typical Keys worker is NOT napping in a hammock at noon, under the palm trees, with an empty bottle of Corona dangling from his fingers. Repeat, not. Consider this — the Keys’ unemployment rate stands at 2.8 percent, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In Miami, it’s about 5 percent.

Second, many Keys workers have more than one job. Some say it takes two or even three jobs to “make it” in the Keys due to the high cost of living.

According to the United Way’s ALICE report, the “survival” budget for a family of four is $62,000. That only covers basic necessities such as housing, food, transportation, child care and health care.

To celebrate Labor Day, the Weekly newspaper covered the islands from Key Largo to Key West, asking locals about their jobs. There’s a slew of variety and a little humor in their responses published in this issue.

One final note: longtime locals like to say that the work falls off during the summer, as fewer tourists are visiting. Through 24 years of anecdotal and personal experience, I can say that’s a damn lie.

Either folks haven’t updated their opinions to match reality, or this is an inconvenient truth they bury to make themselves feel just a tiny bit better about the volume of effort we put into our Keys lifestyle that rarely calls for a hammock and a palm tree.

ue Corbin got off the school bus one day and walked into Dennis Bishop’s CPA practice and asked for an after-school job. She started as a file clerk and then went to night school at Florida Keys Community College, then St. Leo University to earn a degree in accounting, all the while working for Bishop for more than 26 years.

“I learned the business from him,” she said, from her new offices at 10977 Overseas Highway, Marathon, across from Bealls Outlet.

Accountants don’t just prepare tax returns. They are not only versed in current regulations, but also come to know things about specific industries they help.

“My clients’ needs are varied,” Corbin said. “We must continually educate ourselves on the tax law changes and requirements. I attend a tax update conference annually as well as online courses to satisfy my continuing education requirements. I specialize in small business which means I must have knowledge of the inner workings of many different industries here in the Keys.”

TATTOO ARTIST

huck Hollon has been designing wearable art in Marathon for three years at Doc’s Tattoos, but has almost a decade of experience.

“You apprentice for two years. When you’re good enough, they either hire you at the shop or cut you loose to go into the wilds and flourish on your own,” he said. Hollon met the current owner of the shop, Allen Mertsock, while honeymooning in the Keys. Hollon said Mertsock was instrumental in luring him to the Keys with his wife.

Hollon describes his signature style as neo-traditional, popular in the U.S. up until the 1950s. The traditional: images outlined in black lines and filled in with solid colors. The neo: a color palette that includes modern shades such as pink or light blue. His subject matter is punk rock, in that it’s a bit rebellious with a wide streak of fun.

“Tattoos are supposed to be fun,” he said.

Hollon said tattoo artists joke among themselves that the job is part bartender, part psychologist. “People tell us their whole life stories; some of it’s sad and some of it’s beautiful.”

PARTNERS: FATHER & DAUGHTER Mothners work in real estate side by side SARA MATTHIS

he’s 24, he’s 55. She’s had a real estate license for 19 months, he’s been licensed for almost 20 years. They sit at desks about 18 inches apart on the second floor of the Coldwell Banker Schmitt real estate offices in Marathon where they are both agents.

“After working with him, I discovered he’s decently funny. And also smart,” said Samantha Jo Mothner, getting a small grin of quiet delight from her dad, Josh Mothner.

They’ve shared an office for more than two years now, exploring the dynamic of forming an occupational partnership on top of a direct blood tie. Both acknowledge the partnership has required changes both personal and professional.

“I’ve learned a tremendous amount from him,” Samantha said.

“There’s nothing greater on the planet than working with your adult daughter,” he said. “It’s great.”

But there were some bumps in the road.

Samantha describes some early “blowouts.”

Josh said he learned to delegate. Each nods in agreement as the other speaks.

“You know, working with her has changed the whole dynamic,” he said. “This office is much more upbeat and a happy place. We’ve developed a shared presence.”

Josh said they have many of the same workplace strengths, but some preferences have emerged. She handles most of the paperwork. He does more of the hand-shaking.

She’s more skilled at covering the tech side of the arrangement.

The Mothners have found their niche as “consultative sellers” — really helping clients find the best fit for personal needs, whether that means a retirement home with specific requirements or meeting with business owners about growing their business. It’s a shift the two have undertaken together. Josh said when Samantha came on board, he was handling more residential sales, although the two do those as well.

