ive billion dollars: that’s how much Americans spent in 24 hours online after the holiday. It was an all-time record in Black Friday sales. Who was the winner? Amazon, of course. And now Jeff Bezos is worth $100 billion and could own and operate his own medium-sized country. So how do local retailers cash in on some of that dough? Get a piece of that pie? We asked local vendors …

How do local retailers compete with online business?

“You must have a consistent, delicious, affordable product,” said Denise Chelekis of Lick Your Lips Dips. “And the key word is consistent.” Chelekis is the former owner of Camille’s Restaurant and famous creator of a spinach artichoke dip.

“People have to realize the artisan market isn’t just for show; they have to help the smaller entrepreneur. They have to get over this American mentality that they are here to browse and go home to shop online,” said Guillaume Pailloux of Pasta Pailloux. “Bring your bags and buy pasta, buy vegetables, buy pickles, buy fresh foods, eat it, enjoy it and then come back next week.” This is the freshest pasta available, folks!

“Next week we are a part of the I Love Stock Island Festival,” said Debbie Fritz of Washed Up, specializing in recycled art. “Events like this are a great way to promote local business by the city.”

“It would be great to have a permanent market for local vendors with affordable rent,” said Sofia Artola of Apothecary— homemade, organic body oils and lotions with the Majanjali Café. “The Armory would be perfect as a permanent space for just local vendors so people could access them all the time. The community has to make it affordable for locals to buy and sell products.”

Samuel’s House is deeply committed to helping women and men with families in the Keys. It is a safe shelter and provides physical and mental care to those most in need. Founded in 1999, it originally was intended to help displaced women and children who needed shelter and emergency services. Now, it provides comprehensive health and human services programs for women and men with children and intact families that are homeless. AIDS HELP In 1986, during the AIDS epidemic, Key West individuals started the countywide AIDS Help – the only community-based HIV/AIDS service organization in the Florida Keys. For 30 years, AIDS Help has provided individuals with managed health care, food programs, counseling, housing, clinical and other supportive and volunteer services. AIDS Help has also provided affordable housing, access to health education and linkage to care to people living with AIDS in Monroe County. It has helped more than 3,000 individuals and cares for up to 350 clients every year.

The foundation is behind The Michelle Keevan Halpern Center for Learning that provides free tutoring and teaches learning skills to at risk Monroe County Students. Suzanne Moore is new chamber board president

What do you consider your greatest achievement? My fabulous, gorgeous 12-year-old son.

I

t’s the slight Irish lilt that gives Suzanne Moore’s homeland away. It’s been quite an adventure from her childhood in Ireland to becoming the new chamber of commerce board president and a top Key West Realtor. From picking strawberries at age 20 to afford her first flight to New York City, looking for palm trees in Fort Lauderdale and singing at Irish pubs and then, with “one suitcase and $500,” landing in Key West instead of Aspen to work at Finnegan’s Wake, Moore would by fate meet the love of her life, Randy Moore, and stay for good. The tale is full of ups and downs for the steely blonde with a marketing degree from the University of Dublin. She got her green card through the lottery and started as a concierge at the Hilton and then sales manager at The Pier House. But her luck waned when diagnosed with breast cancer after her son was born. Still that didn’t stop her from pursuing and building her real estate career. Now a cancer survivor, Moore looks at life with a winning attitude. “I am really competitive, I will raise the most money (more than $80,000 and counting),” said Moore about helping American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Cancer and The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. She is also a trustee with the Klaus Murphy Foundation, which assists the needy and distressed in Key West and Stock Island. Now Moore is tapping into her inherent determination, taking the reigns as president of the chamber, armed with ideas and visionary goals. Expect her adventurous spirit, tenacity and bit of Irish luck to make things happen.

What is your nerdiest passion? Potted plants.

What is your most treasured possession?

Nothing tangible, but I treasure my memories of growing up in Ireland.

If invisible, what would you do in Key West? Visit all the art galleries and not be harassed by a salesperson.

What is your greatest fear? Roller coasters.

