n Wednesday morning, Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey drafted a letter to the Monroe County School Board asking it to build a pool on the Marathon Manor property it owns adjacent to the high school. This comes on the heels of the news that the school district is developing plans for athletic fields, a track and parking that may consume all of the available space.

Councilman John Bartus broached the matter on Tuesday at the Marathon City Council meeting.

“We have never officially asked for their opinion on using that property for a pool. If we don’t start this dialogue, start this process, we will lose it,” he said.

Councilman Mark Senmartin said he would like the school district to give the property to Marathon and be a partner in the project. Councilwoman Michelle Coldiron said she would prefer if the school district kept the property and enlisted the city as a

partner.

“Don’t forget that the annual school district budget is 10 times that of the City of Marathon,” said Mayor Dan Zieg. “I think the school district should keep the property and we should let them know that the city is very interested in helping with the expenses of a pool by way of an annual

The council plans to put out a request for proposals for two magistrates, who may conduct meetings via teleconference. The magistrates will be hired for a one-year contract that will include a “90-day out” clause.

The City of Marathon is conducting a needs assessment for a community pool and will present its findings in July. The state Department of Health for Monroe County recently conducted a survey that included a question about a community pool. (See below.)

In August, a referendum about a community pool in Marathon narrowly passed 50.14% to 48.86% (866 votes to 861 votes).

• State Department of Transportation officials appeared before the council to give an update on improvements to the Old Seven Mile Bridge.

The construction will be complete by July of 2021. It has yet to be determined if the bridge will be open for foot traffic at all during that time.

SCHOOLS, TOURISM get boost Special session for our state senator

While new to Keys voters, Sen. Anitere Flores is not new to Tallahassee. She first spent six years in the House in Tallahassee, elected in 2004, before putting in another six years in the Senate. When district lines were redrawn, she became the Keys’ representative of District 39 after the 2016 election.

I

t’s natural that as a seasoned professional this 41-year-old wife and mother of two should hold the No. 2 position in the Senate — as Senate President Pro-tem. She’s also the chair of the banking and insurance committee, and the chair of the budget committee for health and human services, overseeing a huge chunk of the state budget. It’s also natural that the politician be extremely busy during last week’s special session called by Gov. Rick Scott.

“Some will say that we got more done in three days than we did during the two months of regular session,” said Flores, laughing. “Initially, the governor tasked us with re-examining funding levels for public schools as well as Visit Florida and Enterprise Florida.”

THE RESULTS:

The $82.4 billion budget goes into effect on July 1.

• PUBLIC EDUCATION The state approved spending an additional $100 per student in public schools. The money will go into the districts’ general revenue fund and bring Florida spending up to about $7,200 per student. (In regular session, Florida’s Bright Futures academic scholarships were increased to 100 percent of tuition at state colleges and universities, plus a stipend. That means a free college education for high-performing students. The law is set to be signed

by Gov. Scott on June 20.) “My priority is going to be to break down as many of those financial barriers as possible that students have to entering higher education,” Flores told Roll Call earlier this month.

• VISIT FLORIDA & ENTERPRISE FLORIDA Both these programs — the first a state tourism agency and the second a state job-incentive agency — were gutted during regular session after a tumble in the turbulent washing machine of politics. Scott, a big supporter of both, managed to restore funding for Visit Florida to about two thirds its former level at $85 million. “The tourism industry is the lifeblood of the Keys, so this can only help,” Flores said.

• LAKE OKEECHOBEE Earlier in the year, Scott expressed support for the proposed $200 million project to repair the dike around the water body. Instead, representatives and senators hashed out a deal for $50 million. “That’s important to the Florida Keys because it can help reduce the discharges from Lake Okeechobee and that in turn helps fresh water flow to Florida Bay,” Flores said. “In conjunction with Senate Bill 10 (to build a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee), you get something that’s really helpful to the Keys.”

