n two weeks, Monroe County School District officials will sit down to meet with the designers of Marathon High School’s new athletic field. There’s room for a full-size athletic track or a community pool, but not both, on the adjacent property formerly known as Marathon Manor.

“If we build a full-size track, one where they can host tournaments, there’s certainly not room for a pool,” said Pat Lefere, executive director of operations and planning for the Monroe County School District.

(To be clear, the Monroe County School District has never said it would build a pool. However, there has been much public discussion in Marathon about building a community pool on the Marathon Manor site owned by the school district.)

On Tuesday, June 6, school officials will meet with the design team from Rowe Architects of Tampa. Most likely, they will walk the site and come back with multiple options — small, medium, and large — for proposed uses for the property. At the minimum, it could be used to provide more parking.

However, the discussion also extends to either a full-size track, a smaller practice track, and also workforce housing.

“This all started a couple of years ago when we realized we needed to raise the existing athletic fields at Marathon High School due to flooding,” Lefere said. “It was time to make improvements and reconfigure — more parking, raised fields, more fields.”

Then, in 2017, Marathon High School surprised the county by becoming district track and field champions — without a track. Both Coral Shores High School and Key West High School have full tracks, which are sometimes available for the use of the general public. Coral Shores High School swims at Founders Park in Islamorada, and Key West High school swims at the Florida Keys Community College pool. Marathon has no public pools, and so the high school swim team travels to Islamorada.

Lefere said a full-size regulation track would take up most of the Marathon Manor property, whose north and east sides are both wetlands.

“We have two or three options. The most conservative would be to decrease the size of the track and have fewer new parking spaces,” Lefere said. “If we used all, or almost all, of the property that would mean a full-size regulation track, practice field space and more parking. We will probably ask for something in between.”

Rowe Architects is being paid $250,000 to come up with the design.

Lefere said a public workshop about the Marathon High School athletic field, as well as the $22 million refurbishment of Stanley Switlik Elementary, will be scheduled for later this summer.

Prevent sewer backups

T

he majority of sewer back-ups into businesses and homes are caused from improper disposal of waste into toilets and drains.

The following items should NEVER be discarded into toilets or drains: fats, oils or grease from cooking, solid food particles, diapers, baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, and paper towels. These items do not break down in the sewer pipes and will cause backups into homes. The flushing of these items will create serious maintenance and health issues for the business and homeowner and also for the public wastewater collection and treatment systems.

When fats, oils or grease are poured down a sink, these products solidify once they have cooled down in the sewer pipes and will cause a blockage. Running hot water in the sink will not solve or remove the problem. This build-up will restrict flow and accumulate in the pipes, where in combination with other non-degradable materials will cause the blockage to increase and sewerage to back up into a business or home.

Through Ordinance 2011-14, the City of Marathon has established a grease trap program for restaurants and other grease producing businesses (not residences). It consists of regularly scheduled grease trap inspections which are performed by utility department personnel to help customers stay back-up free. The City will call ahead to schedule an inspection to make it as convenient as possible.

HILDE IRELAND Hildegard “Hilde” F. Ireland passed away on May 2, 2017 peacefully at her waterfront home in Key Colony Beach, Florida. Hilde lived a full life which was only 10 days shy of her 84th birthday. She was an accomplished pianist and an avid singer. She was very active in the American German Community.

Hilde recently celebrated her 37th wedding anniversary to her beloved, Harold Ireland. Hilde was a believer in God and was baptized a child of God. Her mother Hilde Falkenstein and father Karl Falkenstein as well as her son Erich M. Gruetzmann, Sr. precede her in death.

Survivors include her husband Harold Ireland, son Karl Gruetzmann and his wife Cathy Gruetzmann of Wildwood Crest, New Jersey; daughter in-law Angela Gruetzmann of Marathon, Florida. There are three grandchildren, Erich “Rickey” Gruetzmann, Alaina and Katelyn Boyden.

Talkin’ to the Big Head

KW: Most everyone, whether they realize it or not, knows your music. For the causal fan, how would you describe your sound?

TM: I would say we are a roots oriented rock ‘n’ roll band. As songwriters, we’ve had a lengthy career of original songs, but our style is all over the place.

he true testament to any great band is to evolve and somehow resonate beyond musical genres and singular fan bases. For Big Head Todd and The Monsters (BHTM), who play two shows this Saturday and Sunday at the Key West Theater, the band can certainly hold their own claim to being one of the rare, enduring bands spanning several generations of music.

Although the Colorado-based band formed in the mid ’80s, many casual fans still know BHTM for a flurry of top 15 songs in the early ’90s, such as “Bittersweet” and “Broken Hearted Savior,” which still have mass radio appeal today. However, much like their better-known hits, BHTM continue to produce original songs that reverberate amongst a wide array of fans.

