Two words: iguana wrangler. No, seriously, wanna be one? Because now the government will pay you to do it but here’s the catch: the job description is a little bit extensive. So for a mere $18 an hour (up to $22 depending on experience) you must have bachelor’s degree, preferably a master’s; work 40 hours a week, be available nights and weekends; you can use “hand capture, noosing, trapping, air rifles and other firearms;” and you must have excellent customer service skills.

They would also like public speaking, computer skills and the ability to identify native and non-native wildlife. Awful lot to ask for $18 an hour. Granted, there is health insurance, so we asked locals…

ISLANDIA In 1964 there was talk of a toll road to be constructed from mainland Florida to the Keys. This one would have stretched from Key Biscayne to where Ocean Reef is now, and stretch across Elliott Key as its main land mass. (The biggest open water span, between Key Biscayne and Elliott Key, would have required a 10mile bridge!) The proposed development would have been called “Islandia.” The plan was bandied about for a couple of years with many arguments about whether Monroe County or Dade County would receive the lion’s share of the toll funds before it finally died.

OVERSEAS TOLL 1938-1954 What’s old is new again

Monroe County, the City of Marathon and the Village of Islamorada have signed off on a resolution to explore the idea of a toll on Overseas Highway. It wouldn’t be the first time. From 1938 to 1954, Overseas Highway was officially called the “Overseas Road and Toll District.”

T

he most complete account of the toll history in the Keys is Jerry Wilkinson’s account: “History of the Overseas Highway,” at www.keyshistory.org. Many of the existing records in the Key West library are fragile sheets of onionskin crowded with typewritten accounting spreadsheets. The Overseas Road and Toll District was first and foremost a boon to the Keys’ tourist industry.

Later, it would become a source of scandal when the now-defunct Miami News’ investigative reporting revealed financial discrepancies in the 1950s.

The idea for a toll emerged in 1932, when the island residents longed for more reliable means than the ferry service connecting the islands, especially Key West, and wanted actual roads and bridges throughout the entire island chain.

“Monroe County’s population was mostly in Key West; therefore, for the county to survive, either the railroad or the highway had to exist,” Wilkinson writes.

The roads of Monroe had already been under construction for decades and the costs continued to mount. (All the way back in 1917, Monroe County floated the first $100,000 bond to build roads, or trails, on Key Largo, Big Pine Key and a bridge from Key West to Stock Island.) The county was already indebted and so the Overseas Highway Bridge Corporation was formed, with a plan to borrow $10.7 million over 19 years. The loan request went all the way to Washington, D.C. but wasn’t approved for some years until the federal Public Works Administration authorized $3.5 million, the balance of the construction costs to be funded with a bond repaid by the road tolls.

“The ‘new’ highway actually had two grand openings in 1938,” said Key West historian Tom Hambright. “The first was in March and the second was in July.” The formal July grand opening was accompanied by a gala weekend, advertised with two-color brochures that featured an Overseas bridge, and a mariachi band on the cover. “And then, there was a third grand opening in 1944 after the U.S. military improved the highway to strengthen the country’s position from Key West during WWII,” Hambright said.

Tolls were a whopping $1 per car — $17.37 in today’s dollars, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — and 25 cents ($4.34 today) for any extra passenger. “The Florida Keys Weekly News of November 1947 listed 15,254 vehicles with tolls of $29,275.25.” Found in the archives of the Key West library, a sheaf of records details tolls in 1948 and one trend still holds true today: February is still the most popular month in the Keys. It details 42,421 “autos,” 4,536 “vehicles” and 90,338 “passengers” passing through and paying revenues of $77,210. The toll booths were located on Big Pine Key and Lower Matecumbe Key. It’s believed that one was to collect northbound tolls and the other the southbound tolls.

The collection of fees was smooth for 15 years. But, in 1953, locals were allowed free passage after some allegations of toll money “misuse,” according to Wilkinson.

According to Hambright, it was alleged the toll funds were being diverted to pay for wild parties on Pigeon Key, the highway’s halfway mark and the headquarters for the Toll and Bridge Commission.

“The radio star Arthur Godfrey would broadcast from Pigeon Key,” said Hambright. “It was rumored that the funds went to buy filet mignon and alcohol for the parties.”

