“T

here is nowhere else we would rather be than here in Marathon,” said Jessica Schroeder, sitting on a porch swing with her husband Paul in their new home. Their adopted Florida Keys SPCA dog, Coconut, ran around wagging his tail in his new very large back yard. “Our first mortgage payment is almost due and we couldn’t be more excited.”

The two pointed out rental townhouses within eyesight. “The rent over there is $2,000 a month; we looked. We are paying that now, but we own it. It’s ours.”

The newlyweds are one of 23 families who have been chosen for the City of Marathon’s first-time homebuyer grant program, which gave them $10,000 toward their home. “It helped with closing costs, everything,” she said. “We wouldn’t have been able to buy this without it.”

Aviation six days a week, and parttime twice a week at Avis and Budget, renting cars. Paul has been with Lifetime Dock and Lumber for nine years. The Marathon City Council reinstated the home-buying program to help local families in the purchase of a home, or provide down payment funds to qualifying families whose primary income is earned in Marathon. The grant carries no interest, requires no monthly payments, and provides forgiveness at 30 years.

“After speaking with some of the families we assisted, this is one of the things I am most proud of,” said Marathon City Councilman Steve Cook.

Recently, the Marathon City Council set aside another $100,000 for 10 more first-time home buyers.

SEAN SAYER A man with many hats

As soon as Sean Sayer’s character, Stuart, falls through the door into the bathroom on Marathon Community Theatre’s stage in “Bathroom Humor,” the audience knows it’s going to be a funny play.

“Bathroom Humor” is his third show as an actor in Marathon. He was also in “Lone Star,” and “I Hate Hamlet,” with a 15-year break between “Hamlet” and “Bathroom Humor.”

“Stuart is an easy going guy who likes to party,” Sayer said. And party hard is what he does the whole play, while getting himself into some pretty precarious positions in the bathroom – think sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

The 1992 Marathon High School graduate spends his days as a wholesale seafood broker for Captain Tom’s Seafood, distributing fresh and frozen seafood products throughout the Keys. He spends his time at the theater and with his wife Allison and their two daughters, Sutton, 5, and Landry, 2.

Allison, who is no stranger to Marathon’s stage, said it best earlier this week: “He’s a show stealer, for sure.”

ow did you become involved with Marathon Community Theatre?

I took two theater classes in college where we built the set and worked backstage for the spring show. After moving back to Marathon, I was interested in seeing how I did on the stage, and MCT was perfect for that.

What was it like having Ms. Sayer (his mom) as your teacher at MHS? I only had her as a substitute once in 6th grade at Stanley Switlik. She started full-time after I moved on to middle school. I behaved, for sure.

In regard to your real job, what is the most sold fish in the Keys?

Mahi-mahi, by a wide margin over everything else.

Your character in “Bathroom Humor” is HILARIOUS. How did you prepare for the role?

I watched “Dazed and Confused” and Cheech and Chong’s “Up in Smoke” for inspiration.

Which TV or movie character is your alter ego?

Allison says Vince Vaughn’s character in “Old School.” He is a successful businessman with a family, who likes to hang out with his friends from college.

What would your superpower be?

Superman’s vision-based powers.

What is your nerdiest passion?

Reading the Wall Street Journal, delivered daily.

The boat is sinking; what do you grab?

I don’t go out too deep, so I would grab a life jacket. Stuart, my character in the play, would grab the cooler, for sure.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

Taking a cocktail to the nail salon and getting a pedicure while reading “GQ.” If you could change the world, what would you do?

Save the oceans from over-fishing and pollution.

Sean said he’s more cautious than his character: “If the boat was sinking, I would grab a life jacket. Stuart, my character in the play, would grab the cooler, for sure.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to?

Or lived?

I love New Orleans for the music, food and culture. I bought a house there in 2005.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I was in high school when “Silence of the Lambs” came out. I thought it might be cool to be an FBI agent.

Dream meal: you are sitting at a diner counter eating. Who walks in and sits next to you?

The first day I met Allison we ate breakfast at a diner. That worked out pretty well.

Finish these sentences: Allison describes me as … a hardworking, sensitive diva.

