hristmas is truly a funny time of year, whether it’s children frothy with expectation, parents tackling endless lists from stringing lights to moving a certain know-it-all elf, grandparents managing a nap during all the chaos or just regular people who get to party down in ugly sweaters. But it’s the traditions that keep us going, whether it’s hurtling down Flagler screaming “Jingle Bells” and shouting at overly decorated houses or being in a parade. Lord knows Key West loves a parade — walking, boat or bicycle, if it’s Christmas it’s gonna happen. So we asked locals...

What are your Christmas traditions?

“My son Nova, 10, and I play hide the Christmas pickle,” said Trinette Zlater.

“Someday he is going to kill me for that.”

“My family has a pajama party every Christmas Eve,” said Howard Livingston. “And we play guess what’s in Cyndy’s purse.”

“Stockings; it’s all about stockings,” said Catherine Kanagy. “Now that’s all we have because everything good is in the stockings.”

“It’s just Christmas Eve; that’s the best time with family and friends,” said Kimberly Marshall.

CITY APPROVES TWO TICKETS IN PARADISE AND HALTS DEBRIS BURN BRITT MYERS

n an evening highlighted by retiring KWPD Sergeant Robert Allen, several other Commission items led to some “heated” discussion on Dec. 5 — including a proposal to burn vegetative debris, approval for a hurricane benefit concert and a New Year’s date with Eddie Money (yes, that Eddie Money) at the amphitheater.

Debris burning halted As a cost-saving solution to the imposing vegetative debris left in the wake of Hurricane Irma, the city was poised to award Charley Toppino and Sons’ bid to perform burns from their Rockland Key location — potentially saving taxpayers more than $2 million in transfer and logistics costs.

The city, following supportive findings from the DEP, proposed the burning of debris after the county recently halted similar burns on Cudjoe Key. The measure was presented to the Commission for final approval.

Several familiar speakers op-

posed the move, citing environmental and health risks to the community.

Ed Russo, a career environmentalist, warned of the negative affects on the local reefs, wildlife, air and water quality. And Mark Songer, speaking on behalf of Last Stand, issued a stern warning on the health implications of local burns.

“The negative impacts on human health far outweigh the cost benefits,” said Songer, who also cited confirmed illnesses resulting from previous burns along Cudjoe Key. And shortly after weighing the risks, Commissioner Sam Kaufman led a charge to rescind the measure, by proposing a motion “to reject all bids in the best interest of the city.”

“We are an area of critical concern,” said Kaufman. “What a hypocrisy it would be for us if we increased air pollution right here in Key West. And how much money are we willing to save at the expense of health risks to our residents?”

Other commissioners joined in solidarity against the proposal, with

the exception of Commissioner Margaret Romero, who later cast the lone vote in support of the burn. Romero questioned whether the city had any alternative plans to remove the debris, which city officials said would be performed by a fleet of diesel trucks hauling debris over the course of several months. Kaufman’s motion to halt the burn passed 5-1, with Commissioner Richard Payne absent.

Concerts approved Two proposed concerts at the newly constructed amphitheater were seemingly primed for approval on Tuesday’s consent agenda. However, both became the subject of intense discussion after Romero pulled both items to voice concerns over a “lack of proper planning” — essentially leading to her casting the lone vote against both events.

The first concert, proposed by local businessmen Danny Hughes and Charlie Bauer, was approved to take place on Dec. 17. That show will be a fundraiser to benefit Keysstrong.org.

The second event, approved for New Year’s Eve and produced by Impact events, will feature Eddie Money.

While the commission voted 5-1 to approve both concerts, Romero engaged in heated exchanges with several on the dais. Romero argued the City continues to approve events without thorough plans and tracking measures.

“We need proper planning. Proper processes. Rates established,” said Romero. There are too many unanswered questions with this and I’m very disappointed this even got on the agenda.”

However, several commissioners cited the timing of the benefit concert, saying it would assist those in need during the holidays.

