Since Hurricane Irma struck the Keys on Sept. 10, FEMA has provided $56.3 million in grants to Monroe County homeowners and renters for uninsured damage to their primary residence and serious losses related to the storm.

Additionally, the National Flood Insurance Program, which is part of FEMA, has paid more than $60 million in flood insurance claims for Monroe County policyholders, according to preliminary data.

arathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey told the council on Tuesday that the municipality’s costs associated with Hurricane Irma total $30 million.

“Over the last two years, the city had increased its reserve fund to about $5 million. And we were able to draw unused funds from other accounts amounting to about $10 million,” Lindsey said. “That’s about $15 million that doesn’t have to be borrowed.”

Lindsey asked the city council for direction about putting out a request for proposal from three local banks for a line of credit.

Lindsey said the city has yet to receive a FEMA reimbursement, although it has already submitted its first invoice with all the supporting documentation. He also said the state of Florida is supposed to “front” the federal FEMA disaster recovery funds to municipalities, and the state is then paid back out of the municipality’s share.

“That hasn’t happened,” Lindsey said.

When the city is reimbursed for its expenses, FEMA will cover 75 percent of the cost. The state and the city will split the other 25 percent. The city is also making use of special programs for further savings, including recycling the debris it collects.

The council said it would sign off on the revolving line of credit at a special call meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

At that meeting, the council will have the second hearing on a plan to clean the canals of Marathon. (See story, page 7.)

The other main topic for the night was affordable housing. Before the storm, the city was set to issue an RFP to construct affordable housing behind the city’s utility building on 104th Street. Number of units varied from about 10 to 30. After the storm, city staff has second thoughts.

“We want to be methodical and make good decisions, because after Hurricane Irma we are seeing the second- and third-order effects of everything we do,” said Lindsey.

“We are well aware of the competing needs for that site,” said Public Works Director Carlos Solis. He said keeping the lot available as open working space might suit the growing city’s needs better. During Hurricane Irma, the city staged much of its equipment there, as did local contractors who assisted in the city’s immediate cleanup of the airport and roads. Several council members also reiterated the

concern over available staging space should another hurricane strike; the three locations of trash piles in Marathon are all slated to be developed in the next two years, although the 104th Street site is too small to serve as trash pile for a storm of Irma’s magnitude.

“I support putting the RFP on hold,” said Councilman John Bartus.

“Private developers might be able to build affordable housing somewhere else in town before we can.”

The city had set aside 20 affordable housing building rights to build the 104th Street project.

Councilman Mark Senmartin had the most serious objections.

“At no time will I ever agree that we DON’T build units on that property.

We had the need, and it’s just gotten worse,” Senmartin said. “We spent the time and money to do the affordable housing studies. We sat here and wrote it together and came up with the guidelines to serve people the best. We should still put it out to RFP.” In the end, the council agreed to postpone issuing an RFP for six months.

In other news, the City of Marathon added a new feature to its BPAS system, or the method for awarding building rights in the Keys which are rationed out by the state of Florida.

Homeowners will now be allowed to donate funds for the approximate value of one acre of environmentally sensitive lands to earn extra scoring points. That value is set at $5,200 per acre. The funds will be deposited into the city’s affordable housing fund.

Marathon Deputy City Manager George Garrett said staff has reviewed all 133 canals in Marathon. Of those, there are 35 canals with “persistent” debris, debris that has sunk to the bottom or has not floated out on the tide. It’s estimated that about 10,000 cubic yards of trash will be removed from Marathon canals when the project is complete.

A

s the owner of Brutus Seafood in Marathon, Elise Mucha spends a lot of time at the popular Middle Keys restaurant. She’s sometimes the dishwasher, a server, a cook, and always way too busy for a real life, but never too busy for her friends.

Moving to the Keys, for unmentionable reasons, three years ago, she was drawn to the friendships she’d made while visiting the island. She needed to exit Orlando because she was acquiring “never-ending college credits.”