“You know, working with her has changed the whole dynamic. This office is much more upbeat and a happy place. We’ve developed a shared presence.”

“We’re covering a broad-based market, and that includes more commercial properties,” he said. “It’s different, because the commercial market has slower-paced results.”

When Samantha graduated from Marathon High School in 2010, it wasn’t her dream or goal to become a real estate agent. She went away to school for a year, came back, and then tried her hand in the food industry and also as a dental assistant. When she found herself at loose ends, her father suggested she give real estate a try.

“It was a slow start, but I have recently closed some deals,” Samantha said.

“She’s closed three deals, a total of $1.6 million,” said Josh, the numbers tripping off his tongue.

Business partnerships between parents and children have an added layer of stability. It’s a stronger bond than a pure business relationship.

That close relationship also extends the business day. It’s not weird to get a text at 6:30 p.m. Sometimes they get odd looks, though.

“I’ve made a practice to find some way to let them know he’s my father in the first few minutes of conversation.

I’ll say, ‘I just got a text from mom.’” It helps dispel the sugar daddy conclusion that some people will assume.

Samantha said she’s mentally stimulated by the complexity of the job. Getting to see the houses is fun, too, and the money’s not bad.

“I like how the work always comes down to a number. It always comes down to an equation,” she said.

“If you make it a math problem, it takes away the stress,” said Josh. “That was taught to me, and I taught it to her.”

A letter to Sen. Anitere Flores (R-39) Please use this letter to assist you in convincing fellow legislators to provide airborne drones to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Clearly, one drone could increase the efficiency of an officer many, many times over, especially here in the Keys where the few officers on duty are supposed to police tens of thousands of people on hundreds of square miles of open water. For those who think drones would be intruding into the privacy of the public, I would suggest that they consider the “intrusive” cameras that were vital in capturing the mentally twisted brothers who carried out the Boston Marathon bombing.

Harvey help I am just starting a talk about having the City of Marathon and our citizens do a relief effort to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. It is on the city agenda to be discussed on Tuesday, Sept. 12. My heart breaks for the victims of this storm.

Marathon has felt the wrath of Georges and Wilma, and knows what a toll a hurricane takes.

Right now Houston and other areas are only asking for money, but in a few weeks they will start needing supplies to put their lives back together.

We need to start somewhere and this is it. No plan has been formulated yet, but we will need staging areas, volunteers, trucks and people to drive the supplies, etc. in the future.

BRIEFLY Relief for victims of Hurricane Harvey Florida Keys officials are beginning to coordinate efforts for Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas. At press time, there are few details to share.

“I think we have to wait a bit,” said Monroe County Emergency Management Officer Marty Senterfitt. He said rescue operations are still underway.

Until roads are passable and shipments have a dry place to be stored, there’s not much that can be done other than raise funds.

The City of Marathon will discuss some type of joint relief effort at the city council meeting on Tuesday, Sept.

12 at 5:30 p.m. Publix customers can make donations at the register to the American Red Cross. And the Marathon Church of God and Operation Compassion are working to raise funds. Every $3,000 sends a semi-truck of supplies to the afflicted area and 100 percent of the monies collected go to “Harvey Relief.” Brutus Seafood and Dogs en Vogue are hosting an event on Friday, Sept. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the restaurant. Funds collected will benefit the animals of Houston. Also, Tito’s Vodka, headquartered in Texas, will match donations made to the American Red Cross up to $50,000.

kay, mountain climbing isn’t exactly a profession. But it comes damn close when it takes up a considerable amount of your disposable income and a tremendous amount time for training. So, the Weekly feels fairly confident with the following statement: Marathon’s Martin Sykut is a heckin’ mountain climber.

Earlier this year, he made the summit of Aconcagua in Argentina — one of the famed seven summits. It’s a huge accomplishment to climb 22,838 feet, especially when you spend 50 weeks of the year at 3 feet above sea level.

He made the trip solo, after tons of research, without a guide or any other companions. And he did it fast — eight days to the summit, two days down the mountain.

“The biggest obstacle is the altitude. There’s zero preparations for that,” he said, adding that he arrived at “first camp” only to wake up with a blazing headache, so bad he thought he would have to cancel the mission, but was able to save himself with a single ibuprofen.

“The last two hours is a struggle. I won’t lie,” Martin said of the summit. “To climb mountains you have to be physically fit, which I am.”

