WHAT’S SOMETHING CRAZY YOUR MOM DID? “My mom met me at the airport in a Saturday Night Live Killer Bee costume,” said Kelly Friend, “She thought it was great, but I was not fazed.”

“My mom is Irish; she’s not that funny,” said Lisa Fitzgerald, “but she is sweet as hell.”

“My mom flew in and surprised me for my Halloween Party,” said Derby Day Jockey Lance Harvey, “She came as the Grim Reaper.” LOL.

“I was selling all my Matchbox cars, so my mother bought them all, gave me the money and let me keep the cars,” said Jimmy Olson. Aww.

“I asked my Mom for a cigarette at a very young age and she didn’t hesitate but gave it to me,” said Clayton Chelley, “Let’s just say, I have never smoked again in my life.” Sometimes mothers do know best!

BETTER CALL MOM Interview with Cara Higgins, first class lawyer and mother HAYS BLINCKMANN

t’s hard not to be charmed. Whether it’s the disarming blue eyes, the more-than-sly sense of humor or the fact she is one bad-ass lawyer, Cara Higgins is the type of mother (and definitely litigator) you want in your corner. Formerly a New Jersey assistant prosecutor, Higgins is now a partner at Horan & Higgins Law Firm where she has notably defended the Hemingway Cats. (Remember when they were targeted by the USDA and it went to 11th Circuit Court of Appeals?)

They were saved, thanks to Higgins, who has never been one to shy away from serving her community. She holds two gubernatorial appointments: board member for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority and board member of the Lower Florida Keys Hospital District. She also sits on the board of the Lower Keys Medical Center and the board/executive committee of the Key West Chamber of Commerce (also a past president and this year honored with The William “Billy” Appelrouth Award). But that’s not all. Aside from the three dogs she has now rescued thanks to Tammy Fox at the SPCA, Higgins is a constant tour de force championing education for Keys’ kids. And at the heart of it all are her children, Thomas and Em, who clearly are two of her greatest accomplishments.

It was Derby day last Saturday and what better way to watch the most expensive, fastest race in America but at the Gardens Hotel, raising money for Key West’s own Mounted Police Department? Officers Wolf and Johnson were on hand with Savannah and Paco for pictures and and a big thank you to the community for all the money raised to keep our trusty steeds on the street.

GREATEST SHOW IN KEY WEST The Flying Carrs Circus Dazzles HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com

T

he circus isn’t coming to town, it’s actually been here all along. Next week for seven performances only, The Flying Carrs Circus will be performing at The Studios of Key West on May 18-20, orchestrated by local wife and mother, Krizia Carr. Carr, married to a Coast Guardsman and mother to three daughters, also just happens to be a third-generation circus performer. Who knew?

Carr’s maternal grandfather was a famous clown named Cocoli in South America back in the ’50s. Her parents immigrated from South America to Sarasota, the circus capital of the world, and raised Carr on the flying trapeze since the age of 5.

“My father became a famous flying trapeze artist and is still the only person in the world who could perform the triple somersault and triple and a half somersault consecutively in a single performance,” said Carr proudly. She performed with her family’s troupe The Flying Caceres in such prestigious circus productions as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, circus festivals in Europe, and Circus Circus casino in Las Vegas. Now settled in Key West, Carr has showcased her acrobatic skills in “The Sexy Side of Star Wars: A Burlesque Parody” and “Peter Pan: A Burlesque Parody,” and with other productions by

Producing and directing “Around the World in 80 Minutes,” Carr is bringing the circus magic home, performing with the Suarezes, another circus family. Elena and Abel Suarez met and fell in love while touring and formed the Circo Suarez and are considered the best quick-change – acts of illusion – artists in the world. Their children Sayana, a contortionist, and Angela, one of the best hula hoop artists in the world at 15 years old, also will be performing. The show is centered on the world’s popular cultures – including a samba carnival, a Hawaiian luau and a Flamenco duel from Spain – and features more than 20 circus acts from around the world, including aerialists, jugglers, acrobats, dancers, clowns and more.

