For most young boys and girls, Dad is their first superhero. Everything he does is seemingly amazing. Even the most mundane things can stir wonderment. It’s a dad’s job in particular to teach his kids “guy stuff,” like how to work with tools, yell at sports on the TV, and how to tell funny one-liners — commonly referred to as Dad jokes. The world is a better place because of the unconditional love a father gives to his kids. With every year that passes, and little boys and girls become their own person, there is always a little bit of a father’s qualities that linger. So the Weekly asked…

How are you just like dad?

“In every way. Some quick examples would be we like all the same things, go through the same stages, and have most of the same advantages and disadvantages.

We’re both into board sports — he teaches it and I’m still learning,” Cody Walsh.

Dominic Gonzalez said, “We’re both very competitive, we both watch soccer together and root for Spain. We both are goalies. Oh, and we both also like to hang out at the sandbar.”

arold Wheeler, the longtime director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, has announced plans to retire in late September.

Wheeler has guided TDC since April 1996.

ey Largo native Chris Sante has spent the majority of his life as a Keys resident, first as a citizen, then as an elected official. After being first elected to the Islamorada village council in March 2002, Sante served as mayor of the village from 2003 to 2004, 2004 to 2005, and 2006 to 2007. He took a brief break from public service, returned and is now acting vice mayor until December. Sante has worn many hats throughout his years, including more than 30 years developing real estate and mortgage lending in the Keys, and has become heavily invested in the community. His resume includes president of Leadership Monroe, treasurer of the Florida Keys Business Association, board member of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, president of Key Largo’s Lions Club, and Rotary Club member.

A lot has changed since you were elected to the second-ever village council. What’s changed the most since then? The previous councils had to deal with the big issue of sewers. Now that that’s over we’re dealing with development issues. Going forward, our issues are going to involve infrastructure.

Why do you have hundreds of gnomes lining the shelves in your office? When we were kids we used to go around and steal something from the bars and houses, take it home, take Polaroid pictures with the item, and then return it. So with that being said, I had a house next to the high school at one point.

I bought three gnomes and attached nametags so others could do the same thing. Of the three, I only had one come back. Once people started hearing about the gnomes missing they started sending me gnomes. So when I come to work I find them in the flower bed, I find them in the mail, or I’ll go places and people hand them to me.

INVESTMENT IN INVOLVEMENT WITH CHRIS SANTE

What capital improvements would you like to see happen in the village in the next 20 years?

I’d like to see a concentrated effort in evaluating the low-lying areas due to global warming. I’d like to see a long term plan. I think the infrastructure has to be elevated in anticipation of rising water and storm conditions.

What are the biggest pests in the Keys? Tourists. Haha. Only kidding — probably iguanas. But here’s the scientific answer — pests’ frequency are cyclic. This year it may be rats, next year it may be fleas and ticks, then it might be roaches. But bedbugs are probably the hardest to get rid of.

If you were given the opportunity to build your dream home in the Keys, where would you build it and how would it look?

I would love to have a small bayfront home in the Upper Keys.

With a small pool, and a Key West style to it.

What are the top three lessons you’ve learned in your years of public service? I wish I would have started younger in public service. You have to have tough skin because there is always someone mad at you regardless of how you vote. And finally, that I enjoy being able to help the public.

What’s the most challenging part of representing the citizens of Islamorada on the village council? The most challenging is having to vote on items that you think are correct and trying to make the public and council members understand your position on the issue.

Have any hidden talents? I have a green thumb. I really like growing orchids. I have orchids and I have probably like 20 giant staghorn.

‘I wish I would have started younger’ As a former mortgage lender, what would you say are the biggest obstacles working class families face when trying to finance their homes?

The problem is the wages of working people are not equal to the cost of housing, and by that I mean one week’s income is supposed to be your house payment. But here it’s two or two and a half times more. Wages paid are too low to afford a home down here; you need at least two incomes to purchase a home.

