Talk about daring. “Well, it was a black dress with a sheer black jacket over it,” said Elizabeth Hall of Marathon Aviation Associates. “And then we hemmed it into a mini skirt.” Gasp! Hall graduated high school in Winterhaven, Florida.

Gina Saller-Paskiewicz attended Marathon High School prom with her now-husband James in 1996. “It was a floor-length, red satin dress,” she said, adding that her nowhusband wore the matching vest and tie. “I had picked something else out, but then I saw that dress.” Good choice, Gina.

Jeanette Medero (nee Maresma) graduated in 2001 from a Catholic high school in Boca Raton. “It was black and very low cut. As soon as I came into the room, two Fathers told me to get a safety pin. I didn’t.” She’s a good girl now (ahem)!

“I still have the dress!” said Michelle Franck. “It was a shimmery purple when all my friends wore pink because … it was the ’80s.” She went on to describe spaghetti straps, ruffles at the bodice and ruffles at the hem — all with the ring of satisfaction of a dress well loved and well worn.

Literally. “It was a coral, peachy color with big sleeves that stuck up,” she said.

It was 1985, so the GLOVES matched the dress. Of course there were gloves.

1-2-3 County fortifies vacation rental enforcement SARA MATTHIS

ne, file a notice with a state agency to report real estate agents who represent vacation rental law scofflaws. Two, purchase software to identify and prosecute scofflaws. Three, hire two staffers to handle the job.

That’s the action the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners took Wednesday at its monthly meeting in Key West.

Not without some back-and-forth among commissioners, though, about cost and labor.

All the commissioners were in agreement that real estate agents who have represented property owners found guilty of violating vacation rental law should have their names forwarded to the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

According to Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley, the county has already scheduled meetings with Realtor associations to let them know of the coming change.

In the second move, the county agreed to spend $97,238 for one year of software to help identify illegal vacation rentals.

Commissioner Danny Kolhage questioned the cost.

“You sit one person down in front of a computer and you can find all the illegal vacation rental advertisements that you want,” he said.

Hurley said this particular software, Host Compliance, not only uses government data that outlines the specific regions to search, but also provides details needed for prosecution. A test search revealed more than 2,500 possible violators, she said. Many online listings don’t provide an actual address until money has changed hands, nor do they provide information about how long a visitor stayed.

“I do recognize this is a big expense. But, conservatively, we could recoup $770,000 in fines from violators in one year,” she said, adding that staff sat through more than one presentation with the vendor and interviewed other vendors.

“Knowing about an illegal vacation rental and proving it in front of a special magistrate are two separate things,” said Commissioner David Rice.

Host Compliance lists about 60 city and county clients on its website ranging from nearby City of Fort Lauderdale to Napa, California.

Kolhage was the lone dissenter on the decision to purchase the software.

“Not because I don’t want to prosecute illegal transient rentals, because I do.

But this should have been bid; it’s too costly and that’s why I don’t support it.”

The final part of the plan was to hire two new full-time staffers to keep

up with the workload the county anticipates will be generated by the software. With benefits, the two positions would cost the county $140,000.

At the moment, the county employs one staffer tasked with this duty.

Hurley said she was only able to tackle 93 cases. Commissioner Heather Carruthers questioned why they shouldn’t be contract employees, or why the county shouldn’t only hire one additional employee.

Kolhage and Carruthers dissented and the measure passed.

“For the record, only the Democrats were interested in saving money,” said Carruthers, eliciting a laugh from the rest of the board and the public.

The two are the only Democrats on the board.

To handle the growing number of vacation rental law violators, Monroe County “rented” a software license for one year. At a cost of $97,238, Host Compliance will help the county identify vacation rentals advertised online and provide the evidence needed to prosecute. Host Compliance has about 60 counties and municipalities listed as clients on its website.

he Florida Keys Area Health Education Center was awarded $20,000 at the Florida Blue Foundation’s Sapphire Award ceremony recognizing the impact the school health center program has had on providing no-cost primary care services to the students of Monroe County,

The health centers are located at seven school sites throughout Monroe County. These sites are open a halfhour before school to a half-hour after school.

