The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is trying to decide whether to re-open the Goliath Grouper fishery. The largest of all groupers, they can grow up to 8 feet and 300 pounds, with no natural predators to regulate the population. Some claim the population is still vulnerable and has no food value since they potentially have a high mercury content. Others argue their population has definitely rebounded, they are a nuisance and eating all the good fish, like snapper, off the commercial fishing lines. The proposal is for 100 angler permits at $300 each (all proceeds go toward Goliath Grouper research) and the fish can only be caught hook and line. So we asked locals…

Should we reopen the Goliath Grouper fishery?

“No, they are too beautiful,” said Sandy Kimball. “We just can’t take everything out of the ocean.”

“No,” said Katchen Duncan. “People are already taking them and we should just leave them alone.”

“Yes, they’ve come back and it won’t affect the population,” said City Manager Jim Scholl.

“We can manage it with tags and maintain strict control over the numbers and it won’t be a problem.”

“Hell yeah,” said Cecil Witt. “They are getting out of control and you can tell because they aren’t even scared of humans any more.”

“It should just be for locals,” said The Duke.

“Because it would be hard to monitor and we would need to keep it under control.

Otherwise, without strict regulations, then I would say no.”

City provides drama and questions, but no solutions

W

ho would have thought going green could get so dirty? Yet this past Tuesday, the city Commission rejected the plan presented by Chris Hamilton, the town’s pedestrian coordinator, with a no vote of 5-1, sending his bike-share proposal back to the drawing board.

If that wasn’t deflating enough for the city’s bike czar, one commissioner went as far as to infer unethical partiality in the RFP process — indirectly indicting Hamilton for favoring one company over two others in the bidding process. In the end, Commissioner Sam Kaufman, the lone yes vote, apologized to Hamilton for Commissioner Margaret Romero’s accusation, stating, “I take exception. We are lucky to have Chris and to suggest he did something to alter the [RFP] results is insulting.”

Fireworks aside, for Hamilton, and the city, we are no closer to a bike share solution today than we were two years ago. And while there are many valid elements that need to be addressed before bike sharing is introduced in Key West (such as how out-of-town bike share companies might unfairly affect local bike rental businesses and whether the city should subsidize such companies) the city seemed most concerned over the revenue loss of 40 parking spaces, which is exactly what Hamilton and Zagster (the top ranked bike share company in the RFP) was asking the city to give up.

Going green sounds great. But when the cost is $320,000 in annual city revenues (the conservative gross for 40 city-owned parking spaces) one can bet that revenue and dollars (like it or not) tends to get in the way great, or should we say green, intentions.

BRITT MYERS traded in a life of monetary success, a chiseled body and intellectual enlightenment for a piece of the pie of the Keys Weekly newspapers. He is also the proud parent of an incredible fouryear-old and a sucker for Michael Mann movies and convenience store hot dogs.

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s drama, at least one of the businesses bidding for the city’s approval (and subsidies) have gone public in various media outlets, piggybacking on unsubstantiated accusations of collusion within the RFP process, while asserting they were misled by the city.

And one of those companies has allegedly stated they would conduct a bike-share business on city property with or without approval.

That said, I’m not suggesting the city missed the mark by denying the current bike share proposal. Moreover, I am no way agreeing with any accusations that Chris Hamilton, a respected professional, conducted himself without honor during the RFP process (unless his accusers have actual proof, which I doubt they do).

Instead, I am suggesting that forprofit companies, particularly those competing with local bike retailers and advertising firms, consider a creative business plan without the support of tax-supported subsidies. In this case, companies such as Zagster and Social Bicycles have a great opportunity to work with private local companies willing to partner as ridesharing destinations. Imagine the PR opportunities for 40 local businesses willing to provide space (and possible revenue sharing) for bike rental and drop-off locations throughout Key West. Imagine the increased traffic a business would attract as like-minded greenies come and go from its location.

When it comes to bike sharing there is a business plan, vested with privatized support, that can and will work. That’s something most everyone wants to see in Key West.

L

ike a smile, Dr. Seanica Howe cannot be considered ordinary, but delightful in every way.