Three times a week he goes for a “light” run — seven miles in about 50 minutes. Twice a week he bikes “only” 15 to 20 miles. On Saturday he does a triathlon — a 1-mile swim, 50-mile bike ride and 3- to 6-mile run.

“That’s an endurance workout. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon that’s a good one, a tough one.”

Oh, and he lost two toenails on the climb. “I had to squeeze my teeth and suffer,” said the Poland native who makes a living in the Keys as a caretaker and private tennis coach.

Martin spends months planning and training for his annual mountain-climbing trek. He’s summited about 10 major peaks, including his first — Mount Rainier, which is a measly 14,411 feet above sea level. The planning and execution have so many variables — permits, conditions, equipment. Any sour note could throw a year of planning out the window. Of the Aconcagua trip he said, “The weather was beautiful, everything was perfect. Most expeditions take an entirety of about two and a half weeks. I finished in two weeks. It was a pretty big accomplishment.”

Dog Lab specializes in making dogs happy through training and dog daycare. The company, established in 2016, does basic and advanced training, search and rescue training, puppy classes, and behavioral changes for abused dogs through positive reinforcement with fun games and interactions. Dog Lab also offers classes to become an animal trainer.

The owner Gus Cirulli and his team have more than 20 years of experience with wild and domestic animals at zoos and aquariums. “When you have worked with so many different species, you become versatile and a lot sharper on behavioral modification,” he said.

At Dog Lab, they know a lot of locals have demanding work schedules, sometimes with two or more jobs, and this way, furry friends have a place they can go for a better quality of life. Some of the dogs come all week, other just come for play time a couple times a week to relieve stress and add stimulation to their day.

Cirulli has also funded “Noses for Conservation,” a nonprofit organization that trains dogs in South America from shelters to help search for endangered species.

“With all cooking, or in my case not cooking, it’s care. Caring about your ingredients, treating them properly. It’s a huge thing in the sushi world, to treat with respect everything you’re using, whether it’s an ingredient or a utensil,” said Connor Gray of Castaway Waterfront Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Marathon.

At 24, Gray already has an impressive resume, earned at a handful of restaurants in Massachusetts. For his local ingredients, he gravitates toward wahoo — juicy and meaty. Lionfish is another specialty. “How great is it that chefs can participate in the eradication of an invasive species? Plus, it’s one of the sweetest, most delicate fish I have ever worked with.”

Gray also works with imported staples such as eel and herbs such as shiso (a combination of mint and basil). And, if you’ve never had eel … well, that leaves more for us. rika Goodman had to look up her actual title, but as member services and sales coordinator at Marathon Chamber of Commerce, she’s learned a lot about Marathon since she started her job.

“I didn’t realize how many islands there are in the Keys,” she said.

“And, that the tree on the 7 Mile Bridge is named Fred.”* Moving to the Keys from West Palm Beach four years ago, she is gearing up for her first Chamber awards banquet in October. “I am really excited about the banquet. It seems like it will be right up my alley,” she said. (For the past three years, she worked as a wedding planner for Mile Marker Party Rentals.)

The newlywed’s adventurous soul takes her fishing and spearfishing every weekend while saving money to put a down payment on a house with her husband R.D., a local charter captain.

“Since I am new to this position, I am learning much more about the local businesses rather than just driving by them on the road,” she said. *There are about 1,700 islands, she thinks…

“M

omentum is everything when you are throwing a cast net,” said fisherman Riley Young.

For the past four years, April and May stay busy for the 2014

Marathon High School graduate.

At 16, Byron Goss taught him the technique and after receiving a tech degree for marine mechanics, the ocean called on him.

“At least when something breaks on the boat, I have an idea on what it is,” he said.

He wakes in the wee hours of the morning, and has the boat launched by 5:30 a.m.: the mullet run during tarpon season. He sells the bait to local bait shops and charter captains and follows the bait run up and down the Keys.

“The most I have caught in a single throw is 15 dozen,” he said, while showing younger generations the trade. His boss and friend, Justin Bruland, brings his nephew on the boat on the weekends to help.

And, in four years, he’s only fallen overboard once, at 6 a.m.

o be a tour guide operator takes a particular skill set. You need to be able to handle a kayak, have a good idea of the geography, be an amateur meteorologist, understand the ecosystem and its inhabitants plus all the things that come along with running your own business — web design, promotion, bookkeeping, etc.

Daniel Lonergan has been doing it for more than three years.

