“W
e’ve been talking about affordable housing for 20 years. And all we’ve done is taken affordable housing and made it unaffordable,” said Monroe County Mayor George Neugent. Neugent was summing up a recent discussion about homes built with affordable housing deed restrictions. When Monroe County started emphasizing this type of construction, the deed restriction typically lasted 20 years. (Since then, various municipalities are upping new deed restrictions to 30 or 50 years.) As the deed expires, the homeowner can then sell the home at market rate. The sale price at today’s market value inevitably removes the home from the “affordable” designation.
According to Mayte Santamaria, senior director of county Planning and Environmental Resources, there are about 825 affordable deed-restricted homes in Monroe County. Of those, 47 expire at the end of the year. Another 38 will expire before 2020. By 2030, another 128 will expire. The county discussed offering homeowners cash to extend the affordable housing deed restriction. Homeowners would still be able to sell their homes if they choose, but only for an affordable amount set forth in the initial agreement. “I think this is an exercise in futility,” said Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy. “I own several of these properties and the deeds will expire in two or three years. I have no intention of selling it back (to the county). Whatever incentive the county could provide would not offset the market value. It simply does not compute.”

Commissioner David Rice, who owns similar properties, some of which are actually deedrestricted, concurred. But Commissioner Heather Carruthers turned the tide with blunt words, and was able to persuade the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to at least explore the idea. “Call me cynical,” Carruthers said. “We talk about this but never do anything about it. Here’s another example. We can’t completely dismiss it. What about the homeowners who have 15 years until the expiration? If we said, ‘Here’s $100,000,’ they might take it. If I have a kid that’s headed to college that $100,000 looks pretty good to me right now.” The commission acknowledged the pros of the plan — there would be no “NIMBY” reaction as single-family homes already exist in neighborhoods. And whatever the county might offer in payment to extend a deed restriction would likely be cheaper than acquiring land and building a new home. County administrator Roman Gastesi said there might be a small percentage of homeowners interested in such a deal. “We don’t know the homeowners’ mindset. There might be a few,” he said. “This is a tangible maybe.” The commission instructed Santamaria to identify the deedrestricted homes with at least 15 years left on the affordable designation and to work with an appraiser to develop a fair calculation of value.

Picnics, parades and pyrotechnics Independence Day celebrations
From Key Largo to Key West, celebrations are planned to mark the 241st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Here is a list of activities to help you plan your holiday. Picnics • BIG PINE KEY: The Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary Club is to host pre-Independence Day activities beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Big Pine Community Park, MM 30. Attractions include vendors, food, beverages, games, family activities and entertainment by the Prime Movers and Island Harmony Singers. Free admission; no coolers, no pets, no personal fireworks. • MARATHON: The Rotary Club of Marathon puts on one of the Keys’ largest and longest fireworks displays from Sombrero Beach. The party starts earlier, though, with drinks and food for sale, kids’ activities, and live music. Free admission. • ISLAMORADA: The village’s Independence Day Celebration is to be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at Founders Park at MM 87 with family fun, food, and apple pie contest. Food and drinks are to be available for purchase (Chef Drew’s Island Catering, Craig’s Restaurant, M.E.A.T. Eatery & Taproom, IL Pizzarello and Polar Ice). Proceeds benefit the Upper Keys Rotary Foundation. Live entertainment scheduled and on-site parking is $5 per vehicle.
Parades • MARATHON: The annual parade starts at 11 a.m., following a route from Marathon High School on Sombrero Beach Road to the beachfront. Fireworks • BIG PINE KEY: Fireworks are a day early — Monday, July 3 — at Big Pine Community Park, MM 30. Fireworks are scheduled at 9 p.m. Best viewing is from the park. • MARATHON: Hosted by Marathon Rotary Club, the fireworks are ignited at Sombrero Beach. Yotis Myriallis
O
ct. 11, 1939 - June 16, 2017 Yotis Myriallis was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and for the last 21 years of his life he resided in the Florida Keys. Educated in Ethiopia and Athens, Greece, he later studied architecture in London, England. He returned to Ethiopia to work for an architecture firm where he designed and built both commercial and residential structures, including one for the emperor Haile Selassie of which he was very proud. He left Ethiopia in 1975, moving to Athens, Greece, where he was the general manager of a Lloyds of London insurance brokerage. By 1985 Yotis had moved to the United States, living in New York where he delved into the world of reinsurance. After an illustrious career, Yotis retired and moved to the Florida Keys, becoming a citizen in 1996. Retirement didn’t last long; he moved back to Rhodes where he was a partner in a car rental business. After his father’s passing, Yotis moved back to the Florida Keys, where he met the love of his life, D’El Neukomm. After a whirlwind romance they were married in Lindos on the island of Rhodes and made their life together between Rhodes and America. Yotis is survived by his loving wife D’El; sisters Mary, Electra and Angela; brother Laky; one son, George (wife Leda), grandson Ion, and seven nieces and nephews. Intelligent and well-traveled, Yotis spoke five languages, was an avid white hunter and a winning rally race car driver. Dearly loved, he will be missed. Services will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Dean Lopez Funeral Chapel 31140 Overseas Hwy., on Big Pine Key.