And making people smile is her thing. Dr. Howe practices modern orthodontics without the pain and suffering of bygone methods and genuinely loves helping people get their beam back. “Orthodontics is an art, dealing with positive and negative space,” said Dr. Howe comparing it to her other passions such as painting, writing and even interior design. “I am very attached to the things I create.” Even her office decor feels more like a stylish home than a dated dentist’s office.

From a small town in Missouri, Dr. Howe’s parents instilled in her a practical nature, so she took her love of science and desire to live in Florida and received her orthodontics certificate at NOVA University in Ft. Lauderdale. She continued practicing orthodontics in Miami and back in Missouri, then followed her artistic spirit and received a master’s in modern and contemporary art at Christie’s, New York City. In 2013, she couldn’t say no to buying a practice in Key West – as she said, “The perfect place to work and be in a creative environment. This is it for me.”

Do you have a life credo or motto?

Making the world smile, one smile at a time. I do my best to bring positive change to the world.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything?

An orthodontist walked into my satellite practice in Missouri, which is in an extremely rural area, and made me an offer. Because of this I quit my other job in Miami mid-career and moved to New York – which was a huge dream of mine – and studied art.

Honestly, I still can’t believe it happened.

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket“ list, and one thing you did achieve?

To learn to play the guitar, to have a showing of my own art someday and publish a book.

Why orthodontics?

It allows me to act as an artist while still doing something professional and I am crazy about kids. They keep me young.

Why get an art degree as well?

I had never properly studied art and it was at a time where I needed the other side of myself to expand. Oddly, I also learned to be a writer in the program, and fell in love with that as well.

After, I felt whole because being an orthodontist is just one side of me.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego?

Nancy on “Weeds” — coolest, baddest chick and drinks a lot of coffee — my total addiction.

What is your nerdiest passion?

Honestly, I think being an orthodontist.

If invisible what would you do in Key West?

I’d run around naked and listen to people’s private conversations.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

Sitting in a corner of a great spot, listening to music all alone, with a glass of wine.

If you could grant Key West one wish?

Everyone here would do exactly what they wanted, all the time, with love in their hearts.

If not an orthodontist, what would be your dream job?

Rock star, and I would walk around with vampy nails acting like I was Rihanna wreaking havoc with zero filter.

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Stevie Nicks.

Speak up about wind insurance Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM), will testify at the Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (Citizens) rate hearing before the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) on Wednesday, Aug. 23, vigorously opposing any further increases in windstorm insurance rates by Citizens for Monroe County.

This is the eighth consecutive year that FIRM appeared and testified against further rate increases. In past years, no consumer organizations other than FIRM testified.

The rate hearing will be held at 4 p.m. at Florida International University Biscayne Bay Campus and can be seen live on the Florida Channel website at www.thefloridachannel.org. FIRM encourages interested citizens to attend and show support, and we are currently working on a coordinated effort to assist with that endeavor. FIRM will testify that Citizens has unfairly raised windstorm insurance rates for Monroe County so that they now are over 220 percent of the 2010 rates. This has resulted in Monroe County paying premiums totaling more than $700 million more than claims since 2004. FIRM will argue that the four state-approved windstorm rating models utilized by Citizens yield widely inconsistent results when applied to Monroe County. Equally troubling is the fact that despite a statutory mandate to provide affordable insurance, Citizens has consistently chosen the model that is least favorable to Monroe County.

FIRM is still awaiting the results of its legal proceedings against the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) concerning the 2017 rate increases.

FIRM alleges that OIR had wrongfully denied FIRM its lawful right to present its case before an Administrative Law Court. If FIRM is permitted to bring its case before an Administrative Law Court, FIRM will seek to show that the rate setting methodology utilized by Citizens and approved by OIR is flawed in many respects as it relates to Monroe County.

t’s been 99 years since the last total solar eclipse passed over the contiguous United States. And while the mechanics of the event are very similar, our ability to understand it had changed due to the advances in learning and technology. (And not since, 1979 has a total eclipse been visible from the mainland United States.)