“This program has provided primary care for our county’s most medically vulnerable children, taking away all barriers to care and creating easily accessible sites” said Michael Cunningham, CEO of AHEC. The Florida Blue Foundation also has awarded Keys AHEC a $270,000 grant over three years to support the continuing efforts of providing quality health care in Monroe County.

Being the youngest of four, Kelley Struyf was used to being known as so-and-so’s little sister.

That even followed her to college at Florida International University, where she is finishing up her bachelor’s in special education. The hard baller and 2011 Marathon High School grad is known as a badass on the softball field and also when it comes to lifting some serious weight at the gym.

“I love the Pop’s tournament,” she said. “I’ve played in it every year but the first year – only

because I was four days away from my due date.”

In addition to studying, she is a full-time mom to Aden and works part-time as a sales associate for a local rental car agency.

Kelley says she’s pretty sure she’s related to at least 40 percent of Marathon, and her mom, Debbie, has a room dedicated to Struyf athletic accomplishments over the years.

“I love Marathon,” she said. “Home is where you make it, but this is always home. From the

ow did you become involved with Pops tournament? I was asked to help keep score because I was the size of a beluga whale. I grew up stopping into Pop’s house for candy on Halloween and he was a huge supporter of Marathon High School athletics. I am thankful for that.

Favorite guilty pleasure? Chocolate and flirting with 70-plus-yearold men.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy? My mom’s house we grew up in BTA, Behind The Airport, and a new motor for that darn Dusky.

Favorite memory from Marathon High School? Playing boys like I play ball. Just kidding; well, not really. It has to be hitting two home runs on Key West and one of them being a walk-off.

Tell us about hitting home runs … and are you one of the only girls who participates in the home run derby? I was the ONLY girl to hit in the derby this year. At least I can say I didn’t have a goose egg — a big ZERO hits — like the number of hits “Shake” had this year.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened slinging cars at Marathon airport? I once had a woman accuse me of stealing her Costas when I had a pair of $200 Ray Bans on my head. I also had a man furiously yelling at a representative on the phone, but calmly turned to me and thanked me for my time.

You’ve been killing it on the weight lifting – what’s your max weight for (insert whatever the heck thing is that you lift…)?

It’s called Olympic Weightlifting — snatch and clean, and jerk, currently 23rd in the state for my weight class at 75 kilos. The American Open is in July, but we’re also going on a cruise beforehand and we all know those Bahama Mamas are just calling this momma’s name.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner…who walks in and sits next to you? Rapper Trick Daddy. Have you seen his Instagram? He needs to cook me dinner for sure.

BRIEFLY Fiscal budget discussed at meeting The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners has begun holding public meetings and hearings regarding the Fiscal Year 2018 budget.

The remaining public budget schedule includes: July 25 at 10 a.m. at Harvey Government Center in Key West. This special meeting is for discussion of the budget and capital improvement plan and the announcement of the proposed millage rate.

ALLAN D. AKA ‘BUTCH’ HOEPER October 11, 1956 – April 21, 2017 Butch departed this Earth and oceans that he loved so much April 21, 2017.

He came to the Florida Keys in the ’80s and made the Conch Key area his home. He became a tropical fish collector and never had any regrets. There was not a species he didn’t swim with — big or small. He also enjoyed gardening and grew beautiful orchids and always had a beautiful garden.

He will be sadly missed by many friends. He always had a good pirate story starting with, “Men, men, men …”

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Lori of 22 years; and sisters Helen (Ron) of Minnesota and Janet (Gary) of Utah.

He was predeceased by his parents Harland and Ruby Hoeper.

CARMELLA KORNETTI July 22, 1939 - May 7, 2017 We lost a wife, mother, sister, family and friend, to some of the most precious people on this Earth, on May 7, 2017. Carmella was loved and adored by her whole community.

Born Carmella Catherine Pezzullo on July 22, 1939, one of 13 children, to parents Antoinette and Vincent Pezzullo of New York City, Carmella obtained her nursing degree from Helene Fuld College of Nursing, Trenton, New Jersey in 1960.

