DUMPING ARRESTS BEGIN Sheriff, county, municipalities issue stern warnings SARA MATTHIS

n Dec. 2, two men from Key Largo were arrested, charged with dumping a large amount of debris beside the highway on Grassy Key. The pile of dumped debris measured 40 feet long by 12 feet wide by 8 feet high and exceeded the felony amount of 500 pounds.

“If we see anybody dumping, anywhere, along U.S.1 right-of-way we are going to take action,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay last week.

He said that could be anything from a warning to a notice to appear to even an arrest. The charge could be a misdemeanor or even a felony, if it involves big trucks and equipment.

“Frankly, it’s unsafe for motorists.

There are huge pieces of debris and boulders just feet away from the roadway,” Ramsay said. “And having big trucks stopped on the highway to load or unload debris is also unsafe.”

Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey issued a similar warning: “Anyone caught discarding or disposing of debris as of Nov. 28 in any right of way within the City limits of Marathon or along U.S.1 will be prosecuted.” Lindsey said city code enforcement officers will also be on the lookout.

Several areas of the Keys have completed debris removal on city and county roads — Key West, Stock Island to Baypoint, Marathon, Islamorada, Key Largo and Tavernier.

The announcement comes on the heels of news that the state Department of Transportation has started one more pass along U.S.1. The agency’s contractors stopped picking up hurricane debris along U.S.1 at the end of October, according to Monroe County. They began again on Dec. 6 and have been told to complete the task by Jan. 16.

According to contractor MCM’s Eddie Martinez, the plan is to start the debris collection along U.S.1 on Big Pine Key, with crews working out in both directions.

The collection will start with 25 to 50 trucks, with the possibility of bringing in more trucks to meet the Jan. 16 deadline.

MCM will be collecting the debris that already is along U.S. 1 in the Keys. As above, anyone who puts more debris out on U.S.1 will be prosecuted.

State Rep. Holly Raschein, who represents the Keys in Tallahassee, is credited with facilitating the contractors’ return.

“The governor has said we are open for business, and we are, but we need more help. The state is the perfect partner, and has been,” she said. “I am grateful that (Transportation) Secretary Mike Dew and his staff decided to revisit their decision.”

The warnings about dumping are explicit and direct.

“It’s been 80 days,” said Ramsay. “Everyone has had enough time to get their trash to the street and that includes snowbirds. If they haven’t been down yet to check on, or clean, their properties, that’s not everybody else’s problem. We need to clean up the Keys.”

County residents can still bring hurricane debris to any of the County’s three transfer stations for free disposal. And residents in the hardest hit area — from MM 16-40 — can still put debris out at the curb on county roads only.

Conch Key, Duck Key and Layton are awaiting the final pass.

Also, the air curtain burning of vegetative debris by FDOT’s contractor on Cudjoe Key has ended.

Residents who spot illegal dumping are encouraged to call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 305-289-2430 or 305-289-2351.

John Cadwell III John J Cadwell III, 51, of Big Pine Key, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday Nov. 30, 2017 where he was surrounded by loved ones in their home.

He was born on March 19, 1966 in Charleston, South Carolina but had resided in the Keys since the age of 17.

John ran a successful landscaping company that served the Florida Keys to Cutler Bay. He was an avid boater and could be found flying high on his Action Marine on a clear calm day. He worked as hard as he played.

But his real passion was for God and his family. A dedicated Christian and good Samaritan, he could often be seen helping someone on the side of the road, with a meal or warm clothing. He had compassion for others and there wasn’t a person who wasn’t impacted by his friendly smile and good nature.

