hat will the affordable housing project on 104th Street look like? That’s the question the City of Marathon attempted to answer in a workshop on Tuesday evening. Here’s the rough outline: • Anywhere from 16 to 20 units.

• The homes would probably be duplexes, constructed two stories over parking with 1,300 square feet each.

• The homes would be sold to buyers who qualify in the 60 to 120 percent range of median income in Monroe County. (See sidebar.)

• The city would retain ownership of the lot in the land trust model.

• Deed restrictions would last 99 years.

The workshop, which lasted about two hours, incorporated ideas from citizens in the audience and also the opinions of Marathon City Council and members of the affordable housing task force with expertise ranging from development to banking to business.

• NUMBER OF UNITS The city bought the property in 2007 for $767,000 and added $200,000 worth of improvements (like roads, etc.). The city has since constructed a 10,000 square foot utility building on the lot, leaving about half or 1.35 acres left for affordable housing. Although the density allows for up to 30 affordable units, the council agreed to explore lower numbers, as well.

Pete Chapman, a neighbor of the proposed project, objected to the higher density.

“I can’t imagine how you are going to fit more than 10 units on that land,” he said, “and still preserve neighborhood character.”

• INCOME LEVELS The group also talked about what level of earners to target for the project. Habitat for Humanity, according to Executive Director Chris Todd Young, typically targets those earning between 60 and 80 percent of the median income. (Single person income of $38,587 to $51,450; four-person family of $55,125 to $73,500.)

City staff had recommended targeting earners at 80 percent to 100 percent of the median income. In the end, the council decided to widen the measure to those making 60 percent to 120 percent of the median income in Monroe County.

“The applicants we want are firemen, teachers, nurses, and single women who work, for example, at the city,” said Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron.

• OWNERSHIP VS. RENTING The council was near unanimous about its decision to seek applicants who want to become homeowners, rather than rent. Home ownership is attractive because it removes the necessity of having the city manage a rental property, or hiring it done. It also promotes community stability and aesthetics. Finally, it might also mean homes hold their value better when not a part of a mixed project that includes renters.

“I was dead set against home ownership, but I have come around to it. But I am not discounting rentals entirely. Not everybody wants to own a home, but everybody wants affordable housing.”

Rental properties might be more attractive to developers because they offer a positive cash flow every month.

• WHAT NEXT? The City of Marathon has done much to promote affordable housing within city limits, perhaps more so than any other Keys municipality. However, in the past, the city has been able only to approve projects brought before it, with no controls on what type of affordable housing is constructed — whether it’s geared towards those making “middle income” or 160 percent of the median income at $102,900 for a single person, or whether it’s housing for citizens in the extremely low bracket earning $19,300 for a single person.

With the city-owned piece of property, it’s a chance to address perceived gaps in the market not filled by Tarpon Harbor development on the high end, or the complex on 73rd Street which serves lower-income households.

The council directed staff to write an RFP (Request for Proposal) with the broadest strokes.

“Let’s see what the builders come back with,” said Mayor Dan Zieg.

With the cityowned piece of property, it’s a chance to address perceived gaps in the affordable housing market.

Refuges go off the beaten path

ummer evenings are perfect for adventures and the National Key Deer Refuge offers several free family friendly guided nature tours through the backwoods of Big Pine Key. Last week, the tour included a leisurely five-mile biking adventure through the back roads and fire roads of the nature preserve.

Upcoming events include a 1.5mile walking tour from Blue Hole to Big Hole on Wednesday, July 5 and a No Name Key foot trail on Wednesday, July 12, meeting beforehand at 6:30 p.m. at the visitor center in the Big Pine Key Winn Dixie shopping plaza.

County School Board moves ahead with other plans for Marathon Manor property

n July 11, the Marathon City Council will hear from staff about pool options. While officials won’t divulge the specifics of their findings until then, they did say they would be presenting details on areas that might need a pool, addressed the different needs of segments of the community, and also researched operational costs for a pool.

“We looked at three pools — Founders Park in Islamorada, Jacobs Aquatic in Key Largo and the Sea Base Boy Scout camp on Lower Matecumbe,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

City staff toured the three facilities to ask about profitability and admission fees and examine the pools’ infrastructure such as pump equipment.

