It’s hot. Like surface of the sun hot, hotter than Georgia asphalt hot, someone turned on menopause hot, not warm but HOT. It’s summer in the Keys and words like scorching, sweltry, sizzling and flaming are falling from our mouths like piping buns from the oven. So we asked locals …

How do you escape the summer heat?

“It’s all about boating, sitting in a sandbar and drinking White Claw,” said Kristina Petree. Okay, so what is White Claw, right? It’s hard seltzer with alcohol in fruity flavors; sounds pretty delightful on a hot day.

“Sit in an air-conditioned bar and drink ice cold margaritas,” said Kelly Jones.

That’s also called a Key West office.

“An ice cold Stella beer and a pool noodle is all I need,” said Lisa Lindenmuth. Marlon Brando did say it best, STELLA!!!!!

“I’m a caveman and only come out at 5 a.m,” said Bobby Kitrick “I just stay away from the sun, and always wear a hat!”

Reverse hibernation, good idea.

“Leave,” said Bruce Neff, “Go on vacation.” Bingo, right answer.

obby Highsmith knew his sophomore year at Duke University (he attended on a football scholarship) that he would return home to Key West. Celebrating his 30th high school reunion this weekend, the valedictorian will attend as a prominent lawyer with Highsmith & Van Loon, P.A., and important member of the Monroe County School Board. In order to find a niche in Key West, Highsmith attained board certification as a specialist in wills, trusts and estate law, the highest standard of excellence established by the Florida Bar. As a father of two and son of two Monroe County educators, joining the school board also was a natural fit. “I am enjoying it more than I thought,” said Highsmith, who will run for a second term in 2018. “The board is very dynamic and determined in the best possible way.”

Do you have a life credo or motto? Work hard, play hard. That was kind of our unofficial motto when I was at Duke, and it has served me well throughout the years.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything? I never thought I would nearly go bankrupt, but I got caught pretty bad in the real estate market crash of the late 2000s. I discovered mindfulness meditation, which has been a Godsend.

Through mindfulness, I have attained a whole new perspective on life, and try hard to truly appreciate everything I experience, both good and bad, because it’s all part of this life we’ve been blessed with.

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket “ list? and one thing you did achieve?

Playing for and starting on a Division 1 college football team. Other than watching my kids grow up hopefully as happy, healthy and responsible adults, my life feels pretty complete. I am happily married, have two great kids, two great jobs and live in paradise. I am an avid reader and would love to write a book one day.

Who’s your favorite TV lawyer?

Jimmy McGill / Saul Goodman.

Why so cautious about drug testing in schools? The one thing we have protecting us is the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I personally believe that suspicionless, random drug testing of students is a violation of their Fourth Amendment rights of freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. I don’t want our students, the citizens of our tomorrow, getting used to this as I am fearful that this will eventually undermine our society’s recognition of the paramount importance of upholding the Constitution and its protections.

What’s an accomplishment of the school board since you joined? The board has taken significant steps in returning stability and has created an environment conducive to a successful school system. Our state ranking has improved from 23rd to 12th since I joined the board. In addition, the voters have repeatedly given us renewals of our ½ cent sales tax and the half mil property tax which has enabled us to complete rebuilding all of our schools into state of the art facilities.

What are your goals before your term ends on the school board?

Will you run again? To push back the Key West High School start time from 7:30 to perhaps 8:15 or 8:30. The superintendent rejected this request this past year citing an inability to find sufficient bus drivers. I am going to continue pushing the district to find a solution to this issue. My second goal is to bring mindfulness meditation practices to our students and teachers.

Pritham Singh has offered to help facilitate this effort. The research on mindfulness training in schools, and the positive effects it can have on student achievement, behavior and overall well-being is quite impressive.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego?

Bond. James Bond. I wish.

If you were invisible, what would you do in Key West? Follow people who allow their dogs to poop in other people’s yards and leave it on their own front porches.