With a degree in marketing and advertising, almost another in psychology, and pre-med with a nursing background, she went into medical sales and bought a medical sales company two years later. Ready for a change, she joked that the next logical thing was to move to the Keys and buy a restaurant.

“I always remembered how much I enjoyed serving and bartending,” she said, having been in the service industry since she was 17 years old. “Note to self: owning one is nothing like working for one.”

With limited free time, she spends her days loving her rescue animals, so we asked her a few questions to get to know her a little better.

You stayed in Marathon for Hurricane Irma. What was the craziest thing that happened?

Seeing roofs flying across the canal, which was pretty alarming. I think the craziest is afterwards when you walk out after the storm and just see boats where cars are supposed to be and parts of homes in the water.

It was surreal.

Would you stay again? Absolutely.

As an animal lover, how many pets do you have? Get ready, you’ll need two pages … Jouet: my first cat was a rescue, and I got her because she was all white and she matched my comforter #basic; Veuve: he was on kitty cat death row, so they let me take him for free; John Snow: it was actually a kitten that was left behind after its owner died;

Fishermen’s Hospital to place modular facility at Marathon airport

aptist Health South Florida, the parent company of Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon, has yet to decide whether to completely rebuild or just renovate the badly damaged building in Marathon.

“We just don’t know yet,” said CEO Rick Freeburg.

What is needed is a temporary hospital, one built out of modular buildings not unlike the old Marathon City Hall, while the new building is completed. The modular hospital would be in place for two years, if not longer, and the mobile (tent) hospital on loan from the state of North Carolina would be sent back. On Wednesday, the Board of County Commissioners approved space for the modular hospital at the west end of the Marathon airport, a county property.

Monroe County Mayor David Rice said it’s an obvious choice. The only concern he has is over the length of the lease for Fishermen’s Hospital.

Right now, it’s written as a four-year lease with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The lease was drafted by airport officials, including Assistant Director of Airports Thomas “T.J.” Henderson. It also needs the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration.

“They will be looking at two things — the lease amount and the results of an air space study. The FAA has to be assured that the proposed construction won’t interfere with navigation in and around the airport,” Henderson said.

It’s reported Baptist wishes to secure a $1 a year lease on the property.

“This is about serving the community, not trying to make money because of the need for medical care in this community,” Henderson said. “Honestly, we don’t foresee a problem with either FAA requirement.”

On Tuesday, Freeberg said he doesn’t think the temporary hospital would be in place that long, more like two years.

“I think it will be a two-year period of rebuilding or renovating,” he said. He added that Baptist officials are still in the “design” phase of which modular configuration to order from the manufacturer. He said the buildings should be available 60 days after the decision is made, and installed within 30 days.

With the modular hospital would come more advanced medical care than what’s currently available in Marathon.

“We would have increased imaging capabilities, a better lab, and be able to treat more things than we can right now,” Freeberg said. “We might be able to do simple out-patient procedures like endoscopy or even appendectomies.”

Jay Hershoff, chairman of the board for Fishermen’s and Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, said the medical care must be relocated while reconstruction or renovation of the old facility is underway. (“It’s not logical to treat people in a parking lot while there are dump trucks and demolition and construction happening.”) In his opinion, he said, the hospital should be knocked down and rebuilt.

“The new Fishermen’s Hospital needs to be right-sized and we need to have the community get behind supporting the new facility philanthropically,” he said.

It’s even more challenging to design a new facility in the face of the changing healthcare landscape in the United States.

Hershoff estimates it costs about $1 million per bed to build a new hospital. Before it was damaged, Fishermen’s had 25 hospital beds.

In national news, the moves are even more dramatic. On Dec. 4, Aetna, one of the largest health insurers, and CVS, one of the biggest pharmacies, announced a merger valued at $69 billion.

On Dec. 10, two major hospital systems — Ascension and Providence St. Joseph Health — also announced a plan to merge to become the largest hospital system with 191 hospitals in 27 states; a deal valued at $41 billion.

