“I’d like to go volcano boarding in Nicaragua. My dad is from there and I’ve always heard of it, but have never gotten to do it. Leon, where Cerro Negro is located, is far away from Managua, the city,” said Nilya Cortez.

A twist of fate, lots of hope, and the Village’s helping hand helped Rebekah Susa finally own her Tavernier dream home.

hen Rebekah Susa migrated in 1999 to the Keys, where she teaches at Coral Shores High School, she never imagined she could own a home along the chain of islands.

“I thought I would be renting forever,” she said.

Thanks to a village of Islamorada program that helped with $10,000 in down-payment costs, she is now a homeowner.

“The house found me,” she said “It was in June 2015 that I heard about the program after I attended a village council meeting. I went to the meeting to speak about homes I could afford in the village. After working with a Realtor for two years to buy a house, they kept telling me to temper my expectations,” said Susa. “But everything I found in those two years was going to require so many improvements that I simply couldn’t afford to fix.”

After the council meeting, Susa was approached by a prospective seller. But the time wasn’t right, and the seller backed out. Convinced that the quaint Tavernier home she saw was bound to be hers, Susa placed a photo of the property on a vision board.

Aside from hope, there were still steps Susa says she needed to take.

“To get the ball rolling, the first step I took was to speak with a mortgage lender, and find out what mortgage payments would look like in $10,000 increments. I did that up to $300,000. And got pre-qualified. Then you need to find a house,” said Susa.

determined she could roughly afford to finance a home of $250,000. (She paid $239,500 for her current home.)

Finally, a year later, Susa’s vision came true, and the owner told her that she was now ready to sell her home.

Susa said ok, but didn’t exactly know how to afford it.

She had a little bit of money saved up, roughly $6,000, but with the required down-payment, plus closing costs, she was still short. Roughly $10,000 short.

So she contacted the village planning department and began completing all the qualification requirements.

Susa said the process is tedious, with many documents and appointments needed to accomplish before the closing period. She recommends setting a closing date 45 days out.

“You have to deed-restrict the home for 10 years. Every year you own the home, $1,000 is taken off the $10,000 loan. After 10 years, you don’t owe anything. It’s the only program in Islamorada that the deed restrictions are not in perpetuity for affordable housing units,” she said. “Go in and meet with the planner and they will tell you what you need to do.”

Though Susa wasn’t 100 percent sure she had the funds to close on the house, on the day of closing, the down payment assistance of $10,000 transferred from the village to the seller and covered the amount she needed.

“It’s another one of the village’s strategies to encourage and assist with affordable housing, and getting income-qualified tenants into workforce housing in the Village,” says Director of Planning Cheryl Cioffari.

“It’s a possibility for others that don’t think it’s a possibility now,” said Susa of the assistance program.

“Someone like me — it would take 10 years to save up $16,000. It took everything I had to save $6,000 over three years.

n June 19, Michael Shields presented “Key West: Bohemia in the Tropics” as part of the Matecumbe Historical Trust’s monthly presentation.

Islamorada’s Island Community Church welcomed guests to enjoy a showing of the film. The movie told the story of how a community-building experiment during the Great Depression morphed the culture of a small island town and helped create the colorful identity that today is Key West. The movement to turn Key West’s economy into a tourist hub is depicted through the various accounts of locals and historians. Shields discussed the influence of notorious Key West figures like Ernest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffett and the role they had in the formation of Key West counterculture.

BRIEFLY Trolley tours in Islamorada The Matecumbe Historical Trust Presents the “29 Points of Interest” Historical Trolley Tours on the islands of Islamorada on Saturday, June 24 starting at the Islamorada Moose Lodge, 81573 Old Hwy. ROTH JOINS FKEC BOARD

T

he Florida Keys Electric Cooperative board has named Joseph Roth to the District 2, Tavernier board seat, which was vacated by the retirement of Frank Joseph Roth Hawkins.

Roth moved to the Upper Keys as a teenager 35 years ago. He is a graduate of Coral Shores High School and holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University. For the past 18 years, Roth has owned and operated Regan Insurance serving clients throughout the Florida Keys and the state. Before that, he owned Holiday Isle Watersports.

“We welcome Joe to the board,” said FKEC board President Dr. Jim Boilini. “His knowledge of our community and professional experience will be an asset to the co-op members.”

