Fulco urges schools to take students outside GABRIEL SANCHEZ

ive years ago, science teacher Charles Fulco began preparing for the Great American Eclipse that will happen on Monday, Aug. 21.

The longtime teacher turned education consultant was looking for a way to combine his love of astronomy and educating teachers to get kids learning about science outside. So Fulco took his act on the road and gained the support of the American Astronomical Society and NASA. This year’s solar eclipse gets its name from the fact the full eclipse will only be visible in the United States.

The path of the eclipse, which is racing from west to east coast, begins over the Pacific Ocean and ends over the Atlantic.

In anticipation of the event, Fulco has visited 28 states. Of the states experiencing total eclipse – Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina – he’s been to all but three.

The goal of his outreach has been to get as many school districts as possible on board with the idea of getting students outside for the eclipse.

“It only takes about 90 minutes for the moon’s shadow to travel the width of the country; at times it’s moving at speeds of more than 1,500 miles per hour,” said Fulco. “The eclipse gives kids the chance to experience something meant to be seen outside, instead of having to read about or see it on a computer screen. The last time the continental United States experienced a total solar eclipse was 1979.”

There have been some school districts around the country that have been hesitant about students viewing the eclipse says Fulco. Not in the Keys, however.

“The fact that schools here aren’t in the path of totality, but are so into it, has been cool,” he said.

Ocean Studies Charter School is one of the local school that has partnered with Fulco.

“We are excited to seize this teaching moment,” said Ocean Studies Charter School principal Abbie Freeman.

“Our science teacher, Martha Loizeaux, is working with our students to learn about the eclipse prior to the event.

The school has purchased safe viewing glasses and will view the eclipse on Monday. We look forward to providing opportunities for students to reflect and apply this new experience.”

Fulco has also been updating his

Facebook page, Totality 2017, and on the day of the eclipse, will be livestreaming a visual feed via NASA from a location in the path of totality from Carbondale, Illinois.

t’s been 99 years since the last total solar eclipse passed over the contiguous United States. And while the mechanics of the event are very similar, our ability to understand it had changed due to the advances in learning and technology. (And not since, 1979 has a total eclipse been visible from the mainland United States.)

“An eclipse teaches us so many things, but the 2017 eclipse is especially unique because of the uninterrupted land masses it will pass over,” said Lika Guhathakurta, an astrophysicist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in an article on NASA’s website. “This will allow us to maximize our chance to collect data and connect the shadow of the moon to Earth science.”

Guhathakurta described a variety of topics that NASA-funded eclipse projects may explore, including the varying luminosity of the sun and the relationship between surface temperatures and atmospheric changes.

The eclipe will cover a narrow corridor of 70 miles as it crosses 14 states.

Future total solar eclipses will cross the United States in April 2024 and August 2045.

‘THE LEAST OF THESE BROTHERS PASTOR’S WORK HAS OF MINE’ INTERNATIONAL IMPACT Island Community Church’s Pastor Tony Hammon opened the doors of Island Christian School in August 1974. Having recently explored his faith, the biology and marine science teacher departed Coral Shores High School to pursue the vision of opening a new Christian school.

Since then, Hammon’s impact hasn’t only been felt in the community – it’s reached other continents.

W

hat was your best subject growing up? Lunch and P.E. That is, until I had two teachers at Coral Shores who believed in me and challenged me to aspire to greater things (Roger Allen and Mark Gillett). The life-sciences always seemed to come easiest; thus, my teaching of biology and marine science.

Which subject required more prayer? Foreign language! (It didn’t help! … Prayer, that is.)

Which parable is your favorite? It’s like asking, “What is the most important thing Jesus had to say?” But, I guess I would say, based on my work in Uganda and now Haiti it would be Matthew 25:31-40. Specifically, where Jesus says, “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

Have any summer reading recommendations? “A Hole in Our Gospel,”

For some years now you’ve been a part of helping Ugandan children in some extraordinary circumstances.

What’s been the most eye-opening part of the process? The average income is about $85/ month. The government will educate two children in each family. The problem is that most families have six or more children.

If the orphanages and faith-based schools did not step in, there would be very little hope for these children. It is estimated that there are around 2.5 million orphans in Uganda. The task of educating and feeding these children lies primarily with churches and faithbased organizations.

Who has served as inspiration for undertaking a large effort like the one in Uganda? I was challenged at the Global Leadership Summit in 2011 to make a bold commitment to something, “a tough calling,” and trust God to do the rest. Just before that challenge at the Summit, I had been asked by Dr. Dino Pedrone, president of Davis College, to consider accepting the presidency of International Association of Christian Colleges and Schools. I felt pretty strongly that God’s hand was in the midst of it all.