“Even smart people are having a hard time imagining what is going to happen six months from now,” Hershoff said.

Fishermen’s Community Hospital was purchased by Baptist Health South Florida on July 1; a mere 71 days later, Hurricane Irma struck.

The hurricane changed the face of the Marathon airport, too. It became an “air bridge” for federal and state supplies, equipment and personnel.

The west end became a staging area for visiting linemen to repair electric service to Keys residents.

While those uses are coming to an end, the airport will now house the temporary modular hospital. Also, if the state legislature approves the funds, a new Emergency Operations Center will be constructed there. The Monroe County Sheriff is currently designing a 7,000-square-foot gun range to be constructed at the airport.

It also leases hangars to aviators and space to the City of Marathon for a wastewater treatment and land to the Disabled American Veterans club. The lease for the DAV will expire in June of 2020 when it will move to a month-tomonth lease.

air Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) was the only grassroots entity mentioned in the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s (OIR) order filed on Dec. 6. The order freezes rate increases for Monroe County Citizens Insurance policy holders.

“It is gratifying that OIR has taken the steps to look at the things we have been asking them to look at all these years,” said FIRM Advisory Board Member and Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers. “We have been asking them for 11 years to look at our surge versus wind damages and our stringent building codes. They finally listened.”

After considering testimony and documents from FIRM and comments received from residents of Monroe County, OIR Commissioner David Altmaier ordered homeowners’ windstorm rates for Monroe County to remain at current levels.

Over the last several years, rate increases have been around 10 percent every year. FIRM testified at the rate hearings that Citizens windstorm insurance rates are unjustifiably high for Monroe County, resulting in Monroe County premiums being more than $750 million higher than claims since 2004.

“After a storm like Irma, I am glad they didn’t add insult to injury,” she said.

Marathon homeowner Mary Stella said she is glad there is a freeze. “I already pay nearly $5,000 a year in premiums with a 2 percent deductible,” she said. But, her real qualm is more with the aftermath of Irma. “I take serious issue with

homeowners having to hire their own adjusters or otherwise do battle with Citizens to get fair settlement of our legitimate claims.”

FIRM President Mel Montagne said in a press release that the rate freeze is a big win for the residents of Monroe County, especially as so many are rebuilding after Hurricane Irma.

“We are so grateful for the support we receive from our state and local elected officials and the local governments and associations who continue to financially support our efforts, and especially to our members, who donate, volunteer, send comments and continue to fight alongside us,” he said. “There is more work to be done, as condo and mobile home rates will continue to rise, but this result is truly good news for us.”

FIRM is also awaiting the results of its lawsuit against the OIR concerning the 2017 rate increases. FIRM states that OIR wrongly denied Monroe County policy holders the right to present a case against unjustifiably high and unaffordable wind insurance rates. If FIRM is permitted to move its case forward, FIRM will show that the rate setting methodology utilized by Citizens and approved by OIR is flawed as it relates to Monroe County. FIRM’s attorneys presented oral arguments before the First Appellate Court in October.

FIRM is a grassroots organization that started in 2006 to fight for property owners’ rights in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. In addition to advocacy, the group keeps the community in the know with events like flood mitigation workshops. The next workshops take place Jan. 16 in Marathon, Jan. 17 in Key Largo, and Jan. 18 in Key West.

The group, which has 3,700 members and is free to join, has a monthly e-newsletter to keep members up-todate with flood and wind news. To join, visit firmkeys.org.

Ladies of San Pablo keep the spirit

T

he San Pablo Women’s Club met at Sweet Savannah’s on Monday night for a cookie exchange. The group, which is involved with several Catholic missions, and also collects lightly used eyewear, issues scholarships, and is responsible for the Christmas lights display in the prayer garden, said despite the church losing three buildings on the property due to Irma, the church is alive and well. The club, whose main fundraiser Christmas bazaar was canceled and the items collected given to families who lost items in the hurricane, is also involved with KAIR and feeding the homeless at Independence Cay. “We are a giggly bunch of women who love to sing and love to help the community,” said member Margie Casey at the event.