His greatest accomplishments in this life were his children and love for his family. John was a devoted husband, father and son. Surviving are his parents, John and Carolyn Cadwell of Big Pine Key; love of his life, wife Lissete Cadwell of Big Pine Key; sons John J. Cadwell (Ashley Adamo) of Marathon, Paul O. Cadwell (Anna Mikhailova) of Big Pine Key; daughter Stephanie R. Cadwell (T.J. Daniels) of Cudjoe Key; stepson Brittain Brabham of Big Pine Key; brother/sister in law Jason and Jennifer Cadwell and his nephew Jason Cadwell; and his adoring grandchildren, Matthew John Cadwell, and Sage Brabham.

John was a healthy and active individual often working late into the night. There wasn’t anything that he could not fix or a boat he could not spray, or a motor he couldn’t repair.

He was diagnosed four years ago with Stage IV non small cell lung cancer and, NO, he was not a smoker. Most individuals with this type of lung cancer are nonsmokers and often do not get diagnosed until the final stage of their disease. Allergy or cold-like symptoms often occur in the early stages, which do not merit the need for an X-ray, so many people do not get one until they start experiencing difficulty breathing and pressure in their chest. Our family hopes that light can be shed on this disease and awareness be raised.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 16, 2017 at the Keys Vineyard Community Church in Big Pine Key. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to: The Lung Cancer Research Foundation, www.lungcancerresearchfoundation.org.

verybody has seen the white van with red lettering rolling up and down Overseas Highway. Here’s the thing — there’s about a dozen of them.

The Keys Shuttle vehicles are moving constantly, running locals and visitors to or from their flights at MIA and FLL airports.

Owner Raul Cisneros and his wife, Ana, moved to the Middle Keys 21 years ago. His first investment? He bought the Action Taxi company.

“At the time, the Marathon airport still had commercial flights. But then they started canceling them. The passengers were asking for rides to the mainland airports and we accommodated them,” Cisneros said. When the commercial airlines pulled out altogether, the course was clear: start Keys Shuttle. “That was a big day,” he said.

The business came to a complete standstill after Hurricane Irma. But, last week, Cisneros said the vans are running almost at full speed.

Full name? Raul Cisneros When was Keys Shuttle created?

2000.

In the beginning, did you drive?

For two and a half years I drove. I put 360,000 miles on one vehicle during that time. I still drive during season.

Cisneros drives on with Keys Shuttle What’s your dream car? Well, a Ferrari of course. But I like the 2018 midengine Corvette that’s coming out.

Your son graduated Island Christian School with a lot of swimming medals. As a teenager, what kind of athletic skills did you have? I did judo.

Where have you lived? Well, I was born in Texas and I split my time on the Gulf of Mexico between Mexico and the U.S. (My dad was an engineer with the oil companies and we moved every three or four years.) I met my wife in Mexico. And before Keys Shuttle, I owned part of an insulation factory and also worked in the airline cargo industry in Miami.

What’s your guilty pleasure? I eat too much! Especially Mexican food.

But I will try anything once.

If you didn’t do this, what would you do? I would own a dive shop. I love diving and I love to spearfish.

How many vans? During high season, about 13 vehicles.

Where’s your favorite place to dive in the Keys? The Spiegel Grove.

What was it like after Hurricane Irma? It was like starting over from scratch. Plus when we could get passengers, we had to worry about curfew.

What’s your favorite TV show? Well, we cut out Comcast to economize after Hurricane Irma …

Is it a 24-7 operation? Yes. Any hobbies? Well, I used to drive autocross or go carts. I still like to drive fast, but NOT when I have passengers.

Any places to visit on your bucket list? I still have two of the Seven Wonders of the World to see — Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil and Machu Picchu in Peru.

Have you given any thought to retirement? Well, I’m in the process of changing my mind about that. I used to think that I wanted to move to Cozumel to do drift driving. But now I want to move closer to Yucatan to do the cenotes (ancient, sacred sinkholes) diving.

BOAT PARADES DAZZLE IN THE KEYS Four events happen this weekend

I

f you want to see boats lit up like Christmas trees, this weekend is your weekend. From Key Largo to Key West, four lighted boat parades are scheduled for Friday through Sunday.

Fair warning, though: You can probably only get to three of them.

