CRIS’ EASEL Art Guild of the Purple Isles dedicates sculpture GABRIEL SANCHEZ

n Saturday, Nov. 18 the public is invited to attend the dedication of the Cris Sandifer Easel at 5 p.m. at the Murray E. Nelson Government and Cultural Center in Key Largo.

Following the passing of Sandifer in January, members of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles decided to remember their friend in a special way. During its yearly Members Judged Art Show in the spring, the guild announced that it would raise money to create a sculpture of an artist’s easel in her memory. The easel will be usable workspace for plein air artists. It was also during the show that Sandifer’s son, Steven Sandifer, presented ribbons to winners on behalf of his mother.

Contributions came pouring in and it took no time to raise the $10,000 needed for Cris’ Easel Fund, said Janice Lee, publicity chair for the guild.

“In all that she did, she never failed to inspire others. For 30 years she loved, taught, served, created, painted and sailed her way through our lives and shared a part of herself with us,” said Lee, adding there was never a doubt in her mind that there would be a public, lasting tribute to her friend. “The idea of the bronze artist‘s easel was born. I am humbled by the response to Cris’s Easel Fund; the enthusiasm and generosity has been overwhelming!

In organizing this tribute I have discovered that it is because of friends and people like Cris that good things happen in the Keys.”

Creators Dwayne and Cindy King, of Old Road Gallery, say the idea behind the piece is a “lone easel waiting for an artist to return.”

“All the pieces were tools and paints, left the way an artist would leave them, waiting for the next painting,” said Dwayne.

The easel adornments include a rag, palette knife, brushes, a lizard climbing up the stand to ‘see what’s happening next,’ and a little bird Cindy hand sculpted.

Next to the easel, a boulder with a plaque will read, “We invite you to reflect on what a beautiful difference one single life has made to both the ARTS and SAILING communities of the Florida Keys.”

The Monroe County Public Works Department engineered the sculpture’s cement base.

Having served as president of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles, started the Connection Project, and chaired the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Sandifer was a big proponent of art in public places. Sandifer also taught painting at Ocean Reef’s Art League and was commodore of the Upper Keys Sailing Club.

Sandifer has a series of six paintings on display at Murray E Nelson Government Center as part of its public art collection. Local administrators, including County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy, are expected to attend.

How one Marine became a fishing guide – and why GABRIEL SANCHEZ

U

pper Keys fishing guide Sergeant Ben Trainer is everything you’d want in a United States Marine. He’s passionate, hardworking, honest, loyal and caring. From 2004 to 2012, Trainer gave the Marine Corps his all.

First he served as a vehicle driver and machinist at Combat Logistics Battalion 15 out of Camp Pendleton before joining the active duty reserves.

Trainer was part of the Marine Corps’ initial push to seize control of the Al Anbar province in western Iraq, and patrolled and fought in some of the most dangerous places in the world – like Ramadi and Fallujah.

His duties alternated month to month, holding security for the Forward Operating Base his battalion occupied, responding instantly if the base was attacked as part of the “quick reaction force,” and conducting convoys along the dangerous roads. But on his first convoy out of Al Taqquadum Air Base, Trainer’s vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED). Marines were killed, and Trainer suffered shrapnel injuries to his face, head, and body.

But that’s not where his story ends. Trainer has recovered, moved to the Keys, and this year started Veteran R&R Fishing Inc. to honor veterans by offering them an unforgettable fishing experience. It’s part of his way to take care of his brothers and sisters in arms. Trainer is also celebrating a recent engagement to Susie Lewis.

How did you meet your fiancé? We met at Founders Park in Islamorada walking our dogs.

Before we knew it, four hours had passed and we haven’t spent a day apart since.

How did you get to the Keys?

After my enlistment I became a sport fishing guide in the Pacific Northwest for the last 10 years.

Having a limited season to primarily summer and fall, I wanted to move to an area I could fish all year and what better place than the sport fishing capital of the world.

Where did you get your love of fishing? My father. My earliest memories I have are fishing with my dad. He made his living on the water. He was a fishing guide and captain most of his life. I fished with him up until he had a stroke a few months ago; he’s currently recovering so we can get him back out on the water.

