OH, YEAH The Bubbas are coming

F

or three years the Bubbas (Key West People’s Choice Awards) have allowed Key West locals to weigh in and decide on everything from the best Key Lime Pie to the best local celebrities in the Southernmost City. And on July 15, the fourth installment of the anticipated awards banquet will take place at the Key West Theater.

“I never would have imagined the Bubbas would have taken on a life of it’s own just after four years,” said Key West Weekly owner Britt Myers. “We have been fortunate to have great community support, which has in turn supported some great local causes.”

To date, the Bubbas have raised more than $40,000 for local nonprofits, including the Bahama Village Music Program and Samuel’s House. This year, the program will benefit Wesley House Family Services, along with the Rotary Club of Key West — who is also stepping up to take on the role of ballot counting.

“I always like to remind everyone this is for charity,” said Myers. “Everyone has an opinion and with so many great choices in Key West, the winners are always subjective. The main thing is to have fun and support a great cause.”

Once again, First State Bank, Waste Management and Horan & Higgins have graciously chipped in as sponsors, along with the generosity of the Key West Theater, who will act as host to the Bubbas for a third time. In addition, Rick Lopez and his team at Florida Keys Media will partner with the Keys Weekly to produce the 2017 Bubbas.

Interview with John Padget

U

nderstated in demeanor, John Padget doesn’t like to attract attention, but he certainly has earned it. Padget, a long time and formidable leader when it comes to education in Florida, has earned his stripes. A former businessman with an MBA from Harvard, Padget has devoted his later years to charitable projects such as Take Stock in Children (overseeing it grow from a few children to hundreds) and founded <Monroe /> COMPUTE$, a program that provides grants for students who complete computer certifications. The former Superintendent of Monroe County Schools (2003-04), Padget also is President-Emeritus of the Monroe County Education Foundation and is the finance committee Chair on the board of the Florida Keys Community College Foundation. And, finally, he just finished two terms on the State Board of Education as vice chair. Padget may not be a teacher, but there is certainly a lot to learn from him.

Why are you drawn to fighting for education?

Most students want to live a more prosperous life than their parents. All else being equal, education is the only path to get there.

What did you learn as vicechair of Florida’s State Board of Education for two terms?

Painfully, I’ve learned that Americans are no longer No. 1 in the world when it comes to knowledge learned in high school and college. To protect our economic future, we can’t be complacent. We have work to do!

How did you come to discover Take Stock In Children?

Where do you see it’s future?

When I discovered Take Stock in Children in 1990, it served only a handful of students. I thought it could benefit many more kids and families. I was right. Its future is unlimited. We even have university graduates sending money back to support their parents!

What initially drew you to Key West, as well as becoming such an advocate for the community?

I wanted a smaller diverse town, where I could make a difference.

I made a good choice!

You’re community awards are numerous, but looking back, what has made the difference for you?

Watching lower-income kids succeed beyond their wildest dreams.

What is left to do on your bucket list?

Lots. Stay tuned.

What is <Monroe /> COMPUTE$? Where did you get the idea for it?

American kids are lacking IT expertise, so this is a program to incentivize kids in learning these skills. These are electives, so students must sign up for them. They get cash awards for successful completion of a national exam in each course.

They can test when ready; the larger awards go to the first who finish — “The early bird gets the worm!”

What are some of Monroe County School’s achievements in the past decade?

What can we improve upon?

The schools’ leadership is less politicized and more professional. We need more housing options so we can attract new teachers.

What are some concerns parents should be more aware of when it comes to today’s education standards?

Graduating high school is not enough to navigate life successfully. Today’s graduates need to add industry certificates or an associate’s degree to be marketable in the economy of the future. They have to become “life-long learners,” continuing to sharpen their skills.

What book would you recommend to everyone?

“Guns, Germs & Steel” by Jared Diamond.

If you could have lunch with one notable person, who would it be? Why? Nelson Mandela. I admire his quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Develop your grit — perseverance and passion for long-term goals.

What piece of advice would you give to high school graduates today?

Develop your “grit” — perseverance and passion for long-term goals.

