Thanks to the city commissioners, the list for Key Westers to weigh in on is never short. (Batter, batter, swing batter.) The hot topic right now is parking garages.

Do we or don’t we build them in Key West? As always, the argument can go both ways, folks, a place to park or more three-story building(s) in Old Town? Will they ease congestion or just invite more? Whom would they help? Or whom would they hurt? So we asked locals …

Should we build parking garages in Old Town, Yea or Nay? “Yes, I certainly see a need for more parking, we need it,” said Danielle Sellers, a native, “But as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody, like businesses, then we need to reconsider.”

“Yes, but only if they are free,” said Jaime Martinez, “then maybe tourists will stop taking residential spaces.”

“No. We’re okay,” said Andy Ambrose “We have more important issues, like why don’t we consider turning Duval Street into a pedestrian walkway most of the time? That would be more productive.”

“Is there a need? Yes” said former Commissioner Barry Gibson “Is there a will? No. Similar to affordable housing, we need to find a solution but going forward is hard.”

“Better to have more parking,” said Peter Ryan “It’s one less thing for people to get angry about.”

ey West is a party town with one helluva party planner.

Nadene Grossman Orr has become the ultimate superhero organizing Key West festivals and events, and for the first time taking on the biggie, Fantasy Fest. The 2017-2018 season will be monumental for Orr, starting with Fantasy Fest and also the King & Queen kickoff event & Royal Coronation Ball. In April, she will tackle The Vintner’s Dinner and The Taste of Key West and lastly, in May, The Key West Songwriters Festival. No stranger to important occasions (793 weddings and counting), Orr’s company, We’ve Got The Keys, will now offer “incentive travel planning” for corporate and social groups. She isn’t just planning the party, she is making sure everyone comes to it as well. A Fantasy Fest Queen, or “Queenie,” in 2013, Orr is still reigning in Key West. A wife, mother, business owner and host to 100,000 Fantasy Fest goers, Orr certainly deserves an invisible jet and lasso.

What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything? The birth of my daughter Meredith is a true miracle … she will be 3 years old this month.

What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket list,” and one thing you did achieve? I’d like to do something musically famous and, since I’m not a musician, I have no idea how that is going to happen BUT it’s on my list nonetheless! I am incredibly proud that I followed my entrepreneurial spirit and took the leap starting my own business in 2004.

Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Kermit the Frog.

What is your nerdiest passion? Clipping coupons.

If you were invisible, what would you do in Key West? Sit in on meetings of big business owners and politicians in town. I like to know what makes then successful and what influences their actions.

WONDER WOMAN (How Nadine Grossman Orr should dress for Fantasy Fest)

What’s an exciting change to this year’s Fantasy Fest? My goal was to bring back creative costuming, art, and getting local businesses involved in the Street Fair on Friday and building floats for the parade. I’m having brilliant conversations with long-time participants such as Bourbon Street & 801, Hard Rock, Margaritaville, Ocean Key Resort and Key West Business Guild’s Headdress Ball. I’m thrilled to say some of this year’s new and returning event partners include Green Parrot, Kelly’s Caribbean, We Cycle & Zombie Bike Ride, The Florida Keys Council of the Arts, MARC House, The Smallest Parade, Mary Ellen’s, The Custom House, San Carlos Institute, The Studios of Key West, and so many more! Oh, and we are going to recycle Fantasy Fest Beads with the MARC House; stay tuned for more info on that!

How many weddings have you planned?

What was the worst disaster? I have 793 weddings under my belt! I have had a bride pass out three times during ceremony, groom fall through glass coffee table, a bride call off the wedding, a groom call off the wedding, a father of the bride call off the wedding and a dove release “poop” all over the bride. All. Over. But I also have so many wonderful couples whom I still keep in touch with and watch their families grow and catch up when they come back to visit Key West!

For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Walt Disney Finish these sentences: My friends and family would describe me as … funny, creative, connected, hard working, a great mom and busy!

My autobiography would be titled … “Confessions of a Key West Event Queen.”

One secret I shall never tell … what I’m really thinking while I have my “Game Face” on!

