FEMA NUMBERS RELEASED The Federal Emergency Management Agency is reporting that 37,474 applicants from Monroe County have registered as of Oct. 9. So far, more than $35 million has been approved for Monroe County homeowners and renters.

Statewide, the numbers stand at more than 2 million applicants, and $739 million in assistance for critical needs, expedited rental assistance, home repairs and other needs not covered by insurance.

SCHOOL BOARD ADJUSTS SCHEDULE Monroe County School Board members, meeting Oct. 10 in Marathon, discussed how to make up for school days lost to Hurricane Irma. The board came to a consensus that 7.5 days were all that were needed for students to make up, with Presidents Day and Veterans Day the only two observed holidays necessary to reinstate as full school days. The school board is scheduled to vote on a modified calendar at the next meeting in two weeks.

DAMAGE COUNT ANNOUNCED Monroe County has completed a preliminary damage assessment of residential structures in unincorporated Monroe County due to Hurricane Irma.

• 3,884 unaffected structures; • 10,009 affected structures (this can include just landscaping damage); • 2,739 minor affected structures; • 583 majorly affected structures; and • 675 destroyed structures These preliminary damage assessments are done visually from the street. Omri Ben-Shahar, no stranger to editorials perforated with sensationalized journalism (just do a quick Google search on his no-show debate with Jay Edelson), recently published a Forbes piece titled “Don’t Rebuild the Florida Keys.” The article is not only a reckless abandonment of facts and humanity. It also reminds us that Shahar, and Forbes for that matter, play a larger role in America’s current state of divisive discord. f you live in the Keys, you likely missed the article altogether. It was published just two days after Hurricane Irma’s impact. While most of us focused on our homes, families and neighbors’ well-being, Shahar unsympathetically called for hundreds of years of history, a booming economic generator, a premier naval training facility and one of the nation’s most prized environmental playgrounds to shut down, based on a personal crusade to end the financial hazards of subsidized insurance programs.

Setting Shahar’s callous timing aside, the article, which is littered with blatant inaccuracies, is surprisingly careless on several levels. Shahar boasts a doctorate in economics from Harvard and is a professor at the University of Chicago law school (meaning he should be a seasoned practitioner of thorough dissertations and facts); the piece reads like a narrative we have come to expect from the academic elite – with little regard for basic humanity and far removed from everyday Americana.

To argue with Shahar over the economic fallacies in his article would be like trying to disprove rapper B.o.B.’s claims that the earth is flat. Sure, it’s a fun assertion to toss out there, but one has to ignore some overwhelming facts to bolster the notion with a straight face. In this case, we’ve made a small box to highlight a few inconvenient items that Shahar could have discovered with a simple Google search—let alone actual research.

But Shahar’s chronic gripe is subsidized insurance, which he positions as the inevitable doom of locations like the Florida Keys—unless we stop acting as parasites suckling government subsidies for survival. Or as he writes: “Or, we can begin a gradual hundred-year process of migration inland. People may contest scientists’ predictions that low lands will ultimately be flooded. But if they had to pay true cost of insuring against this risk, reason will triumph over ideology.”

“Reason over ideology.” An ironic choice of words.

Yet in doing so, Shahar blindly contributes to the undercurrent of an American crisis. If our last election taught us anything, it is that Americans have lost touch with one another, as fractionalized portions of the population have increasingly divided into a dangerous game of “us” versus “them.”

The danger in this game is that we have become frogs in boiling water — tolerating unqualified leaders because they are the lesser evil.

I have so many questions for Mr. Shahar. Like whether he thinks Puerto Rico is worth salvaging after a second hurricane decimated the island? And what about California? Not only are earthquakes an inevitability, they have wildfires to content with as well. Or whether he shares similar views about tornado-ravaged Oklahoma towns, flooded cities like New Orleans and Houston and other coastal cities that operate near or below the flood plain (like Forbes’ office in New York).

Or would he be open to a comprehensive comparison between the per capita tax burden between residents in his hometown and the Florida Keys— and whether his views on government subsidies apply to cities like Detroit or bailouts for cities potentially doomed by pension burdens (see “Which American Cities Will File Bankruptcy Next” on ZeroHedge.com and you might be surprised to see who leads that pack).

“Don’t Rebuild the Keys” — A lesson in reckless journalism and a symptom of social detachment.

Monroe County is a donor county, meaning we dramatically pay out more in flood and wind insurance premiums that we collect in claims—thus we subsidize many other areas of the state.

Shahar claims 25 percent of Florida Keys homes were destroyed. The BOCC recently estimated that 15,000 of 55,000 homes in the Keys were affected by Irma. With a far smaller number deemed uninhabitable.

Shahar draws comparisons using the Keys and Dauphin, Alabama. Dauphin has 1,300 residents. The Keys have 70,000.