The students, who all passed their Serve Safe certifications, were able to tour the grove and learn some culinary skills from 2 Cents chef Henry Christian and sous chef Rebekah Lee. Grimal Grove is a tropical fruit grove located in Big Pine Key that was left in ruin after Hurricane Georges, and has been rejuvenated by the nonprofit Growing Hope Initiative.

onroe County is one step closer to acquiring the 8-acre parcel known as Gulf Seafood on Stock Island. At its most recent meeting, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners approved a broad-stroke management plan, one of the requirements of the state’s Stan Mayfield Working Waterfront grant. Monroe County will pay in about $5 million, and the state grant will cover $2 million.

to make ends meet, and according to county staff, recently left town. It is operational, but also needs significant repairs to the seawall, security and the purchase and installation of a travel lift — at a cost of about $2 million.

Currently, it’s in a state of receivership until the government can complete the purchase, and being operated by a group of commercial fishermen who are operating as a nonprofit to “keep the lights on.”

According to a report commissioned by the County, Monroe County landed 17.3 million pounds of seafood valued at $71.2 million in 2015. About 51 percent of that comes through Stock Island and Key West. The report estimated the value of the landings at Gulf Seafood at approximately $4.8 million during 2013.

While one such cooperative recently formed on Stock Island called Safe Harbor, it is not the prevailing business model. There are two fish houses on Stock Island — Fish Busterz and the Stock Island Lobster Company.

The fish house business model offers free dockage to its boats, and often emergency financial assistance. Fishermen who dock at the fish house agree to a price set by the fish house.

Mimi Stafford, speaking on behalf of the fishermen who have banded together to keep Gulf Seafood operational until the county can buy it, said that’s not the only business model.

“There’s a cooperative in northern Massachusetts that’s been in operation for 30 years,” Stafford said, adding that fishing cooperatives are springing up all over Florida with the help of the

The need to preserve working waterfront, both fishermen and government agree, is dire.

“That’s the most dramatic visual that we have,” said Commissioner Danny Kolhage, pointing to a map with four red circles denoting former commercial working waterfront that have been developed into high-end marinas, and three yellow circles of the remaining commercial marinas on Stock Island. “That’s what’s happening to commercial fishing properties right now.”

Gulf Seafood sits on 8 acres on the southeast end of Stock Island. It currently has space for about two dozen boats, trap storage and a relatively new 2,400 square foot building that could be used as a fish house. The property owners have been struggling

While the need for a commercial waterfront is clear, the method of operation is not. The management plan presented to the commission for approval follows a “cooperative” model.

The boats would pay annual dockage and trap storage fees (estimated at $14,500 per boat). If the property had an operational fish house, which there is capacity for, the fishermen could sell to the fish house, or sell their catch on the open market. In the case of the open market, this means selling directly to Miami fish houses that send refrigerated trucks from the mainland. The county estimates that the fishermen’s rent would cover, at the bare minimum, the $300,000 cost for administering the property which it intends to outsource. The county would negotiate a percentage of the manage-

“And the fish house business model doesn’t work for everyone. Those fishermen who are business savvy, and willing to take the risk and receive a larger reward are right for the cooperative model.

In fact, I believe it is progressive; it is the future.”

Lisa Tennyson is the Monroe County Director of Legislative Affairs and Grants Acquisition. She has been working on the purchase of Gulf Seafood for 10

years, since the Marine Port Advisory Committee recommended its preservation in 2006. She said the broadstroke management plan presented to the BOCC has many details yet to be determined. She said the Request For Proposal process, where the county will seek applicants to manage the property, is an avenue to explore ideas.

“The RFP can invite any number of scenarios and solicit ideas, keeping it wide open,” Tennyson said. “We may get proposals for traditional fish houses, or we can get interesting ideas and we can pull those. We’ll see what we get.”

Peter Bacle, who owns the Stock Island Lobster Company, told the BOCC he does not support the management plan as presented.

“This plan has zero percent chance of being successful,” Bacle said. “If you start with 25 boats that can provide the revenue to cover the expense of the property, only about half a dozen boats can pay this rent on a consistent basis. And that’s not counting hurricanes, or blown engines, or the China market.