“Performing with Shrine Circuses most of my youth has given me a deep love for working with charities and schools because I feel that it gives everyone an opportunity to escape reality and dream big, even if it’s only for a few hours,” said Carr. The circus is 100 percent animal-free and focuses on the wonder of human dexterity and world class circus entertainment. Let’s all join the circus, at least for a day.

ymnastics, ballet, belly dancing, lyrical, yoga, live music, and hip hop will shine at this year’s first Danceapalooza Showcase taking place on Saturday, May 13 at Sugarloaf school. “It is a chance for children and adults to shine in front of family and friends,” said host and dance instructor Renee Benmbark.

“It will be a fun-filled night for the whole family.”

Benmbark is expecting a special performance from some of the local dance moms, as well as the students from various classes around the Lower Keys.

Jan’s Mobile Gymnastics, Full Circle Wellness, Florida Key’s Hip Hop and Groovy Dance, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Keys Area, and Jessica Tipler’s Mommy and Me Ballet are all set to perform.

“The showcase offers these students a professionally-directed performance that allows them to present to their families and friends the results of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress,” said Benmbark. “The experience helps build self-esteem, self-assurance, and contributes to a sense of confidence.”

The variety show’s doors will open at 5:45 p.m. for a pre-show gala with flowers for sale, raffle tickets, and special kids’ treats.

The show starts at 6:30 p.m. There will also be hot dogs, snacks, and beverages for purchase. Tickets are $10; children under 5 are admitted free. For more information on the event, call 305-509-3115.

The Medical Examiners Commission, a panel of nine professionals, voted Wednesday not to recommend Dr. Thomas Beaver to the governor of Florida to have his contract renewed in Monroe County.

The move came after the commission reviewed surveys expressing unanimous disapproval of the medical examiner’s job performance, and after the county’s top police officer and prosecutor both questioned if the relationship with the medical examiner was beyond repair.

“I got to tell you that these are the worst surveys we have seen,” said Stephen Nelson, M.D., chairman of the board. The surveys were sent out to the medical examiner’s partners, including Monroe County, the sheriff’s office, local police chiefs, the state attorney and local funeral homes. Of the 15 surveyed, 10 cast an “unfavorable” vote while five did not respond. “Not a single favorable survey was issued. … It’s disheartening to me to have you address this board and not once say anything that’s kind of contrite.

What I have heard is ‘They are all liars, all making this stuff up’ and that troubles me.”

Dr. Nelson made the remarks on Wednesday after assertions by Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, Monroe County Assistant Attorney Cynthia Hall, Monroe County Social Services’ Sheryl Graham, and State Attorney Dennis Ward. They ranged from transporting a body to the morgue in the back of an uncovered pickup truck and taking it through a fast food drive-through to “butchering” bodies during autopsy, specifically those of the homeless.

In addition, the commission read other excerpts from the surveys, including Dr. Beaver’s rebuttals, comments from the Allen Beyer Funeral Home and a memo signed by Monroe County sheriff’s deputies. Those charges ranged from a medical examiner employee claiming to be a deputy medical examiner on a witness statement to accusations that Dr. Beaver verbally abused funeral home employees with foul language.

Ramsay characterized the medical examiner’s relationship with law enforcement as “unrepairable.”

Ward said, “I don’t know how we can fix this thing. I just think this may be beyond repair.”

Ramsay called a meeting of stakeholders affected by the medical examiners about a month ago.

Monroe County Assistant Attorney Cynthia Hall said the meeting was properly advertised to comply with Sunshine Law. The result, she said, revealed details of which she was previously unaware.

