FLORIDA KEYS COMMUNITY CONCERT BAND The Community Band puts on free concerts each month from November to April. The rehearsal and concert format invites local musicians to participate. Community Band members also tutor young student musicians in oneon-one or group instruction.

The community band’s Young Musician Award program provides gift certificates for lessons and supplies to students who prepare and participate in the Young Musicians Concert. The concerts also allow for other musical groups like the Island Dulcimers, Silver Shores Singers, and Keys Breeze Barbershop Quartet to have a performance. GOOD HEALTH CLINIC INC. The clinic serves uninsured and eligible low-income residents of the Florida Keys in need of medical care and services. As a primary-care facility, the Good Health Clinic provides in-house and outside services at the various offices of its volunteer participants. Services include preventative care, urgent care, chronic disease management, and women’s health services and family planning. The clinic’s referred specialty care services include orthopedics, dermatology, gynecology, mental health, ophthalmology and optometry, physical therapy, nutritional counseling and more. The Good Health Clinic’s Big Kahuna fundraising competition has also begun. Leader says Morada Way is ‘much more’ than Art Walk GABRIEL SANCHEZ

A

nders Urbom isn’t an artist per se, but that doesn’t stop him from holding a vast appreciation for the arts. That is probably what makes Urbom best suited for his job as executive director of Morada Way Arts & Cultural District. “I learned through the crucible of fire-tested customer service at the highest levels to temper emotion, listen to messages from clients and customers, organize, train and motivate teams to deliver a consistent product and service,” said Urbom of his background in hospitality.

And much as hospitality focuses on customer service, Urbom is focusing the budding arts and cultural district on being a service provider of fun in the community. Urbom is already working with Islamorada Community Entertainment and organizations like the Afro Roots World Music Festival for the upcoming year. Along with bringing in modern dance and burlesque acts, Morada Way is also planning to collaborate with local drama organizations and expand programs available to artists for professional development.

What are three challenges/misconceptions that Morada Way is currently facing? One misconception is that we are only responsible for the Art Walk, where the reality is we are engaged in much more than that every day through several programs which serve both the public and the artist community. Another misconception is that we are fully funded through angel donors. The reality is we have been building revenue models to mitigate the “ask” from the public. We are always in need of donations big and small and this can be done through the website. All donations are tax deductible.

Lastly, the misconception that we are only for painters. We have something to offer anyone involved or interested in any aspect of the fine arts and we are expanding our outreach to a myriad artistic mediums.

You’ve compared the work of Morada Way to that of a service provider. What’s the service and how is it provided? Study after study demonstrate consistently that a healthy and vibrant fine arts community will increase a community’s economic output, expand and diversify its resources which come in from outside the community and raise the quality of life for the residents in that community. The Arts District is the hub and central effort to bring a well-rounded, fine arts presence in Islamorada and the Upper Keys. If you have a basic understanding of the climate in the U.S. right now regarding support of the arts, you are aware that we are going uphill every day. The return on investment for the community is well worth the effort, though.

What are some of the programs that Morada Way is running? The Children’s Shelter is continuing to receive hands-on work with clay and ceramics; in fact the Clay Studio continues to be quite a dynamic space, providing a studio for many local potters. In addition, Studio Sesh Arts in the gallery at 151 Morada Way provides many unique opportunities in various mediums and we are excited to expand the hands-on, therapeutic program of working with clay and expression through painting classes.

One of your goals is to get young art students in the community involved in the art scene and help expand their resumes. What’s the plan? I have opportunities for young people in the community to get direct experience in running two art galleries alongside working professionals from the community.

It’s an internship, essentially, with a commission pay structure.

Why should local artists strongly consider joining the Arts and Trades and Beyond professional development program? We are launching this program in January or February and the concept is to match skills artists are already using and develop them with an eightweek program to help them expand their options for income. This is a pilot program of which there will be six disciplines. It was made possible through a matching grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys.