“What happens to me when I have to compete with a fish house that is subsidized by my own tax dollars? I’ve spent the last 40 years dealing with commercial fishing regulations. The final chapter is the government coming in and physically taking it over. There’s no winner in this except for a handful of fishermen that win the lottery without putting in any money.”

And that’s the other rub — what type of applicants would be eligible?

Would they be local? Would they be top-producers? And how can young commercial fishermen expect to compete if they cannot afford to expand their business — buying more trap tags or additional boats — without the security of long-term waterfront space?

“We haven’t gotten to that level of detail yet,” said Tennyson. “Those are very strong, very serious concerns.”

Tennyson said she plans to research eligibility criteria at similar operations and even ask for direction on RFP proposals from potential facility managers.

Kohlage said it is unknowable who will have the advantage — a cooperative fisherman or a fish house fisherman.

“We can’t require a fish house to reveal their numbers, so I just don’t know. The main focus is to preserve this as working waterfront,” said Kolhage. “If we don’t do that it will be upscale development of some kind.

We know how important fisheries are to the state of Florida.”

Tennyson said the business model is secondary to the property itself.

“The commercial fish house is not the primary purpose of the grant. The primary purpose of the grant is to secure the working waterfront,” she said.

Kolhage said he’s uneasy about the county entering into a private sector endeavor.

“This is not something that I like to do. This is by necessity,” Kohlage said.

“That’s why the state has this grant program which is designated specifically for this purpose. We don’t want to put any existing business out of business, because that would be contrary to the whole idea which is to preserve them.”

Talkin’ to the Big Head

KW: Most everyone, whether they realize it or not, knows your music. For the causal fan, how would you describe your sound?

TM: I would say we are a roots oriented rock ‘n’ roll band. As songwriters, we’ve had a lengthy career of original songs, but our style is all over the place.

he true testament to any great band is to evolve and somehow resonate beyond musical genres and singular fan bases. For Big Head Todd and The Monsters (BHTM), who play two shows this Saturday and Sunday at the Key West Theater, the band can certainly hold their own claim to being one of the rare, enduring bands spanning several generations of music.

Although the Colorado-based band formed in the mid ’80s, many casual fans still know BHTM for a flurry of top 15 songs in the early ’90s, such as “Bittersweet” and “Broken Hearted Savior,” which still have mass radio appeal today. However, much like their better-known hits, BHTM continue to produce original songs that reverberate amongst a wide array of fans.

In early June, BHTM will play at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater before more than 8,500 fans (a venue they’ve sold out dozens of times over their career). But this weekend, Key West music lovers will have a rare opportunity to hear BHTM in the intimate, personal setting of the Key West Theater. On the eve of the band’s dual shows in the Southernmost City, the Key West Weekly caught up with legendary lead singer Todd Park Mohr to discuss the upcoming shows and more:

Keys Weekly: Have you been to Key West before?

Todd Park Mohr: I’ve never been, but I’ve always wanted to go. It’s always been one of my bucket list items and I’m looking forward to it.

KW: You guys have played Red Rocks over 20 times. What’s it like to go from such a large venue such as that to something much more personable like a Key West Theater?

TM: It really doesn’t change [the approach]. The smallest gigs you might have could end up being your most significant. You just never know who’s out there and what’s going to happen.

KW: You have one of the most unique voices in the business. What comparisons has it drawn?

TM: I could tell you who I wish I could be compared to, like my songwriting heroes. Bob Dylan is at the top. Springsteen. I love Johnny Cash, Hendrix, Muddy Waters. But I don’t know that I would ever be compared to any of those people, but that’s where a lot of my influences came from.

KW: Cliché question. Are you as smart as they say you are and is that where your name Big Head Todd came from?

TM: [laughing] No … people say I’m smart and that’s silly. We were in college and we needed a name for a gig at a party. I think I thought of the name Big Head Todd and a Side of Beef. There’s a blues jazz artist by the name of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and I think that’s sort of where the origins come from.

KW: For the two Key West shows, should fans expect similar sets or a variety between the two nights?

