Dads are such wonderful, almost mystical creatures. They are able to jerry-rig baby bottles to bungee cords, restyle strollers with shoe catchers and will hand a child a power drill with absolutely no hesitation. Fathers can be creative and fearless and inspiring. Whether it’s leaping over a crowd of people just to catch their kid from falling or just incoherently shouting at a television during game time, no question, they are fun to watch. So we asked…

What’s the craziest thing your Dad ever did?

“He was in the E Street Band,” said Torin “The Bird” Tellone. “Yes, for the first couple of years, he played with Bruce, that Bruce.”

“My dad was an electrician,” said Henry Hamilton, “and he would use his hands to test the current; it can really be bad at 220.”

“He went into the attic to fix something and was walking on the ceiling beams, all the while my mother told him to stop. But he kept yelling ‘I know what I’m doing!” said Rick Lopez “Then he fell through the ceiling into the living room.”

“My dad liked to give us checks,” said Marlene Koenig, “so one year for Christmas ,he photo-copied them really small and put them in a cracker jack box as the prize.”

“My dad used to clean windows 35 stories high in New York City,” said Albert Gonzalez, “without a safety harness.”

Do you have a life credo or motto? The 7P principal: prior proper planning precludes piss poor performance.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life and surprisingly changed everything? Falling in love with my wife, Jennifer, and getting married.

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket” list? One thing you did achieve?

I’d like to go back and visit my grandparents’ home in Italy. And the one thing I did achieve was enjoying and getting married in the south of France with my wife Jennifer.

You have known and worked with President Donald Trump for 15 years. Is President Trump the same as businessman Trump when it comes to environmental decisions? Yes. He’s all about clean air and clean water. By focusing on cleaning and preserving our air and water, we solve a lot of our environmental challenges and protect the health of our residents.

As a Keys environmentalist and new planning board member, what are your goals? I will respect the history and culture of Key West, and protect and preserve its unique character for future generations.

What motivated you to write about Donald Trump, such a polarizing figure? I wanted to chronicle the facts regarding all of his environmental achievements.

Most people have no idea that he has planted millions of dollars of trees, cleaned up landfills, stabilized stream banks, created and expanded important habitats for threatened and endangered species of birds, fish and plants.

He did this as a private citizen and without government subsidies. He was the first and largest contributor to our local organizations back in 2010 when we were mobilizing to protect the Florida Keys from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

People should know these things.

What is your nerdiest passion? Birding.

If you were invisible, what would you do in Key West? Play my ukulele at The Green Parrot.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Smoking a great Cuban cigar.

If you could grant Key West one wish? Clean up that damn polluting landfill, quickly.

Do people know you were a finalist in the Hemingway lookalike contest in 2005? Very few, and it was a whole lot of fun.

PASSION TRUMPS POLITICS Russo speaks on environment, president

F

or 17 years, Edward Russo has lived in the Florida Keys, “the most unpretentious place I know.” This from a man who wrote the 2016 book “Donald Trump: An Environmental Hero.” Russo was not afraid to tackle the most polarizing American political figure in recent years. Why? Russo has a deep passion advocating for the environment and is not afraid to talk about what or who he knows. Originally from New Jersey, with a degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, Russo has previously served on an environmental commission and board of health (Chester, N.J.), planning board and co-chaired environmental commission (Bedminster Township, N.J.). Most notably, he served as an environmental consultant for President Donald Trump (before he was elected) and the Trump companies for 15 years.

His recent appointment to the Key West Planning Board by Commissioner Sam Kaufman raised some eyebrows due to his Trump ties, but Russo has a weighty local resume as well. He is on the board of directors for Reef Relief and the Florida Keys Community College Foundation. He is president of the Florida Keys Environmental Coalition and serves on the Monroe County Climate Change Advisory Committee. In the end, Russo believes in protecting and building our environmental future; as he says, “The environment is too important to politicize.”

SCHOOLS, TOURISM get boost Special session for our state senator

While new to Keys voters, Sen. Anitere Flores is not new to Tallahassee. She first spent six years in the House in Tallahassee, elected in 2004, before putting in another six years in the Senate. When district lines were redrawn, she became the Keys’ representative of District 39 after the 2016 election.

