What Bubbas categories are missing?

“Best Call Center Employee, it’s the person who answers the tourists’ questions for boat trips,” said Dotti Clifford “They have to answer questions like, ‘Where do you rent a bathing suit?’” That does deserve an award.

“Best Volunteer of the Year,” said Shawn Montgomery while subtly (not-so-subtly) pointing to Ginger King, former Fantasy Fest Queen.

“Best Non-Nude exhibitionist,” said Muriel performer Scott McCarthy. “Well, mostly clothed, most of the time, but maybe not all the time.”

The Muriels would win, hands down.

“The Best Place to Propose,” said Dea Celani “There are far more options than wedding venues.” Absolutely.

“If there is Best Bartender, then there should be Best Server,” said Jeanette Holmes a server at The New York Pasta Garden. Have to admit, that’s pretty valid point.

T

he guys at BD Outdoors all agree that the key to any successful fishing trip is local knowledge, and that’s when the idea for the TV show started. “We kind of just all fell together,” said local charter fishing guide Rush Maltz, who knew his co-host Ali Hussainy through the late Jose Wejebe, founder of “Spanish Fly” show.

“Local Knowledge,” now in its second season of filming, has the two veteran fishermen in front of the camera. Maltz captains Odyssea out of Key West, while Hussainy, from San Diego, is the president of BDoutdoors. com, one of the largest online fishing websites in the country.

“We seek out the fishing guide that knows the destination the best,” said Maltz, who has travelled to some of the hottest fishing spots around the world.

“The one who knows the best fishing spots, the best restaurants, knows their hometown better than anyone.

It’s about the culture of fishing.”

Maltz says he has met some of the most diverse group of people in the fishing industry since this started, in places like Guatemala, Louisiana, San Diego, and Baja Mexico. But, he says, nothing beats the fishing right here around the Florida Keys.

Just a couple weeks ago, the two hosts met up with local fishing guide Nate Wheeler of Waypoint Fishing to film a tarpon series at Bahia Honda. “It’s great to look at how other people do things even in our own backyard,” said Maltz.

With show names like “Tuna Town,” and “Smart Fish,” his favorite thing so far was catching a 489-pound swordfish. “It was a heck of a fight from 1 to 7 p.m.,” he said. “Gladiator of the Deep” is a nineminute short film exhibiting the fight on the website.

‘Local Knowledge’ airs Saturdays at 7 a.m. on Destination America.

The show can also be streamed on service providers like Roku, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and Apple TV. There is also a Local Knowledge app with all the hot bites streaming.

6 BIG WINS IN STATE LEGISLATURE Rep. Holly Raschein breaks it down

State representative Holly Raschein said she is happy the legislative season is over and be back home in the Keys. She can hang her hat on some great successes that will be affecting Monroe County soon in a positive way. Raschein has one more year as a junior Representative before becoming a “senior” until 2020, when her term is up.

1. The Florida Keys Stewardship Act is number one. It will be receiving $13.3 million dollars this year that will be used for conservation and protection of Monroe County land and water quality. “The State recognizes that our environment is tied to our economy, so this is a big win for us.” Raschein, who initially sponsored the Stewardship Act in 2016, is now putting it to work providing funds for Monroe County mobile vessel pump out service, Mote Marine, Farm Share Program, fighting against Laurel Wilt disease in the Redland area (which affects the avocado industry) and a new treatment plant in Homestead — all to help the Keys keys ecology.

2. Bill 425 was not passed. The bill would have changed vacation rental laws allowing more state control. Raschein voted against it multiple times and succeeded. “We have a different situation in the Keys,” said Raschein “We need a balance between tourists and people who live here and our rental laws are tailored for just that.”

Raschein wants Monroe County to have “home rule” over its own rental laws, so defeating that bill was certainly a plus.

3. “Uber! Woohoo!” said Raschein, who has always been a proponent of ride share. “The transportation network is transforming at rapid pace.” Raschein credits the bill with providing a good “backbone” to making sure that proper insurance and protections are in place to safeguard drivers and riders. And is Uber on the way? “They are planning a diplomatic entrance very soon,” said Raschein. Gov. Rick Scott is expected to sign the bill into law July 1.

4. Monroe County won big time gaining more uniform standards for anchoring and mooring vessels statewide. “Monroe County and the City of Marathon were big players in this. We were able to bring in everyone from the marine industry, everyone had skin in the game.” The bill addresses mooring fields, boat yards, local control over pump out proof, and more tools to deal with at-risk and derelict vessels.