STOCK ISLAND The inaugural Stock Island Lighted Boat Parade will take place Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., with pre-parade activities starting at 6 p.m. from Stock Island Marina Village. Held the day before the Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade, the Stock Island event will allow vessels of all shapes and sizes the opportunity to double the fun with an extra night of showmanship. Entrants may include everything from tri-masted schooners to dinghies to the shrimp boats that call Stock Island home. Food and beverages will be available throughout the property. Spectators can walk the docks to see decorations and lights on the boats and liveaboards. The Howard Livingston Trio plays at Hogfish Bar & Grill at the official after-party.

KEY LARGO The 32nd annual Key Largo Boat Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. through the waters of Blackwater Sound.

Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster has been chosen as this year’s grand marshal. This year’s theme is ‘Paradise is Back’ and #FloridaKeysStrong.

The boats will line up at Dusenbury Creek at 6:30 p.m. and will head north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point at 7:30. Best viewing locations are the Marriott Resort, Sundowners, Senor Frijoles, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill and the Caribbean Club.

Entry to the parade is free and all boats except the “best overall” grand prize winner are entered into a $500 cash drawing, which is drawn at random from participating entries at the awards ceremony on Saturday night.

There will be cash prizes as well as trophies in seven categories. The awards ceremony will begin at 10 p.m. on the beach at Sundowners Restaurant.

SCHOONER WHARF The 27th annual Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade will take place Saturday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. with including classic schooners, fishing and pleasure crafts, kayaks and dinghies at the Key West Bight Marina at the Historic Seaport in Key West. Attendees are welcome to show up early to stroll through the Key West Harbor Walk of Lights with its array of shops, restaurants and watering-holes, decorated for the holidays. At 6 p.m., the Gerald Adams Elementary School Steel Your Heart Band will perform holiday tunes on the Schooner Wharf stage, followed by more live music.

KEY COLONY BEACH The Key Colony Beach Fishing and Boating Club will hold its annual Lighted Boat Parade at dusk, around 6 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 10. The best viewing is from the causeway or behind the Key Colony Beach City Hall/Post Office. Currently, there are eight boats signed up but they certainly have room for more. Free overnight dockage for participants is available in Key Colony Beach. This year’s parade is dedicated to the memory of Tucker Degraw, who oversaw this event for many years and who recently passed away. WHAT IN THE HECK IS AHEC?

CEO describes multifaceted agency WEEKLY STAFF REPORT

M

ichael Cunningham, CEO of AHEC (Area Health & Education Center) arrived in the Florida Keys via Buffalo, N.Y., having just married Jo-anne back in 1994. He first worked for Health and Rehabilitative Services, the precursor to the Department of Children and Family Services before joining AHEC in December 2000 as the assistant director. He was promoted to CEO two years later and has since taken the budget from $375,000 a year to $1.6 million.

Outside of the office, he has served as the chairman of numerous health-related boards, including Fishermen’s Community Hospital, the Good Health Clinic, Healthy Start Coalition and the School Health Advisory Council.

Yet, while many associate Cunningham’s community involvement with AHEC, most residents are unaware of the vast array of services his organization provides in Monroe County, from smoking cessation programs to staffing health professionals in local schools. The Weekly caught up with Cunningham to clarify who and what AHEC is exactly.

AHEC was founded in the Florida Keys almost 30 years ago and has grown significantly in the past few years. Besides the free smoking cessation program, what other services does AHEC provide? No-cost health screenings for every single Monroe County student as well as primary care services for students, their siblings and a limited amount of care to school staff. We also offer professional training for physicians and nurses as well as CPR and First Aid training for the public. We also produce several community events throughout the year with our partners like the University of Miami that promote health and wellness through education and assessments.

