arlier this year, the Village of Islamorada contracted with South Florida transportation engineers Kittelson & Associates Inc. to help identify, and potentially solve, some of its parking issues.

Islamorada’s request paid particular attention to modifying its Land Development Regulations as they pertain to parking, and to seeking possible combined transportation alternatives.

Using a listen-first approach, the village and Kittelson & Associates Inc., began gathering data and talking to residents, while also looking at existing traffic conditions and the context of its use. On Dec. 6-7, the parking study team (made up of the village, Kittelson & Associates and PlanActive Studio, LLC) conducted an open house at the Founders Park community room to gauge public input.

“Everything starts with a plan. This is going to focus the needs of the community in the area and assist in the overall traffic,” said former mayor Ken Philipson.

“I think the council is to be commended for going forward with crafting a master plan for the overall parking problem that exist in Islamorada,” said another former mayor, Ted Blackburn. “It will help to stir business and help in alleviating the problem of traffic.”

“We met with business owners, village council, staff, the chamber, and a handful of other residents and we’ve received some good feedback from our website survey on islamoradaparking.com,” said Kittelson senior planner JP Weesner.

According to Weesner, feedback has identified three areas needing parking solutions: the area around the Morada Way Arts District, Founders Park, and North Plantation Key near and including Casa Mar Village.

These areas were identified largely because of the high volume of traffic some local events create there.

“In Islamorada, we have heard that growing events like the Third Thursdays in the Arts District or larger events at Founders Park create momentary strain on land and parking resources,” said Weesner.

slamorada Dive Center Owner Eric Billips has become one of the de facto experts in the nation when it comes to the eradication of lionfish over the past 10 years.

“I’ve been here in the Keys on ground zero since they got here, and have been taking care of them ever since,” he said.

Back in 2008, Billips reportedly became the second person in the Keys to harvest a lionfish.

At one point he held the record for the largest lionfish harvested (speared at Alligator Reef). Billips and REEF’S Lad Akins have also starred in a documentary – about lionfish. In the film, Akins provided the science expertise while Billips discussed hunting the pesky fish.

Nowadays, he’s supplying restaurants through the Keys and the nation with fresh lionfish.

Word travels fast in the world of invasive fish species, apparently, and it wasn’t long before Billips’ expertise caught the attention of a producer for the cooking show “The F Word,” starring renowned hot-head and Michelin star chef Gordon Ramsay.

Ramsay was going to be in Miami for a Cuban food event. One of his producers, knowing he was a diver in the United Kingdom, thought of a spear fishing segment for the new show. So they reached out to Billips.

“Gordon ate up the lionfish idea – he’s a scuba diver, and it’s an invasive species, so he was all about it,” said Billips.

The segment was filmed in March and aired in June. In the segment, Billips and his fiancee, Grace Langs, accompany Ramsay to spear lionfish off of Islamorada.

After catching several, Ramsay and the couple returned dockside to enjoy Ramsay’s Caribbean fish curry.

On the way back to shore, however, another idea for a segment was born. While chatting with Ramsay about invasive species in south Florida, Billips mentioned the influx in the number of Burmese pythons in the Everglades and how he and his neighbor sometimes go out snake hunting.

“At the end of the day the producer comes over and mentions my python idea I pitched to Gordon. A little times goes by and he shoots me an email saying that Gordon wouldn’t stop talking about the python thing, and that he wants to do another segment,” said Billips.

No expert on snake hunting, Billips and his neighbor, Jason Catarineau, spent the next month practicing.

“We went out three times a week at night to the trails along the Everglades to hunt pythons to get prepared for the segment,” he said.

“It got to the point where we had caught a couple, so then we brought in Kyle Penniston to help hunt.”

Both Catarineau and Penniston would star as the episode’s “resident experts” on pythons. Penniston is part of South Florida Water Management District’s Python Elimination Program and knows the area well.

“We did a little wading into the water looking to see if we could find anything down there, but we needed Kyle to go down by the levies,” said Catarineau. “The best part about the experience was how cool Gordon and his son were. They are great people and a lot of fun to be around.”

Billips and Catarineau’s families would later be invited to Los Angeles to attend the live filming of an episode. As they were leaving, Billips again discussed a future episode, based on feeding hammerhead and harvesting conchs, with one of the producers after suggesting the idea to Gordon.

“Gordon’s exact words were, ‘You’re f***** nuts,’” laughed Billips.

“But as he’s walking away, he looks over his shoulder, and says, ‘Let’s do it.’”

The Summer of Gordon may never end.

t may be one of the newest bike rides taking place in the Middle and Upper Keys, but the Holiday Helpers bike rides aren’t just for fun.