“This is simply the right thing to do.

We should be helping our neighbors,” said Commissioner Clayton Lopez.

“We are the county seat. We are acting swiftly and we are supporting something that is going to benefit our entire city and our neighbors to the north.”

Both concerts were approved and event details are scheduled to be released this week.

T

he day the Gardens Hotel went on the market, Kate Miano sold everything she owned for a down payment and signed on the dotted line by sundown.

But that’s not the beginning of her Key West story. She arrived from the Midwest for a fresh start in 1996. Miano immediately bought her first business — a five-room guest house with an apartment for herself. Like the game Monopoly, Miano put her all into the lodging business, growing it to eventually buy the “boardwalk” of Key West — the Gardens Hotel.

It was her dream but, by far, not her only life achievement. Miano was recently named the 2017 Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year, another stunning accomplishment. While a savvy businesswoman/proprietor of one of the most popular hotels in America, she has also been giving back to our community in extraordinary ways.

She said she feels blessed and likes to pay it forward. A former Fantasy Fest Queen (2008), Miano has been involved in all sorts of charities such as Aids Help, Equality Florida, Habitat for Humanity, Botanical Gardens, Florida Keys Children’s Shelter and Samuel’s House (she was also named its “Woman of Valor” this year). When the call came about the Humanitarian award, Miano thought they were asking for her help, which she would have given gladly. The unexpected honor was such a surprise she burst into tears.

So, what is the secret to Miano’s success?

“I have a hard time saying no.”

On what occasion do you lie? When people ask my age, I always add 10 years, so I can hear them say how young I look!

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Natasha from the “Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.”

What is your nerdiest passion? Watching old movies.

What is your most treasured possession? My 18-year-old Jaguar convertible.

If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Go to the Garden of Eden.

Funniest hotel guest story?

There are hundreds of them. I’ll go with convincing a guest that a “deposit” from an iguana is considered good luck in Key West.

Favorite guilty pleasure? A lovely Tuscan wine with some aged parmesan.

If you could grant Key West one wish? Find a real solution to affordable housing.

What is your greatest fear?

Nuclear war.

KWPD targets motorcycle and scooter safety

t’s no secret that Key West has a love-hate relationship with two-wheeled motorized vehicles. Scooters and motorcycles offer alternative transportation that is affordable and easy to use, especially with Key West traffic congestion and parking issues. But the flip side is sacrificing safety for convenience. While tourists are blamed for their lack of scooter driving knowledge and unfamiliarity with the streets, locals are also accountable for reckless speed with their over-familiarity and lack of caution.

And both can be looked at equally for drinking and driving. But here’s the thing: rules are rules for everybody and the police will be enforcing them.

The Key West Police Department is amping up its campaign for improved motorcycle and scooter safety with a recent $50,000 grant from the Florida Department Of Transportation. According to Alyson Crean, public relations officer, the grant will allow for more overtime pay so officers can specifically enforce scooter and motorcycle regulations. Officers will also be

able to be more proactive with warnings and stopping offenders. In conjunction, Crean will be generating media and online safety education.

Every year, the KWPD creates a map of the most common accident areas that acts as a guide for officers to police, such as the North Roosevelt crosswalks, Home Depot crosswalk, the Triangle and highly popular tourist areas like lower Duval.

Here’s what officers will be looking for, according to KWPD: Scooters and motorcycles must obey speed limits and traffic control devices. Drivers cannot carry items in a way that prevents both hands from using the handlebars, and cannot drive on sidewalks or on bicycle paths. Eye protection is required for motorcycles. Passenger footrests are required.

Passing in the same lane is illegal, especially passing on the right. It is illegal to ride between the lanes of traffic. Drivers must not ride more than two abreast and must not wear headsets while riding a motorcycle or scooter.

“Statistics look better overall,” said Crean “But with two fatalities in the past month, we still have work.”

WHAT IN THE HECK IS AHEC?