The case was investigated by none less than the governor himself. Charley Eugene Johns, a state senator, became the acting governor upon the death of Gov. Dan McCarthy. According to Hambright, the state handed down an indictment but it’s unclear what happened next, other than the end of toll collection. It was completely suspended in April 1954 and the highway name was shortened to “The Overseas Highway.”

The toll idea has resurfaced numerous times since. The first time was just a year later. According to Wilkinson as reported in the Miami News, another toll road from Miami to Key West was proposed, a “super-highway,” with an interesting graduated configuration — six lanes to Key Largo, four lanes to Marathon, and two lanes to Key West.

More recently, it came up in 1990 at the suggestion of the state Department of Natural Resources. It proposed visitor fees of $1 for tourists who fly into the Keys and 50 cents for drivers. It was unanimously struck down by Gov. Bob Martinez’s cabinet, although its lofty goal was to preserve the Keys unique environment.

Currently, there is a thriving debate on what toll revenues can fund. Some say collections can only go to pay for infrastructure, i.e. more roads. Others cite precedents such as Alligator Alley. Toll revenues that exceed road maintenance and construction for Alligator Alley are being diverted to the South Florida Water Management District’s fund for Everglades reconstruction.

erlyn Matthews gives great hugs, and she is a hug, if a hug were a person. Matthews came to Key West via all over the world, from her roots in Texas, to her husband’s Marine stations around the states and even Stuttgart, Germany. Landing in Key West in 2008, she was a full-time mother of three and started as a “floater” at Sunbeam with a Sunday School background. Now, Matthews has achieved Sunbeam Teacher of the Year and obtained Florida child care credentials, national childcare credentials and director credentials. Finishing off her first year as director, Matthews truly loves the children. She understands not everyone was born to be a teacher, but she has a natural gift and passion for it.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? I would say Captain America, because he keeps the team together and that’s what I strive to do daily at our school.

What is your nerdiest passion? My adult coloring book.

Number one advice to parents with young kids? Love them and spend time with them daily, just talking, reading and having fun with them. They truly grow up so fast.

Best moment teaching a child? When you have that student that you know is so proud of their work and they are struggling but you keep working with them and one day they get it and understand and then just soar. What a great feeling to see children succeed in learning.

JOAL RUSH WORKING ON ‘KALEIDOSCOPE’

inger / songwriter Joal Rush has been living and performing in Key West for more than 15 years. He is in the midst of completing his newest recordings, soon to be released, titled “Kaleidescope.” A widely respected musician, Joal opened in May for Big Head Todd at the Key West Theater. He also performed, for the fifth time, at this year’s Key West Songwriter festival. “The festival is an amazing thing,” he said. “This year ‘The Art of Sound’ and the role they played as sound technicians was a big part of the performances and contributed

to the sound. Every year the festival continues to progress and get better.”

Born and bred in South Carolina, Joal now splits his time between Nashville and Key West, investing more time in songwriting. He views songwriting as a discipline: “As a working musician you have to make the time to write … it’s a combination of working it like a job and combining it with inspiration.

Hopefully the two find a perfect marriage.”

Like most musicians, Joal doesn’t make his money off recordings sales, but rather working as an everyday performer. It has taken a year to record the 12 songs, and the plan is to release the recordings as three separate volumes, titled “Kalaidescope Emotions.”

“I’m going to use this recording to get back on tour, with a booking agent and go national, tour across the U.S.,” he said.

While we talked, Joal played some of the recordings for me, and after listening to the new recordings, the title seems very fitting.

With a wide range of styles and influences, his newest music can be described as soulful Americana. Joal describes his musical influences as Ryan Adams, Jackson Browne, and Tom Petty. His recording “Moonshine,” has hints of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” while “Sweeter by the Day” is a bit more funky with a very cool sound reminding me of Lyle Lovett.

Some of his new songs come from working as a duo with long time friend and collaborator Andy Luadzers. “‘Darlin’ Stay’ was written after an emotional breakup with a girlfriend. It was how I coped … I channeled my emotion in to the music,” Joal said.

verlooking the marina, The Perry Hotel offers two beautiful locales to sip on drinks and order good food. “I love that it’s new,” said bartender Heidi. “The hotel is beautiful; there is nothing else like it in Key West.”