She married John “Jack” Kornetti on Nov. 10, 1962. She and Jack met several years prior on a blind date that was arranged by her nursing school roommate. Jack, already a resident of Marathon, Florida, employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company, was one of several family members who lived and owned businesses in this small island town.

Carmella was one of the first registered nurses working general duty and emergency services at Fisherman’s Community Hospital. Her employment there continued intermittently from 1963 through 1978, at which time she became a public health nurse for the Florida Department of Health. In a small clinic, Carmella managed many public health programs, her favorites being maternal health and Healthy Start. Carmella was instrumental in the birth of many people living in Marathon today. She was also active in health education at Stanley Switlik Elementary and Marathon High School. Her employment with the department spanned over 18 years.

Carmella is remembered as a compassionate nurse, loving wife, adoring mother and all-around genuine human being. She always put the care of children and those who were sick and injured first. Carmella had frequent knocks at her door at all hours of the day or night from anyone who needed medical attention. She was well known for her enduring, loving kindness for her family, friends and the patients she served.

She and Jack raised four children, all born and raised in Marathon and graduates of Marathon High School. The family was looking forward to celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary this year.

Carmella is survived by her husband, Jack Kornetti; daughters Veronica Lowry and her husband Steve and Stephanie Irvin and her husband Brett; and sons John Kornetti and Paul Kornetti and his wife Aimee; 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Living members of her immediate family are: sisters Carrie DeMartino, Anne Denny, Victoria Tate, Giulietta Passarelli, brother Vincent Pezzullo and a plethora of cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Carmella always believed in putting family first. She always had a warm meal or hot cup of tea waiting for you. She welcomed everyone to her home. Her warm smile, hugs and kisses, homemade cards, cookies and Kahlua will greatly be missed.

The family requests that in lieu of gifts or flowers, to please make a memorial donation in her name to her favorite charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Masses have been arranged in her honor by the Joseph-Becker Family at San Pablo Church on the following dates/times: 5/29, 6/2, 6/15, 7/5, 7/22 at 8 a.m.; 7/16, 7/30, 8/6, 8/13 at 11 a.m.; and 7/29 at 5 p.m.

OPEN SKIES Locals fly to Cuba to talk about opening Keys-Cuba connection for sport aviators SARA MATTHIS

arlier this month, five private airplanes carrying 10 passengers took off from Florida Keys Marathon International Airport to fly to Varadero, Cuba. Taking into account the wide variety of aircraft capable of different speeds, they staggered the take-offs so that all could land about the same time less than an hour later.

They were met by 30 members of the Cuban Aviation Club.

None of whom owns a plane.

“Of course they wanted to see the planes from the U.S.,” said Gabe Ferrer. “And they were particularly amazed by the appearance of the Rutan experimental aircraft.”

Ferrer, an experimental-aircraft enthusiast, organized the trip.

Also along for the ride — Tom and Mary Ellen Operchal, Al and Susan Simmons, Dave and Sarah Hill, Chuck and Chrissie Gilbert, Ferrer and a gent named Ryszard “Richard” Zadow, who flew his special Rutan to the island nation. It’s a kit plane with a unique design that resembles a space ship more than a small plane.

“That plane does a little curtsy when it lands, and the nose dips.

The ramp marshall at the airport … well, his eyes got really wide,” said Ferrer.

The American group met with the Cuban Aviation Club several times, including the granddaughter of a Cuban aviator during the Bay of Pigs, and also a man who designs and builds gliders out of wood and glue and whatever else can be found by scouring the island.

“They had lots of questions about experimental aircraft,” said Tom Operchal. He said the experimental aircraft is attractive to the Cubans because the kits are cheaper than commercially produced planes, and parts and maintenance are not as heavily regulated.

The group also met with the Institute for Cuban Civil Aviation.

Their goal there, Ferrer said, was to convince authorities to allow private pilots with visual flight credentials, instead of the higher standard of “instrument rated,” to

fly to Cuba. “I think I’ve almost changed (their) mind,” Ferrer said, adding that the issue will have to go up the chain of command before there is change.

