From family picnics to birthday parties, a place to teach your kid to fish or snorkel, the ultimate hammock spot or place to read, paint, and even take a yoga class. Ft. Zach is why we live here. So how does everyone feel about sharing it with 10,000 others for a three- to five-day music festival? And once the first festival is approved, imagine many more to come.

And note, this is completely separate from the new Amphitheater, which taxpayers just built for this very purpose. So we asked locals ...

Should Ft. Zach turn into a festival venue?

“No, they’re going to destroy it,” said Raquel Gonzalez Sassone. “It will be too busy so families couldn’t go and there will be absolutely no parking.”

“I say no, it’s our only nice beach,” said Teresa Kinee. “Why can’t they just have concerts at the amphitheater?”

“No,” said Kevin Kenny, 8. “They can have a party there, like for one day, but it’s only fair to everyone else to make it only one day.”

“Why aren’t we just using the amphitheater; it’s what we built it for,” said chef Martin Liz. “I think it sends a contradictory message, to put all this money and effort into the amphitheater then permit other venues.”

“The park is too small for such a crowd-drawing venue. There’s no parking, no bathrooms, no shelters and the concessions are limited to what can service the beach folks,” said Linda Grist Cunningham. “There are many days, especially during high season, the park closes its entrance gates because they’ve maxed out the parking.

How is it possible to add music festival attendees on top of the regular daily beach folks?”

W

ell over 6 feet tall, Matt Babich is quite a presence in Key West. Whether standing out in a crowd or making a difference in Key West, he’s mastered the art of going above and beyond. Originally from Detroit, his degree in economics didn’t stop him from being a humble bellman at the Hotel Wildwood to eventually working his way up to top brass here in warm Key West. For three decades, Babich has contributed in so many ways to our community: by being president of Key West Hotel and Motel Association, president of Key West Sunrise Rotary and chairman of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC).

And his work hasn’t gone unnoticed; he won Florida Keys and Key West Lodging Association General Manager of the year (2002, 2013), City of Key West Green Commute Challenge(2016, 2017), City of Key West Clean and Green award, Florida Keys and Key West Property of the Year, and TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and Hall of Fame award. Whew!

But his best contribution? Beerfest!

“As President of the Key West Sunrise Rotary I came to the realization our club needed to raise more funds to help out those in need in our community,” said Babich, who has helped sock away $230,000 for the community by simply being a Key Wester.

“Brewfest, or a beer summit, was something I thought Key West needed because we all like to drink beer when it is hot outside!”

Nothing worthwhile is every easy.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything? Never ever thought I would move to Florida; couldn’t stand the place. However, never made it to Key West until I interviewed to be GM at Southernmost Motel in the USA. I have now lived here longer than anywhere else in my life. I am truly blessed.

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket” list, and one thing you did achieve? Achieved visiting Mont St. Michel, Notre Dame in Paris and D-Day beaches. Still to go — Patagonia, Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat. Funniest hotel story? Guest with Far Eastern accent called down to hotel operator to report a “ticking bomb” under the bed in her room, when it was actually a “chicken bone.”

Favorite beer? Beers that include water as an ingredient.

Favorite part of Brewfest? Getting to see so many local beer lovers and raising money for Rotary.

Advice to hotel guests? Get out on the water in America’s “Caribbean Islands,” eat at our plethora of fine restaurants, listen to live music, attend a play, visit our museums and learn our history!

What has the hotel industry taught you about life? We are people taking care of people where guests are the top priority. Or, at least pretend he is your rich uncle who is about to die and filling out his last will and testament.

BRIEFLY Free, reduced admission for Museum Weekend The seventh annual Florida Keys & Key West Museum and Attractions Weekend event, providing free or value-added admission passes to participating museums and attractions in the island chain, is set for Friday through Sunday, Aug. 25-27.

Organized by WLRN, south Florida’s National Public Radio affiliate, in partnership with the Florida Keys tourism council, the program provides a cultural pass for South Florida residents and visitors to discover the history of the Florida Keys by offering free- or reduced-admission incentives to experience more than 20 participating museums and attractions.

The attractions range from Little White House, Butterfly and Nature Conservancy and Key West Aquarium in Key West, to Pigeon Key and Crane Point in Marathon, to the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada.