They also mapped all the city’s existing pools — both private and those belonging to hotels — to see where pools are needed. (It’s unclear whether the city determined if the resort pools are open to the public.) And it identified the three groups who would make use of the pool: swim teams, recreational users including users who take swim classes or swim aerobics, and commercial users such as scuba instructors. In August 2016, Marathon voters narrowly passed a non-binding referendum in favor of a pool.

“We will present the research to the council, and move forward with its direction,” said Lindsey.

The City of Marathon sent a letter on June 14 to the Monroe County School Board asking it to build a pool on the Marathon Manor property.

Monroe County School District Superintendent Mark Porter spoke about it to the board on Tuesday.

“We have an ongoing conversation with the city of Marathon about Marathon Manor, most recently about the possible interest in a possible pool kind of facility,” said Porter, earlier in the day. “But we were clear that our contribution to the partnership would be the land. To be honest, we hadn’t heard much about swimming pool alternatives for several months.”

Monroe County School Board Commissioner Mindy Conn repeated Porter’s remarks. “We are not in the pool business,” she said. “Our priority is to make the improvements needed at Marathon High School. With what-

ever land is left over, we are open to entering into a discussion with the City of Marathon.”

The Marathon Manor property is owned by the school district, and sits adjacent to the Marathon High School.

The school district has hired a design firm to come up with some ideas for using the space, from a track to additional parking, but the entire scope of the project includes raising that portion of the lot to minimize flooding after heavy rains. In May, Pat Lefere said if a full size track is built, there wouldn’t be much vacant land left. Lefere is the executive director of operations and planning for the school district.

“If you asked Marathon High School what their number one priority is, they would definitely say parking,” said Porter.

Marathon High School Principal Wendy McPherson said the school needs at least 50 more parking spots.

“This year we had 15 students who parked on the dirt lot (on Marathon Manor property) and another 10 on a waiting list,” she said, adding that several others parked without permission in the parking lot on the other side of the school or across the street at friends’ houses. Not every student is eligible for a parking space due to class rank or standing. The other parking spots would be for teachers and visitors.

Porter said the building on the Marathon Manor property — formerly an assisted living facility — continues to deteriorate as it has sat empty for 12 years. The property comes with about 50 building rights specific to its former use. In the past, the state Department of Economic Opportunity has said those rights can be converted into affordable housing permits, but not market rate housing.

“Conversations are taking place in an accelerated manner,” Porter said. “But we need to consider what’s realistically possible not only in regard to the city and community, but also in terms of the structure and rights that could be incorporated.”

Head of TDC steps down after 20 years

arold Wheeler knew it was time to retire, but he will be the first to admit it wasn’t an easy decision. At 70, the seasoned marketing director commands an annual budget of more than $55 million, while framing the blueprint of the Florida Keys tourism boom after taking the helm of Monroe County’s Tourism Development Council in April 1996.

And while he is adamant that recent measures by county commissioners, which limited the TDCs marketing dollars, were not the catalyst for his planned September exit, it is evident that Wheeler is concerned about the Florida Keys shifting away from a tourism climate he authored.

In his White Street office, a tourism poster hangs above Wheeler’s desk that reads, “Just Let Go.” Yet another photo depicts the great Muhammad Ali in a bout with South American Oscar Bonavena (Wheeler is an avid boxing fan).

And to some extent, this has been the ironic tug-a-war of Wheeler’s existence for the past two years. To let go, and spend time at his North Carolina cabin and watch his son, Clayton, grow up. Or to continue fighting for a fitting end to a legacy.

Recently, Wheeler, who is typically reserved and humble, granted a rare interview to the Keys Weekly, explaining why it was time to hang up his gloves and retire on top.

Why retire now? It’s a tough choice. A real tough choice. It took me two years to decide. I just turned 70 in April. I hate to say it, but that had something to do with it. But I would say the biggest reason is to spend more time with my son.

Yes, but a lot has changed since you took over in 1996. What was it like when you first walked into this office? By 1997 we were working on and approving the first comprehensive marketing plan. Before, there were just pieces of paper with trade shows, PR and advertising notes for media placement. It wasn’t organized and barely a dozen pages. Today, it’s hundreds of pages and recognized in our industry. I’m very proud of that.

