2017 is expected to be an exciting and fun year for the film industry. Last year, the top four grossing movies at the box office were “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Finding Dory,” “Captain America: Civil War” and “The Secret Life of Pets.” This go-round, there’s even more hype. From remakes of classic movies like “Alien” and Stephen King’s “IT” to blockbuster sequels for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Transformers,” “Spiderman,” “Fast and the Furious,” “Star Wars” and “Planet of the Apes,” there is a lot to look forward to in the theater. So The Weekly asked…

What movie are you most excited for this year and why?

Aaron Rice said, “‘Alien Covenant.’ I really want to see the new CGI in this remake and see what they can do with an older film.”

“‘Captain Underpants.’ My plan is to go watch it after I eat some mushrooms – and I’m not talking the shiitake kind,” laughed Chris Rafart of Key Largo.

“‘Wonder Woman.’ I saw ‘Batman vs.

Superman’ and thought she was the best part of the movie. It didn’t make a lot of sense to me why they would be battling each other, but when Wonder Woman showed up, she got straight to kicking butt,” said Ray Thompson.

“‘Atomic Blonde.’ In the previews it looked really good and well-choreographed. She looks great and like a badass killer, and the ways she offs people were intricate and creative,” said William Whitaker of Key Largo.

n Saturday, May 13, the National Association of Letter Carriers will launch its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. The single-day drive is considered the nation’s largest. Last year, 80 million pounds of food was collected nationally. In the 25 years since it began, more than 1.5 billion pounds of food has been collected.

Stamp Out Hunger coordinates with three local food banks in the Upper Keys - St. Justin Martyr Church and Burton Memorial United Methodist Church in Key Largo, and First Baptist Church in Islamorada.

“In Key Largo alone, food collected averages between 11,000 to 15,000 pounds,” said Upper Keys food drive coordinator Cindy Smith.

“Altogether our community averages 30,000, but this year we’re looking to set the record.”

Smith has headed the Upper Keys efforts for eight years, and

hand-picks volunteers to collect food.

Letter carriers have the option of participating in the drive. And due to the enormity of the task, and the limited space in postal trucks, the volunteers provide much-needed support for the carriers.

“I really want to emphasize that people should not worry about their food being stolen. We have certified volunteers, identified by shirts and magnetic signs (on vehicles), picking up before and after the mail carriers,” said Smith.

Lending a hand in the effort is simple. Set out your non-perishable items before your letter carrier’s usual pick-up time. No items in glass containers. If your donated foods cannot fit in the mailbox, Smith advises to leave some sort of indicator that food drive items are next to the box.

The Upper Keys food drive helps to stock the food banks for the summer months, said Smith. In previous years, grocery bags were sent via mail, but this year, she said, there will be no bag.

OCEAN REEF FOUNDATION GIVES AWAY $1 MILLION Ocean Reef Community Foundation’s Community Grants Program marked the 10th anniversary of the All Charities Weekend by awarding more than $1 million for the first time to charities outside the gate – including a half-million in the Keys.

“Thanks to the generous people of Ocean Reef, our foundation’s community grants program has supported youth, education, health and family services and community with a variety of Upper Keys charities for almost 20 years,” said ORCF Grants Committee Chair Janie Sims. “This year we were able to award about half a million dollars to help great organizations in the Keys, a new record. We’re excited to see the charities put the funds to work for the community.”

The annual ORCF Community Grants program has an application deadline of October 1 for grants awarded the following spring. The program has awarded $1 million in Homestead, Florida City and the Upper Keys this year and more than $6.1 million since 2008. To learn more, visit the Community Grants page at www.orfound.org .

