SCHOOL MEAL DEADLINE EXTENDED Monroe County School District has extended the free breakfast and lunch for all students until Nov. 30. All students regardless of meal plan eligibility will continue to qualify for the free meals until the end of November.

T

he well-known “UFO house” visible from Snake Creek bridge has finally met its doom, thanks in part to Irma. The sci-fi inspired structure was designed and built by Miami architect Peter Vander Klout in 1978 and was certainly among the Keys’ most unusual habitations.

But right before it went byebye, the abandoned home, which previously only had the crafty work of graffiti-spraying vandals inside, left the Keys with a rooftop farewell – “peace, love, FL.” From land, sea, or sky, the painted message could be seen. Its creator is still unknown.

“With how crazy this last month has been, after Irma, I wish I could see things like that more often,” said Free Wheeler Realtor Brandi Horton, who works just down the road from Snake Creek bridge.

“I think it’s an important message for the Keys right now, because we need all the positive vibes we can get,” said Robinson.

“The past month after Hurricane Irma, the community has worked so hard to rebuild what we lost. When I saw the house for the first time I immediately smiled. It was a nice surprise.”

Much like any traditional home, the house had bedrooms and bathrooms, and even a pool. But that’s where comparisons ended.

Its distinct shape, a circular base supporting a saucer-shaped top, encompassed a pool in the center of the building that is accessible from its second floor. A circular floor plan would make any trip down the hall

feel more like a weightless shuffle down a spaceship corridor.

Enormous panel windows lined its recognizable white cement walls. From inside, the imaginative homeowner could peer out as if in another world. Its sloping walls and ceilings, once dazzling in their clever design, had worn over the years and began to break down and crumble from the more than 280 tons of the heavy top. Future construction plans are unknown at this time.

Although some are sad to see the house go, neighbors on San Remo Dr. aren’t too upset over the “spacecraft’s” departure. “Pleased to see it gone,” said one neighbor who shares the cul-de-sac with the home, adding that other adjoining neighbors feel the same. The house, the neighbor explained, was unkempt, had begun to accumulate trash, and had become a popular hangout for kids to gather and smoke marijuana.

ormally, a person moves homes. In this case, the home moved. From Oceanside to Gulfside to be perfectly correct. This tiny Grassy Key home is probably the most photographed piece of wreckage from Hurricane Irma — widely circulated on social media and B-roll for every local television news station.

That house. Yes, that house.

“I think we saw it on Facebook the very next morning after the storm,” said tenant Joe Rayhill, who is also the band director at Marathon High School.

“I wasn’t even awake when my wife, Jodi, showed it to me.”

The Rayhills had a tiny inkling of what was to come. They opted for some add-ons when the security system was installed – a flood sensor and a door sensor. The flood sensor started alarming at 10 p.m. on Saturday night, well before the storm’s full arrival on Sunday morning. And they know the house’s history — namely the moat created around the house after Hurricane Wilma passed in 2005.

The Rayhills said that while the loss of their belongings still stings — some old speakers from his dad, kitchen gadgets belonging to Jodi, and a tux he needs for an upcoming music gig — all in all, they wouldn’t trade it for anything.

“It was a great place to live.

We knew the risk. And the landlords were great,” Rayhill said.

The home has belonged to Jim Dalrymple since he bought it in the late ’80s. Reached by phone on Tuesday, he said he hasn’t even thought about what to do with it yet, as he’s immersed in fixing up other, more easily accessible properties around town.

“The home was built in 1933, so there’s some history there, probably related to Flagler’s railroad,” Dalrymple said. “But I’ve never been able to dig up anything specific.”

It’s tiny. And apparently pretty sturdy to have floated across the highway and bikepath in, generally, one piece.

A

fter Irma plowed through Sugarloaf Key and leveled Lazy Lakes RV Park, things were looking grim. For park owners Dave and Mary McGlathery there was the daunting task of getting the park operational to house locals, which they’ve painstakingly done.

Then it was time for the McGlatherys to turn their focus, as they have for more than a decade, to helping local veterans.

Along with Joe Cleghorn, Dave McGlathery helped start Key West’s Homes for Veterans organization. The organization, which assists Monroe County veterans in need of housing, is one of the main beneficiaries and organizers of the annual Keystock rock and roll concert. In the past, Keystock has attracted big name acts like the Doobie Brothers, Huey Lewis and the News, Eric Burdon of The Animals, and Three Dog Night.

