trip through the Lower Keys has Keys residents doing a double take as the iconic Fat Albert blimp appears to have procreated.

Flexing its massive investigative muscles, the Weekly happened to connect with Chip Lyons in hopes of unraveling the Lower Keys blimp mystery.Lyons is the manager of the Cudjoe Key Aerostat Site. He was ready with “answers” for our readers, but he’s also earning every single penny of his paycheck by keeping the secrets of Customs and Border Protection, the agency that manages the blimps. Our conversation went something like this: Are there two blimps in the sky? “I can confirm that there are two flying right now,” Lyons admitted.

Why are there two? “I cannot tell you,” he said, politely.

Well, then, are they same size? “They are different sizes,” he confirmed, measuring his words with economy.

How high can they go? “All the way up … if we would let them,” he chuckled.

What do you, the employees on Cudjoe, call the blimps? “We call them aerostats, or the balloon, or the bag …”

You’re not seeing double. There are two blimps right now in the air over the Keys.

Okay, how long is the tether? “The tether length is not available,” he said, voice cracking.

What is the purpose of the blimps?

His voice strangled with suppressed laughter, he said, “I am not going to explain to you what we do, but we do it for homeland security.”

How long will the two blimps be flying? “I can’t say for sure.” Extra points for cagey and crafty.

By this point, we were both laughing.

I paused for a minute, wracking my brain to think of questions he WOULD answer. He finally told me there are similar blimps along the border with Mexico, one in Puerto Rico and this one in the Keys. The Keys’ aerostat site

And here’s the best part: Honest to goodness confirmation that, yes, one time the Keys blimp did get away. “It got loose and settled down over water.

Three fishermen tied the tether off to the boat. But when the sun came up and superheated the helium, the blimp pulled the boat out of the water and started drifting off …”

Save the date: lionfish derby coming This summer, divers in Florida will once again sharpen their spears, ready their nets, and hone their lionfish hunting skills to compete in the annual REEF Lionfish Derby Series. Their reward: more than $14,000 in cash prizes for bringing in lionfish and the knowledge that they are helping to save native Florida fish species.

When did you decide to join the Upper Keys Manatees? I joined paddle boarding two years ago with my friend Matt.

Do you have any tips for someone just getting started at paddling? Make sure you stand in the middle of the board and don’t splash with your paddle. Dig deep in the water.

What is your favorite part of competing? Competing to win!!!!

How have you prepared for the games? Not missing any practices and I also do lots of pushups to stay strong.

Who has been a big help in preparing you? My coaches. They have helped me with my position and to become faster.

What other sports do you like to watch or play?

I like to play flag football and cycle.

Who is your sports hero or someone you look up to? My friends.

Other than paddling, what other activities do you like to do on the water? I just love the ocean so much. I swim and snorkel a lot.

How long have you lived in the Keys? I have lived in Islamorada almost five years. I moved here from Connecticut.

What are some other ways you stay active in the island community? I ride my bike every day and I walk a lot with my dog Liam.

atthew Dalton and Heyden Fenney joined the Upper Keys Manatees Special Olympics Standup Paddleboard team as a way to stay active and competitive year-round. And they’re about to face some tough competition. Both paddlers are gearing up to hit the water on Saturday, July 15 in the Area 11 Standup Paddle Games at Founders Park.

Thirty athletes from Monroe and Miami-Dade counties are joining the dynamic duo for a chance to qualify for the statewide Special Olympics Florida games in August.

Neither is missing the chance to win this year and both are encouraging other athletes throughout the Keys to get involved with the Upper Keys Manatees and other Unified Sports. The weekend’s events are supported by Jersey Boardwalk Pizza, All Keys Rental, and Paddle the Florida Keys.

When did you decide to join the Upper Keys Manatees? About two years ago.

Do you have any tips for someone just getting started at paddling? Have fun and try to listen to your coach.

What is your favorite part of competing? What makes me the most happy is trying to win a medal.

How have you prepared for the games? I try to practice once a week, stay fit and watch what I eat. I also ride my bike a lot.

What are some other ways you stay active in the island community? I work Monday through Friday at the MARC house in Tavernier. In the mornings we usually go to Harry Harris Park and clean up the seaweed and trash from the swimming area.

hroughout the summer, Tiki Tennis at Founders Park welcomes 20 to 35 campers a week. The camp is geared to help children progress through groups that match their ability. Led by Suzie Jannach and Greg Pearson, the course takes what they’ve learned in their combined 60 years of playing and coaching professionally, and synthesizes it into a five-day camp.

It all starts with the balls. Before graduating to firm professional tennis balls, campers start with three lower levels. Each has a different type of ball, increasing in firmness as players progress through the ranks.

“The red balls are for the young kids who are just getting started. The orange ball court is next.