Ever since we won a Bubba, we get to sit with Bobby Mongelli and the cool kids in the cafeteria.

Note: Since last year’s Bubbas, Dodds, along with Elena Devers, Lea Moeller and Erin Stover-Sickmen have finally upgraded their look, ditching the “Goth” fashion choices. Dodds no longer sports a mohawk or black eyeliner, and all tongue baubles, nose clips and disc earrings have been removed from Studio employees.

It’s been a whirlwind. The money, the women, the beers ... it’s been hard to stay humble. But I continue to pour the finest beer and tell the worst jokes at The Porch.

I keep my Bubbas by my bed so my lady always knows that she is sleeping with the best bartender in Key West.

How will you win again?

This year I hope to take the crown yet again to solidify a “Bubba Threepeat.” Myself and Tricia Coyne of Firefly have cleared a wall for our upcoming Bubba Awards.

Hopefully the island doesn’t lose their collective mind and fail to nominate me.

If they do, it’s totally fake news. But even then ... I voted for Matt Sheehan anyway. My campaigning will mostly consist of bribery, underhanded tactics and full-on sabotage. n June 6, Governor Rick Scott signed Bill CS/HB 951, allowing residents outside of the city of Key West to run for the Keys Energy Services Utility Board of The City of Key West.

Previously the five-seat utility board included only residents of the city and the seats appeared only on the Key West ballot. In 2018, the first Key West seat will be up for grabs by a Monroe County resident living from Stock Island (outside the city limits) to the northeasternmost end of the Seven Mile bridge. The second seat will be available in 2020 and Monroe County will be voting for all five seats.

“The utility board already voted unanimously for the bill,” said senior board member Peter Batty. “I think it’s courageous of members to be giving up two seats. This sends the message that people at the mercy of utility companies should have representation.”

Batty has no expectations of the new law changing how the board operates.

“I think we have always been careful to keep our rates and services the same as others,” said Batty. “But this just gives people who use our services more of a say.”

The name, Utility Board of the City of Key West, will stay the same, since it is owned by the city. Seats were previously labeled as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and now will be called A, B, C, D and E. Residents of Key West are able to hold seats A, B and C, and residents of Monroe County will hold D and E. The supervisor of elections of Monroe County will handle the elections starting with seats A, B and D in 2018. Terms will still be four years.

During last election season, Batty recalls a couple of non-city residents expressing interest in running. Beth Ramsay-Vickrey, sister of Sheriff Rick Ramsay, has announced her intention to run for the board in 2018.

Equality march and rally takes place on June 11 The Equality March for Unity and Pride is a grassroots movement taking place Sunday, June 11 across the world that will mobilize the diverse LGBTQ+ communities to peacefully and clearly address concerns. In Key West, the Equality March immediately follows the annual Pride Parade starting from the Southernmost House at 4:30 p.m. and ending with a rally immediately following the parade at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The rally will feature Stuart Milk, a global human rights activist, and County Commissioner Heather Carruthers as speakers.

Literary walking tours throughout the summer The Key West Literary Seminar will be offering Literary Walking Tours every Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. throughout the summer from Key West library to Greene Street. Tours last about 90 minutes. Inspired by David A. Kaufelt’s original literary walking tour, the stroll features the former homes and favorite haunts of writers, like Tennessee Williams, Shel Silverstein, Elizabeth Bishop, and Robert Frost. ell, hello, my 1,000-pound, fourfooted, reptile friend, been here long? Actually, yes. Last week, a rather pot-bellied 7-foot American saltwater crocodile found itself newsworthy on Stock Island, but is this unusual?

Not really. Residents of the Keys have been living with crocodiles, whether knowingly or not, since the ’70s. “Florida Keys Crocodiles” even have their own Facebook page (1,200 followers) which shows sightings more like a yearbook page than a warning. While the shy crocodile appears menacing, really it’s just another layer to the unusual Keys’ animal collection. And, a little perspective: As of late, infected mosquitos have caused more harm in South Florida and around the world.