5. Craft distilleries — different than craft breweries — also received a boost. They can now sell six different varieties of whatever is distilling (rum, vodka, moonshine). The previous limit was two. This adjustment can allow local businesses to grow and increase product sales. “We want to help locals maintain and grow their business,” said Raschein.

6. And lastly, Florida is actually at the forefront of a nationwide movement by eliminating the tax on female hygiene products. Ladies, Florida has abolished the “Tampon Tax!” “Yes, that was due,” said Raschein. Some women between the ages of 15 and 50 would say it was “scary overdue.”

FEELIN’ ALRIGHT? Dave Mason plays at the Key West Theater

ist Jim Krueger wrote “We Just Disagree,” he knew Mason should sing it. Mason put it on his 1977 album “Let It Flow,” and it became his single biggest hit with simple lyrics like “There ain’t no good guy, there ain’t no bad guy, There’s only you and me and we just disagree.”

And again, another unrequited love song for Mason and lasting hit song.

Playing music since he was 18, a young Mason teamed up with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form the band Traffic in the late ’60s. He then went on to record “Alone Together” and “Let It Flow” as a solo singer songwriter. But he collaborated and played guitar on many great albums such as Rolling Stones’ “Beggars Banquet” and Paul McCartney’s (Wings) “Listen to What The Man Said” and his acoustic guitar leads before Jimi Hendrix’s begins in “All Along The Watchtower.” He was inducted into the the Roll ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of the band Traffic.

ave Mason isn’t the most recognizable name in music but his songs have been on your radio and lips for decades.

Mason’s upcoming gig at The Key West Theater on Thursday, June 8 backs the notion “There’s too much to do before I die” from his hit song “Feelin’ Alright.” Since the ’70s, those were the most conjoined words ever sung, first recorded by his band Traffic and then made even more famous when re-recorded by Joe Cocker and countless other artists.

“It’s a simple song,” said Mason. “The original title had a question mark at the end, because it’s more about not feeling so good about myself than actually feeling alright.” Mason would not share the reason he wrote the song, rumored to be because of his onand-off relationship with Traffic but left it at this: “It’s an unrequited love song.”

On tour, he will be singing all the songs from his first original album “Alone Together Again” with hits like “Only You and I Know You” and “World in Changes.”

Mason also plays his music tributes such as “All Along the Watch Tower,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” and “We Just Disagree.” When guitar-

40 AND STILL SURVIVING Survivor’s Party still about Locals

he Survivor’s Party is a long standing tradition in Key West, 40 years and going strong. Rather than celebrating the beginning of season, locals rather celebrate the end- the end of traffic and the end of crowds. Last Memorial Day, the heat ushered in tranquil days of summer and the Survivor’s Party was in full swing at La Te Da Restaurant. Raising money for the Sister Season Fund, the only local fund that provides for people in the service industry, the Survivor’s party isn’t just about getting through the season but getting life in a tourist town.

Ray Hennesy has organized the Survivor’s party food for 25 years.

ock Solomon’s Jazz Retrospectacular comes to a close this weekend with a culmination of crooner events for the musically inclined.

First up, the Jazz Noir Multimedia Concert will take place on Saturday, June 3 at 8 p.m. at The Studios of Key West. Noted as an out-of-the-box event looking at Key West history and culture through the lens of the Jazz Age. Solomon combines narrative, music and technology to weave a jazz musicians story of 1930s Key West, when rumrunners were rampant, the economy was bust, and a hurricane like no other nearly sealed the island’s fate. Tickets are $38 for general admission and $55 for

preferred seating with champagne.

Solomon studied music directly from his big band musician father, gaining a unique perspective and intimate understanding of the jazz genre. Now, Solomon has emerged as a young crooner with an old soul and unique authenticity in a timeless jazz tradition.

On Sunday, June 3, the season finale has quite the lineup at Bottle Cap on Simonton Street. Starting at 7 p.m. there will be a classic car show followed by a live swing band. At 8 p.m., “Birth of the Blues” will show for a drive-in movie in the street beside Bottle Cap while swing dance lessons happen inside the bar. At 9 p.m. there will be a runway costume contest and raffle. After the movie, swing dancing will continue with an after party dance contest and retro beats throughout the night. The event is free and for all ages until 11 p.m.

pstairs at Square Grouper’s My New Joint on Cudjoe Key, bartender Ray Torres serves up some of his favorite beers. With more than 140 beers in the lounge’s portfolio, Torres is in charge of creating and maintaining the ever-rotating selection. But, even with such a selection of beers to choose from, his favorite thing to make is “Hemingway’s Haze,” a traditional Key West daiquiri just like Ernest Hemingway used to drink.

