ast week a local woman climbed a tree to protest its being chopped down.

While the city had the permit and every right to do so, the resident felt the tree commission has gone too far in permitting the destruction of seemingly savable trees lately. Enough so that she went viral on Facebook and the local news media gave the protest some cred. Admittedly, Irma wreaked havoc on what forest Key West has, but we asked locals…

Where do you stand on “Tree Gate”?

“Everyone acted so irresponsibly. So much valuable tropical hardwood was wasted,” said wood carver Gregory Gutsche. “It’s the new people who think they know it all. All these beautiful tropical trees should have been earmarked and set aside and later they could have been used. So much money wasted.”

“I don’t think chopping all those trees was all really necessary. There was a lot of clearing and they seemed to be disappearing left and right after the storm,” said jewelry designer Nick Soto. “We need more shade, not less.”

“I think it would be wonderful if the tree commission were better educated,” said local author Jane Newhagen. “The officials need to realize the importance of all trees regardless of whether they are native, historical or contributing to a better way of life.”

“The city needs to practice more maintenance and trimming on a regular basis, because that might have saved more trees after the storm,” said Ruth Antonovich.

“We have gotten lackadaisical about knowing what to do before and after.”

“I wasn’t here, but it was surprising to find the tree gone that my bike was locked to,” said jewelry designer Abigail Houff. “There was my bike with the lock still attached to a stump.”

Critic says event ‘puts the viewer first’ HAYS BLINCKMANN

t almost feels wrong calling Joshua Rothkopf a critic; sounds too negative. Recognize the name? It often flashes across movie trailers with words like “Heartbreaking” or “Spellbinding” emblazoned over it. Rothkopf, senior film editor of Time Out New York magazine, is one of the top film critics in the industry because he leads audiences to the best cinematic experience possible. And it will be no different when he arrives in Key West for the Key West Film Festival starting Wednesday, Nov. 15. Chatting with Rothkopf feels more like meeting a like-minded cinephile with an infectious love for the big screen, which will no doubt make the festival a dynamic event.

“I am flattered to be invited to Key West; the films are cream of the crop,” said Rothkopf. “This festival puts movies first and by extension that puts the viewer first.”

He will be on hand to field questions during the festival after certain films such as “The Shape of Water,” “Last Flag Flying” and “Call Me By Your Name.” Even though he has seen the movies more than once or twice, there is genuine excitement to talk about them again.

“Other festivals have been increasingly dominated by the publicity award machine, the money,” meaning the quality of the film can get lost against the star power. Instead of superstars, the festival will include Rothkopf’s peer, Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. Together they will lead festival audience discussions after the movies, a truly unique experience to get behind the meaning of the quotes on the screen.

Rothkopf’s recommendations for the festival include: “Call Me By Your Name”: Director Luca Guadagnino, starring Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet.

“Brace yourself, it knocked me out.

It is my choice for best film all year.

It’s a coming of age and a coming out story, adult, sophisticated, smart and sexy. Unlike any other film, it leaves you with a great sense of comparison of the joy and pain of being an adult.”

“Last Flag Flying”: Director Richard Linklater, starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne.

“A really mighty film. Linklater is such a relaxed director and it’s about the conversation that evolves; that’s the drama. Unfortunate that the movie

is so timely and feels like a movie of the moment. It’s about the dignity of soldiers and respect for their country that maybe hasn’t earned it. It tackles the resentment soldiers can feel towards the higher-ups.”

“I am really proud to lend my voice to the festival this year,” Josh RothKopf, senior film editor of Time Out New York magazine.

“I, Tonya”: Director Craig Gillespie, starring Margot Robbie and Allison Janney.

“It’s the story of Tonya Harding and it’s a powder keg of a movie. It’s about the anti-heroine; it takes Tonya’s side and gives her dignity. A lot of it is about class issues versus being the untouchable ice princess. The things that made her a champion also brought her down, kind of Nixonian. Feels timely and yet a great comedy, very entertaining.”

“The Shape of Water”: critics’ choice, Director Guillermo del Toro, starring Octavia Spencer and Sally Hawkins.

“Essentially it’s a romance not unlike ‘Splash’ but with gender roles reversed. The underwater photography is arresting.”

Rothkopf also recommends “The Square,” a Swedish film about the snobbery of art, and “Lucky,” the last movie made with Harry Dean Stanton, who died Sept. 15.

Rothkopf also isn’t afraid to address recent allegations against movie moguls and directors for sexual misconduct. He agrees that even his industry has a culture of silence. “Hollywood has to change; it doesn’t have a choice.

It’s a cultural shift happening right before our eyes. This most certainly will play out over awards season.”

“M

y Absolute Darling,” written by Gabriel Tallent, is a horror story wrapped in exquisite prose and one of the most timely and thought-provoking novels of 2017. A breakout young novelist, Tallent will be speaking about his new book “My Absolute Darling” at Books and Books at The Studios of Key West on Friday, Nov. 17 and it’s an opportunity to delve into the darkness of such an original and deeply moving story.