If you could grant Key West one wish? Eco-friendly, high speed monorail from the mainland.

If not a lawyer, what would your secret dream job be? Landscape architect.

Lunch with one famous person: whom would you choose? David Sedaris.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Remembering Otis The Weekly’s review (July 7) of the new biography of Otis Redding mentioned that he died in a plane crash at the age of 26.

I know a lot about his death since his Cessna crashed on December 10, 1967 in the icy waters of Lake Monona in my hometown of Madison, Wisconsin. With him on the Cessna were the five members of his band, the BarKeys, and all but one perished with him in the crash They were probably doomed because the water was so cold in early December. It was a cloudy overcast night but the cause of the crash was never determined. The band was scheduled to play that evening at a nightclub called the Factory near the University of Wisconsin. The absolutely eerie irony is that the band that was to open for Otis was called the Grim Reapers Tim Gatz Key West

Key West Theater hosts student summer camp The Key West Theater School for the Performing Arts will hold a multidisciplinary theatrical summer camp from July 17–21 from noon to 5 p.m. for students aged 13 to 18 at Key West Theater. The camp will focus on teaching students acting, singing, and dancing as well as the vocabulary of the theater, in addition to how to collaborate, fail forward, and create their own art.

In addition to these courses there will be a daily class outside the typical disciplines, including improvisation, songwriting and storytelling. Additional educational programming will be added throughout the school year.

The Gato Village Cigar gets an update Robert Janicki and his team from Paradise Lawn and Garden remove the cigar sculpture from the Gato Village pocket park on Louis Street. Reen Stanhouse’s cigar sculpture will be getting a makeover thanks to the project funded by Arts in Public Places, the Fuentes family (successful cigar makers in the Dominican Republic, with ties to Key West), and Historic Markers. The pocket park was created by Bruce Neff and his wife, Patricia Gato Madiedo, to memorialize the last piece of historic property where 40 cigar rollers’ cottages once stood next to the Gato building.

After the sculpture is finished and reinstalled in November, there will be a big public party (Hemingway Cigars and Pilar Rum included). MYSTERY SOLVED Fat Albert has a baby in the skies over Lower Keys

A

trip through the Lower Keys has Keys residents doing a double take as the iconic Fat Albert blimp appears to have procreated.

Flexing its massive investigative muscles, the Weekly happened to connect with Chip Lyons in hopes of unraveling the Lower Keys blimp mystery.Lyons is the manager of the Cudjoe Key Aerostat Site. He was ready with “answers” for our readers, but he’s also earning every single penny of his paycheck by keeping the secrets of Customs and Border Protection, the agency that manages the blimps. Our conversation went something like this: Are there two blimps in the sky? “I can confirm that there are two flying right now,” Lyons admitted.

You’re not seeing double. There are two blimps right now in the air over the Keys.

How long will the two blimps be flying? “I can’t say for sure.” Extra points for cagey and crafty.

How high can they go? “All the way up … if we would let them,” he chuckled.

By this point, we were both laughing.

I paused for a minute, wracking my brain to think of questions he WOULD answer. He finally told me there are similar blimps along the border with Mexico, one in Puerto Rico and this one in the Keys. The Keys’ aerostat site (that’s what the in-the-know folks call ’em) began operation about 1980 and there are 26 employees. Heedless, I plunged back in with more questions:

Okay, how long is the tether? “The tether length is not available,” he said, voice cracking.

What do you, the employees on Cudjoe, call the blimps? “We call them aerostats, or the balloon, or the bag …”

Why are there two? “I cannot tell you,” he said, politely.

Well, then, are they same size? “They are different sizes,” he confirmed, measuring his words with economy.

What is the purpose of the blimps?

His voice strangled with suppressed laughter, he said, “I am not going to explain to you what we do, but we do it for homeland security.”

Is there room for a person on the blimp? “We don’t fly people. But we do bungee jumping every Saturday from 10,000 feet,” he said, giving up all pretense that this was a serious interview.