Heidi said that along with the view, the restaurants Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen and the Salty Oyster, are both great.

Her go-to cocktail of choice to serve up is the Banana Bread Old Fashion from Matt’s specialty cocktail menu. Made with Bulleit rye whiskey, French pear brandy, banana liqueur and black walnut bitters, she said the drink is perfect for after dinner. It is garnished with a few dry banana chips.

At The Salty Oyster, she specializes in frozen drinks and cold beer.

Without a doubt, she said, her favorite thing on the menu is the crab beignet. “I think everyone on our staff would probably say that,” she said.

Heidi lives in Ramrod Key and moved to the Keys in 2009 with a short stint in Tampa since. She is in the process of buying a Ramrod Key house, and crosses her fingers the process goes well.

BOOKING AGENT CITY LOOKING AT VENUE MANAGEMENT FOR AMPHITHEATER concert at Pier Six in Maryland

A few weeks ago, the Keys Weekly broke the news that Jimmy Buffett and his booking agency were in talks to solidify a spring/summer concert at the Key West amphitheater. Not only did the news of a major Key West concert set off a firestorm of excitement among parrot heads — it also revealed a pressing need for a management company to run and operate the 3,500-seat facility.

s of today, the (yet to be named) Truman Waterfront Amphitheater has already accepted applications for shows and concerts, recently inking a contract for an upcoming country music festival. And while the initial process had many gray areas for commissioners to preside over at the last commission meeting, the long-term goal is to partner with a management company that handles everything from trash and parking to booking and ticket sales.

“Anyone can apply, as long as they have the insurance and money to hold an event there,” said Alison Higgins, sustainability coordinator for the City of Key West. “And the hiring of a venue management team and the RFP will be going for commission approval within a month.”

Although the city has operating guidelines for an amphitheater (a lengthy 18-page report filled with recommendations on everything from booking acts to managing traffic and sound), the executive summary of the Waterfront Amphitheater Report states, “Many well-intentioned amphitheaters failed for lack of active management.” However, if cities are best served by staying out of the concert and event business, then just who should be in charge and what should the contract entail?

Bill Muehlhauser and his company, Rams Head Group, have been an independent concert promoter for 20 plus years, having managed the famed Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore from 2006-2016. Muehlhauser has lived fulltime in Key West for the past decade and the Rams Head Group has been behind the recent mainstream music movement at the Key West Theater — booking such acts as the Gin Blossoms, Lee Ann Womack, Big Head Todd, Edwin McCain, and Dave Mason.

“People warned me no one would pay for a ticket to see music in Key West, and I was almost convinced,” said Muehlhauser. But sold out shows, out-of-town ticket holders and a growing resume of national acts have proven Muehlhauser’s naysayers wrong.

In fact, many argued the Key West Theater proved to be an accurate stepping stone for a larger venue during the debates surrounding the approval for the Key West amphitheater.

Rams Head Group has keen interest in managing the new theater, given its experience running both bar venues and “boutique” amphitheaters. The Baltimore amphitheater seats 4,300 and Key West will be 3,500, meaning the types of acts, community events, food and beverage sales, ticketing, parking and other management elements are extremely familiar to Muehlhauser and his company.

“You have to remember, no matter who is awarded the management contract for the amphitheater, they will still have to use an agency to book mainstream acts,” said Muehlhauser.

“We have 30 years of experience running bars, all with live music, and large concert venues, which means we cut out the middle man. We are the booking agency and I can tell you that not just anyone can just pick up the phone and get through to the larger names in music. They will likely be using us or a company like us, and I would rather keep it local,” he said, smiling.

Muehlhauser, who is typically reserved, said that while he respects many of the people who will likely be bidding for the potential RFP, he also fears an inexperienced person or group could pigeon hole one type of entertainment or cut off opportunities that a seasoned agency like his brings to the table.

“What I really want is a flexible space for the community,” said Muehlhauser. “And there is so much more to the amphitheater than just concerts.

It’s a wonderful venue for dozens of community events throughout the year, which all deserve professional attention.”