Favorite guilty pleasure? A great cabernet, Cadbury’s chocolate and Dubliner Cheese, in that order!

On what occasion do you lie? When someone wants to know how much I weigh!

Worst nickname? SUEEEEE — My nieces call me that and it drives me crazy!

Do you have a life credo or motto? “If you can dream it, then you can do it.”

What is the chamber of commerce’s role in Key West? The chamber has played an important role in our community over the years. It represents many of our small business owners and gives them a voice to the issues that face our community. The chamber provides many educational seminars to the members, offers an array of scholarships to our local students and provides a wide range of resources to our members and our tourists.

What would be your dream job, other than the one you have? Be a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue department store in New York City.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Serena Williams.

WESLEY HOUSE FAMILY SERVICES Wesley House’s mission is to promote and enhance the safety, well-being and development of children by educating, supporting and meeting the needs of families. Its roots date back to the beginning of the 1900s as a program to help Cuban-speaking kindergartners learn English and transition into public school easier. In the mid-1940s, the nonprofit started focusing on professional childcare for working parents, opening the Inez Martin Childcare Center in Key West in 1971. COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE FLORIDA KEYS Established in 1996, the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys’ goal is to make the Florida Keys a better place to live now and in the future, by encouraging philanthropy and matching acts of caring to community needs. The nonprofit is known for strengthening other local nonprofits.

After Hurricane Irma, it started a Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund, which funded service organizations throughout Monroe County. The organization also holds the annual Unsung Heroes luncheon, the next of which will take place Jan. 26 at Key West Marriott Beachside. www.cffk.org

UNITED WAY OF THE FLORIDA KEYS Touted as the leader in community caring, United Way of the Florida Keys advocates for increased social consciousness while actively fighting for strong working families in the Florida Keys. The local organization does campaigns that include Stuff the Bus before students return to school; Imagination Library, which gives families access to books; Summer Literacy Kits for Kids, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, childcare scholarships, and the ALICE community impact report. The organization also partners with other community-minded organizations to help out residents in need. After Hurricane Irma, United Way of the Florida Keys also donated grocery store gift cards in the hardest hit areas, and financially helped those in need after the storm. www.keysunitedway.org

Fair Insurance Rates Monroe County is a grassroots organization that started in 2006 to fight for property owners’ rights in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. In addition to advocacy, the group keeps the community in the know with events like flood mitigation workshops. The next events take place Jan. 16 in Marathon, Jan. 17 in Key Largo, and Jan. 18 in Key West. The group, which has 3,700 members and is free to join, has a monthly e-newsletter to keep members upto-date with flood and wind news. www.firmkeys.org

For more than 30 years, the Visiting Nurses Association/Hospice has been supporting families with in-home healthcare, palliative care, and hospice care needs in the Florida Keys.

AMERICAN RED CROSS OF GREATER MIAMI AND THE FLORIDA KEYS The American Red Cross doled out needed financial aid to 24,000 Keys residents, more than a million bulk items and had more than 7,000 volunteers in the wake of Hurricane Irma. While helping with hurricane disaster relief in the Keys, the organization is also vital for blood donation, CPR training, and services for people who experience other disasters like home fires. The American Red Cross Gala takes place Jan. 24 at Key West Marriott Beachside, honoring philanthropist Kate Miano as Humanitarian of the Year. www.redcross.org

MONROE COUNTY EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The goal of Florida Keys Children’s Shelter is to provide safety to children, create strong families, and keep a healthy community. Programs include an emergency shelter in Tavernier, a group home for children in Key West, and Project Lighthouse, a drop-in center in Key West for runaway, at-risk, or homeless youths.

Placement can be short- or longterm. After Hurricane Irma, the center also opened up beds for children who had nowhere to sleep. The annual Mayor’s Ball, which takes place in January at the Casa Marina in Key West, is one of the major fundraisers for the shelter. www.fkcs.org

Established in 1996, the nonprofit is dedicated to improving educational experiences for students in Monroe County. The organization provides financial support and sponsors several programs to broaden student educational experiences. The organization supports Take Stock in Children, Experiment in International Living, leadership training for students, and financial incentives for students who complete Monroe Computes.