• MEDICAL MARIJUANA When Scott called the special session for June 7-9, most expected the next words out of his mouth to be “medical marijuana.” Flores said, “It wasn’t a part of the original call, but by the time the special session ended we were able to include the implementation of Amendment 2.” During the special session, officials decided to ban any type of “smoked” marijuana but to allow oils and edibles; iron out the details of procurement — who can grow it and how to get the product to dispensaries; and do away with the 30-day waiting period from the time a physician prescribes medical marijuana to when a patient can fill a prescription.

ext month Frank Greenman will close the doors on his law office as he seeks more adventures with his wife, Judy, and his three grown daughters. The homegrown statesman moved to Marathon in 1954 and, like other high-profile community members, he followed his own path to success — chiefly by putting the interests of others before his own. His achievements followed an arc that started by jumping off Vaca Cut Bridge as a youngster, to teaching at Marathon High School under the venerable Kay Graddick, and then practicing law armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of planning and land use. He is one of the founders of the City of Marathon, a champion of the underdog, a traveler, a husband and a father.

As he rides off into the sunset, headed toward a new adventure, it’s a good time to review Frank’s “good works” and introduce the key elements of a good life, well lived.

ow are your daughters doing? Kelley, 30, just finished two master’s degrees from Harvard — an MBA and a degree in public policy. Kelley was one of about 25 graduates with that accomplishment from a class of thousands.

Suzie, 28, is in her second year of medical school. She says she wants to specialize in pediatrics, but we think she might become a part of a Doctors Without Borders type of program after her experience in Cameroon with the Peace Corps. And, Katie, 27, received master’s in empathy and compassion. She’s part of the Dear World project, recently working in Orlando with survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting. It’s powerful work.

How is raising girls different than boys? There’s more emphasis on communication. They should be able to tell you everything.

What was it like raising your daughters in Marathon? We did it with love, free rein and lots of travel. At that time, there were lots of active parents like the Pinkus family, the Operchals. Being with your children is what matters.

Where did you travel? Everywhere, but in 2003 we took a six-month trip to Hungary, Egypt, Israel, Kathmandu and Thailand. In each place we stayed three weeks or more. It ended up being very spiritual. The kids were moved by the children who had so little, and when our daughters got back to Marathon they started their own nonprofit and raised $60,000 in three years to help.

Some fishermen got him out of the water, and they sent for both the ambulances from Key West and the Upper Keys. Jimmy went in the first one to Key West, and a little while later, they caught a big Mako shark that still had pieces of bathing suit in its teeth. They sent the shark in the second ambulance to the Miami Seaquarium for study. They later found the shark had a big ulcer.

You served on the first Marathon City Council from 2001-2003 shortly after the city was incorporated.

What was that like? That was the most fun thing I ever did in my life. The first council members all had different areas of expertise and we split up the duties and hired a company to provide us a contract government. A lot of the policies we created are still being followed today.

When was the last time you were in court? On June 9, I presented an oral argument before the 3rd District Court of Appeals. You have your presentation all prepared, but the three judges on the panel interrupt almost immediately. You have to think on your feet.

And I was arguing against Dave Horan, so that’s always fun.

What advice do you have for the current council? Stop looking at the budget and look toward the future.

The parking shortage is going to bite us in the ass. Beautify. And while Marathon City Council has done a good job with affordable housing, the problem is bigger.

What type of law do you specialize in? Well, I don’t know if you would call it a specialty, but it’s local law — the comprehensive plan, local ordinances, environmental permits, code enforcement. When I started there was nobody else doing it. I got hooked in 1986 when the Keys became a state Area of Critical Concern and they were having meetings up and down the Keys.

Which case stands out? There was a couple that had an option to buy a house and the owner had taken out multiple mortgages. It was an interesting bit of law, and I was happy to pull it off — the couple was later able to buy the house at a reasonable price. It was one of those days when I got to wear the white hat to court. I try to wear the white hat as much as possible.

Was your life ever in danger? Yes, some of the cases were threatening.

I used to do criminal law but I got out of that pretty quickly. I would say the divorce cases were the most dangerous, though.

Were you raised in Marathon? I was.

I moved to the Keys when I was 7 years old in 1954. My dad owned a boat works near where Castaways is now.

Tell us a story from the “old days.”

