he great inventor Alexander Graham Bell once posited, “When one door closes, another one opens…”

Susie Ptomey said she experienced that firsthand when she became executive assistant to County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy.

As a kid, she said, her dream job was to become the legal assistant to a criminal lawyer. Ptomey’s formal education does include a legal secretarial course. To this day, Ptomey said, she has a level of appreciation for those who labor in the court system –they “work hard and are underappreciated.”

Though she’s never worked a graveyard shift, Ptomey can say she’s been a part of some interesting late night duties while working with the professionals at the Monroe County sheriff’s office. For Labor Day, she said she’s planning on staying home and avoiding the traffic on the roads.

Ptomey said jobs of the future should help animals.

“I’m hoping that in the future there are job positions to help animals that have been in distress or mistreated,” she said. Ptomey also agrees that more robots should mean more vacations. The future looks bright.

TROPICAL FORCE A peek at islands’ workers SARA MATTHIS

A

typical Keys worker is NOT napping in a hammock at noon, under the palm trees, with an empty bottle of Corona dangling from his fingers. Repeat, not. Consider this — the Keys’ unemployment rate stands at 2.8 percent, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In Miami, it’s about 5 percent.

Second, many Keys workers have more than one job. Some say it takes two or even three jobs to “make it” in the Keys due to the high cost of living. According to the United Way’s ALICE report, the “survival” budget for a family of four is $62,000. That only covers basic necessities such as housing, food, transportation, child care and health care.

To celebrate Labor Day, the Weekly newspaper covered the islands from Key Largo to Key West, asking locals about their jobs. There’s a slew of variety and a little humor in their responses published in this issue.

One final note: longtime locals like to say that the work falls off during the summer, as fewer tourists are visiting. Through 24 years of anecdotal and personal experience, I can say that’s a damn lie. Either folks haven’t updated their opinions to match reality, or this is an inconvenient truth they bury to make themselves feel just a tiny bit better about the volume of effort we put into our Keys lifestyle that rarely calls for a hammock and a palm tree.

atalie Bevis has been a part of Coastal Realty since the company’s start. Always seeking ways to better herself, Bevis is also an online student at Central Florida’s Valencia College.

As a youngster, Bevis said, she considered dolphin training her dream job.

“But I had known for a while that I enjoyed real estate, interior design, home décor – those sorts of things. My dream job definitely included buying and selling my own real estate.”

While most like unwinding before the weekend with casual Fridays, Bevis is advocating for a new mindset – Fancy Friday.

Bevis said she has a lot of appreciation for local commercial fishermen, especially those who work on lobster trap boats.

“I’m close to a few commercial fishermen,” she said. “When they come home covered in ocean grit and fish guts, then you start to realize how tough their job is.”

The jobs Bevis wants to see in the future have conservation at the forefront.

“I’d like to see more jobs that focus on alternative solutions to disposable products. A big part of the trash we create ends up in the oceans,” said Bevis. “Living where we do, we can’t keep polluting the water, so I’d like to see a push to use biodegradable products.”

WILDLIFE EDUCATOR

J

ordan Budnik recently took on the duties of assistant executive director of the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary. A graduate of Georgia College & State University, Budnik said working as an environmental and wildlife educator has always been her dream job. “I was raised by a family that was extremely supportive,” she said.

Her favorite part of the new job is getting to interact with the community and teach them about raptors (and no, not velociraptors – birds of prey are referred to as raptors.) She recently conducted educational programs for REEF’s summer camp and put on education-based games that introduced kids to birds they wouldn’t normally be around.

Budnik said she owned all of the Zoo Book series as a child and has always been fascinated with animals. Her favorites are reptiles.

“My parents had to sprint after me when I went outside because I always wanted to pick up every snake and lizard I came across,” she said.

By fifth grade she could identify all types of birds, so when she began working as a “volun-teen” at Zoo Atlanta, it was an easy switch.

Her daily life at the sanctuary includes a lot of educating, planning, networking, and dance-offs with the birds.

Even though Labor Day should be spent relaxing, Budnik is planning to visit Biscayne National Park to help park rangers celebrate Vulture Awareness Day. — GABRIEL SANCHEZ

huck Hollon has been designing wearable art in Marathon for three years at Doc’s Tattoos, but has almost a decade of experience.

“You apprentice for two years.

When you’re good enough, they either hire you at the shop or cut you loose to go into the wilds and flourish on your own,” he said.

