SUMMER CONCERT RETURNS

Proceeds to benefit Upper Keys MARC

M

ark it on your calendar: Saturday, July 29, from 2 to 6 p.m., the Island Grill at Mandalay will be rocking for the seventh annual Music for MARC concert.

Admission is free, but with every $10 donation, participants earn a new chance to win some of the paddleboards the organization is auctioning off. Tickets for the raffle are currently on sale at the MARC store, located at MM 90.

“There will be music by local musicians like Pasta Pantelo, Tim Dressings, Sunshine, Aaron Austin and Bobz Bunz,” said event organizer Corrine Triviski. “All the money raised stays in our programs in the Upper Keys. One of our goals is to have our clients constantly working, so we often do vocational training, and life skills training, which is funded by events like the concert.”

Supporting MARC events is important, as the organization provides an array of services for adults with developmental disabilities living in Monroe County.

Among its most beneficial services are medical and therapeutic supervision, a service the organization says can help challenged individuals form friendships with those who are non-disabled.

WISH FOR BIG FISH Indiana boy’s dreams of the Florida Keys come true

hanks to the efforts of national children’s charity Kids Wish Network, Greg Stepro experienced the ultimate Keys trip.

Greg, who has Wilson’s Disease (an inherited disorder that involves copper not properly being eliminated from the body), is first and foremost a dedicated angler. One of his favorite television shows is “River Monsters,” and he expected to catch a monster (sportfish) of his own.

Along with his parents, Lisa and Michael, he was invited to stay at Ocean Reef Club for a fun weekend of fishing, fun and a swim with the dolphins of Dolphins Plus.

The first day, Greg and his family went out fishing aboard Key Largo’s Round Up Fishing Charters. It wasn’t long before Greg hooked on to his first skipjack tuna. After it was all said and done, Greg says he very much enjoyed the day offshore.

“I thought it was a pretty fun day,” said Greg – adding that he was exhausted afterward. “First I pulled up a 25-pound skipjack tuna, then a couple hours later we were catching mahi.”

An Indiana native, Greg often fly-fishes with his father in rivers and streams back home.

The second day of activities was even more fun. Dolphins Plus Bayside welcomed Greg for a dolphin encounter.

Trainer Evan Norris guided them through the facilities and explained the various functions and responsibilities.

“Greg is here for a shallow-water dolphin encounter where he’ll learn a lot of anatomy of the dolphins he’s meeting, like where on a dolphin hair is located when they’re born,” said Norris. “Dolphins – even the females – are born with a little baby dolphin mustache. So to be classified as a marine

mammal, mammals have to have hair at some point in their life.”

Pressed as to which dolphin had the fullest beard, Norris said “I’m pretty sure that’s Ige.” Along with dolphin mustaches, Greg had the chance to get up close and personal with Ige, Hurlee, and Axl to learn about their anatomy. Part of the experience included painting with the dolphin and teaching Greg hand signals – like how to ask for a tongue wiggle.

Since Greg is a big fan of Animal Planet, and because it’s Shark Week, Norris also promised to teach Greg how to ask the dolphins to do their best shark impression.

Dolphins propel themselves through the water by moving their tails up and down. Sharks, on the other hand, move their tails from side to side.

After learning commands and signals from Norris, Greg commanded the three “Southside Boys” as if he was a seasoned trainer.

“The dolphins were really cool,” said Greg.

More than anything, Greg said, he’s excited to return home and tell his friends how he caught some really big fish and swam with dolphins. He hopes he can return soon to play with the dolphins again.

t 21 years old, Alexa Wheeler was already working the real estate scene in Gainesville after graduating from the University of Florida. After some time in North Florida, it was back to South Miami with her husband, to own and operate a gas station during the very beginnings of self service. During those years, the couple purchased their second home in the Keys, and eventually, made the move south. After arriving and working three years in the vacation rentals industry, Wheeler decided to start Freewheeler Vacation Rentals in 1987.

Five years later she opened Freewheeler Realty.

Wheeler has a little more free time now to vacation herself. She spends that time riding around on her Harley Wide Glide and flying around in her Cessna.

Much like she did as a kid, she travels the country extensively. She’s been to the Bahamas, St. Thomas, all over Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, and is considering completing her “dream trip” sometime soon.

What’s the biggest difference in the vacation rental business over 30 years?

ible. Everything is online. That and the governmental regulations.

What’s the most rewarding apart of helping someone find a home to stay in? Having visitors turn to me and say, “That’s the best vacation I’ve ever had, and I’ll be back next year.”

How does the vacation rental industry compete with trending companies like Airbnb? We work with those vacation booking platforms.

Our new reservation system is integrated with those sites like VRBO, HomeAway, Airbnb, and Trip Advisor. It’s helped us.

Had you not gone into real estate, what could you see yourself doing? I would have stayed in the gasoline business. Before I looked into the real estate business I thought about buying a gas station down here. I looked at two places in the Upper Keys, and had that come to fruition I would have probably stayed doing that.

You and your husband met at the tender age of 15, and have been together ever since. Do you remember your first date? We met water skiing. He went with a bunch of guys, and I went with a bunch of girls. We met one Memorial Day weekend. Our first date he picked me up and we went to Jimmy’s Hurricane in Coral Gables. In the backseat of his friend’s Volkswagen bug, the radio broadcast its nightly “kissing tone” and we had our first kiss.