CEO describes multifaceted agency WEEKLY STAFF REPORT

M

ichael Cunningham, CEO of AHEC (Area Health & Education Center) arrived in the Florida Keys via Buffalo, N.Y., having just married Jo-anne back in 1994. He first worked for Health and Rehabilitative Services, the precursor to the Department of Children and Family Services before joining AHEC in December 2000 as the assistant director. He was promoted to CEO two years later and has since taken the budget from $375,000 a year to $1.6 million.

Outside of the office, he has served as the chairman of numerous health-related boards, including Fishermen’s Community Hospital, the Good Health Clinic, Healthy Start Coalition and the School Health Advisory Council.

Yet, while many associate Cunningham’s community involvement with AHEC, most residents are unaware of the vast array of services his organization provides in Monroe County, from smoking cessation programs to staffing health professionals in local schools. The Weekly caught up with Cunningham to clarify who and what AHEC is exactly.

AHEC was founded in the Florida Keys almost 30 years ago and has grown significantly in the past few years. Besides the free smoking cessation program, what other services does AHEC provide? No-cost health screenings for every single Monroe County student as well as primary care services for students, their siblings and a limited amount of care to school staff. We also offer professional training for physicians and nurses as well as CPR and First Aid training for the public. We also produce several community events throughout the year with our partners like the University of Miami that promote health and wellness through education and assessments.

Last year AHEC saw 5,275 patients and recorded nearly 7,500 patient visits. What kind of screening process do you have to determine who is treated and who is not treated? We offer care for everyone — regardless of whether they have insurance or the ability to pay. Last year almost half of our patients did not have insurance. We even care for siblings or anyone in the household under the age of 18 who may be medically vulnerable or unable to receive medial attention in a timely manner.

Why is it so important to provide care for siblings and staff within the schools? Communicable diseases like pink eye, the flu, and other infections spread quickly in schools and our mission is to keep the family unit healthy.

Quick detection and treatment is essential for a healthy community or school.

We always give the parent a choice of whether they want their primary physician to treat their child rather than our nurse practitioners. We can do followups or just as easily refer them to the primary care physician as we enjoy a great working relationship with all physicians throughout the Keys.

Do you guys do anything that is actually cool? Last week we took a group of Monroe County High School students to the Ryder Trauma Center so they could learn about health career options. During the tour the students were able to see a patient with sepsis on her stomach that made her internal organs visible. They also saw a stabbing victim arrive through the Miami Air Flight program. They thought that was pretty cool. That is real-life medicine in its extreme measures.

Your annual budget to provide all these services is about $1.5 million. Where does all your funding come from? Various contracts and grants. Most of our contracts are nonrecurring and our grants are on a yearto-year basis, so we are always looking for additional funding opportunities to sustain our programs. Private donations go a long way in helping us care for the children of Monroe County.

There are 11 staff members who deliver the programs, write the grants and manage the services.

How many physicians or nurses are currently employed by AHEC? We have four nurse practitioners, one physician’s assistant, one part time medical director and one registered nurse. Other health care professionals are hired on a per-diem basis. They all work in the eight school-based clinics and our three regional offices.

You are moving the agency toward a one-stop-shop health center.

What exactly does that mean? That when you come in you will not only get your primary health care but you can use Navigator program to identify health insurance programs as well as take part in our community health programs like the Komen-funded breast health program and skin cancer assessments. Residents can also sign up for the full service UM Health Fair this coming February 3rd.

T

he Waterfront Playhouse begins its 2017-18 season with the comedy “Inspecting Carol,”

by Daniel Sullivan. This riff on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is a cross between “Noises Off” and “Waiting For Guffman,” as a struggling theater’s annual holiday production goes horribly wrong. The American Journal called the play “sheer comic genius.”