However, now that a large number of residents were in dire need of housing, Cleghorn and the McGlatherys had an even tougher task of assisting vets.

Then a miracle happened.

An enveloped arrived at the McGlatherys’ indicating that a gentleman named Gerald E. Bergeron, who had committed 20 percent, or $22,647 of his estate to the organization, had sadly passed. His selfless gesture surprised and humbled everyone, partly because neither Cleghorn nor the McGlatherys knew Bergeron personally.

“With things so bad here – and you get someone like this who does something so good,” reflected Dave. “Even with all the horror we had to deal with here at Lazy Lakes, it was a huge positive.”

“We had never had anything like this,” said Cleghorn. “We’ve had a lot of local sponsors, a lot of community support, but never really had somebody get behind us and give us money like this so we can get out and do something good with it. Every dime we get goes straight to the people and we’re going to take this money, add some, and get it out to the veterans of Monroe,” said Cleghorn.

The plan: Add $17,000 to Bergeron’s gracious contribution to make $40,000 total. From there the organization will work with the Key West VFW, and, internally, to identify veterans who are most in need and give them one of 500 checks they plan on distributing.

Cleghorn said the efforts are a fraction of what they hope to accomplish overall.

In years past, the organization has built homes for Purple Heart recipients, donated thousands of dollars, and even covered one veteran’s mortgage for an entire year when he underwent surgery to remove shrapnel from his skull. The organization has helped young homeless families, whose members were spread among separate shelters, move into transitional housing, find jobs, a car, and move on to the next phase of their lives.

“It’s a dream of mine to be able to do this. (For many veterans) it’s one step to the street,” said Cleghorn of the circumstances some veterans face.

Going into the New Year, Cleghorn said, Homes for Veterans will be his main focus and that his plans are to devote attention and resources to it full-time. The McGlatherys say that for the time being, their immediate attention will be focused on rebuilding Lazy Lakes, but soon after they plan on returning to the business of putting veterans in homes.

omankind has a Hurricane Irma fund that can benefit many people affected by the storm.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, it can offer free healthcare, free birth control and free medical supplies in order to help hundreds of residents.

It’s simple, whether you are young, old, woman or man: just go to Womankind and fill out an application.

“People can’t get back to normal without jobs or even homes. A lot of people will put their families first and health care last,” said Executive Director Cali Roberts. “We expect to have hundreds who need assistance into the next year.” Already holding a stack of heartbreaking applications filled with stories of loss, Roberts noted all end with the phrase “I appreciate any help.” Roberts assures Womankind can help.

After the storm, a Womankind volunteer immediately donated $3,000, which Roberts used to start the Hurricane Irma fund. The donor then solicited friends to send money and checks began to arrive.

The Edward Knight Foundation also contributed $10,000 and Americare, a medical relief organization, contributed $10,000, making a working sum of $30,000 so far and growing.

Specifically, Womankind can offer free birth control in the form of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) such as IUD, implants and Depo shots for women over the age of 26 (those under 26 are covered already).

“It’s a matter of matching people’s needs with the funds.” The fund can also help with medical examinations for women and men. Even if insured right now, a patient may not be able

to cover all or part of the co-pay; the fund is there to help. Some patients have paid what they can and Roberts puts it directly back into the fund to help another patient.

Womankind has also received free medical supplies. Americare has donated medications for diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure available now. The Rotary Club of Key West has donated feminine products which didn’t last long and Planned Parenthood is sending more. And on Nov. 5, Womankind is expected to receive a shipment of more than 500 bras from the national company Third Love.

When bras are returned to the company, they donate them to communities in need. Third Love contacted the United Way which then gave Womankind the lead. “We will go directly to Big Pine on Sunday, Nov. 5 and just give them away. There will be all sizes at a value of $50 apiece. And Third Love said they will send more.” Roberts is looking for volunteers to help that day.

t’s tempting to lead off with a wicked combination of lawyer and gambling jokes here. But the sentiment behind the generous gift to the Florida Keys this past week rises above stereotypes. A group of 1,500 tort attorneys donated about $40,000 specifically for needs of Keys residents after Hurricane Irma.