TM: No, we’ll mix it up. Yeah, we’re hoping we’ll get some two timers and have some fun.

KW: What’s the secret to keeping a successful band together for as long as you have?

TM: In a band you have to make harmony — that’s the thing about music I guess.

KW: Do you approach songwriting now, the same way you did 25 years ago?

TM: I’ve gone through phases where I haven’t been as interested, or on the mark, as a writer, but obviously when we started out I had a lot of success as a songwriter and I am still extremely motivated as a writer. I think it’s an incredible opportunity to have something to say and to create music for a living.

KW: You have three hours to kill on the road. What’s your pleasure?

TM: I like to read or play silly video games on the iPad; but if I can practice guitar that would be my preferred thing to do anywhere.

KW: Are you working on anything new now?

TM: We just completed a new album and I think it will be released in the fall. We are going to be playing four to six of those songs at our Key West shows.

PAVING PARADISE? Commission considers garages, traffic in Old Town

t seems rather antithetical to the city’s mission to go “Car Free” and then potentially build parking garages in Old Town. The new Car Free media campaign encourages visitors and residents alike to ride bicycles and use the new Duval Loop bus to discourage driving in Old Town. But Key West City Commissioner Richard Payne is citing three traffic studies recommending more off-street parking to ease the congested streets.

“I don’t think we will ever be ‘car free.’ The campaign will never be successful. Just not gonna happen,” said Payne on Wednesday. On the same day he pulled a resolution to approve two new garages at 609 Greene Street and 616 Simonton Street from the June 6 commission agenda. Instead, Payne is planning a public workshop to discuss the issue. “There are a lot of misconceptions out there and we need to make intelligent decisions,” said Payne.

“I have a lot of concerns about spending $8 million on a garage before seeing how ride sharing affects the

city and giving the Car Free campaign a chance,” said Commissioner Sam Kaufman. He said he has received dozens of emails against parking structures and cannot recall one in favor. Instead, Kaufman said he would like to prioritize infrastructure funds for immediate concerns like affordable housing or repairing existing roads.

The Conch Republic Seafood Company is handing out information packets that explains the garage would add 250 parking spaces, but would eliminate spaces for nine existing businesses including the historic fishing industry and Reef Relief. Public concern also laments the loss of the view of the historic harbor. Also, the Bight Board has voted against a garage at the harbor.

Payne in response says, “It’s a scare tactic. Businesses would profit and everyone would be accommodated. We can’t preserve what is gone.”

Since the removal of the items from the agenda, Kaufman said he plans to carry on with his meeting to hear the public’s concerns. “But I don’t want to waste 12 hours on a city-hosted workshop on garages that may ultimately be voted down, and still doesn’t fix our problems.”

inger / songwriter Joal Rush has been living and performing in Key West for more than 15 years. He is in the midst of completing his newest recordings, soon to be released, titled “Kaleidescope.” A widely respected musician, Joal is excited to be opening for Big Head Todd performing at the Key West Theater this Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28. (See story, page 10.)

Last week, he performed for the fifth time at this year’s Key West Songwriter festival. “The festival is an amazing thing,” he said. “This year ‘The Art of Sound’ and the role

they played as sound technicians was a big part of the performances and contributed to the sound. Every year the festival continues to progress and get better.”

Born and bred in South Carolina, Joal now splits his time between Nashville and Key West, investing more time in songwriting. He views songwriting as a discipline: “As a working musician you have to make the time to write … it’s a combination of working it like a job and combining it with inspiration. Hopefully the two find a perfect marriage.”

Like most musicians, Joal doesn’t make his money off recordings sales, but rather working as an everyday performer. It has taken a year to record the 12 songs, and the plan is to release the recordings as three separate volumes, titled “Kalaidescope Emotions.”

“I’m going to use this recording to get back on tour, with a booking agent and go national, tour across the U.S.,” he said.

While we talked, Joal played some of the recordings for me, and after listening to the new recordings, the title seems very fitting. With a wide range of styles and influences, his newest music can be described as soulful Americana. Joal describes his musical influences as Ryan Adams, Jackson Browne, and Tom Petty. His recording “Moonshine,” has hints of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” while “Sweeter by the Day” is a bit more funky with a very cool sound reminding me of Lyle Lovett.