The Florida Keys contribute more than $200 million in annual sales tax revenue to the state of Florida.

The Florida Keys maintain an average marketing budget of $55 million derived from bed taxes (spent in places like Chicago).

Only a third of the county’s 55,000 homes use Citizens Insurance (with a majority of them paying more on insurance than property taxes).

Not long after the storms of 2004 and 2005, Citizens Insurance showed profits of more than a half billion dollars.

They are projected to maintain healthy yields well after Irma.

The Florida Keys are subject to some of the strictest, if not the strictest, building codes in North America.

But here we go again.

That’s the “us” versus “them” mentality that is so alluring to the argumentative senses— but rarely offers long-term solutions. Instead, I would like to take a different approach and invite Shahar to the Florida Keys. And instead of working to change his mind with facts and figures—allow one of the greatest stretches of land of the face of the earth the opportunity to change his heart.

And most of all, I hope Shahar will feel welcomed, whether he leaves with the same opinion he arrived with or not. Because after all, we are “one human family” here in the Keys—and Shahar (whether I agree with his views) is a welcomed member. So Mr. Shahar, we will be here waiting, because I can assure you – the Florida Keys are not going anywhere.

ocial media erupted with “Is this normal?” questions, paired with photos of underwater docks, after the battered Keys got its first round of King Tides earlier in the week.

Simply put, King Tides are naturally occurring and predictable high tides (sun, moon, rotation of the Earth, etc.).

That they are happening on the heels of Hurricane Irma is just a little extra salt in our Keys wounds.

The high tides of October are not expected to abate until about the 24th.

They occur again in the second week of November, and the first week of December.

“Actually, the November tides are predicted to be higher, a tenth of a foot, than what we just saw,” said Chip Kasper, a senior forecaster and marine program meteorologist at the Key West office of the National Weather Service. “But, again, those are only predicted values.”

So, do hurricanes affect King Tides? Well, it’s more accurate to say the tides interact with hurricanes.

Kasper said the predicted height of the tides needs to take into account the winds across the region.

“Strong easterly winds over a large area can produce higher tides,” he said. That was certainly the case as Hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria moved across this neck of the woods.

“That situation can actually lead to some temporary changes in the Gulf Stream flow.”

Storm debris and lots of rain exacerbate the problem, Kasper said.

“When there’s already a high water table, and you put more water on top of that, it can’t drain as fast.”

KING TIDE TIPS • If you come into contact with flood water, be sure to rinse off using soap and water. Do not allow children to play in or near flood water and encourage them to wash their hands regularly.

• Avoid driving through flooded areas — turn around and find another way if possible. It can be unsafe and cause short- and longterm damage to your vehicle. Due to Hurricane Irma, there is more debris than usual on the streets, increasing the possibility of danger under flooded waters. If you drive through tidal floods, wash the undercarriage of your car to remove any saltwater accumulation.

Some areas of the Keys are known for flooding – the lower end of Duval Street in Key West near Greene and Front Streets or Key Largo’s Twin Lakes neighborhood. After Irma, however, there may be other areas to add the list.

“It will take some time for NOAA and FWC and the U.S. Coast Guard to assess the underwater terrain,” Kasper said. “But it wouldn’t surprise me to see some changes where the winds were highest because that’s where the strongest wave and current would have occurred.” Kasper said Hurricane Wilma created a new island near the Marquesas (aptly dubbed Wilma Key) and Hurricane Charley carved a break in a barrier island on the southwest corner of mainland Florida.

n just four weeks, multiple state and federal agencies have finalized a plan to handle the many boats displaced by Hurricane Irma. The U.S. Coast Guard, the state Fish and Wildlife Commission, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the federal Environmental Protection Agency have each assumed a distinct role to remove the estimated 1,300 boats from the water.

“It’s important for the public to understand that this is a free service; there is no cost,” said Capt. David Dipre of the FWC. “This is NOT a case where someone has abandoned a vessel and is liable. Hurricane Irma did this.”

Dipre said the agencies are working very quickly to remove the boats, accomplishing in one month what took four months after Hurricane Wilma. While some removals began this week, officials are still working to secure staging areas “on the hard,” where boats can be stored to be retrieved by owners, or smashed and

While the count is ongoing, initial assessments put the number of boats torn from mooring and docks at 800 in nearshore waters, but officials expect another 500 boats will be found sunk offshore or on outer islands. That’s not bad considering that almost 25,000 boats are registered in Monroe County. The U.S. Coast Guard has divided the Keys into sectors and is conducting visual inspections to identify all the boats. In all, officials expect 1,300 boats were “displaced” by Hurricane Irma. The U.S. Coast Guard, the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Environmental Protection Agency are all tasked with finding the boats.

IT’S FREE

All of the boat removals taking place in the Keys right now are free to the affected boat owners. The state of the harbors and outlying islands, even the messes in canals, are being blamed squarely on Hurricane Irma.