With locally made Papa’s Pilar Rum, fresh squeezed limes, and simple syrup, Torres says it’s three simple ingredients just like Papa used to drink back in the day. “It’s one of our signature cocktails,” he said. “It’s the real Keys drink, not mojitos and rumrunners.”

His go-to tapas pick: roasted cauliflower. Made with a house curry sauce, he says it’s not to be missed. Another favorite are the “lollipop” chicken wings. Try the asian version because they are very good.

The Key West High School 1999 graduate says his favorite part of working at “the joint” is his coworkers because of their amazing work ethic, and when he isn’t slinging beers and signature cocktails, he can be found at Marlin’s games in Miami.

I am a member of the French Club and beach volleyball club. I am on the Key West High School swim team and wrestling team. This past season was my first season on both teams, but I think wrestling pretty much took over my life. All of these are important to me because they are all filled with good times and memories.

I believe Mr. Whaley’s class, calculus, has prepared me the most for life after high school, because we would use a lot of real life problems and scenarios. The way he teaches the class made me a better student and prepared me best for college.

he Take Stock in Children program has inspired hundreds of children to achieve a greatness they never thought possible through education.

Who better to demonstrate that idea than Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie of Ethiopia, speaking before the 2017 Take Stock in Children graduation?

Prince Ermias is the grandson of famed Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, who changed the face of his country as well as the world from the 1930s to 1970s. Emperor Haile Selassie was originally named Ras Tafari before becoming Emperor. He is generally considered the Messiah of the Rastafarian (hence the name) movement in Jamiaca. He is Bob Marley’s “Iron Lion Zion.” “[My grandfather] believed you cannot control your destiny without education,” said Prince Ermias. Despite Selassie’s controversial reign, his mission never changed believing education the building block to a better society. At the time, it was an enormous task to educate people from all sectors of Ethiopia from servants to the military. There was opposition against the idea because if the poor were educated, they may overthrow government. Which, ultimately happened.

“My Grandfather believed in the cause, even if it meant self destruction; it was better for the greater good,” said Prince Ermias, who still works for Ethiopian Scholarships.

But he also notes that his country loses those they educate to first world countries. He is an example of that trend, lives in Washington D.C. and serves as the Chairman of the Crown Council of Ethiopia in exile, the last surviving Imperial Ethiopian deliberative body. Although, his life has been devoted to cultural and humanitarian missions for his native country such as the Haile-Selassie

The Autism Society of the Keys is hosting a free workshop on Tuesday, June 6 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church, 2713 Flagler Ave. Workshops are designed to inform participants of resources available to autistic children and their families.

n August of 2015, the Basillica School’s cafeteria and gymnasium was demolished due to unsafe structural conditions. Last week, the school broke ground on the new school activity center. When finished, it will be a hub of school activity — with several classrooms, one of the county’s largest gymnasiums, and a full kitchen and dining area. In its completion, the new space will also provide other ongoing parish and community ministries a home.

“For example,” said Prinicipal Robert Wright, “the Knights of Columbus will use it to raise funds for the MARC House, the local Boy Scout troop and other charities it supports.”

The 14,000-plus square foot facility was designed by Villa & Associates and will be built by Toppino & Sons at a cost of $2.9 million.

On May 22, during a short groundbreaking ceremony, Principal Wright spoke to the students of The Basilica School as they filed past the site with personalized rocks to start the foundation of the new structure.

“The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” he said, comparing the building process to something all students could relate to, playing with Legos. “We have pieces that just never seem to fit… today, we are going to become part of the foundation, but let us not forget who is the Cornerstone.”