In early June, BHTM will play at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater before more than 8,500 fans (a venue they’ve sold out dozens of times over their career). But this weekend, Key West music lovers will have a rare opportunity to hear BHTM in the intimate, personal setting of the Key West Theater. On the eve of the band’s dual shows in the Southernmost City, the Key West Weekly caught up with legendary lead singer Todd Park Mohr to discuss the upcoming shows and more:

Keys Weekly: Have you been to Key West before?

Todd Park Mohr: I’ve never been, but I’ve always wanted to go. It’s always been one of my bucket list items and I’m looking forward to it.

KW: You guys have played Red Rocks over 20 times. What’s it like to go from such a large venue such as that to something much more personable like a Key West Theater?

TM: It really doesn’t change [the approach]. The smallest gigs you might have could end up being your most significant. You just never know who’s out there and what’s going to happen.

KW: You have one of the most unique voices in the business. What comparisons has it drawn?

TM: I could tell you who I wish I could be compared to, like my songwriting heroes. Bob Dylan is at the top. Springsteen. I love Johnny Cash, Hendrix, Muddy Waters. But I don’t know that I would ever be compared to any of those people, but that’s where a lot of my influences came from.

KW: Cliché question. Are you as smart as they say you are and is that where your name Big Head Todd came from?

TM: [laughing] No … people say I’m smart and that’s silly. We were in college and we needed a name for a gig at a party. I think I thought of the name Big Head Todd and a Side of Beef. There’s a blues jazz artist by the name of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and I think that’s sort of where the origins come from.

KW: For the two Key West shows, should fans expect similar sets or a variety between the two nights?

TM: No, we’ll mix it up. Yeah, we’re hoping we’ll get some two timers and have some fun.

KW: What’s the secret to keeping a successful band together for as long as you have?

TM: In a band you have to make harmony — that’s the thing about music I guess.

KW: Do you approach songwriting now, the same way you did 25 years ago?

TM: I’ve gone through phases where I haven’t been as interested, or on the mark, as a writer, but obviously when we started out I had a lot of success as a songwriter and I am still extremely motivated as a writer. I think it’s an incredible opportunity to have something to say and to create music for a living.

KW: You have three hours to kill on the road. What’s your pleasure?

TM: I like to read or play silly video games on the iPad; but if I can practice guitar that would be my preferred thing to do anywhere.

KW: Are you working on anything new now?

TM: We just completed a new album and I think it will be released in the fall. We are going to be playing four to six of those songs at our Key West shows.

M

onroe County is one step closer to acquiring the 8-acre parcel known as Gulf Seafood on Stock Island. At its most recent meeting, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners approved a broad-stroke management plan, one of the requirements of the state’s Stan Mayfield Working Waterfront grant. Monroe County will pay in about $5 million, and the state grant will cover $2 million.

The need to preserve working waterfront, both fishermen and government agree, is dire.

“That’s the most dramatic visual that we have,” said Commissioner Danny Kolhage, pointing to a map with four red circles denoting former commercial working waterfront that have been developed into high-end marinas, and three yellow circles of the remaining commercial marinas on Stock Island. “That’s what’s happening to commercial fishing properties right now.”

Gulf Seafood sits on 8 acres on the southeast end of Stock Island. It currently has space for about two dozen boats, trap storage and a relatively new 2,400 square foot building that could be used as a fish house. The property owners have been struggling to make ends meet, and according to

county staff, recently left town. It is operational, but also needs significant repairs to the seawall, security and the purchase and installation of a travel lift — at a cost of about $2 million.

Currently, it’s in a state of receivership until the government can complete the purchase, and being operated by a group of commercial fishermen who are operating as a nonprofit to “keep the lights on.”

According to a report commissioned by the County, Monroe County landed 17.3 million pounds of seafood valued at $71.2 million in 2015. About 51 percent of that comes through Stock Island and Key West. The report estimated the value of the landings at Gulf Seafood at approximately $4.8 million during 2013.

While the need for a commercial waterfront is clear, the method of operation is not. The management plan presented to the commission for approval follows a “cooperative” model.

The boats would pay annual dockage and trap storage fees (estimated at $14,500 per boat). If the property had an operational fish house, which there is capacity for, the fishermen could sell to the fish house, or sell their catch on the open market. In the case of the open market, this means selling directly to Miami fish houses that send refrigerated trucks from the mainland. The county estimates that the fishermen’s rent would cover, at the bare minimum, the $300,000 cost for administering the property which it intends to outsource. The county would negotiate a percentage of the management’s profits, and use the money to improve the parcel.

While one such cooperative recently formed on Stock Island called

Safe Harbor, it is not the prevailing business model. There are two fish houses on Stock Island — Fish Busterz and the Stock Island Lobster Company.