“An eclipse teaches us so many things, but the 2017 eclipse is especially unique because of the uninterrupted land masses it will pass over,” said Lika Guhathakurta, an astrophysicist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in an article on NASA’s website. “This will allow us to maximize our chance to collect data and connect the shadow of the moon to Earth science.”

Guhathakurta described a variety of topics that NASA-funded eclipse projects may explore, including the varying luminosity of the sun and the relationship between surface temperatures and atmospheric changes.

The eclipe will cover a narrow corridor of 70 miles as it crosses 14 states.

Future total solar eclipses will cross the United States in April 2024 and August 2045.

ive years ago, science teacher Charles Fulco began preparing for the Great American Eclipse that will happen on Monday, Aug. 21.

The longtime teacher turned education consultant was looking for a way to combine his love of astronomy and educating teachers to get kids learning about science outside. So Fulco took his act on the road and gained the support of the American Astronomical Society and NASA. This year’s solar eclipse gets its name from the fact the full eclipse will only be visible in the United States.

The path of the eclipse, which is racing from west to east coast, begins over the Pacific Ocean and ends over the Atlantic.

In anticipation of the event, Fulco has visited 28 states. Of the states experiencing total eclipse – Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina – he’s been to all but three.

The goal of his outreach has been to get as many school districts as possible on board with the idea of getting students outside for the eclipse.

“It only takes about 90 minutes for the moon’s shadow to travel the width of the country; at times it’s moving

at speeds of more than 1,500 miles per hour,” said Fulco. “The eclipse gives kids the chance to experience something meant to be seen outside, instead of having to read about or see it on a computer screen. The last time the continental United States experienced a total solar eclipse was 1979.”

There have been some school districts around the country that have been hesitant about students viewing the eclipse says Fulco. Not in the Keys, however.

“The fact that schools here aren’t in the path of totality, but are so into it, has been cool,” he said.

Ocean Studies Charter School is one of the local school that has partnered with Fulco.

“We are excited to seize this teaching moment,” said Ocean Studies Charter School principal Abbie Freeman.

“Our science teacher, Martha Loizeaux, is working with our students to learn about the eclipse prior to the event.

The school has purchased safe viewing glasses and will view the eclipse on Monday. We look forward to providing opportunities for students to reflect and apply this new experience.”

Fulco has also been updating his Facebook page, Totality 2017, and on the day of the eclipse, will be livestreaming a visual feed via NASA from a location in the path of totality from Carbondale, Illinois.

hour and 18 minutes and 3 seconds is the new world record for a powerboat ride from Key West to Cuba, beating the last sanctioned record of 6 hours set in 1922 and unsanctioned 1 hour and 51 minutes set in 2015. On Thursday, the SilverHook, sponsored by Lucas Oil and driven by Jay Johnson and Captain/ throttle man Nigel Hook, left Mallory

Square going an average speed of 79.23 mph and battling 5- to 7-foot seas. The SilverHook is said to be the most technically advanced monohull boat in history and is equipped with the latest artificial intelligence produced by the DataSkill Company, also a sponsor and founded by Nigel Hook.

The boat is in the unlimited powerboat class, 48 feet long, with Mercury racing engines that produce 3,100 hp and can go a top speed of 168 mph

in perfect conditions. Ed Evans, chief operating officer with DataSkill said, “It’s about pushing your technology as a hard as you can without destroying it.” Also, Capt. Hook (yes, Capt. Hook) has been in international powerboat racing for 30 years, won three World Championships and set three World records – now four. Litigant continues to file new ADA lawsuits Local lawyers advise checking business websites SARA MATTHIS

ince Juan Carlos Gil filed suit against Hawks Cay Resort in July, he has filed 11 more lawsuits against other companies, including Ann Taylor Inc. Gil, a blind man, alleges that the companies’ websites don’t function with his reader software, preventing access to the entire site. This brings his total number of ADA-related lawsuits to nearly 100.