You brought in a master ceramicist to Morada Way Clay. How does working with clay benefit a person, and explain the role that the clay studio has in the district? You may not realize that the clay studio is the largest revenue driver in the Arts District. We have found a master ceramicist who can bring it to its full potential and we only need $15,000 in underwriting to have him full time to develop consistent programming, which includes expansion of the hands-on, therapeutic programs for children, veterans and anyone affected by the recent trauma of Hurricane Irma. We are even discussing a reef awareness program expressed through clay!

You’ve addressed a number of needs of Morada Way via the underwriting process. What are some of the needs the Arts & Cultural District still has? Housing is the biggest; we are currently looking for someone to write off 12 months’ rent on property which we can use to house lecturers, musicians, artists in residence and more. Everything we do has a cost and our services are generally low to no cost which means we rely immensely on the generosity of the community.

A couple more questions …

You drive to work from the mainland every day; how do you occupy your time? On my drive I listen to podcasts. My favorite is RadioLab. They cover anything and everything by telling stories using audio clips to bring a story to life. I like to devour information. I’m also a traffic nerd so I pay attention to the data of my drive.

What kind of art do you have in your home? I have paintings, of course. But above an upright piano we have a wedding gift that’s stained glass and has a lot of piano themed imagery on it. I have earthenware, sculptures, musical instruments, and a great deal of art from my three young children, too.

How did you get this job? I was brought into the interview process through Robbie McClung. He said he thought my background and interests would be a good fit.

What do you do in the Keys for fun?

Well, food is my first passion, so I like to talk shop in local restaurants. And photography. I like to find good spots to take photographs. My favorite spot is down by Bud and Mary’s — I can capture good landscapes with a lot of sky and a lot of water. At different times of day that spot can look very different.

The Village of Islamorada’s parking plan study team will hold open houses on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 6-7.

FLORIDA KEYS WILD BIRD CENTER The rehabbers and educators of the bird center rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds in the Keys. When birds have been hurt or displaced, the center serves as a safe and humane shelter for recovering and non-releasable birds. Non-released birds are used to educate the public at a variety of events and educational fieldtrips the organization coordinates throughout the year. www.keepthemflying.org

UPPER KEYS HUMANE SOCIETY The Upper Keys Humane Society Inc. provides Keys critters with food, shelter and medical care. Its adoption services help neglected, unwanted and abandoned pets find homes. The shelter houses 18 dog kennels and 11 cat condos. Managed by an all-volunteer board, the shelter maximizes its donations by only paying employees and diverting all other funds to care for its animals and shelter maintenance. The society primarily serves animals from North Key Largo to Lower Matecumbe. The shelter always has a need for dog food, cat food, newspapers, towels, sheet and blankets, toys, treats, and cleaning products. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. www.upperkeyshumanesociety.org

Islamorada Founders Park will reopen Sunday, Dec. 3. All facilities are open except for the Ron Levy Aquatic Center, golf driving range and soccer field. Closed facilities will remain closed until the needed repairs are final. The village is encouraging everyone to return and enjoy the park during its normal hours, sunrise to sunset. he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys continued its push to help victims of Hurricane Irma during the Nov. 21 Islamorada Chamber of Commerce after hours social. Along with the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund, which primarily assists residents of Islamorada, CFFK distributed $90,000 in grants to eight Upper Keys non-profits leading the way in relief efforts.

Recipients include the Monroe County Education Foundation, Good Health Clinic, Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys, Coral Isles Church, Bluewater in the Florida Keys, Dolphins to Stop Domestic Violence, St. James the Fisherman Church, and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Four community advisory committees – representing Key West, the Lower Keys, Middle Keys, and Upper Keys – have been tasked with finding the most effective ways to distribute the nearly $1 million in donations to aid residents throughout the entire Keys. Islamorada Investment Management Partner, Lauretta ‘Retz’ Reeves, is leading the Upper Keys committee.

agement, the grants were awarded inside the adjoining Everglades Room.

W

ith a collective 25 years of experience performing, south Florida rock and roll band Static is emerging as one of the more talented groups gigging in the Upper Keys. Formed in 2014, the band’s prowess is quickly apparent by its tight playing. These gentlemen can jam.

Guitarist Alejandro “Nanu” Hernandez handles the busy work of jumping between rhythm and lead with ease.

