Whether it be college life, joining the workforce, or undertaking a new trade — it’s time to sink or swim. In the first years of independence, changes sometimes come subtly, while other times they jolt the conscious. As the graduating seniors of Coral Shores High School prepare to embark on new journeys, the advice they receive can carry them far. So the Weekly asked incoming seniors and faculty at Coral Shores …

What advice do you have for graduating seniors?

“I would tell seniors that as freshman keep up your grades, it’s difficult to recover from bad grades. And learn to budget your money. You probably won’t have much of it, so you’ll need to learn how to make it last,” said Administrative Assistant Catherine Lozano.

“Don’t lose sight of your goals and don’t take drugs from strangers,” said Emma Marsden.

School Resource Officer Larry O’Neill said, “Pursue what you love with all your heart and conduct yourselves in a way that would make your parents proud.”

Incoming senior, Kendra Powers, said “Do what makes you happy and don’t forget your friends at home.”

School Board alters start times for Lower Keys area schools GABRIEL SANCHEZ

n May 23, the Monroe County School District met to discuss a number of topics during its scheduled workshop and School Board meeting.

The final item on the workshop’s agenda addressed the changing of school start times throughout the District.

Monroe County Superintendent Mark Porter had previously recommended no changes to start times for elementary and middle/high schools located in the Upper and Middle Keys. There was, however, discussion of altering times for Lower Keys area schools.

After minor changes were made to the initial proposal, the board approved the consolidation of previously staggered start times for K-8 students at Horace O’Bryant School.

The board also approved a 15

minute earlier start time for Poinciana Elementary School to address issues over student drop-off and dismissals.

The board voted 3-1 in favor, with Board Member Bobby Highsmith dissenting. (Board Member Andy Griffith was absent.)

Before the vote, Highsmith expressed disappointment, explaining that a start time of 7:30 a.m. is too early for his district’s high schoolers. He explained that the issue of start times has had more public input than any other he’s discussed in his time on the board. He said keeping the early start was a disservice to Keys students. In arguing for later start times, Highsmith cited the American Pediatric Society’s recommendation of 8:30 a.m.

Porter said the main obstacle to changing the beginning of school day is lack of school bus drivers. Porter said that due to the limitations of driver availability in the labor force, he was “… not confident at this time that we can meet that expectation.”

While the board approved the Superintendent’s recommendations to adopt minor changes, there was a shared interest in obtaining additional drivers so future discussions would not stall due to similar conservations regarding transportation.

BRIEFLY Upper Keys schedules Memorial Day events On Monday, May 29, Monroe County Veterans Affairs and Tavernier Elks Lodge 1872 will pay tribute to America’s fallen heroes. A patriotic convoy of vehicles will leave Coral Shores High School at 10 a.m. and proceed to Murray Nelson Government Center. The convoy will include Marathon’s Monroe County Marauders, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary color guard, Key Largo Fire Department, and local car show participants. Once the convoy reaches the government center, hot dogs and refreshments will be provided for all. Entertainment ranges from the Key Largo School music band to a flyover from Tavernier’s Grey Sheep Squadron.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, the Long Walk Home will host its second annual fishing tournament fundraiser from Tom’s Harbor Cut Fishing Bridge.

The Day kicks off with ‘lines out’ at 9 a.m., with fishing lasting until sunset. Registration into the fishing tournament is $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

The two-day tournament will also feature fishing seminars both days from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Local guides will lead the discussion, covering topics including fly fishing, flats fishing, bridge fishing, shark identification and behavior, and kayak fishing.

Trolley Tours happen this Saturday Matecumbe Historical Trust presents “29 Points of Interest” Historical Trolley Tours of Islamorada on Saturday, May 20 starting at 10 a.m. Additional tours will be added based on demand. Pickup is at Islamorada Moose Lodge. Tours last one hour; reservations are recommended. Tickets, merchandise and memorabilia may be purchased onsite. Obituary for William L. Kirchner William L. Kirchner, age 83 of Tavernier, FL formerly of Euclid and Kirtland, OH, passed away April 15, 2017 at his residence. He was born July 30, 1933 in Cleveland.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, OH, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, ROTC and served as a volunteer fireman. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Kirchner owned and operated Cleveland Chemical Pest Control, which has been in his family for over 80 years.

Mr. Kirchner was a member of the Euclid Jaycees and was awarded the distinction of JCI Senatorship #9676. Serving as an active member and a past president of the Ohio Pest Control Association, he was also awarded the distinction of Lifetime Membership.

