City of Marathon considers projects SARA MATTHIS

hree of the five members of the Marathon City Council were apparently remorseful after pulling the plug for a development at the west end of the airport last month. The project called for 6 market rate homes and 9 affordable homes. The council initially denied the request over concerns about additional traffic at the intersection of U.S.1 and Aviation Boulevard and access for a nearby homeowner. The Council also noted the applicant does not have permits in place, although the applicant said he needed approval from the city before the county would grant interlocal permits from its lottery pool.

Councilman Steve Cook brought the matter back before council on May 23.

“I think I allowed things to shut off too soon,” he said.

“We want to encourage affordable housing but [the plans] may require some adjustment,” said Mayor Dan Zieg.

Then the council turned its attention to a stalled project, Boat Works Investments located on 39th Street. It consists of 52 development rights for market rate units and 11 rights for affordable housing units.

Amadeo D’Ascanio appeared before the board asking for another extension of the development agreement, originally approved in 2006. The matter was revisited in 2016, when the council strongly advised him to make some progress on the development.

“The developer has not fulfilled a single portion of the responsibilities outlined in the agreement, even after we gave a one-year grace period,”

said Zieg.

“I think you are missing the point,” D’Ascanio said. “The point is that we are a hardworking family. Nothing has been given to us. We went through hard times during [the recession] but we still own the property and have made every payment. We don’t want to commit financial suicide. When it’s time for it, we will move ahead. We are actively looking at ideas.”

Councilmember Mark Senmartin suggested the developer act in good faith by building at least one affordable unit to show progress. “I don’t think that’s unreasonable,” he said.

After discussion with city staff, the council agreed to another extension — largely because a financial partner often prefers to invest in a project that already has some degree of approval from the city.

The council also approved an extension for the planned 24 unit extension of Holiday Inn Express.

“They have been working on environmental permits for several years, specific to the site, specific to mitigation,” said Planning Director George Garrett. “The applications and permits are ready for approval. They are moving forward with the proposed project.”

In other news: • The council directed staff to start drafting a resolution changing the city’s code enforcement from a volunteer board to a paid special magistrate. The language will allow for the council to hear disputed cases.

• The city returned $400,000 to developers of the duplexes on Sombrero Beach Road after the company met its goal to provide actual affordable housing.

What’s the most useless piece of trivia you know?

“You know how birds fly south for the winter in a V formation,” said electrician Charlie Brown, “Well, do you know why one line is longer than the other?” His answer: because there are more birds on that side.

“I know stuff about Tiger Woods,” said Jen Tacey, who answered a golf question right. “The fact that he can sing the National Anthem backwards is also very awesome.”

“If you fart constantly for six years and nine months, there is enough gas produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb,” said Brass Monkey bartender Rodney Altman from team Loud Mouths. “Just in case you didn’t know.”

“That little plastic piece at the end of your shoe string, it’s called an aglet,” Kaitlin Jackson of Dolphin Research Center said.

She had to come in and save the day for fellow participant Troy Meadows, who had no useless information stored in his head.

Mind blown: “Potatoes have more chromosomes than humans,” said Bayshore Clothing’s Teri Childress, whose team came in first place. “It’s true. Boom!” After careful research, it was revealed potatoes in fact have 48 chromosomes, while humans only have 46.

THROUGH THE LENS OF A STORM CHASER

O

n the morning of August 29th of 2005, Hurricane Katrina plowed into the shores of Louisiana and Mississippi. The killer storm that ravaged the coastal areas would become one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes ever. The images and videos are etched in our memories; none more so, than the footage of a Holiday Inn systematically destroyed in Gulfport, Mississippi.

The footage would become the marquee footage of the storm’s devastation … and it was shot by Key Largo native and professional storm chaser, Mike Theiss.

The following year, his film earned him an Emmy nomination, and would go on to win awards from the National Press Photographers Association and Photo District News. You can view the footage, along with all of Theiss’ storm chasing videos, on his YouTube channel — Ultimate Chase.

You’ve been fascinated by hurricane for most of your life, do you remember your first hurricane?

