School Board starts work on housing plan for the Lower Keys GABRIEL SANCHEZ

n Nov. 14, the Monroe County Board met to discuss, among other things, the formation a Sugarloaf housing tasking force.

Superintendent Mark Porter started the discussion by introducing of the members of the employee housing task force at Sugarloaf School. The group includes Porter as facilitator; Niels Hubbell, senior director of strategic planning for Monroe County; Kimberly Matthews, Sugarloaf kindergarten teacher; Rachel Quad and Jenny O’Brien, also of Sugarloaf School; and Holly Hummell-Gorman, president of United Teachers of Monroe. Dirk Smits, the school district’s legal counsel, is an ad hoc member.

Ultimately, Porter pointed to land use and feasibility as the main issues for figuring out a timeline for when the proposed 10 to 20 workforce units could be completed.

Board member Andy Griffiths added that an important consideration when submitting applications for amendments to future land use maps is doing so before the Department of Economic Opportunity semiannual meetings.

Porter noted that the authority of the task force is to make recommendations.

“We’re simply looking for a resource to come back and make a recommendation; it’s not a binding recommendation,” said Porter. “The board still has the full authority to do anything they might want to do in terms of proceeding.”

The impetus in forming the group is in part due to the current housing situation, says Porter.

“We’re not going to be able to solve anyone’s short-term housing problems from the result of the current hurricane situation. But perhaps if we move down this path we can give them some indication of what might be there for them and others in the future.”

Ultimately the group’s efforts are meant to be “small in scope, small in numbers, and short in timeline,” said Porter.

Board members then talked about the county level regulations and a possible waiver of fees from the county.

While raising the issue of land use at Sugarloaf, the board also discussed the use of Trumbo Point.

In conveying the urgency of the need for housing, Bobby Highsmith, vice chairman of the board, ultimately requested completion of the projects parameters by Jan. 31.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, former school board member Capt. Ed Davidson discussed the efforts of the previous board to address the issue of workforce housing.

“Most of the controversy and acrimony that has recently erupted was really unnecessary because most of the issues – in fact every issue brought up here – has been already been processed. It’s been thoroughly studied and the options extensively analyzed for more than a year by a Keys-wide affordable workforce housing committee.”

Davidson ended his comments by recommending the board not think of itself as a “bureaucratic agency,” but rather as a developer.

The superintendent’s task force will have its first meeting on Thursday, Nov. 16.

Tampa school brings equipment to Florida Keys

n Wednesday, students and staff from Carrollwood Day School in Tampa brought a large SUV, brimming with equipment, to the Marathon High School. Baseballs, softballs, cleats, bags, hitting nets, gloves and more were carried inside by players from both teams. It was a joint effort by the coaching staff of both schools.

“Every couple of years we make a trip to the Keys to play against the three high schools,” said Ken Akins of Carrollwood. “When we heard about the storm’s effect on the Keys, we knew we had to do something.”

Carrollwood, the baseball coach, and Kim Coffin, the softball coach, reached out to the players’ parents for donations. One particular school parent was incredibly helpful, a former major league baseball player. He contacted industry reps for more donations.

Coffin encouraged the players to friend each other on social media. Coffin, who also heads a travel softball team, told them to reach out if anything else is needed. Marathon High School coach Kevin Freeman assured the Carrollwood players they would meet again — in the final four.

“The baseball community is very tight-knit,” said Akins. “In Tampa we look after each other. Now, it’s our turn to help the Keys. It is the person-to-person connection that makes it so special.”

Meagan “Maggie” Sayer just received her sixth Best of Marathon award for her family photography. From baby’s first picture to family Christmas cards, she’s done it all when it comes to taking pics of local kids and families as they grow. In many instances, like the recent Harvest Festival at Crane Point Museum, she donates the proceeds of her photo sessions to the cause.

Born in Key West, raised in Marathon, Sayer is a proud product of Sue Moore, Stanley Switlik and Marathon High School. She received her BA from Elon University in elementary and special education.

“I decided my senior year that I didn’t want to teach,” she said. “Oops.”

She later received an MBA in information security management from Saint Leo University and is currently working on her second master’s degree in cybersecurity. Now, she’s a cybersecurity consultant and the IT director for Keys Federal Credit Union, satisfies her passion for photography on the side, and is a professor at Florida Keys Community College.