“I thought that was all behind us,” she said, referring to a 2016 report that questioned Dr. Beaver’s removal of a dead body from a scene in Key Colony Beach in an uncovered pickup truck for transmittal to the morgue. It also questioned commingling of funds from the $686,000 annual medical examiner budget. The medical examiner decides how to spend that amount — to pay his own salary, employee salaries, and operations. The funds come from Monroe County. The audit was triggered by funeral home directors appearing at a Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting to complain that bills were not being paid by the medical examiner for transport of bodies. (Dr. Beaver said Wednesday he objected to funeral homes charging twice for transport of two bodies during a single trip and that he now pays them without argument.)

Hall reiterated the pickup truck complaint, and also said county staff were being forbidden access to the medical examiner’s facility, which is a county-owned building.

She also said family members of the deceased were no longer allowed inside, a departure from previous medical examiner policy, and that Dr. Beaver would no longer provide photographs of the dead for identification in cases where it’s otherwise impossible to establish identity, such as by documents found on the body. Dr. Beaver said all of that was untrue.

The only person to speak in favor of Dr. Beaver was Linda Kruszka. She identified herself as an “independent consultant investigator” for the medical examiner. She is an accountant in Marathon. She and Dr. Beaver are often seen in one another’s company outside of business hours.

Dr. Beaver had an answer for all the charges, sometimes multiple answers — although he often stumbled through his responses.

The Medical Examiners Commission seemed to support limiting access to the bereaved at the morgue.

arlins games, waterparks, beach days, field trips to local attractions … that’s what’s on the schedule for the summer program at Key West’s Boys and Girls Club. And, it’s mostly funded by one annual concert, the One Particular Harbour concert taking place on Sunday, May 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Margaritaville, 500 Duval St. “Over the past 14 years, the concert has raised $340,000 for the program,” said Dan Dombroski of the Boys and Girls Club. “It all started when Jimmy Buffett’s partner Kevin Boucher reached out to help us out and the restaurant donates the space and everything for three hours with no overhead.”

Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band has been playing the concert for the past 10 years. His grandchildren are a part of the Boys and Girls Club, and it’s something near and dear to his heart.

“He’s a real friend to our organization,” said Dombroski. “The community really rises up to help with these kind of things, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Livingston agrees. “I’ve seen it with our own grandkids,” he said.

“They are changing lives, not just watching them after school and

over the summer, they are making a major impact on our future generations.”

The Boys and Girls Club serves more than 200 children over the summer at the Key West and Big Pine Key location. In addition to the field trips, the club also teaches life skills, offers academic tutoring, and offers an affordable, safe place for children.

Tickets for One Particular Harbour concert are $50 and include a concert by Livingston and the band, a buffet, cocktails, and silent auction, with bigticket items like a paddleboard.

wenty-four local performers, two bands, six sets and a full evening concert took place this past Monday and Tuesday with the first local Songsmith Festival at The Ocean Key Resort Sunset Pier Zero Duval. This was a chance for local songwriters to gather, play together and highlight the amazing and dedicated musicians who live in the Keys. The Ocean Key resort paired up with radio personality and concert organizer Ben Solove.

“Musicians here are second to none,” said Solove. “I want to help put our music scene on the map.”

1. Newcomer to the Key West music scene is Marjory Lee with a tremendous voice and musical skill set. Coming from Nashville and also a BMI songwriter, Marjory Lee has chosen Key West to work on her music “because I really needed a change of pace.

Nashville is so big and I really like seeing the same smiling faces.”

Her songs are bluesy, soul filled originals delivered with a vibrating low voice that echoes with threads of country, folk and rock.

She can be seen about town at Sloppy Joe’s and the Green Room.

3. Songwriter Eric Paul Levy loves the classic rock, blues explosion on stage. Joining local favorite, Rachel Grace, they rocked the sunset pier bringing original vocals and songs alive.

2. With a youthful, clear voice, Adrienne Z delivers the finest in song poetry. A BMI songwriter, she has been writing and performing original music. It’s folk music that’s not afraid to get down and rock. A longtime local performer from Marathon to Key West, at places like Little Palm Island, Sunset Grille and Cheeca Lodge, she has recently finished her fourth solo album.