Hurricane Floyd in 1987. The eye came over my house and from then on I was hooked. Anything I wrote about in school that was science-related was about hurricanes.

Aside from your first, which storms made the biggest impression as a kid?

Hurricane Andrew. The storm made a huge impact on me — I couldn’t believe how something could be so powerful. Afterwards I just had to learn more about it.

When did you begin your career as a photographer for National Geographic?

In 2003, it was the perfect combination of my passion for photography and extreme weather.

How many tropical cyclones have you documented over your career?

I’ve documented the landfall of more than 40 tropical cyclones, which is pretty extensive in the storm chasing world.

Aside from tropical cyclones, you also take time ever year to chase down tornados in the Midwest. Ever have any close calls?

Yes. The famous El Reno Tornado in 2013 was a real wake up call. The Tornado went for 1 mile wide to 2.5 miles wide in seconds and accelerated its forward advancement. Mix that in with bumper-to-bumper traffic blocking all the escape routes and I found myself in a real pickle.

You have the distinct honor of having captured the fastest wind gusts on video, what was that like?

In 2004, I captured footage of 155 mph wind gusts shredding a Charlotte Harbor gas station during Hurricane Charley from inside my car. It’s some of my most dramatic footage.

Your footage of Hurricane Katrina from a beachside hotel in Gulfport, Mississippi has become synonymous with its deadly destruction. How did you decide on the location?

I first documented the storm in Ft. Lauderdale where it made landfall. I followed the storm up the coast all the way to Gulfport. When I first spoke to the manager of the hotel I was staying at, he said that engineers had designed the hotel in the aftermath of Hurricane Camille. They built it with breakaway walls and pilings, so that it would give easily and relieve any pressure from rushing water.

What do you remember the most from the entire ordeal?

It was so loud, it was unbelievable.

People were terrified and crying, they thought the entire building was going to collapse. I remember being terrified but thinking that I had put myself there — so I might as well document it.

The footage shows that when the storm surge rose, you retreated back into the stairwell and higher floors. How high did the water rise?

At its highest, about 28 feet, and that’s not including the waves on top of the surge. It was then that I understood how serious the situation was and began looking for a roof access to get out. And then all of water that had come in receded within an hour. It was like someone pulled the drain and the water went away.

What was the scene like after the storm?

We went out and started walking around and everything was totally destroyed. It was 99 percent destroyed, and the only reason I don’t say completely, is because the one building left standing was the one we had stayed in. The only thing left from the Waffle House I had just eaten at the day before was a couple chairs bolted to the ground. That was it.

Because of the damage to the roads in and out of Gulfport, you were stuck in the area for a few days after the storm.

What were those days like?

For those days I was stuck there, we would walk around and you could smell the death in the air.

It’s something I’ll never forget.

I feel lucky that I survived, and after that I realized that maybe I don’t need to push it to the end.

But I did, however, want to show and share with people how bad hurricanes are, and that it’s not a game being out there.

What’s next on your storm chasing bucket list?

To document a Category 5 and embed the H.E.R.V. (Hurricane Eyewall Research Vehicle) inside to record the wind speeds and barometric pressure. I would never wish for such a powerful storm to occur, but if it does occur, I want to be there to document it.

What advice do you have for locals for this year’s Hurricane Season?

My advice this Hurricane Season would be to stay stocked up on the usual necessities, make sure your batteries are not expired.

If you don’t have an emergency kit, I’d say get one and if you already have one, freshen it up.

In the Keys we could be trapped for weeks before bridges are repaired. I highly evacuation if a bad one is coming …

6 BIG WINS IN STATE LEGISLATURE Rep. Holly Raschein breaks it down

State representative Holly Raschein said she is happy the legislative season is over and be back home in the Keys. She can hang her hat on some great successes that will be affecting Monroe County soon in a positive way. Raschein has one more year as a junior Representative before becoming a “senior” until 2020, when her term is up.

1. The Florida Keys Stewardship Act is number one. It will be receiving $13.3 million dollars this year that will be used for conservation and protection of Monroe County land and water quality. “The State recognizes that our environment is tied to our economy, so this is a big win for us.”