ON YOUR MARKS, GET SET, SWIM! On April 28-30, the girls of the Florida Keys Swimming Club joined about 400 swimmers from South Florida to participate in the Jon Olson Gold Medal Invitational. Fourteen teams competed over the fun-filled weekend. “It’s great for our kids to have a competition at our home pool. It makes all the difference for them and gives them the confidence they need,” said Coach Jon Olson. “Our girls are really tearing it up for one of the smaller teams in South Florida - they are competing with the best of them.” The long course swim meet is one of two meets this year, with the next on May 12-13. AUDRA HILL There is a fiery redhead in Key Largo whose business card should simply read “In Charge.” Audra Hill is many things to many different people – board member, aunt, CPA, organizer, daughter, philanthropist, rabble-rouser, treasurer, gadabout. But perhaps the most honest and widely known of all her titles is “friend.” Born in Miami, but raised on the docks of Key Largo Fisheries, Audra is the kind of person who not only makes everything more interesting, but also makes it just easier to get things done.

What makes living in the Keys so special?

I think that a certain caliber of people are drawn to the Keys, so that keeps it interesting. And the fact that you can be on the water at any given moment isn’t too shabby.

You are a founding partner of the Tolley/Hill accounting firm and responsible for keeping the IRS from snooping around your clients’ finances. What is the dumbest thing a client has ever tried to pull to avoid paying taxes?

Probably trying to move money to an offshore account and thinking the IRS doesn’t have access to banking records.

I’ve also had people try to ask if they can claim their dog as a dependent.

Every year the newest Leadership Monroe County class thinks they are the “best class.” However, it is widely known that your class, Class XVII, is the best. Why do you think that is?

We founded Florida Keys Days. By far the most successful class project there has been and ever will be.

Why should a young person get involved with the Mariners’ Young Philanthropists?

Our hospital serves as an integral part of the community. Our organization helps to fund major needs of the hospital that would otherwise not be funded without our philanthropy.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what five friends or family would you take with you?

My mom, my dad, my boyfriend Bobby Wallace, my dog Sailor, and Jason Koler.

Who would be eaten first?

Jason Koler.

If you could have cocktails with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be, where would you take them and what would you order?

My uncle Eddie who passed away, to the ocean to watch the sunset. I don’t think the drinks really matter at that point.

You wear nice shoes, drive an Audi and travel in private jets. What is your one low-class guilty pleasure?

Slinging fish on occasion at Key Largo Fisheries. It’s not low-class or guilty, though.

What’s the last book you read?

“Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand.

It’s about a man’s unwavering desire to make it through unimaginable circumstances.

If you hadn’t taken up accounting, what would be your preferred profession?

Interior design. I love putting textiles together. I just have an eye for what I know would look good.

Biggest fear or phobia?

I hate spiders with a passion. They creep me out completely.

If you could wake up tomorrow with any superpower what would it be?

Being able to fix “broken people.” My list of broken people is way too long to name anyone. *Cough Jason Cough* What is one thing about you that people wouldn’t normally know?

No job or task is beneath me. I grew up counting ballyhoo at Key Largo Fisheries, so I don’t mind getting my hands a little dirty.

Grouper season is back. What’s the plan?

I don’t get to fish as much as I’d like to.

But I’m sure my dad and I will get out to the reef sooner than later.

Gingers are misunderstood; what’s one of the struggles of being a redhead?

That everyone else wants to be you.

Haha! I hated having red hair as a kid, because it made me different, but I love being different now.

A

t the age of 8, John Baxter decided he wanted to play music. Why? To be closer to his grade school crush.

“She would leave early from class most days, and one day I asked her why,” said Baxter. “She told me she would leave to go practice in the band, so I joined the band and started off playing flute.”

From flute he moved on to saxophone, and luckily for Baxter, his first music teacher played in the famous Benny Goodman jazz and

swing band.

Baxter’s influences include Stan Getz and Stanley Turrentine, though he compares his sound more to Turrentine – soulful.

Though Baxter was symphony-trained, most of his music is improvised. He does, however, play in the Florida Keys Community Band. Baxter is a practice junkie, and credits his practice routine for the quality of his playing. When he gives lessons, he can tell right away who’s been practicing and who hasn’t.

“Sax is the loudest of the woodwind instruments, and to play in a rock band in the 1960s, you had to play sax or be a doubler – one who plays clarinet, flute, and sax,” he said.