“It’s necessary to highlight local talent,” said Z, who had a great time on stage with Marjory Lee. “I am just smiling so much when I play here.”

uliana MacDowell lives half the year in Key West and the other in Loudoun County, Va. She is a singer songwriter and recording artist, getting ready to record her third album in Nashville. Her second album was just finished and recorded here in Key West, produced by Key West resident Ian Shaw, and will be released in the fall. She describes her music as “pop country with a little hint of blues and folk-rock, but they call it Americana.”

Juliana first came to Key West RVing down the coast with her husband. They arrived with a 36-foot RV and stayed at Jabour’s Trailer Court, parking as close as they could to the Schooner Wharf. She said, “Hearing Michael McCloud’s music and seeing bars everywhere, I fell in love with Key West instantly!”

That was 2001.

Juliana’s family influenced her musically as a child. Her grandfather put her up on his piano bench when she was 2 years old, and she enjoyed it. “I was singing since I was born. I sing all the time.” Based on her mom’s direction she took her voice to the church choir. “But nobody could hear me because I was so shy.” Growing up as a child on a farm alone, bonding with nature, she was singing by herself most of the time. “Nature is very musical,” she said. “For years, I sang softly due to a lack of confidence, but kept at it for the love of harmonizing with the other singers. And, it was church — they’d let anyone sing, so it was a pretty safe bet!” Then six years ago Joey Bauer

Since then, she has performed with, and can be seen regularly with, many local favorites: CW Colt, Matt Backer, Larry Baeder, Freebo. She is performing at the Key West Songwriters Festival with Matt Backer.

retchen spoke up at a staff meeting, and the next day the menu had a new item – Gretchen’s Grenade – added to it. “And, just like that, there’s a drink named after me,” she said.

Gretchen has been serving cocktails at Southernmost Beach Café for three years and has lived in Key West for the past 14. Her dad was in the Navy, so she traveled the world before settling in Key West.

Other than her grenade, she said the Bloody Marys are a popular choice in the morning and afternoon at the oceanfront bar. The Old Bay Bacon Bloody Mary is a big hit with guests. Made with Stoli vodka, and topped with crispy smoked bacon and bleu cheese stuffed olives, it’s not to be missed.

Followed up with her grenade, made with Stoli and fresh muddled lemon and sugar, it makes for a perfect day lounging on the southernmost beach.

“The view’s not too shabby,” she said, while suggesting the blackened catch BLT wrap to accompany the drinks.

When she isn’t working, she goes to school part time, working on a business management degree, and likes spending time at the pool.

My biggest inspiration at KWHS has been my TV Production teacher, Mr. Smith. He has been supporting me throughout my high school years and has led me in the right direction.

Definitely TV Production because it has helped me gain the knowledge I will use in my future profession.

What is your favorite social medium and why? Whom do you follow?

I use Instagram and follow contemporary architects, architectural magazines to keep up with current architectural news and news in general.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

The Keys face dangers of hurricanes every year, but many houses and buildings are unsafe and unprotected. We must meet these challenges by building houses with stable materials at a right elevation so that they will not be easily destroyed by a hurricane.

What are your plans after high school?

I plan to major in architecture and do projects throughout the world.

Do you think you will make the Keys your permanent home?

Why or why not?

It is least likely that the Keys will be my permanent home. I prefer living in big cities.

he Waterfront’s season is drawing to a close and they are going out with a bang with their latest production, “Forever Plaid.” It’s a joyous singing comedy packed with harmonious vocals and sly humor. Step back in time to 1964 and meet the “Plaids,” a quartet of rambunctious, overzealous singers, who miraculously have come back from the dead (tragic accident on the way to a show) to play the concert of their dreams. If a stage was their heaven, then they made it. For anyone who loves music from the ‘50s and ‘60s sung by fresh voices with eye-catching choreography, then don’t miss this absolutely charming evening at the Waterfront.