His solo play even earned him an endorsement from the Gibson guitar line. Originally from Venezuela, Hernandez fell in love with the guitar at age 11 after finding a classical guitar at his grandmother’s house. Hernandez would progress from his high school rock band to work on a studio album with the alt-rock band Satori.

Bassist Javier Manrique began playing music early as a percussionist

in a Brazilian band before developing a love for the bass guitar. Coming from a renowned Peruvian family of musicians, Manrique has always been involved in recording, shows, and musical projects.

Omar Vivoni, the newest member, has taken on the band’s drumming duties. Originally from Puerto Rico, Vivoni has toured and worked as a studio musician.

Finally, with a background in the New York punk scene, vocalist Alvaro Gomez brings high energy and passion to each performance.

Having previously fronted three bands, Gomez is a true showman who enjoys connecting with his audience.

Their scheduled performances are Dec. 9 and 23 at Hog Heaven, Dec. 29 at Gilberts, Jan. 27 at Lorelei, and Feb. 10 at Gilberts.

PRESTON PINDER Preston Monroe Pinder – the eighth generation of the Pinder family in the Keys – was born at 3:06 a.m. on Oct. 20, 2017, at Lower Keys Medical Center, Key West. He weighed 7 pounds and 12 ounces at birth and was 21 inches long.

His mother, Kelly Pinder, is a biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. His father, Brandon Pinder, is IT director for Singh Investors.

The family lives in Key West.

His maternal grandmother is JoAnn Jones of Goldsborough, N.C. Paternal grandparents are Buddy and Cerise Pinder of Islamorada.

Wesley House’s mission is to promote and enhance the safety, well-being and development of children by educating, supporting and meeting the needs of families. Its roots date back to the beginning of the 1900s as a program to help Cuban-speaking kindergartners learn English and transition into public school easier. In the mid-1940s, the nonprofit started focusing on professional childcare for working parents, opening the Inez Martin Childcare Center in Key West in 1971. The agency also encompasses all aspects of dependency care, including family support and prevention services, foster and adoptive families, and promotion of healthy families in Monroe County. www.wesleyhouse.org

While helping with hurricane disaster relief in the Keys, the organization is also vital for blood donation, CPR training, and services for people who experience other disasters like home fires. MONROE COUNTY EDUCATION FOUNDATION FLORIDA KEYS CHILDREN’S SHELTER The goal of Florida Keys Children’s Shelter is to provide safety to children, create strong families, and keep a healthy community. Programs include an emergency shelter in Tavernier, a group home for children in Key West, and Project Lighthouse, a drop-in center in Key West for runaway, at-risk, or homeless youths. Placement can be short- or longterm. After Hurricane Irma, the center also opened up beds for children who had nowhere to sleep. The annual Mayor’s Ball, which takes place in January at the Casa Marina in Key West, is one of the major fundraisers for the shelter. www.fkcs.org

he 32nd annual Key Largo Boat Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Illuminated boats ranging from 55-foot motorboats to sailboats to kayaks and paddleboards will traverse the waters of Blackwater Sound to kick off the holidays.

Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster has been chosen as this year’s grand marshal, riding in a boat be captained by Spencer Slate.

‘This year’s theme is ‘Paradise is Back’ #FloridaKeysStrong. ‘We’re here, we’re doing well, and we’re open for business,’ said Bob Stoky of the parade committee.

“As one of the first annual holiday events after Irma, we’d like to see this parade with more boats than ever,” said Sue Finney, event coordinator.

The boats will line up at the headpin to Dusenbury Creek at 6.30 p.m. and at 7.30 p.m. will head north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point. Best public viewing locations are the Marriott Resort, Sundowners, Senor Frijoles, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill and the Caribbean Club.

Entry to the parade is FREE and all boats except the “best overall” grand prize winner are entered into the $500 cash drawing, which is drawn at random from participating entries at the awards ceremony on Saturday night. More than $1,500 in cash as well as trophies and prizes will be awarded in seven categories.

The awards ceremony will begin at 10 p.m. on the beach at Sundowners Restaurant, hosted by Captains Spencer Slate and Skip Bradeen.