As a past president of Leadership Monroe, which class project in recent memory has been a favorite?

Well, each class does what’s important to them, but I would say the project I liked best was after Henry Woods unfortunately passed away during their class. Class XVIII established a scholarship in his name to pay for members to join Leadership Monroe.

What home design feature makes a good home a great home? A family.

How are you just like your Dad? I’m a hard worker. He had good business sense, and that’s what I’m carrying on, and my son and daughter are too.

How are each of your kids just like you? My son looks like the spitting image of me and acts like my wife. My daughter is a spitting image of my wife but acts like me.

So it makes for fun times. They’re both doing extremely well and I’m proud.

Dad to Nicholas and Garret, Bell has had a blast experiencing fatherhood.

“It’s really awesome. I think I was very blessed to have parents that allowed me to diversify my life and have amazing life experiences together. And now, I get to have that with my kids,” said Bell. “It’s fun to pour into them my experiences and watching them grow with their own experiences.”

He looks to his father, who he says had a strong family-first mentality, as a good example of how he wants to raise his kids. Bell shares a strong sense of curiosity for the world with his two boys.

“I love the fact that they are willing to try new things. They go out and experience for themselves, and sometimes it works and sometimes it’s a big flop. But I think the biggest waste of time would be sitting around and not experiencing anything at all. The desire they both have to play and have fun is what makes me happy. You only have so many opportunities in life to do that kind of stuff.”

Trentine became a father just over a year ago when he and his wife, Whitney, welcomed their son Turk into their lives. He recalls getting the news he was going to be a dad the day after Valentine’s Day. Having a son has taught him to not sweat the small things in life.

“I try to spend as much time as possible with my son and wife,” he said.

“It definitely puts a different perspective of what your parents went through for you, and how much raising a kid entails. And how much they sacrifice to make sure you were raised right,” said Trentine.

A Keys native, Trentine plans on raising his son right where he grew up.

“It’s an extraordinary place that we’re fortunate enough to live, work, and play at,” he said.

In the future, he’s looking forward to teaching him all the things he loves, like boating, fishing, diving, about the environment, and what it means to live in a community where everybody knows everybody and watches after each other.

FATHER’S DAY

JACK NIEDBALSKI, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF THE UPPER KEYS Roughly 32 years ago, Niedbalski welcomed his oldest, Kellee, into his life. That’s when he realized things were going to be a little different.

“I remember getting really serious about my career and making a good living to support the family; obviously I was excited, and that’s never changed, but when you know you have a baby coming it hits you.”

Niedbalski soon welcomed his middle child, Michael, and finally Jake.

His three babies have grown up now and are spread across the country making their dreams come true in Nashville, Tampa and Orlando.

His youngest, Jake, is a senior studying business management at the University of Central Florida, and enrolled in Air Force ROTC. Currently, he’s on track to attend Air Force pilot training, and Niedbalski is extremely proud.

Some of the lessons he’s passed on from his own dad are the values of hard work, discipline, dedication and overcoming adversity.

Niedbalski says the family enjoys heading out west for vacation to Colorado and Utah to ski. But when they are in Florida, they go diving together.

Hampson first found he was going to be a daddy while on shift at the fire station. Elaine was so excited, she sent him a picture of the pregnancy test.

She then gifted his parents a pacifier as a way to reveal the good news.

Elaine is now seven months along with their first son, Bryson. The two are still deciding on his middle name.

“I’m just excited to have a kid, boy or girl. I’ve always wanted to be a dad so it’s a blessing,” said Hampson. “I want to raise my son with love and support, be a friend, and the person he becomes — I’ll be proud of.”

He plans on using plenty of his dad’s wisdom and advice.

“My dad has always raised my brother and I to be good to everybody.

He always said if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all and to give 110 percent effort in everything you do,” said Hampson.

ROBERTO ALONSO, BORLAND & ASSOCIATES INSURANCE Alonso’s daughter Ana Lidia and husband Luis Cabrera have blessed him with two grandkids, Christopher and Sofia.