Just as municipalities have emergency funds to pay for debris removal, so do the marine agencies.

There are contracts in place with firms that will handle barges and cranes to remove boats after a disaster like this one. The U.S. Coast Guard is the lead agency handling the removal of stranded boats.

NAVIGATION HAZARDS & POLLUTING VESSELS

1-800-424-8802 The top priorities for marine agencies are clearing navigation routes and removing boats that are “sheening,” or actively polluting. So far, about 25 boats have been identified as hazardous to the environment and mitigation efforts, such as laying “boom” around the boats, have already taken place. If you see pollution occurring, please contact the National Response Center at 1-800424-8802. The other top priority is moving sunken boats, or boats that are obstructing main waterways. The U.S. Coast Guard and the DEP are the lead agencies.

The biggest concentrations of displaced boats are in Boot Key Harbor in Marathon and near the islands of Fleming and Wisteria in Key West plus the Key West mooring field and Boca Chica Basin.

“Our plan is to begin from the center, Marathon, and then expand operations east and west along the island chain,” said Lt. Quentin Long of the U.S. Coast Guard, incident management division chief for this emergency operation. He said there are currently two crews working with cranes and barges, and more may be added as the recovery effort picks up speed.

The Civil Air Patrol is also helping to locate lost buoys with aerial reconnaissance. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is assessing the underwater damage. The public is urged to report conditions to the appropriate agency. Visit floridakeys.noaa.gov for details.

Boat owners who have lost their boats, and don’t know the vessel’s current location, should report it to the nearest substation of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Mariner who find loose boats without a sticker should report them to the U.S. Coast Guard by calling 305-985-3744.

By next week, the FWC expects to post a registry of found boats on myfwc. com where boat owners will be able to see if their boat has been found. More details will be published about that registry as they become available. The FWC is the lead agency.

The FWC has extra officers who are handling the investigative process — matching boat owners with boats.

They are searching for owners on Facebook, using emergency authority to search Department of Motor Vehicle registries to find phone numbers, and also sending letters to the last known address of the boaters. In many cases, boat owners might want to wash their hands of the vessels.

Boat owners can relinquish title to the boat by signing a FWC form and bringing in the title to the FWC headquarters at the Marathon Government Center. The boat will be destroyed and shipped off with the rest of Irma’s debris. The lead agency on this matter is the FWC. This year’s homecoming court consists of Elijah Woods, Gigi Matos, Ty Harrelson, Paige Joyce, Alexis Romero, Julianne Jankowski, Dustin Chamberlain, Tori Aucamp and Zane Absten, and Jack Yeager.

“Miami Christian School has tall receivers, but it’s nothing that we haven’t seen before,” said Coach Alphonso Bryant, adding the team stands at 1-2.

The following day, Oct. 14, the homecoming dance will take place.

Marathon’s festivities are postponed Because of Hurricane Irma, Marathon High School’s homecoming game and dance — originally scheduled for this weekend — have been postponed.

Principal Wendy McPherson said she’s hoping for a date in the second half of January 2018, although she is awaiting official word from the school board.

“This will give the kids an opportunity to recover, as well as something to look forward to,” she said. “We will be matching it with a basketball game, but the football team will still be recognized.” (BTW, Marathon High School’s football record stands at 3-2 and they play again on Friday.)

Key West game takes place Nov. 3 The Key West High School Conchs are ready for their home game this Friday night and the homecoming game will be on Nov. 3 at Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium, with the homecoming dance the next evening. “Coaches focused on conditioning and hydration primarily the first few days to acclimate the athletes back into the routine,” said Key West High School Principal Amber Acevedo. Other than swimming, most of the school’s sports had a little downtime due to Hurricane Irma.

“All teams have played and are back in full swing,” she said. “Golf and volleyball had little time to prepare before starting districts next week, but everyone is upbeat.”

n Oct. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m., get out, have a glass of wine and enjoy the creative spirit in Key West. Lucky Street Gallery at 1204 White St. will start the season with a poke at Irma.

The gallery will be showing a variety of artists who will be playing on the theme “Cat 5.” Expect some stormy images.

The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St. will be kicking off the Fantasy Fest spirit by opening “Time Travel Unravels Fantasy Fest Parade Lab” from 6 to 8 p.m. as well.

The Sanger Gallery will become part command center, part makers’ lounge and part exhibition space. On the walls will be a collection of posters, video and rare photographs from the 38-year history of Key West’s gonzo signature event. Artists will also be creating wonders and delight on site.