“Inspecting Carol” takes place at the Soap Box Playhouse - a struggling theater company that is in rehearsals for its annual production of “A Christmas Carol.” As with many theaters, “Carol” is the annual cash cow; however, the production has become stale and shabby over the years. The Tiny Tim is not so tiny, Scrooge is a scotchswilling socialist and the company’s funding is on hold pending an inspection from the National Endowment of the Arts. When an aspiring actor of somewhat questionable talent arrives to audition, he is mistaken for the inspector with the NEA. The entire company caters to the bewildered wannabe actor, indulging his every misguided whim. Things begin to spiral out of control with questionable casting, the special effects going haywire and a fireworks display of clashing egos.

The show will be directed by Murphy Davis, who directed a production of “Inspecting Carol” at the Bay Street

Theater in Sag Harbor, N.Y., when he was artistic director there. The Waterfront production will feature a cast of 12 actors - some familiar and others new to the Waterfront stage. The set of the Soap Box Playhouse is designed by the Waterfront’s scenic designer, Michael Boyer. Carmen Rodriguez has costumed the cast in an array of both contemporary and period costumes. John Jaworski acts as lighting designer and Peggy Montgomery acts as stage manager.

Opening night is Dec. 14, with a party in the Sculpture Garden after the production, sponsored by Kate Regan & Ken Silverman. There are two lowpriced previews on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13. All performances are 8 p.m.

RIDE, SANTA, RIDE Holiday Helpers bring joy to local children

t may be one of the newest bike rides taking place in the Middle and Upper Keys, but the Holiday Helpers bike rides aren’t just for fun. The rides are an easy way to help local parents pick out gifts for their children during the holidays. About 5,000 local kids were given gifts last year.

The bike rides are free with an unwrapped gift for a child, although, in lieu of bringing an unwrapped present, a small donation can be made.

“These rides are crucial, and are fun ways, to get toys to children of our community,” said Jeremy Wilkerson of Wesley House Family Services. “With the devastating hurricane, the need is going to be multiplied.

Your help is needed to make sure every child has a present to open for Christmas.”

The Holiday Helper stores will be open in Key West on Saturday, Dec. 16, in Marathon on Monday, Dec. 18, and in Key Largo on Wednesday and Thursdsay, Dec. 20-21.

Families – suggested by partnering organizations, teachers, community members, and friends – shop at the free store.

“That’s what makes the Holiday Helpers program special; presents are not just given to the parents for their children. The parents get to shop for free in the store and pick out the presents their children would like,” said Wilkerson.

The store is a collaboration among the Wesley House, Salvation Army, Key West Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Healthy Start Coalition, and The Early Learning Coalition.

“By having multiple agencies involved, we are not duplicating services, and trying to make sure every child in need is reached,” he said.

Jeanine Christiansen of the Marathon Chamber of Commerce helped coordinate the Marathon bike event. “The ride was really fun last year,” she said of seeing the bikes decorated along with the houses on the route. “I think this year will be even better going behind the airport.”

Behind the airport homeowner Bambi Kuck saw information on Facebook about the ride. Although she and many of her neighbors lost a lot of Christmas decorations in the storm, they are still looking forward to showing how the community is rebuilding.

“There are a lot of people decorated in the neighborhood,” she said, as her husband has been hanging their new Amazon Prime decorations in the evenings. “Not everyone will be lit up this year, but anyone who can will be.”

THE MARATHON LIGHTED BIKE RIDE takes off from Marathon airport on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. Check-in starts at 6 p.m. with Santa, and helmet fittings at 6:30 p.m. The ride will last about an hour. Many people have said they will be watching the Key Colony Beach Lighted Boat Parade at dusk and then heading over for the ride. Riders can pre-register at wesleyhouse.org.

KEY LARGO LIGHTED BIKE RIDE is Saturday, Dec. 9; it starts at Key Largo Fisheries at 6:30 p.m. and will tour the neighborhood around YMCA Park. Check in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the Key Largo Fisheries will be doing a tree lighting after the ride.