What’s the best way an American can show gratitude to a veteran? Just thank them and – be patriotic. We just want the support of our neighbors and community.

The Florida Keys are a great place for veterans. We have a lot of great people who love our troops and their country down here in the Keys You’ve shown your grati-

tude for your brothers and sisters in arms by starting Veterans R&R Fishing Inc. How does it operate? We are a nonprofit organization that takes all veterans and active duty service members on 100 percent free fishing adventures and provide accommodations while they stay in the Keys. We also have started to do the same for police officers and firefighters as well.

The amount of positive feedback we are getting is incredible. We started this at the beginning on this year and our guest house has been flooded with veterans and their friends and families nonstop since we started. They were all so thankful for the opportunity as most of them are young families that would never be able to afford a fishing vacation in the Florida Keys.

What are some challenges you face as a veteran in Monroe County?

I’m somewhat new here, so I haven’t really had to face too many challenges, other than the fact that our veterans center doesn’t have a therapist on staff and, as someone who suffers with PTSD, I would have to drive to Miami for an hour session or pay out of pocket.

What do you believe is the most important thing that everyday citizens should understand about young veterans? Most young veterans are selfless. We are your neighbors and friends. Most of us were willing to die for our country, so we are usually more than willing to help our community. Most young veterans right now are also combat veterans so I would want citizens to know that we did it so they didn’t have to.

Which historical military figure would you like to sit down and talk with? Lt. General Chesty Puller because he was one of the hardest Marines to walk the planet (and most decorated too).

Marines are sometimes called Devil Dogs. What’s the story behind that? The Germans called us Tuful Hun because of how hard the Marines fought in Belleau Wood which translates to Devil Dog. What’s your favorite memory of your enlisted career?

Stepping off the plane after my deployment to Iraq. It was a huge sense of accomplishment.

What’s the most patriotic you’ve ever felt? The most patriotic I ever felt was also the most scared I ever felt and that would be standing on the Yellow Foot Prints in Marine Corps Boot Camp.

Becoming a Marine was the proudest moment of my life.

Which Marine affected your life the most? General Mattis, my drill instructors, and my staff sergeant in Iraq, and all my brothers and sisters in the Marines impact my life every day. That’s why we get to sleep in peace at night.

Any advice for future Marines heading to boot camp?

You’re about to get an extended family of Marines who are willing to die for you, so give it your absolute best so they don’t have to.

A decade of reflection from an ‘Iraqi Freedom’ veteran

t’s been said that “every generation has its war.” That so much is true, but I’d add the caveat, “and each depicts it differently.”

The Iraqi Freedom campaign began as a larger-than-life spectacle with “shock and awe,” but as the mainstream media’s coverage died down, its reporting eventually whittled to a lower third banner occasionally listing the day’s dead. Then one day the public had enough. “End the war,” “bring the troops back,” “no blood for oil” were the rally cries.

Yet there we were, America’s fighting force, unfazed (and without choice) to continue chipping away. So we did, until American forces left Iraq in late 2011, the year my five-year term ended. Older generations of veterans have compared the failures of Operation Iraqi Freedom to those of Vietnam – we went, but couldn’t finish the job. It was easier not to think like that, and so I didn’t think about it at all.

Fast forward a couple years to 2014. Life went on. College, friends, booze and sorority girls help. Then one day, during a typical Gabe Sanchez news binge, I read a CNN article about a group calling itself the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or ISIS. The details are too grisly to go into, so suffice it to say that innocent kids in Syria and Iraq were being hurt. My stomach churned reading the article.

Memories of Iraqi children chasing our up-armored conveys rushed back. I can still see them running alongside the vehicles, armed outstretched as we tossed candy, MREs, and soccer balls to them. We’d always feel good about doing that,

because even in a war zone children need the reassurance that it was going to be “ok.” But it wasn’t. Back in 2008, the word among our deployed 30-man crew was that the neighboring mountains of northwestern Iraq had biblical significance. It was there that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to fast for 40 days and 40 nights – and where the devil first approached to tempt him.