She met her wife, MP, in 1999 and they have two sons — Fisher and Cullen.

Here’s Maggie: Post Irma, how many loads of laundry did you do for friends? None. I just did the drop off and pickup. I do “other” things and laundry isn’t usually one of them. I’m told I don’t fold right, or something. (Editor’s note: Maggie and her mom Ginger “Suga” Sayer and the family washed EVERYONE’S dirty undies for those without water or washers …)

What brought you back to the Keys after college? The ocean. I felt claustrophobic in North Carolina.

Describe the best photo you’ve ever taken: The boys walking out to the water on Smathers Beach. I took a pretty cool one during last year’s bridge run from the helicopter, too.

Speaking of the 7 Mile Bridge Run, how long have you been involved?

I have always been involved; my mom and dad were part of the Runner’s Club in 1982 when it was founded (our home phone number was the informational number that year), but I became more heavily involved in 2012 when we moved to electronic registration.

And triathlons? I’ve done about 20.

My most recent was a half Ironman in April. I got involved after watching my cousins compete in Kona and then tried my first one with my mom in 2011 in Minnesota.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating … who walks in and sits next to you? Provided MP is already sitting next to me, Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski. I’d love to pick his brain about leadership and his success on and off the court.

Favorite memory from Marathon High School? Definitely a sports-related memory, probably my last softball game when I hit four home runs.

Best advice as a mom of two boys?

Buy in bulk.

Best piece of advice you ever received? “Meet it, Fix it, Forget it.” Meet the problem, fix the problem, then move on. My parents taught me that.

What is your nerdiest passion? All of my passions are nerdy.

If you could take one item on a deserted island … They make a satellite iPhone, right?

What was your first thought this morning? Is today the day I’m going to give up espresso?

Favorite guilty pleasure? ’80s music, ’80s movies, legal TV shows and bacon.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do/buy? Pay off my house, then travel. Costa Rica, Colombia, New Zealand. I have a list!

If you could change the world, what would you do?

Solve global warming.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to? Or, lived? I loved the home I grew up in enough to later buy it. Australia was my favorite travel destination. But our cabin property on a lake in Minnesota is my annual highlight.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A doctor, a lawyer, a judge, then a teacher.

I’m still trying to figure it out.

My wife, M.P., would describe me as … hard working, but messy.

My autobiography would be titled … “What’s next? My journey through a chaotic life full of family, choices, change and bacon!”

FLOAT THERAPY Experience the bliss and healing of weightlessness SARA MATTHIS

ictorian-era physicians would send their “incurable” cases to the seaside.

Certainly, in modern times many extoll the healing virtues of our Keys ocean. But there’s something better — float therapy.

I experienced it at Marathon Acupuncture & Float Therapy this past week and I can say it is truly one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had.

“I’ve wanted to offer this service for so long,” said Angela Marcey Roth, “especially for those seeking pain relief who want a healthier option than taking pharmaceuticals in perpetuity. And so many people won’t get anywhere near a needle, and now I can offer them this.”

Individual experiences will vary — some will feel the stress melt away, others will find relief for aches and pains. Or, more likely, some combination of the two.

Clients who come regularly will find they relax more easily.

The first and most immediate take away is the absolute luxurious bliss of weightlessness. This is as close as regular humans can come to the ethereality experienced by astronauts in space. Put it this way — when I lie down at the end of a long day it feels good … but I still feel the pressure on my shoulders, my heels. And, unlike floating in the ocean, where there’s some movement required to stabilize or keep from sinking, there is none required in float therapy. The1,300 pounds of Epsom salts in 250 gallons of water means I could stretch my arms above my head, put my hands palm down or palm up, even cross my ankles and still float like a buoy. As the session goes on, the desire to move — at all — fades away.

“The solution allows sensory receptors on the skin to shut down creating a decrease in sensory feedback from body to brain,” said Roth.

“About 90 percent of the feedback stops.” She said floats also help flush lactic acid and toxins from the body.

WHAT’S THE FLOAT LIKE? The experience starts with a long shower in a spa-like setting. The idea is to remove all of the impurities that could contaminate the tank. Then floaters enter the tank “starkers.” (That eliminates the laundry or detergent chemicals imbedded in our bathing suits.)