The rides are an easy way to help local parents pick out gifts for their children during the holidays. About 5,000 local kids were given gifts last year.

The bike rides are free with an unwrapped gift for a child, although, in lieu of bringing an unwrapped present, a small donation can be made.

“These rides are crucial, and are fun ways, to get toys to children of our community,” said Jeremy Wilkerson of Wesley House Family Services. “With the devastating hurricane, the need is going to be multiplied. Your help is needed to make sure every child has a present to open for Christmas.”

The Holiday Helper stores will be open in Key West on Saturday, Dec. 16, in Marathon on Monday, Dec. 18, and in Key Largo on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 20-21. Families – suggested by partnering organizations, teachers, community members, and friends – shop at the free store.

“That’s what makes the Holiday Helpers program special; presents are not just given to the parents for their children. The parents get to shop for free in the store and pick out the presents their children would like,” said Wilkerson.

The store is a collaboration among the Wesley House, Salvation Army, Key West Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Healthy Start Coalition, and The Early Learning Coalition.

“By having multiple agencies involved, we are not duplicating services, and trying to make sure every child in need is reached,” he said.

Light Your Bike!

Jeanine Christiansen of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce helped coordinate the Marathon bike event.

“The ride was really fun last year,” she said of seeing the bikes decorated along with the houses on the route. “I think this year will be even better going behind the airport.”

Behind the airport homeowner Bambi Kuck saw information on Facebook about the ride. Although she and many of her neighbors lost a lot of Christmas decorations in the storm, they are still looking forward to showing how the community is rebuilding.

“There are a lot of people decorated in the neighborhood,” she said, as her husband has been hanging their new Amazon Prime decorations in the eve-

nings. “Not everyone will be lit up this year, but anyone who can will be.”

The Marathon Lighted Bike Ride takes off from Marathon airport on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. Check-in starts at 6 p.m. with Santa, and helmet fittings at 6:30 p.m. The ride will last about an hour. Many people have said they will be watching the Key Colony Beach Lighted Boat Parade at dusk and then heading over for the ride. Riders can pre-register at wesleyhouse.org.

Key Largo Lighted Bike Ride is Saturday, Dec. 9; it starts at Key Largo Fisheries at 6:30 p.m. and will tour the neighborhood around YMCA Park.

Check in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the Key Largo Fisheries will be doing a tree lighting after the ride.

The Key West Lighted Bike Parade took place on Wednesday. About 500 riders show up yearly to the Key West event, which takes place from Bayview Park through Duval Street.

ILLUSTRATED FAMILY Local father-son duo thrust body-art into fine arts conversation GABRIEL SANCHEZ

ey Largo resident Robert Greene got his first tattoo in July 2013. The red, white and blue symbol originated from a Japanese anime called “Naruto,” but compared to the massive collection of ink covering his body, Greene’s first “piece” is quite simple.

“If I could go back in time, instead of just getting the symbol, I would have just gotten the character. That’s how you evolve,” said Greene.

His assortment of tats includes fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Muhammad Ali and both Klitschko brothers; famous stars like the Weeknd; figures from Japanese anime, “Game of Thrones” and European history; Vikings battling knights; a couple of World War II planes; marine life; and a space leaf – to name a few.

Most were done by Key Largo’s South of Heaven Tattoo father-son duo, Brandon and Anthony Bennett.

At a young age, shop owner Brandon Bennett showed passion for art. Constantly coloring and drawing, Brandon created storyboards for his Atari video games, and by his high school years, found interest in graffiti art and later painting. With no formal art training, other than four years of art class in school, most of his ability is raw talent.

After the untimely passing of a sibling, Brandon contemplated life and his purpose.

“I knew I wanted to tattoo and do something with my art. I had a few buddies who were tattooing that took me under their wing, and I hit the ground running,” said Brandon. “My parents owned a leather apparel store in Chicago, so I started tattooing out of there, until we went down to Miami, and eventually opened our current shop here in 2009.”

At the time the shop opened, Brandon’s son, Anthony, was only a freshman. But by his senior year, Anthony began apprenticing for his father, and quickly realized tattooing was his future, especially with his ability to create photo-realistic pieces.

“I never knew I could do it; I started drawing while I was apprenticing and it came naturally,” said Anthony. “To me the realism is easier than some of the other things people would expect, but at the end of the day you have to do anything that comes through, and do it well.”

On this day, Anthony is adding “Game of Thrones” antagonist, the Night King, to Greene’s chest. One of the first tattoos Anthony did was a crab on Greene’s knee.