I

t’s natural that as a seasoned professional this 41-year-old wife and mother of two should hold the No. 2 position in the Senate — as Senate President Pro-tem. She’s also the chair of the banking and insurance committee, and the chair of the budget committee for health and human services, overseeing a huge chunk of the state budget. It’s also natural that the politician be extremely busy during last week’s special session called by Gov. Rick Scott.

“Some will say that we got more done in three days than we did during the two months of regular session,” said Flores, laughing. “Initially, the governor tasked us with re-examining funding levels for public schools as well as Visit Florida and Enterprise Florida.”

THE RESULTS:

The $82.4 billion budget goes into effect on July 1.

• PUBLIC EDUCATION The state approved spending an additional $100 per student in public schools. The money will go into the districts’ general revenue fund and bring Florida spending up to about $7,200 per student. (In regular session, Florida’s Bright Futures academic scholarships were increased to 100 percent of tuition at state colleges and universities, plus a stipend. That means a free college education for high-performing students. The law is set to be signed

by Gov. Scott on June 20.) “My priority is going to be to break down as many of those financial barriers as possible that students have to entering higher education,” Flores told Roll Call earlier this month.

• VISIT FLORIDA & ENTERPRISE FLORIDA Both these programs — the first a state tourism agency and the second a state job-incentive agency — were gutted during regular session after a tumble in the turbulent washing machine of politics. Scott, a big supporter of both, managed to restore funding for Visit Florida to about two thirds its former level at $85 million. “The tourism industry is the lifeblood of the Keys, so this can only help,” Flores said.

• LAKE OKEECHOBEE Earlier in the year, Scott expressed support for the proposed $200 million project to repair the dike around the water body. Instead, representatives and senators hashed out a deal for $50 million. “That’s important to the Florida Keys because it can help reduce the discharges from Lake Okeechobee and that in turn helps fresh water flow to Florida Bay,” Flores said. “In conjunction with Senate Bill 10 (to build a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee), you get something that’s really helpful to the Keys.”

• MEDICAL MARIJUANA When Scott called the special session for June 7-9, most expected the next words out of his mouth to be “medical marijuana.” Flores said, “It wasn’t a part of the original call, but by the time the special session ended we were able to include the implementation of Amendment 2.” During the special session, officials decided to ban any type of “smoked” marijuana but to allow oils and edibles; iron out the details of procurement — who can grow it and how to get the product to dispensaries; and do away with the 30-day waiting period from the time a physician prescribes medical marijuana to when a patient can fill a prescription.

Staffer takes a trip waaaaay offshore for the big catch

“Y

ou’re going to want to bring something to sleep on,” my brother Chase said as I threw together a weekend bag with a couple bathing suits, a blanket and sunscreen.

“Like a beanbag?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said “Get in the truck, they are waiting on us.”

My speargun, dive gear and Sudafed were already by the door waiting to head out on commercial diver and fisherman Capt. Johnny B.’s 43-foot Alexis M. By 10:30 p.m. we were on our 120-mile, 10-hour journey to “the spots.” I lost cell phone service after an hour, and set about arranging my sleeping quarters in the fresh air … on top of the icebox. (I later moved after I discovered it also served as the chum preparation area.)

“Don’t fall in. And tell someone when you have to pee,” Chase said.

“If you go over in the middle of the night, no one will ever know.”

The night featured shrimp boats littered on the horizon 60 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. We stopped at 4:30 a.m. to catch bait and I saw the four guys on the Alexis M. move around the boat the way I imagine bees and ants collaborate: no talking, just work. My job description was easy: “stay the (expletive deleted) out of the way.”

At 7 a.m. I took over the helm while the others slept. My new job description included “don’t run into anything and wake me up if the boat falls off the purple line.” This is when the magic happened. While everyone was dead asleep, hundreds of dolphins showed up – little tiny baby Gulf dolphins, not the huge Dolphin Research Center Atlantic bottlenose ones I’m used to seeing off the Keys. The sun barely up, I sat in the propped open window in the front of the boat, quietly, being the most excited person in the world.