The club is open to anyone and meets on the second Monday of the month from October through April. Next month the women will be exchanging appetizers. The Prayer Garden light display brightened the church grounds last week and is also open to the community to see.

n the very early morning hours of Tuesday, Dec. 19 — like 2 a.m. — a historic landmark is making a historic move. The train car located on Knights Key, the former gift shop for the Pigeon Key Foundation, is moving up the road to Crane Point Museum.

“It will make Crane Point a more visible location as a tourist attraction in the city,” said Crane Point Board Chairman George Garrett, also the Marathon Deputy City Manager. “It represents some of the history that Crane Point is there to promote, and it serves to preserve a piece of history.”

While this particular train car did not run on the Florida Overseas Railroad, it was a part of the Florida East Coast Railway from about the same era. It does not fit into the design of the luxury resort being built on Knights Key, though it is being handled with meticulous care. The process has already started by creat-

ing a level surface in front of where the train car is now so that it can be loaded onto a dolly with a crane to be moved.

“My understanding is that it will be driven by remote control,” said Charlotte Quinn, director of Crane Point Museum. “It will take hours. But once it gets to Crane Point, I want to drive it!”

Quinn said there is already a grant in place to build bathrooms behind the

train car. Her next step, she said, will be securing grants to build a train station and platform to augment the train car’s presence.

“Crane Point is the original location of the train station in Marathon,” she said.

The movement of the train car to the front of the Crane Point Museum will displace the Incredible Fruit Stand, a Saturday pop-up serving the Marathon community for 17 years. (And the seasonal Christmas Lobster Trap Tree must be removed for the train car and crew to have room to maneuver.)

The management of Crane Point said it offered Marie and Peter Pittman a long-term, open-ended lease on the highway right-of-way on the west end near the Marathon Garden Club.

Peter Pittman did not return calls seeking comment.

Crane Point Museum leases the U.S.1 right-of-way from the city. The land was purchased from FDOT by the Monroe County Land Authority for $125,000 and it transferred the property to the City of Marathon.

“That’s about $2 per square foot,” said Garrett. “That’s a good deal.”

Crane Point Museum was projected to receive 35,000 visitors this year, but the storm forced the facility to close for two months.

Other items donated from the Knights Key location include a 1910 rail plate, a replica of a 405-pound grouper and a 9-foot ocean sunfish replica.

MORE BIKES ON THE WAY For families with small children living aboard boats in Boot Key Harbor, bicycles are a lifeline to landlocked community doings. Every year the Marathon City Marina staff donates its time and efforts to raise money in order to give free bicycles to the harbor kids, usually around three dozen, and was on track to do the same in 2017. “After Hurricane Irma, it’s more important than ever. A lot of kids left their bikes in the rack and they were rusted after the storm,” said Marina Manager Sean Cannon. Cannon said he wants to raise enough money to be able to give out about 30 bikes. “Yes, four days out of a planned two-and-a-half-week trip.

We spent the entire time watching it on social media,” Lisa said.

The Hogans were, literally, the second clients through the doors at Keys Contracting Services in Marathon as soon as it reopened after Hurricane Irma; and the Hogans sing the construction firm’s praises.

lorida Keys Aquarium Encounters will reopen to the public on Friday, Dec. 15. With almost all the Hurricane Irma damages repaired, the only thing lacking is excited visitors to once again enjoy all the Florida Keys waters have to offer … while standing on firm ground.

“Most of the damage was vegetative,” said the aquarium’s Ben Daughtry. And while that sounds mild, consider that the aquarium’s footprint is largely out of doors. For example, a bank of mangroves was washed into the lagoon and the seawall had to be rebuilt. Aquarium staff also took the opportunity to freshen everything.

“It’s been three years since we opened and we’ve been operating 365 days a year,” Daughtry said. “We painted, we powerwashed.”

It also added new features like another touch tank and a nearby aquarium devoted to seahorses. (No, you can’t TOUCH the seahorses, Jason.)