More importantly, that meeting became a less scripted conversation — pilot to pilot.

“We had Sadow on one side — a guy who flew for the U.S. Navy and an experienced air carrier pilot — and a Cuban who flew MiGs for the Soviets in Angola,” said Tom Operchal.

“They had similar stories and just opened up. It was a conversation,” said Mary Ellen Operchal.

The group spent five days in Cuba, speaking about the possibilities of sport recreation with as many Cubans as would listen. Ferrer said he envisions the Marathon airport as the “gateway” of recreational aviation to Cuba. He also shared plans for a Sun ‘n’ Fun-style airshow, similar to the annual event in Lakeland that attracts 5,000 planes and more pilots. He said it would be quite possible to stage a similar show at Varadero’s older airport, Kawama, in 2018.

Ferrer is a naturalized American, Cuban born. He hopes to build bridges between the United States and Cuba via a shared passion for airplanes and flying.

“We need to look to the future,” he said. “The sins of the fathers do not belong to their sons.”

THIS WEEKEND Young Eagles Day, sponsored by the Southernmost Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, is set for Saturday, May 20 at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport. The flights are free for children ages 8 to 17, but a parent or guardian must sign the flight permission form during registration at the EAA Museum next to the airport.

Annual tourney raises money for Habitat

Lower Keys Medical Center hosts open forum

Dubbed the Mother’s Day Tournament, it is the charity’s largest fundraiser of the year. “We had about 100 anglers participate,” said director Christine Todd-Young, “and we raised $55,000 over the course of the weekend.” Todd-Young said all the money will go toward the build of four homes on 73rd Street.

The Florida Keys Guitar Festival will produce a “Guitar Summit,” bringing together David Feder, Mateo and Rolando Rojas the weekend of June 2-4, with performances in Tavernier, Marathon and Key West.

“Our theme this year – A Fusion of Master Guitarists – accurately describes what is in store for concert attendees,“ said Mateo, the founder of the Florida Keys Guitar Festival Summit series. “Like great individual vocalists who sing together for the first time to create new harmonies, our guitarists will reward the listeners with engaging new sounds from their established styles.”

The new spring 2017 exhibit, called Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between, is a retrospective dedicated to 74-year-old Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo. In 1969, she founded the avant-garde modernism label Comme des Garcons – French for “like some boys.” For more than 40 years, the brand has attracted a global following and her designs have inspired other creators, artists and designers alike.

While in New York this past week, I visited this new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, open through September 4. The exhibit features 140 womenswear ensembles dating from the 1980s to her most recent designs.

bo challenged the conventional notions of beauty and fashion. Her designs – conversely feminine and masculine, highly eccentric, and radically chic – create the perfect blend of art and fashion. It’s easy to understand why she is known as one of fashion’s most revered creative visionaries.

Each gallery within the exhibit illustrates the “in-betweenness” or the space between boundaries of Rei Kawakubo’s designs, exploring themes including: absence/presence, design/ not design, fashion/antifashion, model/multiple, then/now, high/low, self/ other, object/subject and clothes/not clothes. The design/not design gallery explores Kawakubo’s intuitive approach to garment making. Having received no formal fashion training, Kawakubo’s creative process, experimental techniques and method of construction culminate in original art-as-fashion creations.

Some of my favorite examples from the exhibit were from Kawakubo’s “Motorbike Ballerina” collection from 2005. These ensembles combined leather jackets and tutus which Kawakubo described as “Harley-Davidson loves Margot Fonteyn” in reference to the American motorcycle manufacturer and the British ballerina.

The ensembles are meant to blend the “high” culture of ballet with the “low” subculture of bikers.

Similarly, her collection from spring/summer in 1997, “Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body” was a series of body-con dresses stuffed with padded lumps that many fashion critics compared to tumors. The silhouette was not popular at the time but the designs were about her vision for the future of female silhouettes.

If you equate fashion to wearability, then Rei Kawakubo’s designs are not fashion. As she says, “When I hear ‘where could you wear that?’ or ‘it’s not very wearable,’ or ‘who would wear that?’ to me it’s just a sign that someone missed the point.” But if you understand that fashion is art, then Rei Kawakubo is the master artist.