“Forever Plaid” is 90 non-stop minutes of toe-tapping, song-filled wonders complete with a disco ball and bubble machine. Written by Stuart Ross, the original production received accolades from The New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Director Cameron Murray rose to the challenge, and recreated the same whimsy and vigor in Key West.

“Good evening, we’re forever Plaid and we’re dead,” said Sparky, played by Marc Crow. The quartet also includes Matthew Kennedy (Jinx), J.B McLendon (Smudge) and Jeremy Zoma (Frankie). Each brings a

goofy personality and even goofier plaid outfit to life with incredible vocal ability. Whether singing together in perfect harmony or performing solos, these actors/ singers are clearly talented.

“We never sounded this good in life,” joked Jinx. Well, they do now, performing such classic hits as “Three Coins in the Fountain,” “Catch a Falling Star,” “Chain Gang,” “Cry,” “Heart and Soul,” “Rags to Riches,” “Love is a Many-Splendored Thing” and many more. The audience exuded sheer joy during the Plaids’ rendition of “Matilda,” which encouraged everyone to sing along.

The Plaids have more fun and more flair than Yale’s Whiffenpoofs with equal expertise. Supporting the singers onstage is Michael Fauss, musical director, playing on keyboards; and Gary Rivenson, on bass. Always on target is the set design by Michael Boyer, who easily transports the audience back to the time of Ed Sullivan type theaters.

ne of the things the Queen Mother is in charge of while wearing her crown is taking care of the things she loves in Key West. Although her reign is up when she passes the crown on May 15, Charlize Angel isn’t planning on discontinuing her involvement in the community.

“I’ve been so busy this past year,” she said. “Being Queen Mother really helped me get acquainted with this community. It’s been a humbling, eye opening experience to be a part of this.”

Angel, who is also known as Jim Harcup, works at Leather Masters during the day and at 801 bar three nights a week, having moved to Key West three years ago.

The Queen Mother Pageant will take place Monday, May 15 on the Duval Street block in front of La Te Da restaurant. Contestants compete in categories such as evening gown, talent and interview to decide who will be crowned Queen Mother 34.

The Key West tradition benefits Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Florida Keys and One Human Family. The pageant has raised more than $195,000 for local charities in the past 33 years.

The pageant started when Chris Bang, then owner of Pigeon House, wanted someone to represent the gay community at local charity events. The title also carries the responsibility of creating and producing at least three fundraisers for charities of their choice throughout their year.

Angel threw a benefit to help friend and fellow drag star Desiree with medical funds and a proper retirement send off, and helped co-sponsor the Holiday Hoo Ha on Appelrouth Lane after the Christmas bike parade, raising money for Wesley House. “I was most proud to be a part of the impromptu fundraiser for the Pulse Nightclub victims at Aqua,” she said.

“The Queen Mother Pageant promises not to disappoint,” said John “Ma” Evans, a former Queen Mother and owner of the pageant. “Dancing stilettos, fantastic wigs and fabulous dresses mean not a single guest will leave the event without a smile on their face.”

The contestants in the past have sung favorites like “Raining Men,” and classics from some of their favorites like Barbra Streisand and Gloria Estafan. There is also usually an assortment of comedy skits and high energy dance choreography.

Reigning Queen Mother Charlize Angel will crown the new queen at the event. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts promptly at 8 p.m.

Seating ranges from $200 to $500 per table. Tables seat eight and must be reserved early. Tables, individual seats and standing room tickets can be purchased by calling 305-296-974, or at the door.

The 2017 Queen Mother contestants will announce their candidacy on Sunday, May 14 at 4 p.m. at La Te Da’s weekly Tea Dance.

otherhood is a weird, weird task.

Moms spend their whole lives trying to fashion children who are better — nicer, wiser, smarter, more successful, and better at arts and crafts or weightlifting — than themselves. And yet the only tools they have to work with are the unsatisfactory set of skills they’ve spent a lifetime grappling with. It’s like trying to carve a marble masterpiece with a stupid hammer and a broken chisel. But they persevere because … well, they are mothers.