The tank is entered through a regular glass shower door. The tank itself is about the size and shape of a queen size bed, and just as deep. A sloped ceiling — about 5 feet tall at one end and 2 feet tall at the other — encloses the space. There is ambient lighting that can be customized, and clients can pipe in their own music via underwater speakers from a smartphone on a hook outside.

Clients float until signaled with a light that it’s time to get out.

Questions? An intercom in the tank allows clients to reach “the outside.” A shower on the way out and Voilà … you feel like a whole new person.

Roth said her clients seek it out for a variety of reasons. One patient uses it to treat sciatic nerve pain and found relief for two entire weeks. Others use it to relax.

I signed up for a 30-minute float and was a little worried about my ability to “do nothing” for that long. Let me tell you, the time flew by. Actually, there was no sensation of time. I went in, floated, and I got out with about as much awareness of time passage as it took you to read this sentence.

STOCKTON TO LEAD UNITED WAY Agency seeks tax prep help, partners with builders group

L

eah Stockton will take the role of president and CEO of United Way of the Florida Keys.

Stockton replaces Kate Bauer-Jones, who resigned after suffering Hurricane Irma-related damage to her home.

Stockton has a background in nonprofits and is an established member of the Keys community, having lived in Key West for more than a decade.

She has worked with the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition for the last seven years, serving families in Monroe County as program coordinator and community liaison.

While at Berry College in Georgia, Stockton served as lead for several community organizations, including president of the Habitat for Humanity chapter, and coordinator for two hurricane relief teams traveling to Florida.

She then moved to Key West where she worked in the hospitality industry for several years.

Stockton said she is “looking forward to the opportunity of working with such a strong local organization as United Way of the Florida Keys.” She said her work will “focus on families in the community, with the most immediate need being to assist those who suffered losses during Hurricane Irma.” She praised Bauer-Jones for doing “such remarkable work growing United Way’s impact and presence throughout the Keys.”

TAX PREPARATION VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT The United Way of the Florida Keys is looking for volunteers to train for the free tax preparation program known as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

Previous tax experience is not required. Volunteer roles include greeters and reviewers as well as tax preparers. A hands-on training will be scheduled in the next few weeks to familiarize volunteers with procedures.

Volunteers can work as much or as little as they choose. A schedule of tax preparation sites and dates will be issued in early January and all clients will have an appointment time to avoid long waits.

The program is provided to families with an income of $54,000 or less.

Returns can include Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, Education Credits and Dependent Care Credit.

There is no charge to the recipient for this service.

eadership Monroe’s class of XXVI almost wasn’t.

Originally scheduled to begin in October, the class was nearly derailed by Hurricane Irma. But the leadership of Leadership Monroe, through Herculean effort, re-imagined the program starting with the tourism segment Nov. 3-4 in Key West (above) and the Everglades environment this past weekend.

And, all 22 students elected to move forward despite the personal and community hardships the people of the Keys are facing. Leadership Monroe County is aimed at residents who are active in leadership roles within the private sector, government, or community organizations. Through a series of one-, two-, or threeday sessions over many months, participants examine fundamental public and private segments throughout the county to inform and help them make quality leadership decisions which they can incorporate into their respective companies and organizations. Leadership Monroe County is an independent non-profit, governed by a 17-member board. CFFK awards more than $480,000 The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) is providing an additional $480,650 to relief efforts in the Keys following Hurricane Irma. So far, CFFK has provided nearly $620,000 from the Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund and the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund for the Upper Keys, to support relief for individuals from Key West to Key Largo.

The $480,650 in grants supports 35 nonprofits providing direct assistance to foster children, families, students and teachers, police officers, commercial fishers, veterans and other individuals throughout the Keys. The grants provide temporary housing, rent, mortgage and utilities assistance, food, clothing, household supplies, medical care, counseling, daycare services, home repairs, rebuilding efforts, and more.

CFFK Chair Susanne Woods said the grants help hundreds of individuals, families and businesses. “We’re grateful for the incredible generosity of so many people and businesses around the country that contributed to the Relief Fund,” she said.