“They care about what’s going on in the Florida Keys,” Marathon attorney Richard Malafy said. “They reached out immediately after the storm to see what they could do to help. They asked me to speak for a few minutes at the convention so they could all learn about our situation.”

Malafy singled out Mark Proctor and Mike Papantonio for their efforts.

“They and the rest of the firm care about our community. When they knew we needed it, they selflessly offered help, asking for nothing in return,” Malafy said.

Mass Torts Made Perfect is a twice-a-year convention held in Las Vegas. Founded in 2000 by the law firm of Levin Papantonio, and currently led by the firm’s named

partners Fred Levin, Mike Papantonio and Mark Proctor, in addition to Keith Givens with The National Trial Lawyers. Normally, the guest speakers are big celebrities, not small-town lawyers. Normally, the auction benefits a particular election campaign or something similar.

The convention was attended by no less than famed attorney F. Lee Bailey and basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Abdul-Jabbar stole the show, donating and then autographing basketballs that were snapped up by attendees for a cool $1,500 each, which included a grinning selfie with the athlete.

Malafy’s professional relationship with the firm relates to their work with BP claims after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Like that crisis, Malafy was tasked with describing the toll on the Florida Keys.

“I tried to bring to light the affordable housing crisis in our community which was only worsened by the hurricane. I believe that is going to be one of our biggest issues moving forward,” Malafy said. “We want that money to go where it’s really needed. That every dollar goes back to the Keys residents.”

A fund is being established with the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys to assist in administering these and other funds. Malafy will sit on that board.

Do you see people in a certain type of clothing or look and dread serving them? Yes. Let’s see, nouveau riche, big designer purses, wearing too much gold, over the top jewelry, name brand clothes and obvious designer shirts, basically the guido look from Hialeah.

Advice to customers?

Don’t start a conversation about politics, religion or sports at a bar. No, no, no. And don’t say, ‘ I know how to drink.’ Usually that’s the first clue you don’t.

Biggest lie you ever told a customer?

‘I can’t make that.’ That’s a lie, I can make anything. And I tell fake Key West stories, like we move the island during a hurricane and we can swim under it but only locals know how. They always believe me.

What’s the stupidest question you have ever been asked? ‘Can I call the U.S. from here?’ This one is usually from cruise ship passengers, both American and European, who have no idea where they are. Also, they ask if I live here, so I say no, I live in New York and commute.

Ever kicked someone out of your bar? Yes: rude, drunk, shirtless truck driver who was insulting customers.

What’s the best tip you have ever gotten? “I was the server at a private party by myself and got $400.”

What’s your most popular drink? Pineapple-flavored Cosmo and Gin and Juice.

Best conversation you ever overheard?

Always gossip, but I’ve heard it all: people openly talking about drug deals, prostitutes and swingers. The best line was, ‘We’re married but just not to each other.’

Stereotype your favorite customer: Funny, good sense of humor and can carry a conversation. Knows what they want to drink and can hold their liquor!

What do customers want to talk to you about? They always ask about my personal life, like why I came here? I say sex, drugs and alcohol, which is true. But it was actually the Copa and I was pissed it burned down.

Then they always ask me when the bar closes, like they have to race back from the 400 other bars in Key West to have their last drink with me. No idea why.

Give people a piece of advice to get a bartender’s attention. Money always works; no kidding.

Do you ever avoid customers? If I have to, I just start putting candles on all the tables and avoid the bar.

Ever watered down drinks? Only three times, because they needed it. But I admit, I have mixed red wines to fill a glass; no one ever notices. But I never skimp on ingredients in cocktails.

Ever change prices of drinks? Sure, ALL bartenders do it. I’ve up-charged for cheap brands, and down-charged too. It pays to be nice and be my friend.

City approves more affordable housing

he Marathon City Council asked staff to write a resolution asking Tallahassee for the rights to build 200 more affordable homes in the Middle Keys city.

“Come 2023 we will be at ‘buildout.’ There will be no more building allocations, and that includes affordable housing units,” said Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron. “Right now, we have Governor Scott and our legislative body asking what they can do to help us after Hurricane Irma. We need workforce housing. We need to continue to drive this message home.”

The city has about 30 unused affordable building rights to use in the next six years.