Summer stuff at Marathon library • A technology demonstration specially geared toward children ages 5-12 will take place on Tuesday, June 27 at 1:30 p.m. as part of the summer “Build a Better World” summer reading program taking place through Aug. 12. • Teens in grades 6-12 can register for the “Build a Better World” summer reading program taking place on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. throughout the summer. ‘I’M GONNA ROCK YOUR WORLD’ Jim Knight to talk about corporate culture and the school of Hard Rock to hospitality industry SARA MATTHIS

im Knight will speak on Wednesday, June 28 at the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association meeting in Key West. This comes on the heels of a private gig in Key Largo to the corporate managers of Hooligans. The Orlando native is making a livelihood, and making a difference to nonprofits and businesses nationwide, on the strength of his 20-plus years at Hard Rock in training and now as a consultant with his own company, Knight Speaker. Prepare to be motivated. And Knight, laughing, says he gets his inspiration from subjects as varied as Tony Robbins to Stuart Smalley of “Saturday Night Live.” (Doggone it, people like me!) His favorite topic is corporate culture and he has an entire book devoted to that subject — “Culture That Rocks: How to Revolutionize Your Company’s Culture” (2014). The Keys Weekly had the chance to ask him some questions in advance of his visit. So you’re a native Floridian from the Orlando area, but have you ever been to the Keys? Of course. I take at least two vacations there a year, mostly in the Upper Keys. What teasers can you offer about the upcoming workshop in Key West? I talk a lot about corporate culture and culture that rocks. (Because I worked for Hard Rock for 21 years, I use every iteration of “rock” and “roll” that I can manage.) I talk about hiring and retaining rock stars. And I also touch on the backside of the employee lifecycle, getting them to stay longer. What is “culture?” It might mean something different to me than it does to you, but it’s mission No. 1 because it means a shared mindset about how to offer differentiated guest service — how to customize and individualize guest service.

Keys employers often say it’s difficult to find employees and turnover is high, especially in the islands. How can that be changed? It may be more challenging in the Keys, but I promise you the solution is no different anywhere else. You have to spend time and energy and it’s never about the product — stuff you sell or deliver — it’s about the culture. Because when you focus on internal talent, it bubbles up and parlays over to the guest experience. It’s like an iceberg — you only see the smallest part exposed at the surface. That’s the guest experience. But the 80 to 85 percent no one ever sees is where people in hospitality spend their time. I try to make it fun for employees with contests and reward mechanisms. Then the owner or manager can get out of the way because they raised this army of giants who can bring the thunder — whether it’s quiet and subtle or over the top and grandiose. Describe a tricky situation guest interaction and your how you resolved it. Well, I can’t think of a single incident, but in general, I am focused on service recovery because something has gone sideways. My mentality was never ‘I am going to go over and solve the issue.’ I always think, ‘I am going over to table 26 and I am going to crush it. AND, I have no idea what’s going to happen.’ I get down on one knee, I throw myself on my sword, and I am authentic. I am going to rock their world.
Is there a better type of tourist? Well, first I don’t call them that because it has a negative connotation for locals. I call them travelers. I don’t know if there’s a good kind or a bad kind. I want people that have money and won’t destroy the environment. How’s that? Where do hospitality and tourism intersect? I will give you one of my favorite examples. Mike and Carol Shipley, old friends of mine, own a small resort in Tavernier called Island Bay Resort. They have incredible reviews on TripAdvisor. The third most common comment is about the hosts. In the end, a good trip is about the person who set up the deep sea fishing trip, or the servers at the place where you went to eat. It’s not about the color of the paint. That hospitality permeates the entire experience. It’s what makes people become raving fans. Is the customer always right? It’s a double-edged sword. But the politically correct answer is “Yes, of course.” We want guests to be gaga about their experience, the customer is always right and we should do anything in our power to make them feel like that, knowing we can’t solve every problem. On the other hand, we want to give our employees the ability to make a decision and be part of the brand. That takes time and trust. Do you play an instrument? No, I am a singer. That’s what I got my degree in — but it’s more formal like choral work, church and opera. (Laughing) I can do a great wedding or funeral if you need it. Fill in the blanks. It’s Friday night and I have my feet up on the coffee table. I have a (blank) in one hand and am listening to (blank). Oh, no. This is going to sound weird, but I am drinking either Baby’s Coffee or a virgin piña colada and listening to Rush.

