There is always a conundrum on the political plate of Key West. Seemingly we can’t get away from a little bit of controversy here and there, especially when it comes to the amphitheater. Now that it’s almost finished, what do we name it?

Do we name it after an actual person? Should that person be alive? ( I think there are some Cosby buildings being renamed as we speak ...) Do we sell the name to the highest bidder? Can we actually agree on a name? So we asked locals …

What do we name the new amphitheater?

“Bum Fartodome,” said David Salay.

Hey, any time we can reference Bum Farto, we’re in.

“Half Shell Arena, of course,” said Michael Behmke. Beach, shell, makes sense.

“Key West’s Waterfront Amphitheater because...Hey! We are in Key West and it’s at the waterfront,” said Tina Newman. “NOTHING for Jimmy Buffett ... he even charges his own ‘Parrot’s Club’ for a show when they are in town!”

“I would go with Jimmy Buffett,” said Linda Russin. “Everyone is against him, but I like what he’s doing with Margaritaville for senior citizens.”

“I am usually against naming it for anyone,” said Barry Gibson, who has been an instrumental pioneer behind making the amphitheater a reality.

T

he typical Keys worker is NOT napping in a hammock at noon, under the palm trees, with an empty bottle of Corona dangling from his fingers. Repeat, not.

Consider this — the Keys’ unemployment rate stands at 2.8 percent, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In Miami, it’s about 5 percent.

Second, many Keys workers have more than one job. Some say it takes two or even three jobs to “make it” in the Keys due to the high cost of living. According to the United Way’s ALICE report, the “survival” budget for a family of four is $62,000. That only covers basic necessities such as housing, food, transportation, child care and health care.

To celebrate Labor Day, the Weekly newspaper covered the islands from Key Largo to Key West, asking locals about their jobs. There’s a slew of variety and a little humor in their responses published in this issue.

One final note: longtime locals like to say that the work falls off during the summer, as fewer tourists are visiting.

Through 24 years of anecdotal and personal experience, I can say that’s a damn lie. Either folks haven’t updated their opinions to match reality, or this is an inconvenient truth they bury to make themselves feel just a tiny bit better about the volume of effort we put into our Keys lifestyle that rarely calls for a hammock and a palm tree.

M

ark Finigan is a native Conch and has had a hand in the city finances for quite a while now.

He started with the city in 1989 as budget director until 1997, and from 2008 -2014 was assistant city manager.

And since 2015, Finigan has held the title of finance officer.

The most interesting part about his job?

“Diversity,” he said. “The scope of work in the Finance Department can range from investment monitoring to budget preparation – with anything financial in between. The stereotype ‘pencil pusher’ is a myth.”

A

native Conch, Monica Muñoz attended Key West High and University of Florida and returned home to work for one of Key West’s largest national corporations, Historic Tours of America.

For 15 years, Muñoz has dealt with everything from advertising, to graphic design, to sending out newsletters to more than 1,300 employees.

Historic Tours of America is headquartered in Key West, but operates in seven cities, which Muñoz gets to visit and work in as well.

“I love the diversity in all the cities,” said Muñoz, “and especially Key West.

I get to work with all aspects and areas of Key West.”

Jordan Budnik

J

ordan Budnik recently took on the duties of assistant executive director of the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary in the Upper Keys. A graduate of Georgia College & State University, Budnik said working as an environmental and wildlife educator has always been her dream job. “I was raised by a family that was extremely supportive,” she said.

Her favorite part of the new job is getting to interact with the community and teach them about raptors (and no, not velociraptors – birds of prey are referred to as raptors.) She recently conducted educational programs for REEF’s summer camp and put on education-based games that introduced kids to birds they wouldn’t normally be around.

WILDLIFE EDUCATOR Book series as a child and has always been fascinated with animals. Her favorites are reptiles.

“My parents had to sprint after me when I went outside because I always wanted to pick up every snake and lizard I came across,” she said.