In June, he won a federal lawsuit against Winn-Dixie in which he asserted the Winn-Dixie website violated the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) because it was not fully accessible to the visually impaired. Federal Judge Robert Scola Jr. ordered Winn-Dixie to take remedial action to change its website to allow full access to visually impaired users. Gil’s lawyers look to

net more than $200,000 from WinnDixie for their trouble, according to Forbes Magazine, but Gil is not entitled to damages.

Scola wrote in his June 2017 order that “Winn-Dixie has presented no evidence to establish that it would be unduly burdensome to make its website accessible to visually impaired individuals.”

So far, Gil and his lawyers have targeted the websites of this top end resort in the Keys but other businesses have been named in similar lawsuits such as Billabong, See’s Candy, Bose, Ron Jon Surf Shop, Burger King, Nautica, Puma, Vera Bradley and Applebee’s.

In July, two more federal district court judges in New York issued rulings which mirror Scola’s decision in the Winn-Dixie case.

“For now this is an unsettled area of the law, but business owners should undertake to examine their own websites to determine if they allow access to blind and deaf consumers,” said John Campbell, of the Law Offices

of Campbell and Malafy. “The costs of such an expert examination and fix are very likely to be a fraction of the cost of an ADA lawsuit in federal court.”

The Florida legislature recently passed a statute aimed at providing businesses some relief from ADA lawsuits. The statute, which took effect on July 1, provides that “An owner of a place of public accommodation may file a certificate of conformity or remediation plan with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Such filing serves as notice to the public that the place of public accommodation is in compliance with Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act or that such place of public accommodation is making reasonable efforts to comply with such act.”

“What effect this new statute will have on ADA lawsuits in federal court remains to be seen,” said Campbell. “For now, the safest course of action would seem to be to contact your IT professional and see what if anything needs to be done to update your website.”

In 2016, the City of Marathon settled out of court with Eddie Sierra of Miami. As a deaf man who didn’t understand American Sign Language, he told city officials he did not have reasonable access to the recordings of city meetings.

“We settled without litigation,” said Marathon City Attorney David Migut, adding that the case pre-dates his employment with the city. “We provided him with some closed-captioned DVDs and paid $8,117.50.”

Migut said Sierra has filed similar suits in MiamiDade and Broward counties.

In 2015, Howard Cohan filed about 800 lawsuits, including against Keys resorts, claiming he was not afforded access to the resort facilities such as a pool lift. Two of the Keys properties prevailed as Cohan had never registered as a guest.

he Key West music scene offers opportunity to performers of all ages, including some local young musicians, who are taking advantage of that opportunity.

Shastina Chiles is a local rising star who is quickly becoming an integral part of Key West music.

Originally from Bermuda, her family moved here when she was 5. Singing came naturally to her, and it wasn’t long before she was playing guitar as well and performing as a solo artist.

After graduating from Key West Collegiate Academy in June 2016, Chiles made the leap and began earning a living making music full-time in Key West.

“I always wanted to do it. Now I feel like I have more freedom,” she said. “Since I’m doing it full-time it’s starting to feel a little smaller, so it’s making me think about traveling and playing on tour. Start with the U.S. first, play around the states, then maybe try a few spots out of the country. I’ve always listened to all kinds of genres so I just play everything. It’s great because I play for a lot of different age

Chiles has had the great opportunity to play alongside many talented musicians. She opened for Deana Carter at The Key West Theater, and, as a duo with Myles Mancuso, was the opening act for Jimmy Buffett’s 2015 live show in Key West. ”One of the things I’ve learned is that sometimes you don’t get a response from the audience when you perform, and it’s not because the music is not good.

It’s because they’re not ‘all there’ but still listening. And sometime people surprise you. You don’t think they’re interested but they turn around and give you a huge compliment or tip. It’s a great feeling! I play my own music but usually only when people request.

“A lot of people have helped me. Topher James and Drew Gunning have been very supportive with my music.

Where will I be in 5 years? I definitely see bigger stages!”

T

here isn’t a better island to be shipwrecked on than Key West, and at Two Friends Patio, Tracy makes up a drink by the same name. The Shipwreck consists of ruby red grapefruit vodka, ginger ale, and a splash of cranberry. “It’s very refreshing on a hot day,” she said.