My autobiography would be titled…

“One Lucky Guy.” Marathon is …. home, and a great place to raise a family.

I live by the motto …. If it is to be, it’s up to me.

Tourney benefits Habitat for Humanity

T

he 11th annual Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament is just around the corner.

Next weekend anglers — professionals, “weekend warriors,” ladies and juniors — will compete for more than $10,000 in prizes.

It’s set for Saturday, May 13.

“Locals love this tournament because it’s a one-day tournament.

Not two days, not three days, not drawn out,” said Habitat’s Chris Todd Young.

It is the Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys’ biggest fundraiser of the year. Todd Young said she expects about 200 anglers by the call for lines in at 7:30 a.m.

The ladies category is new this year, though fantastic female anglers are not new to the tournament.

“Kathy Mathisen won the weekend warrior award last year with a 30-pounder,” Todd Young said. “She’s been fishing this tournament since its inception.

She was beside herself, ecstatic, to win.”

The fishing lasts until 3:30 p.m. and anglers congregate at Curly’s Dock to measure the catch. Weighin is 3:30 to 6 p.m. The awards party follows that evening at 7 p.m.

FKCC gets new board members Gov. Rick Scott recently appointed two new members to the District Board of Trustees of Florida Keys Community College.

• John Domenech, of Big Pine Key, is appointed for a term beginning April 3, 2017, and ending May 31, 2020.

• Sheldon Suga, of Duck Key, fills a vacant seat and John Domenech is appointed for a term beginning April 3, 2017, and ending May 31, 2017.

Both appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

A native of Key Sheldon Suga West, Domenech is a retired U.S. Army colonel and business executive. He recently retired from Leidos, an innovative technologies company, as a senior project manager.

Suga is the vice president and managing director at Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. He currently serves as the President of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) Monroe County Chapter.

Also on the seven-member board are Kevin Madok, Michael Puto, Stephanie Scuderi, Elena Spottswood, and Robert Stoky.

BRIEFLY Whoops, we missed a camp!

Overnight DolphinCamp at DRC DolphinCamp is a seven-day program that introduces students to the dolphins at Dolphin Research Center.

The course includes a unique blend of classroom discussions, observation time, and hands-on activities. Games and activities are also scheduled every evening at the dormitory. Class sizes average twelve to fourteen students.

For ages 10-12 and 13-14. Cost $1,600.

Mosquito Control receives Zika funding Florida Keys Mosquito Control District received additional funding from the Florida Department of Health to assist in Aedes aegypti control efforts. The Florida Department of Health will reimburse up to $145,724 for Aedes aegypti control measures through June of 2017. Reimbursable items are limited to operational costs and will include aerial liquid larvicide product, personnel costs, equipment purchases, and the purchase of traps used for surveillance. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are difficult and costly to control, can carry many diseases such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya. Remember to dump standing water.

Derby Dames support SPCA Key West Derby Dames’ next local roller derby bout is Saturday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Key West roller rink.

The bout will support the Florida Keys SPCA’s Marathon Campus. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5, children under 12 are free. Bring a chair.

COMMERCE CORNER DOLPHIN RESEARCH CENTER Dolphin Research Center is a nonprofit marine mammal education and research facility open daily to the public. In addition to the daily activities, DRC is committed to providing educational programs for schools, groups and individuals, and are a leader in marine mammal research worldwide. They are also the licensed manatee rescue team for the Florida Keys.

Jayne and Mandy Rodriguez founded the nonprofit Dolphin Research Center in 1984. However, this location has been the home to dolphins since the late 50s – including to dolphins that starred in the original “Flipper” series.

“Our goal is to teach as many people, and learn as much as possible, about the amazing animals that live here,” said CEO and President Rita Irwin. “We believe that you can connect with the dolphins and sea lions here and this life changing experience will inspire you to care more about them, their wild counterparts, and the ocean environment.”

When visiting DRC, the guest becomes part of the mission to teach, learn and care about marine mammals and the environment. As a nonprofit, they are funded by memberships and donations, as well as daily visits. With a membership, admission is free for the year. Bring the kids by this summer to see dolphins and sea lions and also to play in the sprayground.