How did you think up the idea of donating a milk cow as a way to help? The idea actually came from an orphan girl named Damallie, who was now grown and taking care of orphan babies that no one else would care for. When we asked her how we could help her, she responded with: “A cow.” We found that you can get a cow in Uganda for about 1,000 U.S. dollars. When I got back to the States I told Pete Reynolds, one of the men at a men’s breakfast that meets each week, about the conversation. He said, “I’ll buy a cow.” So, the next year we were able to present Damallie with her cow.

We have given away 30 cows to different orphanages and 5 calves have been born. This year our goal is to give away at least another 15 cows. The milk is cut 3:1 with water and each baby gets about ½ liter of milk per day. If my math is correct, that is 102 babies per day! That’s a big deal.

What is the main goal of the adjustable shoe initiative?

My good friend, and Ugandan traveling partner, Mike Forster, came across these amazing shoes and started his own campaign through a website. They are a very well made leather sandal that will expand into six different sizes. The shoes come in two sizes, so a child could be in sandals from early childhood to adulthood. It is very common for us to give flipflops to kids who have never had a shoe on their foot their entire life. These sandals that we are taking this year weigh exactly one pound. Fifty of them come in a virtually weightless nylon red bag. Each of the six-people traveling with us this year will carry one of these bags, so we can give away 300 pairs.

Hurricane Donna subject of seminar On Monday, Aug. 21, the Matecumbe Historical Trust is holding a special free seminar on Hurricane Donna. It begins at 6:30 p.m. at Island Community Church. The audio-visual presentation by Irving R. Eyster will focus on one of the worst hurricanes to hit the Florida Keys during the last century. Donna, which formed off the coast of Africa on Aug. 29, 1960 and hit the Middle Keys on Sept. 10, is the only hurricane of record to produce hurricane-force winds in Florida, the Mid-Atlantic states, and New England.

Athletes prepped and ready for swim games

T

he Area 11 Special Olympic Swim Games will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Founders Park. Organizers are expecting more than 150 swimmers from Monroe and Miami-Dade counties to compete for qualifying spots in the State Games in October. Led by Key West Conchs Coach, Kathy Gilmour, this year’s swimmers are expecting to dive headfirst into the competition.

The area swim games are being supported by local businesses like Jersey Boardwalk Pizza, All Keys Rentals, and Jimmy Sno. Volunteers are still needed for the event.

Those interested in volunteering can sign up by following links posted to the Special Olympics Florida Monroe County Facebook page.

Athletes from both counties competed in the area standup paddleboard games in July. It was the first time the museum had devoted an entire day to diving in vintage gear, and may not be the last according to the creative staff. The National Association of Underwater Instructors provided instruction and Vivid-Pix Land & Sea Scuba Pictures was onsite to make custom postcards. The event was also supported by volunteers and Coral Shores High School’s Teens4Oceans.

slamorada’s David Feder takes his signature blend of Flamencoinfused folk music — influenced by over three decades of island living — to the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Feder’s fans include Jimmy Buffett as well as author and Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen.

“I’m knocked out by the energy of his music,” Hiaasen said in a news release. “His touch with the Latin guitar is magic.”

Buffett recently introduced Feder, who performed with him at a recent show in the Keys, by noting, “You have a Florida treasure in your midst. Please welcome the great Dave Feder.”

Feder was hired as guitar coach to help the male lead of Buffett’s new musical, “Escape to Margaritaville,” improve his guitar playing skills for the part.

ike Bloody Marys, but not feeling in the vodka mood? Just the Thing, in Islamorada, has just the thing. The Bloody Beer substitutes the easy-drinking On Top blonde ale and has tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, A-1 sauce, Tabasco sauce, muddled lemon and lime, crushed black pepper, horseradish, celery stick, slice of house bacon, and comes with a skewer of blackened shrimp, olives, carrot ribbon, pickle, pickled jalapeno, onions, and pepperchini stuck in a ball of spicy cantaloupe.

Whew! The rim of the glass is dusted with salt and crushed red pepper. With so many ingredients, it’s like having the option of a full Bloody Mary bar included with every drink.

The global bistro has a unique concept going. The food and drink offered are not from the typical Keys menu and follow a more unorthodox approach. Bartender Marangelie Perez recommends trying everything at least once.

Perez is studying at FKCC to become a registered nurse and work in intensive care.

In her free time, Perez spends her days with her husband Rafael and her son.

Because Rafael is quite the impressive cook, they enjoy hosting get-togethers with lots of food and her specially made coconut sangria.
