year of ICE’s Drumming Workshop for special needs students at local schools, with professional drummers instructing students. And ICE will continue to provide local students with grants to advance their artistic and musical aspirations. More than $400,000 has been donated since 1998.

“Another example is our BayGrass and Craft Beer Festival partnering with the Everglades Science Center to showcase organizations working on Florida Bay research and Everglades restoration,” said Feder.

In early December, ICE sponsored an On Your Toes dance studio performance at the Islamorada Holiday Festival.

More events may be scheduled.

ICE is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting quality entertainment and supporting cultural events in the Upper Keys. Proceeds from its events provide music, dance, and arts scholarships, grants to school programs, and infrastructure to local not-for-profit events and organizations.

idway Café’s colorful paint job and wacky signs make it a distinctive landmark from U.S.1. The breakfast/ lunch spot is midway between Miami and Key West, 80 miles from either.

The inside of the café is petite but neat, with plenty of cozy nooks. Pastel greens, yellows, teals and purplecolored walls create a welcoming feel.

Book shelves and trinkets add a homey ambiance.

Current owner Nicole Lindholm took over the business almost a decade ago, after falling in love with the café on family vacations. She’s since added her flair and hired a vibrant and fun staff, including her two kids (when they aren’t away at college).

Midway Café is waitress Miranda Barnett’s first serving job. Only a week into her new gig, Barnett already knows the local favorites.

Halfway to Paradise “A lot of people get the breakfast pita which comes with two eggs, salsa, onions, peppers, pepper jack cheese, and bacon, ham, or sausage,” said Barnett.

Other popular items include the breakfast burrito and egg and Brie sandwich. The restaurant prepares its dishes using organic ingredients and offers glutenfree options. It also bakes its own seven-grain wheat or white bread. The bakery is also the only place to find the original Manny & Isa Key Lime Pie. It’s also the first week on the job for barista Lily Healy.

“Everyone’s super friendly and it’s a really fun job and a happy place,” said Healy.

With two years of formal experience making coffee, Healy’s idea of the perfect cup is a hot latte with coconut cream and almond milk. Lattes seem to be the drink of choice at Midway, as Healy says she makes about 30 a day. The hardest beverage to make?

“Cappuccinos. It’s a little bit of a process with the frothing,” she said.

If you’re not into coffee, Barnett recommends a strawberry and banana smoothie or chilled glass of apple juice or orange juice to start the day.

Midway Café is located at MM 80 oceanside and is open from 7 a.m. to 3 pm. Monday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

wenty-two-year-old Ian WilsonNavarro’s future plans seemed simple enough. After graduating from Coral Shores High School, he decided to put off college for a little while. His idea was to give himself the freedom to find a passion potentially worth turning into a career pursuit.

Within a year or so, photography emerged as an interest and became a viable option. Then in the summer of 2016, Wilson-Navarro landed an opportunity interning for professional west coast surf photographer Mark McInnis.

“I feel extremely lucky. It’s taught me that, unfortunately, some don’t get to find a passion this early on, and because of that it feels like an obligation to give it my all,” said Wilson-Navarro.

Eventually, Wilson-Navarro’s internship would evolve into an assistant photographer position. In the

past year, Wilson-Navarro has traveled with McInnis to places like Costa Rica, Mexico, California, and Oregon.

His professional catalog has grown to include commercial fashion shoots for companies such as Body Glove and prAna. His equipment?

“I just recently switched to the Sony A7RII and love what that camera can do,” he said.

Wilson-Navarro stays busy with personal projects, and said his dream shoot would be working with consumer brands, creating either video or photos for eco-conservation awareness campaigns.

“Because of the changes I’ve seen here in my lifetime in the Keys, I’ve realized the impact of human pollution on places that I grew up loving,” said Wilson-Navarro. “I’d like to see (the local ecosystem) returned to a healthy state by transition to a plastic free area, and getting rid of single use plastics.”

Brewer creates beer from Irma rainwater, fallen fruits

N

eighbors must have thought Florida Keys Brewing Co.’s Brad Mullis was a little off when – in the middle of Hurricane Irma– he ran outside with buckets, staring into the sky like Chicken Little.

“They asked me what the hell I was doing,” laughed Mullis, who collected “three or four gallons” of rain water before darting back in.

He hadn’t gone completely crazy. In actuality, he was hard at work catching rainwater for his Hurricane Irma brew.

Mullis says the plan originated when Hurricane Matthew skimmed Florida. The crew at Florida Keys Brewing, ever the innovators, wanted to make a completely hurricane-supplied beer.

“We tried to trap rain water off a gutter to do it, but it was a bust,” said Mullis.

With Irma coming, the stars aligned for another shot at glory and Mullis capitalized.

Now on Saturday, Dec. 16, the brewery will be officially unveiling, and pouring, his latest creation.

Always the gentleman, Mullis invited the Weekly along for a secret tasting and shared the juicy details of what could be the rarest beer in the Keys.

Only 50 gallons of the limited brew will ever be in existence, in two versions. 45 gallons will be on tap during the release party. This version of the brew will be a flavorful Belgium Strong Ale. The rainwater used to brew this version came from the Beer Garden’s cistern and was filtered through charcoal.

45 gallons will be on tap during the release party on Dec. 16.

The remaining Irma Brew will be put into a five gallon firkin keg, and contains fruits Mullis collected after the storm. This version also contains the rainwater Mullis braved the storm to collect (PSA: don’t try this at home, kids.)

“The day after the storm I started to notice fruit on the ground from fallen trees. I grabbed what I could, and came home with a couple limes, a couple star fruit, and a handful of cherries,” said Mullis. “Later I wrote the recipe, learned what I had to do, and got the green light from Craig.”

Irma Brew contains 10.5 percent alcohol by volume, with banana, clove, and tropical notes as the dominant flavors first noticed, said Mullis.

“The name Irma has Germanic roots, so I wanted to brew a strong Germanic beer,” he said. “This beer is more symbolic than anything to me. I feel like it’s a part of our rebuilding as a brewery and community.

At the impromptu tasting, Key West bartender Alan Gold sampled an early version of the beer.

“The nose is a little deceptive, it smells a little like a sour, but tastes like it has tropical fruits in it. I’m a fan,” he said. “I definitely look forward to this being produced, even though it’s unfortunately not making its way to Key West.”

The Florida Keys Brewing Co., located at MM 82.5 oceanside, is preparing to move into a larger tap room in early 2018, and will be offering guides tours and tastings. Expect more funky ideas.

n Dec. 12, both the Key Largo and Upper Keys Rotary Clubs joined forces to hold the 5th annual Rotary holiday party at Marker 88 Restaurant. The organizations use the occasion to collect toys and cash donations for Kids in Special Situations every year. Hundreds of toys were collected at the event for KISS. The evening also saw the exchanging of vows between Susan Lane and retired Navy WWII pilot, Captain Dick Barnes, who met exactly one year ago at the very same event. Now married, the couple can boast that they met at Rotary, were engaged at Rotary, and tied the knot at Rotary. The maid of honor was Marlene Derfler, the best man was Barnes’ son, retired Navy Commander Dick Barnes Jr. The wedding cake was created by Gloria Teague of Bob’s Bunz.