DRC is committed to being a good community partner – donating thousands of dollars annually for admissions or programs for other nonprofit organization’s fundraising efforts. They also partner with Monroe County schools by offering free field trips, outreaches, Ocean Celebration Day and other events.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Politics puts Keys at risk It’s now apparent, unreservedly, that our southern environmentalecosystem region, which includes: the Gulf of Mexico and coasts, Atlantic seaboard, South Florida economic region and Everglades, and the U.S. Out Islands of the Florida Keys are under dire threat from one who should be protecting, not putting at greater risk, this vast system of world-dependent resources.

Recognizing his ignorance of the outside real world, compounded by the special interest desires of his administration which have a COMPLETE disregard for the environment, it now becomes the responsibility of those who agree, this should be our Concord Bridge!

“We are opening it up (to drilling),” said Trump, while signing an executive order. These reckless unthought-out actions, by someone who thinks oil comes out of the ground in cans, are so loud, I can’t hear a word his defenders and justifiers are saying. Today I opened the Miami Herald and read: “Trump targets marine sanctuaries in Florida and elsewhere for possible oil drilling.”

That the president would move to allow oil drilling closer to, if not within, Florida and Atlantic coast state waters is unnecessary and a slap in the face to even many who voted for him because they didn’t have a choice. What does he (you) not understand about both the negative environmental and economic risk for greater production of an already oversupply of this commodity? It was seven years ago this month - the Macondo Deepwater Horizon, negligently managed by BP, blew out of control and killed 11 people and destroyed elements of the Florida economy and four other states for years.

Florida’s economy is dying a death of these insidious thousand cuts!

Videos of cute babies have been replaced by 60-second cauliflower fried rice tutorials.

And since when did the world need or want to eat anything based on a unicorn? Unicorn cake, unicorn frosting, unicorn shakes – we all do know unicorns don’t exist, right? So gird (or curd) your loins …

COFFEE IN A CONE: Invented by a foreign barista named Dayne Levinrad, a cappuccino can be poured in a special chocolate coated cone that allows a 10-minute window to drink/eat your coffee. It’s an Instagram sensation, whoopee do.

SWEET POTATO TOAST: Doesn’t sound very creative but toasting up some sweet potato and slathering marmalade on it? Sure, why not?

CHECKING IN AT MTH MIDDLE KEYS AIRPORT SERVES GENERAL AVIATION

he Florida Keys Marathon International Airport earned its extra-long moniker last year, when the U.S. Customs facility was opened. It was a huge step in developing the airports profile in the eyes of visitors. Locals, whether or not they are pilots, know it well.

“This is a general aviation airport,” said Thomas “T.J.” Henderson, assistant director of Monroe County Airports.

For the lay public, the difference between a major hub versus a general aviation airport, well, it’s like the difference between a national department store chain and a resort boutique. Expect personalized service, familiar faces and attention to detail.

“Most locals are here at least once or twice a year — to see the vintage planes, or take a helicopter ride, or bring their kids for the EAA Young

Eagles Day.” The Marathon Airport is also an important part of the Keys infrastructure. It’s the home base for the aviation arms of both the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. It serves cargo operations like FedEx. It has a flight school. And, in the event of a hurricane (God forbid), it becomes an “air bridge.”

“We would use the airport to evacuate medical patients and receive emergency survival supplies,” Henderson said.

Henderson has been at the helm of the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport for about two and a half years. A native of Indianapolis, he received a bachelor’s degree from Auburn in aviation management, and an MBA from Pepperdine. Before coming to the Keys, he worked at the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. He became a pilot at the age of 21 and has an instrument rating. “I don’t fly much right now,” he said. “It’s an expensive hobby.”

Henderson is getting married in two months time to his fiancée, Sofia, in her homeland — Greece.

So how is MTH different?

What makes Marathon airport different from other general aviation airports? Well, we’re small in terms of area — we don’t have much room, about 197 acres. Also, we’re surrounded by residential neighborhoods and we’re very aware of that fact. Every decision we make takes that into account.