During the storm, a small crew of helpers from the aquarium and the sister business, Dynasty Marine, stayed and tended to the animals.

“We were there at noon before the storm, and at noon after,” Daughtry said, adding that no animals were lost.

“We will be adding some more creatures early next week.”

The hardest job, Daughtry said, was to clear the U-shaped canal that opens onto Vaca Cut. It was packed with debris, seaweed and sludge. Staff has been removing the bits and pieces and the project is more than halfway complete.

••• One of the most heartening, and visible, signs of resurrection in the Middle Keys is the rebuilding of Stout’s Restaurant in the Middle Keys. Travelers on U.S.1 couldn’t help but keep track of the progress of the eatery’s reconstruction, post-Irma. Every day, it looks a little better.

“We hope to be open at the beginning of next month, in early January,” said Jody Hogan, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Lisa.

“We set a goal, for the first of the new year,” she said.

“This is a generational place,” said Jody, who was raised in the Keys. “I came here with my dad. The moms used to buy the Friday lunch here when San Pablo Catholic Church ran a little school for elementary students.”

Electric cooperative celebrates the holidays

T

he Florida Keys Electric Cooperative carried out its yearslong tradition on Dec. 8 with the ceremonial throwing of the “switch.” Marathon Mayor Michelle Coldiron and the children were responsible for moving the plate’s switch from “off” to “on,” much to the delight of the crowds. Soon after, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived. The festivities also included a “snow” machine, free hamburgers and hotdogs, popcorn, soda and water. The kids played in a variety of little houses set up for their enjoyment.

SOUTH OF BROAD AND OTHER LOWCOUNTRY MEMORIES The Holy City of Charleston is one of America’s great cities

P

art of the time we spent in Irmageddon exile from my beloved islands was spent in America’s Holy City — Charleston, South Carolina. Significant chunks of my younger days were spent in and around Charleston and the Carolina Lowcountry, and walking the streets South of Broad and near the Battery helped (if only briefly) to keep my mind off of the new reality we all now face here.

I was fortunate enough to spend a summer at the College of Charleston at the Governor’s School of South Carolina all the way back in 1978. I fell in love with Charleston that summer, even through the stifling humidity and the often foul odors of North Charleston paper mills and the pluff mud of nearby swamps. The college is situated in a collection of old buildings on the peninsula, in the heart of one of our most important historic and cultural city centers.

One year earlier, I played one of my first true professional music gigs at a convention at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston. Coincidentally, it was the week Elvis Presley died. And back when I was on the road in the early 1980s, I played a few times in Edisto Beach, a barrier island resort community south of Charleston. There was special beauty and an air of mystery in the South Carolina Lowcountry then, especially when driving at night through the marshes and old Spanish moss-covered trees lining the dark two-lane roads.

While progress definitely came to many parts of the Charleston area, the peninsular center of the Holy City still hangs onto the same feeling and ambience I first discovered in the 1970s.

Any damage from Hurricane Hugo in 1989 has long been repaired and forgotten. But Hugo was not the first disaster Charleston survived.

Charleston was bombed mercilessly and blockaded for years during the Civil War. In 1886, Charleston was nearly destroyed by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that was felt as far away as Boston and Cuba. The South Carolina Legislature adopted a state constitution in 1895 that disenfranchised Charleston’s black population for more than six decades. Still, through these disasters and decades of a languishing economy, Charleston survived. It survived earthquakes, integration and a major hurricane while holding onto its coastal charm. And it’s like no other

place on Earth, Savannah notwithstanding.

There are no tall buildings or skyscrapers on the peninsula; church spires are the defining structures of the skyline. Charleston’s Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul is today the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. In 1820, Charleston was established as the see city of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston that covers the entire state. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is the fourth-oldest Jewish congregation in the continental United States and played an important role in the development of Reform Judaism. And Brith Sholom Beth Israel is the oldest Orthodox synagogue in the South.

