United Way offers financial literacy classes United Way of the Florida Keys is offering free financial literacy classes.

Classes will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Center for Independent Living in Key Largo, and on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Key Largo library. Classes run just over an hour and materials are provided. The classes are open to anyone and include instruction on how to increase income, decrease spending, track spending habits, create a budget, prioritize financial goals, and create specific and achievable personal finance plans. State recognizes Key Largo School teacher The Florida Department of Education has recognized Key Largo School’s Samantha Hopper with the Mary J. Brogan “Excellence in Teaching” award.

An employee of a corporation with a lucrative secret process is tempted to betray it and gets caught in a web of double-crosses and murder. n anticipation of the upcoming Fish with a Hero event, the Islamorada Fish Company will be hosting a fundraiser on Aug. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. The fundraiser will help raise money so 25 wounded heroes can experience four days of fun and relaxation, as participants in Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing programs.

Fish with a Hero is scheduled to run between Tuesday, Sept. 19 and Friday, Sept. 22. Local captains have devoted two full days of world-class guided fishing to injured active-duty personnel and veterans with a disability.

Local captains supporting the event are Capt. Harp Heffernan of Allicat Fishing Charters, Capt. Carlos Jimenez of Gringo Charters, Capt.

Richard Logan of Reel Pursuit Fishing, Capt. Norm Bekoff of Finest Kind Sport Fishing, Capt. Steve Lavoie, Capt. Chris Barron of Stray Cat Fishing Charters, Capt. Toll booth won’t close until Sept. 1 The closing date for Monroe County’s Card Sound Bridge toll booth is being delayed to Sept. 1, 2017. This change will allow Florida Power & Light time to relocate its power lines on the right of way prior to the start of construction of the all electronic tolling system.

Tolls will be collected and discount tickets will continue to be accepted until Sept. 1. After the toll booth closes, unused tickets may be returned for a refund.

During construction, which is scheduled to last 189 days, there will be no tolls. Some lane closures will take place. Those closures will be publicized when the schedule is known.

O

ne of the Florida Keys’ most popular fish to catch and eat, the hogfish, is subject to some serious commercial and recreational changes. Starting Aug. 24, the bag limit off the Keys for hogfish has been dropped from five fish per person per day to one. Also, the fork length off the Florida Keys is now raised from 12 to 16-inch fork length; In Gulf waters, north of Cape Sable, to 14-inch fork length.

To be clear, Monroe County waters south of Cape Sable are considered Atlantic waters, not Gulf. So, here’s where it gets a little confusing. The federal government is closing the recreational season in federal waters early, and commercial is closing in state and federal waters, but not the Gulf. State waters heed the 16-inch fork length and bag limit changes, but have not, yet, changed the closure.

So, how does this affect the Keys?

If you are a recreational fisherman in state waters, which extend three nautical miles offshore in the Atlantic side and nine nautical miles offshore on the Gulf side, recreational harvesting of one 16-inch or bigger hogfish is still allowed through Oct. 31, 2017. This season may close earlier if the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission decides to mimic the federal early closure at the FWC meeting taking place in Okeechobee Sept. 27-28. But, as of now, recreational catching of hogfish is still permitted in state waters with the closure happening Oct. 31 through

May 1, 2018. Fresh local hogfish will reappear on menus starting Jan. 1, 2018, when the commercial season in state and federal waters will reopen.

Snook season opens Sept. 1 with no new changes, and the Saltwater License Free Fishing Day takes place statewide on Sept. 2.

Recreational fishermen can harvest one hogfish in state waters which extend three nautical miles offshore on the Atlantic side, and nine nautcal miles offshore on the Gulfside.

The goliath grouper’s future The Florida Keys public input workshops regarding possible limited harvesting of goliath grouper took place last month in several locations. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be discussing the goliath grouper ban at its December meeting and is still hosting statewide workshops.

“It’s been dependent on where we have been,” said Amanda Nalley, public information

coordinator for the FWC’s Division of Marine Fisheries Management about the grouper’s fate. “It’s a complex topic and it hasn’t been one-sided on whether we should open it, or keep it closed.”