Normally, the county government and municipalities approach the state government as a unified front. On Tuesday, the Marathon City Council decided to take the lead. “I think we need to stand on our own on this one,” said Councilman Mark Senmartin.

On Tuesday night, the city also approved the plans to build 13 new affordable housing units. One will go with a proposed self-storage project on U.S.1 near Sadowski Causeway. The other 12 will be built on 41st Street.

Another 45 affordable units are set to break ground within two to three months. The Seaward project, next to the Kirk of the Keys, was approved by the city in January, almost a year ago. Earlier this month, the affordable building permits were awarded to the project from Monroe County’s pool.

The project features a mix of units that targets different income levels — low, median and moderate — with one, two and three bedrooms.

“We wanted to fill the niche of median income housing,” said Peter Rosasco of the Seaward project. “And we wanted to build something that looks like a real community, not a concrete box.”

Rosasco said he was inspired by the Shipyard Condos in Key West and the “front porch” friendliness that project inspires. He also said the homes would be for rent, not sale.

Rosasco’s agreement with Marathon also includes two other elements.

Eight very-low-income affordable homes are to be built on the Florida Keys Country Club next to the golf course for workforce housing when that resort is re-developed. And 10 market rate single-family residences are to be built at the Seaward property along the waterfront. At the time the Marathon City Council approved the project, it praised the developer for his resolve to find a way to move building rights around to make the project financially feasible, as well as the proposed rents that serve residents in the low, median and moderate-income range.

M

onroe County School Board Member Andy Griffiths said the time is now to start moving forward on a housing project on school board-owned property at Sugarloaf School for teachers and school personnel. The rest of the board seemed to be in agreement but wanted more answers about the problems the project could face.

Retired builder Niels Hubbell said concrete modular homes would fit the criteria. “You could be putting people in them in six to nine months,” he said, offering pro-bono help on the project.

“All you have to do is start.”

The “just start” sentiment was echoed throughout the meeting by members of the public.

Rebecca Keenum, the counselor at Poinciana Elementary, said her teachers are scrambling to find homes. Last year, the school lost four highly qualified teachers because they couldn’t find affordable housing. Key West City Commissioner Sam Kaufman, who has two children at Poinciana, said all of those involved in government need to take action on this, and added that as of Tuesday, 319 Key West households were still in hotels. “The (City of Key West) commission would have your back,” he said.

Monroe County Mayor George Neugent said the Monroe County Commission would also have the board’s back. “I’m in support of projects like this taking place in the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys,” he said, adding that the suggested $1,500 rent would be truly affordable. Griffiths said earlier the project would be self-supporting once established. “Monroe County would provide allocations for this development. Let’s get started on this now.”

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said he faces the same issues in housing his 600 employees. “The cost of living and affordable housing is always an issue,” he said. His office is looking into a 32-unit complex for its employees. “We have to be vigilant to get around the obstacles. We need to find the ways to be a part of the solution to solve the problems of the future.”

Peter Batty said the Key West Utility Board built 38 units in Key West for its workforce. “All of us belong in housing,” he said.

Chuck Licis spoke on behalf of two Lower Keys property associations and said there was no opposition, or no “not in my backyard,” from the groups regarding the Sugarloaf Key school project.

Jed Dodds, executive director of The Studios of Key West, said he has offered short-term housing to teachers at its artist housing. “I’ve seen it firsthand, the struggles of the teachers,” he said. “If there is ever an occasion to take a stand, Irma is that occasion.”

Mike Morawski, of the Ernest Hemingway House, said that three quarters of the housing shortage is the purchase price of the land, which the school board already owns. “This dialogue has been going on since 1970,” he said. “We could have had a lot of housing if we just would have started back then. … We need to take these talking points and add them into solutions.”

Florida Keys Outreach Coalition’s Stephanie Kaple said her organization has been assisting teachers for decades, “This isn’t an Irma problem. If we are sitting here in another decade discussing this issue, we won’t have teachers or a community. We have to give our teachers their best tools.”

Community activist Sandy Higgs was stern in her admonitions to the board, saying they dropped the ball post-Irma for their teachers. “I am so frustrated that you are the biggest employer, and teachers are breaking down because they have nowhere to live,” she said, mentioning the empty classrooms in the schools that could house teachers or space on school

board land where trailers could have been brought in immediately. “I have been to two schools that have 37 displaced personnel and you have not been there to help them,” she said, ending with, “Do your jobs, all of you.”

