otta admit, the answers to this week’s chatter were a little surprising.

When it comes to Christmas, there really is only one group of experts: children. They know the ins and outs, from gifts to parades to decoration, and what really is the best cookie, ginger or sugar? So then they should know when the Christmas season should start, right? If you look around, it seems the chain and box stores are starting earlier and earlier and as of right now, Santa’s helpers have already set up the North Pole all over Key West. So we asked the kids…

Is it too early for Christmas decorations and songs before even Thanksgiving?

“Yes,” said Ella Castro. “It shouldn’t even start until the actual month Christmas is in!”

“It’s way too early right now,” said Nalani Labeet. “They should put out the stuff when it is actually Christmas. Now is not Christmas, now is Thanksgiving.”

“At least they could wait until after Thanksgiving,” said Nate Godlewski. “They should be playing Thanksgiving songs, not Christmas songs, right now.”

“Everything should start the week before Christmas,” said Emily Schwartz. “Yep, one week is enough.”

“Wait, when is Christmas again?” asked Kevin Kenny. “Next month? Okay then, they should start December 1st, that would be good.”

School Board starts work on housing plan for the Lower Keys GABRIEL SANCHEZ

n Nov. 14, the Monroe County Board met to discuss, among other things, the formation a Sugarloaf housing tasking force.

Superintendent Mark Porter started the discussion by introducing of the members of the employee housing task force at Sugarloaf School.

The group includes Porter as facilitator; Niels Hubbell, senior director of strategic planning for Monroe County; Kimberly Matthews, Sugarloaf kindergarten teacher; Rachel Quad and Jenny O’Brien, also of Sugarloaf School; and Holly Hummell-Gorman, president of United Teachers of Monroe. Dirk Smits, the school district’s legal counsel, is an ad hoc member.

Ultimately, Porter pointed to land use and feasibility as the main issues for figuring out a timeline for when the proposed 10 to 20 workforce units could be completed.

Board member Andy Griffiths added that an important consideration when submitting applications for amendments to future land use maps is doing so before the Department of Economic Opportunity semi-annual meetings.

Porter noted that the authority of the task force is to make recommendations.

“We’re simply looking for a resource to come back and make a recommendation; it’s not a binding recommendation,” said Porter. “The board still has the full authority to do anything they might want to do in terms of proceeding.”

The impetus in forming the group is in part due to the current housing situation, says Porter.

“We’re not going to be able to solve anyone’s short-term housing problems from the result of the current hurricane situation. But perhaps if we move down this path we can give them some indication of what might be there for them and others in the future.”

Ultimately the group’s efforts are meant to be “small in scope, small in numbers, and short in timeline,” said Porter.

Board members then talked about the county level regulations and a possible waiver of fees from the county.

While raising the issue of land use at Sugarloaf, the board also discussed the use of Trumbo Point.

In conveying the urgency of the need for housing, Bobby Highsmith, vice chairman of the board, ultimately requested completion of the projects parameters by Jan. 31.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, former school board member Capt. Ed Davidson discussed the efforts of the previous board to address the issue of workforce housing.

“Most of the controversy and acrimony that has recently erupted was really unnecessary because most of the issues – in fact every issue brought up here – has been already been processed. It’s been thoroughly studied and the options extensively analyzed for more than a year by a Keys-wide affordable workforce housing committee.”

Davidson ended his comments by recommending the board not think of itself as a “bureaucratic agency,” but rather as a developer.

The superintendent’s task force will have its first meeting on Thursday, Nov. 16.

ey West businessman Danny Hughes announced his intention to seek the open mayor’s seat in the Aug. 28 election.

Hughes and his wife Maura own Two Friends Patio, a historic and popular restaurant in Key West.

A resident of Key West for many years, Hughes currently serves as a member of the Key West Bight Board.

He and Maura have volunteered with St. Mary’s Basilica and the Star of the Sea Mission, Kids Come First, Bahama Village Music Program, and other organizations. He is a former commissioner, then chairman, of the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans, a position appointed by thenLouisiana Gov. Mike Foster.

With a background in numerous construction disciplines and working in environmentally sensitive areas, Hughes said he has the proven leadership to keep Key West moving in a positive direction. He said he understands that the process is as important as the outcome.

“Challenges need to be met headon and with a servant heart,” he said.