Fashion has no limits. Fashion is over the top. Fashion is provocative.

Fashion is art. And in this case, fashion is truly in the eye of the beholder.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT Netflix ‘13 Reasons Why’

B

efore she committed suicide, high schooler Hannah Baker recorded 13 reasons why she chose to take her life. This is the premise to Netflix’s popular show “13 Reasons Why,” currently sweeping the nation, forcing a wide-ranging discussion about teenage suicide from media outlets to the dinner table. Granted, there are many flaws with the show — face it, it’s Hollywood — but inciting kids, parents and teachers to talk about teenage suicide can’t be HAYS all bad. The show brutally asks the underlying question: BLINCKMANN How open are we to the conversation?

The show’s success is in the magnification of teenagers’ heightened sense of loneliness, revenge, technology, sexuality, vulnerability and guilt. And lastly, jarringly, it prosecutes the adults who fail these kids. So it begs the question, how deeply are kids identifying with this show?

And the answer is simply to ask them.

Critics have called the show dangerous and detrimental, fearing kids will copycat the premise — choosing suicide as an option when otherwise they may not. Also, the show does not address mental illness as a factor in suicide.

But some have hailed it for creating a platform for issues such as slut shaming, cyber-bullying and sexual assault.

For instance, has a snapchat photo circulated humiliating your kid? Does your kid feel “friendless?” And the extreme: has your kid been sexually assaulted? Are kids seeking revenge on other kids? Hollywood aside, these are valuable questions in today’s world.

The main character, Clay (the guilty good guy), asks, “What if we knew what we did wrong?” which pulls at the heart strings of every viewer, regardless of the show’s believability. With any suicide or traumatic event, there is an inevitable wake of “what ifs”. Teenage kids are just learning about cause and effect and they are going to screw up. Hollywood capitalizing on this is not new.

Emotional soundtrack and arduous plot aside, the show is, if anything, a catalyst to talk about not just suicide but a teenager’s life in general. The nationwide conversation has begun and viewers don’t necessarily need 13 reasons to participate in it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third-leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 14 and the second among people ages 15 to 34. And in 2013, 17 percent of students in grades nine through 12 seriously considered attempting suicide, as reported by the New York Times.

huck Licis moved to the Keys with an extensive background in rural education. In his third year as Take Stock in Children program coordinator, and as a success coach at Key West High School before that, he said the most important thing is for the students to have an opportunity to earn a degree.

To qualify, students must have a “C” or above grade point average and a financial need. In the program they are matched with a mentor who meets with them weekly, and when they finish high school, they receive a “two by two” scholarship, good for two years at a community college and two years at a four-year Florida institution.

Some $650,000 in scholarships has been set aside for the 36 students expected to enter the program next year in Monroe County. Should a student decide not to use the scholarship, or fails to maintain the standards, the educational opportunity rolls over to another student.

The funding comes from a matching program with the state, which targets at-risk students, and the rest is raised through Monroe County Education Foundation.

“When they complete the program, students are far more likely to go to college than their peers nationwide in the same income bracket,” said Licis.

Monroe County’s program started with the graduating class in 2001 – the statewide program started six years earlier – and Monroe County has graduated more than 600 students since then.

As a premier gold standard program in the state, the program is evaluated on certain key factors, which it exceeds in every category, from

mentors to the financial aspect.

There are only 15 “gold standard” programs in Flroida.

This year, 54 Monroe County students taking part in the program will finish high school.

“I hope that many of them will come back to this community to open businesses or work with local companies,” Licis said, though he doesn’t know the percentage of graduates who actually return. “Anecdotally there are a handful who do come back, but we have found that a lot of kids down here want to live in a bigger city and with the affordability of the housing in the Keys, it makes it difficult for them to return.”

He added that it doesn’t matter where the students end up after they graduate. Take Stock in Children helps students attain their dream of a college education no matter where it may take them. “Most children are born into their situations; we want to give them an opportunity to get themselves out of that cycle,” he said.

hristina Belotti, 34, graduated with the first class of Take Stock In Children scholars.