Former school board member Robin Smith-Martin said yes to building the Sugarloaf project, but added that it’s just a Band-Aid on a bigger problem. “This is the result of greed and poor planning and we need to have a sustainable compact across the county for a long-term plan.” He said the board serves students and then added that the board did not create this problem and is not to blame.

Unable to attend the meeting, board member Bobby Highsmith said via letter that the highest priority has been the housing crisis in the Keys and he is strongly in favor of the Sugarloaf project.

At the end of the meeting, Griffiths pushed for a request for proposals by the end of the week, but chairman John Dick and board member Mindy Conn wanted questions answered.

Dick mentioned the $7.2 million spent for the Marathon Manor property, as well as issues regarding alcohol, tobacco, and firearms on school property.

He also questioned whether housing should be developed by a private party or managed by the school board.

Some of those in attendance pushed for the board to make a decision that evening to move forward with Sugarloaf project.

“Does anyone think I am going too fast?” Griffiths asked those in attendance. Some yelled back, “No,” and “You’re not going fast enough.”

“If we can’t do it now, then when,” said Griffiths. “Make this a priority.”

“I don’t want to do something that is going to cause us grief in the future,” Dick said.

“How are 20 little houses for our teachers going to cause us grief?” said Griffiths.

Superintendent Mark Porter said the district will move forward aggressively with this project. Dick said the board is going forward with this, and The Weekly would be the first to know when the RFP is ready.

driving myself to and from college when my parents made the permanent move to Key West in the mid ’90s.

I have been driving U.S.1 selling real estate for nine years throughout the Keys. But the day my daughter and I returned from Hurricane Irma was like no other. It was a scary dream, it was seeing the unimaginable happen to everyone you love and care about, it was the worst devastation I had ever seen.

As my young, carefree daughter stared out the window not understanding the mass destruction, I quietly cried the entire way home.

During my family’s three-week evacuation, all I could think about was how to give back my community. How can I help us to “be strong” during such total loss and sadness? So I created the orange We Are Keys Strong bracelets.

Once allowed back in the Keys, my amazing husband was traveling daily back and forth cleaning up the debris, the disgusting smelly muck and throwing away our personal belongings. He would drop bags full of bracelets off at different locations for me. Since back in town, my daughter and I make daily We Are Keys Strong bracelet deliveries.

We even receive requests by mail. My goal was to spread some happiness and positive energy because we will rebuild! I met my husband in the Keys, we were married at the Southernmost House in Key West, my husband has been a teacher at Marathon High School for 15 years, we live in Marathon, our daughter is a Conch and both my parents have homes in the Keys. WE ARE KEYS STRONG! My heart sincerely goes out to everyone in the Florida Keys — from losing your entire home, or business, to living in a trailer outside your home, living at a friend or family member’s home or not having anywhere to live at all. We all must BE KEYS STRONG for each other. he grounds of Marathon’s Crane Point Museum and Nature Center took quite a beating from Hurricane Irma’s winds, but that won’t stop the doors from opening for the second annual Fall Festival.

Hayrides, roasted corn, kid’s crafts, live music, and crisp Florida Keys Brewing Co. beverages will prevail on Sunday, Oct. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. on the Crane Point grounds.

“It will be good to have a sense of normalcy,” said co-coordinator Christina Gonzalez. “It’s a good event to relax and de-stress for everyone, adults and kids.”

Earlier in the month, the event actually going through was questionable. The museum took considerable wind damage to many of the trees, blocking most of the trails on the site. The storm also ruined the aquarium features and touch tanks, and took out all of the golf carts.

“If it wasn’t for Chris Gratton and Steve Cook, we wouldn’t even be able to do the hayrides,” said Crane Point Executive Director Charlotte Quinn, of the two stepping up to donate a tractor for the event, and build a suitable trailer to transport the guests down the now-cleared trails. Other obstacles included vendors losing equipment in the storm and having to cancel.

“Everyone is still really excited about this,” said co-coordinator Allison Sayer. “Marathon really needed a fall event and I am glad we are able to do it again this year.”

Centennial Bank’s Weenie Wagon will be on site to provide free hot dogs, with Florida Keys Brewing Co. and Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority supplying beverages. There will also be a costume contest for

“It’s the free Irma pass,” said Quinn, who hopes those who are able will still leave a small donation.