More than anything, he said, “You’ve got to be a bit of an entertainer as well.”

“Nature doesn’t always cooperate,” he said. “I’ve learned to make a single frigate sighting into a fiveminute discussion. But even the Cassiopea (upside down) jelly fish

His tours depart from Sombrero Beach and navigate through the many mangrove trails of Boot Key. He also offers customized tours for clients with specific interests.

Lonergan moved to the Keys after receiving a degree from Flagler University in St. Augustine. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, he said the Keys have a familiar feel.

“As soon as I came over the bridges, it reminded me of home,” he said. “I’ve always been on the water; this came second nature to me.”

eing a server in the Keys is known to be a lucrative job, and Jessika Rady, who works upstairs at Square Grouper’s My New Joint, knows that. For the past 15 years of waiting tables or bartending in the Keys, she’s been at The Joint since the day it opened two and a half years ago. “It’s a great place to work because we have year-round clientele, since the locals love it here,” she said.

The mom of two boys likes the flexible schedule working at a restaurant offers. “I am spoiled by my coworkers who really help me out when the kids have something going on,” she said. “I don’t miss out on their activities because of the flexibility.”

Her favorite part of working at My New Joint is the menu. “I am gluten free, and they offer a wide variety of items I can eat,” she said. When she is visiting other restaurants, she looks for great service and a great menu.

asey Whippo joined the City of Marathon’s Utilities Department as a trainee just last year. Now he has his operator’s certification from the state Department of Environmental Protection and is the lead operator of the city’s No. 3 plant.

“You need to understand microbiology and chemistry,” Whippo said.

“Plus you need to understand the mechanical workings of the plant, work with lab equipment and on computers.”

It’s science, baby.

His experience dovetails perfectly with his current job. He spent some time installing both commercial and

residential lateral sewer lines, some site development for construction. But he was also a weekend commercial lobsterman.

“That’s what we’re doing here,” he said, gesturing around the plant. “We are protecting the environment and making clean water.”

He’s doing double work, too — manning the station single-handedly until more employees are hired. He said it’s good work.

“I like the benefits, and at least part of the day we get to be inside the office in A/C,” he said, grinning.

The Englewood, Florida native has lived in the Keys almost 20 years.

abor Day. It’s a day set aside, allegedly, to rest from one’s labors while celebrating them. It’s just perfect — a day off to contemplate JOHN work. I would be remiss, however, if I overlooked this fact on Labor Day. As my mother reminded me many time throughout her life, she was in labor with me for 54 hours before I made my first appearance on the planet. Although I was there, I have no recollection of this at all. I imagine it to be true, judging from the countless times Mom brought it up.

Circling back to the topic of labor as work (okay, 54 hours of labor isn’t pleasurable recreation), many readers of this column know I wear a few different hats in my professional life.

There’s this, the writer. I was one of those students who paid attention in my English and composition classes. I love the nuances and intricacies of the English language, and actually enjoy joining words into sentences, paragraphs, and song lyrics. I don’t know if I’ll ever make any meaningful literary contribution, but there may still be a book in me yet.

As many of you may already know, my main gig — my day job — has been music. While my parents insisted I study something else in college, they had no idea that music would always be what I could count on to earn a living. “Get a degree so you’ll always have something to fall back on,” they said. Little did any of us know back then that music would always be my fall-back job. And I love it.

My love of music and writing naturally directed me to recording, copywriting, production, voiceovers and radio. I remember the years I would work late at my gigs, and then had to be up rather early to do morning radio shows. For many years I was a seriously sleep-deprived individual.

When I wanted to release recordings of my music, somebody had to design my album and CD covers. That pointed me right to graphic design, page layouts, and that revolutionary new thing called desktop publishing.

I discovered that all these skills could be useful in helping other businesses besides just mine. I studied advertising and marketing, and those concepts came in very handy in my publishing career (both as a former publisher of this newspaper and my current magazine).

One of the things my parents left me with (along with the stories of my not-so-pleasant nativity) was a sense of responsibility and community service.

Giving back. That led me into the years I served on the United Way board of directors, and into helping form and govern a new city born in November of 1999. That took —and has taken — many more than 54 hours of labor.

But it certainly has been worth it in my book (that I may one day write).

Before we close this Labor Day chapter, I must disclose the strangest job I’ve ever done — prop man for a circus. I learned some valuable lessons at that gig. First, the props that elephants stand on are big. And heavy.