In addition, Muehlasuer stressed the need for the city to examine all facets of a managing partner, noting that even the type of entertainer and bands can often dictate the type of visitor and patron the community will be attracting.

“There is so much more to consider when booking [acts],” he said. “For a city like Key West, you not only want a considerate music goer, you also want them booking rooms, spending money in our restaurants and contributing to our local economy.”

In the last two years, Rams Head Group has booked acts such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Gregg Allman, Santana, John Fogerty and Third Eye Blind at Pier Six. With each act, Muehlhauser said, a great deal of strategic planning goes into the marketing, production and community impact — all with a specific target market in mind, something he hopes to continue in his hometown of Key West.

“We gotta put our toe in the water and see how people respond, which will definitely regulate how we move forward,” said Muehlhauser, who is well aware of the community issues facing the potential effects of large concerts.

Either way, the largest hurdle has been cleared for the amphitheater, which is just a few months shy of completion. From there, commissioners will seemingly decide on a managing partner, which will certainly play a large role in the immediate success of the southernmost amphitheater in the United States. (Hey, that sounds like a great stage name!)

Open Venue Model: In the open venue model, the venue operator does not take the risk of the success of a concert or event, but will be paid a fee for the rights to use the venue. The promoter will be responsible for managing and paying for the talent, advertising and promoting the event, stagehands, load-in and -out and paying for the security and ushers. Venue operator can still be associated with a single promotion company, but could not limit other promoters from hosting events.

LIFE IN MINIATURE Artist recreates Williams’ home

Artist Jane Rohrschneider holds a tiny model English bulldog, one of two faux canines that inhabit an elaborate model of Tennessee Williams’ Duncan Street house, crafted by Rohrschneider and installed on Aug. 8 at the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit, 513 Truman. The artist said the model, which is 1/24 scale, took eight months to craft and represents how the home of the great American playwright looked in the 1950s. Since features of the property have changed over the years, Rohrschneider used old photos to keep it as true as possible to the period and even reproduced an authentic stained glass window in the home, using her kiln to create a fused glass replica. The fully furnished model, commissioned by Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit curator Dennis Beaver, Bert Whitt and the Exhibit’s board of directors, and funded by The Helmerich Trust, Barbara and Evan Corns and the members of the Exhibit, is now on permanent display. he Collegiate Academy located at the Florida Keys Community College is hitting its stride with the new principal Tom Rompella. Rompella has been with the academy since its humble beginnings six years ago as a technology teacher and is confident taking the baton from former head Cory Oliver. Oliver, who left Key West for another sister school, helped Rompella prepare and it has been an easy crossover from teacher to administrator. Now that the academy has seen its first two classes of freshmen graduate, the school feels more solid and eager to go further with its insightful educational vision.

What makes the academy a different choice for Key West high schoolers is the philosophy.

“This is really just another option for high school. We are smaller and more family-like,” said Rompella.

Students have a more personalized academic regime because they study under the same teachers for all four years and enjoy smaller classes. The

atmosphere creates a close relationship with learning and fosters a stronger sense of responsibility for students about their own future.

“We have three different goals,” said Rompella. “We want to create college pathways or college readiness, really help kids get a jump on the college experience (kids can take college accredited courses). We focus on skill development for industries so kids understand what is expected of them in the workplace. And lastly, character development: we expose them to adult realities when it comes to being responsible for their education.”

Rompella describes the academy as a safe learning environment where kids enjoy coming to school. He grew up enjoying school outside of Chicago, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as several teaching certificates. Rompella, named Teacher of the Year three times running at the academy, said, “I love watching people experience learning. There is a paradigm shift and when it happens, it’s amazing to watch.”

Although school starts next week, Rompella’s first goal is to attract 25 more students, to reach the school’s desired enrollment of 100 by October.

The Collegiate Academy is a free public charter high school and isn’t limited to one type of student. The academy focuses on helping Key West students achieve their potential no matter what type of learner they are and push for success, whether graduating with early college credits or just mastering high school.

“I have seen kids who never thought they would graduate,” said Rompella. “It’s really something to watch every student transform.”

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A FOSTER PARENT?