And, for a short moment in time, there were questions on whether the neighborhood, which was hit pretty hard during Hurricane Irma, would be willing, or even able, to host the annual Trick-or-Treating neighborhood party.

Donna Kajsasz, lead teller of First State Bank of the Florida Keys’ Big Pine Key branch, knows that this year, more than ever, the residents of Eden Pines needed a hand with candy donations. “We have been getting a few bags donated every day,” she said. “But they are going to need more candy than that.”

The local banks, fire department, and police force are usually sites for upset candy bellies the night of Halloween, passing out water and hot dogs to famished little ghosts and ghouls.

Desiree Perez, who works at Keys Federal Credit Union, was at The Home Depot and grabbed a few “candy” boxes and dropped them off to businesses in town. Along with First State Bank, Keys Federal Credit Union and Centennial Bank, there are also candy donation boxes at Coldwell Banker and The UPS Store. Perez plans on picking up the donations on Friday and will be distributing the candy over the weekend to the residents.

A fan-favorite, the haunted woods of Violet Drive, will be back, too.

There will also be face painting and a bounce house, and DJ on the corner of Oleander and Fern starting at 5 p.m.

Haack added, “I am looking forward to this Halloween more than ever.” She will have a “Melting Pot” theme of cheese dip with Irma mixed in. In the past, she’s had everything from butcher shops or body parts shops, and even the shower scene from “Psycho.”

OUTLASTING THE STORM 2017 ’Canes came to play GABRIEL SANCHEZ

T

he 2017 Coral Shores Hurricanes Varsity football season will be remembered for many reasons – most glaringly, the four games canceled due to Hurricane Irma and recovery.

Beyond that, the team has shown its true grit, first facing down a literal storm, then becoming its namesake and churning up yards on offense to finish its regular season strong.

Chalk the success up to its coaching staff, which Hurricanes players say is the best in the nation.

After a tough two game skid, including a 6-3 loss in double overtime and loss to Marathon High School, the Hurricanes’ record sat at 1-2. However, the team responded in its Homecoming game against Miami Christian, winning 38-7 in what was largely a statement game.

The offense’s ground attack was led by senior Aiden Hawkins’ 151 yards on 22 carries. Using multiple running

backs in a committee-style approach helped the offense immensely, said Coach Alphonso Bryant.

“We went back to what has been successful in the past and worked out of the I-formation,” said Bryant.

The offense put up a whopping 470 yards of total offense. On the other side of the ball, the defensive line and linebackers applied pressure, using different blitz packages that allowed the defensive backs coverage time. It led to big sacks and forced turnovers by Conner Rhyne and Hawkins.

Following the big win, the Hurricanes looked to keep the momentum against Keys Gate.

After a hard-fought first half, the Hurricanes led 14-6 going into the fourth quarter. Just when it looked like Keys Gate was going to inch closer, senior Jay Kubida came down with a batted ball for a red zone interception.

Defensive end Isiah Edwards said the individual work that players put in to disguising their blitzing packages confused defenses. The turnovers are the result.

Later in the quarter it was Kubida again with an almost identical tippedball interception on the other end of the field.

“It happens naturally on the field, but that’s why you practice every single game situation,” said Kubida.

Led by Hawkins, the ’Canes used their powerful running game behind the blocking of seniors Isiah Edwards and Dustin Chamberlin to charge downfield.

Hawkins credits the offensive line’s ability to push around defenders as the reason he’s been productive. The drive ran down much of the remaining time, and sealed the Hurricanes’ 21-6 victory.

Now at 3-2, the season isn’t quite over yet for the team and its 14 seniors. The Hurricanes host Florida Christian on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Coach Bryant is also trying to work out one last game by rescheduling the team’s season opener against rival La Salle High School.

Owner Nassuby Bernal created the concept in 2009 while heading his own catering service in New York. His more than 35 years of experience in the restaurant industry had taught him the fine line between regular service and exceptional customer care – attentiveness.

Excited to share his vision, Bernal relocated to Islamorada and began to grow his catering clientele. One day his wife, Lori Bernal, saw her husband had outgrown their home’s kitchen.

As Bernal’s first supporter, she recommended he make the leap into a bigger space and share his creations with everyone.

