• Christmas in July. Mayor Dan Zieg proposed a community drive to buy new Christmas decorations for the light poles on U.S. 1 in Marathon.

(There are some 60 poles with “drops” capable of illuminating the ornaments.) To get the community going, he personally donated $1,000. In the past, the decorations were rented.

Recently, the city began buying its own for display at Marathon Community Park. With the addition of the utility building expected to be complete in October, Marathon has the room to store the decorations it purchases, which may include discreet sponsor signs.

• Overseas Highway toll. Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron brought forth a motion to support the discussion of a highway toll already endorsed by the Village of Islamorada and Monroe County. With enough support, research will begin to see if a toll on a federal highway is possible, and if the proceeds can be directed to local projects.

• Support for Fire Cadets. Councilman Mark Senmartin proposed a city-backed loan program to recruit young locals interested in becoming firefighters in Marathon. Firefighter training tuition, which ranges from $4,000 to $7,000, will be covered for firefighters who agree to stay in the city for a certain amount of time. It’s proposed that the no-interest loans then be repaid from the paychecks of firefighters and emergency services personnel. The program is geared toward local students who would stay in their hometown.

• Council meeting schedule.

Zieg brought the issue of changing the meeting schedule to just once a month, and leaving the other date open for workshops if needed. Zieg and Councilman Steve Cook both supported the idea, citing a relief for staff and the fact that in the past eight months, council has met only once a month. Senmartin urged the meeting schedule be kept the same and continue the “cancel as needed” practice.

Councilman John Bartus agreed with Senmartin, asking, “How would we better serve the people of Marathon by going to just one meeting a month?”

Coldiron acknowledged the general need for only one meeting a month.

With the ongoing discussion of whether Marathon should have a community pool, we asked residents:

• Parking. The council directed staff to start a survey of parking spots for businesses along the U.S. 1 corridor in an effort to develop a policy to address the varying availability and come up with an equitable solution.

• Sludge treatment on Coco Plum. Assistant Utilities Director Mark Bombard briefed the council about a $500,000 plan to convert the city’s mobile centrifuge (which transforms sewage sludge into “cake” by dewatering) into a permanent fixture to be located at the No. 6 plant on Coco Plum.

Bombard explained that it is the only plant in Marathon capable of the improvement because it has the existing treatment facility, room to expand, and an injection well where the water spun from the sludge can be put back into the city’s sewer system.

The mobile centrifuge was purchased 10 years ago for $700,000 to reduce costs — it is more economical to ship “cake” to the mainland than it is to ship sludge. Marathon ships about 400 tons of cake a year, or 20 trailers full. The machine currently spends a week or two at a time at each of Marathon’s sewage plants, including plant No. 6. However, Bombard said the machine “doesn’t travel well” and the panels come loose during transport. Last year, the city spent $150,000 to fix the centrifuge, but normal repair costs run about $50,000 a year. If the plan passes, Bombard estimates a savings of about $85,000 a year.

Bombard also stressed that the sludge, cake, and liquid left over from the centrifuge process are not biohazards, nor does it have a noxious odor. (“It has an earthy smell,” Bombard said.) He also said if the plan passes, the only sludge processed will be from Marathon wastewater plants and the cake will still be shipped to the mainland.

Numerous residents spoke in opposition to the plan. The plan was tabled and there will be a public meeting to address this issue on Tuesday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Marathon City Hall.

ust two weeks ago, Baptist Health South Florida took over operation of Fishermen’s Community Hospital. The change is so recent, in fact, that CEO Rick Freeburg’s business card and hospital ID still read Mariners Hospital — his most recent command.

“I just learned that the new tags come in today, though, so the HR department will be issuing those soon,” Freeburg said.

Fishermen’s became a Baptist affiliate on July 1. The six months leading up to the change were incredibly busy, Freeburg said. Not only did hired consultants come into the facility to do the due diligence, but the top management at Baptist had frequent “all hands” meetings.