Tippy returns to the sea
M
ore than 300 people were at Sombrero Beach last Friday to bid Tippy, a 100-pound sub adult loggerhead sea turtle, bon voyage. Tippy was rescued in March off Rock Harbor in Key Largo where he was found floating and unable to dive. The Turtle Hospital, in Marathon, treated Tippy for emaciation and an intestinal impaction. After gaining 15 pounds, Tippy was released healthy and ready to return home to the sea. — Weekly Staff report

WISE AS AN OWL? Spokes-birds spread sales messages
W
ay back in 1971, there were a couple of feathered spokes-birds that were wise as owls. … And that is because they were owls! The National Park Service had the legendary Woodsy Owl, and he was really good at spreading the message of conservation. (Give a hoot, don’t pollute!) The other spokes-owl was the equally legendary Mr. Owl from the Tootsie Pop commercials. He was the one who figured out that the number of licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop was three. (Five is right out!) Since then, outside of some college mascots and the Hooters logo, owls have just not been very fashionable as sales animals. But a couple of years ago, eyeglass retailer America’s Best employed a digitally generated bespectacled spokes-owl. This advertising campaign features the spokesowl and eyeglass-wearing potential customers trying to outsnark each other, with a plethora of “whos” tossed about in each commercial. Perhaps because of the success of this campaign, it seems that the floodgates have opened. Owls are coming out of the woodwork, so to speak, to educate us all on the wisdom of buying their particular product. The two newest spokes-owls are quite annoying, each in its own separate way. The first, having made its debut a few months earlier, is an owl dressed up in professor’s attire, lecturing its audience about the wisdom of trying a particular new anti-allergy drug. “Be wise all, try new Xyzal,” the owl says. No thank you, I’ll pass. The other new spokes-bird is a puppet-like animation of the TripAdvisor logo owl. This new feathered huckster stands like Napoleon in a lab coat, condescendingly urging its audience to try TripAdvisor’s new booking service. And isn’t that just what the world needs – another online hotelbooking service? Through the miracles of modern digital technology, a person can spend more time looking for a hotel room than actually staying in one. And no matter what you pay, there is still somebody out there getting a better deal! And judging from the similarities in their logos, I think the Hooters owl and the TripAdvisor owl are somehow related.
It makes me wonder about other products or services for which an owl could be a good spokesperson – I mean spokesbird. Owls are birds of prey, so why not a pest control or JOHN extermination serBARTUS vice? Two glowing eyes would appear, and an ominous voice would say, “Angry Owl Exterminators – survival is not an option.” A spokes-bird like that would strike fear into the hearts of vermin everywhere ... at least those that watched TV. Perhaps one of those online matchmaking sites could use a spokes-owl. “If you’re looking for a special someone to get naked with and spend a lifetime together, make a ‘wise’ choice. Wise Owl Matches, because you don’t want to end up with a turkey!” It won’t be long, however, before owls fall out of fashion as sales animals. Madison Avenue will want a new critter to sell stuff to unsuspecting humans, and we have the perfect critter here: the iguana! A cute, cuddly huge green lizard might be the best sales animal of all for, say, an insurance company. “Iggy” could kick the crap out of the Geico gecko, and cause Progressive’s Flo to jump onto a chair and scream her lungs out. n June 15, Marathon Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron hosted a campaign party for Matt Caldwell. The state representative of seven years from Fort Myers is running for Commissioner of Agriculture in the 2018 election. He likened the department’s work to the television show “Dirty Jobs” starring Mike Rowe. EXPRESSIONISM & IMPRESSIONISM Artist Spotlight: Dustin Porta Porta’s artwork can be found locally at Shady Palms Art Gallery in Marathon and at several Gulf Coast galleries in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
A
fter sailing the Gulf Coast, writing a couple books, and looking for a new way to express himself, Dustin Porta found his niche through his travels and his friends. He says he found the beauty of “industrial expressionism” in the rusty and rustic oil rigs lit up at night in the middle on the Gulf. Since moving to the Keys about a year ago, he found the local lighthouses have the same appeal. “I’d say the form is like Monet, I like to capture the light in the paintings so people can see what is not there,” Porta said. “It keeps it surreal.” In Marathon, he is able to tap into his artsy nature twice — as one of the newest artists featured at Shady Palm Art Gallery in Marathon; and as a bookworm while working at Food For Thought. He is a published author of several science fiction fantasy novels and poetry, and said while he struggled as an author, he is thriving as an artist. “Marathon is such a supportive community with a small-town, welcome feeling,” said Porta. He moved to Marathon with his marine biologist girlfriend Jenny after stints in New Orleans and Fairhope, Alabama. “Everyone here has been so encouraging,” he said. He said his art grew roots, of all places, in an old barn in Pennsylvania where he and a graffiti artist painted canvas sails. From there he became friends with a professional sailor who helped him tap into his whimsical and spiritual side, and locally, he’s impressed with Dani Morley, whose work focuses on marine life in pointillism. His uncle, Kris, is also a local painter and wood carver. “Everywhere I go, I try to tap into new styles and ways to express my art,” he said. “Being an artist is ever evolving.” Lori Gaukel, the owner of Shady Palms, said she’s happy to have Porta in the gallery. “He’s got a fresh perspective and beautiful pieces,” she said. Porta has a couple of “side hustles” — he teaches poetry writing and painting workshops for interested parties.