His son, Roberto Carlos and his wife, Kristina, have given him three, Isabela, Alexandra, and Gabriela.

“All three are cheerleaders, and Gabriela made the All-Dade County team,” said Alonso.

Now a grandfather, Alonso feels lucky to have such a close family.

“It’s a blessing so many times over.

Our life has always been around them, being involved in their lives and watching them become excellent people.

They are well loved and well liked in all their respective professions and careers.”

Alonso has always seen the news of becoming a dad as a turning point in his life.

“I was studying for my degree in political science at Florida Atlantic University at Boca Raton; the news knocked me on behind. My daughter would become the apple of eye. I kept studying and it brought a lot of joy to me. I was able to get very good job out of college and have been in the profession since. It was one of the defining moments in my life.”

MICHAEL TRUONG, THE KEY THAI & SUSHI “When I found that my girlfriend at the time was pregnant I was pretty scared. I mean I was young and still trying to figure out my life and here I was about to be a father. It was definitely not planned,” said Truong. “My daughter was born in November 2014; I was 20 years old and still in college. I had to adjust my life and lifestyle, preparing for a human to come into the world. It was not an easy task, but overall it was a true life learning experience.”

Truong said his dad always worked hard just so he could have a better life.

Truong says he just wants to teach his daughter to work hard for the life she would like to live one day, whatever that may be.

“When my daughter is a little older, I’d like to take her across the world to where my family is from. Just to teach her about the culture and how different it is than the states. I’d also like to teach her about art and music because I’m into those things,” he said.

PETER GOMEZ, THE PRO COMPUTERS Peter, left, puts his arm around his “mini-me,” Peter Jr. Gomez first became a dad in 1996, and then again in 2000. Fast forward two decades and his babies, Christina and Peter Jr., are nearly grown up.

When he first became a dad he recalls falling head over heels for his daughter. “I fell in love with my kid right away; when my daughter came out I thought she was the most beautiful thing in the world,” said Gomez. “It also made me get closer with my own parents.”

Gomez now enjoys spending time with his kids at his parents’ house and barbecuing Churrasco. One of his favorite things to do with his kids is bowling. He used to let them win, but now that they are older, he makes them work for it.

“It’s the most wonderful thing in the world having kids — always fun and always changing,” said Gomez. “It made me a better human being and made me realize the endless love you get and give with kids. They bring me a lot of joy.”

Staffer takes a trip waaaaay offshore for the big catch

“Y

ou’re going to want to bring something to sleep on,” my brother Chase said as I threw together a weekend bag with a couple bathing suits, a blanket and sunscreen.

“Like a beanbag?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said “Get in the truck, they are waiting on us.”

My speargun, dive gear and Sudafed were already by the door waiting to head out on commercial diver and fisherman Capt. Johnny B.’s 43-foot Alexis M. By 10:30 p.m. we were on our 120-mile, 10-hour journey to “the spots.” I lost cell phone service after an hour, and set about arranging my sleeping quarters in the fresh air … on top of the icebox. (I later moved after I discovered it also served as the chum preparation area.)

“Don’t fall in. And tell someone when you have to pee,” Chase said.

“If you go over in the middle of the night, no one will ever know.”

The night featured shrimp boats littered on the horizon 60 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. We stopped at 4:30 a.m. to catch bait and I saw the four guys on the Alexis M. move around the boat the way I imagine bees and ants collaborate: no talking, just work. My job description was easy: “stay the (expletive deleted) out of the way.”

At 7 a.m. I took over the helm while the others slept. My new job description included “don’t run into anything and wake me up if the boat falls off the purple line.” This is when the magic happened. While everyone was dead asleep, hundreds of dolphins showed up – little tiny baby Gulf dolphins, not the huge Dolphin Research Center Atlantic bottlenose ones I’m used to seeing off the Keys. The sun barely up, I sat in the propped open window in the front of the boat, quietly, being the most excited person in the world.