Title I event slated in Key West The Title I Office, in collaboration with Exceptional Student Education, presents Family Community Academic Day on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon at Bayview Park in Key West.

In collaboration with the Farmer’s Market, the event will provide information and resources to families with students in Title I schools in the Lower Keys. The Monroe County School District hopes to make connections with residents in the community, and provide information and awareness about the programs. The event gives families a chance to get to know the school district outside of the school setting. There will be resources and information for parents and there will be giveaways for kids and parents alike. The library will also be hosting games and crafts during the event.

Lower Keys Alliance focuses on issues The Lower Keys Alliance, Inc., has been formed to give additional voice to the wishes and concerns of residents of the Torch Keys, Ramrod Key, Summerland Key, Cudjoe Key, Sugarloaf Key, and the Saddle Bunch Keys The goal of the Lower Keys Alliance is to focus on issues affecting the quality of life of its members, and to maintain the residential and rural character of their island communities.

The geographical scope of the Lower Keys Alliance spans from mile markers 29 to 14.2 and corresponds with the area covered by the Livable CommuniKeys Plan for the Lower Keys. Membership is voluntary. The Alliance is reaching out to individual residents, as well as property owners associations, civic associations and similar organizations, in the area.

The Lower Keys Alliance intends to work “within the system.” The alliance seeks to collaborate with organizations and individuals who already provide input to decision makers. Effective immediately, the alliance will be informing its members about issues that may have an impact on their communities, and will provide a forum for members to understand and discuss these issues. Where consensus exists, members’ viewpoints and proposals will be presented to elected and appointed decision-makers.

The alliance intends to be around for the long haul and will address the most important issues affecting its members, such as growth and development, parks and recreation, traffic and transportation, water quality and the environment.

In regard to growth and development, it is understood that property rights enable development and redevelopment that conforms to existing zoning and land development codes and the Livable CommuniKeys Plan. Commercial development and redevelopment should continue to provide for the needs of island residents.

Tourism should remain limited to small lodging facilities that cater to environmental and water-based recreational activities.

Affordable/workforce housing should be focused on integrating single-family workforce housing into residential communities and small-scale workforce housing units into new and redeveloped suburban commercial businesses along the U.S. 1 corridor. High-density, multifamily housing is out of character with low-density communities and will exacerbate the traffic problems on U.S. 1 as those residents travel to employment centers in and near Key West and Marathon.

Bennett returns as TDC director

A

former research director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council will succeed retiring TDC Marketing Director Harold Wheeler.

Jessica Bennett, who was the TDC’s research director from 2004 to 2016, was the highest ranking finalist at a special meeting Aug. 22 at the Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club.

Bennett left the TDC to become the consumer insight manager at Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts in central Florida, but revealed that she soon missed the Keys’ “natural beauty and close-knit community.”

“I’m so excited to have Jessica back in the fold,” said TDC Chair Rita Irwin. “Her expertise and knowledge of our destination make her an excellent leader for the TDC’s future.”

Bennett is scheduled to begin Sept. 18. Wheeler’s retirement is set for Sept. 26.

“This is an amazing opportunity and privilege to serve the TDC and the community,” said Bennett.

“Tourism is the economic engine of the Keys.

“The importance of the marketing director’s role is not only to execute the goals and objectives of the TDC, but also to ensure the overall health of the community,” she said.

et’s face it: space is a major commodity in Key West and watching it go unused and disregarded feels a bit shameful.

This is the problem facing May Sands Montessori Public Charter school, which occupies three buildings (Building 100, 200, 300) on United Street and sits adjacent to a larger, unused building 400, that could potentially grow the school and provide more spots for kids as a free educational choice.

“For the 2018 school year we had 75 applicants for only an estimated 21 open seats for lower elementary,” said Principal Lynn Barras, who is trying to make headway with the school board to rehabilitate building 400. There is a pattern of demand for May Sands, which turns away dozens of students every year. In 2016 , there were 70 applicants and only 20 spots available, and in 2017, 70 applicants and only 30 placed. Current enrollment stands at 145 students.