By fifth grade she could identify all types of birds, so when she began working as a “volun-teen” at Zoo Atlanta, it was an easy switch.

Her daily life at the sanctuary includes a lot of educating, planning, networking, and dance-offs with the birds.

Even though Labor Day should be spent relaxing, Budnik is planning to visit Biscayne National Park to help park rangers celebrate Vulture Awareness Day. — GABRIEL SANCHEZ

lex Ruiz has been a car salesman for two decades and with Kia for the past 12 years.

When KIA asked him to transfer from Fort Pierce to Key West, he jumped at the opportunity for the easier Keys lifestyle.

“It’s family-oriented; people are pretty easy to work with in Key West,” said Ruiz. The only real must-have for cars? Air-conditioning.

Will he always be a car salesman? Yes, but he is still hoping to win the lotto one day.

avid Ciuffetelli is easily recognizable with his friendly face and helpful manner, but also, he has been doing his job for 24 years.

Ciuffetelli has lived in Key West since 1989 and is an active member of the MARC house community. He applied for a job at Fausto’s in 1993 and has been helping bag, stock shelves and do various jobs, keeping Fausto’s running smoothly.

“I like doing my job for the customers, being polite and friendly,” said Ciuffetelli. His boss, Jimmy Weekley, said with a smile, “Ciuffetelli is very punctual; he has lunch every day at 11 and punches out at exactly 2:30!”

randon Beach is known for his acting, which he has been doing in Key West for the past decade, but offstage he is also the one fixing the lights and making sure the show goes on, literally, as the technical director at The Key West Theater. He studied acting in New York but also technical theater in college, which was a good call. A year ago, when faced with working on a boat as a full-time gig – another job he is proficient at – the job opened up at the Theater and Beach leaped at the chance.

“I was really fortunate this opened up,” he said.

know-how. The biggest obstacle is equipment, as the nearest “light bulb” could be in Miami and Beach has to keep a “back line” of equipment for any circumstance in case it’s not available in Key West. His favorites shows have been the shows for bands Get The Lead Out and Here Come the Mummies. But just because he is usually offstage doesn’t stop him from going back on. Beach was in the Theater’s production of “Oklahoma Smith.”

“Doing Oklahoma was great,” he said, “but it almost killed me. From building the set to being on the set, I went four days sleeping on the theater’s couch.” A true theater geek in the best possible way.

o be a tour guide operator takes a particular skill set. You need to be able to handle a kayak, have a good idea of the geography, be an amateur meteorologist, understand the ecosystem and its inhabitants plus all the things that come along with running your own business — web design, promotion, bookkeeping, etc.

Daniel Lonergan has been doing it for more than three years in the Middle Keys. More than anything, he said, “You’ve got to be a bit of an entertainer as well.”

“Nature doesn’t always cooperate,” he said. “I’ve learned to make a single frigate sighting into a five-minute discussion. But even the Cassiopea (upside down) jelly fish that are

His tours depart from Sombrero Beach and navigate through the many mangrove trails of Boot Key. He also offers customized tours for clients with specific interests.

Lonergan moved to the Keys after receiving a degree from Flagler University in St. Augustine. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, he said the Keys have a familiar feel.

“As soon as I came over the bridges, it reminded me of home,” he said. “I’ve always been on the water; this came second nature to me.”

Donavon Frankenreiter returns to Key West

L

ike an old friend coming to visit again, musician Donavon Frankenreiter can’t get enough of Key West.

Coming back for his third concert and third interview with the Keys Weekly, it’s clear the surfer songster fits in with the Key West musical vibe. At The Key West Theater on Sunday, Sept. 3, expect to hear that laid-back homegrown beach sound that resonates year after year. Originally from California, Frankenreiter later adopted Hawaii as his home base and happily shares the same musical genre with musicians such as fellow Hawaiian Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and G-Love — and they all happen to be friends.