Also upstairs at The Studios in the XOJ Gallery will be “Street Level Fantasy Fest Photos” from 6 to 8 p.m. and on view until Oct. 26. The photographs are by local photographers who have found angles never seen of the most photogenic festival in the nation. Sponsored by Chas. F. Troxel Jr., DDS. Harrison Gallery at 825 White St. will also kick off the season with a small front-room opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Helen Harrison will be featuring her own beautifully carved sculptures with a nod to more green color. “We need more green right now,” said Harrison.

The Weekly chatted with general contractor Chris Gratton of Keys Contracting to find out what held its own against Irma.

Roofing “Metal roofs did outstanding compared to asphalt and shingle roofs,” said Chris Gratton.

“It may cost 5 percent more than shingles, but in the long run, metal roofs were worth the expense.” He said code requirements for double trusses saved a lot of newer roofs in this storm.

Contractor talks about building practices that can stand up to hurricanes Siding Hardy plank siding was the way to go against Irma.

While a lot of vinyl siding lay in the streets and parking lots, the hardy plank did “glaringly better” in high winds. Gratton said the biggest upgrade to codes has been the requirement of extra nails in the patterns when applying siding and roofing.

“There is almost two times as many nails,” he said.

Windows Gratton said going with a hurricane impact window, like PGT Windguard Windows, saved a lot of time and trouble with aluminum and plywood shutters. “It’s not to say they won’t crack. We saw one house that the entire window casings blew in from the storm surge. But they are overall a better choice,” he said.

Offline hotels looking to return better than ever after Irma

elli Fountain of the Tourist Development Council has been tasked with calling all the hotels, motels, mom and pop places and bed and breakfasts from Key Largo to Key West checking on their statuses. Of the 8,500 rooms she’s heard from, 5,041 rooms are online in the Keys. That’s almost 60 percent of properties up and running. Here’s the breakdown: KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

KEY WEST AND KEY LARGO According to the Key West and Florida Keys Lodging Association President Jodi Weinhofer, there are a few hotels in Key West that won’t be ready by the end of the month due to extensive roof or structural damage, but for the most part, in large, everything will be open or close to being open. And, Key Largo’s resort communities missed the Hurricane Irma hit with a couple of oceanfront exceptions.

HAWKS CAY RESORT A large team of remediation specialists is working diligently at Hawks Cay Resort to clear the property and fix damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

“We have canceled reservations through the end of the year,” said Director of Marketing Matt Lawrence.

“We don’t have a definitive timeline past that.”

Most importantly, the management team is thankful the staff stayed safe and did not report any injuries as a result of the storm.

CHEECA LODGE After returning from the storm, Cheeca Lodge General Manager Bob LaCasse spent his afternoons cooking for the first responders on the island.

Now, he is focusing on the future of Cheeca Lodge and the employees who work there.

“Structurally speaking, we are in great shape,” said LaCasse. Damage was mostly to landscaping, and to the pools and some sheetrock in some of the rooms. “We are looking at an early 2018 open date.”

LITTLE PALM ISLAND Little Palm Island took a big beating from Hurricane Irma and is currently closed due to damage it sustained. Pictures of the island started surfacing on Facebook after the storm, amid questions if the popular dinner and brunch restaurant was even still there and if the quaint high-end bungalows that dot the island were blown away.

“While we don’t currently have an opening date, we are in the process of planning, cleaning and bringing Little Palm Island back to life,” said Elizabeth Grillos, the vice president of public relations for Noble House Hotels & Resorts, which owns the island.

Little Palm Island is currently closed while owners clean and plan for its rebuilding.

The hotel suffered zero structural damage and sustained minor roof damage, but had water come through many windows and doors on the property. “The focus and the challenge is the exterior of the property,” said Lawrence. “Downed trees, utility lines, fences, everything outside sustained some significant damage.”

“We are saddened about the state of the property, but are excited to bring it back better than ever,” said Lawrence. “We aren’t looking for a quick fix; we want to make sure it’s polished and at our four-diamond standard.”

As for the restaurant Angler and Ale, the waterfront eatery had winddriven water intrusion and minor damage and is in the remediation process now. “Angler and Ale and the resort’s Calm Waters Spa will hopefully be the first to return,” said Lawrence.

Weddings and other events have also been canceled through the end of the year, and after January 1, 2018 reservations and events will be re-evaluated considering the progress made.

The most important thing, he stressed, was that Cheeca Lodge has, and will continue to, take care of all of the employees. “We had to relocate some of our staff to here because they lost everything, and we are making sure everyone is getting two meals a day,” he said.

After getting the lodge back up to par, “We are going to be bigger, better and more brilliant than ever,” he said.

POSTCARD INN & AMARA CAY RESORT Amara Cay suffered structural and water damage to its property. However, the resort has been quick to begin its cleanup and repair and is expecting to reopen for business on Dec. 1.

The Postcard Inn, which also experienced vast structural and water damage, needs a little more time to repair damages, and is anticipating a reopening in June 2018. La Siesta Resort & Marina, which is also associated with Ocean Properties Hotels Resorts & Affiliates, expects to reopen in June 2018.