The book tackles the extraordinary foulness of man and the profound resilience of children. Set in present time, widower and father Martin Alveston is a secluded survivalist living off the grid in Mendocino, California, raising his 14-year-old daughter, Turtle Alveston.

Their dilapidated house is full of guns, stockpiled old canned food, expired medicine and past relics while mushrooms and spiders blossom from window sills. It is no place for a young girl, but for Turtle, it’s the only world she knows and she cannot understand that it is a prison. Her father is a monster dressed as a man. But Turtle’s story isn’t about hope or sentimentality; it’s about carnal instinct and survival.

She becomes the kind of heroine that no adult could imagine. Turtle suffers brutality, loss, competition and abuse on the most horrific level, but battles each circumstance with the will of a warrior. She makes Katniss Everdeen

from “The Hunger Games” look like a pretty pageant queen.

Tallent’s gift is in the obstacles he places before his lead character and showing her intuitive ability to conquer them. The people outside of Turtle’s world – her surly grandfather, a worried middle school teacher named Anna, and two innocent boys she befriends, Brett and Jacob – are all desperate to save her, but in the end, it is only Turtle who can save herself, escaping the stranglehold of her father, rectifying the awful entanglement with him in her head and her heart and ultimately coming to a place of normalcy after an incredible odyssey.

VETERANS DAY KEY WEST VFW Post 3911 will be holding a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Bayview Park memorial. The parade down Duval Street begins at 4 p.m. After the parade, the American Legion Post 28 on College Road will be serving hotdogs, hamburgers and sides for everyone.

MARATHON The parade is set for Saturday, Nov. 11 beginning at 11 a.m. Muster at 20th Street beginning at 10 a.m.

Parade will move north on U.S. 1 to 107th Street then turn left, going to

Aviation Blvd. with another left, and returning all the way to U.S. 1. Parade ends at the Disabled American Veterans club for a barbecue lunch.

The Dolphin Research Center is offering free admission to veterans, current military service personnel and their accompanying spouses and children on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11. They only need to show military identification cards or other proof of military service when they arrive at the facility. Dolphin Research Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at MM 59 on Grassy Key.

Taking place at West Martello on Saturday, Nov. 18 and Sunday, Nov. 19, the club will sell its own locally cultivated plants as well as hosting vendors such as Soroa Orchids, Searle Brothers, Tropiflora, Holmes Bamboo, Peter’s Croton Nursery and Grimal Grove, specializing in all tropical plants from palms to orchids. Also, there will be six informational sessions about gardening posthurricane, helping everyone navigate, from saving trees to tending orchids.

“All the native plants do better, period,” said Garden Club President Rosi Ware. Touring West Martello with Ware, it’s obvious the plants and trees that were able to weather a storm: Lignum Vitae, “which can withstand everything”; bamboo, “so beautiful and dramatic and moves with the wind”; Frangipani, which “always does well in a storm”; Fiddlewood – “love Fiddlewood trees because they have beautiful green leaves, smell good and (have) small white flowers”; and palms which are “meant for wind” such as Seashore Palm, Silver Leaf and Buccaneer, all of which will be on sale. There are enough varieties thriving on the grounds of West Martello to help gardeners decide how to replant.

“Because we lost so much canopy, many people will have sunny gardens this year,” said Ware. “It’s a great time to plant a butterfly garden because all the plants thrive in the sun.”

Butterfly gardens consist of small flowering plants with vines for caterpillars and nectar plants for the butterflies to eat. These gardens include Lantana, Plumbago, Milkweed, Firebush, Golden Dewdrop and Passion vines. The club just replanted its own butterfly garden which can provide inspiration.

There will also be a croton specialist – another hearty tropical plant – plus bromeliads, beautiful Staghorn and Elkhorn Ferns from West Martello’s nursery, and a plant sale would not be complete without orchids, lots of orchids. The club members will be on hand to help and vendors will be selling inspired jewelry, artwork and hand crafted items.

Gardening Tips from the Key West Garden Club President Rosi Ware 1. Do not fertilize after a hurricane, because it can burn the plants.

2. Post-hurricane plants need lots of water to clean off the saltwater.

3. New plants need water every day for about three weeks.

4. Give plants a few weeks before removing them; they may not be dead and regrow.

Do you have a life credo or motto: Leave the world a better place than you found it, and, YES One Person Does Make A Difference!

