CITY STOPS BURNING Debris pile shrinking; appliances get smashed SARA MATTHIS

o far, the City of Marathon has hauled away 350,000 cubic yards of hurricane debris.

“On the evening of Nov. 7, we sent 60 trucks filled with trash to the mainland,” said Doug Lewis, project manager for Grubbs Emergency Services in Marathon. “About three quarters of the debris is already off the island. We are really in the clean-up mode.”

Lewis said the work for the “big” crews — the trucks with self-loading claws — is all but finished.

“Unless another government or municipality needs me, I’m going to start sending my guys home,” he said, adding that it’s a frustrating situation, knowing how much work is still to be done in the Lower Keys. “These guys want to work. They’re anxious to see if there’s anything else we can do.”

In Marathon, the “white” debris is moving, too. Lewis said about 6,000 appliances have been collected and already 4,000 are off-island. They are being compacted before being trucked to the mainland.

“We can smash about 10 appliances into the size of a regular office desk,” he said, adding that it’s particularly unpleasant work in the case of refrigerators. “Before we can smash the refrigerators or freezers, we have to dump out the contents that have been rotting since Sept. 10. That goes into a lined dumpster.” Yeech.

The burn pit at the golf course shut down on Nov. 3. Although the City of Marathon is under order by FEMA to finds ways to reduce the amount of debris, it is reconsidering its options.

“The burning has not been as effective as we hoped. We are currently exploring other reduction options and have ceased burning until further notice,” said City of Marathon Manager Chuck Lindsey.

It’s possible the city may find another location to burn, grind the vegetation, or simply absorb the expense of shipping it to the mainland.

At the height of the debris removal operation, Grubbs was running more than 20 crews, utilizing about 60 trucks. That included about eight “big” self-loading trucks with the claw.

LAST PASS BEGINS The final debris pick-up for City of Marathon residents will begin on Friday, Nov. 10 and is expected to be complete by Nov. 20. The city will not be responsible for any debris placed out after that time. Any remaining debris will be the responsibility of the property owner, and possibly subject to code violations.

Debris materials must be separated. If bagged, the debris must be in a clear plastic bag or it will not be picked up.

To date, the state Department of Transportation has been responsible for all debris pick up along U.S.1. The city is waiting to hear when the next pickup is and will broadcast that information when they have it.

Residents can report illegal dumping by calling the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 305-289-2430 or 305-289-2351.

HELP FROM ABOVE Samaritan’s Purse delivering helpers by the planeload

Samaritan’s Purse is helping the community bounce back faster with the massive amount of volunteers they have brought into the Keys since Hurricane Irma. CONTRIBUTED

amaritan’s Purse Disaster Response will be in town through Nov. 15, and will stay longer if there continues to be need.

“Right now we aren’t getting enough calls to keep our volunteers busy,” said Todd Taylor of the organization on last week.

Two volunteers stopped by The Vineyard Christian Center in Big Pine Key recently to see if anyone had requested help with tree removal or general help getting their homes and property back together, but no one had.

“We can stay through the first of the year if the need is there,” said Taylor. Volunteers are flown in daily from Fort Lauderdale to the Key West Airport. From there, the teams go out into the community to help people.

Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organiza-

tion providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing its religious message. Since Hurricane Irma devastated the Keys, the group has flown in planeloads of volunteers almost every single day, weather permitting, and barring Sundays (although the first three weeks, they helped on Sundays, too!).

The group says a prayer with residents before they start chopping and chain-sawing away, and gives them a Bible, but “we aren’t going to hit anyone over the head with the book,” said Taylor. It also has teams spread from Barbuda to Texas, helping those communities with hurricane clean-up.

It’s an impressive effort of giving.

For example, on Nov. 7 there were

83 Samaritan’s Purse volunteers working in the Keys, 18 of whom were serving on their first day.

Volunteers work an eight-hour day before being flown home again — meaning the day racked up 664 volunteer hours. The crews remove drywall, salvage belongings and clean up yards. They work at homes from Key West to Marathon, although their concentration now lies in the Lower Keys.

On its website, Samaritan’s Purse recounts the interactions between the helpers and the helpees.

Volunteer Roxanngely “Roxy” Correa-Torres of Boston had the good fortune to meet and assist an 83-year-old Leona Smith from Key West. Smith passed away earlier this month.

“We had no idea those would be Leona’s last days … When I went down to Key West with Samaritan’s Purse, my intention was to serve and do God’s work and be a blessing, but it was the other way around,” Roxy said. “I received the greater blessing (for meeting Leona).”