Charleston is the Southern center for arts, culture, music and theater.

There are museums, festivals, and performance venues galore. There are unique accents and dialects, from the rich aristocratic old Charleston (“Chahlston”) speech, to the Gullah language spoken by African Americans who are a disappearing population (and language) on the nearby sea islands.

And the cuisine is amazing, featuring that wonderful Lowcountry seafood and traditional Southern recipes (or, “Charleston Receipts”). If there is a banquet in heaven, the first course would have to be Charleston She-Crab Soup. Nobody else outside the Lowcountry ever got it right.

BAYGRASS LAUNCHES SEASON

CE’s first major event of its new season is the sixth annual BayGrass bluegrass music fest on Jan. 12, 13, and 14. Also featured this season is the 24th annual Bay Jam music fest, and individual performers and bands, including rising star Grace Pettis and the Sultans of String band.

“ICE will have stronger focus on community philanthropy and support for the local arts scene,” said David Feder, director of ICE. “New programs and established activities that work with local schools to promote art, music and dance will be central in those efforts.”

2018 will be the third year of ICE’s Drumming Workshop for special needs students at local schools, with professional drummers instructing students. And ICE will continue to provide local students with grants to advance their artistic and musical aspirations. More than $400,000 has been donated since 1998.

“Another example is our BayGrass and Craft Beer Festival partnering with the Everglades Science Center to showcase organizations working on Florida Bay research and Everglades restoration,” said Feder.

In early December, ICE sponsored an On Your Toes dance studio performance at the Islamorada Holiday Festival.

More events may be scheduled.

ICE is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting quality entertainment and supporting cultural events in the Upper Keys. Proceeds from its events provide music, dance, and arts scholarships, grants to school programs, and infrastructure to local not-for-profit events and organizations.

wenty-two-year-old Ian WilsonNavarro’s future plans seemed simple enough. After graduating from Coral Shores High School, he decided to put off college for a little while. His idea was to give himself the freedom to find a passion potentially worth turning into a career pursuit.

Within a year or so, photography emerged as an interest and became a viable option. Then in the summer of 2016, Wilson-Navarro landed an opportunity interning for professional west coast surf photographer Mark McInnis.

“I feel extremely lucky. It’s taught me that, unfortunately, some don’t get to find a passion this early on, and because of that it feels like an obligation to give it my all,” said Wilson-Navarro.

Eventually, Wilson-Navarro’s internship would evolve into an assistant photographer position. In the

“I just recently switched to the Sony A7RII and love what that camera can do,” he said.

Wilson-Navarro stays busy with personal projects, and said his dream shoot would be working with consumer brands, creating either video or photos for eco-conservation awareness campaigns.

“Because of the changes I’ve seen here in my lifetime in the Keys, I’ve realized the impact of human pollution on places that I grew up loving,” said Wilson-Navarro. “I’d like to see (the local ecosystem) returned to a healthy state by transition to a plastic free area, and getting rid of single use plastics.”

KEY WEST’S MAIN STREET Book reviews Duval’s history LAURA ALBRITTON

ore than 180 years ago, Duval Street could not claim to be Old Town’s central avenue. That honor went to another road, located west of Duval, which the 500 or so Key West residents at the time referred to as “Main Street.”

In 1829, William Whitehead completed his famous survey of this island outpost, and changed the name Main Street to Whitehead Street. It was just as well.

Duval Street, christened in honor of Florida’s then-territorial governor, was destined to become Key West’s de facto main street for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. These are the kind of intriguing details that I stumbled across as Keys historian Jerry Wilkinson and I were writing our new book, “Key West’s Duval Street.”

During the early years, a tidal pool covered a section of Duval; then, in 1846, a hurricane blew over the island and altered its topography. Eventually, with the underwater sections now filled in, Duval Street could stretch from “the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico,” and in the process, become one of the liveliest, most renowned streets in America.