Community advisory committees representing areas of the Keys (Key West, Lower, Middle and Upper Keys) reviewed all applications to determine how best to meet the local area’s needs. Top ways movies predicted the future

Hollywood can sometimes be prophetic, with scripts and films that often tell the future (or plant the seeds) for actual events. With the Key West Film Festival kicking off this week, the Weekly examined some of our favorite Nostradamus movies out of Tinseltown. And while KITT the talking Pontiac from Knight Rider has yet to appear, a lot of uncanny and spooky revelations have come true after hitting the screen.

1. In 2000, The Simpsons’ season 11, episode “Bart to the Future” predicted Donald Trump’s presidency some 16 years later.

2. “You’ve Got Mail” (1998) introduced online dating with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The two chatted via email about nothing and yet fell in love. Eat your heart out, ChristianMingle.

3. The book “1984” was written by George Orwell in 1949, made into movies in 1956 and 1984, and its premise was a world ruled by a totalitarian government. Big Brother controlled the masses with distractions such as wars. Fast forward to today, with cameras on every street corner and decades of ongoing military conflicts.

4. “Executive Decision” is a 1996 action hit starring Kurt Russell and containing the spookiest plot.

Roughly five years before 9/11, the movie’s premise had terrorists hijacking a plane with plans to use it as a weapon during a planned suicide mission. Yikes.

5. “Airplane II: The Sequel” (not as funny as the original) had fullanimated body scanners at the airport. Hint: they magically only worked on women. Full body scanners didn’t actually happen until 2013; luckily they aren’t as revealing as they were in 1982 (RIP Lloyd Bridges).

6. “WarGames” (1983), starring Matthew Broderick, gave us our first taste of cyber warfare. Greetings, Professor Falken, shall we play a game?

7. “Bladerunner,” the original in 1982, showed the world the first digital billboards. Something we still could do without.

8. “2001: A Space Odyssey,” released in 1968, had an intelligent, talking computer named H.A.L. 9000. Now there is Siri. Wonder if the two are related?

9. “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” in 1979 (along with the TV series which originated in 1966) pre-fabricated a whole list of technology compiled by Quartz website including: Tablet communicators, voiceinteraction computers, Bluetooth headsets, portable computer memory, ultrasound technology, biometric data tracking, cloaking devices, GPS, automatic doors, big screen displays, teleconferencing, bionic eyes, and diagnostic beds. No warp drive yet. Bummer.

And imagine being beamed from New Town to Old Town without the crosswalks to worry about.

10. “Face/Off” (1997), starring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage, included the first surgical face transplant. In real life, the first successful partial face transplant did not happen until 2005 in France, and the first full transplant happened in Spain five years later.

he first order of business at the Marathon City Council meeting: elect Michelle Coldiron as the new mayor and John Bartus as the vice mayor. After the most recent election, the council decided to approach naming the city’s “top spot” in a different manner. Previously, the council debated and voted at a public meeting. Now, there is a resolution that suggests a specific order to determine the mayor — length of service and, if two council members were elected on the same day, number of votes.

The intent was to de-politicize the process of electing a mayor. However, some argue that not everyone is qualified or wants to be the mayor.

The votes for mayor and vice mayor were both 4-1, with Councilman Mark Senmartin voting “no.”

“I’m voting ‘no’ in protest. I don’t agree with the system,” said Senmartin, who also voted against the resolution when it was put in place.

Other news: • Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey updated the council about the debris yet to be collected along the U.S. 1 right-of-way.

“The state Department of Transportation has told us verbally that they will not pick up any more debris along the highway,” he said. “I need that in writing.”

Lindsey said once he has the letter, he will then apply to FEMA for reimbursement should the city become responsible for that debris.

FDOT has not formally said why it would not assume this responsibility, but it was suggested at the meeting that the agency ran through its emergency fund taking care of other parts of the Keys.

“Since it’s not city property, there’s a question whether it’s eligible for FEMA reimbursement,” Lindsey said. “I don’t want to pick it up now, and then have FDOT change its mind and take care of everyone else except Marathon. But the highway is the ‘face’ of Marathon. We need to do it right, and we need to do it quick.”

Lindsey told the council that 85 percent of the debris collection is complete in Marathon. And of that 85 percent, almost all of it has already been trucked to the mainland. It is still exploring options on how to reduce the vegetative debris.