“There were sixty of us in these three-hour meetings,” said Freeburg.

“It was incredible the amount of planning that went into the transition, and every aspect we considered. For example, with the IT staff they discussed phone systems and new computers, we considered vendor contracts. We even tried to anticipate the volume of trash.

“This move has been more expensive than we anticipated, but we are absolutely committed to make things better for this community,” said Freeburg. “The senior leaders at Baptist Hospital are excited about this opportunity in Marathon, and that sentiment trickles down.”

Freeburg said the most challenging task is taking an existing and complicated structure (the former Fishermen’s) and make it conform to the Baptist South organization and hierarchy (the new Fishermen’s). Of

the 185 employees, all but a handful stayed to go through the new employee hiring process complete with a 90-day probation period. Freeburg said some employees’ titles changed.

“They went from director to manager or manager to supervisor,” he said. Freeburg said the sister hospital, Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, will share some personnel. “For example, we will have one director of nursing for both hospitals. And we will share hospitalists (in-house doctors) and Criticare manages both of the ERs. But none of the former Fishermen’s employees are earning less money than they were in their previous positions.

In fact, some are earning more.”

So, what’s new besides the coming phone system, computers, healthy options on the cafeteria menu and the name tags? Well, there’s a more advanced CT scanner available for Marathon patients. The pharmacy has a more complete inventory. Patients who need to be transferred to the mainland for specialized care not offered at the rural hospital will experience a more seamless transition.

There are plans for physical improvements and possibly a wellness center, or gym open to the public, like the one in Tavernier.

For Freeburg, the mission is simple. He subscribes to Baptist South’s goal of uniting employee engagement with patient satisfaction.

“You can’t have one without the other,” he said. “I wouldn’t have stayed for 30 years if this wasn’t such a good organization.”

Fishermen’s opened in 1959 and is a 25-bed critical access hospital. The emergency room is open 24-hours a day and is staffed by board-certified physicians and specially trained nurses.

T

here are a lot rumors floating around inside the mouth of the shark that has called Big Coppitt home for the past two decades, but none of them can be verified. It’s been said the shark has appeared in movies, possibly a James Bond flick, but we can’t find it. He’s also a Pokemon Go stop, and at times was misused as a trashcan by miscreants.

The new owners, Lori and Barry Gaukel of Shady Palm Art Gallery, are asking for any history on the shark.

“We have christened him ‘Nibbles,’ because we don’t even know if it previously had a name,” said Lori.

The couple tried to buy the shark two years ago, when they fell in love with the piece of art on the side of the road in front of the Hitch King. But at the time, the owners weren’t ready to part with the toothy work of art. A few weeks ago, Lori received a call. “You’re not going to believe this, the shark is up for sale,” said a Lower Keys friend.

Lori bit. She said she wants the shark be a part of Marathon’s quirkiness. “That shark is a part of history,” she said. “We aren’t sure what kind of

history, but we knew we had to have him.”

Lori hopes the shark will bring the gallery “Betsy the Lobster”-type fortune. (Betsy is the gigantic roadside lobster in front of the Rain Barrel Gallery in Islamorada.) “I hope people will stop by and take pictures with Nibbles and use him as a landmark here in Marathon,” she said.

The biggest obstacle they are tackling now is trucking Nibbles across the Seven Mile Bridge. “That’s going to be a sight to see,” she said.

If anyone knows more about “Nibbles” identity, the Gaukels would sure love to hear it. Swing in and climb up Nibbles’ back (stairs) for a picture in the shark’s mouth at Shady Palm Gallery and Photography at 2888 Overseas Hwy., Marathon.

His name is Nibbles.

here’s a pocket of energy in Marathon that’s a little different than its neighbors. It’s on the west end of Marathon, between a coffee shop and a Keysy boutique. Those who pass through the doors of Formula Free Diving – whether to buy carbon fiber fins or spearguns – have a passion for a particular type of watersport.