Some of his new songs come from working as a duo with long time friend and collaborator Andy Luadzers. “‘Darlin’ Stay’ was written after an emotional breakup with a girlfriend. It was how I coped … I channeled my emotion in to the music,” Joal said.

Besides opening this weekend for Big Head Todd at the Key West Theater, you can catch Joal Rush at the Smokin’ Tuna, on Tuesday, May 30 at 9 p.m., where he will be performing with Nick Norman and Chris Thomas.

“S

o many margaritas, so little time,” said bartender Elaina Bracht shaking up the namesake drink at Margaritaville on Duval Street. “I probably make about a couple hundred every day.”

The list is long when it comes to margarita recipes at Margaritaville, but Bracht says her personal favorite is the “Perfect Margarita.” Made with house brand gold and silver tequila, she said the selling point is the fresh squeezed lime juice rather than sour mix. “It is really delicious,” she said.

And, you can’t have a margarita at Margaritaville without a Cheeseburger in Paradise, “just like the song,” she said.

“It’s definitely the most ordered thing, for sure.”

She loves working there because her co-workers are friends and the customers who frequent the restaurant and bar are usually lighthearted and happy while on vacation.

Bracht grew up listening to Jimmy Buffett. “My parents are parrotheads, so I know every song by heart,” she said.

THE RUNNER

Peterley Louis says his favorite high school memory will be running with some of the most talented young people in South Florida.

“Running track and cross country helped shape me into the man I am today,” he said. “It allowed me to push myself to my limits and made me a better person in the classroom and the community.”

With records in the 4x1600 relay, distance medley relays and the 1600 sprint medley relay, he says he hopes to continue running after high school, but isn’t sure what his coach has in store for him. “I’ll be building up my mileage and taking my gift to St. Thomas University,” he said. “Go Wildcats!”

He’s a numbers man. Saying math is his strong suit off the field, he will be looking for an accounting degree post high school. His advice for underclassmen: Remain humble and stay dedicated.

Respect everyone no matter what their position is, whether it is higher or lower than yours.

ENTREPRENUER

“Working hard will pay off in the future,” said Chase Fariss, who will be attending University of Florida pursuing a degree in business and entrepreneurship. His favorite high school memories included being a part of the Television Production National Team. The team traveled around the country including Atlanta, Orlando, Las Vegas, and New York City.

Although Luis Anthony Tuya will be attending Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, his hopes are set high for pursuing a career in the United States Navy as an officer. He is looking for a bachelor’s degree in marketing or computer science, and also his auto mechanic certificate.

“My favorite activity while in high school was to be a part of NSROTC,” he said. “It helps you make great friends with people that will last long after high school is over.”

He will be the first one in his family to join the military. He said, “It will basically be a jump start in life,” he said.

His advice for underclassmen: Follow your heart.

“I produced a short film called ‘Reconcile’ with Tyler Nitti and also produced a video for the experimental category called ‘Sanctuary’ with Julien Ohayon and Derrin Thompson,” he said.

“Both played at the AMC movie theater in Times Square for the All American High School Film Festival.”

His advice for underclassmen: There is no template for a college application. Take the classes that you think will benefit you most and participate in the activities you will have the most fun in.

THE BUILDER

Being accepted into Savannah College of Art and Design was something Firdavs Yuldashev has dreamed of because he has always been fascinated with art. Wanting to pursue a degree in architecture, his background at Key West High School helped him practice his skills and plan ahead for his future.

“When I was a little kid, my mother used to buy me construction kit toys for my birthday that I used to build little houses from,” he said. “Besides that, I love designing and art, and architecture is just a functional art.”

What he will miss most: filming and creating animations in his Television Production class. His advice to underclassmen: Focus on your passion and keep challenging yourself.

DJ Barrios has known since his whole life what he wanted to be when he grew up – a fisherman. After graduation, he will be pursuing his dreams as a charter and commercial fisherman in Key West.

“I am most looking forward to starting my own business and being my own boss,” he said.