“This will be our 33rd show in a row and I am pretty sure we will be warmed up,” laughed Frankenreiter, who plans on playing a couple of hits from all his albums during the show. Afterward he will head home to Hawaii, “to get back to surfing,” and hanging with his sons, who are 14 and 10 and already writing and playing music.

They have a jump on dear old dad, who didn’t begin his solo career until the age of 30. Back then, although he was playing music, Frankenreiter wasn’t working on songwriting. Just for his wife, he finally wrote his first song, “On My Mind,” which led to a record deal and his most popular album, “Donavon Frankenreiter,” featuring other hits like “It Don’t Matter” and “Free.”

“I escape through my music,” said Frankenreiter, “and concerts are about coming together and sharing a moment.” Who can deny that with his song “Life, Love & Laughter” a hit that generally gets the audience dancing and singing?

But Frankenreiter isn’t just playing his own hits lately; check out his new band, Jamtown. It’s a songwriting trio with Cisco Adler and fellow Key West favorite, GLove, creating sounds reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Frankenreiter is excited to finish up touring and begin working on the band’s first album that he hopes will be out next spring. Maybe next year, we can expect to jam down with Jamtown, as they say.

BRIEFLY Relief for victims of Hurricane Harvey Florida Keys officials are beginning to coordinate efforts for Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas. At press time, there were few details to share.

“I think we have to wait a bit,” said Monroe County Emergency Management Officer Marty Senterfitt. He said rescue operations are still underway.

Until roads are passable and shipments have a dry place to be stored, there’s not much that can be done besides raising funds.

Publix customers can make donations at the register to the American Red Cross. Also, Tito’s Vodka, headquartered in Texas, will match donations made to the American Red Cross up to $50,000.

Top 10 songs for Labor Day 1. Money for Nothing, Dire Straits

U

nder the radar. That’s the best way to describe Derik Reay and the Key West music scene. With one of the most gifted, musical ears and an incredible passion for music in general, D-Rey, as he is known, surprised even his best friends when his talents were suddenly exposed. As Nick Norman began working on his second album “It’s About Time,” Reay started pitching in and helping record the early tracks out of Nick’s home. As the album progressed and recording eventually shifted over to what is now a recording studio at the Key West Theater, Reay became more and more involved and eventually co-produced the entire album with Norman.

Born and raised in the Columbus, Ohio area, Reay began his musical journey playing the saxophone in the fifth grade band and began to play the guitar around age 15, in various bands in and around Columbus. Upon learning of a friend’s impending divorce in December 2006, Reay quit his job and moved to Key West to help him get through the situation. “I moved down to help out a friend,” he said. “That was 9 years ago and he is happily re-married with two children, living in Philadelphia and I am here.

School of Rock band at the Bahama Village Music program last year. Reay continues to play guitar and has also become a fixture behind the drum set, playing alongside other Key West musicians Norman, James Whitehead and Joal Rush at gigs around town. These days you can find him performing regularly playing the cajon and singing backup harmony with Whitehead, and with the Naturals band: Mondays from noon to 3 p.m. at the Blue Macaw and from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock Café; Wednesdays and Fridays from 6 to 9 at Dante’s, and every other Thursday with Norman at Island Dogs.

T

he view at The Afterdeck is one that can’t be beat in Key West, overlooking the ocean and off the beaten path of busy Duval Street; it’s one of the reasons bartender Terry has been there for the past 12 years. “The office view isn’t so bad,” he said, even on a rainy Friday afternoon. “Plus, I have good locals and good visitors who come by here.”

He said the most popular drinks are the mojitos – they offer two, the regular and the uptown – but his favorite to make are the margaritas. “We use raw sugar and I put a lot of love into the drinks,” he said, about what makes his margaritas special.

Upstairs, he suggests the skirt steak tacos with a lime aioli, pico de gallo, and fried avocado. Downstairs at Louie’s he suggests the filet mignon, topped with blue cheese and a green peppercorn sauce.