Baxter’s repertoire includes pop tunes, which he makes jazzy.

“You play melodies people are familiar with, then you get jazzy with it, and then come back to the melody,” said Baxter.

Along with jazz, Baxter’s style encompasses many genres like calypso, reggae, country western, rock, soul and blues. He plays primarily in three groups – the Jazz Junction trio, Reel Ting with George Pollis, and at times he joins Moose and the Bullet Proof blues band.

“Music is a great escape. When your mind focuses on music, you’re not worried about the stressors of life, like pain and bills,” said Baxter.

here’s something spicy brewing at Sharkey’s Pub. It was only last week when a patron asked bartender Eian Carroll to make him something spicy.

So he thought for a moment, and then mixed an original creation he calls the Jalisco Mule, right there on the spot.

Carroll’s Jalisco Mule is made with muddled lime, jalapenoinfused tequila, and ginger beer, and if you’re not ready, will knock you off your rocker.

“I ended up selling eight that night,” said Carroll. “I would suggest pairing it with some Cajun mahi fingers.”

Originally from Jacksonville, Carroll has been bouncing in and out of the Keys for 23 years. A lover of motorcycles, fishing and the outdoors, he’s found a lot of peace in the Keys and decided to stay.

Before he was a bartender, Carroll worked as a welder for many years, doing both structural and artistic work. He worked for a sculptor at one point, and helped create the Savannah Riverwalk Memorial Globe which honors Georgians who took up arms and served in World War II. Now, Carroll spends his days off hanging with his dog and cat, Jax and Skoosh. Hardworking and creative, Carroll lives by the motto of “Strength.

hree guitarists. Three styles. Three days. Three locations.

The Florida Keys Guitar Festival will produce a “Guitar Summit,” bringing together David Feder, Mateo and Rolando Rojas the weekend of June 2-4, with performances in Tavernier, Marathon and Key West.

“Our theme this year – A Fusion of Master Guitarists – accurately describes what is in store for concert attendees,“ said Mateo, the founder of the Florida Keys Guitar Festival Summit series. “Like great individual vocalists who sing together for the first time to create new harmonies, our guitarists will reward the listeners with engaging new sounds from their established styles.”

Classical guitarist Mateo is a world-renowned composer and soloist who has performed with the Yehudi Menuhin Concerts and has been a Florida Artist-in-Residence. He is known for producing and performing in concerts throughout the Keys.

Rojas is a famed Latin guitarist who has played with musicians such as Gloria Estefan. Graduating from the Izidor Handler Conservatory of Music in Vina Del Mar, Chile, Rojas is a multifaceted instrumentalist who is well-versed in composing and performing different genres.

n the nearly 30 years that Snappers has existed it has become one of the favorite oceanfront eateries for locals. That doesn’t mean it sits still. Snappers is all about variety, and its multiple menus are often fine-tuned to reflect that.

“Twice a year about 20 percent of the main menu gets a makeover; it changes between our winter and summer options,” said COO Peter Althuis, who took over daily operations in 2015.

Outside, Snappers’ dockside Turtle Club menu is made up mostly of small bites, pub grub, sandwiches, and pizza.

With daily specials, unique options for its Sunday jazz brunch, special dishes for events, and a sushi truck from Thursday to Sunday that serves the outside tiki bar and Turtle club - there is something for everyone. For both Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day, the restaurant plans on having customized menus.

Some of the main menu’s most popular plates are fresh from local fisheries. The tuna nachos come marinated with sweet soy and orange chili, and are cleverly seated atop crispy wonton chips and wakame salad. The shrimp two ways has both grilled jumbo shrimp and creamy shrimp risotto drizzled with shellfish sauce. The applewood smoked baconwrapped scallops, with honey ginger teriyaki glaze, is a surefire way to start the meal.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center - Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager The Domestic Abuse Shelter (DAS), a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, has an opening for a full-time Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager. Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities. The Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills.