It took six years to confirm that the devil did in fact live in that mountainous region – his name was Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS – “was” being the operative word.

Now, as the Syrian Army and Islamic Revolutionary Guard push forward in their final offensive to liberate the Syrian city of Deir ezZor – a short four-hour drive from where my Iraqi experience began – it seems ISIS’ stranglehold on the region is all but released. And while my petty sense of relief pales in comparison to the price that Syrians and Iraqis paid, it’s a start, and maybe the only victory this young warfighter will ever get.

Scott Kirby’s feel-good vibes are well received by those who attend the Garden Club of the Upper Keys Benefit Concert, held at the Murray Nelson Cultural Center on Oct. 28. Many locals came out to support the restoration of the club’s grounds that were severely damaged by Irma, and lend a hand to out-of-work service industry employees. The Frances Tracy Garden Center has been home to the Garden Club since the 1960s. Visitors come from all over to enjoy Garden Walk and Fall Festival, two major fundraising events held each year on the beautiful grounds. The mission of the Garden Club is to foster, promote, develop, protect and conserve the natural beauty of the Upper Keys through education and publicity. CONTRIBUTED

VETERANS DAY On Friday, Nov. 10, the Key Largo American Legion Post 333 will host a Marine Corps birthday party at 6 p.m.

The Veterans Day Ceremony will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11 inside Fire Station 20, 81850 Overseas Hwy., Islamorada. The general public is encouraged and invited to attend. There will also be another ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Murray Nelson Government Center at MM 102, hosted by the Key Largo VFW Post 10211 and American Legion Post 333.

n Nov. 3, the Coral Shores High School boys Cross Country competed in the FHSAA 2A Regional meet, at the Coconut Creek track. While the team of seven runners did not advance to the State Championships, senior Zachery Roth and Junior Zachary Rodriguez individually qualified for the State Championship, having run 19:40.81 and 19:49:02 respectively.

Including Regionals, the boys’ team ran six meets this season.

Three races were canceled due to the storm. That left too much of a gap in training for the Canes to overcome, said Coach Gabriel Suarez.

“It felt like we were coming back and starting over,” said Suarez.

“Throughout the year we try to up the mileage and increase their speed.”

For example, Cole Yeager, one of the team’s runners, shaved about eight minutes off compared to his first race time, said Suarez.

Though the team also faced injuries from two of its top five runners, Suarez said he is proud of the runners who stepped up.

The Hurricane squad is losing four seniors this year, and next year anticipating only two senior runners.

With spots opening up, next year’s squad has the potential to be every bit as good as this year, said Suarez.

“I think track is a great segue.

Also, before summer ends, starting running again. It makes the season easier and makes the running seem easier. They’ll feel less fatigue if they start early,” said Suarez.

Runners from Marathon High School also tackled the track at Coconut Creek, for the FHSAA 1A Regional meet, on Nov. 3.

“Three of our girls – Sarah and Allison Paskiewicz and Alex Pabone – ran great at Regionals, but just

missed advancing with the top 15,” said cross country Head Coach James Murphy. The team had nine girls compete overall.

The boys’ team fared a little better, with Aydan Child finishing second and Jonathan Pitchford finishing third. Overall the boys cross country runners finished third, and advanced to the FHSAA Cross Country State Finals on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

“This is the third year in a row they have advanced,” said Murphy. In his eighth year of coaching, Murphy said he is proud of how the team has responded to adversity this year.

Both teams have run eight meets this season, and while four races were canceled due to the storm, having at least one make it to state competition with diminished training time is impressive, said Murphy.

“Our goal is to get into the top 10 teams. The team is ranked beforehand, and right now we’re somewhere around 13 to 15,” said Murphy.

“They are feeling confident in their abilities, have run the course a couple times, and are trying to break their personal records.”

“I’m hoping to come up top 15 in the state and get a personal record. I was able to get a personal record last year, and I think I have a very good chance of doing it again,” said Pitchford.

Four runners – Logan D’Alessandro, Armando Perez, Child and Pitchford – have tackled the 500-meter course twice before. Last year, the team finished third overall in the State Championships.

