Poker Run: to be or not to be, now that is the question. The city has found itself in a bit of a pickle when it comes to permitting the Phil Peterson Poker Run. Is there enough profit from the plethora of bikes or are we just inviting pandemonium into our precinct? These are some prominent problems, along with who is going to manage a party of patches and pillons popping the clutch? The police?

Well, someone has to pull it together, pronto, because after all these years, are we really going to pull the plug? So we asked the public …

Poker Run - to be or not to be?

“Yes, but I think security needs to be super enforced,” said Vivian Beck. “Most merchants want it and I think it’s a copout if the city doesn’t want to deal. ABATE (non-profit organization of motorcycle enthusiasts) should help sanction the event so it’s controlled and help with security.”

“I know a lot of people enjoy seeing the bikes,” said Cayley Bernreuter.

“I’ve never had an issue and I live just off Duval. If we have Fantasy Fest, I don’t see that as much different than hosting Poker Run.”

“Absolutely, no question,” said Lori Shubert. “Can’t blame the masses for the problems of a few.”

“I think the answer is yes,” said Travis Doll. “If there hasn’t been that many instances of fights and it’s good for the town, then yes.”

“No, too much noise, they leave a mess and there is not enough respect for the residents who live here,” said Jeremy Pickerson. “Guys will be guys whether security is beefed up or not. They will drink, party and fight if they want to fight regardless.”

nstallation has begun on the new Florida Keys Sculpture Trail, permanent fixtures representing seven artists, eight locations and nine sculptures.

From Islamorada to Key West, residents and visitors alike can view and enjoy the free public art.

The Art Trail came at no cost to the taxpayers, thanks to the generosity of Florida Keys philanthropists Jacob Dekker and John Padget, Monroe County Board of County Commissioners, the county’s Art in Public Places Committee, Florida Keys Council of the Arts and the Art Students League of New York. Dekker and Padget funded the transportation and installation, as well as signs for the sculpture. The recipients of the sculptures will own them outright, obligating them to provide site preparation and maintenance.

The works are by emerging artists from the legendary Art Students League of New York, a prominent advanced art school and community – with ties to such artists as Georgia O’Keeffe, Norman Rockwell and Jackson Pollock – that dates back to 1875. When New York City hosted the trail along Riverside Park South on the Hudson River, Dekker and Padget saw the works and were inspired to give them a permanent home in the Keys.

“These are purely for our enjoyment,” said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, “Public art is about sparking a conversation.” While this is just the beginning, it has been created with the potential and hopes it will grow, with more art in the years to come.

‘I’M GONNA ROCK YOUR WORLD’ Jim Knight to talk about corporate culture and the school of Hard Rock to hospitality industry SARA MATTHIS

im Knight will speak on Wednesday, June 28 at the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association meeting in Key West. This comes on the heels of a private gig in Key Largo to the corporate managers of Hooligans. The Orlando native is making a livelihood, and making a difference to nonprofits and businesses nationwide, on the strength of his 20-plus years at Hard Rock in training and now as a consultant with his own company, Knight Speaker.

Prepare to be motivated. And Knight, laughing, says he gets his inspiration from subjects as varied as Tony Robbins to Stuart Smalley of “Saturday Night Live.” (Doggone it, people like me!)

His favorite topic is corporate culture and he has an entire book devoted to that subject — “Culture That Rocks: How to Revolutionize Your Company’s Culture” (2014).

The Keys Weekly had the chance to ask him some questions in advance of his visit.

So you’re a native Floridian from the Orlando area, but have you ever been to the Keys? Of course. I take at least two vacations there a year, mostly in the Upper Keys.

What teasers can you offer about the upcoming workshop in Key West? I talk a lot about corporate culture and culture that rocks.

(Because I worked for Hard Rock for 21 years, I use every iteration of “rock” and “roll” that I can manage.)

I talk about hiring and retaining rock stars. And I also touch on the backside of the employee lifecycle, getting them to stay longer.