“Although we consider Little Palm Island one of our high-profile assets, our focus remains our employees that have been displaced due to the hurricane,” said Grillos.

Many of the employees of the resort live in Big Pine Key and had extensive damage to their homes.

Some of the associates of the island started a shared Go Fund Me page to help with some of their repairs and living expenses. So far they have raised $17,750 of their $50,000 goal.

ey West, quite the best, how does your garden grow? With hard work and conch shells, and determined gardeners all in a row.

Facing the brunt of the Atlantic, the West Martello Tower, home to the Key West Garden Club, took a big hit from the unruly Irma. A large strangler fig/ banyan tree toppled in the center courtyard, tearing away parts of the 1863 historic fort that can never be rebuilt. The rootball weighed 25 tons, and, thanks to the county, has already been removed. Masses of debris and tree limbs at first threatened to cripple the popular site for months. Now two weeks later, Rosi Ware, president of the Garden Club, stood amid the new “open” courtyard devoid of shade and dreams of a lily pond. While the Fort’s damages are a loss, nothing can stop the gardeners from replanting and re-envisioning the historic site into something better, and they are already at work. Thanks to funds from TDC, donations and muscle power, the garden will grow again.

“We replanted after Wilma and look, everything is still here,” said Ware, marveling at her planning from 2005, “I may have to offer classes on hurricane-proof plants next year.” The club saved its orchids, bonsais and even the peace park that Yoko Ono blessed remains surprisingly unscathed. Unfortunately, all weddings through October were canceled with full refunds but the Fort plans to reopen Oct. 20. “We may not be at our prettiest, but we will be safe,” said Ware, who will go forward with a November wedding and the annual plant sale Dec. 2-3. “We lost a lot but not everything.”

Wyland to create live original

T

o help get affected residents back on their feet, Snook’s Bayside restaurant will host the Bash on the Bay on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 10 p.m. In collaboration with the United Way of Monroe County and legendary marine life artist Wyland, the event will raise money for victims of the storm throughout the Keys.

More than 30 local businesses have contributed to, or supported, the fundraiser in some way.

Featuring music from DJ Flip, the day’s events include silent auction, jewelry artisans, henna tattoos, palm reading, and more.

During the four hours of the event, Wyland will be creating a work of art, live before the audience. Guests will have an opportunity to meet the artist while they browse other artwork donated from local talents including Claudia Moriarty, Daniel Lawler, and Pasta Pantaleo, said event coordinator Jennifer Hammer. In the evening, Wyland will personally auction off his original.

ZINKE CAPS PERMIT FEES FOR EVERGLADES What’s next for fishing guides post-Irma

verglades National Park and local fishing guides seemed to be making progress on proposed fees to the park’s commercial use authorization permit program and entrance fee structure pre-Irma. Commercial use permits allow private businesses, like fishing guides, to operate within federal lands and waters.

“The last meeting we had seemed to go very well,” said Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association Commodore Steve Friedman of discussions with park officials prior to the storm.

Local fishing organizations strongly opposed proposed price hikes in August – pointing to the undue burden the proposals would cause. Then along came Irma and added more to an already full plate.

Everglades National Park itself was beat up.

Its Gulf Coast visitor’s center and facility management center were destroyed. Storm surge and wind downed trees, and littered roads with vegetation.

Following the destruction, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke visited the park.

“Secretary Zinke came to personally assess the damage caused by Hurricane Irma and ensure the well being of his NPS team in South Florida,” said Pedro Ramos, superintendent of Everglades and Dry Tortugas national parks.

Over in the Shark Valley area of the park, high water levels have kept trails closed. Gulf Coast, where the visitor’s center was destroyed, also remains closed. The park’s main road is open up to the Flamingo visitor center, where services are still limited.

“We’re now looking to a phased re-opening of this important attraction in South Florida as soon as possible, hopefully within the next several weeks,” said Ramos. “We’re working hard to re-establish full services at Flamingo, and are looking forward to

working with our new concessionaire, GSI, this fall as they transition into business at Everglades National Park. All in all, we expect to have the ability to operate a great 20172018 season for our visitors in south Florida.”

After scheduling a post-hurricane meeting with local fishing guides, Zinke and Ramos announced that CUA holder permits will increase $50 for 2018.

Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association board member Xavier Figueroa said the outlook for fishermen is good.

“A take away from that meeting is that they capped the outrageous 400 percent increase at only $50. So for 2018, the total permit cost will be $300. But after that, it’s up to the park and guides to continue to discuss proposals and find common ground,” said Figueroa.

Friedman said guides had previously taken exception to the park service’s definition of a “reasonable” fee increase.