The American crocodile is on the endangered species list, allowing its population to swell from 200 in the ’70s to now more than 2,000 in South Florida. Aside from cars on U.S.1, the crocodile doesn’t have a lot of predators in the Keys (one was run over in March in Key Largo). In fact, old crocodile Cleatus, who spent 14 glorious years at Fort Jefferson with a clean record, was up and moved by human intervention. The jury is out on whether that was the right call since Cleatus never harmed anyone. Was he wrong for enjoying a free ham Sammy from visiting tourists acting like vending machines? Maybe yes, maybe no. But humans were certainly in wrong: do not feed the crocodiles; it’s illegal, with good reason.

“Swimming in the water or basking on the shore is normal biological behavior for a crocodile. It doesn’t indicate that the crocodile is aggressive or has lost its natural fear of people,” writes biologist Amanda West of

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The commission will only remove a croc if there is an “imminent threat” and generally if the animal is more than 9 feet long. Moving them isn’t always the best option; it stresses them out and if they can, they will return to their original home.

“I would say we get a handful of calls each year, maybe two to three, mostly in the Upper Keys,” said Becky Herrin from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, who refers all calls to the commission. The sheriff’s office has used social media to show off a croc or two. Remember the one swimming in the pool in Lower Matecumbe, January 2016? He all but sipped on a frozen margarita, he was so comfortable.

But then the cautionary tale dates back to March 2011 when two kayakers claimed to have been upturned, scratched and one bitten by a croc in Key Largo.

THE FWC HAS HANDY BROCHURES ABOUT LIVING WITH CROCS WITH A FEW GOLDEN RULES: • Always keep pets on a leash when around water and instruct family members to stay 10 feet from the water’s edge or a minimum of 3 feet above the water (if on a dock).

• If recreating in the water, only do so during daylight hours. Do not swim or stand in the water between dusk and dawn, as this is when alligators and crocodiles normally hunt.

• Don’t throw fish scraps or other food (bird food or fish food) in the water. This will teach the crocodiles that your area is a source of free food and they will frequent your area more often.

inger-songwriter Nick Norman has been living and performing In Key West for more than 12 years. He has recorded four CDs, performs each year at the Key West Songwriters Festival, and performs regularly six days a week, about 300 performances a year. He is the founder of The Sunday Ramble, held regularly at the Key West Theater, and was instrumental in helping transform the Key West Theater into the successful music concert venue in Key West that it is today.

Norman will be performing a special rooftop concert “Acoustic Sunset Show,” on Sunday June 11, at 7:30 p.m. on the Blue Macaw rooftop. He will be performing his originals, many familiar to his fans as well as some new ones.

Working with him in organizing this concert are his wife Kelly as marketing director, and local business Coast as major sponsor. Norman sees this concert as similar in concept to the Ramble Room Sessions concerts that he launched at the

After the concert, Norman leaves for a short tour June 15-17, for a series of performances in South Carolina, and will be joined by Derik Reay and Jeff Clark. Norman performs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Blue Macaw, Tuesdays, at the Smoking Tuna with the Naturals; and Fridays at the Lazy Gecko. Norman will be joined by the Naturals to perform at the Green Parrot soundcheck on Wednesday, June 28.

Nick has also been writing songs for his new CD recording. “I am thankful my wife Kelly has taken over managing and promoting my music so I can focus on my music,” he said.

Nick spoke about recording versus performing. “We live in a unique place (Key West) where we can sell our CDs to our customers who want to walk away with our music. In the end the investment is the live performance opportunity, getting people to come to your shows and having a quality product that represents your live performance. It’s not possible to make money off the recording. It’s more of an advertisement.”

artenders usually hate making frozen drinks, but Blue Macaw bartender Jenn Stefanacci doesn’t mind it so much. She says two of her favorite drinks to serve are frozen, the strawberry lemonade and the creamsicle. But, if she has to take her pick on a drink, the Bloody Mary bar is where it is at.

With hundreds of hot sauces, bacon, beers, green beans and more to garnish the Bloodies, the possibilities are endless. “If you really want, I can even get you some shrimp, too,” she said.