The fish house business model offers free dockage to its boats, and often emergency financial assistance. Fishermen who dock at the fish house agree to a price set by the fish house.

Mimi Stafford, speaking on behalf of the fishermen who have banded together to keep Gulf Seafood operational until the county can buy it, said that’s not the only business model.

“There’s a cooperative in northern Massachusetts that’s been in operation for 30 years,” Stafford said, adding that fishing cooperatives are springing up all over Florida with the help of the Mayfield grants. “And the fish house business model doesn’t work for everyone. Those fishermen who are business savvy, and willing to take the risk and receive a larger reward are right for the cooperative model. In fact, I believe it is progressive; it is the future.”

Lisa Tennyson is the Monroe County Director of Legislative Affairs and Grants Acquisition. She has been working on the purchase of Gulf Seafood for 10 years, since the Marine Port Advisory Committee recommended its preservation in 2006. She said the broad-stroke management plan presented to the BOCC has many details yet to be determined. She said the Request For Proposal process, where the county will seek applicants to manage the property, is an avenue to explore ideas.

“The RFP can invite any number of scenarios and solicit ideas, keeping it wide open,” Tennyson said. “We may get proposals for traditional fish houses, or we can get interesting ideas

and we can pull those. We’ll see what we get.”

Peter Bacle, who owns the Stock Island Lobster Company, told the BOCC he does not support the management plan as presented.

“This plan has zero percent chance of being successful,” Bacle said. “If you start with 25 boats that can provide the revenue to cover the expense of the property, only about half a dozen boats can pay this rent on a consistent basis. And that’s not counting hurricanes, or blown engines, or the China market.

“What happens to me when I have to compete with a fish house that is subsidized by my own tax dollars? I’ve spent the last 40 years dealing with commercial fishing regulations. The final chapter is the government coming in and physically taking it over. There’s no winner in this except for a handful of fishermen that win the lottery without putting in any money.”

And that’s the other rub — what type of applicants would be eligible?

Would they be local? Would they be top-producers? And how can young commercial fishermen expect to compete if they cannot afford to expand their business — buying more trap tags or additional boats — without the security of long-term waterfront space?

“We haven’t gotten to that level of detail yet,” said Tennyson. “Those are very strong, very serious concerns.”

Tennyson said she plans to research eligibility criteria at similar operations and even ask for direction on RFP proposals from potential facility managers.

Kohlage said it is unknowable who will have the advantage — a cooperative fisherman or a fish house fisherman.

“We can’t require a fish house to reveal their numbers, so I just don’t know. The main focus is to preserve this as working waterfront,” said Kolhage. “If we don’t do that it will be upscale development of some kind.

We know how important fisheries are to the state of Florida.”

Tennyson said the business model is secondary to the property itself.

“The commercial fish house is not the primary purpose of the grant. The primary purpose of the grant is to secure the working waterfront,” she said.

Kolhage said he’s uneasy about the county entering into a private sector endeavor.

“This is not something that I like to do. This is by necessity,” Kohlage said.

“That’s why the state has this grant program which is designated specifically for this purpose. We don’t want to put any existing business out of business, because that would be contrary to the whole idea which is to preserve them.”

nited Way of the Florida Keys will distribute a total of $185,000 in grants to local nonprofit agencies in 201718. Fifteen programs have been identified so far for funding through UWFK’s traditional funding process in one of three United Way focus areas: access to nutritious food for people in critical need; early childhood or after-school care with an educational or positive behavioral component; or safety net services, including information and referral or short-term emergency response.

UWFK is also releasing a request for proposals to organizations offering comprehensive after school and out of school time care in support of working families. This additional $30,000 investment in community support will help organizations serving children through all areas of the Keys.

Alyssa Turner, 18, has racked up more than 400 hours of community service during high school.

That means coastal cleanups, bridge runs, student tutoring, seafood festivals and helping out in the school’s success center and clothing closet.

“Volunteering has played a big role in my life an taught me valuable lessons. It’s really rewarding to give back,” she said.

Turner has a strong interest in science. She’s taken AP environmental science, AP Physics, AP Chemistry and AP Biology. She says it’s her “strongest subject,” and plans to pursue that interest at Florida State University. She is enrolled in FSU’s WIMSE program — Women in Math Science and Engineering. It is a communal living and learning situation which will, among other things, give Turner the opportunity to participate in research projects as an undergrad.

onroe County high school seniors will be walking across stage next week from May 31June 2. (Coral Shores High School on Wednesday, Marathon High School on Thursday and Key West High School on Friday.) The Keys Weekly chose to highlight a few graduating seniors from each school, a nod to their achievements in and out of the classroom. Good luck, class of 2017!