It’s called freediving. Or breath holding.

Or skin diving. Of course, the Greeks called it sponge diving or … just “getting dinner.”

While the movement is still in its infancy in the mainland U.S., the sport is well established almost everywhere else, including the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. And Andrew Eales, 25, is doing his best to spread the word about the sport at the shop he owns with his dad, Bob. “The difference between tank diving and freediving is that freediving is more rewarding, more challenging. At the end of the day, you feel like you’ve accomplished something,” said

Eales. “For me it’s much easier to do a breath hold than put on all the Scuba gear. It’s also more natural and efficient.”

Besides spreading the good word and selling equipment, Eales also conducts seminars on freediving. The level 1 classes (up to 66 feet) are held twice a month. The level 2 classes (100+ feet) are every couple of months. The instruction offers both classroom learning and real-world practice. It is, Eales said, easier than you think.

Ok, let’s get this right out of the way. How deep? I did a 150-foot free dive in Hawaii in 2016. That’s about a two-minute dive.

So, naturally, you decided to become a retailer and instructor? (Laughing) Yes. But throughout that time I started getting my scuba certifications like open water, nitrox, rescue and cave diving. Then I found Freediving Instructors International and that’s when my passion for freediving really took off.

Do you Scuba dive as well? My girlfriend Brooke is a Scuba instructor, so we go diving together. But I have a rule that anything I do with a tank, I have to best with a free dive.

What do you do underwater? About one third of the time I am training, another third I am spearfishing and the other third I am taking photos.

Is this a young man’s sport? No way.

I get a lot of guys in here that are 50 to 60 years old who stick to shallow water freediving or tank diving. But if those same guys take one of the classes, they can get to 66 feet, no problem.

Why set up shop in the Florida Keys?

Well, I grew up in Ormond Beach, Florida and we would come here on vacation all the time, specifically to lobster and spearfish.

What did you study in college? I got a degree in criminal intelligence analysis from Florida State University, sort of like the psychology of criminals. I also got a minor in underwater crime scene investigation.

Why are fins sold in two parts (foot pockets and blades)? It’s so the customer can get a more customized fit.

What are your favorite fins right now?

I like the Molchanovs. It’s a Russian brand and they’re good for everything.

Who is your dive hero? Martin Stepanek.

What’s most surprising to beginning freedivers? How easy the breathing technique is. In a four-hour class, that only covers about 20 minutes of the instruction. The rest is about streamlining, efficiency, etc.

What’s the most amazing thing about freediving? I think that people love learning about the physiology of what happens to the human body during a freedive.

And yet, there have been very few formal studies. Back in the day, the myth was a freediver couldn’t survive a dive of 200 feet. And now the top competitors are approaching 400 feet. But by learning the physiology of the dive, they become safer and better divers.

What’s the strangest thing in your shop? The bottle of Dawn dish soap on the front counter. We use that to snap the fin blades into the foot pockets.

Finish these sentences …

When I’m not diving … I’m playing Counterstrike. Believe it or not, I’m much more competitive at video games than freediving.

My favorite dive day … is flat seas, overcast, with a light rain. It’s calming and I love the way the rain feels when you’re at the surface.

My hidden talent is … table tennis.

The thing about the Keys is that … everyone is a character and doesn’t want to drive more than 10 miles, but will take their boat 20 miles daily.

The movie I know by heart is …

“The Big Blue.”

The superpower that I want is … gills.

n Tuesday, Marathon’s Senior Planner Brian Shea presented the results of a feasibility study on a community pool to the Marathon City Council. The project is the result of months of work at the behest of the council, after Marathon residents narrowly approved a non-binding referendum question regarding a community pool on the August 2016 ballot.

Earlier this month, the council sent a letter to the Monroe County School Board asking it to build a pool on the property it owns adjacent to Marathon High School.

Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey told the council that School Superintendent Mark Porter declined that request, although has not put it in writing. After the presentation and public comment in favor of the pool on Tuesday, the council decided to write another letter to the school board, this time asking for the Marathon Manor property.