In the same conversation, the group also discussed daily visitor passes. Previously, passes were included in the total permit cost. No agreement was reached, but some fishing organizations proposed that the passes continue to be included in the total cost. It’s another decision to be hashed out over the next few months, said Figueroa.

During the meeting Ramos announced that he plans to have another dialogue with the CUA holders next year before making the decision on fees for 2019.

tudents of Treasure Village Montessori were tasked with writing down their thoughts and reactions before, during and after Hurricane Irma hit the Keys. On October 6, we published Victoria’s story; here are the rest.

“My house got broken a little bit, but it’s ok.”

“On the first day my dad started preparing for the hurricane by closing the shutters, and putting the sandbags by the door. We went to Theater of the Sea to fill the sandbags. I packed a lot of clothes, then we left on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Packing was a real struggle. I had to pack all my identification, such as my birth certificate, my passport, and more. I also had to pack my favorite clothes or anything valuable just so it wouldn’t get ruined.

Getting to Orlando was fun but my mom stayed behind for 2 days to get the Theater of the Sea animals ready. We went straight to the hotel. Then we watched the news, so we could get updated.

Then I went to sleep.

In the morning … well that day I didn’t do anything. However, the next day we went to Universal Studios! We had so much fun, I went on the rollercoaster. The music was amazing on the rollercoaster, I listened to “I’m not going to die.” That was amazing.

After that rollercoaster we went to Harry Potter Land. I got butter beer, it was terrific. We walked around and I bought a wand and did “spells” with it. Then I went on the Gringotts ride. After that we unfortunately went home. The next morning my mom got home. I was very excited. My dad took us to a famous restaurant called Wahlburger. I obviously got the vegi burger, it was really good, I would like to go back.

The next day we drove down to Miami and stayed there. We were there for two days. After, we went to the Keys. We looked at my dad’s friend’s house. It was pretty bad. Seaweed everywhere.

We went to our house and we had flooding and leaks. That’s pretty bad though.

We have many workers on the house still. We have people working on the house fixing the leaks. There are also people cleaning the garage. There are way too many workers …” – Ansley

“My week was crazy because they told us to evacuate because hurricane Irma was coming. They said that it was coming in a category 5 so I packed.

An hour later I was packed up and we went close to Naples.

The day that the hurricane came I was in a corner laying down with my bunny. I was hugging her very tight so she would not get scared. My bunny stayed calm. Then I turned off the lights and got a flashlight.

We also had a generator so we did not go out of power.”

A BURLESQUE TAKE ON OZ Fans of the famous ruby slippers are invited to kick off the season by following the yellow brick road to Key West’s Waterfront Playhouse, 310 Wall Street, for “Taking it Off to See The Wizard: A Burlesque Parody.”

The show kicks off at 8 p.m. Oct. 20 for eight evenings, featuring of local and international performers, aerial acrobatics, and Oz icons, including a pair of larger-than-life sparkling red shoes.

The post-hurricane show pays tribute not only to the classic tale, but also gives a nod to the Keys, underscoring Dorothy’s words “There’s no place like home.”

“I have never been so homesick or seen so many people homesick for the Florida Keys as I did in the weeks we were all

displaced by Irma,” said creator and director Christa Hunt, who performs as Tatah Dujour.

Despite losing three weeks of rehearsal, costume and theater set-making time, along with a few performers because of Hurricane Irma, Key West Burlesque’s planned season will go on.

To replace the storm-burdened performers, Hunt has contracted others. The Wizard will be played by the 2012 King of Burlesque Russell Bruner, who offers a combination of vaudeville and burlesque; Fort Lauderdale’s Miss Jenna Beth, pin-up model, classical dancer and figure skater will perform as Dorothy. The Brit-born South Floridian Miss Aurora Natrix will

portray the Wicked Witch of the West, while New York songstress Shelly Watson, an award-winning, Juilliard bachelor’ and master’s graduate, once again joins the troupe as the Good Witch of the North.

The Key West Burlesque performers, including Tatah Dujour, Moana Amour, and Miss Zurima, parody the ensemble cast of the cherished tale including the Lollipop Guild, speaking trees, and flying monkeys.

“More so than ever we need lighthearted laughter and fun,” says Hunt. “It’s a great two-hour long break.”

ollowing Hurricane Irma, the biggest question some divers had was, “How’d the reefs do?”

The answer: “The reefs were in better shape than we anticipated,” said Jack Fishman, Rainbow Reef Dive Center marine conservation coordinator.

The dive center’s fleet fared well during Irma, and five days after, was back on the water.

On Sept 16, the crew ventured out to the USCG Bibb, the USCG Duane, the USS Spiegel Grove, the Christ of the Abyss statue, Snapper Ledge, Molasses Reef, French Reef, and Grecian Reef to assess the damage. The Duane suffered damage to the top section’s smokestack. The Spiegel Grove, which famously pitched itself upright following Hurricane Dennis in 2005, did not appear to be affected, said Fishman.

