“My grill,” said a schmoozing Dempsey Ballard. “And grilling with my favorite — Major Age.” Note: Major Age is Ballard’s direct supervisor, so take note, as it never hurts to grill with the boss.

“My M4 machine gun,” said Donnie Catala, who has been on the MCSO SWAT Team for 20 years. “Of course I’m going to say that.” Note to bad guys: Don’t mess with Donnie Catala.

Crane doesn’t even carry one!” Hernandez, who has been with MCSO since 1988, went with her second favorite, the siren box on the patrol car. (It is not clear when MCSO will allow Crane to carry a Taser.)

“The restraint chair,” said Cece Hoversen, who received nods of approval from nearby co-workers and other community members. Evidently, the restraint chair would be a useful tool for any business dealing with rowdy, drunk, disorderly or downright vulgar patrons. The Weekly ordered two this week.

There are certain people who make the world brighter, prettier and rarely share in the spotlight. That’s Elizabeth (or just Liz) Young’s role in Key West as executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts since 2008. Placing beautiful art in public places, bringing artists into the community and showcasing them on every available blank wall or outdoor space, attracting audiences from around the world to the Keys for the truly unique and visual arts is not an easy task. But the accomplishment can be seen all over, with art and artists flourishing in our community. Young’s background started on the North Shore of Chicago and at Wheaton College where she studied art history and theater. Then she left behind the bright lights, big city of New York in 1987 and didn’t look back. For 30 years, Young has been a part of our community raising her two daughters, joining Leadership Monroe XXII and CFFK Leadership Success Academy. Young was named a CFFK Unsung Hero for her role in the production of “Nutcracker Key West.” From government buildings to the airport to just about anywhere that art can go, Young has helped make the Keys a work of art.

Do you have a life credo or motto?

I do my best to live by the one my husband Gary taught me: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything? Met the man of my dreams, left NYC and my career as a casting director for film, theater and television and moved to Key West! Happily married and raised two beautiful, accomplished daughters!

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket” list? Ahhhh … I don’t have a bucket list!

What’s the most used image in Keys art? The conch shell; close second is palm trees!

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Elizabeth Taylor in the film “National Velvet.”

What is your nerdiest passion?

Needlepoint.

Are local arts moving in the right direction? I’m pleased … there’s more and more variety and lots of growth in the Middle and Upper Keys! Of course I’d like to see our local artists (in all genres) thrive and be challenged and inspired.

What was your first thought this morning? Where’s my coffee?

Favorite guilty pleasure? I have two – potato chips and watching “Say Yes to the Dress.”

If you could grant Key West one wish, what would it be? Cherish the beautiful environment and appreciate all of the people who live here and make it the unique island chain that we all love.

What’s your dream job? I’m doing it! I am honored and proud to do the work of supporting, promoting and enriching all of the arts throughout Monroe County!

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Finish the sentences …

Art in the keys is … everywhere, vibrant and always evolving!

My friends and family would describe me as … busy, thoughtful and someone who stays up too late.

When I go, I will go … having lived my life to the fullest.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Being green in the Keys

O

ver the past decade, the Keys have made tremendous progress with recycling efforts but there is always more to accomplish. Talking with Dee Dee Green, the City of Key West’s solid waste and recycling coordinator, and Alicia Murchie, Monroe County waste recycling and waste reduction specialist, was informative and eye opening in many regards. “In the City of Key West we want our focus to be on ‘waste diversion,’” said Green. “Don’t create the waste in the first place, if possible, but when created how can it be reused or recycled? Disposal should be the last option.”

How has recycling gone up in the Keys in the past decade?

KEY WEST: The recycling rate in the Keys has gone up over the past decade from 8 percent when programs were first implemented to 24 percent in 2017 (so far). This is only counting traditional recycling, metals and yard waste.

MONROE COUNTY: Recycling has improved in the last decade. Curbside recycling began countywide in 1992 with the two-colored bin system and recycling rates remained relatively flat until 2012 when Key West switched to larger “wheelie” bins with singlestream recycling (all materials in a single receptacle). The county followed suit in 2014 and the higher capacity and ease of use with the bigger bins naturally led to more recyclables. The large jump from last year to this year is due to it being the first year the county received 100 percent recycling credits for the composting and mulching of yard waste. Another contributing factor was a larger quantity of construction and demolition debris, and corrugated paper being recycled. As of now, we rank third highest in the state for recycling.

What are some of the county and city’s new initiatives to improve recycling and education?