REEF RELIEF Reef Relief began in 1987 with the intention of saving the coral reefs.

Since then, it has led a buoy installation project protecting seven different reefs and led reef conservation efforts all over the Caribbean. Reef Relief helped to establish the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary and is a major proponent of the Clean Water Campaign

throughout the Keys. It serves to educate the public on nearshore waters, strengthen grassroots community-based efforts to protect coral reefs, and support sustainable eco-tourism. It also provides Coral Camp, which teaches children the benefits of oceanic conservation.

THE CANCER FOUNDATION OF THE FLORIDA KEYS Founded in 1998, The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys proudly says “What we raise, stays” meaning 100 percent of donations stay to help Florida Keys cancer patients. The foundation offers assistance to qualified cancer patients while undergoing treatment who need education or financial resources when other assistance has been denied or exhausted. It also promotes early detection and provides screenings for prostate, breast, skin, and colorectal cancer.

The thrift stores in Big Pine Key and Key Largo aren’t operational yet due to Hurricane Irma damage, but the Key West store is able to periodically take donations – those donations are then distributed throughout the Keys. As presstime, a command center is set up in Big Pine Key for food and clothing. Salvation Army has been helping in hard hit areas since two days post-storm. The staff has stayed on the payroll through the disaster relief program and has been working to get the stores operational. Apart from storm situations, the Salvation Army provides services, food, and clothing to those in need regardless of disaster situations. Ways you can help during the holidays: be a bell ringer.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS FLORIDA – MONROE COUNTY Special Olympics Florida Monroe County hosts competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for the intellectually or developmentally disabled. The organization provides coaches and training yearround to help develop physical fitness.

t’s the most hopeful of sayings: “Behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining.” Who would know it better than the women who work in the clouds? Back in 1954, a group of retired Eastern Airline stewardesses came together in New York City and decided they could create a few silver linings for some needy children.

While Eastern Airlines may be gone, the former flight attendants and the Silverliner Organization is still helping children around the world after six decades, even in the Keys.

Former Eastern flight attendants Joyce Benavides, president, and Bindy Blatt, vice president, run the local chapter of the Silverliners and host the annual national event “Flight To the North Pole” at the Key West Airport.

The Silverliner event started in the ’50s to help children with special needs, providing them Christmas presents and a special “fantasy flight” at an airport. Now in its 37th year, the Key West event – scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5 – involves hundreds of children ages 3-5 and provides special holiday fun and gifts for local kids.

“It’s up to 650 kids,” said Benavides. “This is the biggest event for kids from Big Pine to Key West.” The Silverliners invite schools to come to EYW to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus (now in memory of Mo and Marina Mosher, who infamously played those roles for years until their passing), the Fire Department, the Animal Farm, the

Sheriff’s Department, the Mounted Police and the Coast Guard. There are games, activities, a puppet show and lunch, donated by The Conch Flyer.

The day ends with a hopping singalong with Howard Livingston and a spot on Santa’s lap. It’s a magical day for the kids and they get to leave with a present. But, fair warning, this event is not open to the public and parents are only invited as chaperones with the class.

“We raise about $10,000 to $12,000 all year long to put on the event,” said Blatt, who personally oversees shopping for all the toys. “Fantasy Flight is our big hurrah but really we think about the kids all year.” The Key West Silverliners never take off their elf hats, quietly providing for many local children with various needs.

The organization has sponsored five classrooms, bought iPads for learning, and caps and gowns for high schoolers who couldn’t afford them. If a child has a special request, they try to help.

“Every buck adds up and goes back to the children of Key West,” said Blatt, who credits the many locals who help the Silverliners: MJ Webster, Letisia Powell, Denise Rohrer, Mary Maxwell, Rita Rogers, Jane Brannigan, Howard and Cindy Livingston and teachers Kelli Niles, Amy Donaldson and Catherine Kanagy, and all of Santa’s helpers.

quare Grouper bartender Lenore Baker used to spend her weekends relaxing on the boat at offshore sandbars – that is, until Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc on her island home. After months of not seeing anything get done, she took matters into her own hands. “I started waking up in the middle of the night having nightmares about trash piles,” she said.