And here’s the best part: Honest to goodness confirmation that, yes, one time the Keys blimp did get away. “It got loose and settled down over water.

Three fishermen tied the tether off to the boat. But when the sun came up and superheated the helium, the blimp pulled the boat out of the water and started drifting off …”

A

n 18-year veteran of the Key West music scene, Alfonse Subarsky grew up on the Jersey shore in Belmar at 17th Avenue and B Street (just a few blocks from E Street of Bruce Springsteen fame). At around age 12, Subarsky recalls, he saw Ricky Nelson play guitar on the “Ozzie and Harriett” show and was mesmerized. It changed his life and that’s when he started teaching himself how to play guitar. His earliest musical influence was Surf Music and songs by the Ventures like “Walk Don’t Run” and “Wipeout.”

At age 17 Subarsky joined a band, and being the youngest member and still a minor, recalls having to

get himself an underage license. He went on to play with a popular New Jersey show band called “Party Dolls” that played all around the area.

His first gig in Key West was in 1999 at Top of La Concha, which at the time was a Holiday Inn. From there Subarsky started playing all over town at spots like Captain Tony’s and Rick’s. For a while he played in a popular duo with Clint Bullard, who is from Texas, and given Subarsky’s Jewish heritage, the duo was aptly named the “Lone Star of David.”

You can hear Subarsky as a featured solo performer at Rick’s on Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m.; Two Friends on Tuesdays from noon to 3 p.m., happy hour Fridays from 4 to 7, and Sunday mornings from 8:30 -11:30; and the Pier House Beach Bar on Saturdays at noon. His first CD, “Almost Live From Havana,” can be heard on SoundCloud.com. It has three originals and seven covers. He covers everyone from Buffett to Sinatra to Bruce and thinks that another CD is in his future.

Subarsky has kept very busy in Key West - as he likes to say, he woke up in 2016 and 18 years went by and he’s still here along with his dog Bailey. His advice to younger players is to be prepared for any “mandatory unemployment” and to “always concentrate on saving money so if a storm comes you don’t have to panic”.

“L

a Te Da is really known for our martinis,” said bartender ZZ while shaking up some of her favorite specialties. She’s been working at La Te Da for the past two and a half years and has been in Key West for 13.

One of the most popular martinis is the triple shot espresso martini. Other than pouring expensive glasses of wine for her customers, ZZ said the espresso martini is her second favorite thing to offer her guests.

“I’ve met a lot of really interesting people working here,” she said. “There are a lot of characters who come through this bar. I have made a lot of friendships, and always have a good laugh with my regulars.”

She said on top of the refreshing martinis, the menu makes her job easy. “The food is so good here, it’s easy to sell,” she said.

When she isn’t bartending, she’s enjoying the simple pleasures of living in Key West.

Reading, napping, beach, boat, happy hour with friends, and walking her dogs at White Street Pier are some of her favorite things to do. “I’m very blessed to call this island home,” she said.

Local Rotarian helps the Mosquitero Project HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

M

osquitos are a worldwide problem and some nations do not have the means or the science to fight them effectively like the Keys.

Thanks to the Rotary Club’s Mosquitero Project, volunteers are going global with a uniquely designed net to help stave off the devastating effects such as malaria. This week, local Rotarian Rachel Oropeza, past Key West Rotary Club president, will be traveling to Iquitos, Peru to deliver 1,000 nets to local villages.

This will be her third trip on such a mission.

“I will be traveling with Rotarians from the Key Biscayne and several other Miami Clubs. We partner with our Rotarians, Rotoractors and students from the University de Amazone in Iquitos to deliver the treated nets. The plan is to visit five or six villages in and around Iquitos at the basin of the Amazon,” said Oropeza, “We wear lots of repellent, sweat like hell, come away full of mud but sleep really good at night knowing what we have done.”