The customs wing of the Marathon airport is dedicated to the late Dick Ramsay, a pilot and former mayor of Marathon.

What projects are underway right now? We are planning two projects simultaneously right now.

One is the Master Plan update that will formulate how the airport will change and grow over the next 15 to 20 years.

The second is an Environmental Assessment that deals with moving the runway. Since the’80s, the FAA has said that the airport is out of compliance because the taxiway and runway are too close together. We are on notice from the Federal Aviation Association that this has to be fixed sooner rather than later. The runway will move 40 feet to the north and the project is estimated to cost about $15 million. We are still three years away from beginning construction and we will have workshops with the affected neighborhoods before then.

What are those hangars under construction at the east end of the airport? That is a public (county) project to replace 11 existing shade hangars. The new hangars (11) will be 45 by 45 feet.

This project will house three tenants — Marathon Flying Club and two private plane owners.

How are the hangars managed/ awarded at the Marathon airport?

Altogether we have 59 hangars. Of those, 15 are privately held and the rest are public, or owned by Monroe County. The private hangars have been built over many years.

Applicants applied and signed contracts agreeing to pay a certain dollar amount per square foot. The tenant constructs the hangar and the lease reverts to the county after a certain amount of years. At that point, the county can extend the lease, renegotiate the lease, or take over the hangar. Per square footage costs average 50 cents and hangar space ranges from 1,500 square feet to 12,000 square feet.

Right now, there’s more demand for hangar space than we can meet.

Are the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport or the Key West airports supported with tax dollars?

There is no county ad-valorem property tax. However, we do receive funding from other state and federal agencies for capital improvement projects.

Is the “back” fence, along Aviation Boulevard, going to move to accommodate the city’s plans for a new bike path? No. The vegetation that has been cleared is part of regular airport maintenance.

What are the biggest/smallest planes to land at MTH? The biggest was a C-130, those planes are used for military transport. The smallest was a paraglider — basically a man with a fan strapped to his back.

What’s an FBO? That means a Fixed Base Operator. At MTH we have two — the Marathon Jet Center that serves jets, and the Marathon General Aviation that serves planes with piston engines, or propellers.

Who uses the aiport? When is it busiest? Well, we have “hell week” just like the restaurants and hotels in the Keys — the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Spring break is also very busy for us. After Easter, the traffic begins to slow down. And many of our home-based planes belong to snowbirds, and leave for the summer months. Most of our clients are families, or groups that charter a plane for a destination vacation, some are corporate.

It’s beautiful up there, isn’t it? Flying out of the Marathon Airport is unparalleled in the United States. We’re surrounded by the most beautiful scenery.

I believe Ms. Thacker’s AP Language and Mr. Schubert’s AP Literature classes have most significantly prepared me for life after high school because not only have my essay skills improved, but also the way we’ve been taught to read and annotate a passage will help me down the road.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges?

My biggest challenge is not being thankful enough for where I live.

I occasionally take the gorgeous year-round weather along with the other amazing things down here for granted and forget that most people aren’t as fortunate as I am to live down here.

What are your plans after high school?

I will attend Andrew College in the fall on a soccer scholarship and study nursing.

Held last weekend, the event featured a 5K course with 22 obstacles, some of them very close to impossible. “The spiral, rotating monkey bars were hard,” said Liz Kuck of Keys Strength and Conditioning. “And the army crawl under barbed wire was about 80 yards long. Everyone was scratched up and bleeding,” said her husband and co-owner, Chris Kuck. Many of the local competitors are clients at Keys Strength and Conditioning.

Candidates need to be willing to work a varied schedule that could include nights, weekends, and rotating holidays to ensure coverage of the 24-hour emergency shelter facilities. Responsibilities include the day to day supervision and management of DAS residential facilities. The Domestic Violence Shelter Services Manager possesses at minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence, or high school/equivalency and four years providing direct services for survivors of domestic violence. Two years of successful supervisory experience in a domestic violence and/or sexual assault agency is required. The candidate will have knowledge of the root causes of violence against women and oppressed groups, proven experience training staff, and excellent organizational skills.