Tracy couldn’t decide where to make her permanent home, but after her travel expenses started racking up from coming back and forth to Key West from Pennsylvania, she placed her roots on Key West.

“I was already home,” she said.

Although she says everything on the menu goes great with vodka, her favorites include anything with lobster, especially since lobster season just started. “I love our lobster combo and lobster and shrimp pasta,” she said.

At the only job she’s ever had since moving to Key West, she said between the wonderful owners, the staff and the musicians, there’s nowhere else on the island she’d rather be. “We get to meet people from all over the world here,” she said. “And, most of them return year after year.”

When she isn’t working, she likes to read, hang out with friends and spend as much time on the water as possible.

ore than 200 animals are in shelters in Monroe County and could use the help of locals who have a big heart and the commitment to take on a new best friend. The nationwide Clear the Shelters event takes place Saturday, Aug. 19 and Florida Keys SPCA’s Key West and Marathon campuses and Marrvelous Pet Rescue in Key Largo are participating.

The event waives all adoption fees, but the current procedures and policies still apply. In addition, all three rescues will be having fun “paw-ty’s” for animals and animal lovers.

The Marathon and Key West SPCA will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will have face painting, door prizes, Kiss a Pooch stand, food, and fun for the whole family.

A one-and-a-halfyear-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, needs some TLC from a loving family. Milo was surrendered because his owner was moving and finds comfort in other dogs, loves his toys, treats, and running in the Key West campus play yards. He is a great lounger on his soft bed, but also is ambitious when it comes to “dissecting” his toys.

“We are in the middle of hurricane season,” said Tiffany Burton from Florida Keys SPCA. “In the event of a major storm, we have to evacuate all of our animals. This event could help us put a large number of animals into homes which will tremendously help us.”

Marrvelous Pet Rescue will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will also be doing a $25 microchipping event and lifetime registration for pets. There will be a doggie day spa and nail clipping at the event, Puppy 101 classes, painting with Jessica Ann art, food and beverages, a rummage sale, and a doggy pool paw-ty.

“And, it’s our 10-year anniversary,” said Marrvelous’s Zana Khan.

Marrvelous is located at 5 Homestead Ave. at the Lions Club, Key Largo. Marathon SPCA campus is behind the airport and Key West SPCA campus is on Stock Island.

Key West’s Florida Keys SPCA has 115 animals available for adoption at its Stock Island home. Here are a couple cuties that could use a new home.

As of this month, Layla has been at the shelter for three years after she was surrendered because her owner passed away. She is an independent girl who loves naps, cozy beds and treats. The shelter hopes she can go into a home where she can get a bit more exercise to help her continue to lose weight and says she would do best in an adultonly home.

was left in an overnight pen at the Wildlife Center in November 2015, along with his brothers Riley, Ryan, Reed, Raphael, and Robbie. Eighteen months later, they are ALL still at the shelter waiting for homes.

Reed is a handsome, healthy and neutered rabbit who could make someone a wonderful houserabbit. He’s clean, quiet and calm.

Reed is one of 23 rabbits currently at the Key West Campus. On Saturday, they will be giving away FREE rabbit habitats with every rabbit adoption.

Key West bridge repair starts Sunday Monroe County’s repair project for the 177-foot Garrison Bight Bridge in Key West will begin Sunday, Aug. 20, at 9 p.m.

The work to replace the joints on the bridge deck and repave a portion of Palm Avenue will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., until the project is complete. The road work is expected to take about three weeks, but the contractor has until Sept. 30.

During the first phase, the westbound lanes on Palm Avenue will be closed from North Roosevelt Boulevard to Eisenhower Drive. Traffic will be able to travel along the eastbound lane of Palm Avenue.

When the westbound lane is complete, the eastbound lane will be shut down and traffic will be able to travel on the westbound lane during the night working hours.

The $1.5 million project includes repair work underneath the bridge, which originally was built in 1965. The project’s construction, engineering and inspection is primarily funded by a Florida Department of Transportation Small County Outreach Program grant.