What is “culture?” It might mean something different to me than it does to you, but it’s mission No. 1 because it means a shared mindset about how to offer differentiated guest service — how to customize and individualize guest service.

Are they coming back?

Are they going to spend more money?

Are they speaking about me positively?

Keys employers often say it’s difficult to find employees and turnover is high, especially in the islands. How can that be changed? It may be more challenging in the Keys, but I promise you the solution is no different anywhere else. You have to spend time and energy and it’s never about the product — stuff you sell or deliver — it’s about the culture.

Because when you focus on internal talent, it bubbles up and parlays over to the guest experience. It’s like an iceberg — you only see the smallest part exposed at the surface. That’s the guest experience. But the 80 to 85 percent no one ever sees is where people in hospitality spend their time. I try to make it fun for employees with contests and reward mechanisms. Then the owner or manager can get out of the way because they raised this army of giants who can bring the thunder — whether it’s quiet and subtle or over the top and grandiose.

Describe a tricky situation guest interaction and your how you resolved it. Well, I can’t think of a single incident, but in general, I am focused on service recovery because something has gone sideways. My mentality was never ‘I am going to go over and solve the issue.’ I always think, ‘I am going over to table 26 and I am going to crush it. AND, I have no idea what’s going to happen.’ I get down on one knee, I throw myself on my sword, and I am authentic. I am going to rock their world.

Is there a better type of tourist? Well, first I don’t call them that because it has a negative connotation for locals. I call them travelers. I don’t know if there’s a good kind or a bad kind.

I want people that have money and won’t destroy the environment. How’s that?

Where do hospitality and tourism intersect? I will give you one of my favorite examples.

Mike and Carol Shipley, old friends of mine, own a small resort in Tavernier called Island Bay Resort. They have incredible reviews on TripAdvisor. The third most common comment is about the hosts. In the end, a good trip is about the person who set up the deep sea fishing trip, or the servers at the place where you went to eat. It’s not about the color of the paint. That hospitality permeates the entire experience.

It’s what makes people become raving fans.

Is the customer always right? It’s a double-edged sword.

But the politically correct answer is “Yes, of course.” We want guests to be gaga about their experience, the customer is always right and we should do anything in our power to make them feel like that, knowing we can’t solve every problem. On the other hand, we want to give our employees the ability to make a decision and be part of the brand.

That takes time and trust.

Do you play an instrument?

No, I am a singer. That’s what I got my degree in — but it’s more formal like choral work, church and opera. (Laughing) I can do a great wedding or funeral if you need it.

Fill in the blanks. It’s Friday night and I have my feet up on the coffee table. I have a (blank) in one hand and am listening to (blank). Oh, no. This is going to sound weird, but I am drinking either Baby’s Coffee or a virgin piña colada and listening to Rush.

DOLLARS FOR DEEDS? County explores buying up expiring affordable housing deeds to preserve low-cost housing

A lesson in the methodology of the people’s choice awards

A

lthough the annual Bubbas Awards are proudly surging into a fourth year, we still field a consistent (and understandable) gripe by those who are new to Key West’s official version of the people’s choice awards. Some are delicate, some spend countless hours trolling us on social media, while others make various threats ranging from physical violence to kidnapping our pets (yes, someone said they would take my cat) — all asking, “WHY WAS I NOT NOMINATED FOR A BUBBAS CATEGORY THIS YEAR?” And the answer to that question? We actually don’t choose the top three nominees for the Bubbas — the voters do. Yes, for two long weeks, voters had the option to take a paper ballot from a Key West Weekly, fill out at least 35 of the 85 categories and then drop their ballots at various locations throughout Key West (First State Banks, FKAA, Keys Energy, KW Business Guild, etc.). From there, the Rotary Club of Key West, along with the staffs at the Weekly and Florida Keys Media, spend two nights counting paper ballots (about 30 total hours with more than 20 people) until the top three are declared in each category.

Once that’s done, the voting moves online — that’s where we are in the process right now. Voters visit keysweekly.com and fill out the online questionnaire. The computer recognizes each distinct email address and device, and only allows voters one go at it.

