UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / AUGUST 4, 2017 If it isn’t apparent by now, the sun in the Florida Keys doesn’t mess around. One day spent not shielding yourself from the sun and the consequences could be dire. Far worse than unwanted tan lines, or looking like a tomato, is the dreaded “Devil’s Itch.” If you’ve never experienced “Devil’s Itch,” consider yourself lucky. After spending too long in the sun, a persistent and uncontrollable stabbing/burning sensation begins. Scratching, aloe, a cool breeze – none of these treatments can give relief any more. The only cure? Take a hot shower to open the pores, dry off, and slather peppermint oil over the affected area. Repeat as necessary. With fresh sunscreen applied, the Weekly asked locals…

“One time I was on the boat, had forgotten to put on sunblock, and got burned really bad on my back – to the point I wasn’t able to lay down because it hurt so much,” said Jennifer Gallo, director of Children’s Programming for Key Largo’s YMCA.

“It was probably in Key West several years back. We went snorkeling with relatives and spent just about the entire day face down in the water. Burning so badly wasn’t even something we thought about at the time. Before I knew it my entire body from head to toe was burnt,” said Jordan Budnik of the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center.

“It’s been a while since I’ve had a bad one. The last time, I was at the beach with my son and granddaughters.

We were there a while so I got pretty burned,” said Marilou Osteen, of Key Largo Fisheries.

lorida Keys Electric Cooperative has introduced a solar loan program for customers in the Middle and Upper Keys. The loans, up to $20,000, are for qualified electric customers to buy and install grid-tied systems capable of sending energy back to the utility, or battery backup solar systems capable of powering the house during an outage. The loan payments would be made on the customer’s monthly electric bill.

“At FKEC we are committed to enabling our memberconsumers to explore green energy practices,” said CEO Scott Newberry. “We hope to make it easier for interested members to purchase a solar photovoltaic system and/or grid-tied battery storage system. With our solar loan program our member-consumers can finance their solar purchase directly with us and

make convenient payments through their monthly electric bill.”

“We’re really excited about this program,” said Lisa Kaul, project manager for SALT, a local company that installs solar systems. “This is perfect for folks who want to have a solar array, but haven’t been able to save up the cash.”

Kaul said the average home can benefit from a 5 kilowatt system, which typically cost about $20,000 for engineering, permitting, installation and equipment.

“A 5 kilowatt system could be expected to offset about 800 kilowatthours each month. I think that the average residential customer in the Keys uses about 1,200 kilowatt-hours each month,” Kaul said. “This would equate to around $75 each month less on an electric bill, at current FKEC rates.”

There are tax benefits to installing a solar system, too. There is a 30 percent federal income tax credit that can also be applied to the home improvement. Plus, any increases in a home’s value due to the solar improvements won’t increase property taxes.

FKEC communication consultant Nikki Dunn Cullen said the cost to install solar has fallen by half since 2008. “Technology has rapidly improved, including battery technology.

Products such as the Tesla Powerwall will be game changers for solar in the near future as they will be able to store power,” she said.

Kaul said SALT is installing special SunPower panels with built-in microinverters. That means the large, bulky inverter hanging on an outside wall is no longer needed to convert the energy collected from DC to AC for use in the home. Also, each panel can be monitored individually for performance. She added that only about 30

to 40 percent of SALT customers choose to install battery banks, preferring the grid tie-in as it will allow customers to “sell” back the energy year-round, whether homeowners are in residence or not.

Net-metering is the practice of receiving credits on an electric bill for sending energy back to the utility. All South Florida electric utilities calculate the amount of energy sent back to the grid and if it is more than the homeowner used, the utility will pay the customer. However, most solar installers recommend purchasing a system that will provide no more than a homeowner expects to use throughout the year.

Currently, FKEC has 48 members interconnected to the grid (43 residential and 5 commercial).

Since the utility began offering the grid tie-in, it has purchased nearly 1 million kilowatt hours of excess production.

Qualifying for the FKEC solar loan is based solely on the applicant’s credit history with FKEC. The interest rate for the 10-year loan was 5 percent earlier this week; members are advised to check with FKEC for the current rate.