Raschein, who initially sponsored the Stewardship Act in 2016, is now putting it to work providing funds for Monroe County mobile vessel pump out service, Mote Marine, Farm Share Program, fighting against Laurel Wilt disease in the Redland area (which affects the avocado industry) and a new treatment plant in Homestead — all to help the Keys keys ecology.

2. Bill 425 was not passed. The bill would have changed vacation rental laws allowing more state control. Raschein voted against it multiple times and succeeded. “We have a different situation in the Keys,” said Raschein “We need a balance between tourists and people who live here and our rental laws are tailored for just that.” Raschein wants Monroe County to have “home rule” over its own rental laws, so defeating that bill was certainly a plus.

4. Monroe County won big time gaining more uniform standards for anchoring and mooring vessels statewide. “Monroe County and the City of Marathon were big players in this. We were able to bring in everyone from the marine industry, everyone had skin in the game.” The bill addresses mooring fields, boat yards, local control over pump out proof, and more tools to deal with atrisk and derelict vessels.

5. Craft distilleries — different than craft breweries — also received a boost. They can now sell six different varieties of whatever is distilling (rum, vodka, moonshine). The previous limit was two. This adjustment can allow local businesses to grow and increase product sales. “We want to help locals maintain and grow their business,” said Raschein.

6. And lastly, Florida is actually at the forefront of a nationwide movement by eliminating the tax on female hygiene products.

Ladies, Florida has abolished the “Tampon Tax!” “Yes, that was due,” said Raschein.

Some women between the ages of 15 and 50 would say it was “scary overdue.”

3. “Uber! Woohoo!” said Raschein, who has always been a proponent of ride share. “The transportation network is transforming at rapid pace.” Raschein credits the bill with providing a good “backbone” to making sure that proper insurance and protections are in place to safeguard drivers and riders. And is Uber on the way? “They are planning a diplomatic entrance very soon,” said Raschein.

Gov. Rick Scott is expected to sign the bill into law July 1.

enna Moeller kind of does it all.

She’s a Monroe County Sheriff’s Officer, rescue pup mom, and a second-place conch fritter eating world champion.

But, her spearfishing skills are also something to envy as a five-time That’s What She Shot Spearfishing tournament winner.

Moeller’s twin sister Lea founded the spearfishing tournament, now going into its sixth year the weekend of June 9. The tournament raises funds for Womankind, a local medical center providing family planning and primary health care to people of all income levels.

More than $25,000 has been raised to help offset grant money specifically for the mammogram program. “Without this money, the program would have ended.

Without Womankind, our community would be a different place,” said Lea, who sits on the board of directors of the nonprofit.

Jenna and Lea grew up spearfishing off of Key West, “I was just looking for something our friends could do one weekend and there weren’t any local spearfishing tournaments anymore,” said Lea. “It’s just snowballed from there.”

Jenna packs up the coolers with ice and heads out on the water, while Lea stay inshore to set up for the weigh-in party. Jenna’s favorite species to target: hogfish are the tastiest but grouper are the most fun to hunt.

“Lea masterminds the whole thing, I am lucky I get to get out on the water and play,” said Jenna.

Local spearos will be gracing the tournament again and South Florida is always well represented with shooters coming from Ft. Lauderdale and Tampa for the event. Last year, woman freediver Cheyenne Lee out of Stuart even shot a world record kingfish during the tournament; but some of the big name local spearos won’t be involved this year, opening up the prize table to novice shooters, because they are working the event.

“When I started this, there weren’t a lot of spearfishing charters in the area, now a lot of our original shooters have their own spearfishing businesses and are booked that weekend,” said Lea.

Tournament helps Womankind

The tournament brings in about 75 shooters a year and will go back to the original aggregate total of heaviest grouper, snapper, and hogfish, with invasive lionfish counting as extra points. There will be first and second place in men’s and women’s for tanks and freediving. There is also a junior’s division and lionfish division.

Last year, the event included jacks and pelagics, but after careful consideration, Lea decided to go back to the original format.