nstallation has begun on the new Florida Keys Sculpture Trail, permanent fixtures representing seven artists, eight locations and nine sculptures. From Islamorada to Key West, residents and visitors alike can view and enjoy the free public art. The Art Trail came at no cost to the taxpayers, thanks to the generosity of Florida Keys philanthropists Jacob Dekker and John Padget, Monroe County Board of County Commissioners, the county’s Art in Public Places Committee, Florida Keys Council of the Arts and the Art Students League of New York. Dekker and Padget funded the transportation and installation, as well as signs for the sculpture. The recipients of the sculptures will own them outright, obligating them to provide site preparation and maintenance. The works are by emerging artists from the legendary Art Students League of New York, a prominent advanced art school and community – with ties to such artists as Georgia O’Keeffe, Norman Rockwell and Jackson Pollock – that dates back to 1875. When New York City hosted the trail along Riverside Park South on the Hudson River, Dekker and Padget saw the works and were inspired to give them a permanent home in the Keys. “These are purely for our enjoyment,” said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, “Public art is about sparking a conversation.” While this is just the beginning, it has been created with the potential and hopes it will grow, with more art in the years to come.

A
quick phone call from Paddle the Florida Keys’ owner Scott Baste, and the plans for my first stand-up paddleboard trip are finally set. I’ve seen the popularity of stand-up paddling grow, but never tried it myself. Until today. I’m no stranger to the mangroves or board sports, and because I figure if I was going to be eaten by an alligator, it would have happened by now, I’m not too concerned with peril. But it is obvious, in the world of paddling, I am a noob. I have a bit of a learning curve to overcome, I think to myself as I walk across the wooden docks behind the paddle shop’s Tavernier Creek location. The sunset eco-tour is slated for two hours, and I don’t really know how my rickety bad back would hold up. “You’ll do fine,” says Andrea Burris, another guest on the tour (and excellent stand-in photographer). I believe her. Before leaving the dock, paddle guru Scott gives me a quick rundown on how to maneuver the board. I hop on mine, legs wobbling, and shuffle for a moment before my weight centers. I paddle around a bit before I get the hang of it. Good to go. We’re off.

We push off as a small group of paddlers and one canoe, and make our way toward Tavernier Creek Bridge. Most in the group have been on the tour before and know the deal. The current is ripping through the middle of the creek, so Scott leads the group to the outer edges for a smoother ride. I paddle ahead into the still waters just in time to see snapper and barracuda darting around underneath my feet. Just downstream, the group turns the bend and heads for the “mangrove tunnels.”

Some are pretty straightforward, no-experienceneeded adventures of a day; others focus on the treasures awaiting locals and visitors “off the beaten path.”]
As we get to our destination, I make a mistake. Miscalculating a shift in my weight, I slide left and fall in. The group giggles for a moment, and teases that I wanted to “cool off.” Seeing as the last of my dignity is now at the bottom of Tavernier Creek, I shake it off and hop back on. The “tunnels” begin as a small opening in the mangroves, then become as eerie as they are narrow the further you advance. Stretches of mangrove branches form a canopy that eventually becomes so low, it requires me to sit on my board and pull myself through. “This is pretty cool,” I randomly blurt out in my excitement. After a little exploring in the mangroves, it’s time to head back. But now we have to paddle against the current. Scott tells us about a group of paddlers he had to rescue from the current earlier, so we listen when he tells us to stay close to the mangroves. The journey back is bit more challenging, but I use the opportunity as a chance to try my amateur race skills. Sore and tired, I pull myself up to the floating dock ready to go home, but not until I fall in one last time — for good measure.