Oh, well. One that stands out was the time Jimmy McKee got his leg bitten off by a shark. In those days, we would tie a piece of plywood to Vaca Cut bridge and the current was moving so fast, you could climb on top of it and “water ski.” Jimmy jumped off where Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters is now and all the sudden, he went under and a big pink bubble came to the surface.

What aspect of the City of Marathon makes you the most proud? Well, I think it was the state approval that allowed us to re-invigorate Marathon’s economy with the redevelopment of 100 new hotel rooms.

GOING GREENMAN

What do you love about Marathon best? I love the way the town comes together to help those in need, whether it’s the aftermath of a fire or medical bills. I was a part of Marathon in Action, a completely ad hoc group that basically put on parties to raise money.

What are you doing with your current cases? Well, I’m finishing some.

Some go to Patrick Stevens, some to Richard Malafy, others to Russ Yagel. In fact, that’s one thing I would like to call attention to. Marathon needs young lawyers. It’s a void and a tremendous opportunity. A lot of the old guard — Tom Wright, John Wolfe, David Kirwan — are near retirement.

What will you do when you retire? I made a decision not to make a decision. But Judy and I will probably travel.

We like the West Coast and Europe. We might even get an RV. Parting thoughts? I didn’t know how overwhelming the love of child was going to be before I had kids. It’s miraculously wonderful. The best thing I’ve ever done in my whole life is raise my children. And each of my girls went into a field of community service. I am so proud.

he Marathon Garden Club Scholarship Committee announced the winners of this year’s scholarships to two graduating Marathon High School seniors. The club received a record number of highly qualified applicants with a variety of science based majors, and announced the winners at the Class Night. The winners are Alyssa Turner and Mackenzie Helms.

Alyssa Turner, class salutatorian, has been accepted at Florida State University with a major in environmental science. During high school, she accumulated 405 community service hours including the Coastal Cleanup.

She achieved a perfect 4.0 grade average while holding a variety of leadership positions, playing volleyball and working part-time. “ I think it is vital that we act now to ensure future generations will have natural resources,” said Alyssa. “Knowing that it is possible to reverse the damage to our ecosystems has inspired me.” Mackenzie Helms achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average while serving as president of National Honor Society, a member of the Academic Challenge Team and Mu Alpha Theta math honorary. She was active in the high school drama program and the Marathon Community Theatre among many other activities and volunteering. She worked various jobs throughout high school to earn money toward college and has been accepted into the honors program at Florida State University with a major in environmental science. “The management of natural resources is the key to conservation efforts being successful and effective,” said Mackenzie.

BRIEFLY MHS disavows sports firm

Best summer story told at Story Slam

It’s been reported recently that a company calling itself Sports Media has been sending “bills” and calling local Marathon businesses under the guise of collecting donations for a Marathon High School sports poster.

The suspect company, with a mailing address in Austin, Texas, is not affiliated with the high school, according to MHS Athletic Director Teresa Konrath.

Any business that is approached by the Texas company is encouraged to hang up and call MHS at 305-289-2480 with any questions.

Story Slam will take place on Friday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Marathon Community Theatre. This month’s topic is Best Summer Story and the winner will take home $50 for their five-minute tale. Admission is $10.

Staffer takes a trip waaaaay offshore for the big catch

“Y

ou’re going to want to bring something to sleep on,” my brother Chase said as I threw together a weekend bag with a couple bathing suits, a blanket and sunscreen.

“Like a beanbag?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said “Get in the truck, they are waiting on us.”

My speargun, dive gear and Sudafed were already by the door waiting to head out on commercial diver and fisherman Capt. Johnny B.’s 43-foot Alexis M. By 10:30 p.m. we were on our 120-mile, 10-hour journey to “the spots.” I lost cell phone service after an hour, and set about arranging my sleeping quarters in the fresh air … on top of the icebox. (I later moved after I discovered it also served as the chum preparation area.)

“Don’t fall in. And tell someone when you have to pee,” Chase said.

“If you go over in the middle of the night, no one will ever know.”