“Everyone is going to have the best race they’ve had all year,” said Murphy of the big meet.

Hours extended at Founders Park Starting on Monday, Nov. 6, Founders park extended its hours for limited use. Parking is allowed in the gravel areas around the aquatic center, fitness park, basketball court, tennis courts, marina trailer parking lot and baseball field. Debris pickup for Lower Matecumbe Lower Matecumbe property owners are advised that the final collection of Hurricane Irma debris is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 13.

Residents are asked to place all debris in the right-of-way in front of their homes by Sunday evening, Nov. 12. Debris left on private property will not be collected. On Nov. 4, the Whale Harbor Seafood Buffet hosted a beachside dining experience for the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce, as the group thanked past board members for their service and installed new directors. Prior to living on their 34-foot sailboat the “Aundrea Lynn,” artist Valerie Perreault and her husband, Andy Downs, rented a home adjacent to what would become her new art studio – Portside Studio & Gallery. In those days, Valerie would gaze out of the window seeking inspiration, from a room that overlooked the gallery.

The gallery itself, with its natural wood floors and minimalist touch, is open, fresh and bright. The patio and inviting outdoor area feel like a whimsical garden. It’s the perfect place for an artist to ponder.

But with Irma’s sudden arrival, not only would the gallery’s grand opening be postponed, Perreault’s vessel would face the wrath of turbulent seas.

The two decided to moor the vessel at the Treasure Harbor Marina and waited out the storm. After the worst had passed, Perreault’s first stop wasn’t the boat; it was her studio.

As bad as things could have been, the only damage to the property was the torn-down fence dividing the studio and former residence, something that Perreault says feels symbolic to her now.

The sailboat didn’t fare as well, though, almost sinking during the storm when water rushed into its portholes. Then it almost sank again after the fact, had it not been for a phone call from a neighbor and Andy’s quick thinking.

The two had bought the boat to honor Valerie’s mother’s valiant battle with cancer, and for more than a year leading up to the storm, the sailboat was a reliable home. The boat, she said, symbolizes a dream for the two. They are determined to repair it and christen it Grace, Valerie’s mother’s middle name.

Along with Sandra Attales (who famously graced the Upper Keys Weekly in August) and Suzanne Le Mehaute, Perreault said the trio is excited about the new opening.

Leather mask artist Caroline Guyer, who was originally slated to help launch the gallery, will return next year.

Le Mehaute, who began creating fiber arts two years ago, is a former film photographer who came to love the diligent process of creating. From that same appreciation came her interest in macrame, and eventually other fiber arts.

“I started exploring with weaving. I love to design things, so I get these ideas in my head, and I have to get them out. But because I don’t make sense, this doesn’t make sense,” laughed Le Mehaute. “It’s stressful at times, but I like working with my hands and see it like making a story with yarn.”

Using PhotoShop to sketch her ideas, Le Mehaute then adds color and character to her concepts, before transferring those ideas into fiber. Her five tapestries on display, which vary in size and complexity, are inspired by water. In order of creation: “Turbulence,” her largest piece, followed by “Calm,” “Drifted,” “Renewal,” and finally “Impermanence.”

“The same stages of the series ended up being the stages people lived through after the storm,” she said.

Perreault’s creative background is eclectic and includes printmaking, film, music, visual arts and screenplay writing, which she said became her favorite part of preparing for film festivals.

Her itch to write would intensify, eventually leading her to a workshop by award-winning American poet Gregory Orr. Perreault credits Orr’s encouragement with opening doors for her. Including her year’s writing for the Texas Senate media, Perreault has had several of her poems published and has won awards. Her latest poem will be released by Swamp Ape Review this spring.

Portside Gallery is planning to rotate artists every three months, with each new rotation prompting a fun reception. The gallery also intends to organize poetry readings, book signings, film festivals and theatrical performances.

Classes will be held every other month and will showcase different art forms like printmaking, large canvas works, and typography.

During opening night the gallery will allow 12 people to sign up for their first linocut class. Linocut is a form of wood cut art also known as block printing. Normal gallery hours will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