The online voting ends Friday, July 7. Then comes the big reveal: The Bubbas award ceremony is on Saturday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at Key West Theater. Tickets are available through the Weekly office a week in advance. Call 305-453-6928 to put your name on the waiting list.

So, before you troll us on the net, send nasty-grams or threaten our cats — please understand the contest is subjective, it’s decided by the voters … and it’s all for a great cause. Over the past three years the Bubbas have raised over $35,000 for various charities, including the Bahama Village Music Program and Samuel’s House. And this year proceeds will benefit Wesley House Family Services and Rotary’s scholarship programs.

Bubbas Update: Too Close To Call For the past three years of Bubbas voting, the Weekly has kept voting results locked away more securely than Trump’s tax returns. However, the people have spoken and demanded a peek into the action. So ... as of Thursday, June 22, more than 4,240 voters have logged into to cast a ballot in the 2017 Bubbas. “W

e’ve been talking about affordable housing for 20 years. And all we’ve done is taken affordable housing and made it unaffordable,” said Monroe County Mayor George Neugent.

Neugent was summing up a recent discussion about homes built with affordable housing deed restrictions. When Monroe County started emphasizing this type of construction, the deed restriction typically lasted 20 years. (Since then, various municipalities are upping new deed restrictions to 30 or 50 years.) As the deed expires, the homeowner can then sell the home at market rate. The sale price at today’s market value inevitably removes the home from the “affordable” designation.

According to Mayte Santamaria, senior director of county Planning and Environmental Resources, there are about 825 affordable deed-restricted homes in Monroe County. Of those, 47 expire at the end of the year. Another 38 will expire before 2020. By 2030, another 128 will expire.

The county discussed offering homeowners cash to extend the affordable housing deed restriction. Homeowners would still be able to sell their homes if they choose, but only for an affordable amount set forth in the initial agreement.

“I think this is an exercise in futility,” said Monroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy. “I own several of these properties and the deeds will expire in two or three years.

I have no intention of selling it back (to the county). Whatever incentive the county could provide would not offset the market value. It simply does not compute.”

Commissioner David Rice, who owns similar properties, some of which are actually deed-restricted, concurred. But Commissioner Heather Carruthers turned the

tide with blunt words, and was able to persuade the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to at least explore the idea.

“Call me cynical,” Carruthers said.

“We talk about this but never do anything about it. Here’s another example.

We can’t completely dismiss it. What about the homeowners who have 15 years until the expiration? If we said, ‘Here’s $100,000,’ they might take it. If I have a kid that’s headed to college that $100,000 looks pretty good to me right now.”

The commission acknowledged the pros of the plan — there would be no “NIMBY” reaction as single-family homes already exist in neighborhoods.

And whatever the county might offer in payment to extend a deed restriction would likely be cheaper than acquiring land and building a new home.

County administrator Roman Gastesi said there might be a small percentage of homeowners interested in such a deal.

“We don’t know the homeowners’ mindset. There might be a few,” he said. “This is a tangible maybe.”

The commission instructed Santamaria to identify the deed-restricted homes with at least 15 years left on the affordable designation and to work with an appraiser to develop a fair calculation of value.

Independence Day celebrations already set • KEY WEST: Since 1976, the Rotary Club of Key West has presented the island’s annual fireworks show on the Fourth of July. Staged from the Edward B. Knight Pier (formerly called White Street Pier), fireworks are to begin at 9 p.m. Best viewing from Higgs Beach, Smathers Beach.

• MARATHON: Hosted by Marathon Rotary Club, the Fourth of July fireworks are ignited at Sombrero Beach.

Best viewing is from the sandy shore, or anchored just outside the swimming area. Show, simulcast on local radio station, begins about 9 p.m.

Get off the beaten trails The National Key Deer Refuge begins its rangerguided “Summer Nights Adventure Program” at the end of this month. Visitors and locals are welcome at these free, kid-friendly, nature-oriented walks and bike rides. Meet at the Refuge Visitor Center, (179 Key Deer Blvd in Winn Dixie Plaza, on Big Pine Key).