The night featured shrimp boats littered on the horizon 60 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. We stopped at 4:30 a.m. to catch bait and I saw the four guys on the Alexis M. move around the boat the way I imagine bees and ants collaborate: no talking, just work. My job description was easy: “stay the (expletive deleted) out of the way.”

At 7 a.m. I took over the helm while the others slept. My new job description included “don’t run into anything and wake me up if the boat falls off the purple line.” This is when the magic happened. While everyone was dead asleep, hundreds of dolphins showed up – little tiny baby Gulf dolphins, not the huge Dolphin Research Center Atlantic bottlenose ones I’m used to seeing off the Keys.

The sun barely up, I sat in the propped open window in the front of the boat, quietly, being the most excited person in the world.

We spent the first day diving deep wrecks. Chase’s explanation of the first one (I think he was joking, but I’m not sure): “There’s still dead people in it; I wouldn’t look inside if I were you.” His explanation of the second dive: “The thing is falling apart; do not go inside for any reason whatsoever.”

That night we went after snapper.

It was probably the best rod-and-reel fishing experience of my life. Drop line in, reel up big fish. Rebait, drop line in, reel up big fish. ALL NIGHT. This wasn’t fishing, this was commercial CATCHING. I slept – I use that word loosely – in the beanbag again and woke at the break of dawn for more diving. The second day we dove another wreck (with a wall of 5-foot barracudas protecting it), then dove a tower (only a hammerhead and bull shark), and then shallow stuff in 40 feet. In the shallows, Chase gave me a hug underwater and renamed me the “hogfish whisperer” back at the boat.

Mate Tyler cooked up steak fajitas on the way in, while the others gutted the fish from the day. We showered in the hose in the back of the boat and made it to the That’s What She Shot Spearfishing Tournament weigh-in with 30 minutes to spare. Our boat swept the men’s scuba division with first and second place. (See story, page 37.) And I came home with awesome stories to tell my kiddos. Summer, my 9-year-old, said she’s ready for a commercial trip with Uncle Chase very soon.

ART INSTALLATION Art in public places to be unveiled soon

hose giant sculptures popping up in the Middle Keys are part of a sculpture “art trail” being installed by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.

Earlier this week, the RVW Sculpture team — yes, it’s their profession to install art sculptures and only art sculptures — at The Art Studio in Marathon and at the Grimal Grove on Big Pine Key. The rest of the work is being stored at Keys Cable Park on Grassy Key. The work was produced by New York artists and shipped to the Keys. See the Weekly for more details once the installations from Islamorada and Key West are complete.

Two-part race set for July 22

R

unners, fitness walkers and paddleboard enthusiasts can test their skills and celebrate Ernest Hemingway’s sporting lifestyle Saturday, July 22. The Hemingway 5K Sunset Run/Walk is the longest on-going race in Key West (25 years), and a few years ago, the paddleboard element was added.

The athletic challenges are part of Hemingway Days, a six-day commemoration of the life and work of the author who lived and wrote in Key West for most of the 1930s.

The three-mile Lazy Dog Paddleboard Race will kick off at 6 p.m. at the island city’s Southernmost Beach, 1405 Duval St. on the Atlantic Ocean.

The 5K run/walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, oceanfront at Whitehead and South streets.

Participants race through Old Town Key West, past landmarks including the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, Green Parrot Bar, the Key West Lighthouse, and Custom House as they complete the fast, flat 3.1-mile course.

A registration booth will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. on race day on the beach outside of the Southernmost Beach Café. A post-race awards party is scheduled outside in the same area and includes free food, libations and raffles.

Paddleboard awards will be presented to the first- through 10th-place male and female finishers, plus to the top first- through third-place male and female race boards. In the 5K, awards await the top three male and female overall finishers, top three male and female masters, and top three male

eorge Bueno is a well-loved bartender from Marathon to Key West. He spent three years slinging drinks in Marathon, and prior to that, eight years at Looe Key Tiki Bar, where he was affectionately known as “Flaming George.”

(Search YouTube for “Flaming George at the Tiki Bar” if you want to see his pyrotechnic bottle flaring.)