He was also a board member of the Friends of the Islamorada Area State Parks.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, and watching sunsets at his home in the Keys and at his family cottage on Lake Erie.

Survivors include his children William P. Kirchner, Barbara A. (Edward) Nye, Kathleen “Katie” (David) Grgetic and Timothy J. Kirchner; grandchildren Andrew (Laura) Nye, Meghan, Benjamin and James “Jimmy” Nye, Robert and Emily Grgetic; great grandson Jackson and sister Mary Maltry. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor “Honey” Kirchner; parents William and Lucille Kirchner and sisters Jean Schroeder and Margaret Middleton.

A memorial mass will be held at San Pedro Catholic Church, 89500 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, FL. on May 27 at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Florida Keys, 92001 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, FL 33070 or to the Friends of the Islamorada Area State Parks, P.O. Box 236, Islamorada, FL 33036.

RAISE THE ROAD M onroe County Mayor George Neugent has been hosting several meetings over the past few weeks about a variety of transportation issues involving the Overseas Highway – the County’s “Main Street” also known as U.S. 1. On Friday morning, the discussion was about one of the highway’s lowest-lying sections – a stretch along Sea Oates Beach at Mile Marker 75 in Islamorada.

Also participating in the conference call were Florida Department of Transportation District 6 Secretary Jim Wolfe and representatives from the Village of Islamorada.

Due to its low elevation and proximity just yards from the Atlantic Ocean, this stretch of road is prone to flooding. It also is part of the main hurricane evacuation route out of the Florida Keys for the majority of the island chain’s population. Public safety is put at risk if the roadway is blocked

or hazardous to drive.

Due to these reasons, the County and the Village of Islamorada have identified this stretch as a priority for flooding mitigation. Discussions have included elevation of the road and mitigation efforts such as a proper natural buffer zone and beach nourishment.

“We’re really in the posture of trying to accelerate DOT’s interest in the stretch of the road for public safety,” Monroe County Mayor Pro Tem David Rice said. “It is the most easily identifiable risk to traffic on U.S. 1 in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm. We know this because that stretch has been blocked in previous storms. Before there is further erosion, we’d like to take proactive steps rather than deal with an emergency recovery.”

Future meetings are planned to discuss solutions.

BRIEFLY Fiscal budget discussed at meeting The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has begun holding public meetings and hearings regarding the Fiscal Year 2018 budget.

The remaining public budget schedule includes: July 25 at 10 a.m. at Harvey Government Center in Key West. This special meeting is for discussion of the budget and capital improvement plan and the announcement of the proposed millage rate.

Sept. 5 at 5:05 p.m. at Murray Nelson Government Center, Key Largo. The first public hearing and adoption of the tentative budget and millage rate.

Sept. 7 at 5:05 p.m. at Marathon Government Center. A special budget meeting, which is not required but done as a public service.

O

riginally born in Cuba, Ileana Galan’s family made the voyage to South Florida in 1969.

Miami was home for most of her life, until Galan made the move to the Keys about six years ago. She had visited first as a teenager, then as a parent camping at the KOA campgrounds along the islands.

But after retiring from 30 years of working for AT&T, she had a little time on her hands.

“I found myself sitting around too much. So I dug around and found an old camera I had bought about 15 years ago and started taking pictures,” said Galan. “I really started getting into it once I moved into the Keys because of how beautiful it is here. I use to wake up at 6:30 to catch the sunrise and take pictures. Photography relaxes me, and it’s something I wish I would have started earlier on.”

Her weapon of choice is the nifty Nikon D3100, equipped with her favorite 50 - 500 mm lens.

“That’s what I use most of the time.

It’s what allows me to get good pictures of birds.”

Galan’s photography routine consisted of rising before sunrise and venturing out to find birds, or visit local historic sites like the bridges near Bahia Honda State Park.

As her collection grew, so did the demand for prints. So she decided to purchase her own printer. Her collection of matted prints already exceeds 350 prints and range from $15 to $175. Ileana Galan Photography also partners with a local custom framing service.

Galan has exhibited her photography at six Upper Keys events within the last year.

“I have had people buying my work lately, and I’m really happy with how it’s been received,” she said.

rue to the Irish theme of Dillon’s Pub & Grill, bartender Tara Zimmerman recommends having a shot of Jameson straight during your next visit.