To start, the born-and-raised Conch will be fishing on the Triple Time learning with his grandfather who has 60 years of Keys fishing under his belt. His focus will be on learning the business while catching tuna and big dolphin (a.k.a., mahi-mahi).

His advice to underclassmen: Stay focused; don’t get sucked into bad decisions; cherish all the moments.

DOUBLE GRADUATE

When Brittany Mira accepts her high school diploma, she will be adding it to her Associate of Arts degree she received from Florida Keys Community College. Through dual enrollment, the 17-year-old has already finished half of her college degree.

Heading off to Florida Atlantic University, she is looking forward to learning more languages. “I have loved languages since I was young and started learning Japanese in sixth grade,” she said. Florida Atlantic is only one of two Florida universities that offers a bachelor’s in linguistics.

The most difficult part of the last four years, she said, was scheduling her high school and college schedules. “There were several classes I didn’t get to take because I couldn’t get them to line up correctly,” she said.

After her bachelor’s, she looks forward to receiving a Ph.D. in linguistics and to research and study dying languages.

Heading off to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Raylyn Star Faatuai wants to pursue a career in the field of communications and information or aircraft maintenance. She also has interest in behavioral sciences and applied mathematics.

While at KWHS, her favorite thing was being a part of the Conchettes.

She says she will miss the salt air and being within walking distance of the beach. “There is nothing like a good Kim’s Kuban café con leche and dates with my parents,” she said.

Her advice to underclassmen: Do NOT get senioritis. Venture out and explore and focus on you and the tasks at hand. “The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday,” she said.

Mackenzie Cohen is heading off to Florida State University to study physical therapy, she thinks. Sports were her passion in high school, playing soccer, softball and cheerleading, which led her to want a career in physical therapy. She will miss most the Conch Pride throughout the school and Key West but is looking forward to meeting new people at college.

“We beat Gulliver,” she said. “We haven’t done that in eight years!”

She just received an offer from another Florida college for softball, so now she has some important decisions to make. “I have one more option to consider now,” she said.

Her advice to underclassmen: To be as involved as you can now – go outside your comfort zone and try new things.

THE GIVER

Angena Pierre is staying close by and attending Florida Keys Community College to study nursing. “It’s a great program right here in my backyard,” she said. She spent her high school years volunteering for Keys to Be the Change and is looking forward to helping those in need as a nurse.

Her advice for underclassmen: Always give your best in everything.

“It’s a little nerve wrecking to be leaving my classmates I’ve known since pre-K,” said Tristin Blackwell, who is heading off to University of Florida to study accounting. Her graduating GPA stands at a weighted 4.566 and unweighted a perfect 4.0.

As a part of the Conchettes, she said it helped her become a more confident person and a better leader.

“My favorite high school memory was performing at my first football game,” she said. “I had adrenaline and anxiety, but it ended up going perfectly.”

She said, “I am going to miss being around the water and going out on the boat, but am looking forward to the myriad of activities and clubs that will be available to me in college.”

Her advice to underclassmen: Find out what you are interested in and, if you like it, stick with it.

Who has been your biggest inspiration at Key West High School and why?

My biggest inspiration at Key West High School has been Gavin Townsend. She is our college advisor and helped me get accepted to my dream college.

What are your plans after high school?

I plan on attending Florida State University and majoring in musical theater.

Absolutely not. The Keys are far too small and too far away from everything. I plan on living in New York and living a busy life. I love to meet new people and unfortunately that is rare here.

I believe the biggest challenge facing the Keys is homelessness. To meet this challenge, small meals should be prepared to give out throughout the day as well as provision of clean clothing. Another problem is the tourists. Some ruin our ecosystems and pollute our town.

hat goes 18 knots and is 80 proof? A Rumrunner. Paul Menta — a local fisherman, chef and kitesurfer, can cross it off his bucket list.

Owner of the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, Menta just sailed the 90 miles to Cuba on the Schooner Wolf and brought the first bottle of Key West rum to Cuba, ever.