Roth is also involved in community organizations, having served as the chairperson for many non-profit boards. He is past president and current director of the Upper Keys Rotary Club; Rotary District 6990 past assistant governor; Islamorada Chamber of Commerce past president and current board member; Centennial Bank regional board member; has served for 10 years as chairman of the Plantation Key School Advisory Council; and currently is the Islamorada Fishing Club president.

“I am proud to join the FKEC board,” said Roth. “I look forward to working with the cooperative directors and staff to represent and serve the interest of my neighbors in the Tavernier District.”

n December, Mike Johnson took over as General Manager for Boy Scouts of America’s Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. It’s been a long journey for Johnson to get to this point. At first a summer job back in 1988, his work at Sea Base soon turned into a full time position with the Boy Scouts of America traveling the country, and now he’s back. How things change. For example, it wasn’t too long ago that while both were working at Sea Base, his then girlfriend, now wife, Julie, jokingly said she wouldn’t marry someone who wasn’t PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certified. So he wasted no time. Today, they are proud parents to two young men, Matthew and Noah. Matthew now works alongside his dad at Sea Base. Both have a busy summer ahead guiding some of the more than 13,000 young people who pass through the Sea Base every year. But the adventure is just getting started.

Y

ou had the opportunity to work alongside Sam Wampler in Sea Base’s early years. What was one thing he taught you?

Sam said “If you’re green, you grow, and if you’re ripe, you rot.” I’ve taken that to mean you should constantly push yourself to be better.

You credit your wife with introducing and teaching you how to wind surf.

What have been some of the most important things she has taught you?

Julie has taught me patience and strength in challenging situations.

Originally from Oklahoma, you fell in love with sailing after learning from your grandfather and father on a lake somewhere in Kansas. That’s a long way from the Atlantic Ocean. What would you tell a Midwestern boy who wants to be an adventuring Keys sailor? Find a way to get on the water wherever you are and learn to enjoy and respect the water.

Your oldest son, Matthew, was an Eagle Scout and plans on working at Sea Base with you this summer. What are you most excited to do together this summer? We are planning to go to the Dry Tortugas on one of his days off; it should be an incredible experience.

Aside from the ocean, you also do some canyoneering. Which of the two is a more formidable setting, and which requires more planning? I think canyoneering is more formidable and requires more planning. You must know what canyon you are in, if the anchors are solid, that the harness and carabiner are set up correctly and that you have enough rope before you descend.

Although running out of rope could be compared to running out of air…

What type of adventure are you drawn to? Experiences that are challenging and provide the opportunity to learn. A recent Outside magazine article stated it is better to spend money on experiences than things.

If you were stranded on an island with one person to help you and only one tool to use, how would you escape? A friend and I would hike Zion National Park each fall and we often asked “If you were stranded on an island and could bring only one thing, what would it be?”. He said “A brewery with a salt and pepper chip factory attached to it”. It’s not quite the answer you’re looking for, but I’m going with that!

How has Sea Base changed to support educational S.T.E.M-based programs?

We offer Eco Adventure Programs and the STEM program; Scouts report coral bleaching; catch, tag and release fish, will partner with MOTE Marine Laboratory in their coral restoration program and more.

What book or movie has affected your life the most? “The Razor’s Edge” by Somerset Maugham…read it as a college freshman. Bill Murray did a pretty good job in the 1984 movie.

How has Sea Base most changed over the span of its existence? It has become significantly more complex and bigger since I worked here from 1988 to 1992; and the boats are a lot nicer…

What are five things every scout should carry? Dental floss (you can use it for so many things), a good pocket knife, a handkerchief (can be used to strain water and bind wounds), watch and a small notepad (like “Field Notes”).

Besides Florida, you’ve worked in Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, and Kansas while with the Boy Scouts of America. What has each location taught you? Saint Paul, Minnesota: the importance of warm clothes; Kansas City, Missouri: low cost of living in a friendly Midwestern town; Greenville, North Carolina: beautiful beaches and incredible history; Wichita, Kansas: importance of family – my parents live there – and to get both boys through high school with no moves.

How would you encourage someone who wants to be more active and play more often outdoors? The outdoors is a pretty big place with lots to offer to …find something you are passionate about and pursue it. Scheduling time to get outside is important as well with all the busyness in our lives.