Last year AHEC saw 5,275 patients and recorded nearly 7,500 patient visits. What kind of screening process do you have to determine who is treated and who is not treated? We offer care for everyone — regardless of whether they have insurance or the ability to pay. Last year almost half of our patients did not have insurance. We even care for siblings or anyone in the household under the age of 18 who may be medically vulnerable or unable to receive medial attention in a timely manner.

Why is it so important to provide care for siblings and staff within the schools? Communicable diseases like pink eye, the flu, and other infections spread quickly in schools and our mission is to keep the family unit healthy.

Quick detection and treatment is essential for a healthy community or school.

We always give the parent a choice of whether they want their primary physician to treat their child rather than our nurse practitioners. We can do followups or just as easily refer them to the primary care physician as we enjoy a great working relationship with all physicians throughout the Keys.

Do you guys do anything that is actually cool? Last week we took a group of Monroe County High School students to the Ryder Trauma Center so they could learn about health career options. During the tour the students were able to see a patient with sepsis on her stomach that made her internal organs visible. They also saw a stabbing victim arrive through the Miami Air Flight program. They thought that was pretty cool. That is real-life medicine in its extreme measures.

Your annual budget to provide all these services is about $1.5 million. Where does all your funding come from? Various contracts and grants. Most of our contracts are nonrecurring and our grants are on a yearto-year basis, so we are always looking for additional funding opportunities to sustain our programs. Private donations go a long way in helping us care for the children of Monroe County.

There are 11 staff members who deliver the programs, write the grants and manage the services.

How many physicians or nurses are currently employed by AHEC? We have four nurse practitioners, one physician’s assistant, one part time medical director and one registered nurse. Other health care professionals are hired on a per-diem basis. They all work in the eight school-based clinics and our three regional offices.

You are moving the agency toward a one-stop-shop health center.

What exactly does that mean? That when you come in you will not only get your primary health care but you can use Navigator program to identify health insurance programs as well as take part in our community health programs like the Komen-funded breast health program and skin cancer assessments. Residents can also sign up for the full service UM Health Fair this coming February 3rd.

Messiah

Written by George Frideric Handel in 1741, the holiday oratorio “Messiah” has stood the test of time. On Sunday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., a community choir will perform the piece at St. Columba Church in Marathon. Over the past few years, the City of Marathon has been investing in its own decorations rather than renting the displays as in years past. Marathon Councilman Dan Zieg donated a paycheck to get the project rolling. “We all need something bright and nice and shiny for this holiday season,” he said. “In fact, I want to challenge the businesses in our town to decorate as well. We want to make it a very festive season.” Zieg also belongs to the Marathon chapter of the Lions Club, the group that sells the Christmas trees in the Kmart parking lot. NEW OWNERS! Local couple takes over Food for Thought

lair Shiver, former Weekly staffer, and her husband, Michael Nealis, are the new owners of Food for Thought in Marathon.

“They are going to do an amazing job,” said Ellin Meade, former owner.

“We feel blessed to continue on her legacy,” said Shiver.

Shiver said there will be no immediate changes to the store’s operation. In fact, Meade will continue to be involved as a mentor to the new owners while finding enough time to visit with her grandbabies in another state. The café will keep blending and creating, the bookshelves will continue to be repopulated as things sell, and the customers will continue to receive personal assistance to select the natural health remedies it stocks.

Nealis said he wants to dispel the notion that healthy food is only for the affluent.

“Everyone is welcome here,” he said.

“The thing I love most about this place is that everyone comes in,” Shiver said. “We have big, burly guys from the Electric Cooperative in here buying lunch at the café, not just ‘crunchy’ hippies,’” she said. “This store and café has a loving and welcoming atmosphere.”

Shiver and Nealis said they see the most opportunity for expansion in the café portion of the operation. It’s possible the footprint will increase and more offerings added to the menu.

“And we have the same staff,” Shiver said. “They are an extremely important part of this venture.”

Of course, the real boss will be 1-year-old daughter Amelia Nealis. For the next few years, she’s going to need some help reaching the higher shelves.