Wesley House hopes to certify 15 to 20 parents

arlier this month, representatives from Wesley House held the first of six classes to train – and pick – new foster families in Monroe County. It’s a departure from the process in the past few years, in which interested families had to travel to the mainland to go through the process.

“It was hard for that mainland agency to qualify foster families; they didn’t understand the Keys as well,” said Wesley House Executive Director Beth Barrett. “Now that they have given that function back to us, we can have boots on the ground to recruit and do different pre-services.”

The need for new foster families never goes away, for happy and sad reasons. Happy: some foster families end up falling in love with a child and making a formal adoption. Sad: there will always be children in need of a safe house. Currently, there are 42 children in foster care from Monroe County. In the past three years, there have been 47 adoptions.

“The turnover for Wesley House’s foster families is usually a positive story — families fall in love and adopt,” Barrett said. “But the overall goal of fostering is to have the biological parents get what they need from the system so they can take their children back and reunite the family.”

The Weekly asked some experienced foster families what the experience is like. The most simple and direct answer is — it’s different with every child who comes into the home.

“Listen, raising kids is difficult whether they are your own, or someone else’s,” said Lori Thompson, who has fostered almost two dozen children since 2008. “But when you get that phone call … someone needs you. And when that door opens, and you see those little faces, all the worries of the day seem to fade away. It’s like a switch turns on. And it’s a good feeling to provide a safe place for a child.”

She said it’s important for foster parents to know the child’s back story and adapt to the situation. Maybe the kids didn’t get enough to eat. Or maybe they were left alone at night and need an adult sitting by the bedside for an hour, or an hour and a half, until the little one finally drifts off to sleep.

The foster family training process spans six to eight weeks. In those days, families will attend workshops, invite Wesley House staff into their homes, pass background checks, and provide all necessary employment, medical and insurance clearances.

According to Barrett, almost all of the children in the foster system in Monroe County stay in the islands. In some cases, children must be sent to Miami-Dade and that is not a beneficial circumstance, as it presents obstacles to reuniting families. Usually, she said, such instances involve teenagers who need more services than the Keys can provide.

“Reunification is more likely to happen if they can see their child on a regular basis and it motivates them to obtain the skills so they can care for their child in a safe way,” she said.

FOSTER MYTH BUSTING MYTH: I could never be a foster parent because I’m not married and don’t make a lot of money. I don’t even own my own home.

FACT: There are no such requirements. You can be married or single, a homeowner or a renter. The only financial requirement is that you have enough income to support yourself and your family aside from the money you are reimbursed to care for a child living in foster care.

“Everybody comes with a story. We all have our baggage, even at five and six years old,” she said. “You need to know those stories.”

Owen and Richard Trepanier have fostered six children in their Keys home, and adopted three of them. They are cognizant that the child’s welfare is the first and foremost concern, and recognize that the biological parents are likely to be stressed to the limit to have a child removed from their custody. Both factors require emotional balance and perspective on behalf of the foster parents.

They said the longer the child stays in foster care, the more likely the relationship between biological and foster parents will blossom.

“We fostered the sweetest baby girl who was only three weeks old until the parents sorted themselves out,” said Richard Trepanier. “I have a memory of Owen cradling the baby at his desk while he typed.

She was a wonderful, sweet little girl with beautiful eyes. We were happy when she was reunited with her parents.”

he Little White House offered a unique opportunity for people to get avocados off of one of the trees at the Little White House. “It was a fun little fundraiser as well,” she said.

Key West residents Paul and Leslie Skinner were at the Tropical Fruit Fair in July and saw the opportunity to buy avocado futures. “The man selling them told us that Harry was real fond of these avocados,” said Paul. “So we bought a future, which meant we could come and pick them when they were ready.”

Being big avocado fans, especially of the big smooth-skinned ones on the tree, Paul and Leslie were excited to get an email saying the avocados were ready for harvest. They rode their bikes to Little White House and picked four. “Two more fell off while we were picking the fourth, so we ended up with six,” he said.

“Our lucky day.”

The two extras they brought to Michigan to share with their son and son-in-law, while visiting their 13-day-old granddaughter this week.

And, they are looking forward to making avocado toast on Cuban bread when they return.