MURAL MAKERS Key West students research and create school mural

A six-panel mural created by the entire student body of May Sands Montessori was revealed in a special celebration this past Friday at the public charter school located on the corner of United and Leon streets. Supported by a grant from the Florida Keys Arts Council and led by the school’s arts enrichment instructor Bria Ansara, the mural project began with a field trip to Fort West Martello’s Garden Club, where each class selected a recognizable island plant to sketch and research. Over a period of 10 sessions with each class, the mural took shape, becoming “vibrant and colorful, dreamlike and realistic all at the same time,” says Ansara. KEY WEST THEATER SCHOOL Key West

The Key West Theater School for the Performing Arts will be holding a multidisciplinary theatrical summer camp from July 17–21. The camp will focus on teaching students acting, singing, and dancing as well as the vocabulary of the theater, in addition to how to collaborate, fail forward, and create their own art. Classes will be held daily from noon to 5 p.m. and are open to students from age 8 to 18. The students will be divided into age groups (8–12 and 13–18). He compared the amount of cement used in the Category 5-rated $7 million building to the weight of 6,000 manatees. The new location will be an attraction for scientists around the world, to not only research and rehabilitate coral, but also study ocean acidification and climate change.

UNITED WAY GIVES AWAY $185,000

nited Way of the Florida Keys will distribute a total of $185,000 in grants to local nonprofit agencies in 201718. Fifteen programs have been identified so far for funding through UWFK’s traditional funding process in one of three United Way focus areas: access to nutritious food for people in critical need; early childhood or after-school care with an educational or positive behavioral component; or safety net services, including information and referral or short-term emergency response.

UWFK is also releasing a request for proposals to organizations offering comprehensive after school and out of school time care in support of working families. This additional $30,000 investment in community support will help organizations serving children through all areas of the Keys.

The 2017-18 grant recipients funded through the traditional allocation process were selected based on a scores calculated from a rubric submitted by United Way board members and community volunteers who reviewed applications and visited agencies in each region of the Keys. Rubrics rate agencies based on organizational capacity, budget, strength of program outcomes, and use of leverage and volunteers.

Site visit volunteer Amy Heavilin, said of the experience, “These are great organizations applying for local funding from United Way and I would like to commend UWFK on their approach of evaluating the applicants in such a thorough manner. The questions and concerns raised by the volunteers are very informative. It is an absolute pleasure to meet our local non-profits and see the great work they do each year helping our community.”

FOLLIES ON SATURDAY After a highly successful revival, the Key West Follies moves this year to its original slot and name to open this year’s Pride week with a large variety of local talent in an old fashioned vaudeville type show. Performance time will be on for one night only on Saturday, June 3 at 8 p.m. at Key West Theater on Eaton Street.

Pride Follies is patterned after the old Ed Sullivan’s “Toast of the Town,” and stars Destiny Montgomery, Elle Taylor, Heather-May Victoria Potter, Joanie Sullivan, Jodyrae Campbell, Joe Tripp, Linda Cruz, Rick Dery, Terri White and more.

3 GUITARISTS ON SUNDAY Three virtuoso Florida Keys guitarists are to present concerts in three Keys locations through Sunday, June 4, intriguing audiences with performances in genres from classical to contemporary to Latin. Now in its second year, the Florida Keys Guitar Festival presents the three masters in a “guitar summit” format — acclaimed classical guitarist Mateo Jampol, contemporary guitarist David Feder and Latin guitarist Rolando Rojas.

With performances in Tavernier and Marathon, the concert moves to Key West on Sunday, June 4 at 8 p.m. at Key West Theater on Eaton Street. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at thekeywesttheater.com for the Key West performance. While advance purchase is recommended, tickets also will be available at the door.

In this book, Nick and Norm, who have radically different personalities, learn to appreciate and value each other’s gifts and quirks as they hunt down a grisly serial killer. THROUGH THE LENS OF A STORM CHASER

O

n the morning of August 29th of 2005, Hurricane Katrina plowed into the shores of Louisiana and Mississippi. The killer storm that ravaged the coastal areas would become one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes ever. The images and videos are etched in our memories; none more so, than the footage of a Holiday Inn systematically destroyed in Gulfport, Mississippi.

The footage would become the marquee footage of the storm’s devastation … and it was shot by Key Largo native and professional storm chaser, Mike Theiss.

The following year, his film earned him an Emmy nomination, and would go on to win awards from the National Press Photographers Association and Photo District News. You can view the footage, along with all of Theiss’ storm chasing videos, on his YouTube channel — Ultimate Chase.

You’ve been fascinated by hurricane for most of your life, do you remember your first hurricane?

Hurricane Floyd in 1987. The eye came over my house and from then on I was hooked. Anything I wrote about in school that was science-related was about hurricanes.

Aside from your first, which storms made the biggest impression as a kid?