THE KEY WEST LIGHTED BIKE PARADE took place on Wednesday. About 500 riders show up yearly to the Key West event, which takes place from Bayview Park through Duval Street.

he outer walls were lined with KWPD formal uniforms in the early moments of Tuesday’s Key West City Commission meeting.

Colleagues, friends and family gathered to celebrate Sgt. Robert Allen’s 30 years of service, while wishing him well on his announced retirement.

As Jim Scholl called Allen to the podium, the city manager read off a decorated list of the sergeant’s achievements and accolades — including a Silver Star for bravery (resulting in a successful act to foil a bank robbery), Officer of the Year in Key West and the State of Florida, an induction in the Police Hall of Fame — along with founding programs such as the local Honor Guard, the Marine Patrol & Dive Team and the local Love Fund to support fellow officer’s families in need.

True to character and fighting back tears during his comments, Allen deflected personal praise and paid tribute to a list of fallen officers who served with him throughout this career.

“These are guys I worked with and shared sacrifice with,” said Allen. “They worked hard and left their families to serve this community.”

Allen also seized the opportunity to praise and coach the younger members in his department, with dozens of them looking on from the back of the room.

“To the new officers and younger guys, never compromise your integrity and your character,” said Allen. “But even through times when you are tested and tried — patience, tolerance and communication are traits that will get you to 30 years. You have to talk to people. It works. I hope I’ve shown you something that makes you say ‘I can do it.’”

Allen, who joined KWPD at 19, announced he is not leaving Key West, with aspirations to spend more time on the water.

“I’ve been a very fortunate guy to find something I love to do,” said Allen.

“I’m very proud of the things we’ve done and I’m very proud of this island community.”

Kids head to The North Pole

T

he Silverliners have done it again on Dec 5 with their highly successful day at the “North Pole” at the Key West airport. For almost 40 years they have provided children of the Keys a fun day filled with activities, games and special presents given out by Santa and Mrs. Claus. More than 600 children from ages 3-5, all the way from Big Pine to Key West, had a taste of Christmas, and all for free. There were Christmas carols from Howard Livingston and a host of volunteers entertaining, feeding and making the day magical for the kids.

RUNWAY GETS MAKEOVER

Work is at night when airport is closed

K

ey West International Airport has started a 5-month, $10 million reconstruction project on its only runway (9-27).

The runway is more than 15 years old and has experienced about 900,000 take-offs and landings.

The work will occur at night when the airport is closed. The airport will be open during the day for all scheduled commercial airlines and general aviation.

Airport neighbors may notice an increase in noise and truck traffic overnight during the construction.

“With only one runway at Key West, this is a very challenging project,” said Donald DeGraw, director of airports for Monroe County.

The work includes: • Milling and overlay of the existing runway with new pavement.

• Widening the shoulders from 10 to 20 feet on both sides.

• Upgrading the runway lighting to LED, with a 60 percent savings in energy usage.

• Adding 270 feet of takeoff distance available for Runway 9 only.

• Improving drainage in the grass safety areas abutting the runway.

The project is being constructed

by Miami-based General Asphalt, with Charley Toppino & Sons working on the rehabilitation as a local subcontractor.

It is paid for by federal, state and airport funding sources.

A

n “odd relationship that probably shouldn’t happen” is at the heart of the play that will kick off the Red Barn Theatre’s 38th season this month.

“Dancing Lessons,” by Mark St. Germain, opens on Dec. 19 and runs through Jan. 13. Directed by the Barn’s artistic director Joy Hawkins, the play stars Dave Bootle and Carolyn Cooper.

The play is focused on Ever and Senga, New Yorkers who live two floors apart in the same apartment building. Ever is a brilliant professor of geosciences at a local college whose expertise is global warming but he has trouble with any other kind of warmth, as he is, in his words, an “Aspy” – a person with Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning condition on the Autism spectrum. He is unable to tolerate even the most minimal physical contact and does not even make eye contact all that often.