There were only six in Monroe County, two at Marathon High School. Today, her students at Marathon Middle School call her “Doctor Belotti” and she’s finishing up her 10th year of teaching.

“In the first year, we had mentors just as they do now,” said Belotti. “But the program was very bare-bones; they were just figuring it out. The international living opportunities and things like dorm scholarships evolved over time.”

The lack of dorm funding in TSIC’s beginning years led Belotti down a different path. She received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees without leaving the Keys.

“I started out at Florida Keys Community College, and then I found the ‘2+2’ program from Barry University, taught at the FKCC campus,” she said.

Belotti’s involvement in the program pre-dated the TSIC dorm scholarships.

“I was set to go to college, but when I started looking at dorm fees …

The newer TSIC dorm scholarships are so important,” she said Belotti received her degree in elementary education and then sought out advanced degrees from Walden University in secondary literacy and teacher leadership.

“It’s real. My mom shows my dissertation to everyone who walks in the office,” said Belotti, laughing.

Not only do Christina and Tina Belotti work alongside one another, Christina also teaches alongside her former TSIC mentor, library specialist Cathy Lancaster.

Belotti credits TSIC with helping her focus. By ninth grade, she was diligent about maintaining a high grade point average. She said she was fortunate to have the support at home, “but support of a mentor is another piece in keeping it together during high school so you can get to college.”

As a teacher at Marathon Middle School, and a former TSIC scholarship recipient, she is in a unique position to advocate for the program that has done so much for her. In fact, she is the keynote speaker at the upcoming TSIC graduation ceremony.

On May 11, schools throughout Monroe County assembled middle school students at the Ron Levy Aquatic Center in Islamorada to race student-built underwater robots.

As part of Monroe County School District’s goal of incorporating more STEM projects into the curriculum, the district began participating in the nationwide Sea Perch program. Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, the project puts science, mathematics, engineering, and technology at the forefront.

Students from Key Largo School, Plantation Key School, Treasure Village Montessori, Marathon Middle School, Sugarloaf School, and Horace O’Bryant Middle School participated by assembling teams to build low-cost Remotely Operated Vehicles.

“The point of a project like this is to get students to work beyond the four walls of a classroom,” said Courtney Oliver, K-12 science coordinator for the school district. “They don’t often get exposed to current science standards. This is essentially an enrichment project, but also a chance to come together and work collaboratively.”

“This form of project-based learning has every component of STEM, and at the end of the day they have something to show for it other than a test grade,” said Oliver of the sea perch curriculum. “Students who have gone through the project sometimes come back and mentor those who have trouble.”

The task is simple, kind of: Navigate the ROV through a linear course of submersed hoops to the end. Turn around. Navigate back. The only problem – the ROV is attached by a tetherlike wire that connects to a handheld remote. While one student navigates, supporting team members must slowly let out the wire. Easier said than done.

Marathon Middle School students worked in groups of three to construct their Sea Perch rovers. Jayden Bruland and his teammates Tucker Carlson and Riley McClure had their hands full before and during the competition. The group had worked on their robot for six hours prior to the competition, and after laboring extensively on the vessel decided to name it after Bruland’s uncle, local commercial fisherman and Marathon native, Capt. Justin Bruland.

Team “Capt. Justin” had one main takeaway from the project: It wasn’t easy. Bruland, Carlson and McClure all came to the general consensus that the hardest part was “measuring, cutting, and figuring out the buoyancy of the ROV,” said Bruland.

“It was also a lot harder to drive than what I thought,” added McClure.

School administrators say the feedback from students has been more than positive. In most cases students were surprised to learn they had skills that they had no idea they were going to enjoy. And Oliver says that having students turn something that came in a “million parts” into one functioning robot piece is a task most don’t realize they’re capable of doing until the end.

he poolside tiki at Skipjack Resort’s Boot Key Bar and Grill is inviting on a hot summer day.

Bartender Deb knows that, and is happy to serve up refreshing cocktails poolside for her guests. “I have a few specialty mixes up my sleeves to make the perfect Long Island ice teas and traditional margaritas,” she said.