Softball is very important to me and has been since I was young. I might be fortunate enough to go to college on a softball scholarship.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why? At my old school, I had a class called ELP. That class and the tough grading was preparing me for high school and “no mercy” of college professors. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Laborin.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? A picture of my friends, a picture of my family, and a pencil because we might not have those in 2117.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10year reunion? I want to finish college, get a job, and maybe become the youngest president.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Probably not — unless I win the lottery or my dad doesn’t get a job somewhere else.

Finish this sentence: Living in the Keys has taught me … true friendship, the pain of leaving my friends, and how easy life can move on before you can catch up with it.

TOM PETTY REMEMBERED Heartbreaking loss to the music world

I

loved reading Richard Warner’s remembrance of Tom Petty a few weeks back. It was cool to read about Petty’s early life and musical development, as well as his compartmentalized conversations with different people. And there really must have been something in the Gainesville water supply for that town to have produced so many worldclass musicians.

Unlike Richard, I did not know Tom Petty back in the early days. I didn’t really know him at all, if I must be honest. But I probably spent more time with Tom Petty over the past couple of decades than most.

There probably weren’t too many Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers shows in Florida that I didn’t attend since some time in the 1990s. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Estero, Daytona Beach… and the 30th Anniversary Concert in Gainesville in 2006. There were also some special shows that involved traveling a long distance: the old Joint at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, 2005… the 30th Anniversary tour opener in Charlotte, 2006… Atlanta and Cleveland on the Mojo Tour, 2010… my wife’s birthday in London, Ontario in 2013… Mudcrutch at the Ryman in Nashville in 2016…and our third stop on the 40th anniversary tour this past July in Philadelphia. There was supposed to have been one more, but something happened. More about that later.

Tom Petty was one of my biggest influences. Period.

He crafted so many brilliant, almost perfect songs. His melodies were deceptively simple, yet contained the most amazing hooks that had everyone singing along. His lyrics told great stories that drew the listener in, had universal themes, but left just enough detail out so that one never quite knew if it was personal. He was a serious wordsmith, and he put together some lines that would have made his Traveling Wilburys big brother Bob Dylan proud.

One of Tom’s perfect songs was the title cut from the JOHN “Southern Accents” album. Along with “Rebels” from the BARTUS same album, there aren’t any better explanations of the southern life that were ever put to music. “There’s a dream is a City Council I keep having/Where my momma comes to me/And kneels member and the down over by the window/And says a prayer for me/ Vice Mayor of the City of Marathon.

And what would a Tom Petty remembrance be without paying tribute to one of the greatest American bands — the Heartbreakers. Four out of the five original Heartbreakers were still together and making amazing music right up until the end. Seeing and hearing this band, like I was fortunate enough to see three times on the tour — was an amazing musical experience of hearing musicians at the top of their game. And I’m sure that’s how any of them would have wanted to go out.

I mentioned earlier that I was supposed to have seen them one more time. I bought tickets for the final show on the tour this year, and would have been in the audience for that last show at the Hollywood Bowl … but Irma happened and turned my world upside down here. In “Crawling Back to You,” Tom wrote: “I’m so tired of being tired/Sure as night will follow day/Most things I worry about/Never happen anyway…”

But sometimes they do. Rest in peace, Tom Petty. Sorry I couldn’t make that last show. And thank you for the lifetime of music you left us.

RIDE, SANTA, RIDE Holiday Helpers bring joy to local children KRISTEN LIVENGOOD

t may be one of the newest bike rides taking place in the Middle and Upper Keys, but the Holiday Helpers bike rides aren’t just for fun.

The rides are an easy way to help local parents pick out gifts for their children during the holidays. About 5,000 local kids were given gifts last year.

The bike rides are free with an unwrapped gift for a child, although, in lieu of bringing an unwrapped present, a small donation can be made.