Rachel Philcox, 18, is headed to Florida Southern College in Lakeland at the end of this summer.

After six years playing volleyball and softball, she’s planning on a short break from official play. “I’ll probably join some club teams — they have both beach and indoor volleyball at that school,” she said. “But I might go out for the school team in my sophomore year.” (Philcox also joined the girls’ weightlifting team her senior year and, much to her surprise, really like the individual achievement aspect of the endeavor.)

She plans to study business, with a possible minor in communications. And she wants to build on her community service, too. (She’s held many leadership positions in school clubs, including class president.)

“I think business is a good fit.

It will give me the opportunity to travel and my business degree can help me figure out how to give back,” she said.

He’s always known one thing — Andrew Perry,18, wants to be an architect. He’s headed to Florida International University to take part in the special five-year program. “Ever since I was little I wanted to be an architect,” he said, “it’s lucky that I have a knack for math.”

To be accepted, Perry had to pull together a portfolio in two weeks. He designed a custom bicycle, shoe and chair. He’s practiced the skills he needs doing DIY work for friends and family — barn bulding and dry wall work.

He also honed his sensibilities by playing video games.

“It gives you an idea of how to design a building,” he said, mentioning games like MineCraft.

“I also really liked playing Poly Bridge. You make designs that can support a lot of weight. There’s a lot of strategy to it.”

Perry said he’s looking forward to his time at FIU, where he will have a dedicated work space complete with a drafting board and the chance to compete in fun engineering competitions including designing and building a pair of shoes that can walk on water.

DOUBLE GRADUATE

When Amanda Ban accepts her high school diploma, she will be adding to her Associate’s degree.

Through dual enrollment, the 18-year-old has already finished half of her college degree. On top of that, she was named to the FHSFA (Florida High School Athletic Association) All State Girls Team — only one of 12 girls to be selected in the entire state of Florida.

“I knew I was going to [get an Associate’s] before graduating since 2011. I told my mom and she thought I was crazy,” Ban said. She started taking classes at FKCC the summer of her sophomore year and spent two days a week on the college campus to earn 61 credits. Oh, and she played softball and soccer all throughout high school, and joined the girls’ weightlifting team this year.

Mid-August she’s headed to Carolina State University to get a dual degree in environmental engineering and applied math. After that, law school is a real possibility.

“I want to protect the ecosystem while still making good use of its resources,” she said.

Bucking the family trend of joining the U.S. Air Force, Truman Berger is already a part of the U.S. Army. He joined the reserves in September and plans to attend basic training next month. After that, he’s headed to the University of North Georgia in the spring of 2018.

“Then I will be a part of the cadet program and the reserves,” he said. “My goal is to get a degree in criminal justice, and learn some forensics, and be commissioned as an officer.”

Why not the Air Force, why the Army? “They called me first,” he said, shrugging, “but my grandfather was a little mad, he was a colonel in the Air Force.”

Berger,18, looks forward to being deployed. “My unit did a sweet tour in Bulgaria. Maybe I’ll get to do something like that in lieu of a semester abroad.”

Berger said he appreciates the military for a couple of reasons — the patriotic outlet as well as the discipline.

Hannah Gracy, 18, is an interesting study in contrasts. She’s a top scholar, one of three contenders for high school valedictorian with a GPA of 4.655, and a complete thespian, as well. By turns goofy and poised, she has the ability to command the stage like no other.

She’s appeared in 11 mainstage productions at Marathon High School and a couple of variety shows. She’s also had a part in the season opener every year at Marathon Community Theatre, and this year had a part in “Cabaret.”

“It was the best experience ever. It took me outside my comfort zone. And the friendships I made I have maintained even after the show ended,” she said. “I got a little family out of it.”

Gracy plans to major in Biology, and minor in French, at University of Florida with an eye on the grand plan to become a doctor. Maybe even a physician with Doctors Without Borders in the Sudan.

For such a smart girl, with serious abilities, it is a wonder to see her in the comedic roles on stage. She played Gertrude in “Suessical.”

“I’ve never related to a character in a musical so much. She was sweet and funny and awkward.”

Theodore Violissi has a very specific goal in mind after he graduates high school. He’s going to lineman school in Trenton Georgia for three months.

“Then I’ll go straight into the workforce,” he said. It will take another 8,000 hours of operating as an apprentice before he becomes an electrical journeyman.

Throughout high school, the 18-yeasr-old has played soccer and been a member of the cross country team, as well as dressing out for two years of football. His passions include Jeeps, like the 1985 CJ7 he rebuilt with the help of friends “from the ground up.”

He always has a smile for everyone, and is welcomed where ever he goes — including Mongolia.

“I spent a month there with the Experience in International Living program,” he said.