“The first step was the ‘big ask,’” said Councilman Mark Senmartin. “Let’s do the smaller ask. Let’s ask the school board to give us the property. I’m not for a pool or against the pool; I want the best solution for Marathon. I don’t see this as something we can’t do if we do it the right way — with public/private partnerships and with help from the TDC, FKCC, Department of Health, the school board.

Senmartin said with those answers, a more thorough investigation of the costs and size of the pool would reveal whether a community pool makes sense.

Mayor Dan Zieg said one of the biggest sticking points is the cost of the land. If the lot isn’t “free” — i.e., transferred to the city at no cost — then a pool might be out of reach. He cited suitable properties such as JoJo’s on Grassy Key that cost upwards of $3 million.

Five residents spoke in support of a community pool, including Dorothy McQueen. “It’s not about affordability of the pool or what it’s going to cost. We live on water and our kids can’t swim. It’s terrible that we live on an island and kids can’t swim; they’re scared. Let them learn to swim and then go out on the water and be commercial fishermen,” she said.

“And no one’s looking for a (no admission) pool. We should pay to use it.”

No opponents spoke at the meeting.

The report compared the operating costs of the Ron Levy Aquatic Center at Founders Park in Islamorada, Jacobs Aquatic Center in Key Largo, and the Boy Scouts pool on Lower Matecumbe Key. The report included little information about revenue the pool could bring in, other than to say college teams regularly generate $50,000 per year in pool rentals at both Jacobs and Founders. Also, those pools have a 10 percent charge on fees collected by swimming teams, swimming lesson instructors, dive students, etc.

trip through the Lower Keys has Keys residents doing a double take as the iconic Fat Albert blimp appears to have procreated.

Flexing its massive investigative muscles, the Weekly happened to connect with Chip Lyons in hopes of unraveling the Lower Keys blimp mystery.Lyons is the manager of the Cudjoe Key Aerostat Site. He was ready with “answers” for our readers, but he’s also earning every single penny of his paycheck by keeping the secrets of Customs and Border Protection, the agency that manages the blimps. Our conversation went something like this: Are there two blimps in the sky?

“I can confirm that there are two flying right now,” Lyons admitted.

Why are there two? “I cannot tell you,” he said, politely.

Well, then, are they same size?

“They are different sizes,” he confirmed, measuring his words with economy.

How high can they go? “All the way up … if we would let them,” he chuckled.

Okay, how long is the tether?

“The tether length is not available,” he said, voice cracking.

What is the purpose of the blimps? His voice strangled with suppressed laughter, he said, “I am not going to explain to you what we do, but we do it for homeland security.”

How long will the two blimps be flying? “I can’t say for sure.” Extra

By this point, we were both laughing. I paused for a minute, wracking my brain to think of questions he WOULD answer. He finally told me there are similar blimps along the border with Mexico, one in Puerto Rico and this one in the Keys. The Keys’ aerostat site (that’s what the in-the-know folks call ’em) began operation about 1980 and there are 26 employees. Heedless, I plunged back in with more questions: What do you, the employees on Cudjoe, call the blimps? “We call them aerostats, or the balloon, or the bag …”

Is there room for a person on the blimp? “We don’t fly people. But we do bungee jumping every Saturday from 10,000 feet,” he said, giving up all pretense that this was a serious interview.

And here’s the best part: Honest to goodness confirmation that, yes, one time the Keys blimp did get away.

“It got loose and settled down over water. Three fishermen tied the tether off to the boat. But when the sun came up and superheated the helium, the blimp pulled the boat out of the water and started drifting off …”

Nearly 40 students, ages 6 to 18, will be involved when Marathon Community Theatre presents “Into the Woods Jr.” by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine on July 21-22.