“If you really insisted on diluting it down, maybe add a splash of ginger. Otherwise leave it alone,” said Zimmerman. “It’s too tasty, there’s no sense of wasting good whiskey.”

Zimmerman’s favorite brand is Jameson. For the Irish in us all, try pairing Jameson with Dillon’s bangers and mash, which are served typically on Thursdays.

Zimmerman has been in the Keys for about 10 years, after migrating down from Pennsylvania. She’s a die-hard Philly sports fan, especially of the Eagles.

“This is our year,” Zimmerman said. “It’ll be this year. If you say it enough, you’ll believe it eventually.”

In the Keys, her hobbies include gardening, drinking Jameson with her buddies at Dillon’s Pub and Grill, and pretending to be an artist. Her front yard consists of more than 40 different type of flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

“We have a little bit of everything in the garden — ghost peppers, tomatoes, lemons, herbs, succulents, ornamentals, you name it,” she said.

Dillon’s Pub & Grill is located at MM 91 in Tavernier in the same plaza as Winn-Dixie.

WEEKLY INTERVIEW You speak four languages — English, Dutch, German, and Spanish. Which is the most difficult to learn?

Spanish, because it’s such a rich language, there are so many different Spanish dialects and so many words to describe something. Spanish is much more passionate, so to be able to speak it properly you have you have to keep learning.

What’s one thing about the Dutch people or culture that American’s should know?

I’d say we like to wine and dine.

Dutch families can easily sit at the table for four hours and enjoy conversation. Obviously we’re known for our tulips and wooden shoes, even though Tulips are from Turkey.

The Dutch are also known for our engineering — a big percentage of the country is under sea level and we manage it with windmills and dikes.

ey Largo’s Ilja Chapman grew up in the Netherlands not far from Amsterdam. But just because she was born there, didn’t mean she was staying.

After graduating college, Chapman took her first adventure to the South American country of Ecuador. She lived deep in the Amazon jungle with native tribes whom had only just recently (1970s) made contact with the civilized world. “I left the Netherlands in 1993. I told my mom I was going to travel for a year — and never returned,” she said.

She’s since lived in Spain, the United Kingdom, Saint Lucia, Grand Cayman, worked aboard cruise ships, and has been to all seven continents, including Antarctica.

After working for some time in hotel management, she did what any sensible person with an insatiable appetite for travel does — she made it her profession. Since 2013, she’s has called Key Largo home, and as a “land and cruise specialist” for Cruise Planners, she helps others realize their dream vacations. Chapman is also anticipating a busy year of helping the ladies of the Upper Keys Business and Professional Woman realize their professional dreams as the newly elected president.

What’s the most rewarding part of booking someone else’s vacation?

Its helping them realize their dream trip — putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, and adding all the small ideas and details that can make it truly special for them.

Where’s the most unique destination you’ve booked?

The Svalbard islands, which is all the way north of Norway by the artic. If you want to see polar bears that’s where you go.

How many countries have you visited?

I’m not sure, I had the big world map where you put the pins in it at one point. All of Europe, that’s for sure. Probably more than 50 or 60 countries. I was fortunate that I traveled a lot while working on a ship.

Where is one new place you want to visit?

Definitely South Africa. I’ve been to North Africa but I want to go to South Africa and go on a safari, that’s definitely on my list.

How often do you travel?

Probably at least six times a year, but I’d like to do more. Obviously you have to have flexibility in your schedule, but big trips like those overseas are once a year.

Anything crazy happen in the jungle of the Amazon?

It’s not unusual to see tarantulas, they lived in the ceiling of my cabana. I was a little shocked by that. I had a wild pig that the Indians gave to me as pet. I never met any anacondas, but I was also fortunate enough to be able to experience the Pink River dolphin. I was on a raft and they just came by us. They were hunted for a long time because their eyes were believed to be an aphrodisiac for sexual potency.

If you could wake up tomorrow with any super power, what would it be?

It would definitely be to be able to beam myself anywhere in the world. That way I could start my day having breakfast overlooking the Alps, then lunch in Sydney, and finally a romantic dinner in Rome.

One piece of would you give to graduating seniors from Coral Shores High School?

Broaden your horizons. Travel and don’t be afraid. People are the same all over the world. Learn a language, if you know a language it’s so much more fun and educational when you are able to speak with the locals.