“These rides are crucial, and are fun ways, to get toys to children of our community,” said Jeremy Wilkerson of Wesley House Family Services. “With the devastating hurricane, the need is going to be multiplied. Your help is needed to make sure every child has a present to open for Christmas.”

The Holiday Helper stores will be open in Key West on Saturday, Dec. 16, in Marathon on Monday, Dec. 18, and in Key Largo on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 20-21. Families – suggested by partnering organizations, teachers, community members, and friends – shop at the free store.

“That’s what makes the Holiday Helpers program special; presents are not just given to the parents for their children. The parents get to shop for free in the store and pick out the presents their children would like,” said Wilkerson.

The store is a collaboration among the Wesley House, Salvation Army, Key West Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Healthy Start Coalition, and The Early Learning Coalition.

“By having multiple agencies involved, we are not duplicating services, and trying to make sure every child in need is reached,” he said.

Light Your Bike!

Jeanine Christiansen of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce helped coordinate the Marathon bike event.

“The ride was really fun last year,” she said of seeing the bikes decorated along with the houses on the route. “I think this year will be even better going behind the airport.”

Behind the airport homeowner Bambi Kuck saw information on Facebook about the ride. Although she and many of her neighbors lost a lot of Christmas decorations in the storm, they are still looking forward to showing how the community is rebuilding.

“There are a lot of people decorated in the neighborhood,” she said, as her husband has been hanging their new Amazon Prime decorations in the eve-

nings. “Not everyone will be lit up this year, but anyone who can will be.”

The Marathon Lighted Bike Ride takes off from Marathon airport on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. Check-in starts at 6 p.m. with Santa, and helmet fittings at 6:30 p.m. The ride will last about an hour. Many people have said they will be watching the Key Colony Beach Lighted Boat Parade at dusk and then heading over for the ride. Riders can pre-register at wesleyhouse.org.

Key Largo Lighted Bike Ride is Saturday, Dec. 9; it starts at Key Largo Fisheries at 6:30 p.m. and will tour the neighborhood around YMCA Park.

Check in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the Key Largo Fisheries will be doing a tree lighting after the ride.

The Key West Lighted Bike Parade took place on Wednesday. About 500 riders show up yearly to the Key West event, which takes place from Bayview Park through Duval Street.

Back in August, Maximilian Hribar of Boy Scout Troop 901 in Marathon completed his Eagle Scout service project on Pigeon Key. The campfire ring on the island was repaired and expanded and benches were installed. Above is how the fire ring looked like prior to Max’s work. S

uzanne Holt has set about the serious pursuit of discovering her fun side. Her fabric-on-canvas game is strong, and her alcohol ink work is on point. And, it’s happy.

Holt is having her first show at Shady Palm Art Gallery in Marathon starting this weekend. The work will be on display through Dec. 23. The opening reception is Friday, Dec. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. — wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres will also be served.

“It feels strange. This is the first time I’ve shown my work,” she said.

The show is made possible with a grant from Anne McKee Artist’s Fund. Because art is a sideline for Holt, that’s a help.

The fabric-on-canvas pieces have more in common with “art quilts,” which she started a few years ago, in a desire to explore the creative talents that seemed to come so easily to her sisters.

The fabric-on-canvas came not long after, growing out of an afternoon of crafts with her granddaughter, and materials on hand.

“It came out so good! And it was so fun,” said Holt.

The fabric collages include bits and pieces of everything — natural seashells, metal bits, glass beads and even tissue paper hand tinted with the aforementioned alcohol ink. The alcohol ink drawings are bright and cheerful pops of color with subject matter ranging from fish to flowers to abstract.

Holt is inspired by the Keys environment.

This is a huge departure from Holt’s regular workday. She is the director of operations for the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition. Her career is mostly in nonprofit administration. She said her work is about prevention — “We help people stay housed with rental and utility assistance so they don’t fall into homelessness.”

Holt’s work ranges in size from six inches square to pieces as large as 20 by 42 inches. Prices range from $60 to $600.