On Sept. 23, Rainbow Reef teamed up with members of the NOAA sanctuary board, REEF, the Coral Restoration Foundation and the History of Diving Museum to host a free dive event, Keys Strong Seas Strong. This time they invited marine scientists, first responders and educators to help conduct

proper surveys. The divers returned to Molasses Reef, Snapper Ledge, and French Reef.

“On the first dive it was astounding to see how different it was. There was no sand anywhere that I dove through, and less fish – I left feeling disheartened. But only two days later, I was excited to see sand and fish returning, and the colors of the corals were brighter. So many beautiful things have been discovered, new and exciting things you can only see after a hurricane,” said instructor and marine conservation coordinator Shayna Cohen.

Along with new structures and crevices appearing, Fishman noted the reemergence of large numbers of parrotfish, which he said brings life and color back to reefs. He believes the changes to the reefs should be of interest to members of the scientific community and recreational divers alike.

The two divers agreed on one thing – the reef has changed, which isn’t to say it’s not as beautiful as ever.

It’s just undergoing a healing process.

we’ll see more fish and sand return.

We really want to stress how important buoyancy is,” said Fishman.

Fishman says divers should be extra careful with their fin placement when swimming through, adding that he believes this experience can only serve to help make the community better divers and help the healing.

Though the reefs’ appearances have changed, Fishman and Cohen encourage people to get out and dive the reefs during this rare opportunity, and to keep an open mind.

Both Pigeon Key, the tiny and historic island in the middle of the 7 Mile Bridge,

and Marathon Community Theatre, the homegrown theatre and cinema, sustained significant damage from Hurricane Irma. And while the task is formidable, it’s completely within the organizations’ reach to rebuild.

It really looks worse from the highway.

“Your eye is immediately drawn to the two damaged buildings,” said Kelly McKinnon, executive director of the Pigeon Key Foundation. “And, really, if we had to choose two buildings to be damaged, those would be the ones. Neither is essential to the operation of the island.”

McKinnon said the buildings pushed off the foundations included staff housing and a small dormitory.

Pigeon Key expects to open the gift shop in front of the Hyatt Faro Blanco next week, and ferry service to the island within the next 30 days.

The Pigeon Key Foundation has set up a Go Fund Me page (search Pigeon Key Hurricane Relief) with a modest goal of $25,000. Because it is on the National Register of Historic Places, anything that has to be replaced will be done to that standard. McKinnon said many of the needs are already met, but volunteers are welcome. In fact, the first to arrive were Villanova University alumni, among them Paul

Speaker, the co-owner of the World Surf League, which organizes the annual tour of professional surf competitions. He was already in Texas for Harvey, and connected with Michael Carricarte of Ocean Reef who suggested helping Pigeon Key. “By working at Pigeon Key we were able to affect hundreds of kids downstream who attend camps there,” he said of the work he and eight buddies accomplished on what should have

been a golf vacation.

The Pigeon Key Foundation is organizing a day for the community to come out and volunteer at the islands, details to be determined.

embers have gone from memorizing lines to counting ceiling tiles to replace.

“The roofing rolled up from either side like two big cigars, taking a 12-ton air conditioning unit with it. The water just poured in,” said Jim “Boomer” Kelly, president of the Marathon Community Theatre.

And while news of the theatre’s damage is widespread, the community has been slow to realize the destruction encompasses the movie theatre as well. It took the brunt of the damage and theatre officials plan to rebuild it first.

“That is our first priority,” Kelly said, “It’s important for our families.”

The theatre’s damage is estimated at more than $200,000 and includes costumes, set pieces, the roof (both inside and out), the industrial A/C units and some flooring. And, yet, it could have been worse. Mitigation started right after the storm, as Kelly and a small cadre of theatre devotees did not evacuate; they worked 14 hours a day to mop up the water and haul out damaged goods. And professional roofers started drying in the space only four days after Irma

passed.

“The mold was already crawling up the walls, all over the ceilings,” Kelly said.

The important things were saved — most of the theatre lights, the projector for the cinema, those comfy red chairs. And the plans to rebuild include hardening the building for future storms.

The theatre’s season schedule has been scrapped. In its place is a modified season beginning on Nov. 14 with a show yet to be determined, with another show planned for the holidays in December.

Theatre member Alison Sayer said MCT plays a vital role in the community with its stage performances, dance classes, children’s summer theatre and also the movie theatre.

“Marathon Community Theatre brings the arts to our island community,” she said.

aybe it’s about who we are or about where we live. Regardless, there are a lot of good people on the mainland who want to help the Florida Keys recover.

Events and fundraisers are taking place and soon a little more help may trickle down to Keys residents.

Two big events are taking place in Miami this weekend that will generate money for the Keys.

