Karey Eugene Burk

Born on July 22, 1929 to Paul and Margaret Cahill in Brooklyn, New York, Mary Hyer passed away peacefully on May 26, 2017 in the Florida Keys surrounded by her family. Mary enjoyed painting, reading, being outdoors and laughing with her friends and family. She was an active member of the San Pablo Parish in Marathon.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, brothers Paul and Edward Cahill, and husband Charles. Mary is survived by her daughter Paula and her husband David, her son Charles and her granddaughter Vanessa, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life on July 15 from noon to 4 p.m. in her honor at the Key Colony Inn in Key Colony Beach. In lieu of flowers, Mary’s family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to Patrice Schwermer of the Catholic Charities of Monroe County, FL.

Karey Eugene Burk, 63, of Marathon, Florida, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, June 3, 2017 in Goshen, Indiana.

On March 7, 1954, Karey was born in Warsaw, Indiana to Arthur and Marie (Gregory) Burk. Karey served our country honorably in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class from 1971 to 1973. He was a resident of Marathon for the last 21 years; previously he was employed by Lawn Rangers of Warsaw in chemical applications.

Karey was a member of American Legion Post 154, Marathon, Florida; life member of VFW, Marathon and former member of American Legion Post #49, Warsaw and American Legion Post #258, Pierceton. He had a love of the ocean and was an avid fisherman. In Marathon, he organized food drives for the needy and was active in fundraising for the Wounded Warriors.

He is survived by three sisters, Julie (and spouse Tim) Reams, Goshen; Judy (and spouse Don) Prater, Claypool; Elizabeth Gregory, Claypool; and his brother, Gary Gregory, Claypool. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours are scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2017 at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Pierceton. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, with full military honors by American Legion Post 258, Pierceton and the Military Funeral Honor Guard.

The studio execs know this, and every year they design an incredible lineup of that phenomenon known as the “summer blockbuster.” This year, movie-goers can look forward to a range of flicks from “Despicable Me 3” to “Alien: Covenant.” We asked …

What summer blockbuster are you going to see?

Justin Knowlton says he’s still waiting for the best sequel ever to be released.

“As soon as ‘Super Troopers II’ hits theaters, I am there.”

“I don’t really care what’s playing at the movies,” said Robert Hunt, while celebrating the one-year anniversary of Overseas Pub on Wednesday. “I go for the matinee for the hotdogs; they just happen to be showing a movie at the time.”

Tony Baker researched upcoming releases because he really, really wanted to be in the paper. After careful research, he came upon “Bad Boys III.” Even though it will be early 2018 before it’s released, Baker said that’s OK, it will still be hot as summer then, too. “Bad Boy for life,” he said.

“I like the Marvel comics, but ‘Wonder Woman’ is probably worth seeing,” said Mark Chesser, a contractor who now only fishes for fun after years as a flats captain. “And I want to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2.’”

THIS IS ‘NOT A GAME’ United Way simulation makes poverty feel real KRISTEN LIVENGOOD kristen@keysweekly.com

A

ngie Walterson is a married mom of two who works at First State Bank of the Florida Keys.

But in February, she found herself in tears in the middle of a room of strangers, helpless. Her husband up and left out of nowhere and she didn’t have enough money to feed her children, let alone enough to take a bus to look for a job. When she made it to the “government assistance office,” there was nothing left. She pawned most of her nonessential items for extra money, but left her kids’ belongings untouched in an effort at normalcy.

Walterson’s experience wasn’t real – it was part of a poverty simulation put on by United Way of the Florida Keys, but for almost half of the people in Monroe County, it could be real life.

“I felt completely vulnerable,” said Walterson, who participated in the simulation earlier this year as a part of Leadership Monroe. “I related with the situation because I have children and it was a really eye-opening the everyday situations some of our community members have to deal with.”

“Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families,” said United Way’s Kate Bauer-Jones. “But, unless you’ve experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand.”

To help bridge understanding, another simulation will be held, free and open to the public, on Saturday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marathon City Hall.

The simulation is an interactive immersion experience, helping sensitize participants to the realities of poverty.

“It is not a game,” said Bauer-Jones of the simulation which is based on real people, and their real lives and experiences. “We are offering this experience to the community to promote awareness, increase understanding, and inspire action.”

During the simulation, participants are given a role to play and live a month in someone else’s shoes. The month is broken up into four 20-minute “weeks.” Some will be single mothers, like Walterson’s role; others will be married with the provider losing a job, or battling health issues creating a lack of employment. The participants will have to look for jobs, find transportation and buy gas, if they have a car, go grocery shopping, pay rent or mortgages, and utility bills.

Children are welcome at the simulation to experience the roles alongside their parents. “We’re hoping this will help increase the sense of urgency for families and impress upon people the disproportionate effect poverty has on children,” said Bauer-Jones. “Poverty disproportionately affects children.