Beat the heat with the fire department Monroe County Fire Rescue is hosting a series of “Beat the heat” events for children this summer. Firefighters will provide a gentle stream of misting water for kids of all ages to enjoy in a safe and fun environment. It is a great way to meet your neighborhood firefighters and cool off from the summer sun. Children are encouraged to wear bathing suits and tennis shoes or sneakers. They also should bring towels.

ANTHONY PICONE

F

or the last six years, Anthony Picone has been entertaining music lovers in Key West with both his band and solo performances. Picone has just finished his second solo CD, “Change the Resolution.” Besides singing all the vocals and playing most of the instruments, this multi talented musician wrote, engineered and produced the entire CD by himself. Describing his songs as “soulful rock,” fellow Key West musicians Ericson Holt and Rolando Rojas recorded additional keyboard tracks, and Nate Laguzza from Los Angeles recorded the drum tracks.

“I really enjoy playing live most, the interaction with the crowd more than recording, but I do enjoy the creative aspect of the recording process. Recording CDs is about getting my name out as a songwriter and provides an additional opportunity for film soundtracks. I am grateful to the local radio DJs for playing my songs on the radio.”

Picone took lessons as a kid, but is mostly self-taught. He attended music college but dropped out because of boredom in order to play in bands. His music influences are mainly

rock and folk bands from the ’60s and ’70s – the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and the Allman Brothers.

Picone visited Key West in 2002 for a couple of days, “loved the vibe,” and returned in 2011 deciding to make Key West his home after playing Sloppy Joe’s. “I love being able to play music every day of the week, with different musicians and meeting people from all over the world. With all this music Key West’s music environment is very conducive to writing.”

While many regular performers leave for the summer season, Picone is staying in Key West. As one of the busiest performers in town, his steady gigs include the Blue Macaw on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m., the Party Cat boat Sundays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and the Gates Hotel Rum Row, Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. He also performs randomly at Blue Heaven, Island Dogs, Conch Farm (Conch Republic Seafood Co.), Hogfish, Sloppy Joe’s, and Margaritaville.

In a typical week, Anthony plays six to seven gigs. He performs mainly by himself and his guitar, but is assembling a band to do all original material.

essica Bowman came to visit Key West from London a year ago and stayed at The Saint Hotel. Now, she lives here and bartends at the Burgundy Bar at the hotel. Her signature cocktail: Hemingway’s Mistress.

The cocktail is made with locally distilled Papa’s Pilar Blonde Rum, apricot brandy, ginger liqueur, fresh squeezed lemon juice and an egg white and then is topped with orange bitters. “It was designed when the distillery opened and it’s really tasty,” she said.

She said her favorite part about working at The Saint’s bar is the real family unit she has with not only her fellow bartenders, but also with the locals. “It’s a fun vibe here,” she said. “We get to experiment with a lot of cool flavors.

People come here for the theatrics, to have good drinks, not get drunk.”

Another fun thing is their ever-changing happy hour menu that takes place from 4:17 to 7:14 p.m. This summer they are doing $10 dinners during that time.

When she isn’t working four nights a week and Saturday mornings, she’s at the gym or fishing with her husband Billie. “I’m a dinner and movie kind of girl,” she said. “And, we are so lucky because there are so many great restaurants in Key West.”

evan Ashe just graduated from Key West High School, and she said it would have been a more difficult accomplishment if it weren’t for her mentor, Kuniko “Niko” Keohane, a veteran Key West Police Department officer.

Ashe was one of the first four graduates from the pilot mentorship program Kids Win: Path to Success put on by Keys to Be the Change. The program pairs at-risk students with police officers, military members, or volunteers from the state attorney’s office. Heidi Golightly of Keys to Be the Change, a Keyswide non-profit that helps empower youth, says pairing the students with prominent Key West leaders helps the students graduate on time and builds self-confidence and self-esteem.