“We have more than 60 employees in Key West. Maura and I made the decision early on that our people deserve a safe, stable place to work that includes health insurance and benefits. Key West is evolving, but Key West cannot lose that part of it that makes it magic.

And that magic comes from the people who call Key West home.”

Hughes has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, is a proud father and grandfather, and has been known to play the guitar when a local musician at Two Friends needs a break (or a laugh). Maura and Danny live in the 1892 home they restored on Ann Street with their two fur babies, Stella and Fergie.

“As mayor, I will listen to your needs; I will understand your concerns and draw upon my experience and apply a worthy approach. Then I will answer with appropriate action,” he said.

WHAT AMERICAN RED CROSS DID FOR YOU: • More than 7,000 volunteers helped with Hurricane Irma relief in the Keys – volunteers were housed in a base camp on Big Pine Key to keep valuable space at the limited hotels available for those who lost homes.

• More than one million bulk items, from bug spray to waters, were delivered directly after the storm.

• There were 3,000 people in overnight shelters across the state of Florida.

• 24,000 clients were helped with direct financial aid – thank you for the $125 per person.

The Florence Spottswood Humanitarian award is given annually to an individual or individuals who have worked to make the Keys a better place for everyone.

Miano is very much involved at The Gardens Hotel in Key West, and the community, giving her time serving numerous organizations in multiple capacities.

‘The Jews of Key West’ Launches Nov. 15 HAYS BLINCKMANN

ascinating” describes local author Arlo Haskell’s new book, “The Jews of Key West: Smugglers, Cigar Makers and Revolutionaries (1823-1969).” It’s impossible to understand the full scope of Key West history without reading this book. Shining a light on the Jewish community, Haskell, a Florida native and head of the Literary Seminar, describes how Jews were a vital and integral part of the economic and cultural growth of Key West. Even the remotest history buff can easily read this in-depth, exceedingly well-researched account of how the Jewish community included important leaders and developers of the Southernmost City.

“It’s about how much of this history is so exciting, but also so unknown,” said Haskell, originally commissioned by Susan Savitch, who had the idea for the book six years ago. Once Haskell started, it became an epic journey of research that spanned states and countries. He relied on online research through our local library, the College of Charleston and Harvard Library. Also, Haskell weeded through Cuban memoirs in Spanish, using only names to guide him.

The result is a detailed account of how Jewish men such as Joseph Seidenberg, Pinkus Pohalski and others owned and powered the cigar industry, synonymous with making the industry international and Key West wealthy. Also, little has been written about how Jose Marti, the Cuban revolutionary, collaborated with local Jews for his cause. Marti was even a Jewish scholar, relating to Jews because both Cubans and Jews were persecuted by Spaniards. Lastly, learn how the Jews became smugglers in the 1920s, hiding Jewish aliens exiled to Cuba against immigration quotas. The whole book is dotted with familiar names, like the history of the Wolkowsky family and buildings that are still on Duval Street today.

“The book isn’t about living memories but about a time that hasn’t really been investigated or left out for a more tourist history,” said Haskell. Haskell himself is not Jewish but garnered the support from Congregation B’nai Zion for research and will be doing a reading later this year at the synagogue.

The book is beautifully laid out, with more than 100 full-color images, and delightfully easy to read. Published by Sand Paper Press, the book is available from local booksellers including Books & Books, Key West Island Books, and the Custom House Museum. The retail price is $24. icking off the Waterfront Playhouse’s 78th season is the hilarious and brazen talent of Vicki Roush. Starring in “Triple Threat” with Danny Weathers and Laurie Breakwell, she will be singing a plethora of show tunes either solo or in duets and trios mixed with off-the-cuff comedy. But don’t go just for the songs: Roush’s comedic timing and quick unfiltered wit are immediately apparent. The Michigan native started singing at the age of 2, performed in her first play at 5, and pretty early she realized her ability to upstage people. Roush landed in Key West in 1979, she says, thanks to three hits of Orange Sunshine. “I’m at an age where I can say that now,” said Roush.

“I stayed because I couldn’t afford to leave, so within two days I got a job and a part in a show at the Tennessee Williams Theater.”

Now four decades strong, Roush is an integral part of the theater scene with a show resume too long to list. She doesn’t mind the moniker from her past show, “Diva by The Sea.” As she said of Key West, “Everyone’s a diva, some good and some bad.”