You are humble almost to a fault. Can you accept being the author of Florida Keys tourism as we know it today? No, my dad taught me a long time ago there’s nothing you can’t accomplish when you give others the credit. And what I mean by that, is they (TDC staff, DAC boards, Tinsley Advertising, Newman PR and Two Oceans Digital) deserve the credit. You just can’t take all the credit when you have a team like this doing great work.

So what do you think your legacy will be at the TDC? I really don’t know what my legacy will be. I know when I came in we had a budget right at $10 million and our budget for 2018 is going to be about $58 million. Much of that changed when we were able to approve the fourth promotional penny tax in 2009, which boosted our revenue by 25 percent. It’s quite something really.

But recent measures by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners have seemingly reduced advertising dollars. Do you ever feel like you are being punished for doing your job well? As for current issues and some of the negative things that have been coming up lately with cutting advertising dollars, you know, we’ve been working on that and dealing with those issues for a long time. You go through those dips every once in a while. And I understand it. But I’m disappointed. We are going to follow whatever the board of county commissioners sets as policy because they are the governing body.

So what was all the fuss about? The board didn’t like this last issue of going to more capital just for the single point of doing less advertising.

And that’s what it’s about. It was the cities and municipalities saying they wanted equality with the county-- to get 100 percent on capital projects. And you know, it sounded like a civil rights action. “We want equality and the same as the county.” But that wasn’t it. It was a money grab by the municipalities. Period. End of sentence.

So why did the county go along with it?

While hosting Wednesday night trivia at Marathon Ale House, Jeanine Christiansen said tanning beds were the worst. “One time I accidently left the tag out on my suit,” she said.

“And, then I had to walk around for weeks with a weird square on my back.”

Jessie moved to the Keys about a year and a half ago and learned really quick to put on the SPF. “I was out snorkeling at the reef for the first time and my whole back got torched,” she said. “I had to lay on my stomach for days.”

“I don’t get sunburned,” said Ale House bartender Cody B. “I know better.”

“I was out fishing every day and didn’t think I needed sunscreen,” said Lauren Bohnen, the tatted-up bartender from Havana Jack’s. “I feel like my black tattoos absorbed the sun even more and it was really bad.

Beat the heat with the fire department Monroe County Fire Rescue is hosting a series of “Beat the heat” events for children this summer. Firefighters will provide a gentle stream of misting water for kids of all ages to enjoy. Children are encouraged to wear bathing suits and tennis shoes or sneakers. They also should bring towels.

n June 24, four Marathon families moved into new Habitat for Humanity homes on 73rd Street. Over the years, Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys has served 32 families — either with new homes, rehabilitated homes or “recycled” homes that had new families move into affordable housing. The entire board was present for the dedication and blessing including President Jill Bell, Vice President Blair Shiver, Treasurer Lupe Marzoa, Secretary Linda Mixon and directors Tammy Collins, Christina Gonzales, Matt Lessard, Mike Puto and Fire Chief John Johnson, as well as dignitaries from the City of Marathon and Chamber of Commerce. What’s next for Habitat? “In January, it starts building another duplex,” said Executive Director Chris Todd Young.

Maybe it’s no wonder that the winning anglers in the 2017 Gold Cup tarpon tournament were all past grand champions.

Anglers were able to pull in only 31 fish during the five-day stretch – 10 release and 21 weight fish.

Anglers and guides compete for various trophy items but the real honor is having their names added to the perpetual trophy which is showcased at Florida Keys Outfitters in Islamorada.

Among the results from the 54th edition of the tournament: Thane Morgan, from Amarillo, Texas, won the grand championship for the third time, with a total of 2,665 points. Morgan got a great start the first day of the tournament by catching two weight fish that weighed about 78 and 87.4 pounds.

On day 4 he brought a big fish in weighing about 101.1 pounds. Morgan’s guide, Capt. Dustin Huff, again proved the family talent of guiding his angler to the grand championship for the second time since 2014. (Huff’s father, Capt. Steve Huff, won the grand championship three times in the ’80s. Morgan also helped put another father/son

name on the perpetual trophy in 2010 by winning the grand championship with guide Craig Brewer, whose father Jim won in 1974.)

Morgan and Huff also won High Point Day 1 with their two weight fish out of the five caught that first day.

First runner-up Julian Robertson, from New York City, and his guide, Capt. Joe Rodriguez, earned 2,556 points. They had the second largest weight fish, weighing about 130.9 pounds, one weighing about 94.7 pounds, and a release fish.