The nets are specially treated with Deltamethrin, a Pyrethroid ester insecticide, the man-made version of insecticide derived from chrysanthemum flowers. The long lasting insecticide nets are WHO approved and not harmful to humans. Since the anopheles darlingi mosquito only

bites at night, the nets are used over beds and hammocks to protect people while sleeping. They kill mosquitos as well as other parasites that can transmit chagas disease. Since there is no effective vaccine for malaria, the net becomes an imperative protection from the mosquito itself. (Note: Mosquitos that transmit dengue and Zika bite during the day, so bed netting would not be effective in the Keys.)

“When everyone uses this kind of net in a village,” said Rotarian and coordinator Steve Baker, Key Biscayne, “there is a mass killing effect – 90 percent of the mosquitos die – and it contributes to 80 percent success rates in towns.”

The volunteers will go from village to village distributing the $10 nets, unwrapping them so they cannot be stolen or resold, and showing the villagers how to use them. A net properly cared for can last three to four years.

Seven thousand nets have gone to Venezuela and another 7,000 to Peru , with an additional 7,000 for Peru in the future.

Like a true Rotarian, Oropeza’s suitcases will be laden with donated school supplies for the Peruvian children. “The look on a child’s face when you hand them something of their own is truly rewarding!”

t’s not quite like the pet rock craze, it’s a little different, but it’s sweeping the nation and the Florida Keys too. Painted rocks with inspirational messages are being hidden throughout the country as well as Key West, and everyone is catching on. People who happen to come upon them post a picture on Facebook and return the act by either re-hiding or putting more colorful rocks out into the universe. It’s a simple treasure hunt and bizarrely satisfying and uplifting when one is found.

Just ask Kristin Collie, who works at the Department of Motor Vehicles by day and is an avid rock painter/hider at night. While vacationing in North Florida, Collie learned her sister was a part of a rock group in Volusia County.

Intrigued and gifted with painting crafts, Collie liked the idea of starting her own “Rocks In the Keys” Facebook Page, now 168 members strong. (At the time Collie did not know there was a page called Key West Rocks with 1,100 members.)

“I love the idea of creating something that brightens someone’s day. I create them and hide them at parks and outside stores, places I know kids are going because I like the idea of them finding them, “ said Collie “To me it’s not about being recognized, although it is nice. I love the idea that I made someone smile, even if I don’t know about it.”

Who doesn’t want to look down and see a sign, a motivational boost, to make the day a little better? It started with the website Kindness Arts Project as a grassroots movement. Freelance writer and beachcomber Megan Murphy began leaving the rocks on Cape Cod beaches, saying “Many people,

including myself, are feeling a sense of overwhelming unease and restlessness due to the current events taking place in our world today, and I believe that our united strength can be cultivated through simple random acts of kindness.” It’s the simplest of notions: put something nice out into the universe and make someone happy. The site also gives advice how to choose and paint rocks, inspirational stories and a very comprehensive map of rocks around the world.

And thousands of people are doing it. From pictures of Disney characters,Collie’s specialty, or sayings like, “Do Amazing Things!

Rock it,” these rocks are surprisingly everywhere; just take a second to look around and one just might be there. As Collie says, “It’s a nice feeling that the tourists will have something that they found here to take back with them.”

eople of all ages with a taste for engineering took up the challenge to keep a Key lime pie safe during a freefall in Key West. The challenge on July 1 was part of the Key Lime Festival; competitors tried to create a device or container to protect a Key lime pie, deliver it to a targeted area at ground level – from the deck of the Key West Lighthouse, 86 feet above ground – and keep it from exploding on impact. he littlest theater in Key West is delightfully not daunted by a big production. Hard to imagine taking on the literary giant “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey on such a small stage, but Bob Bowersox and his TheatreXP have done it with aplomb and zeal.

Director Patrick New has made Summer Stage at The Red Barn Theatre entertainingly dramatic.

While the play itself is a relic from America’s past, the themes and theatrical standards still resonate today.