Sixty percent of our kids live in families below the ALICE threshold (see below), and according to the Department of Children and Families, we have the second highest rate of student homelessness in the state.”

Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsay also participated in the simulation in February and was given a role as someone who was laid off his job as an airline pilot with a mortgage to pay and children to get through school.

“This simulation brings awareness and inspires change,” he said. “I learned a smile and kindness can go a long way.”

What did the ALICE report say about the Keys?

The ALICE (“Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed”) report looks at the real cost of living for families and individuals today, county by county across the state of Florida to understand what it really costs to live in the panhandle vs. Jacksonville vs. Lakeland vs. the Keys. The Keys have the highest cost of living in the state, and if you add folks below the federal poverty limit and folks living below what’s called the “ALICE Threshold” (survival income), 48 percent of year-round Keys residents barely make enough. The study reveals that Monroe County has the highest “household survival budget” in the state — $62,000 for a family of four to cover basic necessities such as housing, food, transportation, child care and health care.

Kayak trip benefits cancer research

T

he Castaways for Cancer will be making their 18th kayaking trip from Key Biscayne all the way to Key West next week. They launch on Saturday, June 10 and divide the trip into segments — stopping for one night each at Elliott Key, Key Largo, Islamorada, Grassy Key, Bahia Honda, Sugarloaf and finishing up at Smathers Beach around 2 p.m. on Friday, June 16.

In 2017, the group has raised about $70,000 for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life challenge. In past years, the team has been the No. 1 fundraiser for the challenge in Florida. In the 18 years the Castaways have been paddling, they’ve raised more than $900,000. Yes, almost $1 million.

F

or eight years, Marathon Community Theatre has produced a summer dance spectacular known simply as “tah-DANCE.” This year’s production is subtitled “One More Time,” and the show’s structure resembles a behind-the-scenes look at similar dance shows on TV like “So You Think You Can Dance.”

The dancers take the stage for one night only – Saturday, June 10 with the curtain at 8 p.m. Director Donna Nussenblatt says the cast takes the stage and uses short skits to tell the story.

“Some dancers are interviewed before their number, some after — just like they do it on TV,” Nussenblatt said. “And all those shows have one big number with the entire cast that needs to be rehearsed at the last minute, so the choreographer comes on stage, too.”

The choreographer is played by Marathon favorite Jay C. Mora.

Guests should not miss the Ghostbusters number, second in the lineup. It includes a “ghost dance,” “actual” ghosts, and finally the ghostbusters.

Webcam focuses on nesting pair of white-crowned pigeons

W

hether you’re down the road or on the mainland, you can check on a pair of nesting white-crowned pigeons in the National Key Deer Refuge, courtesy of a love “critter cam” on a backcountry island in the refuge.

The camera is focused on a nesting pair of the pigeons, currently incubating two eggs in their nest.

You can check the live video feed from the “critter cam” link at the website of either the key deer refuge or the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge. The links are: www.fws.gov/ refuge/National_Key_Deer_Refuge/ and www.fws.gov/refuge/great_white_ heron Critter cams provide lots of information to biologists, including a behind-the-scenes look at animal biology and ecology, without disturbing them or influencing their behavior. This data can be very helpful in managing a species and its habitats. Critter cams are also excellent education and outreach tools. Whether you are an educator, a naturalist, a birder or interested citizen there is much to learn and enjoy while watching the videos. The refuges’ friends group FAVOR Florida Keys supports the project.

• White-crowned pigeons make sacrifices to ensure that their young are raised in a safe place. Pigeons nest primarily on backcountry mangrove islands where there are few or no predators like snakes, raccoons or feral cats. However, there is little to eat there, so they take shifts on the nest while the other parent flies to the mainland pine rockland and hardwood hammock habitats to eat. This can be a long commute, as much as 10 to 15 miles one way.

• South Florida is the only place to support this species in the U.S. - their safety zone in an otherwise hunted range. The Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges habitat provides safe nesting and foraging areas for tens of thousands of these birds each summer.

• These winged “Johnny Appleseeds” eat mostly fruit of trees like figs, poisonwood, blolly, seagrape, pigeon plum and more. When the pigeon is done digesting the fruit, the seeds are deposited (in their scat) to start new trees elsewhere. These trees are invaluable to hundreds of other wildlife species.

• The pigeons provide food for hungry falcons and hawks. As you might imagine, becoming food isn’t top on their list so they have adapted quick flight and incredible aerial maneuvers to help them avoid predators and stay alive.

• The bird helps officials monitor population changes and gauge the health of the refuge habitats. With years of data on nesting locations and numbers of white crowned pigeons, the USFWS can keep tabs on any changes that occur to help inform management of these state-threatened species.