KEY WEST: Very soon we will be adding an app to our website called My Waste. With this web app anyone can go to our website at www.KeyWestRecycles.com and use the waste wizard or download the phone app.

The waste wizard will tell you how to recycle, reuse and dispose of any item queried. It will also let you type in your address and get your waste pickup schedule. You can ask for reminders, get messages for any changes or road closures. There will also be signage around town so that visitors can log in and find the information easily so there is no doubt when recycling!

There is also a recycling sorting game to help learn how to make these

decisions and for entertainment. We are distributing cutting boards with recycle information right on them to residents, rental management companies, rental units, etc. This will hopefully help get the right information to the people who need it. Some of our new programs include: Keep Key West Beautiful’ s Adopt-A-Spot program, and programs to address cigarette butts, rigid beach plastics and alkaline battery recycling.

MONROE COUNTY: Our slogan sounds like a pirate — “ARRR.” It stands for Avoid, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. At the county we want anyone who lives or visits here to be able to find the information they need and make it easy to do the right thing. This will include a revamp of the website, outreach, and printed materials (in multiple languages), such as a more detailed recycling guide, as well as printable signs and stickers for folks to request or print themselves. We are also making a residential recycling brochure that plays on the Keys’ long history of “wrecking” (marine salvage) and resource recovery and provides useful information for the modern recycler.

Is mandatory business recycling on the horizon?

KEY WEST: We are looking at mandatory recycling; it is part of the city’s solid waste master plan. The goal is to take a timeline to the Key West City Commission in August to outline future plans for the solid waste master plan which include: mandatory recycling for commercial accounts, implementing a comprehensive public outreach campaign, investigate local opportunities to utilize source-separated commercial glass in the Lower Keys, more “green” partnerships, pilot a source separated curbside organics program, establish a commercial organics program, enforce mandatory recycling, look for more diversion opportunities, look for more ways to partner with Monroe County.

MONROE COUNTY: In Monroe County it costs businesses about 60 percent less for recycling pickup than regular waste pickup. On average, 70 percent of any given waste stream is recyclable, and switching from twice-weekly pickups of four 65-gallon trash bins to two recycling and two trash bins saves more than $100 per month. Most businesses dispose of far more recycling than that, and without naming names, some of your favorite and most successful businesses in the area are saving tens of thousands each month by recycling. Monroe County also pays less to have recycling hauled to the mainland, so the more residents and businesses recycle, the more the entire community saves.

What’s the most important take-away about recycling for Keys residents?

KEY WEST: All the waste created on this island has to be shipped off the Keys to the mainland. That is expensive and it is much cheaper to recycle. With that said, when you toss items that are not recyclable into the recycling cart you are creating a problem and raising costs of recycling, so the most important thing you can do is “recycle right!” Sometimes it is easier to pick just a few items to recycle: paper, metal, cardboard, plastic, glass bottles and jars.

MONROE COUNTY: Recycling is really only a choice of which cart you put something in. It’s easy, and quickly becomes a habit. That applies to both residents and businesses.

Don’t put plastic bags or Styrofoam in your recycle bin.

Add baking soda to the bottom of your garbage cart to help keep it fresh.

Publix has containers for recycling Styrofoam and plastic bags in front of both stores. Winn Dixie collects plastic bags for recycling.

Home Depot has rechargeable battery and CFL lightbulb recycling collection boxes in the front of the store. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office collects old medications for disposal 24 hours a day.

When disposing of items too large for the garbage or recycle cart, call Waste Management at 305-296-8297 and schedule a bulky waste pickup; it’s part of your garbage service.

Household chemicals and electronics cannot go into the garbage or the recycling carts. They must be brought to the events that are held on the first Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon at 1801 White St., Indigenous Park. This is a program for local residents only.

he annual Blessing of the Fleet at Stock Island Marina Village brought in about 40 commercial boats and several recreational boats to be blessed by clergy from St. Mary’s church. In both English and Spanish, the boats were blessed before lobster season starts. Traps were dropped on Aug. 1, while season opens Aug. 6.

Cliff Cody calls Key West ‘my favorite place to play.’ CONTRIBUTED

A

lthough he lives in Ohio, singer-songwriter Cliff Cody spends more time performing in Key West than living at home. Originally from Odessa, Texas, Cody honed his songwriting skills as a staff writer at EMI (SONY) in Nashville.

Then in 2006, he was invited to play the Key West Songwriter Festival, and ever since has become a regular main act performer in Key West.