The tuition-free charter school operates K-8 on a lottery system and there were a record 41 applicants for kindergarten alone this year – an indication that many parents are looking for free alternatives for primary education, that will eventually become a need for more secondary. “The 400 building would be used for more free pre-primary and primary alternatives for students in the beginning,” said Barras. May Sands has previously received renovation assistance from the school board for buildings 100, 200 and 300 along with costs fronted by the school. The funding comes from the half-cent sales tax approved in 2014 earmarked to help Monroe County schools. It should be noted May Sands operates in a districtowned facility and is not eligible for separate state funding to support im-

provements. Barras estimates rebuilding costs to be $2 million and schools Superintendent Mark Porter said since it is a district-owned building, May Sands cannot go at it alone.

Back in May 2016, Barras discussed with Porter demolishing the building in the 2016-17 school year but Porter pulled the agenda due to the unfinalized lease. The building was declared unusable in 2012 due to extensive metal corrosion and concrete damage. The first obstacle was settling a long term lease agreement between the school board and May Sands which was approved in June 2017 for 15 years and offers first right of refusal to lease Building 400, but no clear plan has been set for its demolition and reconstruction.

At Tuesday’s school board meeting Porter said that while Florida Statute 7069 mandates that school taxes be shared with charter schools on a perstudent basis, that’s not the case for charter schools that rent or lease from the district. The district volunteers proceeds from the half-cent tax levied locally, but those are generally dedicated to tech investments. At this time, Porter said, there is no set date for the rebuild of the school but the district hopes to work it into the timeline within five years.

HOGFISH RULES CHANGE

ne of the Florida Keys’ most popular fish to catch and eat, the hogfish, is subject to some serious commercial and recreational changes. Starting Aug. 24, the bag limit off the Keys for hogfish has been dropped from five fish per person per day to one. Also, the fork length off the Florida Keys is now raised from 12 to 16-inch fork length; In Gulf waters, north of Cape Sable, to 14-inch fork length.

To be clear, Monroe County waters south of Cape Sable are considered Atlantic waters, not Gulf. So, here’s where it gets a little confusing. The federal government is closing the recreational season in federal waters early, and commercial is closing in state and federal waters, but not the Gulf. State waters heed the 16-inch fork length and bag limit changes, but have not, yet, changed the closure.

So, how does this affect the Keys?

If you are a recreational fisherman in state waters, which extend three nautical miles offshore in the Atlantic side and nine nautical miles offshore on the Gulf side, recreational harvesting of one 16-inch or bigger hogfish is still allowed through Oct. 31, 2017. This season may close earlier if the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission decides to mimic the federal early closure at the FWC meeting taking place

‘WE WANT EVERYONE TO ENJOY IT’ Key West Film Festival is a cinephile’s delight

A

s the saying goes, “If you build it, they will come.” Local native and filmmaker Quincy Perkins is experiencing this firsthand as the director of development with The Key West Film Festival. Key West is fast becoming a mecca of the arts whether it’s music, literature or now film.

This November will be the sixth annual Key West Film Festival, “Passion meets Paradise,” and the organization is gaining recognition both locally and nationally.

Now in his third year with the festival, Perkins admits, “We didn’t have the best relationship with the locals at first, and I don’t think our ideas came across those first couple of years. Now we are so inclusive, we want everyone’s input and everyone to enjoy it.” Last year, residents certainly took notice when Burt Reynolds walked on the stage at the San Carlos, so expect more A-list celebrity appearances in the future (Hint: Oscar A-list if all goes well). Perkins, who has worked with the Toronto and Sundance film festivals, is a

creative force in the industry, implementing different ideas with Key West’s festival.

“We decided to attract the critics first (Los Angeles Times’ Kenneth Turan, Rolling Stone’s David Fear and MTV’s Amy Nicholson will be attending) and that draws the publicists and big studio productions,” he said. “Films can be made or broken by one article.” Drawing toptier movies is one goal, but another is to bring Key West, Perkins’ own hometown, amazing entertainment.

Also, during the festival, movies will be projected on Key West buildings throughout Old Town purely for fun. The Festival itself will play over 35 features films and 50 shorts at The Key West Theater, The Studios Of Key West, the San Carlos, and the Tropic Cinema (which pulled out of previous years but is happy to be involved again).