We spent the first day diving deep wrecks. Chase’s explanation of the first one (I think he was joking, but I’m not sure): “There’s still dead people in it; I wouldn’t look inside if I were you.” His explanation of the second dive: “The thing is falling apart; do not go inside for any reason whatsoever.”

That night we went after snapper. It was probably the best rodand-reel fishing experience of my life. Drop line in, reel up big fish.

FRLA hosts success workshop

[Editor’s note: This summer the Keys Weekly team is focusing on what we are loosely billing as “summer adventures.”

The stories will publish every week. Some are pretty straight forward, no-experienceneeded adventures of a day; others focus on the treasures awaiting locals and visitors “off the beaten path.” And then, there’s this one by Kristen Livengood — a true adventure in every sense of the word about the weekend she joined a team for competitive spearfishing and commercial fishing. And, yes, it’s commercial fishing whether by rod or net or speargun.]

I slept – I use that word loosely – in the beanbag again and woke at the break of dawn for more diving. The second day we dove another wreck (with a wall of 5-foot barracudas protecting it), then dove a tower (only a hammerhead and bull shark), and then shallow stuff in 40 feet. In the shallows, Chase gave me a hug underwater and renamed me the “hogfish whisperer” back at the boat.

the fish from the day. We showered in the hose in the back of the boat and made it to the That’s What She Shot Spearfishing Tournament weigh-in with 30 minutes to spare. Our boat swept the men’s scuba division with first and second place. (See story, page 20.) And I came home with awesome stories to tell my kiddos. Summer, my 9-year-old, said she’s ready for a commercial trip with Uncle Chase very soon.

ayne Hammond came to Key West in 1993 from New York City, along with Larry Baeder, and his band to perform for two weeks at the Hog’s Breath Saloon. He arrived in Key West at 9:30 p.m. and was on stage performing at Hog’s Breath at 10 p.m., and has been here ever since.

Before his arrival in Key West, Hammond lived in New York for 10 years, playing bass guitar for every kind of music imaginable. He had just released an album in New York with a different band, and played and toured with Mick Taylor, formerly of the Rolling Stones, for three years.

To his surprise when he arrived in Key West, there was a shortage of bass players, and he played steadily at Hog’s Breath for four years. He also recorded a lot at Dan Simpson’s studio, and played with most of the musicians in town. He played jazz with jazz guitarist Mike Gillis in 1995 and 1996, and started playing with Pete Jarvis in 1996 – forming the famous duo known as Pete and Wayne performing at Sloppy Joe’s.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Hammond said he “got to steal from the best” because he grew up around a lot of great players. Self taught, Hammond has been playing bass in a band since he was 12 years old.

But he doesn’t take his talent for granted.

“No matter how good you think you are, you should still practice every day,” he said.

music and funk music. “I gravitated more to R&B and really like to focus on playing funk whenever I can”. He has written songs for Pete and Wayne.

“This is the first summer in Key West in 16 years I’m not touring with Pete and Wayne, so I’m available LOL!” Hammond will be playing every Saturday in June, July and August with Andy Wescott and Randy Morrow at Sloppy Joe’s, and every Thursday and Friday with Pete Jarvis as Pete and Wayne, also at Sloppy Joe’s.

“People always say ‘quit your job and come to Key West,’ but you have to get two jobs when you live here, so people leave,” he said, “but 90 percent of people who leave miss it and come back … not to mention it’s mango season! In five years, hopefully I’ll still be living here and playing as much music as possible, music that people know but nobody else plays.”

eorge Bueno is a well-loved bartender from Marathon to Key West. He spent three years slinging drinks in Marathon, and prior to that, eight years at Looe Key Tiki Bar, where he was affectionately known as “Flaming George.”

(Search YouTube for “Flaming George at the Tiki Bar” if you want to see his pyrotechnic bottle flaring.)