Hurricane Andrew. The storm made a huge impact on me — I couldn’t believe how something could be so powerful. Afterwards I just had to learn more about it.

When did you begin your career as a photographer for National Geographic?

In 2003, it was the perfect combination of my passion for photography and extreme weather.

How many tropical cyclones have you documented over your career?

I’ve documented the landfall of more than 40 tropical cyclones, which is pretty extensive in the storm chasing world.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

Aside from tropical cyclones, you also take time ever year to chase down tornados in the Midwest. Ever have any close calls?

Yes. The famous El Reno Tornado in 2013 was a real wake up call. The Tornado went for 1 mile wide to 2.5 miles wide in seconds and accelerated its forward advancement. Mix that in with bumper-to-bumper traffic blocking all the escape routes and I found myself in a real pickle.

You have the distinct honor of having captured the fastest wind gusts on video, what was that like?

In 2004, I captured footage of 155 mph wind gusts shredding a Charlotte Harbor gas station during Hurricane Charley from inside my car. It’s some of my most dramatic footage.

Your footage of Hurricane Katrina from a beachside hotel in Gulfport, Mississippi has become synonymous with its deadly destruction. How did you decide on the location?

I first documented the storm in Ft. Lauderdale where it made landfall. I followed the storm up the coast all the way to Gulfport. When I first spoke to the manager of the hotel I was staying at, he said that engineers had designed the hotel in the aftermath of Hurricane Camille. They built it with breakaway walls and pilings, so that it would give easily and relieve any pressure from rushing water.

What do you remember the most from the entire ordeal?

It was so loud, it was unbelievable.

People were terrified and crying, they thought the entire building was going to collapse. I remember being terrified but thinking that I had put myself there — so I might as well document it.

The footage shows that when the storm surge rose, you retreated back into the stairwell and higher floors. How high did the water rise?

At its highest, about 28 feet, and that’s not including the waves on top of the surge. It was then that I understood how serious the situation was and began looking for a roof access to get out. And then all of water that had come in receded within an hour. It was like someone pulled the drain and the water went away.

What was the scene like after the storm?

We went out and started walking around and everything was totally destroyed. It was 99 percent destroyed, and the only reason I don’t say completely, is because the one building left standing was the one we had stayed in. The only thing left from the Waffle House I had just eaten at the day before was a couple chairs bolted to the ground. That was it.

Because of the damage to the roads in and out of Gulfport, you were stuck in the area for a few days after the storm.

What were those days like?

For those days I was stuck there, we would walk around and you could smell the death in the air.

It’s something I’ll never forget.

I feel lucky that I survived, and after that I realized that maybe I don’t need to push it to the end.

But I did, however, want to show and share with people how bad hurricanes are, and that it’s not a game being out there.

What’s next on your storm chasing bucket list?

To document a Category 5 and embed the H.E.R.V. (Hurricane Eyewall Research Vehicle) inside to record the wind speeds and barometric pressure. I would never wish for such a powerful storm to occur, but if it does occur, I want to be there to document it.

What advice do you have for locals for this year’s Hurricane Season?

My advice this Hurricane Season would be to stay stocked up on the usual necessities, make sure your batteries are not expired.

If you don’t have an emergency kit, I’d say get one and if you already have one, freshen it up.

In the Keys we could be trapped for weeks before bridges are repaired. I highly evacuation if a bad one is coming …

unners, fitness walkers and paddleboard enthusiasts can test their skills and celebrate Ernest Hemingway’s sporting lifestyle Saturday, July 22. The Hemingway 5K Sunset Run/ Walk is the longest on-going race in Key West (25 years), and a few years ago, the paddleboard element was added.

The athletic challenges are part of Hemingway Days, a six-day commemoration of the life and work of the author who lived and wrote in Key West for most of the 1930s.

The Lazy Dog Paddleboard Race will kick off at 6 p.m. at the island city’s Southernmost Beach, 1405 Duval St. on the Atlantic Ocean. Competitors are tasked with paddling a 3-mile ocean course before finishing back at the beach.

The popular 5K run/walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, oceanfront at Whitehead and South streets. Participants race through picturesque Old Town Key West, past landmarks including the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, Green Parrot Bar, the Key West Lighthouse, and Custom House as they complete the fast, flat 3.1-mile course.

A registration booth will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. on race day on the beach outside of the Southernmost Beach Café. Afterwards, a great postrace awards party is scheduled outside in the same area and includes free food, libations, and raffles.