Senga is a successful Broadway dancer coping with a potentially career-ending leg injury, and not handling it well. Dancing had been her everything, and her injury has left her adrift, encumbered by a massive leg brace that may be permanent, and she is not a little embittered. She has, in fact, shut out the world.

Then Ever knocks on Senga’s door and within seconds of her answering, offers her an outrageous sum of money if she would give him an hour’s

lesson in dancing. He is being feted at an awards ceremony at his college and he doesn’t want to be “conspicuous”.

Thus begins the tale of two very different people thrown together by life.

“They somehow make it work in a very strange way,” said Bootle at rehearsal recently. “It’s an odd relationship that probably shouldn’t happen, but it does, and we love it. There are some really, really funny parts in this play, but it will really touch your heart as well.”

The playwright, St. Germain, had no interest in autism or dancers, but a chance meeting with a friend’s autistic son changed that.

Berkshire on Stage said the play “takes us to the verge of tears even as we are laughing delightedly.” The Orlando Sentinel said it’s “an off-kilter love story, a witty comedy.”

“Dancing Lessons” will run Tuesdays through Saturdays. There will be a special preview performance Monday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. All Tuesday performances are at 7 p.m., while all other days are at 8 p.m. There will be a special Opening Night party after the performance at La Te Da, where Bootle will be entertaining.

emember that old shoebox of baseball cards your grandfather gave you? Well, for some, those boxes could represent a fortune — many times going unnoticed over several lifetimes.

And if you do have a sizable collection of sports cards or memorabilia, odds are your investment is completely uninsured.

That is where Michael Osacky can help.

Dubbed “the Dean of Cracker Jack Baseball Cards” by Forbes, the Chicago native specializes in vintage baseball cards and sports memorabilia. Not only does Osacky’s company, Baseball in the Attic, seek out and purchase memorabilia, he also specializes in appraising personal collections.

“The insurance carriers don’t allow homeowners to say how much their collections are worth,” said Osacky. “But I create a formal, written appraisal that providers can utilize.”

Osacky, who will be evaluating two “significant” collections in Key West this Thursday and Friday, said he often finds people who stored vintage cards and memorabilia away, never realizing their true value.

“I had an older couple that had an entire set of 176 Cracker Jack Cards,” said Osacky.

“Keep in mind only one per box came with Cracker Jacks in 1914 and 1915. They thought the cards were worth about $2,000,

but when I told them they were valued at around $80,000, they just started crying.

I then recommended they use an armed guard to escort them out of the building,” he said, laughing.

Although baseball and sports card collections reached a pinnacle in the 1980s and ’90s, Osacky’s ideal client possesses cards and memorabilia ranging from 1870 to 1970. Think Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Willie Mays and you will be on the right track.

“I especially love anything that has a story with it,” said Osacky. “The best stories are when someone has something that Grandpa got at Yankee Stadium as a kid, or items that were passed down from generation to generation.”

Baseball cards are not the only items that carry potential value. Osacky said some of his personal favorites are vintage Chicago Cubs Spring Training programs, early 1900 baseball pennants, baseball bats, uniforms and autographs.

“Autograph books were popular in the 1940s and ’50s,” said Osacky. “It was much easier for kids to get players to sign autographs before and after games and these things would be filled with huge names. But the coolest thing about these books was the first page had the kid’s name and information and really tell a neat story today.”

For those who are skeptical, a simple Google search of a Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps rookie card should be enough to prompt a thorough search through storage bins and shoeboxes. That card is often valued well above $1 million, while the rare 1909 Honus Wagner tobacco card has fetched close to $3 million at auctions. BOAT PARADES DAZZLE IN THE KEYS Four events happen this weekend

I

f you want to see boats lit up like Christmas trees, this weekend is your weekend. From Key Largo to Key West, four lighted boat parades are scheduled for Friday through Sunday.

Fair warning, though: You can probably only get to three of them.