“I was really slacking off in school when they assigned me to her,” said Ashe. “Niko kept me in line and motivated me to do better. I know I wouldn’t have cared as much if it weren’t for her.”

The two met weekly during lunch.

When Keohane started meeting with Ashe, she was a quiet ninth grader having issues adjusting to her new school, new community, and new home life.

After being enrolled at the PACE girls school, by her senior year Ashe was back with her classmates at Key West High School. Now, she is enrolling at Florida Keys Community College and working as a teacher’s aide and is looking forward to working on a degree to be a teacher.

“I am taking a year off the mentorship program to help Devan look for scholarships and enroll in college,” said Keohane, who now sees Ashe as a daughter-figure. “My goal is to make sure she continues to stay on track.”

Keohane said the other officers involved in the program put their whole hearts into it, too. “We talk about our students a lot; we want them to succeed and we help each other out,” she said. “Programs like this have a huge effect on the kids.”

ew performers can turn a night of karaoke into a successful career in show business, but Dan Finnerty pulled it off. You might know Finnerty and his comedic musical group, The Dan Band, from their scene stealing appearance in the iconic comedy “Old School,” but that performance is a sliver of a remarkable story.

In advance of The Dan Band’s July 1st shows at the Key West Theater, we caught up with foul-mouthed lead singer (and incredibly nice guy) to discuss grown men performing female-power anthems, being in the right place at the right time, and how drunkenly singing “I Am Woman” can change your life.

Keys Weekly: So, I heard you were a cast member of Stomp?

DF: I was living in New York, trying out for things, and one day as a joke, I got in line for a Stomp audition. It was after a bad callback for another Broadway show and I saw the line and thought, “Well, I’m out and already took a shower.”

KW: Sometimes it helps to not take things too seriously.

DF: This whole girl song thing started as a joke, too. In New York I sang “I Am Woman” at karaoke and thought it was really funny. When I moved to L.A. a friend of mine needed someone to open for her to make it look like she was headlining saying, “Just sing anything, it doesn’t matter.”

KW: And that led to more gigs?

DF: The guy who books the Viper Room happened to be there and he started booking me. Then, later on, I started playing at Largo.

KW: This all leads up to the Bravo network special you had in 2005, right?

DF: At one point after the show my wife came backstage and said Steven Spielberg is here to see you. (Laughing) And I was like, “good one.”

KW: THE Steven Spielberg?

DF: Yeah, it was that one. He came up and said (sincere voice), “My wife and I loved the movie ‘Old School’ because my company Dream Works produced it … and he’s like going down his resume. I said, “I know your work, man. I could probably help you out.”

KW: Watching your live show, I was struck by the eclectic audience.

DF: At first, the more popular it got, the girls would be dragging their boyfriends who would just get drunk enough to out themselves for knowing every word of these songs. But then once the movies came out it turned into guys dragging their girlfriends to the show.

KW: I was also surprised how little the show is like your rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in “Old School.”

DF: It’s funny, because “Total Eclipse” is the least entertaining song in the whole show.

KW: Have you gone all rock star yet and refused to play it?

DF: Oh no, I’m a whore. One time they asked us to do it again, and I was like, “Okay.” I didn’t care.

It was some private party at the Playboy mansion, all these sad Wall Street guys who by midnight were disillusioned that it wasn’t going to be this free sex party.

KW: Was working on those movies as much fun as it looked?

DF: It was awesome, especially “Old School.” Todd Phillips said I’m doing this scene and it just says, “Wedding singer sings.” What would you sing at a wedding?

KW: And next thing you’re changing “Total Eclipse” forever?

DF: Todd said, “Wait, are you going to say fuck like you do in your show? And I was like, can I? And he’s like, ‘fuck yeah.’ And I’m like, ‘well fucking buckle up.’”

KW: What’s next for you and the Dan Band?

DF: I’m working on a one-man show that I wrote about growing up and it’ll debut early next winter.

We’re doing it at a theater outside of Boston and then hope to bring it to New York.