Hollon met the current owner of the shop, Allen Mertsock, while honeymooning in the Keys. Hollon said Mertsock was instrumental in luring him to the Keys with his wife.

Hollon describes his signature style as neo-traditional, popular in the U.S. up until the 1950s. The traditional: images outlined in black lines and filled in with solid colors. The neo: a color palette that includes modern shades such as pink or light blue. His subject

TATTOO ARTIST matter is punk rock, in that it’s a bit rebellious with a wide streak of fun.

“Tattoos are supposed to be fun,” he said.

Hollon said tattoo artists joke among themselves that the job is part bartender, part psychologist. “People tell us their whole life stories; some of it’s sad and some of it’s beautiful.”

BRIEFLY Relief for victims of Hurricane Harvey Florida Keys officials are beginning to coordinate efforts for Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas. At press time, there are few details to share.

“I think we have to wait a bit,” said Monroe County Emergency Management Officer Marty Senterfitt. He said rescue operations are still underway.

Until roads are passable and shipments have a dry place to be stored, there’s not much that can be done other than raising funds.

Publix customers can make donations at the register to the American Red Cross. Also, Tito’s Vodka, headquartered in Texas, will match donations made to the American Red Cross up to $50,000.

1. After the toll booth closes, unused tickets may be returned for a refund.

During construction, which is scheduled to last 189 days, there will be no tolls. Some lane closures will take place. Those closures will be publicized when the schedule is known.

Fiscal budget discussed next week The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has begun holding public meetings and hearings regarding the Fiscal Year 2018 budget.

native Conch, Monica Muñoz attended Key West High and University of Florida and returned home to work for one of Key West’s largest national corporations, Historic Tours of America.

For 15 years, Muñoz has dealt with everything from advertising, to graphic design, to sending out newsletters to more than 1,300 employees.

Historic Tours of America is headquartered in Key West, but operates in seven cities, which Muñoz gets to visit and work in as well.

“I love the diversity in all the cities,” said Muñoz, “and especially Key West. I get to work with all aspects and areas of Key West.”

ockout Locksmith owner Jorge Rodriguez worked 39 years as an architect before opening his mobile locksmith service in Tavernier. After the 2008 recession, home construction was trending way down and Rodriguez decided to move on to a trade that had longevity and constant necessity. That’s when he received a brochure about becoming a certified locksmith. Six months later he was legit.

“More than anything, it makes me feel good every time I open a house or car for someone. They call you hysterical sometimes, but finally are able to relax after I assure them I can help. The amount of appreciation people show me as a locksmith is a lot better than when I was an architect,” he said. “Even though I would get to see my beautiful buildings erected, you can’t compare how appreciative someone is when I meet them at their house at 12 o’clock at night and get them in.”

His strangest day on the job came three years ago on the Fourth of July.

“I received a call from a man saying, ‘We’re locked out of our apartment,’ but it wasn’t until I got there that I realized the guy’s wife was also locked inside. The insides of the lock had oxidized and with the salt from the air had jammed,” he said.

Lockout Locksmith makes house keys and high security programmable car keys, but unfortunately doesn’t have the combination or ability to get into bank safes – in case you were wondering.

LEGISLATIVE AIDE

s a younger woman, Upper Keys native Kate DeLoach thought she wanted to be a chef. She married Bumby’s sous-chef, John DeLoach, as a better alternative. Now as a district aide to state Rep. Holly Raschein, DeLoach spends her days coordinating services for constituents, handling the whirlwind of legislative sessions, scheduling, and making sure Raschein’s desk is stocked with her favorite blue pens (to replace the ones she pilfers).

A true Conch at her core, DeLoach is a firm believer in casual Fridays. “We live in the Keys so it’s important to find that balance between casual and professional,” she said.

DeLoach said she thinks everyone should work in a restaurant at least once. She also said of all the job-related cult classic movies, she identifies most with “Office Space.” “There have definitely been moments I’ve wanted to take a baseball bat to (insert piece of technology).”

Her top “job of the future” recommendation is to become a music composer. “According to NPR, composing music is one of the only things artificial intelligence isn’t good at,” said DeLoach. Beat that, Skynet.

rnest ‘G.M’ Lopez delivers the Keys Weekly newspapers in Key Largo and Key West. With a weekly distribution in the thousands (and growing), Lopez is basically the Santa Claus of local commu-

nity news.

“I wanted to be a football coach or covering sports as a sports journalist when I was a kid,” he said.

Out of all his jobs, Lopez said, his time working overnights as a distribution coordinator for Caterpillar taught him the most, especially when it came to working in a team to handle tough situations.