• Photographers find that getting a good photograph of the whitecrowned pigeon is a challenge, but well worth it. The beautiful white head, iridescent green neck, red bill and feet, and slate-colored body make for wonderful images. You’ll have to put your time in as they are wary of people and skittish about being out in the open.

n June 5, before dawn, fire consumed Vaca Cut Marina on the west end of Marathon. When it was over, three boats had burned to the waterline, a home was destroyed, multiple forklifts were destroyed and thousands of traps burned. It’s estimated the total loss is close to $1 million.

Liz Prieto said Alberto “Beto” Diaz was alerted to the situation by a message from an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) installed on his vessel “Abel.” He reportedly sent a crew member to check on what he thought was a sinking vessel, only to learn the boat, reportedly recently purchased and refitted, was on fire. His brother Fernando Diaz is reported to have lost the “Teresita” and Felix Fernandez lost the “Liliet.”

According to Prieto, at least eight fishermen were affected by the fire, including her own family.

Her cousin Carlos Moreira lost 2,100 traps and her fatherin-law Simeon Prieto lost 1,800 traps and a forklift. At least three other fishermen had their lobster traps, stone crab traps and forklifts reduced to rubble and ashes.

Marathon Fire Rescue responded to the early morning call, evacuated at least one civilian and started to attack the fire. Crews from Monroe County Fire Rescue arrived and helped establish additional water supply. U.S. 1 was closed for a short period.

“All the departments worked together to control the fire and push the fire to the north (Gulf of Mexico waters), confining and extinguishing the fire,” said Marathon Fire Chief John Johnson.

The source of the fire is under investigation. Meanwhile, the rest of the town has rallied.

The Marathon High School Class of 2018 will bag groceries at Publix on Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to the family of their fellow student, Aron Prieto. onroe County Fire Rescue’s new training facility on Grassy Key is almost complete. The new air compressor is up and running, the red “trucks” have covered parking space, and there’s a few finishing touches to put on the massive, 40-student training classroom. It replaces a ramshackle double-wide construction trailer.

“This is the best thing. This is my baby,” said Training Chief Charlie Mather, patting the high-capacity air compressor. “Before this we did all of our fills at the local dive shop.”

The firefighters can now carry longerlasting canisters of air that go a long way toward safety.

Earlier in the week, about two dozen would-be firefighters underwent the PAT, or Physical Agility Test. It involves a run, a climb up a ladder, then a six-minute test of carrying hoses and climbing stairs, sledge hammering, carrying a “loaded” hose charged with water, and dragging a dummy. That’s in addition to the written tests on emergency services plus the interview. It’s rigorous.

“We had about 50 sign up, and there are only 21 left,” said Lt. Mark Hemeyer, also of the training division.

The facility on Grassy Key serves the new recruits who must complete 400 to 500 hours of training for a Fire 2 certification, but also fresh employees required to train for about eight days before showing up at the fire house.

It also serves full-time firefighters for continuing education classes.

“Training is constant,” Mather said.

Firefighting departments and recruits from Islamorada and Marathon also use the facility to train, but with their own instructors.

Mather said Monroe County’s fire rescue has made leaps in terms of standardization in recent years and has raised its level of professionalism. And watching the applicants perform the tasks, the importance is immediately apparent — muscle memory and familiarization with the gear could be the difference between saving life and property or watching it burn.

“Back in the days, some trucks had one hose, some two,” said Mather, who accepted the job as training chief after a full career in Hialeah’s department. “But we are standardizing the fleet and equipment so one firefighter or EMT could serve at any of the fire houses up and down the Keys. The only difference will be the latitude and longitude.”

The grand opening of the $1.96 million facility is tentatively scheduled to coincide with the October meeting of the Board of County Commissioners in the Middle Keys.

va Putterman has conceived a new theme for Saturday nights at Havana Jack’s. And in the past few weeks, she’s been concocting syrups and infusing flavors into distilled spirits; to name a few: espresso and vanilla bean rum, cucumber gin, raspberry red chili vodka, and a bourbon infused with a flavor that makes it taste just like an old fashioned. The row of miniature glass coolers, and spouted bottles stuffed with fruits and herbs, are nothing less than eye candy.

“We will be serving sipping drinks and martinis,” said Putterman, a cosmopolitan mix of an American and French upbringing. “I say these drinks are made with time and love.” Or is that thyme and love?

Putterman invites guests to dress up a little, too. You can come in a nice sundress and a pair of sandals, or go with the LBD — Little Black Dress.

“Sometimes ladies like to dress up and put on a pair of heels. I do.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at MMS/MHS and why?

My biggest inspiration at MHS would have to be Coach Davis, the football and track coach at MHS and teacher of the CCC class. I admire how he is always optimistic in any hardship and puts everyone before himself in any circumstance.

I believe that the AP Environmental Science class taught by Ms. Cox has most prepared me for life after high school since we learned about our effects on the planet and how I can make my impact on Earth a positive one, rather than negative.