ew performers can turn a night of karaoke into a successful career in show business, but Dan Finnerty pulled it off. You might know Finnerty and his comedic musical group, The Dan Band, from their scene stealing appearance in the iconic comedy “Old School,” but that performance is a sliver of a remarkable story. In advance of The Dan Band’s July 1st shows at the Key West Theater, we caught up with foul-mouthed lead singer (and incredibly nice guy) to discuss grown men performing female-power anthems, being in the right place at the right time, and how drunkenly singing “I Am Woman” can change your life. Keys Weekly: So, I heard you were a cast member of Stomp? DF: I was living in New York, trying out for things, and one day as a joke, I got in line for a Stomp audition. It was after a bad callback for another Broadway show and I saw the line and thought, “Well, I’m out and already took a shower.” KW: Sometimes it helps to not take things too seriously. DF: This whole girl song thing started as a joke, too. In New York I sang “I Am Woman” at karaoke and thought it was really funny. When I moved to L.A. a friend of mine needed someone to open for her to make it look like she was headlining saying, “Just sing anything, it doesn’t matter.” KW: And that led to more gigs? DF: The guy who books the Viper Room happened to be there and he started booking me. Then, later on, I started playing at Largo.

KW: This all leads up to the Bravo network special you had in 2005, right? DF: At one point after the show my wife came backstage and said Steven Spielberg is here to see you. (Laughing) And I was like, “good one.” KW: THE Steven Spielberg? DF: Yeah, it was that one. He came up and said (sincere voice), “My wife and I loved the movie ‘Old School’ because my company Dream Works produced it … and he’s like going down his resume. I said, “I know your work, man. I could probably help you out.”
KW: Watching your live show, I was struck by the eclectic audience. DF: At first, the more popular it got, the girls would be dragging their boyfriends who would just get drunk enough to out themselves for knowing every word of these songs. But then once the movies came out it turned into guys dragging their girlfriends to the show. KW: I was also surprised how little the show is like your rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in “Old School.” DF: It’s funny, because “Total Eclipse” is the least entertaining song in the whole show. KW: Have you gone all rock star yet and refused to play it? DF: Oh no, I’m a whore. One time they asked us to do it again, and I was like, “Okay.” I didn’t care. It was some private party at the Playboy mansion, all these sad Wall Street guys who by midnight were disillusioned that it wasn’t going to be this free sex party. KW: Was working on those movies as much fun as it looked? DF: It was awesome, especially “Old School.” Todd Phillips said I’m doing this scene and it just says, “Wedding singer sings.” What would you sing at a wedding? KW: And next thing you’re changing “Total Eclipse” forever? DF: Todd said, “Wait, are you going to say fuck like you do in your show? And I was like, can I? And he’s like, ‘fuck yeah.’ And I’m like, ‘well fucking buckle up.’” KW: What’s next for you and the Dan Band? DF: I’m working on a one-man show that I wrote about growing up and it’ll debut early next winter. We’re doing it at a theater outside of Boston and then hope to bring it to New York. KW: The title? DF: (Laughing) It’s called “Little Orphan Danny” because I was adopted. It’s all about growing up in a small farm town, and finding my birth mother, and working that out with my mom. It is a comedy, but it gets tender in the middle.” KW: Ever been to Key West? DF: No, I haven’t. And at first I didn’t have the right visual in my head, but when I realized where it actually is and what it looks like, I thought, “This is awesome.” We’re very excited, and I really hope people come out and have a good time.

Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS) a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence has the following open positions:
Domestic Violence Primary Prevention/Outreach Advocate (Full Time)
This is a non-degreed position. The purpose of the primary prevention program is to deliver prevention education and awareness to the targeted youth population by delivering a series of educational classes in the class room as well as at community events while creating a coordinated community to respond to intimate partner violence in an effort to reduce, better respond to and eliminate it. Additional responsibilities include Direct Service provision to domestic violence survivors in Outreach locations. The work schedule is primarily M-F 8-5 with some weekends and evenings, but candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups and possess excellent organizational skills. Those who identify as survivors of violence or abuse are encouraged to apply.

The Domestic Abuse shelter has an opening for FT and PT Advocates. Advocates provide coverage of a 24-hour shelter and hotline, advocacy in criminal and civil justice systems, and safety planning with survivors of domestic violence.