“When I decided to do a distillery, I have always wanted to see the embargo lifted and be the first rumrunner,” said Menta. Menta just returned this past Monday from sailing to Cuba with Captain Finbar after spending a week cruising around the countryside in an old Chevy and sharing his rum with Cuban people.

“You have to have a lot of confidence in your product to show up in Cuba with your own rum,” Menta said, laughing. “But I loved chemistry as a kid and I knew I could make something good.” And the Cubans loved it too, immediately putting it to good use in an authentic mojito.

They also invited Menta to a private Basilica concert and poet Orlando LaGuardia wrote a proclamation declaring him the first official Key West rumrunner.

“It was my dream to do this.”

n a stilted Big Pine Key house, disabled Army veteran Donald Pereau’s windows needed some help. “It’s tough not knowing when storms are coming and having to worry about how the windows will get shuttered and un-shuttered,” he said.

That’s when Team Depot, the Marathon Home Depot store volunteers, stepped up to help Pereau. With grants for wounded veterans through Home Depot, the team secured $16,000 to help replace the old windows with hurricane impact windows in the home.

They also had enough left over to paint the interior of the house with a fresh coat of paint.

“From the injuries I sustained while enlisted, it’s a blessing for them to come out here and help me out,” said Pereau, who served from 1997 to 2001 and then again from 2004 to 2016 before receiving a medical discharge.

“Not having to worry about storms coming will be a huge help.”

The windows in his home hadn’t been replaced since it was originally built, so in addition to not having to worry about shutters anymore, he is also excited about the energy costs that will come from the upgrade.

Team Depot does about $20 million a year for veterans around the country. The local team has done everything from installing ramps to donating grills for the American Legion.

“We try to do one big project a quarter,” said Team Depot volunteer Scott Zimmerman.

• Tell others your own memories of the fallen on Memorial Day. I lost several friends in Iraq and through my years of military service. But I tell people how they lived, the type of people that they were, and how their friendship still benefits me today. One friend, was an amazing shot with a pistol, rifle, or a machine gun. When I joined my Special Forces team, I was the worst shot on the whole team.

He taught me, painstakingly, how to shoot at an expert level over several months with both U.S. and foreign weapons. To this day, his lesson in the importance of being an expert in your profession and teaching others how to be an expert too was an invaluable

personal and professional lesson for me. These are the stories that I want others to remember about my fallen friends. I don’t want how they died to be remembered. I want their smiles, their funny stories, and the lessons and leadership that they enacted daily to me the memories for others.

• Give donations, not charity, to the families of the fallen. Remembering the spouses and the children of the fallen is especially important on Memorial Day and throughout the year. The key phrase is to find ways to support, to mentor, and to employ spouses and children of the fallen.

Unmindful charity is easy, but there are other ways to help in a meaningful manner. Tutoring a child, supporting a college fund, helping a fallen spouse network and continue a career are all great ways to support the families of the fallen.

• Make Memorial Day personal by creating traditions that truly recognize and appreciate the fallen.

Remembering those that fell in battle as good, kind, funny, and amazing people creates a deep sense of loss, but a powerful, and unfading appreciation of fallen soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen — not as numbers — but as people. Helping surviving family members is a moving step in appreciation to ensure that the families’ loss is remembered and appreciated so they can move on with their lives.

Do all you can to remember at a personal level this Memorial Day.

SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS Theatre XP announces schedule

K

ey West’s eclectic TheatreXP has announced its program for the annual Key West Summer Stage, set to run Wednesdays through Sundays, July 5-29 in Key West. The schedule includes two cutting edge, award-winning plays, two new play readings, and will feature an intriguing new theatrical event called “Twice Told Tales.”

“This will be our seventh season for Summer Stage,” said TheatreXP founder and artistic director Bob Bowersox, who with partner, filmmaker Quincy Perkins, created Summer Stage in 2011. “We wanted to remain true to our reputation for power and edge on the stage.”

Joining TheatreXP this Summer Stage will be the Red Barn Theatre, The Studios of Key West, the Key West Theater, and Fringe Theater Key West.

Opening this year on the Red Barn Stage will be TheatreXP’s production of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.”