After being asked if he wanted to transfer from a Marathon resort to Tavern and Town, he jumped at the opportunity to be more creative with his cocktails in a higher-end restaurant. The most popular drink is the espresso martini, made with vanilla and espresso vodka, Kahlua, and fresh brewed espresso.

His go-to dishes include the juicy ribeye, or grouper or salmon; for appetizers, the filet tips served in a demi glaze over potato gratin. “The happy hours and local specials really draw people in,” he said. Tavern and Town’s Tapas Tuesday and Tapas Thursday menu have light bites around $7 from 5 to 7 p.m. (and after 9 p.m. every day) and all the locals love their $19.95 dinner menu.

“It’s just different here in the islands,” he said. “I love it.”

When he isn’t working, he’s spending time with his wife, Leieana, and their three kids.

L

ocal radio personality Bill Hoebee has been runner-up for Best Local Celebrity three years running. Not only has he lost, but lost all three times to singer Howard Livingston. Gotta hand it to Hoebee, he has been the picture of grace and first-class manners about it “The first time I lost, I blacked out a little,” said Hoebee.

He does concede that losing to New York Times Bestselling Prize Winning Author Judy Blume feels logical; “She’s JUDY BLUME,” he said, throwing up his hands. Blume, unlike the other two, has a Wikipedia page, but again, this is for local celebrity, not international. Looking to pull a “Susan Lucci” this year, Hoebee is hoping finally to give an acceptance speech “Thanking the people for finally getting it right this year.” (He has put in a word with a neighbor of Lucci’s to get some speech pointers.)

He also promises to remain clothed during the award ceremony.

Hoebee left his doubters with these words, “I have a TV show, a syndicated radio show, I write magazine columns—Do I have to play ukulele in Howard’s band to win?” In case of a tie, Hoebee and Livingston will now have to re-enact dueling banjos.

What is your favorite social medium and why? Whom do you follow? Facebook is my favorite because it’s interesting and has all of my friends and family on there.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? The biggest challenges in the Keys is waste that gets thrown around and makes the island look dirty. More people need to take care of their waste to help.

‘Whimsical’ mural coming to airport HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

K

ey West Airport has always been truly unique, from its size to its colorful art. This week will welcome the next eye-catching mural, painted by local artist Marlene Koenig. She was chosen by the airport staff and the Monroe County Art in Public Places committee members to make the outside arrival area a little more welcoming and reflect the vibrant Keys life visitors embrace.

Starting this week, Koenig will be painting the six 4- by 6-foot concrete barriers outside the airport that direct traffic. Chosen out of 29 artists, Koenig’s design is an underwater scene full of sea life and vibrant colors.

“You will see scuba divers’ legs, squid tentacles and fish heads in a mix-and-match way so when they are lined up it will be a whimsical scene.” With a $4,999 “honorarium,” Koenig hopes to finish in two weeks or about 12 sessions — depending on the weather.

“The airport staff asked for guidance on having a local artist create a design to welcome passengers while they were standing in line for a taxi,” said Elizabeth Young, executive

director of Florida Keys Council of the Arts. “Marlene’s design captured the essence of what we were all looking for – bright, interesting, playful and welcoming! Most notably, it will definitely put a smile on your face and also let each arriving passenger know they have arrived to a very friendly island!”

Having lived the Keys life for the past 10 years, Koenig’s art already graces many places around the island.

Her murals can be found at Salute, Andy’s Cabana, The Café, and Shakti Yoga. Koenig is also a beloved yoga instructor at Shakti Yoga and her art is throughout the studio.

“I am very affected by color and the vibration they give us. I like images that give us a sense of joy,” said Koenig. More of Koenig’s art can be found on her website, marlenekoenig.com.

TDC DIRECTOR TO RETIRE

Wheeler has held post since 1996

H

arold Wheeler, the longtime director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, has announced plans to retire in late September.

Wheeler has guided TDC since April 1996.

“I have enjoyed working for the TDC and appreciate the support from staff, TDC board and district advisory committee members, marketing agencies, government leaders and the Florida Keys tourism industry,” Wheeler said Tuesday. “While I look forward to a more relaxed lifestyle that retirement affords, I will miss relationships that have been made and am proud of the team’s accomplishments.”