“I expected the stress, but what I learned this week is that the child goes through a grieving process very similar to the death of a loved one.” She said they learned about behaviors to expect and how to help them work through it.

Myth: My children are grown and out of the house. I’m too old to be a foster parent. Fact: There is no age requirement (other than you must be at least 21). Many “empty nesters” find foster parenting to be a rewarding experience.

hroughout the morning and afternoon of Aug. 19, prospective foster parents visited the Key Largo Lions Club for Marrvelous Pet Rescues’ Clear the Shelter event. The Key Largo-based rescue celebrated its 10th birthday, and more than 1,000, adoptions, in style. Visitors had a chance to meet and interact with the animals in hopes of potentially finding their newest family members, while others simply relished the opportunity to pet some pups and enjoy the day’s activities.

Aside from the doggie day spa, nail trimmings, and microchip clinic, humans also got to rummage through goodies and participate in a painting class.

held on August 19 at the Ron Levy Aquatic Center at Founders Park. Before the action started, athletes from Monroe County carried out the opening ceremony duties. Kai Simcic-Swanton hoisted the Olympic torch, Vincent Janecka paraded the nation’s flag, Rosemary Skrobot led the recital of the pledge of allegiance, and Michael Neri led in reciting the athlete’s oath. More than 110 athletes from Miami-Dade joined Monroe County for the games.

Bernadette Martin, senior manager for sports training competition for Miami Dade County, has been a part of her local Special Olympics program for two years and says the experience is “an amazing time,” for the athletes.

“You can see the passion on their faces. I think it’s very enriching for Special Olympics to have an area event like this where we can come together as two counties and have an amazing event for the athletes. I’ve gotten two or three hugs on the way out saying ‘thank you,’ so you can feel the impact.

We’re miles apart but we come as one team to have this.”

“We are Area 11,” added Monroe County Special Olympics coordinator Ruth Holland. “It’s two counties, but we get a lot done.”

They have a lot of fun too.

ilates in Paradise recently celebrated 15 years in business and held an open house for guests to check out its new Tavernier location. Once at four locations, the local chain of Pilates studios has coupled its Islamorada and Key Largo studios in Tavernier.

Owner Christi Allen says Pilates in Paradise has grown in terms of what the studio has to offer, thanks to consolidating equipment and recent additions to its team. Alongside Allen, the staff consists of Kerri Bender, Nicole Alvarez, Norma Jean Nolan and James Buckley.

Key Largo restaurant owner CJ Berwick has been working with the Pilates in Paradise team since the studio opened its doors 15 years ago. Initially joining because of a shoulder injury, Berwick stayed with Pilates in Paradise even after she healed.

“I had a frozen shoulder and was going to physical therapy at Mariners Hospital at the time. I felt that Pilates would help address different aspects of healing my frozen shoulder,” said Berwick. “All the instructors are so well trained in anatomy, and are very careful about not overdoing an injured area and working around it.”

Carolyn Cochrane has been with the studio, like Berwick, for 15 years.

Over the years her routine has included both private and group sessions, and says instructors give clients

the attention they need regardless of class size.

“I know I need more one-on-one to make sure what I’m doing is being done properly. Thankfully there are enough instructors for each class that everyone can get the attention they need,” she said.

Cochrane has used Pilates to strengthen an injured back muscle.

She says Pilates has improved function in her back and has helped her correct posture issues.

“It’s been a continuous fight for me to get the strength in the side of my back that has scar tissue. When they cut away the muscle from the bone in my back, my doctor recommend I try Pilates or yoga. I’m not very good at yoga because my balance has been off, but Pilates strengthened my core, helped my balance, and kept the side with scar tissue from contracting and causing more problems.”

What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you?

I am involved in various clubs and sports at Coral Shores including Lacrosse, Canettes, National Honor Society, Interact, Environmental Club, and am currently Student Government President. I love that each activity allows me to meet a whole group of people with similar interests, and how we are constantly striving to improve our school and community.

Which class or teacher has best prepared you for life after high school and why?