KW: The title?

DF: (Laughing) It’s called “Little Orphan Danny” because I was adopted. It’s all about growing up in a small farm town, and finding my birth mother, and working that out with my mom. It is a comedy, but it gets tender in the middle.”

KW: Ever been to Key West?

DF: No, I haven’t. And at first I didn’t have the right visual in my head, but when I realized where it actually is and what it looks like, I thought, “This is awesome.” We’re very excited, and I really hope people come out and have a good time.

hef Lori Shubert filed for a patent for her remarkable Cupcake Sushi in 2013 and now, four years later, she has it. It is an understatement to say Shubert is thrilled. “How often can you make something completely original and brand new?” said Shubert. Honestly, not that often.

“The second I thought of doing this and then saw the reaction of people, I knew, I just knew I had to patent it.” Shubert, who previously worked as a caterer, business owner and baker in Boston, was challenged to minimize the original cupcake size.

Trying to shrink a cupcake into a bite-sized delectable, she thought of people’s love of small bites of sushi and the idea was launched.

The passion she has for her product cannot be put in a measuring cup. Centrally located downtown, she is managing all the business including baking, re-

tail and catering in order to build Cupcake Sushi’s exposure: “I am always listening for opportunities to expand my brand.” Every day is a frenzy of baking and selling Cupcake Sushi to locals, visitors, hosting events, and mailing it world wide.

Shubert loves Lori Shubert that Key West isn’t always what it seems, like her sushi, “They both are colorful, mysterious and a little bit confusing.”

Every day Shubert fields the question whether or not her cupcakes have fish in them (a resounding “No!”) but her patent is specific to the appearance of the dessert. Cupcake Sushi is the perfect morsel of buttercream and

Price matches 1963 debut: five bucks

I

n 1963, when Kirk Douglas first walked onto Broadway’s Cort Theater stage to play lovable rogue Randall P. McMurphy in the new play “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,” stage-center orchestra seats were considered some of the most expensive ever seen on the Great White Way. Those top-flight tickets went for the then-towering price of five dollars. No kidding.

Playwright/actor/director Bob Bowersox and his TheatreXP – producers of Key West’s now iconic Summer Stage events every July – were looking for a way to say thank you for the seven years of support theater lovers have given Summer Stage since its inception in 2011. They also knew they wanted “Cuckoo’s Nest” as their mainstage event this year.

“When we saw the 1963 price during our research on the play, we immediately said, ‘We have to do that! Let’s take it all back to 1963, including the price!’” said Bowersox.

‘CUCKOO’S NEST’ OPENS SUMMER STAGE Which is exactly what they’ve done. His arch-nemesis, Nurse Ratched, will be played by Melody G. Moore, who has distinguished herself in a number of recent shows, including “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” “Person of Interest,” “The Poetry of Hearts,” “The Return” and “The Apple Falls”.

Supporting these two are a mix of the area’s favorite actors and new faces: Erica Lee Bigelow (Nurse Flinn), Phillip Cole White (Billy Bibbit), Jeremy P. Hyatt (Martini), Matt Hollis Hulsey (Williams), Tony Konrath (Dr. Spivey), Mathias Maloff (Turkle), John McDonald (Cheswick), Lisa Elena Monda (Candy), L. John Van Norden (Ruckly), Karl M. Stahl (Chief Bromden), and Bowersox himself (Harding).

Directing will be Patrick New, a Chicago native whose credits include work at Steppenwolf, Goodman, Looking Glass, and Roundabout theaters, among many others. New and Bowersox met at a Shakespeare seminar two years ago, and have been looking for a project to do together.

t’s hard not to be nostalgic and wounded by the first love of youth.

Local filmmaker Quincy Perkins drew from that familiar and shared experience with his latest movie, “Love In Youth,” set and filmed in Key West.