Monroe County is providing matching funds of $565,000.

emember when “eating healthy” meant rice cakes, cottage cheese and grapefruit? Chef Laura Massey obliterates the bland from nutritious with organic, healthy food so good, it is actually hard to stop eating. Massey is all about health but even more so about flavor. So chuck the dry white fish and steamed veggies and grab one of the LoveGrubs’s Food Bowls filled with fresh meats, salmon and veggies, drizzled with homemade sauces and herbs savory enough to challenge any junk food lover.

Originally from California, Massey got a love of food — and a sense of creativity — from her father. With meager means, he was always able to make delicious, nutritious food seemingly out of nothing. he Key West Airport recently received the latest feather in its cap with the installation of a 4,000-pound steel/stainless steel sparrow entitled “Avis Gloriae Et Lavdis MMXVI” or “Bird of Glory and Praise.” A part of the Florida Keys Sculpture Trail, Sheila Berger’s statue has found a permanent nest near the airport tower, thanks to donations from John Padget and Jacob Gelt-Dekker working with the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the Monroe County Commission and Art in Public Places. Next to the Bird Of Glory is “Nature Eternal,” a matching steel tree sculpture.

onroe County’s Bernstein Park on Stock Island is looking a lot more like a grassy oasis after nearly 3 acres of sod recently was installed. The new grass is part of the county’s $7.7 million project to renovate the park, which was prone to flooding.

The park’s overhaul includes: multipurpose fields for baseball, softball, soccer and rugby; a playground; basketball court; walking/jogging trail and new field lighting. Future plans include installation of outdoor exercise equipment. The entire park is about 11 acres, of which 5 ½ acres is wetlands and environmentally protected. ey West Art & Historical Society’s Mission Control ArtCamp!, which ran Aug. 7-11, challenged campers to create an atmosphere, terrain and ecosystem of an exoplanet – a planet that orbits a star outside the solar system. This interstellar adventure propelled the students to a new world and helped them understand what is necessary for human habitation. Camp activities included exploring our galaxy, creating one’s own galaxy, growing space crystals and experiencing the power of rocket science by building and launching rubber band rockets. The camp is held every summer at Fort East Martello, featuring themed weeks with activities that include field trips to local museums, nearby beaches and gardens. Athletes prepped and ready for swim games

T

he Area 11 Special Olympic Swim Games will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Founders Park. Organizers are expecting more than 150 swimmers from Monroe and Miami-Dade counties to compete for qualifying spots in the State Games in October. Led by Key West Conchs Coach, Kathy Gilmour, this year’s swimmers are expecting to dive headfirst into the competition.

The area swim games are being supported by local businesses like Jersey Boardwalk Pizza, All Keys Rentals, and Jimmy Sno. Volunteers are still needed for the event.

Those interested in volunteering can sign up by following links posted to the Special Olympics Florida Monroe County Facebook page.

Athletes from both counties competed in the area standup paddleboard games in July. Matthew Dalton of the Upper Keys Manatees advanced to the State Games on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. Toll booth won’t close until Sept. 1 The closing date for Monroe County’s Card Sound Bridge toll booth is being delayed to Sept. 1. This change will allow Florida Power & Light time to relocate its power lines on the right of way prior to the start of construction of the all electronic tolling system.

Tolls will be collected and discount tickets will continue to be accepted until Sept. 1. After the toll booth closes, unused tickets may be returned for a refund.

During construction, which is scheduled to last 189 days, there will be no tolls. Some lane closures will take place. Those closures will be publicized when the schedule is known.

Community Foundation offers grant opportunity Community Foundation of the Florida Keys is now accepting proposals for projects serving audiences in Key West that promote and strengthen the Keys’ commitment to equality and human rights, at funding levels up to $5,000 total. he days of radio was a time when actors perfected their voices, sound engineers were artists and stories came alive in the imagination. The radio was the first step entertainment made to enter American homes, thrilling the masses. While production of a radio show may seem rudimentary compared to today’s Hollywood scale, it is no less entertaining.