In the beginning, right after the storm, Samaritan’s Purse was sending down three planes a day with a capacity of 58 per flight. Then it went to two planes, bringing 116 volunteers a day. The volunteers come from all over the country — Washington, California, Idaho and all over the Midwest and East Coast.

Right now, the organization plans to continue offering help through Wednesday, Nov. 15, unless more requests for help come in. To make a request or a referral for a neighbor or friend who needs help, call or text 239-339-7455, or stop by The Vineyard for an application.

OCEAN REEF SENDS HELP In addition, the Coldwell Banker Schmitt Charitable Foundation received the first of five $250,000 donations to help locals get back on their feet. The money was raised by the Ocean Reef Community Foundation and with the help of Florida Keys Hurricane Relief Foundation presented the check to Nira Tocco and Jessica Borraccino of the fund.

“We needed to do something to help those outside the gates,” said Ocean Reef Community Foundation’s Yuri Mikolay. The fund has already financed needs of the employees at Ocean Reef Club. Applications for need in Monroe County are being looked at weekly, instead of the usually monthly review, and can be found at gooddeedsinthekeys.org.

2017 marks the ninth year of the Best of Marathon awards. When it started, it was a function of the Marathon Jaycees. Now it’s an established part of the Rotary Club of Marathon’s calendar. As usual, voting started back in July with paper ballots. The top three nominees in each category made the online ballot. After the “weather interruption,” voting resumed and on Nov. 4, the community celebrated its own winners alongside family and friends.

SUNSET GRILLE — BEST SUNSET The sun continues to rise and shine over the Sunset Grille and Raw Bar in Marathon. Although Irma did her best, she couldn’t stop John Koch and his team from rebuilding and making the popular eatery better than before.

It took the staff a mere 40 days to return the open-air dining room, the outdoor bar and pool to pre-Irma condition. The sun will always set over the Sunset Grille.

Our data crunchers at the Keys Weekly (okay, Anneke; it’s Anneke) searched her voluminous files to uncover the fact the Hurricane Bar & Grille has won best live music venue in Marathon since 2009. Just recently, the likes of Tim Andrews, The Moose Band and Glenn Harman have graced the stage. For continuous, quality live music in Marathon, there’s no place like the Hurricane. Accepting the award are Hal Hilcher and Christine Honeycutt.

Cindy and Mike Minni knew exactly what Marathon needed the first time they visited from New Jersey — bagels. And you know what? They were right. The little shop located on the east end of Marathon is packed every day with locals waiting for plain bagels, flavored cream cheeses, delicious bagel sandwiches and spinach bowls. Marathon Bagel was voted Best New Business by a huge margin — 74 percent — for providing a much-needed product to a town in dire want of delicious carbs.

HYATT FARO BLANCO — BEST RESORT, BEST MARINA, BEST POOL The Hyatt Faro Blanco did an astounding job of taking care of its guests, employees and community throughout and after Hurricane Irma. It was a shelter for many first-responders, helped employees see to their basic needs, and offered space so local philanthropists could distribute needed goods — from food to school uniforms. The community noticed and voted. General Manager Karen Thurman was on hand to accept the three awards. Plus, she was voted Rotary’s Woman of the Year. Plus, the resort came in second in the Best Margarita category!

ROTARY AWARDS HENRY FLAGLER SETTLER AWARD In 2017, Marathon improved drastically when one of our oldest institutions, established in 1959, was injected with new Peter Chapman energy. On July 1, Fishermen’s Community Hospital became a Baptist affiliate. Negotiations started just six months prior, and top Baptist Health South Florida officials said they have never moved so fast. Behind the scenes, one Marathon businessman and board member worked tirelessly to make the win-win happen. Win No. 1, the residents of Marathon can rely on top-quality health care. Win No. 2, Baptist Health South Florida gets the full support of our more than 100 dedicated professionals looking after our care, and going to heroic lengths to keep it operating during these trying times. We would like to acknowledge Peter Chapman for all his hard work in negotiating the transfer of operations of Fishermen’s Community Hospital, allowing it to become a Baptist affiliate.

MOST COMMUNITY MINDED BUSINESS From start to finish, this local utility company had service available to every single home and business that could receive it in eight days. Eight days for almost 34,000 customers. After a Category 4 storm. Not only does that take heart — and boy, these utility employees have it, often switching job duties at a moment’s notice — but also incredible coordination and planning skills. More than 400 extra workers were lined up before the storm even struck. The utility even had a plan for showers and cots and food. Most importantly, the utility pays attention to its infrastructure in good times and bad, ensuring that Marathon was

in the best possible place long before the storm struck. The most community-minded business award goes to Florida Keys Electric Cooperative.