Perkins wrote the screenplay years ago but just in the last eight months shot and edited it in preparation for the Telluride Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. “Love in Youth” is a story about two kids in their late teens on the cusp of adulthood and navigating the uneasy waters of first love. The film is both reminiscent of the excitement of young love but also the pain of its disappointment, as the characters Heather, played by Heather Devoe, and Eric, played by Ricardo Montero, begin a relationship and utterly fail to keep it.

Perkins’ genius was using two Key West high schoolers, Devoe and Montero, both 17, who had never acted before and barely knew one another having shared just one class at Key West High. Their innocence and naiveté is so honest and blatant, it falls naturally from the screen enhancing the notion of their first love.

“This was something I wanted to tell,” said Perkins, who admitted it was based on his own experiences. “It’s

about teen love, it’s messy and really about the power struggle of the relationship.” The majority of the movie is focused on Heather and her crush on Eric as she continually attempts to define their relationship. The screen is in love with Devoe, as she is captivating portraying the innocence and guardedness of young girls. Meanwhile, Eric exemplifies the stereotyped guy, noncommittal and deceitful. Heather threatens Eric to be more honest, a common theme in any relationship, young or old.

Montero, who plays Eric, said, “My character was difficult. He’s not like me, I’m fun and outgoing.”

Perkins’s private showing took place last Monday at the Key West Theater to a packed house of proud local extras, parents and sponsors. More than 50 businesses helped to put the film together, including producers Commissioner Sam Kaufman and his wife, Julia.

“Quincy is an extremely talented young artist and Julia and I did not hesitate upon learning of the opportunity to work with him,” said Sam Kaufman.

With regard to filming and premiering in Key West, “This will always be home, so who cares about Sundance,” joked Perkins. His short film “Swingers Anonymous” was accepted to the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

MARC RECEIVES CFFK GRANT Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens was awarded $4,000 by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys through its 2017 grant program. The grant will support “ReMARCable Dinner Among the Flowers,” showcasing the culinary skills of about 15 developmentally disabled clients from the MARC Rainbow Café.

The project will include the preparation and service of 50 five-course meals, served outdoors and open to the community. The grant program is funded through donations made to the Future Fund at CFFK as well as four field of interest funds at CFFK which support arts and culture in the Keys. A

quick phone call from Paddle the Florida Keys’ owner Scott Baste, and the plans for my first stand-up paddleboard trip are finally set. I’ve seen the popularity of stand-up paddling grow, but never tried it myself. Until today.

I’m no stranger to the mangroves or board sports, and because I figure if I was going to be eaten by an alligator, it would have happened by now, I’m not too concerned with peril. But it is obvious, in the world of paddling, I am a noob.

I have a bit of a learning curve to overcome, I think to myself as I walk across the wooden docks behind the paddle shop’s Tavernier Creek location. The sunset eco-tour is slated for two hours, and I don’t really know how my rickety bad back would hold up. “You’ll do fine,” says Andrea Burris, another guest on the tour (and excellent stand-in photographer). I believe her.

Before leaving the dock, paddle guru Scott gives me a quick rundown on how to maneuver the board. I hop on mine, legs wobbling, and shuffle for a moment before my weight centers. I paddle around a bit before I get the hang of it. Good to go. We’re off.

First time for everything Newbie takes on paddleboarding

We push off as a small group of paddlers and one canoe, and make our way toward Tavernier Creek Bridge. Most in the group have been on the tour before and know the deal.

The current is ripping through the middle of the creek, so Scott leads the group to the outer edges for a smoother ride. I paddle ahead into the still waters just in time to see snapper and barracuda darting around underneath my feet.

Just downstream, the group turns the bend and heads for the “mangrove tunnels.”

As we get to our destination, I make a mistake. Miscalculating a shift in my weight, I slide left and fall in.

The group giggles for a moment, and teases that I wanted to “cool off.” Seeing as the last of my dignity is now at the bottom of Tavernier Creek, I shake it off and hop back on.

The “tunnels” begin as a small opening in the mangroves, then become as eerie as they are narrow the further you advance. Stretches of mangrove branches form a canopy that eventually becomes so low, it requires me to sit on my board and pull myself through. “This is pretty cool,” I randomly blurt out in my excitement.