M

onroe County is one step closer to acquiring the 8-acre parcel known as Gulf Seafood on Stock Island. At its most recent meeting, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners approved a broad-stroke management plan, one of the requirements of the state’s Stan Mayfield Working Waterfront grant. Monroe County will pay in about $5 million, and the state grant will cover $2 million.

The need to preserve working waterfront, both fishermen and government agree, is dire.

“That’s the most dramatic visual that we have,” said Commissioner Danny Kolhage, pointing to a map with four red circles denoting former commercial working waterfront that have been developed into high-end marinas, and three yellow circles of the remaining commercial marinas on Stock Island. “That’s what’s happening to commercial fishing properties right now.”

Gulf Seafood sits on 8 acres on the southeast end of Stock Island. It currently has space for about two dozen boats, trap storage and a relatively new 2,400 square foot building that could be used as a fish house. The property owners have been struggling to make ends meet, and according to

county staff, recently left town. It is operational, but also needs significant repairs to the seawall, security and the purchase and installation of a travel lift — at a cost of about $2 million.

Currently, it’s in a state of receivership until the government can complete the purchase, and being operated by a group of commercial fishermen who are operating as a nonprofit to “keep the lights on.”

According to a report commissioned by the County, Monroe County landed 17.3 million pounds of seafood valued at $71.2 million in 2015. About 51 percent of that comes through Stock Island and Key West. The report estimated the value of the landings at Gulf Seafood at approximately $4.8 million during 2013.

While the need for a commercial waterfront is clear, the method of operation is not. The management plan presented to the commission for approval follows a “cooperative” model.

The boats would pay annual dockage and trap storage fees (estimated at $14,500 per boat). If the property had an operational fish house, which there is capacity for, the fishermen could sell to the fish house, or sell their catch on the open market. In the case of the open market, this means selling directly to Miami fish houses that send refrigerated trucks from the mainland. The county estimates that the fishermen’s rent would cover, at the bare minimum, the $300,000 cost for administering the property which it intends to outsource. The county would negotiate a percentage of the management’s profits, and use the money to improve the parcel.

While one such cooperative recently formed on Stock Island called

Safe Harbor, it is not the prevailing business model. There are two fish houses on Stock Island — Fish Busterz and the Stock Island Lobster Company.

The fish house business model offers free dockage to its boats, and often emergency financial assistance. Fishermen who dock at the fish house agree to a price set by the fish house.

Mimi Stafford, speaking on behalf of the fishermen who have banded together to keep Gulf Seafood operational until the county can buy it, said that’s not the only business model.

“There’s a cooperative in northern Massachusetts that’s been in operation for 30 years,” Stafford said, adding that fishing cooperatives are springing up all over Florida with the help of the Mayfield grants. “And the fish house business model doesn’t work for everyone. Those fishermen who are business savvy, and willing to take the risk and receive a larger reward are right for the cooperative model. In fact, I believe it is progressive; it is the future.”

Lisa Tennyson is the Monroe County Director of Legislative Affairs and Grants Acquisition. She has been working on the purchase of Gulf Seafood for 10 years, since the Marine Port Advisory Committee recommended its preservation in 2006. She said the broad-stroke management plan presented to the BOCC has many details yet to be determined. She said the Request For Proposal process, where the county will seek applicants to manage the property, is an avenue to explore ideas.

“The RFP can invite any number of scenarios and solicit ideas, keeping it wide open,” Tennyson said. “We may get proposals for traditional fish houses, or we can get interesting ideas

and we can pull those. We’ll see what we get.”

Peter Bacle, who owns the Stock Island Lobster Company, told the BOCC he does not support the management plan as presented.

“This plan has zero percent chance of being successful,” Bacle said. “If you start with 25 boats that can provide the revenue to cover the expense of the property, only about half a dozen boats can pay this rent on a consistent basis. And that’s not counting hurricanes, or blown engines, or the China market.

“What happens to me when I have to compete with a fish house that is subsidized by my own tax dollars? I’ve spent the last 40 years dealing with commercial fishing regulations. The final chapter is the government coming in and physically taking it over. There’s no winner in this except for a handful of fishermen that win the lottery without putting in any money.”

And that’s the other rub — what type of applicants would be eligible?

Would they be local? Would they be top-producers? And how can young commercial fishermen expect to compete if they cannot afford to expand their business — buying more trap tags or additional boats — without the security of long-term waterfront space?