If you could bring back any historical figure to help the world be better place, who would it be? Amelia Earhart, she was an amazing pioneer and fearless.

If scouting hadn’t turned into a profession, what career could you see yourself in? A meteorologist; I find it fascinating.

Here is a list of activities to help you plan your holiday.

PARADES • KEY LARGO: The 4th of July parade theme is “Salute to Teachers.” The 42nd annual parade starts at 10 a.m. from U.S.1 MM 98 and travels north to MM 100. The grand marshals are Chuck and Nancy Ellsworth. It’s free to enter a float and awards will be given for most original, best theme, best business and most beautiful.

• MARATHON: The annual parade starts at 11 a.m., following a route from Marathon High School on Sombrero Beach Road to the beachfront.

PICNICS • ISLAMORADA: The village’s Independence Day Celebration is to be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at Founders Park at MM 87 with family fun, food, and apple pie contest.

Food and drinks are to be available for purchase (Chef Drew’s Island Catering, Craig’s Restaurant, M.E.A.T. Eatery & Taproom, IL Pizzarello and Polar Ice). Proceeds benefit the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation. Live entertainment scheduled and on-site parking is $5 per vehicle.

• KEY LARGO: The parade will be followed by a picnic at Key Largo Communiity Park (behind Walgreen’s at MM 100). The festivities start at 10:30 a.m. and feature free hot dogs and sodas while supplies last.

FIREWORKS • ISLAMORADA: In Islamorada, fireworks close the village’s Independence Day Celebration which runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at Founders Park at MM 87.

• KEY LARGO: At approximately 10 p.m. in Key Largo, the annual bayfront Blackwater Sound fireworks celebration at MM 104 is to provide a dazzling display of shimmering lights. SPORTS CELEBRITY TOURNAMENT RETURNS

n Friday and Saturday, June 23-24, Founders Park in Islamorada will again host the annual Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys/University of Miami Sport Hall of Fame Celebrity Fishing Tournament. Proceeds of the tournament benefit Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys, The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, Coastal Conservation Association and the university’s sports hall of fame.

The festivities kick off with a captains’ meeting and party, on Friday, June 23 from 5 to 10 p.m. The next morning, it’s “lines-out” for a full day of fishing. In the afternoon, the party continues with an official weigh-in followed by dinner and an award ceremony.

This year, about 35 Hurricane sports legends will be in attendance, including Hall of Famers Jimmy Johnson and Warren Sapp, 1992 Heisman Trophy winner Gino Torretta, Clinton Portis, Brett Romberg, Gary Dunn, Damione Lewis, and tournament host and NFL Hall of Famer Ted “The Stork” Hendricks.

KIDS, SAND AND LAWS

Teacher brings civics to classroom

K

ris Sullivan believes educated kids will make the difference for the future of Florida Bay. Sullivan, a teacher at Treasure Village Montessori, made connections for her first-and secondgrade students by working with local nonprofit Florida Bay Forever and state Rep. Holly Raschein.

With diggers, shovels, buckets and a water hose, students recreated the state’s waterways at Founders Park beach to realize that the Florida Bay is directly influenced by what happens to Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie, the Caloosahatchee and the watershed of the Everglades National Park.

In the classroom, students learned how laws are created and how they affect the Florida Bay, and that kids and adults can communicate with policymakers to make a difference.

“Kids can see the essence of problems,” Sullivan said. “There is no gray area for a child when it comes to preserving the environment. They think we should do everything possible to keep our water clean.”

Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? My biggest inspiration at Coral Shores has been Mrs. Thiery. I’ve had her as a teacher for four years and she’s a really great person. Even my freshman year when I made awful videos she pushed me to be my best.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? Video Productions has prepared me the most for life after high school since I’m going into the film industry.

Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? I like Instagram because it allows me to express myself and share my creativity with the community and my friends. My favorite filter is Aden.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? I think one of the biggest problems facing the Keys is pollution. Whenever I see trash, I pick it up but I just wish more people down here would care more about our environment.

What are your plans after high school? After high school I am going to Flagler College where I will major in media productions and minor in film studies Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? Honestly, I don’t think I will.

I want to travel the world and experience different cultures; it’s going to be a while until I settle down.

he Green Turtle Inn’s colorful history is colorfully told by the photographs on the walls.