Randle P. McMurphy, a character made infamous by Jack Nicholson on screen and Kirk Douglas on Broadway, is played by a heartfelt and fervent Ross Pipkin, who takes us back to 1963 where racism, homophobia, and governmental oppression were omnipresent.

Society was a constant judge and jury for the predisposed and Kesey takes us on the emotional journey of the willful and the sufferers. Enter a mental institution in Oregon, where humor and shock treatment coincide. McMurphy’s counterpart is Nurse Ratched (or Nurse Rat shit as McMurphy taunts) played by a convincing and steely Melody Moore. No other character in American literature chills or demonizes the medical profession more than Nurse Ratched, who deliberately abuses her power and patients.

Moore’s performance is icy and excruciatingly on target.

“This ward is society in miniature,” said Dr. Spivey, played by Tony Konrath, who sums up the supporting cast perfectly. There’s poor, young stuttering Billy played by Billy White, who steals many scenes. Capturing the audience’s heart is iconic Chief Bromden played by Karl Stahl. And the comic relief certainly deserves mention with John McDonald as Cheswick, Mathias Maloff as Aide Turkle and Jeremy Hyatt as Martini.

“This world belongs to the strong,” said Dale Harding, played

he words exchanged between two Pulitzer-winning poets are the stars of the latest Summer Stage production.

“Dear Elizabeth,” to be presented this month at the Red Barn Theatre in Key West, is the story of poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. Their friendship spanned 30 years and their letters, on which the play is based, reveal the professional conflicts and personal intimacies that compelled them toward, and away from, each other. Both poets were Pulitzer Prize winners and very well known in their time. Both struggled with personal addictions – Bishop was an alcoholic and Lowell would probably be diagnosed as bipolar today.

They each regarded their friendship as the key element to sustaining them as they navigated very troubled lives.

“Dear Elizabeth,” is written by award-winning playwright Sara Ruhl.

The production features Key West theater newcomers Andrew D. Cannady

and Paula Cabot. Both were active in theater earlier in their lives, and are delighted to be back on the stage. Tomlinson is once again incorporating live music into the performance, this time featuring local cellist Denise Nathanson.

Rebecca Tomlinson, Fringe’s artistic director, is directing “Dear Elizabeth.”

“I was first drawn to the idea of the script because Elizabeth Bishop once lived in Key West,” said Tomlinson. “And I love presenting letters of well-known writers.” Tomlinson has written and directed several evenings of Tennessee Williams letters for the Tennessee Williams in Key West Birthday Celebration.

TheatreXP has expanded its seventh season of Summer Stage to include the works of other Key West theater companies, a long-held vision for collaboration among local theaters, in an effort to build the reach of the theater arts in Key West. This Festival of Stage Arts, as this year’s Key West Summer Stage is subtitled, includes The Studios of Key West, the Key West Theater, and Fringe Theatre Key West.

his past growing season, Tom Bordovsky and Donna Naylor grew enough tomatoes in their backyard hydroponic garden to feed their whole street. With seven different varieties of plants towering over their heads in 27 repurposed kitty litter buckets, every three days they were bringing in more tomatoes than they could ever eat on their own.

Bordovsky and Naylor retired to Big Pine Key a few years ago after owning a successful garden shop in Fort Lauderdale. “We used to water garden, but we wanted to try true hydroponics when I came across Aaron’s shop,” said Bordovsky. “I think I was his second customer.”

Aaron Patterson opened Keys Organic and Hydroponic Supply three years ago, looking for healthier options to change his eating habits. “The one thing I can control is what I put into my body,” he said.

He stocks everything needed to start and maintain organic and hydroponic gardens, with more than 100 Keys residents using his systems. Keys Organic and Hydroponic Supply carries a full line of indoor and outdoor gardening supplies for year-round gardening. Two areas in his shop are dedicated to showcasing the water systems.

In the front room, a pond is set up with plants and fish with the cycle: feed fish, fish waste is eaten by microbes, microbe waste feeds the plants, plants clean the water – water that Patterson hasn’t had to change in three years – and then the cycle starts over.