One is the Electric Bike Expo where more than 150 different electric bike models will be available; organizers will be raffling off goodies for Keys recovery. A viral CNN story about local Realtor Bascom Grooms and his brother, Justin Grooms, piqued their interest and they tracked the Grooms brothers down to help. The family owns and operates The Bike Shop on Truman, which happens to have a coveted land line. Post-Irma, Bascom Grooms went on US1 radio on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and offered free telephone service. “Before I was off the radio, people began showing up and we didn’t stop until eight hours later,” said Grooms. “People wanted to pay but we turned it into an $800 donation for Kimmy at US1 radio, who lost her home.” Grooms will direct all the money made from the Expo to the Rotary Club of Key West that will ensure 100 percent will go back into the community.

The event will raise money for Neighbors4Neighbors, a national nonprofit created after Hurricane Andrew to bring relief efforts to different parts of the United States, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas.

The money they raise will help Puerto Rico as well as South Florida.

“Having friends and family in Puerto Rico and the Keys, it hits close to home. Well, it literally hit my house, too,” said Chef Liz. Menta will be highlighting local seafood that night, “Our commercial fishermen community are in many ways a microcosm of our island in general.

While Irma may have delivered a solid punch, we took it standing up.”

As far away as Iowa, students from the North Iowa Area Community College took it upon themselves to help fellow students at The Florida Keys Community College. Students filled a plane with college necessities like food, handmade blankets, linens and pens to help FKCC’s students get back on their feet. The Sukup Manufacturing Co. provided the plane, which was fueled by North Iowa Air Service and Harley Davidson of Mason City.

The pilot, Todd Kyle, volunteered his time to fly to the southernmost college.

Bikers ride for Rotary of Key Largo Cartel Baggers, a motorcycle apparel company based on the mainland, organized a special ride on Sept. 24 to deliver donations to the Rotary Club of Key Largo. Hundreds of bike enthusiasts collected funds and brought supplies to Larry Calvano, owner-operator of Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, who directed the donations to the Rotary Club of Key Largo. Local families and community first responders received the food goods and supplies. The Rotary Club of Key Largo is working through the schools in the area to help provide immediate relief for the kids and families in vulnerable communities.

Key Largo School was a recent recipient of Rotary’s Irma relief funds. The school estimates at least 20 percent of their students and families have been severely impacted by the storm.

Uniforms, shoes donated for students

School district starts relief fund Monroe County School District officials have activated a Hurricane Relief Fund via the Monroe County Education Foundation. With the help of an $80,000 donation from the Edward B. and Joan T. Knight Foundation, the money will help students and teachers replace items lost in the storm that FEMA or insurance agencies will not.

The next step for the district, however is to determine the longterm needs. Initial reports show about 100 teachers displaced and without a home, more than 200 students have been displaced and living in temporary housing after Irma, and more than 100 students have officially relocated out of the district. Kids give to kids Sidney Dykman of Colorado, 12, granddaughter of Kathy Hunt in Marathon, organized her own drive of school supplies for Keys kids. With her girl scout troop she collected four bins of school supplies that were delivered to Marathon High School and Stanley Switlik Elementary in Marathon.

Students at Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton donated a truck full of baby diapers, baby food and formula and delivered it to Marathon days after the storm. Spearheaded by part time Marathon resident Vincent Fimiani and friend and avid Keys fisherman Will Keen, the two high school juniors collected $3,000 worth of goods from their high school community and delivered it to the Kirk of the Keys in Marathon to be distributed. Along with Marathon neighbor Ben Hiller, the boys unloaded, unpacked and sorted all of the baby items.

“We will be back to help some more. #FloridaKeysStrong,” said Vincent Fimiani.

KAIR (Keys Area Interdenominational Resources) donated 75 uniform shirts and shorts to Marathon Middle and High School.

"The whole community is working at helping all of us move forward together after Hurricane Irma,” said a representative.

In addition, 2,500 pairs of shoes and 5,000 socks were donated to Monroe County schools, donated by Skechers in cooperation with Farm Share, a Florida-based nonprofit organization that addresses hunger.

Free acupuncture offered in Marathon Marathon Acupuncture is offering free sessions to treat post traumatic stress disorder through October and November. The treatment consists of 10 needles, five in each ear for 60 minutes.

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) has received $250,000 from the Florida Panthers for the Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund to aid Hurricane Irma recovery efforts. CFFK will use 100 percent of the generous donation for immediate community needs throughout the Keys. The check was presented during a pre-game ceremony at the professional ice hockey team’s home opener in Sunrise on Oct. 7.

“What the Panthers are doing is incredible. So many people and organizations across the country are concerned about the Florida Keys and helping us. The Panthers have really stepped up to the plate and done the most of any organization,” said CFFK President/CEO Dianna Sutton.