Burning, which has a success rate of about 97 percent, is out. The city is considering grinding the material, which has a 4-to-1 reduction rate.

In light of all of the upfront expenses associated with Hurricane Irma that are supposed to be reimbursed by FEMA, the city is cutting its spending. Staff has agreed to forgo raises for six months and the city will not fund nonprofits this fiscal year. Typically, it gives out $90,000 to a handful of applicants.

“It’s my recommendation, but I don’t like it,” said Lindsey. “But these are belt-tightening measures … until we get a better handle on our financial situation.”

• About 1,200 permits associated with Hurricane Irma have been issued by the City of Marathon.

(Some addresses have multiple permits, for electrical, plumbing, etc.) The city has waived $360,000 in permit fees, respesenting about $18 million in improvements. The fees are set to resume again on Dec. 1.

Also, businesses will be required to take down spray-painted wooden signs by Dec. 1.

• The city is considering how to stage, or phase, improvements to Sombrero Beach. The sod may not be replaced until sometime next year, and it’s possible there will be more beach area with the dunes recreated further back toward the road. The west end of the beach may open in as little as two weeks.

GROWING AGAIN Marathon Garden Club’s bazaar will go on!

or a gardener, having an entire space destroyed in just a few hours is heartbreaking. About the only part of the Marathon Garden Club that survived Hurricane Irma is the slightly elevated show garden, right at the entrance to the club building.

“It’s a little thing, we know.

Some people lost their homes and belongings,” said Patti Trefry of the Marathon Garden Club. The club suffered serious damage — trees down, fences wrecked, shrubs drowned. “Still, we want to put it back together. This nonprofit has a thriving membership and scholarship program.”

The 130 members of the club are digging in, literally. Every Thursday, a team meets to bring order. The gift shop will reopen on Friday, Nov. 17.

The big push is to be “ready” for the annual holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Club president Scarlett Duffy said the club is looking for bazaar shoppers as well as donations of cash to buy plants not only to restore the garden, but also to support the nursery so the club can become self-sustaining again.

“We are applying for grants as well,” Duffy said. “The fence, alone, will cost thousands to replace.”

As usual, the club will be selling native plants, fruit trees, palms, bromeliads and “coontie” — the last is a cross between a fern and a palm in a shrub-like presentation.

The bazaar will also feature some gift items like gently used Christmas decorations.

As the master gardeners work to get the space in order, the garden is already showing signs of new life.

“Nature always finds a way,” said club member Judy Shaw.

The Marathon Garden Club was established in 1955.

Okay, maybe maimed. But still. Like the time the rotten Gumbo Limbo almost came crashing down on my head. Or the time I was stabbed in the eye by a particularly vicious thatch palm.

(I sat up all night, leaking eyeball fluid, and re-ordering my life as a half-blind woman.) I healed from that and managed to live through a cottonmouth moccasin bite that I am squarely blaming on the flora, not the fauna.

Which brings me to the poisonwood.

I worked in that yard for 17 years with nary an issue. My husband warned me over and over again but I didn’t listen. I announced myself immune to poisonwood and that was absolutely true … until it wasn’t. I broke out. The itch lasted for weeks. My husband laughed. To be clear, it’s my husband with the green thumb, and the hardwood hammock loves him. He mixes his

own dirt; I didn’t even know that was a thing.

So, during post-Irma cleanup, I was worried about the snakes (didn’t see one), chainsaw accidents (lucky there) and the poisonwood. Over and over again, I returned to the one tree in the corner that I KNEW was poisonwood. I would look at that tree, and then run back to the other end of the yard to compare it with the mystery tree I had questions about.

Turns out I have two poisonwood trees (one’s a stump, thankyouverymuch) and many, many pigeon plum trees. The thing is, they look kind of similar, especially at the new growth stage, which everything is, after a Category 4 storm.

So the poisonwood is a flowering tree from the cashew family. It produces an irritant related to poison sumac or poison oak and grows abundantly in the Keys. The mature leaf has a waxy sheen and a dark green leaf with yellow ribs on the underside.

(Pro tip: if you get the sap on you, wash it off with soap and water as soon as possible. Right away. Then stock up on Benadryl cream.) The leaves are opposite one another on the stem.