The story – in its book, play, or movie form – is one of the most acclaimed in history. The Summer Stage version will be directed by Steppenwolf, Goodman, and Roundabout Theater veteran Patrick New, and star Ross Pipkin as Randall P. McMurphy and Melody G. Moore as Nurse Ratched, supported by

“One special part of this show will be the price,” said Bowersox. “In 1958, when the play opened on Broadway, an orchestra seat was only $5. Thanks to the generosity of our underwriters, we will be able to offer all our reserved seating for all performances of “Cuckoo’s Nest” for the 1958 price of only $5.”

The second mainstage show will be presented by Fringe Theater. Sarah Rule’s romantic and touching “Dear Elizabeth” will also be performed on the Red Barn stage. Directed by Rebecca Tomlinson, the play uses the letters between poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell to chronicle their careers, poetry and love as it blossoms, falters, and renews over 30 years.

In between these stellar plays, will be three other theatrical events.

• On Monday, July 10 at 7 p.m., TheatreXP will present the reading of “Heartbeat,” a brand new original play

by Georgia Searle Morris.

• On Monday, July 17 at 7 p.m., the Key West Theater will present a reading of another new original play, “Penang” by James L. Larocca.

• The final Summer Stage event is the brand new “Twice Told Tales”, which will be presented by TheatreXP and The Studios of Key West on Monday, July 24 at 8 pm. The evening centers on monologues, with five top directors each directing two actors apiece on the same monologue, but in completely different ways.

he newly-renovated permanent exhibit — “Overseas to the Keys: Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway” — will debut with a special opening event Friday, May 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Custom House Museum in Key West. The

exhibit celebrates an important part of Florida Keys history and the incredible engineering feat that joined mainland Florida to Key West.

With these experiences driving him, Flagler embarked on a second career in his fifties as a hotel developer and railroad builder with the intention of bringing wealthy northerners to a region of the country he had grown to love. He spent $50 million of his own money to complete his dream. While a portion of railroad tracks in the Florida Keys were wiped out by the most intense hurricane to ever strike the United States, thanks to Flagler’s solid engineering, several of the bridges were repurposed for the present-day Overseas Highway.

Margaritaville opens doors for benefit concert

oward Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band played this past weekend to raise money for the Southernmost Boys and Girls Club at the annual “One Particular Harbour” concert. The Margaritaville Resorts shuts down the restaurant for the fundraiser and provides all the food and beverages for the event. ‘RUN, FORREST, RUN’ 100 miles of Keys asphalt

E

ighteen of my miles later, the girls in my van had seen more of me than anyone ever should. Starting before dawn and finishing after the midnight hour, there is something about running 100 miles with six friends that is oddly appealing for some unknown reason.

Here’s some pics of local runners and some of the faces that got us through 100 miles during this past weekend’s Keys 100 race from Key Largo to Key West.

2. This is Forrest. We actually don’t know his real name, but we piggy backed his solo 100 miles the whole time and affectionately cheered him on the entire run. We also found another Forrest-type, this one rocking tie-dye.

3. Five of the most phenomenal women I know at the end of the 7 Mile Bridge. Leslie Valant, left, 7 Mile Bridge runner Liz Morin, Tracy McDaniel, me, Jeanine Christiansen, and our fearless leader Jessika Rady. We finished in 19 hours, 19 minutes — well under our goal of 20 hours!

4. These two ladies, Danni Becker and Allison Delashmit, tailgated the Lily Bow Channel Bridge all day and into the night cheering on the runners and welcoming them by blowing a conch shell.

5. Team BAM! Bad Ass Moms out of Key West hang with the band Sister Hazel at the after party. The band also ran the race and then played a free concert for all the runners. (P.S., Team BAM! stayed and cheered us through the finish line and we love them for it!)

6. Sister Mary Beth brings smiles to many runner’s faces. This was her third attempt at a solo 100 miler IN FULL HABIT. She made it through Marathon but not to the finish line, sadly.

The Florida Keys Guitar Festival will produce a “Guitar Summit,” bringing together David Feder, Mateo and Rolando Rojas the weekend of June 2-4, with performances in Tavernier, Marathon and Key West.