Little White House still has a few shareholder orders to fulfill; however, the public can swing by the gift shop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily or call to schedule an appointment at 305-2949911. There is a full-time gardener on-site who can assist in the picking experience.

“We have another tree that will be ready to harvest next month,” said Garrido. “Our mission is to preserve the Little White House, famous and historic trees included, and we are thrilled that the public has enjoyed our avocado experience.”

HOW OLD ARE THE TREES ON PROPERTY? The Little White House is working to find the exact answer to that question. “We are in search of photos that date back to include the trees, as well as an open project, which includes analyzing the DNA of the seeds,” said Little White House’s Jeanna Garrido. “The University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center under the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is helping us with this project. Our goal is to find the exact variety of avocado and age of the tree.”

Originally Navy property that dates back to 1890, the historic site Little White House has been visited by seven U.S. presidents and served as the “Winter White House” for President Harry S. Truman Some natives share the legend that the avocado trees on the Little White House property are most likely of Cuban origin, created as victory gardens and groves during the Spanish-American war. Just think: cigar workers, maritime ship builders and many notable Key West visitors surely enjoyed fruit from the same trees. Willard Wells, the gardener hired by the Navy around 1915, was credited for the layout of the botanical gardens seen today on the property. Other notable trees on the property include 20th century gems like a Sappa Dillas, mangoes, Spanish almonds, dates, and coconut palms. It is also home of Monroe County’s oldest soapberry tree, which many tropical countries use to produce a soap-like material from the berries.

Growing the sport, from a hospital bed

R

ural locations are a challenge for organizing league tennis, and perhaps no Florida location is more challenging than the expansive Florida Keys.

If that’s the case, then no league organizer has been more challenged than Nicole Berger — especially earlier this year, organizing tennis leagues from a hospital bed some 1,700 miles from her home on Big Coppitt.

Berger in February found herself in a hospital bed in Iowa rather than driving the idyllic 10-mile commute to her Paradise Tennis Academy in Key West.

“I moved to Iowa when I found out I was pregnant in September, to avoid Zika,” said Berger of the virus reported in areas of South Florida. “My husband and I run Paradise Tennis in Key West together. He stayed in Key West to run all the clinics, lessons, leagues and tournaments, while I did all the computer work for the business — marketing, sales, e-mails, accounting and billing. In February I starting having some pregnancy complications and ended up spending 46 nights in the hospital in Iowa. I was able to run Paradise Tennis,

start new leagues, and manage my property management business from my hospital bed. It was challenging at times and awkward when I was on a work conference call and the doctor would walk in.”

Following the birth of their second child, Berger returned to Florida, continuing to organize tennis across the Lower Keys and adding USTA Junior Team Tennis to her menu of options for local players.

“Nicole is one of the most dedicated pros I have had the pleasure to work with,” said Cathy Nordlund, USTA Florida tennis program coordinator for the Miami area. “She seems to have a special passion to introduce tennis to the kids.

Living and working in the Keys presents some special challenges with the distance you have to drive all the time to get to other tennis facilities for match play. She was in and out of the hospital but never stopped working on it.”

Berger in 2015 and her husband Brock Wilson in 2017 were named the USPTA Pro of the Year for the Keys for running successful USTA leagues, providing numerous junior play opportunities, and for hosting various charity tournaments among other endeavors.

This year Berger has volunteered to support the Keys tennis community by mentoring young USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) teaching pros in the USPTA U30 program, and organizing a first-time Middle School Team Tennis League for a 2017 debut.

“This fall is shaping up to be a busy one,” she says. Between adult leagues, junior team tennis (local and travel league), middle school league and junior tournaments, there is no lack of play this summer and fall in the Keys.

USTA Florida named Berger as the July 2017 Florida Tennis Volunteer of the Month.

“The challenges are the lack of courts, and lack of large facilities to run big events, and the distance between clubs,” she says of the Florida Keys.

“The reward is living in paradise.”