MIKE PUTO MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that only one person deserves the Man of the Year Award in 2017. His leadership, attitude, work ethic and sheer grit made him a role model for everyone who Chuck Lindsey worked alongside him before, during and after Hurricane Irma. He worked around the clock, sleeping in a cot in his office until order was restored in Marathon. He skillfully negotiated with county and state and federal officials to have Marathon’s needs filled in a timely manner — whether that was a communications system or crews to clear the airport. His understanding of what was needed, who had it, and how to get it spared Marathon needless pain. Finally, his empathy for the people of Marathon was a top-down mandate from the heart, and his staff has followed suit. Chuck Lindsey is our Man of the Year.

KAY GRADICK WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD While the private sector can outline missions, it takes trusted and experienced leaders to carry them out. As we knew it would be, housing the people of Marathon was the Karen Thurman biggest and most crucial task after Irma. Space was needed not only for first responders, but also insurance adjusters and, most importantly, locals who had their homes destroyed. This woman did all of that while also taking great care to help her employees find basic necessities or even salvage what was left of their belongings. The locally owned and operated hotels and resorts of Marathon responded with alacrity, but none more than Karen Thurman of Faro Blanco Hyatt Place.

ust before Irma struck Marathon, Mike Rhine, a Sergeant Major with the United States Marine Corps Reserve, had just returned from his deployment to Texas with his Marines Charlie Company 4th Amphibious Assault Battalion out of Galveston, Texas, along with the unit’s amazing 30-ton Amphibian Assault Vehicles. (Those were the guys going house to house with Amphibian Assault Vehicles in 15-plus feet of water to rescue those stranded in the Harvey flood.) Rhine immediately returned to Marathon and had just enough time to button up he and his wife’s own home and follow evacuation orders like the good Marine he is. He reported to duty as soon as possible after the storm — again, like a good Marine.

This soft-spoken man, who identifies as a Texan, has made Marathon his second home for six years. Only his piercing blue eyes give any hint to this man’s character, achievements and rank. The 4th Amphibian Assault Battalion is headquartered in Tampa, and represents 40 percent of the Marine Corps Amphibian Assault capabilities with Companies in Virginia Beach, Virginia; Jacksonville, Florida; Galveston, Texas; and two in Tampa. There are roughly 1,200 men in his command with platoons of AAVs being deployed year round to different corners of the globe.

His personal decorations include two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and two Combat Action Ribbons. He said he will retire in one year, to have 30 years in the service. When he does, he will become even more of an asset to the Marathon community.

When recovery efforts for Hurricane Irma were in full swing, he was the shadow in the room, the one that figuratively took a step back to “connect the dots and vet the possibilities.” He said, “The only way we can survive down here is by helping each other. The Keys is a special place both for its beauty and the people that live here.”

Why the Keys? My wife, Patti, loves the water, she and I just fell in love with Marathon and the people. I’ve always been a cowboy — hat, Wrangler jeans, everything. Now I wear shorts and flip-flops.

But the change has been good.

What was it like in Marathon after Hurricane Irma passed? It was like a war zone. Stuff everywhere. Devastation. (Editor’s note: Coming from a man who served in Iraq from 2004 to 2006, that’s quite a statement.

In Iraq, then ranked as a deployment chief, Rhine was in charge of six Marine TPQ36 Artillery Fire Finders, one Army TPQ36, and five Light Weight Counter Mortar Radars (LCMR) in 18 different bases, FOBs (forward operation basis) and roof top locations through out the country.)

In your opinion, what does Marathon need to do post-Irma? Well, right after the storm, we looked to see where everybody was. Now we need to look ahead for what’s next. Not just tomorrow, but weeks and months ahead. It will never be a rose garden, but if we plant our blocks in a line we won’t have a roadblock.

You are a member of Marathon Devil Dogs Detachment 1216. What is that? It is the only Marine Corps League Detachment in the Florida Keys. The League is America’s oldest U.S. Marine Corps veterans’ organization chartered by Congress. It has 49 Departments throughout the 50 United States. In Florida, there are 51 detachments with more than 4,000 members, who are led by Commandant George LaMont. He came down to the Keys to inspect the situation.

And that was mighty fine.

What will you do when you retire?