The festival now is now playing films yearround and membership is up for grabs – and the swag bag is a cinephile’s delight. Seven types of membership offer anywhere from discounted tickets, free tickets to free advertising, VIP exclusives and front row to just about everything. The festival has started “pop up events” and is bringing one major movie a month. This month, San Francisco, Sundance and Seattle Festival winner “Dolores” will be playing at the Key West Theater. Irish Kevin

es, there is a real Irish Kevin. His name is Kevin English, but everyone calls him Irish Kevin. He first came to the U.S. from Ireland in 1986 on a six-month visa. He has been performing since he was 17 years old, and you can find Kevin today as a regular performer at Irish Kevin’s on Duval Street.

Kevin started playing locally at home in Ireland. He left Ireland when he was 23 years old, and became a U.S. citizen in 1990. In November 1992, while based in Boston and playing up and down the East Coast, Kevin visited Key West with a friend. “The first night here, I went to Rumrunners, with my buddy from Ireland, and Pete Jarvis was on stage playing. My buddy asked Pete if I could

get up and play some songs.” After Kevin’s performance, the owner asked Kevin to fill in that week, and he performed every night that week, a non-stop four-hour show, no break. “It went really well, people stayed. At the end of the week the owner asked me to stay. I ended up playing at Rumrunners for six years.”

Besides enjoying performing, Kevin always wanted his own bar, and was looking at places in Key West. He learned Hammerheads was for sale, and opened Irish Kevin’s on a shoestring, running the bar while still performing two shows daily. Next July, it will be 20 years Irish Kevin’s has been open on Duval Street. “No matter when you come in, there will always be a good show.”

“My show is comprised of sing-a-long songs, and interacting comedy with the crowd. Obviously a lot of Irish stuff as well.”

Kevin still performs four shows a week, and is a featured performer every Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m., still doing a four-hour show.

“All the main performers at Irish Kevin’s have been doing it a long time. N.Y. Paulie, John Solinksi, and Jeff Harris are still there.

Jared Hobgood was a wonderful performer everyone loved. Everyone plays four hours, no break. We try to stay humble and make sure we have fun on stage. The audience gets caught up in the show when they see you are having fun. I am very grateful to be able to play music for a living. I’ve been doing it for 30 years.”

R

um Bar’s Jill O’Meara hails from Massachusetts, but has been in Key West for 29 years.

“I came down to escape the real world,” she said “The community and weather, everything about this island, keeps me here.”

Her go-to drink at Rum Bar is simple. Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva over a giant ice cube. “It’s an aged rum, and my favorite thing to serve or sip on,” she said. She’s been serving it, along with rum runners, mojitos and more, at the bar for the past seven years.

The rum’s founder Don Juancho was known for his adventurous spirit and passion for rum, much like O’Meara.

When she isn’t working, she tries to be on the water as much as possible. She also loves traveling and leaves for Portugal in a few days and likes spending time at a cabin she owns in Maine. Her favorite part of Key West: “The fact that I can ride my bicycle anywhere,” she said.

Rum Bar’s specialty remains in the drinks; the bar doesn’t serve food but is happy to have anything on the island delivered to the bar.

The local cats make a home on the porch at 1115 Duval St.

Keys To Be The Change is the most important to me because I get to help lots of kids improve their reading skills.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School?

Shannon Perkins has been such an inspiration to me because she’s always big hearted and kind. She gives back to people in need, and I want to give to other like she does.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school? I think Mr. Kaiser’s Chemistry class has prepared me because I need that if I want to be a physical therapist.

What is your favorite social media and why? Snapchat because you get to see what all of your friends are up to.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? The biggest challenge in the Keys is the flooding after it rains. There isn’t much we can do, but enjoy our rain boots.

What are your plans after high school? I would like to attend University of Central Florida in Orlando and pursue a career in physical therapy.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home?

No, I don’t think so because I love to travel and I would want to explore the world. I know that I will always come back to visit.