G

inger King has lived up to her name. She is that spice, that kick that has reigned over the over Key West charity scene for decades. By day, King is a seasoned Key West real estate broker/ sales associate, and by night, or any extra hour, a dedicated enthusiast for Sister Season Fund and Zonta. While the former Fantasy Fest Queen 2004 has raised money for a great deal of charities over her 24 years here, right now her focus is Sister Season Fund, which has collected an incredible $110,000 since Irma. This has provided $132,000 in rent and utilities and affected some 300 individuals. “Our goal is to keep hard-working individuals in the service, hospitality, entertainment and tourist industries, and their families, from being homeless and leaving the island.” And it hasn’t gone unnoticed; people from all over the country have been contacting King to donate. From concerts to benefits to simple t-shirt sales, the money keeps coming from the mainland. “Times I have just cried because I was so overwhelmed, it’s just so amazing.” Normally, the fund hands out $45,000 to $50,000 a year, but the word is out thanks to people like King that our service industry needs help and people are responding. As King says, “None of us stand on our own.”

A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, King has certainly made Key West a better place. Her multitude of achievements include : CAP Individual of the Year 2005 Award, Ronda Riviera Humanitarian Award 2006, Unsung Hero Award 2007, Angel Award 2009, Edward “Capt N” Kidd Humanitarian of Year Award 2009 and the Trish Blanchette Humanitarian of the Year Award 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? The growth and development of Sister Sea-son Fund, now 12 years old.

Charity is your passion; how has that shaped your life in Key West?

I moved to Key West know-ing the important role charities played in the community and wanted to be a part of that. Thinking my background in fundraising and campaign organizing were a good fit, I jumped right in. Little did I know in how much demand I would become. Honestly, I have not always made the best time management decisions in the past 24 years; even so, I have no regrets. As a dear friend always said, “If you want to find Ginger, go to a benefit.”

What do people not know about Sister Season Fund?

1. It is a grassroots homeless prevention group – no staff, no office.

2. It provides rent and utility assistance only.

3. It assists only workers in tourist related industries in Key West zip codes.

On what occasion do you lie? When it would be hurtful to someone or just ’cuz I feel like it when I don’t want to do something.

acter is your alter ego? Maleficent.

What is your nerdiest passion?

HELP FROM ABOVE Samaritan’s Purse delivering helpers by the planeload

amaritan’s Purse Disaster Response will be in town through Nov. 15, and will stay longer if there continues to be need.

“Right now we aren’t getting enough calls to keep our volunteers busy,” said Todd Taylor of the organization on last week.

Two volunteers stopped by The Vineyard Christian Center in Big Pine Key recently to see if anyone had requested help with tree removal or general help getting their homes and property back together, but no one had.

“We can stay through the first of the year if the need is there,” said Taylor. Volunteers are flown in daily from Fort Lauderdale to the Key West Airport. From there, the teams go out into the community to help people.

Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organiza-

tion providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing its religious message. Since Hurricane Irma devastated the Keys, the group has flown in planeloads of volunteers almost every single day, weather permitting, and barring Sundays (although the first three weeks, they helped on Sundays, too!).

The group says a prayer with residents before they start chopping and chain-sawing away, and gives them a Bible, but “we aren’t going to hit anyone over the head with the book,” said Taylor. It also has teams spread from Barbuda to Texas, helping those communities with hurricane clean-up.

It’s an impressive effort of giving.

For example, on Nov. 7 there were

83 Samaritan’s Purse volunteers working in the Keys, 18 of whom were serving on their first day.

Volunteers work an eight-hour day before being flown home again — meaning the day racked up 664 volunteer hours. The crews remove drywall, salvage belongings and clean up yards. They work at homes from Key West to Marathon, although their concentration now lies in the Lower Keys.

On its website, Samaritan’s Purse recounts the interactions between the helpers and the helpees.

Volunteer Roxanngely “Roxy” Correa-Torres of Boston had the good fortune to meet and assist an 83-year-old Leona Smith from Key West. Smith passed away earlier this month.

“We had no idea those would be Leona’s last days … When I went down to Key West with Samaritan’s Purse, my intention was to serve and do God’s work and be a blessing, but it was the other way around,” Roxy said. “I received the greater blessing (for meeting Leona).”

In the beginning, right after the storm, Samaritan’s Purse was sending down three planes a day with a capacity of 58 per flight. Then it went to two planes, bringing 116 volunteers a day. The volunteers come from all over the country — Washington, California, Idaho and all over the Midwest and East Coast.

OCEAN REEF SENDS HELP In addition, the Coldwell Banker Schmitt Charitable Foundation received the first of five $250,000 donations to help locals get back on their feet. The money was raised by the Ocean Reef Community Foundation and with the help of Florida Keys Hurricane Relief Foundation presented the check to Nira Tocco and Jessica Borraccino of the fund.

“We needed to do something to help those outside the gates,” said Ocean Reef Community Foundation’s Yuri Mikolay. The fund has already financed needs of the employees at Ocean Reef Club. Applications for need in Monroe County are being looked at weekly, instead of the usually monthly review, and can be found at gooddeedsinthekeys.org.