With his publisher at the time, he stopped in to see fellow performer Clint Bullard at the Hog’s Breath Saloon. Bullard asked Cody to do a few songs while he took a break. “Charlie Bauer was general manager at Hog’s Breath at the time, and must have liked what he heard. A few months later Charlie called and asked if I could come to Key West to play. At that time I was a writer, not a performer. I accepted the

gig not realizing it was a four-hour gig for 10 nights.” Four hours is a long time for a writer and first-time performer, especially for one who had serious stage fright. But this first gig at Hog’s Breath proved to be the cure for Cody’s stage fright.

“In the middle of the first song I felt the stool giving way. I was hoping to get through the song, but before the song ended, sure enough, it gave way and I fell into a tree.

The crowd loved it, it became a funny joke and helped me get over my stage fright.

“Now I have about 10 hours of cover songs that I can perform besides my own material. Word got out and now I am performing 250 gigs a year in Key West, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, Austin, Texas and Ohio.”

Cody has written a couple hundred songs. “I like story songs, songs that are visual and bring out emotion for the listener. There’s always a little bit of truth in all my songs.”

“I love Key West. ... It’s like being on tour, except everyone comes to you.”

artender Merri Brown landed in Key West a lot like many others — she was tired of cold winters up north and she knew someone who was already in town. Making a call to her sister, Janine, who also bartends at Pier House, she had a place to stay and a line on a job at the waterfront beach bar at Pier House.

“Look at my office,” she said recently while shaking up cocktails for the Habitat for Humanity concert fundraiser on the beach. “You can’t beat a view like this.”

She said the most popular cocktail at the beach bar is, without a doubt, the Pier House Punch made with four different liquors. “It’s a show to watch any of the bartenders make it,” she said. “We’ve perfected the art of the pour; three bottles at the same time.”

When she isn’t working, she’s enjoying good food and spirits all over town. “When I’m not here, I want to be served,” she said.

Key West Zonta Club offers breast cancer screenings

The Zonta Club of Key West in partnership with Womankind and Department of Health in Monroe County will be offering free breast cancer screenings, vouchers, and breast exams for women without health insurance or who are underinsured.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Key West High School, and which one is the most important to you? I am involved in cheerleading and competition cheer squad. I am in many clubs like Beta, CSALT, Mu Alpha Theta, and more. I would consider cheerleading and Beta as the most important to me because I love cheerleading, and I am an officer in Beta Club.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? I believe my criminal justice class has best prepared me because it helped me be informed of my rights and real life problem solving when it pertains to the law.

What is your favorite social medium and why? My favorite social medium is Instagram because I get to see what all of my friends are up to as in vacations and activities. I follow people that I know, like my friends, family, and even some familiar faces.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? Affordable housing. It is difficult for people to get acceptance for them and it costs a lot of money.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to attend University of Florida or Florida State University and cheer there. I plan to study pre-law.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? I do plan to make the Keys my permanent home because all of my family lives here.

THE WEIRD SEX OF UNDERWATER CREATURES HOW SHARKS, LOBSTER, BONEFISH GET IT ON

W

hat you don’t know … is astonishing. For example, Weekly staff learned about the sexual habits of lobster (more below) while preparing for the annual mini-season.

And then, there’s the tale, or should we say arm, of the Argonaut octopus that impregnates its mate by ripping off one of its own modified tentacles and leaving it behind with her. We didn’t include that information below, because it’s not a native Keys species, but here’s some startling information about the reproductive habits of local animals.

LOVE BITES During the mating of sharks, the male has to hang on with every means available. Descriptions of the male organ and reproductive process include terrifying terms: a modified pelvic fin called a “clasper” complete with “spurs” that unfurl in the female’s cavity. In addition, the male shark uses a “hydraulic” system filled with seawater to propel sperm deep into the female. Last but not least, the male sharks bite their partner’s head, or gill or pectoral fin, to hang on as the two go for a crazy “corkscrew” (not my pun) ride. Good news: it only lasts a few minutes. “Stingrays will do the same thing. It’s quite rough,” said Ben Daughtry of the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters.

A MOUTHFUL There are some species of marine life called “mouth brooders.” In the belted cardinalfish, the male of the species holds the eggs in its mouth and holds them for incubation, according to fishbase. org. During that time, the males don’t eat (although sometimes a few eggs are found in the stomach cavity). Also, the cardinalfish have a very specific courting ritual — the girl makes the first move and the couple stays together throughout the process.