“P

aradise” is a word with a big meaning and the apt title to the new short film created by a talented group of Key West high school students. The film debuted on Aug. 6 to a packed Tropic Cinema and these young filmmakers should be immensely proud of their accomplishment. From storyboard to camera to editing, “Paradise” is their first work of professional art and embodies all the subtle and big meanings of what it truly means to live and work in paradise.

by Anna Mott and Divya Navani, expanded it with more scenes and intricate shots, and used professional technology and cameras to create this 19-minute gem. The plot veers from their millennial stereotype and is about a young man rejecting modern life. Down on his luck, character Bronza Fox (played by Bronza Fox) heads out on the water to escape his bad day, only to have it get worse. His boat drifts away and he is stranded on a deserted island for

two years (Boca Grande was the location). Fox then discovers he likes being a castaway and refuses to be rescued.

Living on fish and coconuts, he stands his ground with his motto “Can’t kick me off this island.”

For Fox, it was about rediscovering his own home, Key West, and its surrounding nature and appreciating it.

“Nowadays, technology, phones, computers rule — we never get to experience that sense of alone in nature.” In essence, the film becomes a love letter to the Keys and all its beauty out on the water. And who else could have created such a tribute but Keys kids who have always called it home.

This is reiterated by the cinematography of the movie that stole the show, thanks the natural talent of young Director of Photography Krzysztof Madro. Sweeping panoramic views, startling shots of spearfishing and action shots show that making the film itself was paradise for these kids as well. Using a professional movie-grade RED camera, aerial drones, and Go Pro camera, there was an unabashed level of enthusiasm for filmmaking showing that paradise isn’t just a place but a mindset. “‘Paradise’ is about not taking the Keys for granted,” said TJ Nitti, who will attend NYU Tisch School of the Arts next fall for film, but also about not taking the opportunities life affords for granted either. Each of these these young filmmakers has helped show in more than ways than one, what is paradise.

“Paradise” has been selected to be screened at All American High School Film Festival and will be played in AMC Theater in Times Square, New York City. “Paradise” is also eligible for many nominations at the Teen Indie Awards as part of being accepted in All American High School Film Festival.

or 24 years, Schooner Wharf Bar has been the stage for one of the greatest battles in KW history, Battle of the Bars.

Local waiters, waitresses, owners and bartenders come to show off their serving skills and best everyone at the number one sport in town, drinking, all in the name of charity.

This year’s event raised $19,182, to benefit the Boys and Girls Club and the Bahama Village Music Program, and over the years, the Battles and Wharf owner Evalena Worthington have helped raise $338,934 for community programs. Mayor Craig Cates said “It all starts with servers,” crediting them for keeping Key West a number one destination. Jim Scholl, city manager, echoed our Key West philosophy, “It’s about locals helping locals.”

KEEP THE KIDDOS SAFE BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME PUTS FOCUS ON SAFETY Almost 9,000 students will be returning to schools in the Keys next Wednesday, Aug. 16. Amid the adjustments of the community’s schedule, it is important to remember the number one back-to-school priority: keeping kids safe.

A

t the start of a new school year, patience is the most important thing that every motorist can bring to the table. It’s worth allowing a little more time to get around to be sure that all Key West kids are safe on their way to and from school.

Here are some child safety tips to keep in mind: • If your child is walking to or from school, walk the route together beforehand. Choose the most direct way, and be sure the route has sufficient sidewalks, lighting and crossing guards. If a crossing guard is absent, be sure your child knows when it is safe to cross the street.

• Make sure your child walks to and from school with other trusted schoolmates and follows the tried and true axiom, “Never talk to strangers.”

• When waiting for the school bus, always stand on the sidewalk, away from the road. Always remain seated while on the bus.

• Be sure your child knows a phone number where you can be reached in case of an emergency.

Being hit by a car poses the greatest threat to any child walking or riding a bicycle to school. As drivers, it is our responsibility to avoid dangerous distractions behind the wheel. Pay particular attention near crosswalks and areas around schools where children could potentially run into the roadway. Don’t text or talk on the phone; it’s not worth the risk of a potential tragedy.

This is a good time to take a look at your own driving habits and review the rules of the road.

Florida law prohibits passing a school bus in either direction when it is stopped with red lights flashing. Drivers must also remember to slow down to the posted speed limit in school zones. Anyone caught passing a stopped school bus or speeding in a school zone can expect to be stopped and cited accordingly.