Sail to the next unknown adventure. I want to blend in and just be incognito.

But I will miss the Marine Corps.

What kind of sailing do you like to do? I like the long trips more than I do short ones. I need to learn the sextant and then I will have majority of the skills necessary of a good sailor.

or the first time, the Marathon High School Drama Club is presenting three one-act shows — “Mmmbeth!,” “The Great American Talent Show” and “In Memoriam.”

“This is a first for us,” said director Carrollyn Cox. “Mmmbeth!” features all middle school students, with a cameo from one freshman. It’s a farcical adaptation of the famous Shakespeare play. In this one, the witches do the storytelling, Queen Duncan aspires to open a donut shop, and the murderers are engrossed in self promotion.

“The Great American Talent Show” is directed by senior Ariana Patterson. It’s a takeoff on television shows like “American Idol,” complete with self-absorbed judges – including a British one with a snarky attitude.

“In Memoriam” is a drawing room mystery, performed by members of the International Thespian Troupe (an honor society of experienced and exceptional MHS actors and actresses). Originally, the students had planned to enter the one-act into a competition.

“But Hurricane Irma rearranged everyone’s schedule,” said Cox. “The students elected to participate in Marathon Community Theatre’s One Weekend Only, which was scheduled for the same dates.” One Weekend Only, normally the community theater’s opener, has been rescheduled to close the season.

unners from Marathon High School tackled the track at Coconut Creek for the FHSAA 1A Regional meet on Nov. 3.

“Three of our girls – Sarah and Allison Paskiewicz and Alex Pabone – ran great at Regionals, but just missed advancing with the top 15,” said cross country Head Coach James Murphy. The team had nine girls compete overall.

The boys’ team fared a little better, with Aydan Child finishing second and Jonathan Pitchford finishing third. Overall the boys cross country runners finished third, and advanced to the FHSAA Cross Country State Finals on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

“This is the third year in a row they have advanced,” said Murphy. In his eighth year of coaching, Murphy said he is proud of how the team has responded to adversity this year.

Both teams have run eight meets this season, and while four races were canceled due to the storm, having at least one make it to State with diminished training time is impressive, said Murphy.

“Our goal is to get into the top 10 teams. The team is ranked beforehand, and right now we’re somewhere around 13 to 15,” said Murphy.

“They are feeling confident in their abilities, have run the course a couple times, and are trying to break their personal records.”

“I’m hoping to come up top 15 in the state and get a personal record. I was able to get a personal record last year, and I think I have a very good chance of doing it again,” said Pitchford.

Four runners – Logan D’ Alessandro, Armando Perez, Child and Pitchford – have tackled the 500-meter course twice before. Last year, the team finished third overall in the State Championships.

“Everyone is going to have the best race they’ve had all year,” said Murphy of the big meet.

The same day, the Coral Shores High School boys Cross Country also competed, but in the 2A Regional meet, at the Coconut Creek track.

While the team of seven runners did not advance to the State Championships, senior Zachery Roth and junior Zachary Rodriguez individually qualified for the State Championship having run 19:40.81 and 19:49:02 respectively.

Including Regionals, the boy’s team ran six meets total this season.

Three races were canceled due to the storm. That left too much of a gap in training for the Canes to overcome, said Coach Gabriel Suarez.

“It felt like we were coming back and starting over,” said Suarez.

“Throughout the year we try to up the mileage and increase their speed.”

For example, Cole Yeager, one of the team’s runners, shaved about eight minutes off compared to his first race time, said Suarez.

Though the team also faced injuries from two of its top five runners, Suarez said he is proud of the runners who stepped up.

The Hurricane squad is losing four seniors this year, and next year anticipating only two senior runners.

With spots opening up, next year’s squad has the potential to be every bit as good as this year, said Suarez.

“I think track is a great segue.

Also, before summer ends, starting running again. It makes the season easier and makes the running seem easier. They’ll feel less fatigue if they start early,” said Suarez.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma, key members at American Caribbean Real Estate started contacting family and friends to initiate a fund to help with recovery in the Middle and Lower Keys. By starting a gofundme account, soliciting cash donations and the incredible dedication of all of the agents at American Caribbean approximately $30,000 has been raised to date. This has in turn gone out help over 56 individuals and families overcome the destruction and displacement that our Keys community has experienced. In addition to cash donations: loads of supplies were accepted and distribution coordinated, shoes were purchased for kids at our local Marathon High School, rents have been subsidized, and clean -up supplies purchased and provided.