But the Keys will always be home, he hopes. Born and raised in Marathon, he hopes to make Marathon his future home, as well, securing a job with Florida Keys Electric Cooperative.

“I want to stay in the Keys,” he said. “I like the small community, knowing everybody.”

Clay Daniels, 18, is headed to Florida Southwestern’s campus in Fort Myers.

He plans to study for an Associate’s in business and then either help with his grandfather’s cattle farm on the mainland or his father’s commercial fishing business in the Keys. Preferably both.

Ana Rangel Trujillo has applied herself to learning English with dedication and tenacity. Born and raised in Guadalajara in the county of Jalisco, Mexico, she moved to the Keys three years ago and began Marathon High School as a sophomore.

“Moving to America has changed my life completely, and given me the tools I need in order to succeed,” she said.

She is a Take Stock in Children graduate, and credits her mentor Celia Hitchins, and counselor Katrina Wiatt with their encouragement. She also has a special thank you for Ms. Liz Ramos, her AP Spanish teacher.

Ana, 18, has spent just as much time giving back to the community — volunteering at the recent softball tournament, and participating in food drives and Toys for Tots, as well as fundraising for the school’s club for students for whom English is a second language.

She plans to attend Gulf Coast University next fall and get a degree in mathematics — the universal language — and specialize in either business or education.

“It was certainly my easiest class in high school because I struggled with the English language,” she said, laughing.

She will be the first in her family to attend university.

“I’m not even really sure how he does it — are they watercolor or digital art or some combination of the two?”

Zoe, 18, renewed her interest in art her freshman year of high school.

“I am very good at painting people, but terrible at objects.

That’s the reverse experience of most artists,” she said.

Headed to the New College of Florida near Sarasota, Zoe intends to study both art and theater technology — such as lighting and sound design. She spent three years working behind the scenes for the Marathon High School drama club.

Her final piece of high school artwork is a 30- by 30-inch recreation of a character from “Wicked and The Divine” comic book by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie.

STUDENTS ‘SAVED BY THE BELL’

EARLY GRADUATE

At just 16 years old, Mia Bruno is through with high school. In fact, this will be her first summer in a long time that doesn’t involve cracking a book until she gets to University of Tampa campus in late August.

“And, no, I’m not going to rush through college,” she said, laughing.

Mia started on this quest two years ago. The summer after eight grade, she took classes online and entered school as a sophomore.

The next summer, she took her junior classes online, and came back as a senior.

“I didn’t have a summer really.

It was eat, sleep, study,” she said.

“This summer I plan to hang out with my friends, go out on the boat and to the beach, go to the movies.”

She wants to get a Bachelor’s degree in some kind of science, and then go to medical school to become an obstetrician/gynecologist. As part of the school’s health club, she’s toured the different departments at various hospitals.

“I think this is a happy area of medicine,” she said.

HARD WORKER

Richard Francisco Garcia Cabral is Marathon born and raised.

“I’ve lived here my whole life and I’m about to graduate high school. Finally,” he said.

He plans to take classes at Florida Keys Community College or perhaps a trade school to study auto mechanics in Orlando. He maintained a respectable grade point average, all the while working 20 to 25 hours a week at a local pizza parlor.

“I wanted to help my family,” he said, “so I didn’t get the chance to play sports.”

What leisure time he did have, he spent with his family.

“We go to the beach or we cook out. I’m a family guy,” said the 17-year-old.

He will be the first to graduate in his family, he said, which makes them “pretty happy.”

“I am just waiting to write the next chapter. Still living, still learning,” Richard said.

School Board alters start times for Lower Keys area schools

O

n May 23, the Monroe County School District met to discuss a number of topics during its scheduled workshop and School Board meeting.

The final item on the workshop’s agenda addressed the changing of school start times throughout the District.

Monroe County Superintendent Mark Porter had previously recommended no changes to start times for elementary and middle/high schools located in the Upper and Middle Keys. There was, however, discussion of altering times for Lower Keys area schools.

After minor changes were made to the initial proposal, the board approved the consolidation of previously staggered start times for K-8 students at Horace O’Bryant School. The board also approved a 15 minute earlier start time for Poinciana Elementary School to address issues over student drop-off and dismissals.

The board voted 3-1 in favor, with Board Member Bobby Highsmith dissenting. (Board Member Andy Griffith was absent.)

Before the vote, Highsmith expressed disappointment, explaining that a start time of 7:30 a.m. is too early for his district’s high schoolers. He explained that the issue of start times has had more public input than any other he’s discussed in his time on the board. He said keeping the early start was a disservice to Keys students. In arguing for later start times, Highsmith cited the American Pediatric Society’s recommendation of 8:30 a.m.