After moving to Key West from Massachusetts, he knew this is where he would call home. When he isn’t bartending, he’s spending time with his about-to-turn 6-year-old son, Fenway, and likes playing golf at Key West Golf Club.

STAIRSTEPS OF HISTORY

A

section of the stairway used in the filming of “The Rose Tattoo” has been salvaged and added to the Tennessee Williams Exhibit in Key West.

Dennis Beaver, founder and curator of the exhibit, 513 Truman Ave., salvaged the steps from the former Glynn Archer Elementary School, now Key West City Hall. The movie was filmed in Key West, with many locals as extras.

The steps – at the time of the filming, part of Key West High School – were the site of a romantic exchange between characters Rosa and Jack, played by Marisa Pavan and Ben Cooper.

In January, Beaver, a history buff and Williams enthusiast whose collection of the great American playwright’s memorabilia launched the Key West exhibit, discovered that the stairs were being removed from the property and request a section.

“The Rose Tattoo” was adapted from Williams’ play of the same name and premiered at the San Carlos Institute on Duval Street in 1956.

Williams lived in Key West from 1941 until his death in 1983.

The Tennessee Williams Exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free; donations are welcome. For more information or a curator-led tour, contact Beaver at exhibit@twkw.org.

The Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition is holding its annual Tot Swap Consignment Sale Sept. 19 through 24 next to K-mart in Key West. The event is open to the public. n Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m., Key West Art & Historical Society curator Cori Convertito will offer a special tour of The Society’s renovated Custom House Museum exhibit “Overseas to the Keys: Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway.” The permanent exhibit celebrates an important part of Florida Keys history and the incredible engineering feat that joined mainland Florida to Key West — an overseas train they said couldn’t be done.

Convertito will guide guests through a detailed look at some of the historic and unique treasures in the permanent exhibit located on the second floor and the reasons they were selected, including: the original railroad car that debuted in the 2012 exhibit that transports visitors back to the early 1900s when Key West

first connected to mainland Florida; Flagler’s development of Florida’s east coast and how his railway leapfrogged across the Keys all the way to Key West; an oversized map of the Keys; home video shot from the railroad in the 1920s; and newly acquired objects and ephemera from the society’s permanent collection.

Convertito hopes the renovations will “provide a more comprehensive experience for visitors” and help them “wholly appreciate the engineering feat involved in constructing the Overseas Railway.”

PRESSURE BUILDS OVER HAWK MISSILE SITE

Advocates hope for recreational fields

C

ontrary to previous reports, the idea of renovating the Hawk Missile Site into recreational fields is not dead in the water. Although Commissioner Billy Wardlow called the potential $4.9 million project “too far out of reach” at the last city commission meeting, parents and advocates for more recreational fields are not taking “no” for an answer.

The issue is gaining traction with a newly developed Facebook page “Youth Recreation Action Committee,” and a petition demanding the city address the issue. The committee is claiming the 43.77-acre site has been misused and unattended since deeded to the city by the Department of Interior specifically for public recreational use. Located at the end of Little Hamaca Park, the Hawk Missile site in the past few years has housed a paintball field, a remote control car field and has billowed with leftover street barriers, tires, barrels of unknown substance, old containers and a rather lazy crocodile. Inarguably, it looks more like a junkyard than a city park.

“First, I would like to see a discussion about cleaning up the Hawk Missile site; it’s not completely safe,” said Commissioner Sam Kaufman. “Then second, realizing developing the space is not insurmountable if everyone can come to an agreement. It’s a reality, there is definitely a lack of field space for kids.”

Kaufman is trying to find viable options between the city and parents by holding a forum at Poinciana School on Sept. 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. – the night before the next Commission meeting. He admits he is not entirely sure where the price of $4.9 million came from with plans for two fields and 12 pickleball courts, but believes renovating the site can be done in stages for less money. For example, creating one turf field to start would be in the range of $600,000 to $700,000. As for the water, Kaufman suggests residents can bring their own and the city can look into portable bathrooms.