6. Where do you get your sense of humor? That is from my dad. Total smart ass.

8. Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Maude.

Gwirtzman was the first dance choreographer in residence with The Studios last summer and worked with three Key West dancers: Mara Neimanis, Leigh Pujado, and Kyla Piscopink creating short films. He found a connection with Key West and finds many similarities between the elements of dance and all arts.

or 20 years, the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company has been dazzling audiences. And for one night only, dancer and choreographer Daniel Gwirtzman along with two other dancers will be performing at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street on Tuesday, Nov. 21. This is a rare glimpse into two popular dance works acclaimed all over New York stages.

The first work, “Encore,” is a celebratory, entertaining dance ensemble that premiered in 2007. Set to toe-tapping, uplifting jazz numbers, it’s a nod to Hollywood movie music from the Jazz era and familiar moves reminiscent of Fred Astaire. The second, “Affront,” is a newer work from this year and the counterpoint to “Encore.” It is a more contemporary abstract piece that explores the darkness of relationships. “‘Encore’ is straightforward and joyful,” said Gwirtzman, “while ‘Affront’

ollywood can sometimes be prophetic, with scripts and films that often tell the future (or plant the seeds) for actual events. With the Key West Film Festival kicking off this week, the Weekly examined some of our favorite Nostradamus movies out of Tinseltown.

And while KITT the talking Pontiac from Knight Rider has yet to appear, a lot of uncanny and spooky revelations have come true after hitting the screen.

1. In 2000, The Simpsons’ season 11, episode “Bart to the Future” predicted Donald Trump’s Presidency some 16 years later.

5. “Airplane II: The Sequel” (not as funny as the original) had full-animated body scanners at the airport. Hint:

they magically only worked on women.

Full body scanners didn’t actually happen until 2013; luckily they aren’t as revealing as they were in 1982 (RIP Lloyd Bridges).

6. “WarGames” (1983), starring Matthew Broderick, gave us our first taste of cyber warfare. Greetings, Professor Falken, shall we play a game?

7. “Bladerunner,” the original in 1982, showed the world the first digital billboards. Something we still could do without.

8. “2001: A Space Odyssey,” released in 1968, had an intelligent, talking computer named H.A.L. 9000. Now there is Siri. Wonder if the two are related?

9. “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” in 1979 (along with the TV series which originated in 1966) pre-fabricated a whole list of technology compiled by Quartz website including: Tablet communicators, voice-interaction computers, Bluetooth headsets, portable computer memory, ultrasound technology, biometric data tracking, cloaking devices, GPS, automatic doors, big screen displays, teleconferencing, bionic eyes, and diagnostic beds. No warp drive yet. Bummer.

And imagine being beamed from New Town to Old Town without the crosswalks to worry about.

10. “Face/Off” (1997), starring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage, included the first surgical face transplant. In real life, the first successful partial face transplant did not happen until 2005 in France, and the first full transplant happened in Spain five years later.

AS’s Command Chaplain Lt. Scott Mason spoke at the memorial service for our veterans this past Saturday at Bayview Park’s Vietnam Memorial. Before a large crowd of veterans, servicemen and families, Mason spoke eloquently about how the military “carries in their heart the spirit of patriotism.”

Navy veteran Bob DeHaven is one of 158,000 men left out of 16 million who served in World War II and spoke about his experience back in 1945. He even served on the USS Midway famed for making Naval history. The day ended with the annual parade honoring all servicemen in our country.

eadership Monroe’s class of XXVI almost wasn’t. Originally scheduled to begin in October, the class was almost derailed by Hurricane Irma. But the leadership of Leadership Monroe, through Herculean effort, re-imagined the program starting with the tourism segment Nov. 3-4 in Key West (above) and the Everglades environment this past weekend. And, all 22 students elected to move forward despite the personal and community hardships the people of the Keys are facing. Leadership Monroe County is aimed at residents who are active in leadership roles within the private sector, government,

or community organizations. Through a series of one-, two-, or three-day sessions over many months, participants examine fundamental public and private segments throughout the county to inform and help them make quality leadership decisions which they can incorporate into their respective companies and organizations. Leadership Monroe County is an independent non-profit, governed by a 17-member board. Current officers are President Henry Rosenthal, Vice President Sarah Cizmas, Secretary Dianne Weitz, Treasurer Yesenia Ramirez, and Program Coordinator Michael Shields.