STOCK ISLAND The inaugural Stock Island Lighted Boat Parade will take place Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., with pre-parade activities starting at 6 p.m. from Stock Island Marina Village. Held the day before the Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade, the Stock Island event will allow vessels of all shapes and sizes the opportunity to double the fun with an extra night of showmanship. Entrants may include everything from tri-masted schooners to dinghies to the shrimp boats that call Stock Island home. Food and beverages will be available throughout the property. Spectators can walk the docks to see decorations and lights on the boats and liveaboards. The Howard Livingston Trio plays at Hogfish Bar & Grill at the official after-party.

KEY LARGO The 32nd annual Key Largo Boat Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. through the waters of Blackwater Sound.

Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster has been chosen as this year’s grand marshal. This year’s theme is ‘Paradise is Back’ and #FloridaKeysStrong.

The boats will line up at Dusenbury Creek at 6:30 p.m. and will head north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point at 7:30. Best viewing locations are the Marriott Resort, Sundowners, Senor Frijoles, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill and the Caribbean Club.

Entry to the parade is free and all boats except the “best overall” grand prize winner are entered into a $500 cash drawing, which is drawn at random from participating entries at the awards ceremony on Saturday night.

There will be cash prizes as well as trophies in seven categories. The awards ceremony will begin at 10 p.m. on the beach at Sundowners Restaurant.

SCHOONER WHARF The 27th annual Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade will take place Saturday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. with including classic schooners, fishing and pleasure crafts, kayaks and dinghies at the Key West Bight Marina at the Historic Seaport in Key West. Attendees are welcome to show up early to stroll through the Key West Harbor Walk of Lights with its array of shops, restaurants and watering-holes, decorated for the holidays. At 6 p.m., the Gerald Adams Elementary School Steel Your Heart Band will perform holiday tunes on the Schooner Wharf stage, followed by more live music.

KEY COLONY BEACH The Key Colony Beach Fishing and Boating Club will hold its annual Lighted Boat Parade at dusk, around 6 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 10. The best viewing is from the causeway or behind the Key Colony Beach City Hall/Post Office. Currently, there are eight boats signed up but they certainly have room for more. Free overnight dockage for participants is available in Key Colony Beach. This year’s parade is dedicated to the memory of Tucker Degraw, who oversaw this event for many years and who recently passed away. Deadline nears for agencies to seek funding for recovery

ith generous donations, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Keys Area announces that in its continuing efforts to recover from Hurricane Irma, it is able to continue to waive all fees for children attending the Key West and Big Pine Key clubs through March 31, 2018.

“The Boys and Girls Club is proud to be an active partner in our community’s efforts to recover from Hurricane Irma,” said Dan Dombroski, executive director of the Keys area clubs. “This (Deerbrook Charitable Trust Foundation) award demonstrates a commitment from our entire organization to serve our community in the best possible way.”

The fee waivers are available for current and new members. In addition, the clubs are also able to extend the closing time from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Key West location.

“The program started after the storm,” said Dombroski. “What’s good about this, it’s a long-term recovery to help our community members. Some-

one might be able to work an extra shift and make a little extra money knowing their children are being taken care of.”

The Big Pine Key club suffered severe damage from the hurricane and is under redevelopment. In the meantime, the club is set up at a temporary location at a Big Pine Key church.

Beginning in January, the Key West location will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be offering free academic tutoring from certified teachers. The children will also be provided free lunch through March 31, 2018.

Every other Friday night starting in January, the Key West club will have a teen night. This is open for teens to engage in some positive social and fun activities, individually and as a group.

There will also be free snacks.

nited Way of the Florida Keys (UWFK) has allocated more than $1 million in aid for hurricane recovery efforts throughout Monroe County.

UWFK is now accepting applications in hurricane rebuilding and recovery funding for human service nonprofits throughout Monroe County. The application can be found at www.keysunitedway.org. Applications must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 9, 2017.