Wheeler served on the Florida Governor’s Commission on Tourism for eight years and was a member of Visit Florida’s board of directors for 10 years.

He is a board member of the Florida Association of Destination Marketing Organizations and was its

chair for fiscal year 2014-15.

Among other honors, he received the 2010 Margo Golan Community Service Award from the Lodging Association of the Florida Harold Wheeler Keys and Key West.

“It is impossible to measure Harold’s dedication and the contributions he has made to the TDC’s marketing programs for so long,” said TDC chairperson Rita Irwin. “He has guided our initiatives through both good and challenging times and his commitment has never wavered.

“No doubt he has earned his retirement,” she added.

‘Keys Moths’ Bio Blitz events Keys Moths Bio Blitz will take place during two night on Thursday, June 22 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the National Key Deer Refuge Visitor Center on Big Pine Key and on Saturday, June 24 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge on Key Largo. David Fine, the “Moth Guy,” will guide the group in cataloging as many species of moths as possible with a goal to identify 250 species in two nights. New exhibit celebrates Overseas Railway

T

hose with a penchant for some good “old fashioned” letter writing will appreciate a series of vintage postcard prints offered by the museum stores at Key West Art & Historical Society’s 3 locations: Key West Lighthouse & Keeper’s Quarters, Custom House, & Fort East Martello Museums.

Among the prints is one originally designed as a poster by Lantern Press that pays tribute to Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway, the extension of the Florida East Coast Railway they said couldn’t be done.

Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates this engineering feat that joined mainland Florida to Key West with a newly-renovated permanent exhibit on the second floor of the Custom House Museum located at 281 Front St. Flagler visited Florida in 1878 to support his first wife’s ailing health, returning several times for its natural beauty, “but always found the journey and accommodation lacking,” said curator Cori Convertito.

Flagler embarked on a second career in his fifties as a hotel developer and railroad builder, with the

intention of bringing wealthy northerners to a region of the country he had grown to love. He recognized that extending his Florida East Coast Railway to Key West’s deep-water port could result in immense financial gains from commercial maritime freight, and understood that it would provide a direct connection to the mainland by something other than ships while bringing many pleasureseekers to his resorts during the winter months.

“If I don’t build it, nobody will,” he said.

Flagler spent more than $50 million of his own money to complete his dream. While a portion of railroad tracks in the Florida Keys was wiped out by the most intense hurricane ever to strike the United States, thanks to Flagler’s solid engineering, several of the bridges were repurposed for the present-day Overseas Highway.

The society’s exhibit provides visitors the opportunity to take in this colossal achievement and pays homage to the man who made it happen. The cards are sold for $6.95 for a set of 12 classic Keys images custom made in the U.S., with non-toxic ink on recycled paper.

The society’s museums and stores are open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The man who doesn’t know how to work a hair barrette but could fix a washing machine, forgets when bedtime is but remembers how many stories to read and makes pancakes for dinner because his kids love pancakes. Mark Samples is a car dealer who wasn’t afraid to go rogue. He once defied city ordinance and was summoned to court for putting balloons on cars for the big sale.

His daughter, Betty Gay, owner of Lucky Street Gallery, said “He taught me how to run a successful business, catch big fish and always ‘do the deal’ and ‘be the ball.’”

Bart Smith is a local attorney, triathlon champ and father to Ryder, 3, and Scarlett, 1. He loves fishing and boating with his family on the weekends when he is not playing with all his nieces and nephews, and even their friends, in the pool.

Markus Siegert is a research scientist who loves windsurfing and electronics. His daughter Mila thinks he’s funny, likes the help with her math homework, when he builds things for her and takes her on the back of his bike to get ice-cream. Little Max is impressed by dad’s toolbox and his iguanascaring skills.

Everyone knows Nick Norman as a singer-songwriter, but he also loves playing chess. What does his daughter, TK (Taylor Kase), age 2, like best about her dad? That he’s a sucker. But mostly his singing…