She likes the uniqueness of Blue Macaw. “It’s a fun, new, fast-paced bar,” she said. “I love Fran and the people I work with.”

Originally from Tom’s River, New Jersey, she said she planned on a six-month stay with one suitcase, but island life called her name and she’s been on the island for seven years.

“The people are weird, awesome, amazing, and real all at the same time,” she said. “They said come as you are, I came as I was. This place has made me whole.”

When she isn’t bartending, she’s spending time with her son Finn, bike riding, and helping with fundraising efforts at May Sands Montessori School.

he Castaways for Cancer will be making their 18th kayaking trip from Key Biscayne all the way to Key West next week. They launch on Saturday, June 10 and divide the trip into segments — stopping for one night each at Elliott Key, Key Largo, Islamorada, Grassy Key, Bahia Honda, Sugarloaf and finishing up at Smathers Beach around 2 p.m. on Friday, June 16.

In 2017, the group has raised about $70,000 for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life challenge. In past years, the team has been the No. 1 fundraiser for the challenge in Florida. In the 18 years the Castaways have been paddling, they’ve raised more than $900,000. Yes, almost $1 million.

Eleven of the members will paddle the full distance, including Marathon’s Suzy Curry, a breast cancer survivor. Joining them for

pending more than 40 years working with wastewater on Stock Island, Mark A. Burkemper is the type of guy who can say he’s seen it all. Set to retire this month, Burkemper will have plenty of time for his many stories – hint: he’s found a treasure or two in the water. Serving as lead operator at the Stock Island location from 1983-2017, Burkemper will leave not only his history but also his name. Commemorating his legacy, on May 26, Key West Resort Utilities dedicated the new $5.2 million Mark A. Burkemper Wastewater Treatment Plant in his honor.

“Mark has dedicated his life to keeping the waters of the Keys beautiful. He is a pioneer in Keys wastewater, having treated over 5 billion gallons of wastewater during his career,” said Ed Castle of Weiler Engineering.

Burkholder’s wastewater career started in 1976 as a Biological Aide for the Florida Department of Natural Resources (FDNR) Marine Research Laboratory for the Keys. Then from 1980-2000, as owner and Laboratory Director of Davis Water Analysis, Inc., he continued doing research work

with FDNR to operating wastewater treatment plants throughout the Keys.

From 2000-2003, Burholder worked for contract wastewater operators Synagro and Keys Environmental Inc., 20032009. Finally he finished his career with the Utility (KW Resort Utilities Corp.

KWRU) from 2009-2017.

“Mark has contributed to the success of KWRU on so many different levels; mentoring new plant operators, his leadership, or his take charge attitude in getting things done when others can’t or won’t. His good nature and incredible work ethic will be sorely missed,” said Chris Johnson, President KWRU Burkemper will officially treat his last gallon of wastewater on June 16. His co-workers will remember Mark’s favorite (adapted) quote from “A League of Their Own,” “There’s no crying in baseball wastewater,” capturing his old-school attitude toward his career and life in general.

THE NEXT POET LAUREATES Winners of the 2017 Robert Frost Poetry Contest

P

oet Robert Frost famously wrote “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” He won the Congressional Gold Medal and read at JFK’s inauguration in 1961, so being a poet actually did make all the difference. Funded by the Jeane and Jessie Porter Fund at the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, each year Keys kids find the poet inside themselves and try their pen for money prizes. Last Sunday, the winners were awarded at The Studios Of Key West and from the subtle words emerged a worthy group of young poets.

Celebrating the Battle of Midway

ast Monday, the NAS honored and celebrated Battle of Midway which occurred 75 years ago on June 3-4 ,1942, when the Pacific Fleet outmaneuvered Japanese troops, changing the outcome of World War II. This historical and decisive battle proved the Navy’s monumental impact on war and the naval fleet’s enduring necessity. The ceremony featured remarks from NAS Key West Executive Officer Cmdr. Gregory Brotherton, Command Chaplain Lt. Scott Mason, and Master Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) James King, NAS Key West’s Honor Guard, a recap of the battle and a bell-ringing.