Speaking of story book endings, you also are an avid reader. What’s your favorite book? I read at least one book when I’m away flying. I can’t say I have a specific type. I like the Vince Flynn government James-Bond type of books. Every once in a while I get a free book on the Amazon Kindle.

I also read two or three articles out of my flying magazines in the morning, and the afternoon I’ll pick up my book.

Flying your own plane must be a hoot. Where’s your “dream trip” take you and your Cessna? From Florida to the west coast would be my dream trip. I think she can make it in three days. I just want to fly over so I can see the Pacific Ocean, then come back.

Do you have a nickname for the plane? Hawk, because it’s a Hawk XP. I have an Indian insignia of a hawk hanging from the sun visor, along with the set of wings my first instructor gave me.

If you could have lunch with any historical figure, who would it be, and what would you ask them?

Amelia Earhart. And I would want to ask her, ‘What the heck happened?’

Describe the perfect day spent outdoors. I’d get up early, do a little yard work. Then I’d get out on the boat, and snorkel around, maybe look for lobster. Then I’d ride over and float out in the bay by Founders Park in a noodle.

Being outdoorsy, you must have some survival skills. That being said – you’re offered $10 million dollars to survive in the wilderness for a month. You’re allowed one friend, one tool, and one type of food to eat for the duration of the time.

Who and what do you bring? I’d bring my husband because, he’s a logical thinker. He was also in the Navy. A Swiss Army knife, but a big one, with lots of tools in it; basically a shovel.

And beef jerky, because it’s nutritious, it’ll last, and I like it.

Keeping active is something you say you’ve always done. How would encourage someone to do the same? I would tell them to surround themselves with people who are active the same way. Surround yourself with young people and positive people with the same mentality. And try to do something new every year.

However, through history there has been a love/hate relationship with lipstick. In celebration of National Lipstick Day on July 29, here are some fascinating facts on lipstick.

• Lipstick was invented and worn by women around 3000 B.C. Ancient Mesopotamian women used crushed gemstones to decorate their lips.

• Famous Egyptian Cleopatra VII created her signature red shade by crushing ants and carmine in a base of beeswax.

Artwalk abuzz

J

uly’s Artwalk showed no signs of a lull in the busy season. On July 20, more than 100 locals and tourists came out to stroll the Arts and Cultural District of Islamorada’s Morada Way. The Artwalk had it all – live art demonstration, live music performances, food, libations and laughter. On the third Thursday of the month, Morada Way is the place to mingle with friends or make some new ones.

MOLDING MINDS WITH CLAY GABRIEL SANCHEZ

O

riginally from New Zealand, ceramicist Jill Gerlach has now lived in the States for more than 35 years. Fifteen of those years have been in South Florida – where, after living in different states, she and her husband settled into their Miami home at the start of the millennium.

It was also around that time that she began her hobby of creating mosaics and ceramics. She’s currently the school director of the Ceramic League of Miami.

Now “semi-retired,” Gerlach started visiting the Keys a few days out of the week to help friends launch Gumbo Limbo Pottery in Key Largo in 2014.

“I found working with clay is meditative. It’s a great art form to work with. The clay community is very sharing and it’s nice to see what other people are doing and add it to yours,” said Gerlach.

Gerlach says the most therapeutic part of the process is carving into the clay.

“I find myself becoming immersed in it, being very relaxed, and enjoying the motion,” she said.

“The challenging part is the glazing and putting on the final coat.

Working with clay in the raw form is very forgiving. The glazing can make or break the piece – in terms of your liking it or not.”

Gerlach says her favored ceramic works are typically glazed white porcelain with added gold accents.

Currently, she’s leading workshops at the Tavernier-based community art gallery, Our Place in Paradise, for children and adults.

“Their imaginations can go wild (during workshops),” said Gerlach of working alongside kids. “I give them a simple shape or form, and from that they can do whatever they want. They can add and can take away. I let them be free – they don’t have to stay between the lines.”

Gerlach has workshops scheduled at Our Place in Paradise for the Fridays of July 28, Aug. 11 and Aug. 18. Morning adult workshops are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., children’s workshops are from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

ver heard of an Islamorada Surfer? You have now. Created by Zane Grey Lounge’s Bobbie Stutts, the savory libation is made with Malibu rum, a splash of crème de banana, pineapple juice and blue curacao; the last to achieve the perfect hue of green.

Stutts believes in quality over quantity when it comes to cocktails. “Why not get something delicious?” she said.

Stutts and her family made the move to the Keys in 2007 after having visited consistently since the 1970s. Her husband Cliff is the talented bassist of local favorite, The Carousers.

Together they have two kids.

“My kids grew up snorkeling and fishing in the Florida Keys,” said Stutts, a former Miami resident.

Stutts said she once entered a drink-making contest for Pinnacle Vokda and entered her version of a Key lime pie shot. The “surfer” is the only libation she’s crafted that has graced a menu, however. It’s also the drink of the month at Zane Grey Lounge, so head on down to World Wide Sportsman, and up the stairs to the 1920s-era themed lounge.