In the back room, the hydroponic system is in full glory. “I never have to do anything in here but harvest the vegetables,” he said. The entire drip to drain system and lighting runs on timers. Small systems start around $200 and costs after that are low.

“It’s perfect world gardening, and it’s particularly important during water shortages.”

The nutrient to film technique, which is especially good for seedlings, veggies and herbs, starts around $35 to begin. Bordovsky and Naylor use this system for their lettuce crop, while they look forward to next season’s tomatoes, which they start from heirloom seeds.

“We had the best season this year and we are just getting warmed up,” said Bordovsky. “It’s because of the support and great information we received from Aaron.”

Underneath my mom and dad’s fish tank in their living room lives a picnic basket. Not just any picnic basket filled with plates and forks and napkins, but a picnic basket filled with every single crazy memory I had as a child. My dad claims it contains “thousands” of dollars of his hard earned money. There’s many pictures of our boat trips to Dry Tortugas, Bimini, the Barrys, and Cay Sal on my dad’s old 24-foot boat. Other moments didn’t make it to film. Sometimes the best memories aren’t captured on film, or cameras, or iPhones.

W

hen I was young, we would fish EVERY weekend at the Humps. I dreaded the seasickness, the boredom. To beat the doldrums of summer, my dad would tell my brother and me that whoever spotted the first thing on the water — a board, a bird, a bale, a Cuban chug — would receive a dollar.

Chase and I would sit in the front of the boat passing time, pretending to shoot flying fish with our make-believe finger pistols — pew! pew! pew!— joking about riding bulls while hanging onto the bowline. Cowboys of the sea we were. Some flying fish would go down fast to our make-believe shots; some we would miss for minutes on end.

We were about to head in late in the afternoon when in the distance I saw something. I contemplated not saying anything.

I wanted dry land, but I wanted mahi for dinner more. My keen 10-year-old eyes spotted a bird sitting on a pallet. Chase, 8, was jealous of my find as he sipped on a Motts apple juice box and ate the last bologna sandwich from the cooler.

My dad circled the pallet a few times with no hits. Skunked.

Morale was low and gas was questionable as he started heading for home when it happened. Zing, the rod screamed from the back of the boat as my mom started reeling.

Zing, another rod took off as my dad grabbed it. Chase and I kept the boat straight.

Forty-five adrenaline-filled minutes later a bull dolphin sat in our cooler. The cooler was unable to shut because its tail stuck out one end. Another smaller dolphin, a 35 pounder, lay proudly on top of him as we headed for home. Of course, my mom always lucked out with the bigger catch (ask her about her wahoo story...).

Coming off plane, with Bonefish Towers barely in sight, the boat ran out of gas. As we waited for TowBoat, the ice slowly melted in the propped open cooler.

We waited. And waited longer.

There are only so many things you can “eye spy with my little eye” in the middle of the ocean, when my dad made the decision to fillet the mahi before there was no ice left.

On the back of the boat, on a makeshift cutting board, he sliced into the fish by the low glow of the moon and a flashlight. That’s when it happened.

As he went to move one fillet of the bull dolphin over, the whole rest of the fish slipped off the back of the boat into the darkest night water. Water deep enough our anchor wouldn’t reach if we tried; water filled with scraps of fish he just cut up.

Without hesitation, he threw his wallet out of his back pocket with a couple cuss words and dove over the back of the boat. My mom, screaming, held the flashlight over the side of the boat. A minute later, he came up with half of the bull 45-pound mahi in his hand. Once he climbed in the boat, he thanked God for marrying a woman with enough sense to shine the light over the back of the boat as Chase and I sat in awe gazing at our crazy, amazing, always adventurous Dad. Now I long for those days, the tiny fishing boat I used to hate, the seasickness, the days I thought staying at home watching TV would be more fun than shooting fish with finger guns on the wide open ocean, those Motts apple juice days. And, more so, I will remember the best dollar I ever made, no pictures needed.