The pigeon plum is entirely delightful. It, too, grows abundantly in the Keys. It too has a waxy leaf BUT the leaves can be light green in shade all the way up to a reddish brown. It produces edible fruit. Pigeons, apparently, like them. And I think the flower smells good, too, but I could be thinking of another tree that is not trying to kill me.

Oh, Irma, you’ve taught me so much.

TOM PETTY’S HOMEROOM Classmate remembers the beginnings in Gainesville It is a long way from the Florida Keys to Gainesville, Florida, especially that very segregated city of 1965. But when I learned of the death of Tom Petty recently, the time and space between these two Florida great places disappeared instantly for me. Why? Because to me Tom Petty was not just an image on a screen or a track on a compact disc. He was not someone “out there” in cyberspace or on a distant stage. To me, Tom Petty was a very real human grown from the fundamentals. From the basics. One of the few great ones who started from nothing and risked everything betting the farm on his own talent. A talent for which he worked so very hard and so very long to obtain. He did not inherit it, that’s for sure. He grew it from thin air through much pain and endurance over many years. He earned dearly every ounce of his fame and fortune.

hat is why I felt saddened that Tom could not enjoy a retirement since he had earned it through such hard work. He had no retirement.

He worked until he dropped a few weeks ago. Just like Al Jarreau did last year. In effect, both died at their desks. But that’s what the great ones do.

I know all this because in 1965 I spent one school year doing two things with Tom Petty. One, sitting one seat behind him in homeroom biology class in Gainesville High School and, two, leading a high school garage band which competed against his then just-as-primitive garage band, the Epics. (I don’t even remember the name of my band.)

At school he was known as “Tommy Petty.” Not Tom. Tom and I were never really friends because I was not part of the local Gainesville clique of good old boys. He was. And I left Gainesville after just that one year to head south. But during that year he and I talked about music at times in class, while I observed his band and its performances, basic as the Epics were. And I observed him in particular since there were odd things about him that set him apart.

I never saw him at one of my band’s performances because his band played almost every Friday night somewhere else in Gainesville.

Ours did not. We played mostly at wild U of F Gator frat parties since we did “Louie Louie” so well and almost anything by the Stones. That was our field of crappy performances. The Epics played places like the Legion Hall and the Moose Lodge.

Not good venues either, but they played steady as an inexperienced opening band for several other better bands on the bill.

For a year we occasionally talked about current rock music in biology class at the beginning of the day. Tom always focused on one thing talking to me: The Beatles and their songwriting. He rarely focused on the chord patterns, bass lines or other music tricks Lennon and McCartney were doing at the time.

Rather, Tom repeatedly talked about the lyrics of the Beatles songs, and what they meant, especially what they meant to him. His favorite lyrics were from the great ballad by Lennon, “In My Life” off the album Rubber Soul, which had just been

released that year. And he became fanatical that spring talking about the lyrics in the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer.” Tom was the one who spread it around our homeroom that “Paperback Writer” was actually a song about prostitution. I put the kibosh on that idea. “Come on, girls, that’s nonsense.” They believed me, not him. However, it was Petty’s constant obsession with tearing apart song lyrics that was very strange, especially for a southern good ole boy from the old school.

The other time we would talk music, and actually play around with it, was at Lipham Gridley Music Store over on Gainesville’s mainstreet on Saturdays. All the guys in the bands in Gainesville hung around that music store on Saturdays, talking about the new songs, new bands, new equipment and mostly how they mangled their performances the night before. Tom would show up periodically late in the morning, usually with his band’s lead singer, Jim Lenahan (who would later become his road manager). Lenahan was actually the only good musician in the Epics, on the keyboard, which they did not let him play. So it went with bad garage bands.

Early afternoon on Saturday we would see the older guys from the more established bands come: The Maundy Quintet, formerly known as the Pink Panthers, was the premier Gainesville band of the day. They really were a good band. How do we know this even more today? Because those two older guys in that band he talked to were Bernie Leadon and Don Felder. These two musicians four years later formed the Eagles with Glenn Frey and Don Henley.

Don Felder did that fabulous guitar intro on “Hotel California.” That’s how we know these were good musicians. Tom knew then.