Deb moved to the Keys in 2015 after finding her dream home in paradise. She recently accepted a management position at Boot Key Bar and Grill, and still loves to jump behind the bar to make yummy drinks and serve some the food the restaurant offers.

“The seared tuna club is great,” she said, looking over the island-fresh fare on the menu. The club is made with pepper-seared yellowfin tuna, Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and is topped with a garlic aioli on multigrain toast.

Her favorite part about working at the restaurant is the atmosphere and management. “It’s a pleasure being here,” she said. “It doesn’t really feel like work when I am here.”

When she isn’t at the resort, she spends her time with her two rescue dogs and is training two other dogs at the moment.

“It’s great when you can come here for season,” she said starting in January, “and want to stay because it feels like home.”

Heartbreakers Celebrate 40 Years

0 years ago, I was a high school sophomore taking my first steps down the path toward my eventual music career.

And a band of transplanted Floridians, rising from the ashes of another band called Mudcrutch, released its eponymous debut album. “Breakdown,” the first single from “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,” started a string of hit songs and great albums, and a tradition of some of the most amazing rock music ever recorded and performed.

So, 40 years later, the Heartbreakers are as good as they ever were, even better if one considers the vast catalog of music they created. They continue to celebrate their 40th anniversary on a tour that will take them into early fall. I got a chance to see the concerts in West Palm Beach and Tampa, and they showed that Petty & Co. are still at the top of their game.

First, a word about the opening act: I think that if someone is opening for the Heartbreakers, that person must be a card-carrying member of the Rock Hall of Fame. This year, Joe Walsh and his band rocked the crowd with a string of songs from James Gang, Eagles, and his solo career. Joe’s band included his long-time drummer/keyboardist Joe Vitale, with whom he wrote and recorded so many hits, from “Rocky Mountain Way” through now. A poignant moment came when Joe and his band did a tribute to his “brother and bandmate” Glenn Frey — a moving version of “Take It To The Limit.”

Then, it was time for a bunch of

guys from Gainesville to take the stage.

Four of the five original Heartbreakers are still with the group: Tom Petty, lead guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench III, and bassist Ron Blair. Scott Thurston added guitar, harmonica, keyboards and backing vocals, as he has since 1990. And Steve Ferrone — the New Guy — has been the Heartbreakers’ drummer for just 24 years.

New on this tour were the harmonies from the Webb Sisters, Hattie and Charlie. Popular in their native U.K., the pair has released several CDs and backed other notables such as Leonard Cohen. Their vocals added very harmonious blends that took songs like “Wildflowers” to new and wonderful places.

Petty strode to the microphone ready to rock, announcing, “We’re bringing you 100 percent natural rock and roll! No artificial sweeteners!

And no corporate sponsors! We are brought to you by you!” The Heartbreakers then kicked off the show with the first song from their first album, “Rockin’ Around (With You).” Before the crowd could catch its collective breath, Petty launched into the chord progression for “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” and the place really went wild. “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” a hit from “Wildflowers,” got the crowd sparking a lot of… interest in the musical proceedings on stage.

Other classics in the set list included “Free Fallin’,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Refugee,” “Learning to Fly,” and “You Got Lucky.” In addition to the two other Wildflowers tracks already mentioned, the band performed “It’s Good to be King,” “Crawling Back to You,” and “You Wreck Me” from that special 1994 album.

In these days of modern technowizardry, it was great to hear real music played by real humans. As Tom counted out the tempo for “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” Mike Campbell totally missed the opening guitar riff, which prompted a crap-eating grin from Ferrone to Mike. And when the band began the encore of “American Girl,” Petty started singing in the wrong place, which inspired even more grins among the band members! Needless to say, they didn’t miss a beat while catching up with Tom. (Incidentally, there were no mistakes like this in the Tampa show.)

Throughout the concerts, the instrumental interplay between Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench was amazing. Many songs were turned into extended jams, and the band took them to different places both nights.

If the rumors of this being the last big tour for the Heartbreakers are true, I’m glad they really made it last all night.