The two were grand champions last year and finished 109 points or 10.9 pounds behind Morgan and Huff.

Second runner-up Steve Ward, from Coppell, Texas and his guide, Capt. Doug Kilpatrick, weren’t far behind, with a total of 2,332 points from two weight fish and a release fish. Steve Ward also has his name on the perpetual trophy as the 2012 grand champion.

Mark Richens, from Islamorada, and Capt. Jared Raskob caught the largest tarpon, measuring about 135.3 pounds. They were grand champions in 2015.

hopping for a home? Before you begin your search, it’s important to figure out what you can comfortably afford.

“The interesting thing about homebuying is that it isn’t a one-size-fits-all process,” says Mike Dawson, vice president of single-family at Freddie Mac. “Doing your homework to figure out what those needs are is the critical first step.”

Free online resources, such as Freddie Mac’s “How Much You Can Afford” calculator, found at calculators. freddiemac.com, can help you get a handle on this figure during the preliminary stages of your search.

You may also consider speaking to a lender at this stage. If you qualify for a loan, he or she will provide you with a pre-approval letter stating how much home you can afford and the maximum amount you are qualified to borrow. Having this letter can help show the seller that you are a committed and qualified buyer. Keep in mind that the amount your lender is willing to lend is not always how much you should borrow.

When determining your budget, consider the length of your loan and the type of loan you want. Do you want to pay back the money that you borrow over 15 years or 30 years? The longer your loan term, the smaller your monthly payments, but you’ll pay more interest over time.

The type of mortgage loan is important, too. With a fixed-rate loan, the interest rate stays the same through the life of the loan. Such loans tend to have higher interest rates because the lender isn’t protected against a rise in its costs over the course of the loan.

On an adjustable-rate mortgage, however, the interest rate may re-set every one, three or five years. Homebuyers may have low interest rates when they first take out their mortgage loans, but the rates may increase over the loan term.

3. State Park Fees HB185 provides discounts on state park fees for specified foster and adoptive families.

Families operating a licensed foster home can receive an annual pass for free, and families who adopt a special needs child (as defined by the Department of Children and Families) shall receive a one-time family annual entrance pass at no charge at the time of the adoption.

‘Stand your ground’ changes, tax cuts and more Laws don’t always go into effect on July 1, but most do. That’s because the state’s fiscal year begins on the same day. Laws sometimes take effect on Oct. 1 or Jan. 1.

Or, in some cases, as soon as the governor signs the bill. “The bill will always specify when it will become law,” said Robert Reyes, one of Monroe County’s lobbyists of long standing. Earlier this month, Reyes was presented with a 20-year plaque for his service to the Keys. In the past, he’s worked on the passage of the Florida Keys Stewardship Act and the funding of the Mayfield Grant. Following is a list of notable new laws for the state of Florida.

The General Appropriations Act SB 2500 marks the beginning of Florida’s fiscal year, from July 1 to June 30, with an $82.4 billion budget.

2. Transportation Network Companies — or Ridesharing H221 preempts any local government from stopping or regulating rideshare companies such as Uber or Lyft from operating in Florida. Operators and drivers will have to follow statewide requirements for insurance and background checks.

4. Law Enforcement Body Cameras HB 305 revises Florida laws pertaining to officers submitting body cam footage. This law now allows police officers to review body cam footage before filing a written report or making a statement.

5. Religious expression in public schools SB 436 secures the rights of students to display or express their religious beliefs in Florida public school. In public forums, the school may not discriminate against religious expression but has the right to restrict the students’ expression based on a “limited model” derived by neutral criteria.

6. Criminal history records SB 118 allows a charged, but non-convicted, person to request that his mugshot be removed from a website. The company will be required to do so within 10 days or face a daily $1,000 fine. It’s unclear whether this state law pertains to media organizations. The company publishing the mugshot cannot charge for removal of the picture.

9. Justifiable use of force SB 1052 redefines “Stand Your Ground” and removes the requirement that a person be physically attacked in his dwelling, residence or vehicle first before threatening or using force as selfdefense in Florida. Defendants do not have to present evidence or take the stand to argue a “Stand your Ground” defense in order to receive immunity.

Prosecutors now have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the use of force was not justified.