And so, one day a year, we celebrate mothers for their sacrifice, their sleeplessness, constant vigilance and absolute adoration for their children. We say with absolute humility and sheer awe for their strength and loyalty, “Thanks, Mom!”

y mom died in August of last year. I’ll be driving, or cooking, or talking to my children when I suddenly remember she’s gone. And an involuntary sigh, “Oh, mama,” will pop out of my mouth. There are reams to write about our relationship, my loss, etc., etc. Mostly, though, I want to write about her. So I will describe SARA one moment, one precious moment.

MATTHIS It was about 30 years ago on Green Turtle Cay on a vacation we took to the thinks community journalism Bahamas. I was about 20 years old and is important, but mom was about 50. We had rented two not serious; likes dinghies for the day to take 20 of us to weird and wona particular beach. We had to anchor on derful children the far side of the coral reef and swim (she has two).

I think the first wave terrified us, the second was a little less scary, and by the third we were eager ticket holders on this God-made roller coaster. After each wave, we came up laughing, giggling uncontrollably. With just a second or two between crests, there was only time to beg each other, “Stop laughing,” because any waterman will tell you it’s impossible to laugh and swim at the same time without drowning.

It only lasted a few minutes, but in this moment in time, my mother was like a little tanned water nymph, sleek, and vibrating with life. She did that funny thing then, where she raised her chin and chortled, sort of a ho-hoho, so weak with hilarity she couldn’t get out a proper laugh.

We were mermaids together, in a tiny bit of danger, but exhilarated by the wild ride.

I doubt she would have remembered this moment. She was so fun-loving that memories like this were commonplace. She was so courageous, she would not have remarked on the dangers of sharp coral. She was always young, even though on that day she was already a grandmother.

At this moment I want nothing more in the whole world than to sit down beside my mother and say, “Remember when?”

EVENTS BENEFIT HEALTHY START COALITION From live music to mermaids and more, the Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition has three fundraisers this weekend in Key West.

O

n Friday, May 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., the first fundraiser at Blue Room, 1128 Simonton St., will feature live music with Hey Monea. The band features brothers Dan and Nate Monea (and bassist Steven Fernandez while on tour). In 2012, they won Hard Rock’s worldwide battle of the bands, besting over 12,000 other bands from around the world, and were selected to open for Bruce Springsteen during Hard Rock Calling’s summer music festival in London’s Hyde Park.

In addition to the live music, the Friday event will feature portrait photography, a pop-up boutique, a silent auction, raffle, and celebrity bartenders.

On Saturday, May 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., country singer/songwriter Erica “Sunshine” Lee will perform at Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar in the Perry Hotel, 7001 Shrimp Road.

Lee has performed with David Allan Coe, Jack Ingram and ZZ Top’s

Billy Gibbons, among others and has earned a reputation as a hard-working musician. She was nominated in Australia 2015 for a 2015 People’s Choice award for best vocal and was Georgia Country’s female artist of the year in 2014. She has been touring since 2007. Her show on Saturday will be kid-friendly.

On Sunday, May 14, a picnic and pool party will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. poolside at the Perry Hotel.

Mermaids from the Southernmost Mermaid School will join the party from 1-3 p.m. to read mermaid stories, teach guests about mermaid language and folklore, and swim and play in the pool as entertainment for guests.

Gift baskets and other addons can be ordered along with tickets, to be delivered at the pool on Sunday.

The Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition is made up of private and public agencies, community-centered providers, local businesses and individuals in Monroe County, to implement Florida’s Healthy Start legislation. The legislation established a system that guarantees access to prenatal care and that all infants have access to services that promote normal growth and development.

Virginia Wark of Key West rides ‘Music to My Eyes,’ the winner of the Pedal Pusher award – including a trophy and $100 cash prize – for best overall Art Bike in the second annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture & Art Bike Parade on May 6. Hundreds packed the Tennessee Williams Theater in support of their friends and loved ones, with overflow seating extending into the lobby.