YOU SCRATCH MY BACK …

By human standards, the process of inseminating one’s spiny partner leaves something to be desired. In essence, the male lobster entices the lady into its cave and places a “tar” spot on her belly. When she is ready to hatch eggs, she “scratches” the spot to release his seed and inseminate the eggs. She then holds onto the 40,000 to 140,000 eggs for two to three weeks before climbing on top of the tallest coral head and releasing them into the currents.

GROUP LOVE There is a type of underwater sex called “broadcast” spawning. In the Keys, it most famously happens at Riley’s Hump off the Dry Tortugas a few times a year involving snapper or grouper. It’s sort of like a bait ball, but for mating purposes. The females dive and then, as they head to the surface, they release the eggs into the water column. The snapper tend to head to the same spot over and over, usually deep waters (40 to 100 feet), on the edge of the reef or some other type of drop off. Interestingly, researchers from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) observed bonefish doing the same thing in 30 feet of water in the Bahamas. Normally skinny water inhabitants, the “ghosts” go deep for the purpose of releasing eggs to float on the current.

et that kilt out of the closet and “prepare for a thrilling romp,” as the Key West World Culture Dance Series continues with a focus on Ceilidh (pronounced KAY_LEE) Scottish Dancing.

The six-week Key West World Culture Dance Series, produced by Pamela Connolly, continues on Monday, Aug. 7. Future weeks will include Argentine tango, Bachata, Brazilian Zouk, and East Coast swing. The series is presented by Key West Art & Historical Society in partnership with Brazouka Dance Key West.

“Wear Scottish plaid (a kilt if possible!) and prepare for a thrilling romp,” said Pamela Connolly, the force behind the dance series who is partnering with the society to teach excellence in partner dancing. Connolly is a professional dance promoter, teacher

and dance competition judge, who has formed and developed international dance companies in the UK and Brazil.

In addition to the Ceilidh Scottish dancing class on Aug. 7, upcoming classes will be: Argentine tango (Aug. 21), Bachata ( Sept. 4), Brazilan Zouk ( Sept. 18), and East Coast swing (Oct. 2). Classes will begin with a brief lecture on the history and special

features of the dance, followed by lessons. Beginners and all ages are welcome, partners are not necessary, and watchers are welcome provided they have registered. Students should wear comfortable clothing, and either socks or bare feet if they do not have dance shoes.

“When people come to these workshops they will experience a world circumnavigation in thrilling dance styles, plus the excitement of moving their bodies in joyful and interesting ways,” said Connolly.

In addition to Connolly, faculty for the series includes Venezuela native Henry Velandia, a New York-based Salsa champion hailed as one of New York’s most popular teachers in his field, Ronny Dutra, an established professional dance instructor and choreographer from one of the most prestigious dance studios in New York (Dance With Me USA), and Master Braz, an original member of the famous Kaoma Company. rare painting depicting a 19th century show of naval force in Key West as a way to avert a war with Spain is on display at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front St., Key West.

“The Virginius Affair” by I.H.F. Düksen is the only known painting that depicts an unprecedented show of naval force that helped postpone war between the United States and Spain in early 1874.

“Essentially, if we went to war in 1874, the United States would have had a difficult time winning due to its outmoded naval fleet,” said curator Cori Convertito. “Instead, the country decided to send a large number of Navy ships to Key West to flex its muscles in front of the Spanish who ruled Cuba, the site of the incident that sparked the affair.”

The painting is part of the Key West Art & Historical Society’s ongoing celebration of the connection between the U.S. Navy and the island of Key West with a Custom House Museum exhibit, “The Navy in Key West,” which runs through December. Held in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Naval Air Station Key West, the exhibit explores how the island and the navy have relied on each other by highlighting unique images, artifacts, uniforms and military memorabilia along with interactive displays for learning about Key West’s maritime past.

HUMAN SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDS 26 NON-PROFITS FOR COUNTY FUNDING

I

n 1991, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners created the Human Services Advisory Board, which reviews applications from not-for-profit organizations that provide needed health and social services for the citizens of Monroe County and then makes funding recommendations to the County Commission.

In the proposed fiscal 2018 budget, the advisory board recommends 26 non-profit agencies in the Keys receive a combined funding of $2 million – the same amount that was allocated this year. The Board of County Commissioners reviews the recommendations and makes decisions on funding in September during the budget process. All HSAB funding is paid as reimbursements.

The proposed $2 million funding is 0.44 percent of the total proposed County budget of $455 million and 3.25 percent of the $61.5 million General Fund budget, which is supported by property taxes.

Community-based agencies use the county funding to help thousands of Keys citizens, young and old. These organizations also have been able to use the funds as leverage to obtain outside funding through state, federal and private grants.