Porter said the main obstacle to changing the beginning of school day is lack of school bus drivers. Porter said that due to the limitations of driver availability in the labor force, he was “… not confident at this time that we can meet that expectation.”

While the board approved the Superintendent’s recommendations to adopt minor changes, there was a shared interest in obtaining additional drivers so future discussions would not stall due to similar conservations regarding transportation.

Interview with John Padget

U

nderstated in demeanor, John Padget doesn’t like to attract attention, but he certainly has earned it. Padget, a long time and formidable leader when it comes to education in Florida, has earned his stripes. A former businessman with an MBA from Harvard, Padget has devoted his later years to charitable projects such as Take Stock in Children (overseeing it grow from a few children to hundreds) and founded <Monroe /> COMPUTE$, a program that provides grants for students who complete computer certifications. The former Superintendent of Monroe County Schools (2003-04), Padget also is President-Emeritus of the Monroe County Education Foundation and is the finance committee Chair on the board of the Florida Keys Community College Foundation. And, finally, he just finished two terms on the State Board of Education as vice chair. Padget may not be a teacher, but there is certainly a lot to learn from him.

Why are you drawn to fighting for education?

Most students want to live a more prosperous life than their parents. All else being equal, education is the only path to get there.

What did you learn as vicechair of Florida’s State Board of Education for two terms?

Painfully, I’ve learned that Americans are no longer No. 1 in the world when it comes to knowledge learned in high school and college. To protect our economic future, we can’t be complacent. We have work to do!

How did you come to discover Take Stock In Children?

Where do you see it’s future?

When I discovered Take Stock in Children in 1990, it served only a handful of students. I thought it could benefit many more kids and families. I was right. Its future is unlimited. We even have university graduates sending money back to support their parents!

What initially drew you to Key West, as well as becoming such an advocate for the community?

I wanted a smaller diverse town, where I could make a difference.

I made a good choice!

You’re community awards are numerous, but looking back, what has made the difference for you?

Watching lower-income kids succeed beyond their wildest dreams.

What is left to do on your bucket list?

Lots. Stay tuned.

What is <Monroe /> COMPUTE$? Where did you get the idea for it?

American kids are lacking IT expertise, so this is a program to incentivize kids in learning these skills. These are electives, so students must sign up for them. They get cash awards for successful completion of a national exam in each course.

They can test when ready; the larger awards go to the first who finish — “The early bird gets the worm!”

What are some of Monroe County School’s achievements in the past decade?

What can we improve upon?

The schools’ leadership is less politicized and more professional. We need more housing options so we can attract new teachers.

What are some concerns parents should be more aware of when it comes to today’s education standards?

Graduating high school is not enough to navigate life successfully. Today’s graduates need to add industry certificates or an associate’s degree to be marketable in the economy of the future. They have to become “life-long learners,” continuing to sharpen their skills.

What book would you recommend to everyone?

“Guns, Germs & Steel” by Jared Diamond.

If you could have lunch with one notable person, who would it be? Why? Nelson Mandela. I admire his quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Develop your grit — perseverance and passion for long-term goals.

What piece of advice would you give to high school graduates today?

Develop your “grit” — perseverance and passion for long-term goals.

rimal Grove and Keys West’s 2 Cents restaurant partnered up with the Key West High School culinary students who excelled in 2016-2017. The students, who all passed their Serve Safe certifications, were able to tour the grove and learn some culinary skills from 2 Cents chef Henry Christian and sous chef Rebekah Lee. Grimal Grove is a tropical fruit grove located in Big Pine Key that was left in ruin after Hurricane Georges, and has been rejuvenated by the nonprofit Growing Hope Initiative.

arathon High School junior Ben Ryder was the only Keys student to be invited to the annual Sunshine State Scholars higher education workshop.

(Or, one of 80 selected from more than 200,000 applicants.)

The weekend in Gainesville is designed for students entering a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) field. The highlights included senior executives from Lockheed Martin Missles, SeaWorld, Microsoft and Limbitless Solutions; the last a company that 3D prints bionic prosthesis for children in need.

That was particularly interesting for Ryder.

“But I also got to see what the actual industries are like, in terms of the day-to-day jobs these people perform,” Ryder said.

He’s leaning towards a degree in mechanical engineering.

“After speaking with people there, I learned it’s the broadest type of engineering degree. If you study mechanical engineering, you can do just about any other type with a few exceptions.”

He was accompanied on the trip by MHS science teacher Carrollynn Cox, who has also accompanied recent MHS graduates Seth Landry and John Galganic.

“This program recognizes exceptional students, students like Ben,” she said.

The program is designed to keep top students in Florida, although Ryder said he is nowhere near ready to make that decision. He’s toured various schools in Florida but still wants to visit Florida Polytechnic College, Florida Institute of Technology and Florida State University. He also hopes to visit North Carolina State and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

And the best part? He rolled back into town on Saturday night in time to attend his junior prom at the Florida Keys Country Club.