“We haven’t gotten to that level of detail yet,” said Tennyson. “Those are very strong, very serious concerns.”

Tennyson said she plans to research eligibility criteria at similar operations and even ask for direction on RFP proposals from potential facility managers.

Kohlage said it is unknowable who will have the advantage — a cooperative fisherman or a fish house fisherman.

“We can’t require a fish house to reveal their numbers, so I just don’t know. The main focus is to preserve this as working waterfront,” said Kolhage. “If we don’t do that it will be upscale development of some kind.

We know how important fisheries are to the state of Florida.”

Tennyson said the business model is secondary to the property itself.

“The commercial fish house is not the primary purpose of the grant. The primary purpose of the grant is to secure the working waterfront,” she said.

Kolhage said he’s uneasy about the county entering into a private sector endeavor.

“This is not something that I like to do. This is by necessity,” Kohlage said.

“That’s why the state has this grant program which is designated specifically for this purpose. We don’t want to put any existing business out of business, because that would be contrary to the whole idea which is to preserve them.”

n February, City Hall Café celebrated 20 years of serving locals, but things are changing at the café. The small eatery has matured and is embracing a new identity that is closer to that of a café and grill, and less of a deli, says café co-founder John Bedell.

Bedell originally founded the City Hall Café alongside Henry Danzig.

“When we started, it was tiny. We would take turns either waiting tables or cooking. The first month open we both worked 30 days consecutively,” said Bedell. “It was such a feeling of accomplishment.”

City Hall Café’s unique choice of name has always caused a stir, Bedell said. The lunch menu is loaded with clever word play — appetizers listed under “Planning Department,” the “SUBdivision” sandwich section, and the chef’s choice — otherwise known as “Mayor’s Vote.”

Still, patrons gravitate toward the specials on the blackboard.

“Our signature dish that really started everything was the ‘Kickin Chicken,’ which consist of blackened chicken served over penne pasta and with Alfredo sauce. It’s the perfect blend of heat and creamy,” said Bedell.

City Hall Cafe keeps its taste robust by sourcing fresh fish and purchasing locally grown produce. All of the café’s meat cuts are USDA choice.

“The steaks are some of the more reasonably priced steaks in the area, and come served with choice of salad or soup, starch of the day, and fresh veggies. All dinner entrees are served with fresh baked bread and olive oil plate,” said Bedell.

An ideal three course meal at City Hall Café, however, would consist of the following: For starters, the shrimp scampi appetizer, which is prepared in garlic

butter and comes served over sautéed spinach and accompanied by rustica bread. For the main course — Dolphin Pomodoro with Italian bread crumbs, topped with sautéed tomatoes, basil, garlic, white wine and drizzled with key lime butter. Leave room for desert.

“Our Key Lime pie recipe is the original Key Lime pie recipe. It originated from local historic documents that are now stored at Islamorada library archives,” Bedell said. The café also has a large bottle beer and wine section.

City Hall Café is located at 88511 Overseas Highway in Tavernier and delivers to locations between Snake Creek Bridge and Tavernier Creek Bridge. Hours are between 10:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; closed Sundays.

rom May 18–21, Key Largo’s Original Music Festival returned to the shores of the Florida Bay for four days of melodies by local and national talent. The Key Largo Merchant’s Association sponsored event featured more than 30 acts throughout the weekend, some of which made the long trip down from Nashville. For the first three days, Festival-goers were able to bounce between stages located at Sundowners, Señor Frijoles, and Cactus Jack’s. “I was always so envious of the kids who have never had to work a day in their lives,” said Marissa Darrow. “I wanted the nice trucks, the newest iPhones, and the nicest clothing. So I got a job.

I started working in the service industry as soon as I turned 14.

I was a hostess at The Hungry Tarpon at Robbie’s Marina. I was on the schedule for weekends working 9-10 hour shifts.”

Before her senior year, Darrow had saved more than $3,000, and had her heart set on a big red GMC Sierra. After negotiating down the original offer — she drove off into the sunset.

“Working in the service industry I’ve improved on my social skills, I’ve learned how to budget money and time, work under pressure, and to always have a smile on your face. I’ve learned the value of hard work and money and have applied it to many of my achievements,” she said.

Like the many proud fishermen before him, Given’s dream of fishing glory will take him to all sorts of waters.

“The day after I graduate I fly to the Bahamas to work on a private boat named the Que Mas. From there we take the boat to Bermuda to fish in the Triple Crown billfish tournament series.