We spent the first day diving deep wrecks. Chase’s explanation of the first one (I think he was joking, but I’m not sure): “There’s still dead people in it; I wouldn’t look inside if I were you.” His explanation of the second dive: “The thing is falling apart; do not go inside for any reason whatsoever.”

That night we went after snapper. It was probably the best rodand-reel fishing experience of my life. Drop line in, reel up big fish.

Diving Museum hosts shipwreck talk Marine archaeologist Robert F. Westrick will discuss the history of shipwrecks in Florida on Wednesday, June 21, at 7 p.m. at the History of Diving Museum, 82990 Overseas Highway, Islamorada.

Westrick has more than 25 years invested in shipwreck projects wherein he has been able to track and preserve history and its artifacts.

Just off of Little Conch Reef rests El Infante, a 1733 Spanish treasure galleon that had the ill-fated fortune of running into a hurricane. Westrick spent innumerable hours on documentation and research of the El Infante and found other equally historic shipwrecks that succumbed to tumultuous weather More information is at keylargochamber.org and at divingmuseum. org.

I slept – I use that word loosely – in the beanbag again and woke at the break of dawn for more diving. The second day we dove another wreck (with a wall of 5-foot barracudas protecting it), then dove a tower (only a hammerhead and bull shark), and then shallow stuff in 40 feet. In the shallows, Chase gave me a hug underwater and renamed me the “hogfish whisperer” back at the boat.

the fish from the day. We showered in the hose in the back of the boat and made it to the That’s What She Shot Spearfishing Tournament weigh-in with 30 minutes to spare. Our boat swept the men’s scuba division with first and second place. And I came home with awesome stories to tell my kiddos. Summer, my 9-year-old, said she’s ready for a commercial trip with Uncle Chase very soon.

Tale of Key West is Historical Trust topic The Matecumbe Historical Trust will host this month’s free presentation on Monday, June 19th at 6:30 p.m. at Island Community Church, 83250 Overseas Highway, Islamorada.

Michael Shields will present “Key West: Bohemia in the Tropics,” produced by Timothy Long. This is an account of a largely unknown story of how a radical community-building experiment during the Great Depression led to the laid-back, anything-goes lifestyle of today’s Key West.

The film opens during the darkest days of the Great Depression and goes on to explore how Key West, once the richest city in the nation, was forced to turn itself over to federal bureaucrats and accept a future forever tied to tourism. It features some of the country’s preeminent poets and writers, including Wallace Stevens and Ernest Hemingway, who “discover” Key West in the 1920s and are outraged by the transformation of “their” sleepy little island.

t was the fresh citrus and elevated fertile lands of North Key Largo that earned Garden Cove its name. The waterfront bay was a destination for pirates and sailors who would arrive to purchase fruits high in vitamin C to prevent scurvy. Back in those times, early Keys farmers shared the higher ground with local Seminole Indians. In the Seminole language, higher ground translates to Wachula — which means Buzzard’s Roost. And thus, the legend of the Buzzard’s Roost was born.

Upon opening the menu, the variety of choice is notable. For appetizers, the jumbo buzzard wings with choice of chipotle, teriyaki, or buffalo sauce and the meaty award-winning Texas style chili are tasty starters. If a craving for fresh seafood needs satisfying, try the smoked fish dip or coconut shrimp.

Some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes are its fish tacos, ceviche, and tasty lobster Reuben — which is prepared with sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, and Swiss cheese on rye.

Entrees, like the catch of the day, can be grilled, blackened, Jamaican jerked, broiled or fried. The Buzzard’s Roost also offers its own signature “Bert Style,” which has filets sautéed in lemon butter with tomatoes, scallions, and shaved parmesan cheese. Another favorite, the Buzzard seafood pasta, has sautéed lobster, scallops, and shrimp in garlic and white wine sauce served over linguini.