The restaurant has welcomed many celebrity personalities throughout its long tenure.

Some of the most familiar names include Joe Namath, Mickey Mantle, Buddy Hackett, Jack Paar, Jimmy Buffett, Guy Fieri, and the cast of “Bloodline.” The Green Turtle Inn has also appeared in several shows throughout the years.

The onsite shop has also begun a growler program, with 32 and 64 ounce growlers of all the beer available on tap. With the addition of another seven taps for wine, and one signature cocktail, the Green Turtle Inn is the perfect happy hour spot.

DO’S AND DON’T’S for when your friends say “I do”

recently read an article from an upset bride who wrote into an advice column on slate.com.

Her dilemma was whether to continue being friends with the best man of their wedding who proposed to his girlfriend in the middle of the ceremony. How could this best man have chosen that moment to propose to his girlfriend - a moment that the bride and groom had planned for months and that should have been solely theirs?

Apparently, no one ever told him about wedding etiquette.

As we approach the height of wedding season, here are few thoughts to help you with what to do and what not to do as a wedding guest.

DO RSVP When you receive your invitation, look for the reply card and the “due date.” This is the date the couple is requesting to know whether you are or are not attending. This date is important as most venues require couples to commit to a specific number of attendees by a specific date. So be sure to send in your RSVP as soon as possible.

DO NOT assume you can bring a date If you are invited to bring a date, the invitation will be addressed to you and guest. This is important, as many couples must stay under a certain number of people to stay within their budget.

If you are invited solo, find out who else is attending and plan your accommodations and transportation together. If you’re too uncomfortable to attend alone, then decline the invitation. But whatever you do, do not ask the couple if you can bring a date. If they could afford to have you plus a guest, they would have.

DO bring a gift As with any gift, it’s not about how much you spend, it’s the thought that counts. There is no minimum or maximum amount that should be spent; just consider your budget and your relationship to the couple when purchasing the gift. Most couples will register for items they would like to start their life together. If you’re not sure where they’ve registered, try googling their names and it’s likely

Do be on time Yes, it’s true that most weddings start late, but you shouldn’t be. Plan to be there at least 15 minutes before the start of the ceremony and be sure to use the restroom before it starts.

DO NOT post photos to social media The bride and groom have hired photographers and videographers to capture the day and night. And many places of worship prohibit the use of phones or cameras during a religious ceremony. If you feel you absolutely must take photos of the bride and groom, wait until the reception and then be sure to get the couple’s permission before posting them to social media. Better yet, turn off your phone and be there in the moment. Let the professional photographer and videographer capture you celebrating with the bride and groom.

And finally, DO celebrate Weddings are a time for celebration, so be sure to wear your dancing shoes and socialize with other guests.

Although you should have fun, DO NOT get drunk. One drink too many and you could create a lasting impression (negative) on the couple and all their guests.

kip and Judy Weiner retired to Key Largo in 2012 to be close to the ocean. Both had a lifelong passion for snorkeling, fishing and being around the water. After they visited their first Morada Way ArtWalk, and signed up for pottery classes, they fell in love with clay.

Initially, they started clay art to create Christmas ornaments for their kids, grandkids and friends. But soon their hobby and passion would meet, and with an appreciation of the sea in mind, they began making nautical and sea-life themed clay works.

The pottery that Skip creates is meant to mimic what he’s observed while snorkeling. Judy makes customized gift ideas, like the Snow Bird Christmas tree ornament, which incorporates a flamingo on a snowflake for the laugh.

The two use plenty of light, bright and pastel colors to give each piece a serene and relaxed feel.

colors,” said Skip. “Typically the process requires two to three days to create a single piece, while some take a couple hours, depending on the intricacy. After it comes out, you glaze it, paint it, and fire it again. Then the glaze becomes glass-like and melts onto the pottery.”

The process isn’t without danger, however. When the time comes to “fire” the pottery, temperatures can reach anywhere from 1,800 to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit, said Skip, who also said owning his own equipment means a constant learning process.

“It feels really good to make something and have someone buy it. It gives you a lot of satisfaction to know someone liked something you created enough to purchase,” he said.