Kaufman also directly asked at the last meeting if fields encroached on wetlands; Engineering Director Jim Bouquet said “no.”

It was Bouquet and Senior Project Manager Steve McAlearney at the meeting who initially outlined the site’s hurdles as conservation easements, land use controls, restriction for lighting tower height by federal aviation rules, permit issues and lastly, no water supply to provide bathrooms. While the majority of the commissioners appeared dispassionate about the subject, City Manager Jim Scholl said the project is still in the research phase.

“We will respond formally at the next commission meeting,” he said. “The $4.9 million estimate to build fields was an estimate that is still the planning factor. However, we have not heard from the FAA about light towers. We have environmental obligations that may also be a show stopper. We are not done with the evaluation. It will take time.”

kay, mountain climbing isn’t exactly a profession. But it comes damn close when it takes up a considerable amount of your disposable income and a tremendous amount time for training. So, the Weekly feels fairly confident with the following statement: Marathon’s Martin Sykut is a heckin’ mountain climber.

Earlier this year, he made the summit of Aconcagua in Argentina — one of the famed seven summits. It’s a huge accomplishment to climb 22,838 feet, especially when you spend 50 weeks of the year at 3 feet above sea level.

He made the trip solo, after tons of research, without a guide or any other companions. And he did it fast — eight days to the summit, two days down the mountain.

“The biggest obstacle is the altitude. There’s zero preparations for that,” he said, adding that he arrived at “first camp” only to wake up with a blazing headache, so bad he thought he would have to cancel the mission, but was able to save himself with a single ibuprofen.

“The last two hours is a struggle. I won’t lie,” Martin said of the summit. “To climb mountains you have to be physically fit, which I am.”

Three times a week he goes for a “light” run — seven miles in about 50 minutes. Twice a week he bikes “only” 15 to 20 miles. On Saturday he does a triathlon — a 1-mile swim, 50-mile bike ride and 3- to 6-mile run.

“That’s an endurance workout. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon that’s a good one, a tough one.”

Oh, and he lost two toenails on the climb. “I had to squeeze my teeth and suffer,” said the Poland native who makes a living in the Keys as a caretaker and private tennis coach.

Martin spends months planning and training for his annual mountain-climbing trek. He’s summited about 10 major peaks, including his first — Mount Rainier, which is a measly 14,411 feet above sea level. The planning and execution have so many variables — permits, conditions, equipment. Any sour note could throw a year of planning out the window. Of the Aconcagua trip he said, “The weather was beautiful, everything was perfect. Most expeditions take an entirety of about two and a half weeks. I finished in two weeks. It was a pretty big accomplishment.”

views were recorded on a recent post shared from the Facebook page “Florida Keys Iguana Killers Club.” The death threats are usually from ladies in New Jersey or New York with 27 cats and two lizards as pets, according to the page’s founder, Chuck Meier, who has been in the iguana eradication “business” for three or four years now. “(People who don’t live here) don’t understand that they are an invasive species here,” he said. “I try to explain to them to replace the word ‘iguana’ with ‘rat’ or ‘cockroach,’ but it usually doesn’t sink in, mainly because they are from up north and don’t have an issue with iguanas because they have winters.”

After planting his yard with new plants and spending hundreds of dollars at Home Depot, his wife woke up to see a lone iguana eating the last flower off one of their newly planted trees.

“She lost her proverbial (explicative,)” he said. “She told me I needed to kill every last one of the iguanas in the yard if she was going to be happy, and you know, happy wife, happy life.”

The mid-Texas-raised self-proclaimed “redneck from way back” has been a Key Wester for 25 years and says even four years ago iguana weren’t really that prevalent. Now, they are taking over everything, he said, noting that Puerto Rico, where they are also an invasive species, now has 8 million iguanas to the 4 million people population. “They have expeditions to help with the eradication efforts over there, and it’s needed here, too, or we are going to have the same problem.”

But, he’s not killing them for sport.