The event’s purpose is to foster a heightened awareness for crime and drug prevention. There are certain people who make the world brighter, prettier and rarely share in the spotlight. That’s Elizabeth (or just Liz) Young’s role in Key West as executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts since 2008. Placing beautiful art in public places, bringing artists into the community and showcasing them on every available blank wall or outdoor space, attracting audiences from around the world to the Keys for the truly unique and visual arts is not an easy task. But the accomplishment can be seen all over, with art and artists flourishing in our community. Young’s background started on the North Shore of Chicago and at Wheaton College where she studied art history and theater. Then she left behind the bright lights, big city of New York in 1987 and didn’t look back. For 30 years, Young has been a part of our community raising her two daughters, joining Leadership Monroe XXII and CFFK Leadership Success Academy. Young was named a CFFK Unsung Hero for her role in the production of “Nutcracker Key West.” From government buildings to the airport to just about anywhere that art can go, Young has helped make the Keys a work of art.

Do you have a life credo or motto?

I do my best to live by the one my husband Gary taught me: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything? Met the man of my dreams, left NYC and my career as a casting director for film, theater and television and moved to Key West! Happily married and raised two beautiful, accomplished daughters!

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket” list? Ahhhh … I don’t have a bucket list!

What’s the most used image in Keys art? The conch shell; close second is palm trees!

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Elizabeth Taylor in the film “National Velvet.”

What is your nerdiest passion?

Needlepoint.

Are local arts moving in the right direction? I’m pleased … there’s more and more variety and lots of growth in the Middle and Upper Keys! Of course I’d like to see our local artists (in all genres) thrive and be challenged and inspired.

What was your first thought this morning? Where’s my coffee?

Favorite guilty pleasure? I have two – potato chips and watching “Say Yes to the Dress.”

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? Cherish the beautiful environment and appreciate all of the people who live here and make it the unique island chain that we all love.

What’s your dream job? I’m doing it! I am honored and proud to do the work of supporting, promoting and enriching all of the arts throughout Monroe County!

tephanie Scuderi has been named market president for the Upper Keys for Centennial Bank. Teresa Condas, division president for Centennial Bank, announced the promotion, saying Scuderi “has done an extraordinary job advancing our brand … In addition, she’s used her creative talents as liaison for our South Florida region marketing efforts.”

A resident of Tavernier, Scuderi joined Centennial Bank (then Marine Bank) more than 10 years ago.

In 2014, she earned her MBA with Honors from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and

recently completed her second year of graduate school of banking at Stonier on the Wharton School campus in Pennsylvania.

Currently the chair of the Florida Keys Community College Board of Trustees, Scuderi serves on the Monroe County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and the TDC’s District Advisory Committee IV. ragging myself out of bed in the morning is way down there on my list of favorite things to do. But on this day, I had a little extra pep in my step as I drove over to the cable park at Otherside Adventure Park on Grassy Key. It was Friday, and like I had done many mornings back in college, I was starting my day wake skating.

See, back then I shared a house at the foot of Orlando’s Lake Waunatta with two other “Keys kids.” The first was my longtime friend, Buck; the other, Upper Keys native and pro wake skating demi-god, Danny Hampson.

It’d be early in the morning while the three of us were lounging around the crusty couch on the back porch, when Buck would say, “Water is glass. Want to hit the lake?” We’d spend the next

hour wake skating behind Buck’s boat or Danny’s Jet Ski before I would stroll into class still drip drying in my board shorts.

But today was going to be a little different. No boat. No jet ski. Not even a wake. Just me, the cable, and the ramps. Since I had become accustomed to riding behind the wake of a boat, I wondered how a cable park would compare.

When I rolled up to the park, I was greeted by operating owner Matt Sexton and his crew. After grabbing my gear, I was quickly told how the cable system works — by remote controlled electric motors to move the handle assembly back and forth over the water. Instructors have complete control over the handle assembly’s speed and location, so if you fall, the crew can return the handle to your position in the water.

I hadn’t ridden in almost two years, but didn’t have any trouble standing up. I did, however, forget to bring some old skate shoes to ride with, so my bare feet had to endure. (Like skateboards, some wake skates use grip tape on the deck, so shoes can help a lot.)