From there I go to Louisiana, and then back to the Bahamas, to work on a different private boat,” he said.

KATIE WHITE Super Volunteer

• Hours Clocked: 150 community service hours from various events.

Katie White’s favorite events she’s volunteered at were the mangrove cleanups she helped organize behind the Coral Shores High School’s campus and at Snake Creek Marina. She didn’t work alone. She organized approximately 75 students to collect garbage and debris. Through her efforts and leadership, White was able to have all 75 students be credited with 10 hours of community service each. The results from the clean-up were quite impressive and exceeded expectation.

“At these events we organized and collected over two thousand pounds of recyclable and nonrecyclable trash. I love organizing these events and getting our student body involved,” she said.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN

Bobby Oshaben said he wouldn’t be able to grow as an artist without the encouragement and support of his mother, as well as his art teacher, Carmen Kelley. Oshaben says Mrs. Kelley has helped prepare him for art school.

“My art is inspired by my love of the outdoors, I have always been connected to the natural world and my art gives me an outlet to express this passion. One of the most important steps in my process is finding inspiration for the painting — I want to create a scene that inspires emotion. If the inspiration excites me, then usually the painting will too,” he said.

However, Oshaben’s masterpieces are often inspired by scenery very different than a Florida Keys’ sunset.

“My favorite scenes to paint are mountains with colorful light reflecting off the slopes, and deep forests.

I’m inspired by the majestic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.”

JAVIER EXPOSITO Entrepreneur

Javier Exposito started his own business, JE Film Production, when he was 15. Since the beginnings in his freshman year, Exposito has amassed a strong following on Instagram and YouTube.

Though he’s self-taught in every aspect of video production — from initial filming to editing — Exposito credits those around him for his growing success.

“Being a young entrepreneur in a small town, I’ve had a great amount of community support. I thankfully have so many people that are behind me, supporting what I do, and encouraging me to go further in life with it,” said Exposito.

One of his most recognizable videos is the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office “Running Man Challenge” video.

“I truly enjoy showing the world off in a different way other than photos! There’s so much more you can experience through a video,” said Exposito, who also makes videos for businesses and families.

In the fall, Exposito plans on moving to California to purse a future in film. He will be attending Los Angeles film school. “I’ll will learn more about film, and about all the professional processes that go into big time film making,” he said.

The Phantom was challenging, but one of Cox’s favorite memories was playing the role of talk show host for three of his friends in the production of “A Christmas Carol.”

Cox plans on attending college after taking a gap year to study music-theater.

“I might minor in genetics or music,” said Cox of his future.

“Hopefully I can pursue theater as a career and be happy with my choice.”

• Sports: Varsity Lacrosse, Varsity Soccer, Varsity Volley Ball, and Cross Country In the spring of her freshman year, Upchurch began her lacrosse career on junior varsity, but was moved up to varsity and became the only starting freshman that year. She would go on to receive Rookie of the Year. In her junior and senior year, Upchurch was named Most Valuable Player, Monroe County Player of the Year, and was on the first district team.

During both years, Coral Shores were district champions. She and her teammates helped coaches Cindy Hall and Mark Hall earn his 100th win.

“I think I am most proud of being a back to back MVP recipient for girls’ lacrosse or being a captain for every team I was a part of senior year. It showed that all my hard work paid off and others acknowledged my leadership skills. I was so happy to lead my team and be a good role model,” she said.

“Being a student athlete isn’t easy. Especially when you have no off season,” said Upchruch, who also sports 4.18 GPA. Upchurch plans on continuing lacrosse at Florida State University, where she will be majoring in athletic training, with an eye on grad school and becoming a physical therapist.

Marco Gonzales’ blueprint for a bright future isn’t the first schematics the young gear-head has seen. Appropriately, he’s planned his goals around mastering the nuts and bolts of marine mechanics.

“I plan to attend Manatee Tech and get my certifications for Yamaha marine and Mercury marine,” he said. “After college, I hope I can open a mobile business and work on boats in the Keys. While working, I would like to buy and work on a race boat like a Skater to have fun with on the water.”

Much of Gonzales’ interest in marine mechanics is the result of four years of the Marine Servicing class offered at Coral Shores High School. Gonzales said worked on all types of engines, but he’s most intrigued by mechanical engineering. Gonzales says he enjoys the challenge of diagnosing and fixing problems.