He’s learned to clean and cook them also. Authoring a sportsman guide to hunting, catching, cleaning and cooking them, “Iguana Killer’s Club,” he explains the process. The book will be out in about a month or so.

Legally, iguana, an invasive lizard in the Keys, can be killed humanely.

Iguana hunter Chuck Meier prefers a quick kill with a pellet gun headshot, while others prefer trapping and freezing. “I don’t want to see something suffer,” he said. “That’s the hunter in me. I actually like animals more than I probably like people.” CONTRIBUTED

He said a good starter gun is a break barrel Gamo Whisper air rifle, which is pretty accurate for a backyard enthusiast. Then he skins the lizard.

“It’s like any small game. It’s a little daunting but with the right technique, they can be skinned easily.” Some countries, like Trinidad, skip the skinning process and cook the animal with the skin on.

He ate his first iguana about two years ago when a Honduran man saw him with his catch. “How much you want for those,” the man asked him.

“Whatcha got,” he replied. Four Bud Lights later, the man was showing him the ways of iguana cooking, and got even more excited to see one of the iguanas was egg-bearing.

“Hondurans really like the eggs,” Meier said, adding that the leathery eggs are often served in a picante-like sauce. “They are said to be an aphrodisiac and have medicinal capabilities.”

The Honduran told him to eat one and he’d be “chasing his old lady around the house.” Meier replied, “How about you feed that to my wife instead.”

His wife, although she would prefer a steak, doesn’t mind eating the iguana. Meier explains that the meat is lean with no fat, a lot like chicken, with white meat in the tail, and darker meat around the leg.

When asked if he expects to see iguana pop up on local menus, he

said definitely. “I have given it to a few chefs in town who really liked working with it,” he said. He often has one chef, of Jose’s Latin Food on the corner of Truman and White streets, do iguana night for his friends, prepared Nicaraguan style, five different ways, from tamalelike to stir-fried, and soups to barbecued.

“South American countries eat it like it’s going out of style,” he said. “We need to get that mentality here, too. It’s technically a renewable resource here, they are so out of control.”

Both chicken and iguana can carry salmonella, so proper preparation is needed but the risks are the same. Cleaning hands and surfaces that the raw meat touches is key to preventing food poisoning.

“M

omentum is everything when you are throwing a cast net,” said fisherman Riley Young. For the past four years, April and May stay busy for the 2014 Marathon High School graduate. At 16, Byron Goss taught him the technique and after receiving a tech degree for marine mechanics, the ocean called on him.

“At least when something breaks on the boat, I have an idea on what it is,” he said.

He wakes in the wee hours of the morning, and has the boat launched by 5:30 a.m.: the mullet run during tarpon season. He sells the bait to local bait shops and charter captains and follows the bait run up and down the Keys.

“The most I have caught in a single throw is 15 dozen,” he said, while showing younger generations the trade. His boss and friend, Justin Bruland, brings his nephew on the boat on the weekends to help.

And, in four years, he’s only fallen overboard once, at 6 a.m.

eing a server in the Keys is known to be a lucrative job, and Jessika Rady, who works upstairs at Square Grouper’s My New Joint, knows that. For the past 15 years of waiting tables or bartending in the Keys, she’s been at The Joint since the day it opened two and a half years ago. “It’s a great place to work because we have year-round clientele, since the locals love it here,” she said.

The mom of two boys likes the flexible schedule working at a restaurant offers. “I am spoiled by my coworkers who really help me out when the kids have something going on,” she said. “I don’t miss out on their activities because of the flexibility.”

Her favorite part of working at My New Joint is the menu. “I am gluten free, and they offer a wide variety of items I can eat,” she said. When she is visiting other restaurants, she looks for great service and a great menu.

“You apprentice for two years.

Hollon met the current owner of the shop, Allen Mertsock, while honeymooning in the Keys. Hollon said Mertsock was instrumental in luring him to the Keys with his wife.