People showed up on Duval Street to imbibe spirits, to celebrate, and to congregate. One of the island’s first saloons, the Gem, was opened on Duval, and set the tone for decades to come. People also began to turn up for parades: in 1880, Civil War hero and former presi-

dent Ulysses S. Grant rode down Duval in a horse-drawn carriage. Even former Confederate sympathizers came out to see the great man. Later, in 1892, Cuban revolutionary and poet Jose Marti would give an electrifying speech from a Duval balcony. One of Key West’s first hotels, the Russell House, hosted visitors here and even witnessed one of the island’s most notorious duels.

When the 20th century dawned, Duval Street could boast jewelry stores, coffee shops, a shooting gallery, multiple bars, and a barber. Parades regularly bustled up and down Duval Street, with soldiers, sailors and benevolent societies such as the Knights of Pythias joining in. When an elderly Henry Flagler at last arrived on his Overseas Railroad in 1912, militias and bands proudly marched along this avenue, with crowds eager to witness a slice of history.

More history trumpeted down Duval in World War I and World War II, with plenty of patriotic parades. In the days of segregation, African-American children from Frederick Douglass High School proudly twirled batons and played their instruments along Duval on Armed Forces Day. Meanwhile, Key Westers still came to Duval to shop for their children’s clothes and buy household appliances.

People made their homes on Duval Street; they set up decorations for Christmas. Ordinary life took place just blocks away from bars and nightclubs. The street saw births, deaths, baptisms, graduations, artistic endeavors, local politicking, preparations for war and celebrations of peace. Yet the street could never be just another humdrum avenue. With its irrepressible spirit, Duval Street was, and remains, the pulsing heart of historic Key West, and a much-loved American destination.

merican Book Fest has announced the winners and finalists of The 2017 Best Book Awards. More than 400 winners and finalists were announced in more than 90 categories. Awards were presented for titles published in 20152017.

Karuna Eberl and Steve Alberts, authors of “Key West & the Lower Keys Travel Guide,” received the top nod in the travel category.

Their book was also a finalist for inside design.

“After two years of diligent research and a real effort to make the book informative and entertaining, we are pretty thrilled to win a national award,” said Eberl. “That’s an un-

usual achievement for a travel guide.”

She said the book has garnered some nice reviews.

“People say they are reading it like a novel, from cover to cover,” she said.

The awards, now in the 15th year, represent a mix of about 2,000 books from a wide array of publishers throughout the U.S. The Keys authors are currently at work on another book about the Everglades, targeted towards young readers. It will be published by Cardinal Publishing in 2018. “Key West & the Lower Keys Travel Guide” is for sale on amazon.com and also local shops.

ver the course of last week, three bike rides in Key West, Marathon, and Key Largo raised money and much needed gifts for 5,000 local kids who will be bright-eyed Christmas morning with gifts under the tree. The organizers of the Tarponian Tournament in Marathon recently awarded $30,000 to charter captains in the Florida Keys. David Breznicky, tournament director, spurred the anglers to action after Hurricane Irma and collected $30,000 from 27 people. Guides who have fished clients in the 15-year-old annual tournament received up to $1,500 each. Breznicky said he hopes to raise another $30,000 for the professionals who are struggling during the Keys’ tourism wobble. FOUNDATION DISTRIBUTES IRMA RELIEF GRANTS The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) recently distributed $90,000 to eight nonprofit organizations in the Upper Keys for relief efforts following Hurricane Irma.

In total, CFFK has provided nearly $620,000 from the Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund and the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund for the Upper Keys to support muchneeded relief for individuals from Key West to Key Largo.

These most recent grants support organizations in the Upper Keys and provide direct assistance to children, families, teachers and others for housing, food, clothing,

medical care, counseling and more. The grants are funded by the Landau fund.

Grants were presented in Key West, Marathon and Islamorada over the past several weeks. A complete list of grants is available at cffk.org.

Contributions to the Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund are still needed. CFFK is distributing 100 percent of the funds raised. Donations may be made online at cffk.org or by calling 305-292-1502. All donations are tax deductible. —CONTRIBUTED