“Spearfishing has become a very trendy sport,” she said. “I want us to be conscious about what we are shooting and promoting sustainability in the way we are harvesting fish.”

Both the Moellers said they are looking forward to the weather the weekend of the tournament. “It’s supposed to be windy this weekend, but looking ahead, there’s beautiful weather on the horizon for tournament weekend,” said Lea.

Keys drivers and what drives them …

W

hile driving up and down the Keys to meetings and gigs, I get to observe firsthand some Amazing Feats of Motor Vehicle Operation. Things can get pretty amusing (and downright scary) at times, especially when I find myself in part of a train — a long line of cars usually led by someone driving way under the speed limit.

These train leaders, through their lack of awareness or consideration of the dozens of impatient followers behind them, often inspire Amazing Feats of Motor Vehicle Operation! One such train leader I recently followed on a drive to Islamorada was but the most recent example of such an inspiration. The vehicle was a foreign-made crossover with a vanity plate from a landlocked state that read “LVTHBCH.” (Love The… Beach! That’s it — Beach!

What were you thinking?!)

This particular erratically slow train leader inspired many drivers to perform Amazing Feats of Motor Vehicle Operation that weren’t quite legal, and were very annoying to the sane drivers among us. The Sheriff’s Office has planted a number of those roadside message signs along Lower and Upper Matecumbe Keys advising that the median “suicide” lane is not for passing. It didn’t seem to stop too many impatient followers of this particular train leader. Cars, SUVs, even a big dually pulling a large boat all used the central turn lane median to pass the Beach Loving train leader. So many drivers used this Amazing Feat

of Motor Vehicle Operation that day… I was at least 15 cars behind this vehicle on the Long key Bridge; by the time I hit Upper Matecumbe, I was directly behind him and got the license plate embedded in my brain (and thankfully not my front bumper).

Anyone who drives around the Keys has probably seen those bumper stickers that read, “Watch For Motorcycles.” I know that the majority of bikers are law-abiding defensive drivers, mostly out of the strong desire to survive. Some, however, act as if they have the deed to the road in their saddlebags and that all other drivers are simply obstacles in their path.

One such rider performed his Amazing Feat of Motor Vehicle Operation as he passed me on the stretch between Coco Plum and Grassy Key. I was driving the speed limit — 55 — when I saw this blur approaching from the rear. I heard the Doppler shift as his straight-piped Harley got around me and back into the lane just in time to avoid the car coming from the opposing direction. I hit the horn to signal my disapproval, and what followed was an Amazing Gesture of Motor Vehicle Operation. I have never seen someone raise Mr. Single Digit Finger Puppet in as strong and graceful a gesture as he did that day. Poetry in motion … no helmet required.

While coming back from Islamorada on Long Key Bridge last Saturday around midnight, I encountered another two-wheeler as he performed an Amazing Feat of Motor Vehicle Operation. Some young (I assume) dude on a crotch rocket passed me at close to 90. There was an oncoming car in the northbound lane, and as the crotch rocket pilot swerved to get back into the southbound lane, the vehicle ahead of me braked. The biker was lucky not to have become a statistic.

These aren’t isolated incidents.

They happen every day, at all hours.

And when you hear or read about yet another accident with fatalities on U.S.1, remind yourself that the little bit of patience you exercise might save several lives. Be careful out there.

COMMERCE CORNER DOLPHIN RESEARCH CENTER Dolphin Research Center is a nonprofit marine mammal education and research facility open daily to the public. In addition to the daily activities, DRC is committed to providing educational programs for schools, groups and individuals, and are a leader in marine mammal research worldwide. They are also the licensed manatee rescue team for the Florida Keys.

Jayne and Mandy Rodriguez founded the nonprofit Dolphin Research Center in 1984. However, this location has been the home to dolphins since the late 50s – including to dolphins that starred in the original “Flipper” series.

“Our goal is to teach as many people, and learn as much as possible, about the amazing animals that live here,” said CEO and President Rita Irwin. “We believe that you can connect with the dolphins and sea lions here and this life changing experience will inspire you to care more about them, their wild counterparts, and the ocean environment.”