I have been a part of the Leadership program and a class officer since my freshman year. This class and Ms. Rosenow have taught me how to be a leader and deal with a wide variety of situations. It has also given me something to look forward to everyday and created countless unforgettable memories for not only myself, but every student at CSHS. The obstacles and successes have allowed me to get to know myself better and have prepared for whatever I choose to do next.

What advice would you give underclassmen?

Get involved. Of course having a wide variety of extracurricular looks good on paper and resumes, but I really believe it is the only way to get the most out of your high school career.

The more clubs/sports/activities you are a part of the more experiences you will have and people you will meet.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I hope to be remembered as a leader and a friend.

hen Caroline Guyer began making leather masks by hand in 1999, she never imagined it would become such a prominent part of her creative expression. More unexpected is the way it came about.

It was the ’90s, and Guyer’s then-boyfriend worked at a leather workshop. One day he gave her some scraps of leather to toy around with, and, feeling the need to create something, Guyer created her very first masks.

“Masks are built in steps over a few days. There are a minimum of three drying periods, because they have to treat overnight,” she said.

“I added up the steps for a bigger mask the other day and in all, it took 2 hours from start to finish, over four days. I was shocked that when I looked over my notes, half of the time was spent doing finish work.”

In the following days she returned to the workshop to show the shop owner, Fred Eisen, what she had made. Eisen gave her some tips on how to add a professional finish to her work and agreed to retail the masks simply to see how they would do. The masks became an instant seller.

Then a few years later, Eisen helped Guyer land a fairly large order: 1,000 masks for a private masquerade party in Monaco. It took Guyer almost a year to prepare the order.

Formally known as Teonova Leather Masks, Guyer’s work is growing an impressive resume.

one of her masks, and in the past Absolut Vodka also aired a commercial featuring her work. Her masks have appeared on television shows like “Pretty Little Liars” and “Boardwalk Empire,” and she’s also outfitted masks for the hard rock band, Mushroom Head.

A lot of her masks are of animals – cats, rabbits, foxes, wolves, goats, various dog breeds, birds, lynx, frogs, snakes – she’s made ’em all. But her masks can also turn into spooky oddities like mermaidand merman-inspired adaptations, “devil jesters,” and humanoid trees.

Holidays like Halloween are a busy time of year for Guyer. She’s prepping more than 200 masks for this year, but it was only during Fantasy Fest last year that she first retailed them onsite.

“I feel lucky that I stumbled

into such an obscure craft that I happen to have a knack for, and look forward to working every day, almost two decades later,” she said.

Guyer is looking into licensing and mass producing her masks in the future, but for now is happy to be displaying her work at the yet-to-open Portside Studio & Gallery.

“Committing to the gallery encouraged me to create more elaborate masks than I had in a while,” she said.

She’s unveiling a special mask, the largest she’s ever made, for the Sept. 15 grand opening of the gallery. Guyer’s masks retail from $25 to $300 based on the complexity, molding, size and detail. Find them at www.teonova.etsy.com.

Hungry Tarpon

W

hen you approach the bar at the Hungry Tarpon you’ll notice two things – dollar bills lining every possible inch of bar space, and Tim Goodwin’s biceps. Those guns come from mixing thousands of Trailer Trash Bloody Marys over the years. At the height of busy season, Goodwin says he makes about 800 to 1,000 a week. That’s a lot of reps. The Trailer Trash Bloody Mary comes complete with cucumber infused vodka, bleu cheese, pickle, garlic olives, pickled green beans, a crispy strip of bacon, celery, meat straw, and shrimp.

The San Diego native started bartending more than 20 years ago, and has worked at a few other Upper Keys locations. Since settling in as bar manager at the Hungry Tarpon he’s added his personal touch to the bar. “This is a Chargers bar,” said Goodwin, pointing to the lightning bolts decorating the tip jars. Goodwin is a man of his word. A couple years ago he lost a friendly bet to the bassist of Bag of Trixx when the Dolphins and Chargers faced-off. The next week he bartended for a day wearing a wig and dress, even after friends suggested he pay his debt in cash. What a guy.