It didn’t take long before I was zipping back and forth, carving and maneuvering with a bit more ease. The smile on my face began to grow with each successful pivot and that familiar feeling of weightlessness instinctively guided each shimmy.

“I have to try the ramp now,” I thought.

The first attempt was pathetic at best. I square up with the ramp, hit it, and my board and I go flying. Only, in opposite directions. The second try wasn’t any better and again my jump ends with me flailing around in the air before I smack the water.

“Trying absorbing the jump more,” yell instructors Leif and Kelly, who are coaching me from the shore. The advice helps and I finally begin to get some air with the board actually underneath me. Try as I might, however, I can’t seem to hang on to the cable handle once I land. After about a dozen times, I decide to let somebody else have a crack at it.

I may not have landed the jump that day, but it was still great to feel the nostalgia of the wind in my beard and sun on my skin. I’ll be back to the cable park soon. I’m only getting warmed up.

County launches vessel turn-in program M

onroe County’s Marine Resources Office, in coordination with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will accept applications through Aug. 18 for its new Vessel Turn-in Program (VTIP).

The federally funded pilot program is for vessel owners who cannot afford to properly dispose of end-of-life boats that are anchored in Florida Keys waters.

The VTIP pilot program provides an opportunity for vessel owners lacking financial means to properly dispose of their boats – at no cost to them – before they become derelict or abandoned. Vessels must be 16 to 40 feet long and vessel owners must meet all eligibility requirements.

JAZZ TRIO TO PAY TRIBUTE Concert to feature the music of Pat Metheny

On Friday, Aug. 4, Café Moka will be the scene for a special night of jazz. The bustling Upper Keys café welcomes percussionist Adolfo Zuniga, keyboardist Abel Pabon, and bassist Robert “Bebob” Grabowski.

Starting at 7 p.m., the three South Florida jazz musicians will be performing songs by American jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, a 20-time Grammy winner. Metheny’s music is a blend of contemporary, Latin jazz, and progressive styles with a broad appeal.

Grabowski, an adjunct jazz studies professor at Florida International University for more than two decades, is writing a book about Metheny’s early years in his personal life and music career.

A friend of Metheny and his bandmates, Grabowski said he’s known the talented guitarist since his years at the University of Miami, where at age 18, Metheny became the youngest teacher in the university’s history.

What makes Metheny’s music special is his approach to writing, said Grabowski.

“The compositional approach he takes is very orchestral. The melodies are also superb,” he said.

Grabowski will be performing songs that concentrate on Metheny’s early and middle years, including songs from the popular album “Still Life Talking,” and songs from the “Falcon and the Snowman” soundtrack album.

Before the concert, Cafe Moka will make its dinner menu of flatbreads, tapas, beers and wine available.

“Along with the regular menu, we will also be serving our special Duck Leg Confit. The duck is slow cooked in spices and natural fats before we oven-roast it and serve it along with our scalloped potatoes,” said Café Moka owner Pierre Marc Bellion.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For reservations, call Café Moka at 305-453-6271 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Cafe Moka is located at MM 91 Oceanside, in Tavernier.

A

year ago, Jessica Hogan was participating in her first art festival at the Pembroke Pines Arts and Crafts festival in Miami. Though she had no formal art training, Hogan always enjoyed being creative.

“I’m able to find beauty in all aspects of life. One thing I try to do with my artwork is find something I think is beautiful, and portray it in a way that others will also find beautiful,” said Hogan.

Having moved to Key Largo in April to work as a marine biologist, she has plenty of inspiration around now. Hogan says she’s inspired by the surrounding marine life, landscapes, and sunsets. Her art work features marine and coral life.

Her typical medium is acrylic paint, but she also works in oils when she has the time. Since attending her first festival, Hogan has created more than 20 original pieces.

“One of my favorites is an oil painting of a loggerhead turtle. It was my second oil painting and the first original I’ve sold; it was a rewarding experience,” she said.

Aside from painting, Hogan has dabbled in mixed media creations. One of her current works was made with acrylic paint as a background and a few hundred sea shells used to make a sunset. She also has painted works of places she’s visited with family, like the beach at Pawley’s Island and the mountains from Red River Gorge in Kentucky.