But on those Saturdays I observed Tom invariably engaging Leadon and especially Felder from the Maundy Quintet in talk about guitar chords. Always about guitar chords. Not about the Beatles. Not about lyrics. I received my chord info easily from my books. Tom talked to the Maundy guys about chords instead. They showed him. That was curious. Felder would only rarely talk to me a little about their performances the night before, but never for long and never by name. But

they latched onto Petty directly and taught him much. Felder became Tom’s guitar teacher. I was jealous.

From that early time in 1965 it was clear Tom had the knack of locking onto contacts with the top musicians around, even if they were years older than he. I had no way of making those sorts of contacts. Petty kept those powers of linkage to the great older guys later in life throughout his career, such as his linking up to George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne to form the Traveling Wilburys. I saw that talent of his begin in a music store in 1965 with the guys who would be in four years the Eagles.

My garage band was a cut above terrible. Tom’s group, the Epics, were amateur. My band could hammer out the standards since we had a superior drummer, which is the most important player in a rock band. Lousy drummer, lousy band. And I had superb lead singer who played bass. He could sing Mick Jagger better than Jagger. And I could play the lead licks of “Hang on Sloopy” and “You Really Got Me” perfectly. So we were known on the frat circuit as a decent, but not good, party band. But we thought we were very superior to Tom’s band the Epics. The one time I watched the Epics perform was on a Friday night when we were not playing. The Epics were the opening early evening act of four bands at the Moose Lodge in Gainesville. Some of the high school kids in the crowd we’re calling the band by another name: “The Sundowners.” Whether they had already changed their name was in doubt, but the show they put on was not in doubt.

That night watching the Epics play with Tom Petty was unforgettable. Unforgettably bad. Tom Petty was not the singer or the guitarist.

He was not even the front man for the Epics. He stood in the back and played bass that night. Not even on the microphone. Almost in the dark.

They had only one microphone, and that was dominated by their lead singer Jim Lenahan. A large guy with a deep southern accent at that time which made “Wild Thing” by the Troggs sound primitive. My bandmates and I were giddy about how bad that performance was. The Epics finished their short set with a raucous version of the guitar instrumental “Miserlou.” I was one of the few people clapping, and that was a pity clap.

We walked out of the Moose Lodge laughing with superiority, especially since we were then looking forward to being the lead in band for “Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs” at Big Moose’s Showcase in St. Petersburg. I had no regard at all for the Epics or Tom Petty’s small involvement in that group. Tom’s band was bad. Tom was not good looking then — or at really any time — like, say, Bon Jovi. With his thin blond hair, boney features and buck teeth, was anything but stage ready.

He was not a good guitarist, by any standard. And never would be. He was not a good singer, then for sure, and the Epics did not even let him sing. If there were ever a persona in the music world less likely to make it big, at that time in my mind, it was Tom Petty.

But something happened the next Monday morning in biology homeroom that changed everything.

When Tom wandered into the classroom, several of the girls shouted: “Tom, we loved your song on WGGG!!!!” I was stunned. He had a song on the radio. How did that happen? How did he rate? Getting on Weegee radio in Gainesville, which almost never played the Maundy Quintet’s only 45: “I’m Not Alone.”

And did not play the vaunted Royal Guardsmen from Ocala (yet). But they played Tom Petty. How did this happen? How could he do this?

I asked Tom what song he played on the radio. He said: “Richie, it’s something that I wrote.” Wrote?

He wrote songs? Yes, and WGGG liked his songs better than even that of the Maundy Quintet. They played his songs, which he brought in on a reel of tape, more often than they played the rest, who brought in 45 records. I was stunned. The girls loved his songs. And I had no songs.

I was vanquished by this skinny blond kid with buck teeth. And it would take him 14 more tough years of struggle, including personal bankruptcy, to make the world believe in his songs the way the girls in our biology homeroom did in 1965. But he did it.

And that, my good friends, was what set him apart. Tom Petty could write better songs even at that early age than the rest of them. Better than Leadon and Felder. Better than the Night Crawlers from Daytona Beach. Better than the Tropics from St. Pete. I knew this would not stop at WGGG in Gainesville. And it did not. It would work its way around the world. And so it did.

Sleep well, Tom, you earned it.