When asked to name one “job of the future,” Lopez went with space engineer, which seemed like a bit of a stretch, until he mentioned the fact that a restaurant in one Chinese province has a staff of 20 robots cooking and serving customers. Robots should mean more vacations for humans, said Lopez.

His plans on Labor Day include watching college football. He has a relative currently working for NBC in the sports field, so he’s definitely is still in the loop. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith better watch out.

Tiki time Postcard Inn goes all out

n Aug 26, the Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina treated locals and visitors alike to a journey to simpler and “fun-er” times. Because the resort knows how to party, this year’s Throwback Tiki Party had something for everyone. Music, food, rum, hula dancing, island-style entertainment, you name it, it was there. Party-goers were encouraged to dress in their best vintage tiki attire, which many did, and though light rain-showers showed up to the party too, guests simply put down their hair and danced in the rain.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school? My AP U.S. History and Government classes for sure. They gave me an understanding of the importance of our country’s leader’s positions on various matters.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I’d like to be remembered for having a polite and professional personality as a student.

What are your plans after high school? I would like to attend a four-year state university in Florida and spend my summers working as a camp counselor.

If you had to build a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you place inside? I would put in some photos of the Keys and Everglades so future generations can see how things have changed.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? I would like to obtain a master’s degree in psychology, work for an established group practice, and buy a home.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home?

I want to see if there is another place I’d like better, but I see myself retiring in the Keys.

Good for the heart, better for the soul

R

esa Guastavino’s journey in self-discovery began as an innocent walk through the mangroves with her dog, Reef, and boyfriend, Cody Gunthner.

They were in search of driftwood, and though she found plenty of it, they also stumbled across an astonishing amount of garbage.

“Seeing the trash was definitely heartbreaking. Seeing so much of it was unbelievable – as far as

you could see there was trash. Even when you got down you could find a handful of microscopic trash in the soil,” said Guastavino.

A native of Islamorada, Guastavino was determined not to have her home become a dump. So she started walking her dog through the mangroves periodically, and would emerge every time with trash. That’s when she started stumbling across drift beans.

“Even though I was heartbroken every time I went, I would still manage to come out with a bean that had so much beauty within,” she said. “The seeds are like tiny vessels with blueprints to life inside. We can think about it as a metaphor for our lives.”

And thus, the Enchanted Beans were born.

AN EXCERPT FROM HER POEM “DRIFTWOOD SPIRIT”: “… She was loved so deeply by the land.

This is where she chose to stand.

Planted to grow and expand.

Nurturing her creatures and heartland.

It came down and she could no longer be.

Where she would go, she could no longer see.

Living a life as an old tree.

A journey into the wide open sea …”

Before the beans, Guastavino did not consider herself an artist.

Yet, so much self-expression and symbolism began to grow out of these beans.

“I was fascinated by the mystery, their journey, and where in the world they came from. It’s as if the whole world had worked together to get them under my feet,” she said. “The same journey the beans undertake is happening inside us all.”

Guastavino began creating wearable necklaces and pendants from them. The necklaces are decorated with birds and marine life, then painted in bright colors. She still wears the first bean necklace she made, adorned with a lotus flower, symbolizing her personal growth after hard times.

Her beans have even prompted her to write poetry based on a bean’s journey.

On her 21st birthday, Guastavino decided she was going to do 21 acts of kindness. The experience was eye opening to say the least, and afterwards, she decided that acts of kindness were going to be the currency required to exchange her beans.

T

he best way to enjoy your day at the original Island Grill is to have some of the restaurant’s famous tuna nachos on the private oceanfront beach and sip one of Gina Rew’s Drunken Sailors. This creamy frozen drink is made with Sailor Jerry rum, vanilla vodka, a splash of ice cream, piña colada mix, orange juice, drizzled with chocolate — Rew’s very own invention. It makes sense that her libations are so tasty: she’s been working at Island Grill since its doors opened more than 15 years ago.

The “Sailor” drink grew out of a request from the rum company to create cocktails featuring its liquor. Rew struck gold and her regulars always ask for them, she said.

A “born-again Conch,” Rew made her way down to Keys in 1978 right out of high school.

The plan was to take a year off before college. “I fell in love with the Florida Keys. I had never left home or been to Florida when I came down to work at the Ocean Reef Club.

I’ve been here ever since,” she said smiling.

When she’s not laying low, she’s out fishing, snorkeling, or riding on the back of the Harley with her beloved.