When visiting DRC, the guest becomes part of the mission to teach, learn and care about marine mammals and the environment. As a nonprofit, they are funded by memberships and donations, as well as daily visits. With a membership, admission is free for the year. Bring the kids by this summer to see dolphins and sea lions and also to play in the sprayground.

DRC is committed to being a good community partner – donating thousands of dollars annually for admissions or programs for other nonprofit organization’s fundraising efforts. They also partner with Monroe County schools by offering free field trips, outreaches, Ocean Celebration Day and other events.

Mote’s new center opens in Summerland

t took a lot of work by a lot of people to bring the Elizabeth Moore IC2R3 (International Center of Coral Research and Rehabilitation) center to fruition, according to Mote Marine Laboratory’s Michael Crosby at the ribbon cutting ceremony this past Thursday. He compared the amount of cement used in the Category 5-rated $7 million building to the weight of 6,000 manatees. The new location will be an attraction for scientists around the world, to not only research and rehabilitate coral, but also study ocean acidification and climate change.

ATHLETE ELITE SUMMER CAMP MARATHON For the second year, Keys Strength & Conditioning in Marathon is having a special camp for student athletes in sixth grade to seniors, and even young collegiate athletes. It focuses on overall fitness and will rotate locations between the beach, the fitness studio and the park. Athletes will see improvements in overall endurance, speed, strength, agility, power, coordination, accuracy, balance and flexibility. Workouts will be lead by Elizabeth Kuck, Chris Kuck, and Jordan Dewhirst.

Camps are from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Monday to Friday. Campers should bring water, and be dressed to workout (no sandals).

cause it’s more about not feeling so good about myself than actually feeling alright.” Mason would not share the reason he wrote the song, rumored to be because of his on-and-off relationship with Traffic but left it at this: “It’s an unrequited love song.”

On tour, he will be singing all the songs from his first original album “Alone Together Again” with hits like “Only You and I Know You” and “World in Changes.” Mason also plays his music tributes such as “All Along the Watch Tower,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” and “We Just Disagree.”

When guitarist Jim Krueger wrote “We Just Disagree,” he knew Mason should sing it. Mason put it on his 1977 album “Let It Flow,” and it became his single biggest hit with simple lyrics like “There ain’t no good guy, there ain’t no bad guy, There’s only you and me and we just disagree.” And again, another unrequited love song for Mason and lasting hit song.

Playing music since he was 18, a young Mason teamed up with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form the band Traffic in the late ’60s. He then went on to record “Alone Together” and “Let It Flow” as a solo singer songwriter. But he collaborated and played guitar on many great albums such as Rolling Stones’ “Beggars Banquet” and Paul McCartney’s (Wings) “Listen to What The Man Said” and his acoustic guitar leads before Jimi Hendrix’s begins in “All Along The Watchtower.”

He was inducted into the the Roll ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of the band Traffic.

ave Mason isn’t the most recognizable name in music but his songs have been on your radio and lips for decades.

Mason’s upcoming gig at The Key West Theater on Thursday, June 8 backs the notion “There’s too much to do before I die” from his hit song “Feelin’ Alright.” Since the ’70s, those were the most conjoined words ever sung, first recorded by his band Traffic and then made even more famous when re-recorded by Joe Cocker and countless other artists.

ore than 100 racers turned out for the annual Memorial Day triathlon race in Marathon at Sombrero Beach. Organized largely by the D’Ascanio family, with a legion of helpers, this is a very family friendly race and a really good time. That said, it’s an incredibly well organized race — staggered starts for the sprint and mini-sprint distances, professional timing and photography, water, food, music and a very coordinated transition plan. With more than 140 beers in the lounge’s portfolio, Torres is in charge of creating and maintaining the everrotating selection. But, even with such a selection of beers to choose from, his favorite thing to make is “Hemingway’s Haze,” a traditional Key West daiquiri just like Ernest Hemingway used to drink.

With locally made Papa’s Pilar Rum, fresh squeezed limes, and simple syrup, Torres says it’s three simple ingredients just like Papa used to drink back in the day. “It’s one of our signature cocktails,” he said. “It’s the real Keys drink, not mojitos and rumrunners.”