Compared to the Night King piece, four years’ time reveals a substantial evolution in his ability.

“You should listen to them. You are going to bring in a picture and they may suggest altering it a little,” said Greene of artist recommendations. “They have way more experience and if you have no tattoos, you’re not going to know what looks good. They do.”

Dumping debris on any roadway will be enforced as a felony.

Residents must make individual arrangements for the removal of materials not collected during hurricane debris removal. A SIP OF SUBLIME Florida Keys Coffee has something special brewing for Keys residents

B

obby Wallace considered himself somewhat a coffee buff because of his daily routine of grinding and brewing. Then he got into the business of great coffee.

An engineering graduate from DeVry, Wallace fell in love with the Keys after previously visiting on a whim, renting a convertible, and driving to Key West.

No stranger to start-ups, Wallace has owned and operated a number of national businesses since 2009. After he sold his most recent company, a fertilizer business, in 2015, he finally relocated.

“I’m a fourth-generation entrepreneur,” he said. “I enjoy building a system and distribution channels for a finished product. That’s fun for me,” said Wallace. “In my office right now, I have about 10 cases of coffee stacked inside.

It can be a challenge working from home, so it takes a bit of discipline.”

For this new business, Wallace said the goal is to have a working facility in the Keys roasting and distributing coffee daily. Even without a physical location, Florida Keys Coffee’s high-end Peruvian medium roast is still receiving rave reviews.

“Super smooth and great taste,” said Phil Rogers. “Just started my second bag of Florida Keys Coffee. I’m really impressed; a solid first batch.”

Mariners Hospital CEO Rick Freeburg said, ““I loved this new Keys coffee, dark and strong, but not too strong or bitter. I went through the first bag in less than a week; couldn’t stop having a cup.”

The organic gourmet beans are grown by a Peruvian co-op in the Incahuasi Valley region, where, according to Wallace, the high altitude develops a natural sweetness and complexity. Per the South American co-op’s recommendation, Florida Keys Coffee also brought on the expertise of artisan roaster Josef Rousek.

The company is currently looking at introducing a Sumatran blend in 2018.

Sumatra, an Island off Indonesia, is home to some of the most flavorful coffee in the world, according to Wallace.

In this coming year, Florida Keys Coffee will start producing five-pound bags for commercial use, plans to launch a national campaign, and will introduce K-cups as well.

Florida Keys Coffee can be found locally at the Trading Post in Islamorada. Coffee and apparel are also available online at flkeyscoffee.com. The online shop offers Monroe County residents a 10 percent discount. Whole bean, 12-ounce bags are $15.50; ground coffee is $16. Look for Florida Keys Coffee at Christmas in Key Largo on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Key Largo Fisheries.

Snowfall reaches Founders

T

he beach at Founders Park had a slightly different look on Dec. 1. The annual Islamorada Holiday Festival had made its return, and it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Kids of all ages took to the large mound of snow to slide down and hurl snowballs. Swaths of vendors lined the shore and sand, selling everything from holiday trinkets to seasonal sweets. After the enormous tree lit up, On Your Toes dance studio hit the stage to entertain the hundreds in attendance. To wrap the evening, this year’s gold and silver themed parade filed through Founders Park while a fleet of more than 30 vehicles and hundreds of supporters showed their spirit.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I am a part of the Interact Club, and I am also a part of lacrosse. Interact is important to me because it is a way to get back into the community to do community service and help people that help me so much.

Lacrosse is a big part of my life because I spend hours a day at the school playing and making myself better.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? The class that has prepared me the most for life after high school is leadership class because we prepare for events and run a lot of school functions. By doing this we learn problem-solving and get a better understanding of how to talk to people and deal with other problems.

It also gives us the view from a management perspective and will help us manage ourselves and others better in the future.

What advice would you give underclassmen? My best advice for underclassmen would be to make friends with your teachers.

Know your goals, and if it comes down to a good night or a finished goal, finish your goal instead of going out. Also, when you find an extracurricular activity that you enjoy, go for it with everything you have.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I want to be remembered as a guy that puts his head down and does what he must.

I believe that a true leader leads by example, not by telling others what to do.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? I would place a lacrosse stick inside for my love of lacrosse, a spear for spearfishing, a picture of my family, and a pen. That is my life in four items.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I want to finish college. I want to get a good well-off job. And finally, I want to make a happy life for myself.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I do not think so. First, because the living cost down here is very high. Also, outside of fishing and tourism, there is no opportunity down here.

Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me … That I am very lucky to be able to go on the boat and have a low crime rate and to have what I have.