10. Taxation HB7109 is an effort to provide Floridians millions in tax cuts. There will be a decrease in taxes on commercial leases, helping small businesses, and discounts in property taxes for lowincome housing. Also included are the sales tax holidays for buying back-toschool and hurricane supplies. It also marks the end of taxing feminine hygiene products.

Monroe County and the Monroe County School District passed a “local” bill this year that had other communities in Florida sit up and take notice. The Monroe County Telecommunications Bill (HB 1295) allows the County to hold public meetings, hearings, and workshops electronically as long as no final action is taken at the meeting. Both agencies rotate holding meetings in Key West and Marathon and Key Largo for the convenience of their constituents. It’s not always easy.

The bill was the brainchild of Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

“I often attend the county’s Climate Change Advisory Committee. If it’s held in Marathon, then participants from Key Largo and Key West have to drive there. It just seems sort of ironic that at these very meetings we are talking about ways to minimize our carbon footprint, and yet we’re making everyone drive 100 miles to come to a meeting.”

The electronic meetings won’t start until Monroe County develops an ordinance on how to implement the law.

Meeting places must be established, as well as decisions on the type of technology and manner of interface.

7. Certificates of Non-Viable Birth or Grieving Families Act H101. This will allow the state to issue birth certificates to women whose pregnancies end after nine weeks and before 20 weeks of gestation. Florida would be the first state to issue birth certificates for miscarriages.

8.Renewable energy source devices SB 90 is a publicly approved constitutional amendment that allows people and businesses to install solar panels without affecting their property taxes based on increase in property value due to installation of devices.

“While the bill was being presented in Tallahassee, there was some interest from other communities about pursuing this type of opportunity,” said Robert Reyes, a state lobbyist for Monroe County. “It might be even more pertinent for counties like Miami-Dade. It’s probably more difficult to drive from end to end of that county than from Key Largo to Key West.”

11.Vessels HB 7043 allows the rest of the state to copy Monroe County’s pilot projects like the mooring field in Boot Key Harbor. The law calls for uniform standards of anchoring and mooring statewide, sets rules for anchoring outside managed areas, allows local governments to require proof of pump out after 10 days and provides methods to deal with derelict vessels.

The bill took three years to pass. Initially it was written as a local law, or site specific. State leaders rejected it and asked for the bill to be written as a general law that would apply to all of Florida. Again, it was rejected and rewritten as a local law before it passed.

ike a lot of people who end up in the Keys, Alma bartender Dylan’s story isn’t much different. “I was looking for an adventure and saw a job listing online and just moved here,” he said while shaking and pouring a Duck Key Cosmo at the chic, intimate Hawks Cay Resort bar.

The cosmo is made with pineapple infused New Amsterdam Coconut Vodka, Cointreau liqueur, fresh-squeezed lime juice and cranberry juice, then garnished with the vodka pineapples. “It’s definitely our most popular drink,” he said, adding that it pairs well with the surf and turf on the menu.

The surf being a Florida lobster tail, poached, and the turf being a perfectly seared 8-ounce filet mignon.

Dylan said his favorite part about working at Alma is the creativity he can have with the cocktails and the understanding of liquors since he’s been there. “They give us free reign to be creative with this craft of making cocktails,” he said.

When he isn’t bartending, he likes gardening and playing with his German shepherd named Noah.

rust me, kayaking around Key West is much easier than swimming. Swimming around Key West is just plain heroic. This is my second year volunteering as a kayaker for the annual event put on by Bill Welzien and company.

And for the second year in a row, I was teamed with a Costa Rican, due to my (admittedly limited) language skills. Melissa Romero, my swimmer, was a total rock star. She finished 13th in the women’s wave and 19th overall as a female solo swimmer. This is truly an international competitive swim, attracting swimmers from around the country and globe. And she rocked it.

When some friends suggested I was crazy to kayak around Key West, I assured them it was MUCH crazier to swim around it. It took my (good) swimmer five and a half hours. That’s a lot of strokes and it’s definitely pro class. But what makes swimming so challenging, I think, is not the physical exertion but how swimmers are completely alone with their thoughts — no music, no banter.

“How do you feel?” I would ask Melissa when we stopped for our less-than-a-minute water breaks. “Me siento fuerte. Me siento feliz,” she told me, saying she felt strong and happy. And that’s the other thing about endurance racers: they have to be right in their hearts. Bitterness or vengeance is impossible to sustain; endurance races require a positive mindset. I tried to put myself in her goggles, and imagine what she would want to hear and what compliments I knew how to express in Spanish.