MORE SHOES NEEDED Animal shelter nearing goal

If you had a work van filled — and we mean filled to the tippytop-brim — with gently worn shoes, would you need more?

The answer is yes. Tara Vickrey of the Florida Keys SPCA shelter in Marathon said it is a little more than half way to its goal of collecting 100 bags of shoes. The campaign is in conjunction with a national organization that picks up the shoes and drops off a check. The shoes are sent to developing countries where they can be fixed and sold in a bid to build micro-enterprises in places like Uganda and Haiti. The campaign will run for another month. • Tell others your own memories of the fallen on Memorial Day. I lost several friends in Iraq and through my years of military service. But I tell people how they lived, the type of people that they were, and how their friendship still benefits me today. One friend, was an amazing shot with a pistol, rifle, or a machine gun. When I joined my Special Forces team, I was the worst shot on the whole team. He taught me, painstakingly, how to shoot at an expert level over several months with both U.S. and foreign weapons.

To this day, his lesson in the importance of being an expert in your profession and teaching others how to be an expert too was an invaluable personal and professional lesson for me.

These are the stories that I want others to remember about my fallen friends. I don’t want how they died to be remembered. I want their smiles, their funny stories, and the lessons and leadership that they enacted daily to me the memories for others.

• Give donations, not charity, to the families of the fallen. Remembering the spouses and the children of the fallen is especially important on Memorial Day and throughout the year. The key phrase is to find ways to support, to mentor, and to employ spouses and children of the fallen.

Unmindful charity is easy, but there are other ways to help in a meaningful manner. Tutoring a child, supporting a college fund, helping a fallen spouse network and continue a career are all great ways to support the families of the fallen.

• Make Memorial Day personal by creating traditions that truly recognize and appreciate the fallen.

Remembering those that fell in battle as good, kind, funny, and amazing people creates a deep sense of loss, but a powerful, and unfading appreciation of fallen soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen — not as numbers — but as people. Helping surviving family members is a moving step in appreciation to ensure that the families’ loss is remembered and appreciated so they can move on with their lives.

Do all you can to remember at a personal level this Memorial Day.

n a stilted Big Pine Key house, disabled Army veteran Donald Pereau’s windows needed some help. “It’s tough not knowing when storms are coming and having to worry about how the windows will get shuttered and un-shuttered,” he said.

That’s when Team Depot, the Marathon Home Depot store volunteers, stepped up to help Pereau. With grants for wounded veterans through Home Depot, the team secured $16,000 to help replace the old windows with hurricane impact windows in the home.

They also had enough left over to paint the interior of the house with a fresh coat of paint.

“From the injuries I sustained while enlisted, it’s a blessing for them to come out here and help me out,” said Pereau, who served from 1997 to 2001 and then again from 2004 to 2016 before receiving a medical discharge.

“Not having to worry about storms coming will be a huge help.”

The windows in his home hadn’t been replaced since it was originally built, so in addition to not having to worry about shutters anymore, he is also excited about the energy costs that will come from the upgrade.

Team Depot does about $20 million a year for veterans around the country. The local team has done everything from installing ramps to donating grills for the American Legion.

“We try to do one big project a quarter,” said Team Depot volunteer Scott Zimmerman.

A poll showed that one out of five Americans believes that our former President, Barack Obama, is a follower of Islam. The fact is that Obama has been a Christian nearly all of his life, attended Christian churches, and was a member of a congregation led by a certain Christian pastor who caused Obama no small amount of political indigestion (remember Rev. Jeremiah Wright?).

Still, the belief remains with one out of five of us that Obama is a Muslim.

Who eats bacon? (Look it up — it’s on the Internet.) Happy Ramadan.

It gets worse. One out of five Americans can’t identify the United States on a map of the world. I’m not sure if it’s the same one out of five Americans who don’t know what nation we declared independence from back in 1776, but I bet it is. And I also bet it’s the same one out of five Americans who pee in the pool.

Now some of you may be thinking that one out of five Americans is only 20 percent of us, and that it’s not really that bad that 20 percent of us didn’t pay attention in history or geography classes. Fine. Keep on believing that it’s not a horrible comment on (the lack of) American intelligence. Just remember that the next time you’re in a swimming pool with 50 of our fellow citizens, inclusive of those one out of five (or 10 in 50) Americans who are peeing in the pool as we speak. Towel, please.

It still doesn’t get better. One

out of five of us believes that the sun revolves around the Earth. And you thought it was only pre-Copernican astronomers, popes, and Kardashians? In concordance with this return to medieval thinking, one out of five Americans believes that witches are real! With the popularity of the teen vampire and werewolf movies and TV shows over the last several years, I’m sure that belief in all scary monsters has risen exponentially. But it’s only 20 percent, right?