F

ormally known as Teonova Leather Masks, Caroline Guyer’s work is growing an impressive resume. Toyota began airing a new commercial this summer featuring one of her masks, and in the past Absolut Vodka also aired a commercial featuring her work. Her masks have appeared on television shows like “Pretty Little Liars” and “Boardwalk Empire,” and she’s also outfitted masks for the hard rock band, Mushroom Head.

Guyer began making leather masks by hand in 1999 and said she never imagined it would become such a prominent part of her creative expression. More unexpected, is the way it came about.

It was the ’90s, and Guyer’s then-boyfriend worked at a leather workshop. One day he gave her some scraps of leather to toy around with, and, feeling the need to create something, Guyer created her very first masks. In the following days she returned to the workshop to show the shop owner, Fred Eisen, what she had made. Eisen gave her some tips on how to add a professional finish to her work and agreed to retail the masks simply to see how they would do. The masks became an instant seller.

“Masks are built in steps over a few days. There are a minimum of three drying periods, because they have to treat overnight,” she said. “I added up the steps for a bigger mask the other day and in all, it took 2 hours from start to finish, over four days. I was shocked that when I looked over

my notes, half of the time was spent doing finish work.”

A lot of her masks are of animals – cats, rabbits, foxes, wolves, goats, various dog breeds, birds, lynx, frogs, snakes – she’s made ’em all. But her masks can also turn into spooky oddities like mermaid- and mermaninspired adaptations, “devil jesters,” and humanoid trees.

Holidays like Halloween are a busy time of year for Guyer. She’s prepping more than 200 masks for this year, but it was only during Fantasy Fest last year that she first retailed them onsite.

One time, with Eisen’s help, Guyer completed a fairly large order: 1,000 masks for a private masquerade party in Monaco. It took Guyer almost a year to prepare the order.

“I feel lucky that I stumbled into such an obscure craft that I happen to

have a knack for, and look forward to working every day, almost two decades later,” she said.

Guyer is looking into licensing and mass producing her masks in the future, but for now is happy to be displaying her work at the yet-to-open Portside Studio & Gallery in the Upper Keys.

“Committing to the gallery encouraged me to create more elaborate masks than I had in a while,” she said.

She’s unveiling a special mask, the largest she’s ever made, for the Sept. 15 grand opening of the gallery, located at 151 Morada Way in the Arts and Cultural District. Guyer’s masks retail from $25 to $300 based on the complexity, molding, size and detail.

Brewfest returns for holiday weekend

f the idea of almost 200 different beers gets your pulse racing, the Key West Brewfest is the place to be.

The Southernmost Beach Resort is teaming up with the Key West Sunrise Rotary of the Conch Republic to host Key West BrewFest From Thursday, Aug. 31 to Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

The 8th annual brewfest features beer lunches, dinners, pool parties and

more plus the Signature Tasting Festival on Saturday, Sept. 2, with nearly 200 beers.

Started in 2010 by Key West Sunrise Rotary and the Southernmost Beach Resort (general manager Matt Babich is a Sunrise Rotary past president and currently sergeant-at-arms), the beerfest raises funds for college scholarships and assistance to local charitable causes. So far, Beerfest has raised more than $230,000.

A highlight of the festival is the Signature Tasting Event on South Beach, on Saturday, Sept. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m.

VIP admission is $75 (online only) and general admission tickets are $40 in advance,and $45 at the door.

Toll booth won’t close until Sept. 1 The closing date for Monroe County’s Card Sound Bridge toll booth is being delayed to Sept. 1. This change will allow Florida Power & Light time to relocate its power lines on the right of way prior to the start of construction of the all electronic tolling system.

Tolls will be collected and discount tickets will continue to be accepted until Sept. 1. After the toll booth closes, unused tickets may be returned for a refund.

During construction, which is scheduled to last 189 days, there will be no tolls. Some lane closures will take place. Those closures will be publicized when the schedule is known.

lmost $4,000 was raised at last weekend’s La Te Da Tea Dance for local Smart Ride Team Mile Markers. “I stand in awe of my teammates and this community,” said rider Donald Dotzauer. “Thank you Key West.” The Smart Ride is a two day, 165-mile biking event from Miami to Key West, taking place Nov. 17 and 18. The ride has raised more than $8.5 million for AIDS service organizations since 2003, including Monroe County’s AIDS Help.