“Andas super bien” (You are going very well). “Estoy muy orgullosa” (I am very proud). When we rounded the corner of Dredger’s Key in the backcountry, headed for Cow Key Channel bridge, I told Melissa it would be the hardest part but to be strong.

When we made that milestone I congratulated Melissa and told her how many swimmers she left in her bubbles.

As a kayaker, I took my job seriously. From the moment Melissa entered the water, I never took my eyes or ears off her. It was my job to see her around the course — safe

It was my job to stop her every half hour to hydrate and eat, and trust her when she wanted to keep going. It was my job to be her literal guide — she didn’t do much “sighting” (looking ahead) — but simply swam at my side and I like to think she didn’t have to take many extra strokes. And it was certainly my job not to complain about the knots in my forearms from gripping the paddle.

Melissa had it tougher.

In the real world, Melissa is a professor of mathematics at a Costa Rican university. In her head, though, she’s planning her next endurance swims — a 35-kilometer distance race in Mexico, and dreaming of a long river race in South America that will take her through three countries. In

My swimmer kept telling me she was bringing “bags of water” to hydrate. I assumed she meant a bottle of water inside a bag. No. She tied off the tops of simple sandwich bags after filling them with about a cup and a half of water. She would bite off the tip and squirt it into her mouth. This is, I’ve learned, how the rest of the world deals with “portable” water. Genius.

the real world, I am a writer. In my head, I am the guru of Costa Rican swimmers capable of helping them achieve greater heights. Or, at least, a faithful fan.

A couple of final pro notes for anyone thinking of volunteering for this (and I highly recommend it): Wear sunscreen on the backs of your hands and top of your feet. Don’t plan on doing anything besides paddling for as long as it takes ... oh, and managing your swimmer’s social media. Prepare to be friends with you swimmer for life; you just went through a momentous occasion together.

Finally, the next day in the garden, don’t attempt to pull out a stubborn weed. It will make your left forearm scream with anguish.

A VOICE FOR THE CHILDREN Guardian ad Litem serves those who need it the most

“Y

ou really have the power to change a bad situation for a child,” said Marathon Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron, who has been a part of the Guardian ad Litem program for the past eight years. As a former coordinator, she oversaw 150 cases, and now as a volunteer she interacts with one child or family at a time.

Guardian ad Litem is looking for more volunteer advocates to help with the 250 local children in the program.

Right now, about 60 volunteers are covering the Keys.

Coldiron recounted one of her cases that involved a physically abused 5-year-old. “She could still be in that situation, but now she has a chance at a great life,” she said. “It was fighting for her, and telling the judge that she needs specialized therapy so that she gets every chance to live a normal life.”

In Guardian ad Litem, the volunteer serves as a consistent, trustworthy person in the child’s life and advocates for the child in the court system. Most of the children are in homes where abuse, abandonment and neglect happen due to the adults under the same roof who are grappling with substance and mental health issues, or just don’t know any better. “Abuse comes in many forms,” said Guardian ad Litem’s volunteer recruiter and trainer Anissah Tomas.

Tomas said the volunteer represents the interests and needs of the child after the children have been removed from the situations and placed with family members, or in foster care.

Lynn and Leon Clements moved to the Upper Keys for retirement, and knew this is what they wanted to do with their free time. Lynn has worked with two young families of three and a single child, while Leon has focused his energy on one teenager in the system.

“Each case is different, but the goal

is to make sure the kids can be in an environment that they can thrive in,” said Lynn, who highly recommends this type of volunteer work to anyone. “All you need is a little love in your heart to make a difference in a child’s life.”

Leon focuses on stability for his teenager currently in foster care, and on school and college goals. Lynn chose younger children to work with and places emphasis on turning the cases quickly to either reunite the children with their parents, or get them into a permanent stable environment as soon as possible.

After 40 hours of training in three phases, volunteers can choose the cases they want to work with the support of the Guardian ad Litem team, which includes attorneys, advocate managers, and circuit directors. The volunteers then form bonds with the child, or children (cases often have more than one child per family) through monthly meetings that take place at school, or their homes, and at various other places where the child will be.