Clay works range in price from $25 to $50. Skip and Judy have each created more than 100 originals this year, and have no plans of slowing down. Morada Way Clay is located at the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District at MM 81.5 on the ocean side.

hen a morning pick-me-up is necessary, there a few better options than a local Cuban cafecito. While most mornings for Lamee Leal include café con leche, every now and then a sizable shot of espresso, otherwise known as a colada, is needed. Leal said Denny’s Latin Café has the most authentic tasting and energy boosting coladas in the Florida Keys. She would know — she hails from Havana.

Leal says the perfect colada is made to fit each drinker’s sugar preference and always includes a generous amount of love. While the coffee is one of the most popularized characteristic of her culture, Leal says that signature Cuban food likes pan con lechon, ropa vieja, torrejas, and flan are considered just as important.

Leal has worked at Denny’s Latin Café for four years and makes a mean cafecito — not too sweet or too bitter. The Key Largo native spend her free time with family at the beach and fishing for cubera snapper, grouper, and hog fish.

A

quick phone call from Paddle the Florida Keys’ owner Scott Baste, and the plans for my first stand-up paddleboard trip are finally set. I’ve seen the popularity of stand-up paddling grow, but never tried it myself. Until today.

I’m no stranger to the mangroves or board sports, and because I figure if I was going to be eaten by an alligator, it would have happened by now, I’m not too concerned with peril. But it is obvious, in the world of paddling, I am a noob.

I have a bit of a learning curve to overcome, I think to myself as I walk across the wooden docks behind the paddle shop’s Tavernier Creek location. The sunset eco-tour is slated for two hours, and I don’t really know how my rickety bad back would hold up. “You’ll do fine,” says Andrea Burris, another guest on the tour (and excellent stand-in photographer). I believe her.

Before leaving the dock, paddle guru Scott gives me a quick rundown on how to maneuver the board. I hop on mine, legs wobbling, and shuffle for a moment before my weight centers. I paddle around a bit before I get the hang of it. Good to go. We’re off.

We push off as a small group of paddlers and one canoe, and make our way toward Tavernier Creek Bridge. Most in the group have been on the tour before and know the deal.

The current is ripping through the middle of the creek, so Scott leads the group to the outer edges for a smoother ride. I paddle ahead into the still waters just in time to see snapper and barracuda darting around underneath my feet.

Just downstream, the group turns the bend and heads for the “mangrove tunnels.”

The stories will publish every week. Some are pretty straightforward, no-experienceneeded adventures of a day; others focus on the treasures awaiting locals and visitors “off the beaten path.”]

As we get to our destination, I make a mistake. Miscalculating a shift in my weight, I slide left and fall in.

The group giggles for a moment, and teases that I wanted to “cool off.” Seeing as the last of my dignity is now at the bottom of Tavernier Creek, I shake it off and hop back on.

The “tunnels” begin as a small opening in the mangroves, then become as eerie as they are narrow the further you advance. Stretches of mangrove branches form a canopy that eventually becomes so low, it requires me to sit on my board and pull myself through. “This is pretty cool,” I randomly blurt out in my excitement.

After a little exploring in the mangroves, it’s time to head back. But now we have to paddle against the current.

Scott tells us about a group of paddlers he had to rescue from the current earlier, so we listen when he tells us to stay close to the mangroves. The journey back is bit more challenging, but I use the opportunity as a chance to try my amateur race skills. Sore and tired, I pull myself up to the floating dock ready to go home, but not until I fall in one last time — for good measure.

Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS) a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence has the following open positions:

Domestic Violence Primary Prevention/Outreach Advocate (Full Time)

This is a non-degreed position. The purpose of the primary prevention program is to deliver prevention education and awareness to the targeted youth population by delivering a series of educational classes in the class room as well as at community events while creating a coordinated community to respond to intimate partner violence in an effort to reduce, better respond to and eliminate it. Additional responsibilities include Direct Service provision to domestic violence survivors in Outreach locations. The work schedule is primarily M-F 8-5 with some weekends and evenings, but candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups and possess excellent organizational skills. Those who identify as survivors of violence or abuse are encouraged to apply.

Domestic Violence Advocates

The Domestic Abuse shelter has an opening for FT and PT Advocates. Advocates provide coverage of a 24-hour shelter and hotline, advocacy in criminal and civil justice systems, and safety planning with survivors of domestic violence.

Candidates will work varied shifts and should have experience in social service related fields. Those who identify as survivors of violence or abuse are encouraged to apply.