‘THE LAST FIVE YEARS’

MCT opens amended season with stage reading

fter Hurricane Irma re-organized Marathon Community Theatre’s 2017-18 season, the first stage piece is ready for this weekend.

Kara Pascucci and Devin Clarke will star in “The Last Five Years” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, Nov. 16-18. It’s a 2002 musical penned

by Jason Robert Brown, made famous by the 2015 movie of the same name starring Anna Hendrick. But get this — the role of Jamie Wellerstein was made famous

by Norbert Leo Butz of “Bloodline” filmed in Islamorada, who just so happens to be playing a benefit concert in Key West this weekend. Wow! “We’ve been trying to get in touch with him to invite him to the show,” said Clarke. (Psst! Norbert, THIS is your invitation.)

Pascucci and Clarke performed “The Last Five Years” three years ago as a reading in the theatre gallery. Now, it’s coming to the main stage and the two are self-directing. It’s an easy role for the two as they have appeared in almost a dozen shows together, plus co-direct the summer theater program for kids every year.

The story centers on a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. Wellerstein tells the story in chronological order, while Hiatt starts at the end and moves backward. The only time the two characters interact is during the wedding song in year three.

“It’s a love story, from the first date to the finale,” said Clarke.

“But it’s honest. Not all relationships work,” said Pascucci.

Clarke said his character is an up-and-coming author whose early success goes to his head a little bit. Pascucci said her character, an aspiring actress who struggles to succeed, has a hard time coming to terms with their very different career paths.

The show, they said, has sad parts, happy parts and funny parts. The contemporary music ranges from rock to Broadway musical styles.

“The Last Five Years” runs Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 16-18 at Marathon Community Theatre. Curtain is at 8 p.m. and tickets are $12 each. To purchase tickets online, visit www.marathontheater.org or call 305-394-1588.

POST-IRMAGEDDON It’s not just buildings that make a community

A

lot has happened since my last column in the Weekly.

Irma visited our islands and left a lot of destruction and heartache in her wake. We’ve had more mass shootings of innocents, including a concert in Las Vegas and a small-town church in Texas. And a true rock and roll legend passed away less than a week after finishing his band’s 40th anniversary tour.

Marathon’s city staff has worked tirelessly to help residents with everything from debris removal to free permits. So many of these heroes are dealing with their own personal devastation stories, yet they keep smiling and keep helping others.

Like any story, there are villains as well. Looters, price gougers, and people who prey upon disaster victims nearly always move in after a storm. I am almost inclined to put some insurance providers in that same category.

As an example, state-run Citizens Insurance has made boatloads of cash from Keys policyholders. From 2000-2010, including the hurricane season of 2005 when four hurricanes directly impacted the Keys, Citizens cleared more the $500 million — a half billion dollars — in clear profits from Monroe County policyholders. I’m sure they made hundreds of millions more in clear profits over the past seven years as well.

Yet when it comes time to make whole those policyholders who suffered windstorm damage, why is it that Citizens seems to nickel and dime everything? Local adjusters and estimaters send their findings back to the “home office,” where desk adjusters look over the information and eventually issue a check, often for a fraction of the amount of actual damage. It’s no wonder attorneys and public adjusters get so much business after a storm in Florida. Insurance companies take our money without an ounce of shame, but often don’t seem to be there when their customers really need help.

Speaking of getting help…

This Saturday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m. at Marathon City Hall, I will moderate a forum where we will try to get help from a variety of people and officials. Representatives from FEMA, SBA, the STEP program, FIRM, and city and county officials will be on hand to answer questions and direct people where they need to go. While many are getting the help they need, some are falling through the cracks.

Rebuilding after a disaster is never easy, but a community isn’t just the buildings and infrastructure — it’s the people and their spirit. We have always come together and remained strong after a storm, and this community spirit will get us through the challenges ahead. ******* Special thanks to all who voted me Best Elected Official and Best Local Celebrity in the Weekly’s recent Best of Marathon event.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma, key members at American Caribbean Real Estate started contacting family and friends to initiate a fund to help with recovery in the Middle and Lower Keys. By starting a gofundme account, soliciting cash donations and the incredible dedication of all of the agents at American Caribbean approximately $30,000 has been raised to date. This has in turn gone out help over 56 individuals and families overcome the destruction and displacement that our Keys community has experienced.