His go-to tapas pick: roasted cauliflower. Made with a house curry sauce, he says it’s not to be missed. Another favorite are the “lollipop” chicken wings. Try the asian version because they are very good.

The Key West High School 1999 graduate says his favorite part of working at “the joint” is his coworkers because of their amazing work ethic, and when he isn’t slinging beers and signature cocktails, he can be found at Marlin’s games in Miami.

n Saturday, the Florida Keys SPCA animal shelter and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office teamed up to wash some dogs for a good cause.

n the early 1900s, Adderley town was a bustling little Bahamian settlement with 10 houses, a community kitchen and church services held in the founder’s living room. After years of wear and tear, hurricanes, and the elements, the only house left standing was George Adderley’s conch shell built home — the town’s little “city hall” of sorts — but it needed help.

With the direction of Crane Point’s CEO Charlotte Quinn, the Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust board, and Old World Walls and Ceilings owner Randy Clark, the house is back to its original grandeur after an eight-week renovation.

Last week, the restored house received the highest award for Outstanding Achievement in Restoration and Rehabilitation given by State of Florida’s Trust for Historic Preservation in St. Petersburg. Clark also received the Master Craftsmanship Award, which hasn’t been awarded to anyone since 2013.

“We were honored with this because we brought it back to its original state,” said Quinn. “We even ordered the lime from England, because they had the same type of lime that Adderley used in 1904 when he built the home.”

Bringing it back to its original state wasn’t easy. Clark and his crew burnt the conch shells, added the lime, and used the rock, sand and water aggregate that Adderley would have used.

Then, they took the shutters and doors back to the original white color before fixing up the community kitchen and adding historical details to the inside of the home.

The Adderley House is open for tours Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the museum to the house, or trolleys run throughout the day.

Sign up begins for summer soccer The City of Marathon Parks and Recreation Department is hosting an eight-week summer soccer program from children ages 4 to 10 years old from June 13 through August 3 at Marathon Community Park. Practices and games will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The program is $40 if registration is completed by Friday, June 9, after that, the price increases to $60. Registration can be found at ci.marathon.fl.us. There will also be an in-person registration on Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to noon at the park.

‘Build a Better World’ is summer reading theme Children will explore all things science and conservation during Marathon library’s “Build a Better World” free summer reading program.

Registration is open now and the program runs from Wednesday, June 7 to August 12. Activities will include presentations by Kelly Grinter from the Marathon Wild Bird Center and Elizabeth Moore from Seascience and will include story times, parties, giveaways, drawings, and more. Best Summer Story told at Story Slam Story Slam will take place on Friday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Marathon Community Theatre. This month’s topic is Best Summer Story and the winner will take home $50 for their five-minute tale. Admission is $10.

he guys at BD Outdoors all agree that the key to any successful fishing trip is local knowledge, and that’s when the idea for the TV show started. “We kind of just all fell together,” said local charter fishing guide Rush Maltz, who knew his co-host Ali Hussainy through the late Jose Wejebe, founder of “Spanish Fly” show.

“We seek out the fishing guide that knows the destination the best,” said Maltz, who has travelled to some of the hottest fishing spots around the world.

Maltz says he has met some of the most diverse group of people in the fishing industry since this started, in places like Guatemala, Louisiana, San Diego, and Baja Mexico. But, he says, nothing beats the fishing right here around the Florida Keys.

Just a couple weeks ago, the two hosts met up with local fishing guide Nate Wheeler of Waypoint Fishing to film a tarpon series at Bahia Honda. “It’s great to look at how other people do things even in our own backyard,” said Maltz.

With show names like “Tuna Town,” and “Smart Fish,” his favorite thing so far was catching a 489-pound swordfish. “It was a heck of a fight from 1 to 7 p.m.,” he said. “Gladiator of the Deep” is a nineminute short film exhibiting the fight on the website.

‘Local Knowledge’ airs Saturdays at 7 a.m. on Destination America.

The show can also be streamed on service providers like Roku, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and Apple TV. There is also a Local Knowledge app with all the hot bites streaming.