The students begin with auditions for on-stage participation and continue their learning through all the details of what happens backstage such as lighting and sound, set design and building, directing and producing, gathering props, costuming, set-dressing and all other responsibilities necessary to produce and present a quality live presentation.

ocal accountant and theater supporter Joanne Zimmerman is teaching beginning tap dance classes on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at Marathon Community Theatre. The course started just last week, and Zimmerman says there is room for more dancers.

“Into the Woods Jr.” features Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and his beanstalk and the Witch. The musical centers on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.

Performances are Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22, at 7 p.m. at the theater, 5101 Overseas Highway in Marathon. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased online at marathontheater.org, at the box office, or by calling 305-743-0994.

“We had six dancers show up,” Zimmerman said. “One young girl had never had tap shoes on before!”

The classes start with the basics — the shuffle, the ball change (crikey, it’s fun to just SAY). Then they branch out into learning dances. Zimmerman said the first song they tackle is “Singing in the Rain.”

“Everyone knows it and they can hum along at home as they practice,” she said.

The classes are free to those with a Marathon Community Theatre membership ($15 for individual and $25 for a family) and are for those 18 years or older. It helps the nonprofit operate, and earns members ticket discounts, but it has benefits for the dancers as well.

“Believe me, we have every generation taking the dance classes,” said Zimmerman. “Tap dancing is good exercise. It’s good for balance and memory and coordination and making new friends.”

Thirty-seven local kids learn about one of the Keys’ most notorious invasive species, the lionfish, on July 11 at Marathon library.

Local commercial lionfisherwoman Rachel Bowman walked the kids through the beginnings of the lionfish explosion in Keys waters, explaining the differences between poisonous and venomous, pointing out which spines hurt, and how to catch them. The presentation was a part of the “Build A Better World” program.

hose of you who are regular readers may recall our periodic and often heroic efforts to promote safer roads and persuade people to use their freakin’ turn signals. Unfortunately, there’s not much good news to report here. A staggering number of Florida Keys drivers still turn without bothering to signal their intentions, except for those drivers who have no intention of turning and cruise merrily along with their turn signals flashing happily, filled with sound JOHN and fury, signifying nothing.

• NO WAKE ZONE SIGNS: most of these are found in canals and inland waterways and suggest that funeraltype services are never appropriate in those locations. Slight speeding is, however, accepted and welcomed — especially by those boaters who are tied up at a dock or slip. Making their boats rock and roll while straining against their lines is just a friendly way of saying hello. Don’t be surprised to see those boaters waving a friendly finger back at you!

• THOSE SILLY MARKERS THAT ARE RED OR GREEN: These are called channel markers and are put there to show the boater where the waterway of navigable depth is located. Can’t remember your red and green from port or starboard? Whatever — you still have a 50 percent chance of guessing correctly. Just motor on through and see what happens.

• BOTTOM COLOR AS DEPTH INDICATOR: remember that old seafaring saying, “Brown, brown, run aground?” It’s just an old (fish) wife’s tale. And it’s your propeller. What do you have to lose, especially if it’s just a rental boat?

• RUNNING LIGHTS AT NIGHT: An overrated safety feature… after all, what are the odds that someone else will be boating in the same vicinity as you at night?

• LOBSTER TRAP BUOYS: Those little buoys and floats out on the water point the way to the potential location of tasty crustaceans. The good news is that no one can remember, at least in recent memory, a trap molester actually getting murdered at sea by a pissed-off lobster fisherman. So… do ya feel lucky, punk?

These are but a few of the Rules of the Water that may apply to you.

Others include fishing in a designated No Take zone, lobstering out of season, bag, size, and slot limits on fish, and believing that you actually own a certain fishing spot or lobster hole.

Several years back, a visiting boater was arrested for chasing away other boaters from “his” lobster hole with his trusty handgun! Nothing says friendliness on the water as much as waving a loaded pistol in a misguided attempt to “protect” a bit of seafloor.

Remember that being a raging jerk on the water isn’t just a solitary activity.