Nobody ever thinks about this when they just watch the circus. The second valuable lesson is that you do not want to be around an elephant when he needs to go number two. It’s a lot.

And it has to be hauled out on snow shovels (the bigger, the better). And the third valuable lesson is that being up close and personal with some of the largest of God’s creatures — lions, tigers, and bears (and elephants) — comes with a unique collection of aromas and scents. Even if they don’t fill your snow shovels.

The bottom line for me this Labor Day is an old saying attributed to Confucius: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I have been blessed in this regard.

My wish for all of us is that we love what we do enough to get up the next day and do it all over again. And Mom, wherever you are in the spiritual plane of the afterlife, I apologize (again) for causing you so much discomfort so early in my existence. I have a feeling I’ll be apologizing for that one into infinity … and beyond.

THE IGUANA ASSASSIN GOES AFTER

views were recorded on a recent post shared from the Facebook page “Florida Keys Iguana Killers Club.” The death threats are usually from ladies in New Jersey or New York with 27 cats and two lizards as pets, according to the page’s founder, Chuck Meier, who has been in the iguana eradication “business” for three or four years now. “(People who don’t live here) don’t understand that they are an invasive species here,” he said. “I try to explain to them to replace the word ‘iguana’ with ‘rat’ or ‘cockroach,’ but it usually doesn’t sink in, mainly because they are from up north and don’t have an issue with iguanas because they have winters.”

After planting his yard with new plants and spending hundreds of dollars at Home Depot, his wife woke up to see a lone iguana eating the last flower off one of their newly planted trees.

“She lost her proverbial (explicative,)” he said. “She told me I needed to kill every last one of the iguanas in the yard if she was going to be happy, and you know, happy wife, happy life.”

The mid-Texas-raised self-proclaimed “redneck from way back” has been a Key Wester for 25 years and says even four years ago iguana weren’t really that prevalent. Now, they are taking over everything, he said, noting that Puerto Rico, where they are also an invasive species, now has 8 million iguanas to the 4 million people population. “They have expeditions to help with the eradication efforts over there, and it’s needed here, too, or we are going to have the same problem.”

But, he’s not killing them for sport.

Legally, iguana, an invasive lizard in the Keys, can be killed humanely.

Iguana hunter Chuck Meier prefers a quick kill with a pellet gun headshot, while others prefer trapping and freezing. “I don’t want to see something suffer,” he said. “That’s the hunter in me. I actually like animals more than I probably like people.” CONTRIBUTED

He’s learned to clean and cook them also. Authoring a sportsman guide to hunting, catching, cleaning and cooking them, “Iguana Killer’s Club,” he explains the process. The book will be out in about a month or so.

He said a good starter gun is a break barrel Gamo Whisper air rifle, which is pretty accurate for a backyard enthusiast. Then he skins the lizard.

“It’s like any small game.

It’s a little daunting but with the right technique, they can be skinned easily.” Some countries, like Trinidad, skip the skinning process and cook the animal with the skin on.

He ate his first iguana about two years ago when a Honduran man saw him with his catch.

“How much you want for those,” the man asked him. “Whatcha got,” he replied. Four Bud Lights later, the man was showing him the ways of iguana cooking, and got even more excited to see one of the iguanas was egg-bearing.

“Hondurans really like the eggs,” Meier said, adding that the

leathery eggs are often served in a picante-like sauce. “They are said to be an aphrodisiac and have medicinal capabilities.”

The Honduran told him to eat one and he’d be “chasing his old lady around the house.” Meier replied, “How about you feed that to my wife instead.”

His wife, although she would prefer a steak, doesn’t mind eating the iguana. Meier explains that the meat is lean with no fat, a lot like chicken, with white meat in the tail, and darker meat around the leg.

When asked if he expects to see iguana pop up on local menus, he said definitely. “I have given it to a few chefs in town who really liked working with it,” he said. He often has one chef, of Jose’s Latin Food on the corner of Truman and White streets, do iguana night for his friends, prepared Nicaraguan style, five different ways, from tamale-like to stir-fried, and soups to barbecued.

“South American countries eat it like it’s going out of style,” he said.

“We need to get that mentality here, too. It’s technically a renewable resource here, they are so out of control.”

Both chicken and iguana can carry salmonella, so proper preparation is needed but the risks are the same. Cleaning hands and surfaces that the raw meat touches is key to preventing food poisoning.