If your taste buds are land lovers, try one of their black angus steaks —including the filet mignon, New York strip steak, and ribeye.

All steaks come with option of béarnaise, port wine demi, maitre d’ butter sauce, or bleu cheese crumbles.

The biggest reason the entrees of the Buzzard’s Roost are so delicious is that the core of the kitchen crew has been together for several years. All entrees are accompanied by salad, soup of the day, fresh vegetables, and choice of rice, fries, or baked potato.

The waterfront patio seats guest at the foot of a canal which holds a rich history filled with colorful characters – both real and fictional.

Life at the Roost isn’t too rough on the Buzzards.

The legacy of Garden Cove has grown considerably since the days of pirates, and that’s thanks in large part to the restaurant’s cameos throughout the Netflix series “Bloodline,” which wrapped the filming of its final season this spring. For years the cast of the show has eaten at the Buzzard’s Roost and, before leaving, took time to drop by and thank the staff and tell them how much they enjoyed filming in the Keys.

Flags receive final honors

n June 14, Elks Lodge 1872 hosted Flag Day and flag retirement ceremonies.

Officers of the lodge read a history of how the United States adopted its colors. Before the retirement, area first responders, Boy and Girl Scouts, and community members joined together outside to prepare the flags. Retired flags are folded and ceremoniously burned to ashes. Boy Scouts from Troop 912 led the retirement ceremony, honoring dozens of flags, before inviting the public at large to join the solemn occasion. ohn David Hawver grew up in Hollywood, Florida surfing, sailing, diving and boating. Hawver’s mother saw her son’s talent in art at a young age and encouraged him to paint. His first memories of loving art came after he began to learn about the works of greats like Leonardo Da Vinci. In grade school, his teachers suggested he paint portraits. He would go on to graduate from the University of Florida and, later, the University of Miami’s fine arts master’s program.

After working for a number of years in commercial and magazine art, Hawver now dedicates his creativity to forming breathtaking seascape and

scenery works. His use of fresh pleasing colors creates realistic depth and serenity.

Hawver’s masterpieces begin when he grabs his camera and searches for locales worth recreating. Once he has a collection of images, he sits and begins his process. While some artist begin with light or dark colors and build from there, Hawver’s technique requires he lay down both light and dark hues all at once.

“It’s a long process of under painting opposite

colors in broken brush strokes. That way, the background color is brought up and your eye ends up mixing the colors,” he said.

Aside from landscapes and scenes, Hawver has begun to create artsy collage prints of various paintings.

Inside his home studio he’s installed a full size printer capable of producing various print sizes. His prints range in price from $25 to $250. His canvas prints and originals range from $60 to $1,500.

Though he has won multiple awards since the late 1960s, Hawver said the 8- by 10-foot commissioned painting in the Murray Nelson Government Center for Monroe County Art in Public Places is his biggest accomplishment so far. He also has paintings on display at the Mariners Hospital Tassel Medical Arts Building, Bumby’s, and at Monroe County sheriff’s office. Hawver is in the process of looking for gallery space, but for now, the bulk of his work is available at Art on a Whim Gallery located within the Rain Barrel property at MM 86.7.

“It’s Brady — Chris Brady, as in the bunch, not the cheater,” he said.

Originally from San Diego, Brady’s first day ever in Florida was on May 13. Two days later he started at the brewery. He’s acclimating nicely.

“The weather is nice. It’s great, after 18 years, I’m back on the water after a long absence working in the Rockies and Sierras,” he said.

When he finds himself on the other side of the bar, he’s usually drinking some type of draft beer, but if not, he’s having a whiskey ginger or a shot of tequila straight up.

This Father’s Day he’ll be a little farther than usual from his pops, but he still plans on giving him a ring.

“We’re so alike it’s terrible.

We’re both hard working Irish men, the type that put their head down and get things done. Whining won’t get you anywhere, so it’s definitely the work ethic.”

In his free time Brady does stand up paddle boarding and is getting back into diving and fishing.