The Studios of Key West is hosting WLRN/WKWM Public Radio in partnership with The Arts Radio Network Theatre Project to bring the one-of-akind experience of watching a live radio show. On Thursday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at The Studios of Key West, sit back, relax and marvel at local actors with just one sound engineer as they produce the classic Keys tale “Key Largo.” Made famous by Bogart and Bacall, the 1948 noir film follows World War II vet Frank McCloud when he encounters mobsters in a Key Largo hotel during a hurricane.

Who can forget Bogart’s classic line as McCloud, “ You don’t like it, do you Rocco, the storm?

Show it your gun, why don’t you? If it doesn’t stop, shoot it.”

This will be WLRN’s third radio production in Key West, having previously done “The African Queen” and “The Birds.”

“It’s so important we have a live audience,” said Caroline Breder-Watts of The Arts Radio Network Theatre Project. “They get to participate with boos and cheers and help with the overall effect.” The show is 100 percent live and the sound engineer, Zachary James Myers, will create the effects accompanying the actors. “We feel it is important nothing is pre-recorded. All sounds will be made from devices or vocally across the stage from the actors.” The cast includes Susannah Wells, Ross Pipkin, Don Bearden, Wayne Dapser, and Caroline Breder-Watts.

“It’s a lot more fun than you think,” said Nancy Klingener, local Keys reporter with WLRN. “It’s really a play and you get to participate a lot, so it’s pretty cool. Plus, it’s live on the radio.”

The broadcast will be live on 91.3 WLRN and 91.5 WKWM in the Florida Keys or go and experience the show live at the theater. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a pre-show reception before the audience is seated at 6:40 p.m. Tickets are available at tskw.org or at The Studios of Key West box office.

And for radio buffs, The Studios is offering a free radio sound effects workshop with WLRN on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. Members of the production will be showing the ins and outs of creating sound effects, giving the audience a glimpse at the technical side.

This workshop is for children and adults.

One more bonus: since WLRN has its own Southernmost bureau at the Studios (third floor), there will be an open house at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. to meet reporter Nancy Klingener and WLRN News Director Terence Shepherd, who want to hear your stories over donuts and coffee.

The WLRN seventh annual Florida Keys Museum and Attractions Weekend is hosted by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

Key West artists are taking their creative productions to the walls and stage, going against one another to take “Best in Show” for four nights at the Key West Theater. The trophy?

Bragging rights as the best and brightest in fine arts and performance arts in Key West. More than 30 artists applied, with original artwork inspired by the theme “Island Time” (none was denied) in order to be a part of the first annual, all arts extravaganza competition.

Imagine the Theater becoming the ultimate wonder emporium of the arts, and best of all, it’s not just the entertainment value, but the crowd gets to pick the winner.

The Smackdown was the idea of Juliet Gray, artistic and performing arts director with the theater, who wanted to take advantage of Key West artists’ summer downtime. “Artists have a little more free time to participate in something truly for local artists by local artists,” said Gray. “All the fine art will be displayed throughout the theater and each night will be a variety show of performances.” From high-schoolers to the professionals, artists of all ages reacted positively and were game for a little competition.

“To think outside the box, you must live outside the box,” said Charvet, ready to bring it.

“We wanted a theme broad enough to inspire artists to create original work but also relate to Key West in general,” said Gray. During the four days, it will be the audience who determines the winners in two categories — fine arts and performance — every night. There is anything from oil paintings to mosaics to fiber art and a bedlam of performances from bands and comedy routines to short films and plays. Also, all visual art will be for sale with artists keeping 100 percent of profits. Doors open at 7 p.m. and performances will begin at 8 p.m., and any material deemed inappropriate for

younger ages will be given fair warning and shown at the end of the evening.

In the visual arts, look for paintings by Rhonda Bristol, Fran Decker, Deborah Kik, and Gail Miller; mixed media by Kristen Norman and Christine Stites; sculptures by Tim Curtis and Stuart Damon; mosaics by Kassandra Burnette and Kim Kassner; and fiber art by Margo Ellis, just to name a few. And in the performing arts, there is an adaptation of Aesop’s fables into