She was seriously tired of looking at it and worried about the health of the nearshore waters, “So I put on Facebook that I was going to start cleaning from this point to that point and if you want to join me, come on.”

The first week, 17 people showed up.

Last weekend, 35 came out and collected 15,000 pounds of debris. “Imagine what we could do with 100 people,” she said.

Three members of the Key West Rotary showed up last weekend to help and donated gloves to the cause. “We might even have a few trailers this week to take the debris straight to the dump, rather than piling it on the side of the road,” she said.

Lower Keys construction companies Pinewood and Botsford were quick to help out, donating time, equipment and dump trucks for the cleanup efforts.

2 Chris Thommes of Pinewood said he’s disappointed in the amount of trash on the side of the roads and in the mangroves. “Lenore called me and asked me to help out, and it’s a good cause and needs to be done,” he said.

Since the cleanups started, Baker and those who have come out to help, have cleaned Big Pine Key from Breezy Pines Estates to the Pine Channel Bridges … on both side of U.S. 1. On Sunday, they are tackling Summerland Key. “It’s a group effort,” she said. “We are all in this together.”

Not shy of calling out the Board of County Commissioners and the governor, Baker said she will continue clean-

3 ing every weekend until the islands look beautiful again. “But, can we at least get them to pick up the piles we are making?

WANT TO JOIN THE CLEANUPS? Lenore Baker will have her black Tahoe parked in front of Sea Boots on Summerland Key from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Dec. 3. Come for an hour, or for the whole time. She said she will be cleaning, but to help yourself to waters, gloves, and trash bags. She will be concentrating on the southbound side of the street.

“This is a self-starter kind of thing,” she said. “Pick a spot and just start cleaning.”

A like-minded group of cleaners will also be doing a cleanup on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. on Cudjoe Key. Volunteer cleaners tackled areas on the Torches and Ramrod keys and a group has also organized in Key Largo.

If you have trash bags, waters, and gloves, it will save time to bring your own and be able to jump right into helping.

The new “Sunset Green Event Lawn,” nestled between 24 North and The Gates hotels (all part of The Keys Collection), have announced their newly sodded, open air venue will host the legendary Michael McDonald on February 28.

“This will be unlike any other concert venue around,” said Lee Sheehan, director of sales and marketing for the Keys Collection. “You have the larger theaters in Miami. There is the intimacy of the Key West Theater. And now you will have amazing acts under the stars, with open air and high energy right here at home.”

However, booking a five-time Grammy winner such as McDonald — who sang backing vocals for Steely Dan, was with the Doobie Brothers for many years and has had a long solo career — is no easy task. To do so, the hotel group has partnered with Rams Head Group, which is responsible for many of the marquee performers headlining the Key West Theater over the past several years. And the two say this is just the beginning of what appears to be an incredible lineup of upcoming acts.

“I get excited because it’s a differ-

ent feel,” said Kelly Norman, marketing and production coordinator for Rams Head Promotions. “We are solely bringing in the artist from a production standpoint. But this outdoor venue allows for an energetic show with a completely different experience.”

The collaboration between the Keys Collection and Rams Head is nothing new. The two have partnered in the past, with the Key West Theater using The Gates Hotel for an array of functions such as housing performers to hosting VIP meet-and-greets.

“The capacity of the Greens opens us up to a certain tier of music and entertainers,” said Norman. “With a capacity of 278 seats at the Key West Theater, we have been able to boast some incredible names in an extremely intimate setting. But I think people will be amazed at who we will be bringing into Key West at this dynamic venue.”

Note: Michael McDonald will not be the first event at the newly constructed Sunset Green Event Lawn. The official opening takes place on Saturday, Dec. 30 with their “Flip-flops and Fireworks” event featuring the band Fuel on Fire. The venue will also be available for weddings, festivals and other events.