After a little exploring in the mangroves, it’s time to head back. But now we have to paddle against the current.

Scott tells us about a group of paddlers he had to rescue from the current earlier, so we listen when he tells us to stay close to the mangroves. The journey back is bit more challenging, but I use the opportunity as a chance to try my amateur race skills. Sore and tired, I pull myself up to the floating dock ready to go home, but not until I fall in one last time — for good measure.

FKCC launches renewable energy tech program

T

he application process is now open for Florida Keys Community College’s latest degree addition, an Associate in Science (A.S.) in Engineering Technology: Renewable Energy Technician. The two-year degree provides a broad, versatile foundation in engineering, plus specialized career training for fastgrowing, high paying careers in solar, wind and hydropower technologies. Students will benefit from real-world practice in professional internships at partnering organizations that are located as near as Stock Island and as far away as Australia.

New students are required to apply by Aug. 3 in order to begin classes this fall semester, which begins Aug. 18. Scholarships and payment plans are available. ith 100-year-old mango and avocado trees on the Little White House property, Grimal Grove founder Patrick Garvey said it was a no-brainer picking a Key West spot for this year’s Tropical Fruit Fiesta.

Going into its third year, the event is moving its roots to The Little White House to bring the Big Pine Key grove a little more attention.

“This is the best way to grow the tropical fruit culture,” he said. “Take it on the road.”

In partnership with the University of Florida’s Monroe County Extension, the event started in the ’90s and then took a hiatus after eight years. It was brought back to Grimal Grove a few summers ago and has continued to grow in popularity with locals.

“This is a great way to bring more visibility to the grove,” said Garvey, who founded The Growing Hope Initiative in 2011 and bought Grimal Grove in 2013.

The grove, established in 1955 by horticulturalist Adolph Grimal, fell into near-disrepair after Grimal’s death and Hurricane Georges. What was once a tropical fruit oasis with exotic trees, some found in the United States only at the grove, was overrun with invasive plants until Garvey saw the diamond in the rough.

He received his award in Naples at the USPTA Florida Conference earlier this month. Over the past year Brock has started many new tennis play opportunities for juniors and adults throughout the Keys — among them the first ever USTA Women’s League in Monroe County with teams from Ocean Reef, Islamorada and Key West.

Summer stuff at Key West library A free five-week summer reading program for kids will take place on Saturdays starting June 24 at 1 p.m. The library also encourages children to pick up a reading log for prizes.

Fiscal budget discussed at meeting The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has begun its public meetings and hearings regarding the Fiscal Year 2018 budget.

The remaining public budget meeting schedule includes: • July 25 at 10 a.m. at Harvey Government Center in Key West.

This special meeting is for discussion of the budget and capital improvement plan and the announcement of the proposed millage rate.

• Sept. 5 at 5:05 p.m. at Murray Nelson Government Center, Key Largo. The first public hearing and adoption of the tentative budget and millage rate.

• Sept. 7 at 5:05 p.m. at Marathon Government Center. A special budget meeting, which is not required but done as a public service.

Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS) a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence has the following open positions:

Domestic Violence Primary Prevention/Outreach Advocate (Full Time)

This is a non-degreed position. The purpose of the primary prevention program is to deliver prevention education and awareness to the targeted youth population by delivering a series of educational classes in the class room as well as at community events while creating a coordinated community to respond to intimate partner violence in an effort to reduce, better respond to and eliminate it. Additional responsibilities include Direct Service provision to domestic violence survivors in Outreach locations. The work schedule is primarily M-F 8-5 with some weekends and evenings, but candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups and possess excellent organizational skills. Those who identify as survivors of violence or abuse are encouraged to apply.

Domestic Violence Advocates

The Domestic Abuse shelter has an opening for FT and PT Advocates. Advocates provide coverage of a 24-hour shelter and hotline, advocacy in criminal and civil justice systems, and safety planning with survivors of domestic violence.