“It’s heartbreaking to see a family fall apart, but sometimes it’s the best thing for that child,” said Coldiron. “It’s also heartwarming when we can keep a family together with rehabilitation programs, parenting classes, and therapy, and it’s rewarding to see a family out in the community, whether it’s the biological family, or foster and adopted families.”

Coldiron just attended the middle school graduation of one of the children she advocated for, who is now with her adopted family. “They said I was a part of their family because I helped their family become whole,” she said. “It’s things like this that let us know the more we fight for them, the better they will be.”

Independence Day, Marathon style Fourth of July at Sombrero Beach — a tradition

J

uly 4th has always been one of my favorite holidays. The day’s festivities are what summer is all about: cookouts, fireworks, fun and games … and remembering the reasons, and the principles upon which, this nation was founded.

Once again, I am privileged to work with both my Rotary club and the city of Marathon in helping to organize the day’s festivities. Suffice it to say that Marathon really does Independence Day well. It literally is our community’s party of the year.

Let’s start with the perfect location: Sombrero Beach. What better place than the shore of our tropical sea to celebrate America! Of course, no Fourth of July would be complete without a parade. This year’s parade starts at Marathon High School at 11 a.m. and heads for the beach, and will feature a number of floats and attractions. Our American Legion Post 154 will march and present the colors.

Opening ceremonies will commence at Sombrero Beach at about noon.

The city’s Parks & Recreation Department has organized all sorts of fun and games for kids of all ages. There will be beach volleyball, watermelon eating contests and egg tosses, plus face painting and activities for children of all ages. Come check out the park’s new playground equipment for the little ones!

Thanks to the Rotary Club of Marathon, there will be plenty to eat and drink (burgers, dogs, soda, water, beer, snow cones, etc.). Proceeds from food and beverage sales will go to the charitable work of the Rotary club for scholarships and more! Please come hungry and thirsty — there’s no need to bring your own food and drink. The prices are more than reasonable, and you can lend a true helping hand as you eat and drink on the Fourth.

Probably the best part about our celebration is the location — a tropical beach park! Coconut palms swaying in the breeze, sunny skies and sandy shores – it’s what the “saltlife” is really all about. And admission is absolutely free! With the beach right there, a cool refreshing dip in the Atlantic is but a few steps away!

Live music will echo throughout the beach beginning with the Island Harmony singers performing patriotic songs to start us off. Dan Sullivan’s music will energize the stage, as will

solo contributions from yours truly.

Then, Jade Storm (Adrienne Z, Glenn Faast, Rob Garza, and Steven Miller) will rock out all afternoon until the evening’s fireworks JOHN sky concert.

Every year performs around gets better and town at various better, and people establishments. who see them for the first time are amazed at how a town our size is able to put on such a fabulous display.

The great news is that chief pyrotechnician Randy Mearns has another great show lined up this year. The Fourth of July sky concert will begin just after sunset, with fireworks timed to light up the sky in synchronization with a special patriotic musical program that will be heard across the beach. Each year, there is a special tribute to our veterans and active duty military personnel, and each year, it just gets better and better. Whether you watch from on the beach, or from a boat anchored just offshore (as so many boaters do), you’re in for a heck of a show. The city of Marathon and the Marathon Fire Department step up to the plate year after year to make sure that our fireworks are second to none.

I’m sure that there are more than a few people from Rotary and the city who feel the same way. I can’t imagine a better way for a community to get together and celebrate our nation’s birthday. If you want to have one of the best Fourth of July experiences anywhere, then I’ll see you this Tuesday (July 4!) on Sombrero Beach!

Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS) a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence has the following open positions:

Domestic Violence Primary Prevention/Outreach Advocate (Full Time)

This is a non-degreed position. The purpose of the primary prevention program is to deliver prevention education and awareness to the targeted youth population by delivering a series of educational classes in the class room as well as at community events while creating a coordinated community to respond to intimate partner violence in an effort to reduce, better respond to and eliminate it. Additional responsibilities include Direct Service provision to domestic violence survivors in Outreach locations. The work schedule is primarily M-F 8-5 with some weekends and evenings, but candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups and possess excellent organizational skills. Those who identify as survivors of violence or abuse are encouraged to apply.

The Domestic Abuse shelter has an opening for FT and PT Advocates. Advocates provide coverage of a 24-hour shelter and hotline, advocacy in criminal and civil justice systems, and safety planning with survivors of domestic violence.