After being asked if he wanted to transfer from a Marathon resort to Tavern and Town, he jumped at the opportunity to be more creative with his cocktails in a higher-end restaurant. The most popular drink is the espresso martini, made with vanilla and espresso vodka, Kahlua, and fresh brewed espresso.

His go-to dishes include the juicy ribeye, or grouper or salmon; for appetizers, the filet tips served in a demi glaze over potato gratin. “The happy hours and local specials really draw people in,” he said. Tavern and Town’s Tapas Tuesday and Tapas Thursday menu have light bites around $7 from 5 to 7 p.m. (and after 9 p.m. every day) and all the locals love their $19.95 dinner menu.

“It’s just different here in the islands,” he said. “I love it.” When he isn’t working, he’s spending time with his wife, Leieana, and their three kids.

ay back in the day (well, 1976), UK rock band Jethro Tull released a song (and album) titled “Too Old to Rock ’n’ Roll: Too Young to Die!” That was 41 years ago and while many have come and gone, there are those still active and rocking at an advanced age … proving that we may never be too old to rock!

Some of that sentiment may have stemmed from the distrust of the older generation that Boomers growing up in the Vietnam era possessed. “Don’t trust anyone over 30,” and “Hope I die before I get old,” were popular sentiments among hippies and flower children – until they (we) passed 30 and started growing old. As the resident “senior columnist” here at the Weekly Newspapers, I’m happy to report that those of us old enough to remember the Vietnam era certainly haven’t decided to head out to pasture. I also attest that our age and experience more than qualify us to keep rocking! A few examples follow.

Exhibit 1: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Currently in the middle of their 40th Anniversary Tour, Petty & Co. are in fine form, perhaps never sounding better as a band. As the Heartbreakers, they’ve been together (the four original members) for 35 years. The three main players (Tom, Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench) have been playing together since their teens. I got to see them in concert twice on this tour, and they sound as good (if not better) than they did when I first saw them over 27 years ago. It was also good to see their opening act …

Exhibit 2: Joe Walsh. Nearly five decades have passed since Joe joined James Gang, spreading “Funk 49” across the USA from their Ohio home.

Since then, Joe has had a legendary solo career, joined the legendary Eagles, and had a legendary drug and alcohol habit that nearly cost him everything. Clean and sober since 1994, Joe still plays his hind quarters off, and against nearly all odds, survived and thrived. The Clown Prince of Rock turns 70 this year, and it was great to see him rock.

Exhibit 3: Paul McCartney. Rapidly approaching that magical milestone of 75 years, McCartney has showed no signs of slowing down, and time has taken absolutely nothing away from his musical abilities. Right now, Paul is on another monster tour, stopping in Miami July 5. His concerts aren’t short shows, either. Paul and his band go through more than 30 songs a night in a marathon concert without an

intermission, and he performs like a man one-third of his actual age. I’d have to agree with the Toronto Sun reviewer who wrote, “That McCartney kid looks like he could JOHN very well be an upBARTUS and-comer.”

Another member and a guy with more than former Mayor of three-quarters of the City of Marathon. John is also a century under a musician who his belt, Simon performs around is touring as you town at various read this column. establishments.

He also hasn’t lost a thing. Drawing from a huge catalog of his amazing songs, his shows span everything from old Simon & Garfunkel chestnuts to songs from albums he still releases, including last year’s “Stranger to Stranger.” Having seen two stops on this recent tour, I was amazed at his songs, his band, his abilities as a vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader, and his wit, wisdom and enthusiasm for the music after all these years. He was having as good a time as anyone else at the shows.

There are many others: the Rolling Stones (touring now), Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (will likely never stop touring), Gordon Lightfoot (still touring at 78), and many more.

Not only does a 73-year-old Mick Jagger keep tearing up stages around the world, he remains active in other areas of life … having just fathered a baby boy last December.

I’ve had a theory for a long time that music – especially playing music – keeps people young. I’ve seen it in friends and bandmates, and I’ve certainly seen it at the uppermost echelons of the business. I also totally believe that age and experience gives a musician seasoning and hones his abilities and chops. If old blues, jazz, and country musicians can still play with the best of them, then why not the rockers? Too old to rock and roll?