After Hurricane Irma walloped the Keys, the Monday after the storm Bernal opened his doors to feed first responders. For two weeks after that he offered free meals to anyone who was in need. It wasn’t until things settled down that he finally turned his attention to fixing the minor problems the restaurant suffered.

Just the Things’ overall concept is based on four funda-

mentals – good food, good drink, attentive service, plus a lot of fun.

“We want people to come in and feel at home,” said Bernal.

“We’ve been blessed with the support of the community. The way they have welcomed us has been amazing.”

The staff at the eatery is fondly referred to as Gentle Organizers Service. Their mission is to gently organize an incredible dining experience for their customers. The organizers tailor every dish and beverage to each patron’s specifications, whom they refer to as gentle members or G.M.s.

Once the food arrives, it becomes quite obvious that the global bistro is onto something special. Take just one bite and BOOM – an explosion of flavor and colors.

“The concept of our food and bar menu is based on the places I’ve been, the people I’ve worked with, and the mentors that have led me,” said Bernal. “Expect the unexpected.”

Some of the most popular dishes are the Mount Fiji, Roast Pork Bites, Italian Stallion sandwich, Cool Caprese, and U-S 1 Milanese Steak sandwich. Their Catch and Cook is an astonishing

“I absolutely love the restaurant. I love all the food, and everybody there,” said Teixeira. “I’ve had just about everything on the menu, the Mount Fiji is spectacular. The pork bite appetizers is amazing and I love that they give you a flavored sorbet before the meal.”

While munching, guest can enjoy the uniquely special decor. The art of mother and daughter duo, Edith Massy and Vanessa Milroy, adorns the walls and is now for sale. For each art sale, $10 goes toward the Charity of the Month. The bistro is also preparing to launch a new initiative that donates coins collected from the outside fountain to the Charity of the Month. Just the Thing would also like to welcome charities to host events at the bistro.

Monroe County Promotes awareness of Public Assistance Availability through FEMA and State of Florida FEMA and the State of Florida are accepting applications for disaster assistance under the Federal Public Assistance (PA) program for damages that occurred as a result of Hurricane Irma. FEMA provides federal aid under the Public Assistance (PA) program to applicants that meet the program criteria. Eligible applicants are defined as State and Territorial Governments, Indian Tribal Governments, Local Municipalities, and certain eligible private not for profit organizations. In order to be considered for assistance, eligible applicants must submit a “Request for Public Assistance” to the State of Florida prior to November 5, 2017.

Be advised of this clarification regarding the deadline extension for submitting Requests for Public Assistance (RPAs). November 10, 2017, is the deadline for FDEM to submit the applicant’s RPAs to FEMA. In order to ensure proper documentation has been provided for eligible applicants, FDEM asks that all RPAs be submitted in FloridaPA.org by November 5, 2017. Submitting RPA’s by November 5th will allow FDEM staff the time to review the applicants’ requests for errors and proper documentation. If the requests have errors or require more documentation the new deadline will give FDEM staff time to reach out to applicants and address these issues. RPAs submitted after November 5th may not be reviewed by FDEM and subject to the one-time review by FEMA for approval/denial.

Crowned the Southernmost Chapter Champions, the winning team will have an all-expense-paid trip to Orlando to compete in the statewide competition, with more opportunities to win prizes there.

Starting now, the Key West Chamber of Commerce is registering teams of students and gathering sponsorships for the competition, hosted by the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation and The National Endowment for Financial Education. A sponsorship by any local business or person of $250 will provide each team with a paid entrance fee into the competition and all the source materials needed.

he Marathon Dolphins are on pace to wrap up their first winning season in 10 years.

Including the preseason, the Dolphins’ record sits at 5-2.

“We’ve confirmed that we’re going to have a winning season,” said Coach Anthony Davis. “It shows the program is moving in the right direction.”

Davis credits his players’ mental toughness for the success this year, adding that their ability to deal with adversity and play at an elevated level has given a hurting community a lot of hope. Some seniors have demonstrated that sort of commitment dating back to their freshman season, says Davis.

All year, the offensive approach has been a balanced attack. When quarterback Jackson McDonald isn’t slinging the ball downfield, a committee of running backs has carried the brunt. The defense has been more than reliable thanks in part to the Dolphins’ defensive backs primarily operating in man-to-man coverage.