Usually, your friends and family are out there with you to watch you go down in flames.

Train car coming to museum A

t the end of the summer, the train car which has called the base of Knight’s Key home for the past few decades will make the move to the front of Crane Point Museum and Nature Center. In the meantime, while construction starts on Knight’s Key, the Singh family donated a lot of the railroad and other items, once found at the Iguana Grill, to Crane Point last week. The biggest item donated: a 9-foot-long ocean sunfish a.k.a. mola mola replica, thought to be the last one caught in the Keys in 1977. When caught, it weighed 725 pounds and was reeled in by hand.

SUMMER ADVENTURE

Underneath my mom and dad’s fish tank in their living room lives a picnic basket. Not just any picnic basket filled with plates and forks and napkins, but a picnic basket filled with every single crazy memory I had as a child. My dad claims it contains “thousands” of dollars of his hard earned money. There’s many pictures of our boat trips to Dry Tortugas, Bimini, the Barrys, and Cay Sal on my dad’s old 24-foot boat. Other moments didn’t make it to film. Sometimes the best memories aren’t captured on film, or cameras, or iPhones.

W

hen I was young, we would fish EVERY weekend at the Humps. I dreaded the seasickness, the boredom. To beat the doldrums of summer, my dad would tell my brother and me that whoever spotted the first thing on the water — a board, a bird, a bale, a Cuban chug — would receive a dollar.

Chase and I would sit in the front of the boat passing time, pretending to shoot flying fish with our make-believe finger pistols — pew! pew! pew!— joking about riding bulls while hanging onto the bowline. Cowboys of the sea we were. Some flying fish would go down fast to our make-believe shots; some we would miss for minutes on end.

We were about to head in late in the afternoon when in the distance I saw something. I contemplated not saying anything.

I wanted dry land, but I wanted mahi for dinner more. My keen 10-year-old eyes spotted a bird sitting on a pallet. Chase, 8, was jealous of my find as he sipped on a Motts apple juice box and ate the last bologna sandwich from the cooler.

My dad circled the pallet a few times with no hits. Skunked.

Morale was low and gas was questionable as he started heading for home when it happened. Zing, the rod screamed from the back of the boat as my mom started reeling.

Zing, another rod took off as my dad grabbed it. Chase and I kept the boat straight.

Forty-five adrenaline-filled minutes later a bull dolphin sat in our cooler. The cooler was unable to shut because its tail stuck out one end. Another smaller dolphin, a 35 pounder, lay proudly on top of him as we headed for home. Of course, my mom always lucked out with the bigger catch (ask her about her wahoo story...).

COWBOYS OF THE SEA

Coming off plane, with Bonefish Towers barely in sight, the boat ran out of gas. As we waited for TowBoat, the ice slowly melted in the propped open cooler.

We waited. And waited longer.

There are only so many things you can “eye spy with my little eye” in the middle of the ocean, when my dad made the decision to fillet the mahi before there was no ice left.

On the back of the boat, on a makeshift cutting board, he sliced into the fish by the low glow of the moon and a flashlight. That’s when it happened.

As he went to move one fillet of the bull dolphin over, the whole rest of the fish slipped off the back of the boat into the darkest night water. Water deep enough our anchor wouldn’t reach if we tried; water filled with scraps of fish he just cut up.

Without hesitation, he threw his wallet out of his back pocket with a couple cuss words and dove over the back of the boat. My mom, screaming, held the flashlight over the side of the boat. A minute later, he came up with half of the bull 45-pound mahi in his hand. Once he climbed in the boat, he thanked God for marrying a woman with enough sense to shine the light over the back of the boat as Chase and I sat in awe gazing at our crazy, amazing, always adventurous Dad. Now I long for those days, the tiny fishing boat I used to hate, the seasickness, the days I thought staying at home watching TV would be more fun than shooting fish with finger guns on the wide open ocean, those Motts apple juice days. And, more so, I will remember the best dollar I ever made, no pictures needed.