The UWFK board has also earmarked $200,000 to expand “safety net” Irma recovery efforts during its traditional allocation process in the spring of 2018.

Immediately after the storm, UWFK distributed more than $20,000 in direct aid to individuals, in the form of store gift cards and cleaning supplies and tools; emergency “mini-grants” totaling $52,700 were also quickly disbursed to eight local, established partner nonprofits directly serving individuals and families affected by the storm, with an additional $45,000 dedicated towards hotel rooms to assist residents in the Upper Keys without housing due to Irma-related damages to their homes.

In October, UWFK distributed another $80,000 in additional “mini-grants” to 16 previously vetted partner agencies, including Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, Southernmost Boys & Girls Clubs, KAIR, Star of the Sea Mission Outreach, and many others. The UWFK Board of Directors also committed $100,000 for direct aid and case management to assist families and individuals struggling with the effects of the storm, in partnership with local organizations including Catholic Charities, KAIR, and FKOC. Following an application process in early November, $170,000 was distributed to nonprofits engaged in recovery efforts throughout the Keys, including Sister Season Fund, Grace Jones Community Center, Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition and others. Additionally, $270,000 has been allocated for further assistance, with most of the money earmarked for housing assistance to families displaced from their homes in the Lower and Middle Keys.

hile sitting around the table at the Wesley House Family Service’s Adoption Day luncheon in November, Kelley Porter shared her Hurricane Irma evacuation story. Her two children, Lance, 11 and Kassie, 12, added funny little anecdotes along the way.

“When we saw the satellite photos of our house, I knew we weren’t coming home until we could provide a safe roof over their heads,” said Kelley, nodding to the siblings, whom she and her husband, Carl, adopted Nov. 15, 2016. The roof failed over the master bedroom and office area and Kassie’s room’s hurricane shutter was blown off, breaking the window. “Shards of glass were stabbed into her mattress,” said Kelley. “She lost about 99 percent of her stuff.”

What started off as an easy evacuation chased the family (two parents, two kids, one grandma, three dogs, six birds and a cat, in two vehicles!) all the way to Gatlinburg, Tenn. “The trip wasn’t bad,” she said. “The whole town had free events for Florida evacuees, so we got to go to a comedy show, bowling and the county fair.”

But after the storm passed, reality set in. They needed a place to live while they repaired their Big Pine Key home.

“We seriously test drove 15 RVs on the way back to the Keys,” she said.

They settled on a 30-footer the kids quickly nicknamed the rolling turd.

Right after buying, 15 miles away, the RV blew a tire. After that was fixed, 10 more miles down the road, another one blew. “Just give me all new tires,” Kelley said, exhausted.

George Sheldon, of Our Kids, the funding partner of Wesley House, was sitting at the table while Kelley was telling their story. “After hearing stories like this, I really realize the critical condition the Keys are in,” he said.

Kelley and Carl married six years ago, on Sept. 10, you know, D-Day for Irma. They spent their anniversary keeping their mind off the hurricane by exploring the Smoky Mountains.

“Irma was nothing,” she said. “When we married, Carl was diagnosed with cancer four months later.” He is now in remission, but the medical issues led them to look into adoption.

Lance and Kassie moved in with them in April 2016 and completed their family. The one thing they are learning from the storm: “It’s teaching the kids to be resilient, that’s for sure.”

As for the holidays, Kelley expects they will be back in their home midway through December, just in time for Christmas. They spent last weekend painting, with tile and carpeting coming next week. And she said she heard Santa is bringing the kids a super special surprise this year, but we won’t spoil the news.

“We have been so blessed and helped by so many people,” she said.

“But, this RV is feeling smaller every day, so we really can’t wait to be back in the house.”

Their sense of humor and perpetual optimism keep them going. When asked if they needed anything, Kelley just said they were doing really, really well and if their story inspires anyone, to make a donation to Wesley House, Sugarloaf School, Girls Scout Troop 9 or Boy Scout Troop 573.