Most of the kids are around age 8 to 10 in that group. The green dot court is the next promotional level. We encourage the kids to continue getting promoted through their five days here,” said Pearson. “Before we start, we begin with stretching and a little running, then separate into our specific courts,” he said.

On the first day the instructors take their groups and teach them forehand and backhand swings. The next day is designated for developing and returning serves. Wednesdays are for teaching volley techniques. Thursday are for court strategies, and on Fridays the camp separates into two teams that compete in all sorts of fun tennis games like “Around the World,” dodgeball, and triples matches. Instructors also treat the kids to pizza on Fridays.

“It’s really fun,” said camper Jackson Gable.

“We practice in the morning, and then in the afternoon we play games or hit the pool. In the summer we don’t have our usual clinics like we do during the school year. It helps us get better,” said camper Jack Munafo.

“Clinics are every two every weeks, depending on your ability level,” added Gable.

Munafo and Gable are part of the triples team that beat out every adult team. So suffice it to say these middle schoolers are the real deal.

Some of Jannach and Pearson’s campers have enjoyed the clinics and camps so much that they joined Tiki Tennis as assistant instructors, like Mason Baker.

“I learned a lot from Gregg over the last six or seven years he’s been teaching me. I joined the tennis program and was pretty terrible when I started. I played for a little, quit, and came back once Gregg started coaching. All the games and techniques he’s shown me I share with the little kids,” said assistant coach Baker.

On July 1, artists of all ages came by to check out the fun at the Tavernier-based community art gallery. n Saturday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Postcard Inn welcomes paddlers and kayakers to its shores for a beautiful day of paddling, poker and charity – all in the name of honoring those who have served the country in the military or as first responders. The second annual Florida Keys Poker Paddle gives paddlers high hopes that their “luck of the draw” can raise big dollars for the children of wounded warriors.

Anyone can participate in the day’s events, which include a four-mile trek around the island of Islamorada. Throughout the course of shallow waters and sandbars, five stops will give paddlers a randomly selected playing card. After collecting

Fifty years ago, the Upper Keys Rotary Club was founded at the Plantation Yacht Harbor restaurant on the principle of “Service Above Self” by charter members like Tom Fouts, Richard Wood, Edd Adair, Robert Molchanoff, and Floyd Russell.

Today, that spirit is embodied by the likes of Barbara Neal, Marlo DeMoss, Don Horton, Lee Young and John Gallant – dedicated members of an organization responsible for the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market and approximately $200,000 in annual scholarships.

The club commemorated the golden anniversary at the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center as the presidential gavel was passed from Frank Derfler to Jill Miranda Baker. Judi Cooley was named Rotarian of the Year.

ower Matecumbe photographer Tim Rahn has always been a fisherman. His fascination with fish started as a young kid living in New Jersey. His love of the sea started with cutting out pictures from fishing magazines. Fast forward a couple decades and now it’s his photos in the magazines.

From his fishing magazine photographs, Rahn then started making custom prints for customers.

Now his work can be found anywhere and has taken him to incredible places. In books, magazines, cruise ships, calendars and even Netflix’s “Bloodline,” his work has traveled the world.

“It’s always exciting to deliver a piece of artwork that is going to live in an amazing place,” he said.

It’s not about the destination for Rahn, though – it’s the journey. There might be a lot of photographers out there taking pictures of fish, but how many are driving the boat, catching the fish, and capturing the shots all by themselves? Rahn says that part of his craft brings him a lot of pride.

“I was a fisherman first, but I got bored of fishing. So one day I decided I wanted to capture all these things that I see and excite me when I’m out fishing,” Rahn said.

What makes Rahn’s photography striking is the detail. He credits that to his father, who is featured in the Smithsonian Institution for his incredible work as a technical illustrator of engineering.

“He would do precision drawings that were the size of the entire wall, all freehand.

Things that are now done with the push of a button. I’m pretty sure that’s how I got my eye for composition,” he said.

He also points to natural lighting and clarity as the biggest reason his shots seem to pop.

oey Flowers’ signature Ginger Pear is made with ginger liqueur, pear vodka, fresh squeezed lemon and simple syrup and garnished with a pear slice.

The Ginger Pear’s taste is refreshingly tart at the beginning but slowly tapers into a sweet and savory resolution.

Flowers recommends coupling his Ginger Pear with a filet of yellowtail snapper, prepared Fish House’s “Matecumbe” style. Matecumbe style comes with tomatoes, shallots, basil, capers, olive oil, lemon juice and baked.

Flowers said he’s been bartending for as long as he can remember – his family owned restaurants in Virginia – and he likes creating new libations.

He’s received a lot of attention lately after starring with Guy Fieri on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives.”

Also a captain at Rainbow Reef, Flowers spends his free time diving and offshore fishing for dolphin. You can count on him hitting the water at least three to four days a week. Stop by the Fish House located at MM 102 in Key Largo and meet the local television “star.”