“This is probably one of the most helpful things we do for the county with our tax dollars,” said Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy, who served on the Human Services Advisory Board for many years. “We are one of the few counties in Florida that support our non-profits in this manner. It not only allows the non-profits to take care of our citizens who need help, short term or long term, but it also allows the nonprofits to leverage the funding for tens of thousands of more dollars in outside grants.

“And, when we help those in our community, it makes Monroe County a better place to live for all of us.”

For fiscal 2018, service providers included in their applications how they plan to use the funding. Here are a few examples: • The Monroe Association of ReMARCable Citizens said some of its funding would be used for its 12.5 percent match of state funding for its Adult Day Training program. The funds will support 106 people with intellectual disabilities on a variety of “daily valued routines” that include: vocations in horticulture, janitorial and food preparation; financial, self-help, adaptive and social skills; and supported employment in the community.

• The Autism Society of the Keys said the money would help with costs for initial applied behavioral therapy screening, child-friendly autism awareness reading books and special needs products that include autism-specific secure car seats, backpacks, personal trampolines, private swim lessons and sensory vests.

• Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition said the funding would provide subsidized prenatal care and mental health services for pregnant and post-partum women who are uninsured and underinsured in Monroe County.

• AIDS Help of Monroe County said the county funding would support its community-based RN project n which licensed registered nurses provide assessments to determine the best level and intensity of care for each individual. The goal is to serve 125 people.

The Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Florida Keys said it uses the funds to offset expenses for professional, licensed medical and clinical staff to provide medically necessary home health, palliative and hospice care to uninsured and underinsured Monroe County residents.

s a child I watched the Griswolds tackle Wally World, Christmas, even Europe, on their “Vacations” but I never grew up wishing to be Ellen.

Yes, the mother who seemingly took a Valium every morning before telling her husband Clark to manage his holiday expectations while two smart-ass children rolled their eyes at their parents. Hi. I’m now Ellen. When our two boys were born, my metrosexual husband changed his designer shirt for a fanny pack, oversized sunglasses from CVS and started mapping out trips like it was 1983. Since the first diaper, it’s been a holiday road.

My editor, bless her, wanted me to do an adventure story like riding a golf course crocodile — but I don’t seek thrills, they find me well

enough. Every summer I pack up the kids and follow my husband to his homeland of Germany armed with iPads (bless you Steve Jobs), seven passports (they have dual citizenship, not me), two international drivers licenses and one loaded Kindle. For 13 years, I have succumbed like Ellen to whatever may happen. And it’s happened, no diapers or formula available just because it’s Sunday, nein?

Watched the family fight over fleisch salad (that’s meat salad, folks, and it can bring down an empire). Been lost in the rain at 3 a.m., no subway, no taxi, no handy (cellphone) but I saw Klitschko fight, so totally worth it. Handed my crying baby to a woman in a burqa, just two kind eyes, who soothed him like Mary Poppins.

Went to Legoland in Denmark, not Florida. I’ve dealt with a vomiting 3-year-old in airport security at 6 a.m. and talked a 5-year-old out of a locked bathroom in the Tuscany.

No, I don’t need more excitement, just Weisswein, danke.

But now looking at my husband in his sensible shoes and hearing my kids speak fluent German, I am amazed by the road less traveled. I can navigate the city of Hamburg alone and shop at the Edeka, the German Publix. (For some fantastic, intuitive reason they offer mini liquor bottles, not candy, at the checkout.) I have gotten used to my in-laws look-

ing at me like a giraffe in a sheep field and am over the need to prove I know things although unable to communicate anything. Ich bin schlau! (I am smart!).

Every year we go to Miniature Wonderland, the most amazing model train museum, but it’s a battle to beat the crowds. This year we made it, Sunday 8:30 a.m., and what did my husband, a.k.a Clark, say unprompted as we left with happy kids, “ Hah! We are the Griswolds and we are pros!”

HILARITY FOR CHARITY Bars face off in annual battle

Workers at Key West bars will face off in the 24th annual Battle of the Bars benefit on Sunday, Aug. 6 at noon at Schooner Wharf bar at the foot of William Street. Teams of seven “soldiers” from local bars and restaurants compete in an obstacle course to mix and serve a perfect margarita, sort recyclables, tap a keg, pour seven draft beers, carry the tray across a balance beam, and then chug a beer with the team until each member can place the glass upside down atop their head. Teams with the fastest times advance to the next round. Teams are encouraged to bribe the judges to buy their way into the next round of competition.