One out of five Americans doesn’t use the Internet. At all. This time, it’s probably not the same one out of five Americans who are unhappy with their broadband connection speed. But it just might be the same one out of five American males of working age who don’t have jobs.

I’ve been using the “one out of five Americans” grouping like it’s a bad thing. It’s not always a bad thing, however, to be outside the norm, apart from the great unwashed, above average, or simply brilliant (like the above average and brilliant people who read this column). In a recent survey done by the McCormick Foundation, a majority of Americans were able to name freedom of speech as one of the freedoms protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

That’s good. Just a little over one out of five Americans, however, were able to name freedom of religion as one of them. And only one in a 1,000 could name all five (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly/ right to peaceably assemble, and freedom to petition the government for redress of grievances).

What’s worse, a McClatchy-Ipsos poll found that 51 percent of Americans agree with this statement: “It is necessary to give up some civil liberties in order to make the country safe from terrorism.” That’s one out of two. So just how far are we willing to go?

Benjamin Franklin once said, “They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.”

It’s one (out of five) of the true things one can find on the Internet!

hat goes 18 knots and is 80 proof? A Rumrunner. Paul Menta — a local fisherman, chef and kitesurfer, can cross it off his bucket list.

Owner of the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, Menta just sailed the 90 miles to Cuba on the Schooner Wolf and brought the first bottle of Key West rum to Cuba, ever.

“When I decided to do a distillery, I have always wanted to see the embargo lifted and be the first rumrunner,” said Menta. Menta just returned this past Monday from sailing to Cuba with Captain Finbar after spending a week cruising around the countryside in an old Chevy and sharing his rum with Cuban people.

“You have to have a lot of confidence in your product to show up in Cuba with your own rum,” Menta said, laughing. “But I loved chemistry as a kid and I knew I could make something good.” And the Cubans loved it too, immediately putting it to good use in an authentic mojito.

They also invited Menta to a private Basilica concert and poet Orlando LaGuardia wrote a proclamation declaring him the first official Key West rumrunner.

“It was my dream to do this.”

“This was my way to say thank you,” said Menta, who poured shots gratis as a gesture of friendship with Key West’s island neighbors. “It’s really cool to be so close to Cuba, now that it is open. I don’t think it’s ever going to affect us in a negative way. This will be a plus for Key Westers.”

‘RUN, FORREST, RUN’ 100 MILES OF KEYS ASPHALT

ighteen of my miles later, the girls in my van had seen more of me than anyone ever should. Starting before dawn and finishing after the midnight hour, there is something about running 100 miles with six friends that is oddly appealing for some unknown reason.

County helps residents dispose of hazardous waste

arathon Mayor “Doc Dan” Zieg was just one resident who took advantage of the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household waste this past Saturday at the Monroe County Public Works Facility on Aviation Boulevard.

A total of 1,940 pounds of hazardous household waste and 1,480 pounds of electronic waste were collected over the course of the morning.

Household hazardous wastes are products often found in your garage, sheds, storage areas, or under your kitchen sink. They are corrosive, flammable, reactive, or toxic. These chemicals can contaminate our drinking water as well as Monroe County’s sensitive ecosystem. The county also collects old computers, batteries, cell phones, printers and other electronics that contain materials hazardous to the environment. The next collection in Marathon will be held on Sept. 30.

he Turtle Hospital had quite a showing Tuesday morning for the release of “Don,” a 200-pound adult male loggerhead turtle who was rehabbed after an entanglement with fishing line. It took him a month to heal from the line injuries on its face and shoulder. Sombrero Beach was buzzing with locals and visitors wishing Don well on his journeys on World Turtle Day. — Weekly Staff report

artender Sharese said the move to the Keys was easy for her to make. “I came on a whim,” she said. “I had never even been here before, but I sold everything, packed up my car with my dog and $800 and made the move.”

She quickly realized $800 didn’t get her very far in Marathon, but fell in love with the area. She’s been in the Keys the past two years and at Sunset Grille the past two months.

The most popular item she says is the Castaway Coconut, made with Coco Lopez, Cruzan vanilla rum, pineapple, orange juice and fresh grated nutmeg. “The big seller is the coconut it comes in,” she said, “and, it’s also a piggy bank.”

When she moved to town, it was the first drink she ordered. “It just screams Keys,” she said and suggested the tuna poke or jerk mahi sandwich to accompany the drink.

When she isn’t working, she’s playing with her five-month-old daughter Zoe, her dog, and playing the guitar. “I am also still working on my tan, we do live in the islands after all,” she said.