Going into the final stretch of the season, Davis said he has one goal – “Go out on top and give them a conference championship.”

The Marathon Dolphins’ remaining games are both scheduled against Ransom Everglades on Friday, Oct. 27 and Friday, Nov. 3. As the top teams in the conference, the second meeting will determine who will be crowned champions.

Applying for FEMA Public Assistance Funding – For Private Non-Profit Organizations

On September 10, 2017, Monroe County was declared a designated disaster area for a major federal disaster declaration for the FEMA Individual Assistance and FEMA Public Assistance Program. For the FEMA Public Assistance Program, FEMA reimburses for certain private non-profit entities (PNP’s). Reimbursement is categorized based on what FEMA term’s the “Categories of Work” which are below: • Category A – Debris Removal • Category B – Emergency Protective Measures • Category C – Roads and Bridges • Category D – Water Control Facilities • Category E – Buildings and Equipment • Category F – Utilities • Category G – Parks and Recreation There are specific cost shares for anything considered eligible in these categories for PMP’s. For Emergency Work, FEMA will provide 75% reimbursement for Category A, 100 reimbursement for Category B for expenses/activities occurring during the 1st 30 days from the disaster declaration (i.e. Sept. 4 – Oct. 3), and 75 % reimbursement for Category B post 30 days from the disaster declaration (i.e. Oct. 4 and beyond). For Permanent Work, FEMA will provide 75% reimbursement for the Categories C – G. For PNP’s, the State does not provide any additional share of costs so anything unfunded by FEMA will need to be the PNP’s responsibility.

In addition, the Request for Public Assistance (RPA) FEMA deadline has been extended to November 10, 2017.

The RPA process is described further below. If you determine you may be eligible, please be sure to apply. Be advised of this clarification regarding the deadline extension for submitting Requests for Public Assistance (RPAs). We have been in Marathon since 1968 and this is one of the oldest Lodges in the Keys. We are a nonprofit fraternal organization that not only helps support the children in Mooseheart, and also the senior citizens in Moosehaven, but also the children and elderly here in Marathon.

We are asking not only our members but also the community for help at this time. This is totally different for us as we’re always doing things to help our community. For those of you not aware of our work within the community here’s a few of the things we do: Offer scholarships to graduating seniors, help with needed school supplies to Stanley Switlik Elementary School, provide needed supplies to Grace Jones Daycare, and the ASPCA. We do numerous things throughout the year for the Domestic Abuse Shelter.

The residents at the Heron House have a full Thanksgiving dinner and presents for all to open on Christmas morning as well. Our biggest community event is Shopping with a Moose at Christmastime. With help from the Shriners, we sponsor about a dozen children, between the ages of 1 and 10, from the community. They come to the Lodge, have breakfast, do crafts, get their faces painted, and have balloon animals made for them, all while waiting for a visit from Santa himself. After receiving gifts from Santa, we all head over to Kmart and the children get to spend a predetermined amount of money on anything they want for themselves, siblings or even their parents.

All of this is why we are reaching out to the community for your help, so we can continue all the wonderful things we do. A financial donation in any amount is what is needed the most at this time so we can repair our Lodge located at 11601 1st Ave. Gulf, Marathon, FL 33050. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at the Lodge Tuesday to Saturday between 3 and 9 p.m. or on Sundays from 1 to 7 p.m., or a donation can be made on our Go Fund Me page. If you have a few hours that you can spare to help us do repairs, or if you have any building materials you’d like to donate to us, or even if you like to cook and have no one to cook for, we can certainly use your help. HAPPY ZOMBIE DAY Annual Zombie Bike Parade Rides Again

E

ast Martello in Key West, usually home to Robert The Doll, is no stranger to the spooky.

Naturally it would be the starting point for the locals’ favorite event, the Zombie Bike Ride. The parade is a cherished party every year — a time to see neighbors, share a beer and dress like your favorite walking dead, bloody, creepy person. Obviously, a completely normal Sunday activity on a humid October night.

The Upper Keys experienced a zombie invasion, too. The Islamorada Moose Lodge was ground zero for the brain-eating and craft beer-sipping walking “dead” to gather. A horde of zombies then biked to the Whistle Stop for various contests before returning to Morada Way to announce winners.
